Abstract

In this article, the authors find the evidence that media coverage consisting of 13 online newspapers enhanced the electoral results of right wing party in Spain (Vox) during general elections in November 2019. We consider the political parties and leaders mentions in these media during the electoral campaign from 1st to 10th November 2019, and only visibility or prominence dimension is necessary for the evidence.

7. Innovative Student Response System Methodologies for Civil Engineering Practical Lectures

Abstract

Performance of engineering degree students often becomes an important concern for lectures. Using classical teaching methodologies in practical lectures may be behind the problem. The present work develops a couple of innovative student-response-system based methodologies designed to be implemented during engineering practical lessons in higher education (BSc level). A pretest-posttest design is developed to assess the evolution of student's performance (third course in Civil Engineering degree at the University of Córdoba). In addition, a motivational questionnaire towards the use of the innovative methodologies has been filled by the students. The results of this pilot experience show an impact on performance by the rapid feedback linked to the in-class formative assessment, in which conceptual reminders at the beginning of the practical lessons boost the motivation, engagement, and enhancement. The motivational questionnaires depicted a favourable perception of the methodologies by the students, highlighting their recommendation to extend its application to other lecturers.

Abstract

The hydroxyl oxygen of the catalytic triad serine in the active center of serine hydrolase acetylcholinesterase (AChE) attacks organophosphorus compounds (OPs) at the phosphorus atom to displace the primary leaving group and to form a covalent bond. Inhibited AChE can be reactivated by cleavage of the Ser-phosphorus bond either spontaneously or through a reaction with nucleophilic agents, such as oximes. At the same time, the inhibited AChE adduct can lose part of the molecule by progressive dealkylation over time in a process called aging. Reactivation of the aged enzyme has not yet been demonstrated. Here, our goal was to study oxime reactivation and aging reactions of human AChE inhibited by mipafox or a sarin analog (Flu-MPs, fluorescent methylphosphonate). Progressive reactivation was observed after Flu-MPs inhibition using oxime 2-PAM. However, no reactivation was observed after mipafox inhibition with 2-PAM or the more potent oximes used. A peptide fingerprinted mass spectrometry (MS) method, which clearly distinguished the peptide with the active serine (active center peptide, ACP) of the human AChE adducted with OPs, was developed by MALDI-TOF and MALDI-TOF/TOF. The ACP was detected with a diethyl-phosphorylated adduct after paraoxon inhibition, and with an isopropylmethyl-phosphonylated and a methyl-phosphonylated adduct after Flu-MPs inhibition and subsequent aging. Nevertheless, nonaged nonreactivated complexes were seen after mipafox inhibition and incubation with oximes, where MS data showed an ACP with an NN diisopropyl phosphoryl adduct. The kinetic experiments showed no reactivation of activity. The computational molecular model analysis of the mipafox-inhibited hAChE plots of energy versus distance between the atoms separated by dealkylation showed a high energy demand, thus little aging probability. However, with Flu-MPs and DFP, where aging was observed in our MS data and in previously published crystal structures, the energy demand calculated in modeling was lower and, consequently, aging appeared as a more likely reaction. We document here direct evidence for a phosphorylated hAChE refractory to oxime reactivation, although we observed no aging.

Abstract

Collective stable chaos consists of the persistence of disordered patterns in dynamical spatiotemporal systems possessing a negative maximum Lyapunov exponent. We analyze the role of the topology of connectivity on the emergence and collapse of collective stable chaos in systems of coupled maps defined on a small-world networks. As local dynamics we employ a map that exhibits a period-three superstable orbit. The network is characterized by a rewiring probability $p$. We find that collective chaos is inhibited on some ranges of values of the probability $p$; instead, in these regions the system reaches a synchronized state equal to the period-three orbit of the local dynamics. Our results show that the presence of long-range interactions can induce the collapse of collective stable chaos in spatiotemporal systems., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The one-dimensional deterministic economic model recently studied by Gonzalez-Estevez et al. [Physica A 387, 4367 (2008)] is considered on a two-dimensional square lattice with periodic boundary conditions. In this model, the evolution of each agent is described by a map coupled with its nearest neighbors. The map has two factors: a linear term that accounts for the agent's own tendency to grow and an exponential term that saturates this growth through the control effect of the environment. The regions in the parameter space where the system displays Pareto and Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics are calculated for the cases of von Neumann and of Moore's neighborhoods. It is found that, even when the parameters in the system are kept fixed, a transition from Pareto to Boltzmann-Gibbs behavior can occur when the number of neighbors of each agent increases., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures. Abstract

