Project-based and student-driven learning continues to be at the forefront of school reform efforts. Technology is a significant bridge and tool used to empower and leverage student projects. Geospatial technologies continue to be underutilized in the middle grades. There are many cutting-edge, free geospatial tools available through the ESRI School Bundle. This article is aimed at bridging the gap in the practitioner literature about how free geospatial technologies can be used in the project-based, science classroom. Numerous example products and recommendations are made to encourage teachers to consider these technologies. Geographic information systems (GIS) are ubiquitous building blocks of geosurveillance environments embedded in everyday social practices. This article builds on the literature on geomedia, the criticisms of GIS, and communicative spaces, to delve into the realm of GIS software and spatial analytics. The data corpus consists of ArcGIS and ESRI blogs on the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) site, which defines itself as the global market leader in GIS software, location intelligence, and mapping. This project assesses the impact of their discursive representations of the future and the societal implications of these views through an iterative process of computational and critical interpretive analyses—extending from LDA topic modelling to critical discourse analysis—to unveil the ideological underpinnings of a corporate-prescribed understanding of (GIS) future. The analysis reveals that representations of the future in the main blogs of the geospatial industry are deeply embedded in ideological principles that emphasise perceived indispensability and technosolutionism as the inherent belief that complex social, political, and economic issues can be solved primarily or exclusively through technological means. The article identifies the rhetorical and structural operations in a discourse that ultimately kidnaps any alternative futures. The geospatial industry’s representations of the future serve as ideological tools that shape perceptions about societal development and democratic conditions. The critical engagement with these representations contributes to understanding the role of GIS technology in the shaping of fair futures built on democratic public spheres in the digital age.

ABSTRACT Currently, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data have not shown strong concordance with Escherichia coli susceptibility profiles to the commonly used β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor (BL/BLI) combinations: ampicillin-sulbactam (SAM), amoxicillin-clavulanate (AMC), and piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP). Progressive resistance to these BL/BLIs in the absence of cephalosporin resistance, also known as extended-spectrum resistance to BL/BLI (ESRI), has been suggested to primarily result from increased copy numbers of bla TEM variants, which is not routinely assessed in WGS data. We sought to determine whether addition of gene amplification could improve genotype-phenotype associations through WGS analysis of 147 E. coli bacteremia isolates with increasing categories of BL/BLI non-susceptibility ranging from ampicillin (AMP) susceptibility to being fully resistant to all three BL/BLIs. Consistent with a key role of bla TEM in ESRI, 112/134 strains (84%) with at least ampicillin non-susceptibility encoded bla TEM. Evidence of bla TEM amplification (i.e., bla TEM gene copy number estimates > 2×) was present in 40/112 (36%) strains. There were positive correlations between bla TEM copy numbers with minimum inhibitory concentrations of AMC and TZP (P < 0.05) but not for SAM (P = 0.09). The diversity of β-lactam resistance mechanisms, including non-ceftriaxone hydrolyzing bla CTX-M variants, bla OXA-1, and ampC and bla TEM strong promoter mutations, was greater in AMC- and TZP-non-susceptible strains but rarely observed within SAM- and AMP-non-susceptible isolates. Our study indicates that comprehensive analysis of WGS data, including β-lactamase-encoding gene amplification, can help categorize E. coli with AMC or TZP non-susceptibility but that discerning the transition from SAM susceptibility to SAM non-susceptibility using genetic data requires further refinement. IMPORTANCE The increased feasibility of whole-genome sequencing has generated significant interest in using such molecular diagnostic approaches to characterize difficult-to-treat, antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) infections. Nevertheless, there are current limitations in the accurate prediction of AMR phenotypes based on existing AMR gene database approaches, which primarily correlate