In this work, an ensemble of economic interacting agents is considered. The agents are arranged in a linear array where only local couplings are allowed. The deterministic dynamics of each agent is given by a map. This map is expressed by two factors. The first one is a linear term that models the expansion of the agent's economy and that is controlled by the {\it growth capacity parameter}. The second one is an inhibition exponential term that is regulated by the {\it local environmental pressure}. Depending on the parameter setting, the system can display Pareto or Boltzmann-Gibbs behavior in the asymptotic dynamical regime. Abstract

A deterministic system of coupled maps is proposed as a model for economic activity among interacting agents. The values of the maps represent the wealth of the agents. The dynamics of the system is controlled by two parameters. One parameter expresses the growth capacity of the agents and the other describes the local environmental pressure. For some values of the parameters, the system exhibits nontrivial collective behavior, characterized by macroscopic periodic oscillations of the average wealth of the system, emerging out of local chaos. Abstract

Summary: Immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP) is an ultra‐rare disease that seldom occurs in the elderly. Few reports have studied the clinical course of iTTP in older patients. In this study, we have analysed the clinical characteristics at presentation and response to therapy in a series of 44 patients with iTTP ≥60 years at diagnosis from the Spanish TTP Registry and compared them with 209 patients with <60 years at diagnosis from the same Registry. Similar symptoms and laboratory results were described in both groups, except for a higher incidence of renal dysfunction among older patients (23% vs. 43.1%; p = 0.008). Front‐line treatment in patients ≥60 years was like that administered in younger patients. Also, no evidence of a difference in clinical response and overall survival was seen in both groups. Of note, 14 and 25 patients ≥60 years received treatment with caplacizumab and rituximab, respectively, showing a favourable safety and efficacy profile, like that observed in patients <60 years. 21. Rethinking ethnoarchaeology: following a long trail looking to improve hunter-fisher-gatherer social archaeology

Abstract

[EN] Our paper describes the demarche of our research trail in Ethnoarchaeology over 20 years through various research projects since 1986, when we begun carrying out research projects in Tierra del Fuego (TdF). Our objective was to test and develop the archaeological methodology to open up the possibility of approaching the social organization of prehistoric hunter-fisher-gatherer (HFG) societies. We follow chronologically and discuss the successive stages of our line of research and how one step led us to the next step, structuring a successive series of research projects. The bulky volume of bibliography produced including all the methodological details, empirical data, concrete results, etc… is cited at each step for readers who want to dig deeper into the details. There is also an open repository with all the documentation and information on the TdF projects. The conclusion of this long lasting ethnoarchaeological experimental trail was that it is indeed possible, through Archeology, to determine the existence and functioning of social organization in prehistoric HFG. Along these years following the same system of ethnoarchaeological contrasting, we analyzed the development of the coastal societies of the Northwest Coast of America with that ofTdF, considered examples of the opposite extremes of HFG social organization. We stated the preponderance of social norms that regulate reproduction and their direct relationship with the discrimination of women and the division of labor according to sex. We have proposed as an explanation for this divergent development the alternative options for the management of reproduction. To reinforce these conclusions, we replicate through the use of Agent Simulation the effect of specific social norms on the reproduction of.five groups of HFG. Las leishmaniasis pertenecen a un grupo de enfermedades parasitarias, causadas por diferentes especies de protozoos flagelados del género Leishmania, que son morfológicamente indistinguibles por observación directa (Cavalier-Smith, 1998; Alvar et al., 2004). El género Leishmania fue descripto simultáneamente por Charles Donovan y William Leishman a partir de biopsias viscerales y cutáneas en pacientes enfermos de la India, y en conmemoración se le otorga el nombre de Leishmania donovani al complejo de especies que conforman el género y Leishmaniosis Visceral (LV) o Kala-azar (del sánscrito: Kala “negra, impura” y azar “fiebre”) a la enfermedad. Abstract

"Durante la última década, los materiales compuestos de nueva generación han ganado una mayor importancia como materiales de diseño en muchos sectores industriales, principalmente debido a su bajo peso y excelente desempeño estructural. Entre ellos destacan la impresión 3D por su facilidad de diseño y bajo coste y los materiales compuestos debido al bajo peso manteniendo una buena rigidez y resistencia estructural. Es por eso que son ampliamente utilizados tanto en la industria aeroespacial como en la automotriz. La necesidad de una caracterización electromagnética (EM) adecuada de estos materiales se puede demostrar en un par de ejemplos. En comparación con las superficies metálicas clásicas utilizadas en los aviones, los compuestos de fibra de carbono presentan un blindaje menos efectivo, por lo que estudiar esta característica es fundamental para preservar el buen funcionamiento de los dispositivos ubicados dentro de esas plataformas. Aparte de eso, las características EM de los materiales impresos en 3D difieren con respecto a las materias primas iniciales, como resultado del cambio de fase de estado líquido a sólido cuando se imprimen y, la densidad de relleno en las muestras finales, podría modificar propiedades como su permitividad o la tangente de pérdida. Además de esta proliferación en el uso de materiales avanzados, los componentes electrónicos utilizados en las plataformas aeroespaciales han aumentado en número y en importancia, volviéndose imprescindibles incluso para el uso seguro de la aeronave. Esto hace que la caracterización electromagnética de estos materiales sea indispensable. El INTA, en el marco del proyecto eSAFE (PID2019-106120RB-C32), financiado por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN), trabaja en la caracterización electromagnética de materiales. En concreto, el Laboratorio de Electromagnetismo Computacional y Aplicado (CAEM-Lab) del INTA cuenta con diferentes sistemas de medida para caracterización electromagnética, adaptados cada uno de ellos a las necesidades de cada material, frecuencia y aplicación. Teniendo en cuenta todo lo anterior, el objetivo de esta comunicación es la descripción de algunos de los métodos de medida desarrollados y disponibles en el CAEM-Lab para la caracterización de materiales y estructuras aeroespaciales. 28. Caracterización electromagnética de redes miméticas multiespectrales a 94 GHz

Abstract

En el entorno militar existe la necesidad de reducir al máximo la visibilidad de diferentes sistemas y equipamientos. El requisito más antiguo referente a esta necesidad es que el objeto se confunda con el entorno en el que se encuentra. Esta reducción de la visibilidad se puede conseguir mediante distintas técnicas que dificulten la detección (reducción de emisiones infrarrojas, atenuación del ruido o reducción de firma radar, por ejemplo). Para ello es necesario el tratamiento de forma o de acabado superficial sobre el material, o una combinación de ambos (pinturas, revestimientos, paneles, mantas o redes). En estos elementos nombrados, la atenuación de potencia, junto con la reflexión de la señal incidente, son los factores que dan lugar a un comportamiento en servicio adecuado. Elementos como las redes miméticas multiespectrales (camouflage nettings) son capaces de reducir la visibilidad de los elementos que resguardan en los rangos ultravioleta (UV), visible (VIS), infrarrojo (IR) y radar. Estas suelen estar fabricadas a partir de fibras conductoras (metálicas o no metálicas) con una distribución uniforme y una tela base, ya que el tejido de camuflaje debe ser flexible para poder cubrir un objeto, con o sin un marco de apoyo. Además, debe ser lo suficientemente ligera para que pueda ser manejada fácilmente por una o varias personas y colocado en el lugar deseado. En este contexto, el presente trabajo se centra en la caracterización electromagnética de redes miméticas para protección de sistemas y equipos militares a distintas frecuencias (desde 2,6 GHz hasta 110 GHz) y la descripción de los sistemas de medida disponibles en el Laboratorio de Electromagnetismo Computacional y Aplicado del INTA.El equipo de Sistemas SAR espaciales y calibración de INTA es responsable del centro de Calibración y Validación de PAZ y del aseguramiento las prestaciones de los productos durante toda la vida útil de la misión. Para ello, se lleva a cabo un programa de monitorización de prestaciones continuo sobre los datos adquiridos y campañas de calibración específicas periódicamente. Estas actividades de monitorización y calibración se realizan sobre elementos de referencia cuya localización precisa y respuesta a la señal RADAR es conocida y exacta. Generalmente, los elementos de calibración más utilizados son reflectores de esquina, generalmente triedros metálicos, cuya sección transversal RADAR (RCS) se puede caracterizar estimando la energía interceptada por el área de sus caras. Por ser elementos pasivos no introducen retardos electrónicos, lo que les hace ideales para la calibración geométrica. La exactitud de la calibración radiométrica estará acotada por la estabilidad del instrumento, pero también por la exactitud en la determinación de la RCS de referencia de los elementos de calibración. Las fuentes de error que más afectan a esta determinación son los defectos de fabricación respecto a planitud, ortogonalidad o dimensionamiento y las condiciones ambientales de la medida, como pueden ser interferencias con el entorno o la climatología local, que se tratan de minimizar buscando ubicaciones de despliegue homogéneas y libres de elementos interferentes. El método más fiable para para minimizar los errores introducidos en el proceso de fabricación consiste en la medida en cámara de la RCS de cada uno de estos reflectores, pero este proceso puede resultar costoso y, especialmente con reflectores de gran tamaño, sujeto a la disponibilidad de instalaciones altamente especializadas. En este artículo se muestran las actividades realizadas junto con el Laboratorio de Electromagnetismo Computacional y Aplicado del INTA para la definición de un proceso de caracterización de los 40 reflectores del campo de calibración INTA de PAZ basado en su medida dimensional, la generación de un modelo 3-D de los mismos y la simulación de su RCS a partir de ellos. Abstract

Obtaining electromagnetic (EM) characterization of 3D printed, composite materials or a combination of them is essential to ensure safety and EM compatibility. Free space methods are widely used for this purpose, despite their inherent practical difficulties. This article describes the development of a series of algorithms for the extraction of the permittivity and permeability of dielectric materials from free space measurements between 6 and 13 GHz. The extracted properties are obtained from the transmission and reflection coefficients using the Time- Domain Gating from a vector spectrum analyzer (VNA). Preprint

Abstract

Nowadays, there exists a tendency for replacing typical metallic materials in the aerial platforms for nonmetallic ones. However, this arises many questions, for example, how they react against Electromagnetic Enviromental Effects (E3), where we can count lightning effects among many others. Due to this, the aim of this work is to characterize different type of joints commonly used in the aerospace industry for Carbon Fiber Composite (CFC) fuselages. This analysis is crucial in order to figure out possible electrical discontinuities that could affect to the electromagnetic behaviour of an aircraft. Having that in mind, a flexible measurement setup based on a microstrip line is proposed, where different CFC test samples are evaluated. Abstract

Even though the colonization of the Moon is still a long term objective for mankind, there already exist studies analysing the different usages lunar dust (regolith) might have. Following this idea, several simulants of the real regolith have been developed in order to understand its behaviour and be able to work with it in a more efficient way. This paper intends to contribute to those efforts, investigating the electromagnetic properties of EAC-1A and JSC-2A, which had never been measured before. This document presents the results obtained in terms of complex permittivity, complex permeability and tangent loss of the aforementioned regolith simulants at ambient temperature from 400 MHz to 20 GHz. Furthermore, a comparison among both simulants, previously measured ones and real samples is held. The measurements were carried out by means of two different non-resonant techniques, the Open-Ended Coaxial Probe (OECP) and the Transmission Line Method, using DAK and EpsiMu kits respectively. Abstract

CAR-T cell therapy represents a therapeutic revolution in the prognosis and treatment of patients with certain types of hematological cancer. However, they also pose new challenges in the healthcare, regulatory and financial fields. The aim of the RET-A project was to undertake a strategic reflection on the management of CAR-T therapies within the Spanish National Health System, to agree on recommendations that will help to better deal with the new context introduced by these cell therapies in the present and in the future. This think tank involved 40 key agents and opinion leaders. The experts identified three great challenges for implementing advanced therapies in Spain: therapeutic individualisation, with a multidisciplinary approach; acceleration of access times, by minimizing bureaucracy; and increase in the number of centers qualified to manage the CAR-T therapies in the NHS. The experts agreed on the ideal criteria for designating those qualified centers. They also agreed on a comprehensive CAR-T care pathway with the timings and roles which would ideally be involved in each part of the process.

Abstract

The unprecedented availability of optical satellite data in cloud-based computing platforms, such as Google Earth Engine (GEE), opens new possibilities to develop crop trait retrieval models from the local to the planetary scale. Hybrid retrieval models are of interest to run in these platforms as they combine the advantages of physically-based radiative transfer models (RTM) with the flexibility of machine learning regression algorithms. Previous research with GEE primarily relied on processing bottom-of-atmosphere (BOA) reflectance data, which requires atmospheric correction. In the present study, we implemented hybrid models directly into GEE for processing Sentinel-2 (S2) Level-1C (L1C) top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance data into crop traits. To achieve this, a training dataset was generated using the leaf-canopy RTM PROSAIL in combination with the atmospheric model 6SV. Gaussian process regression (GPR) retrieval models were then established for eight essential crop traits namely leaf chlorophyll content, leaf water content, leaf dry matter content, fractional vegetation cover, leaf area index (LAI), and upscaled leaf variables (i.e., canopy chlorophyll content, canopy water content and canopy dry matter content). An important pre-requisite for implementation into GEE is that the models are sufficiently light in order to facilitate efficient and fast processing. Successful reduction of the training dataset by 78% was achieved using the active learning technique Euclidean distance-based diversity (EBD). With the EBD-GPR models, highly accurate validation results of LAI and upscaled leaf variables were obtained against in situ field data from the validation study site Munich-North-Isar (MNI), with normalized root mean square errors (NRMSE) from 6% to 13%.
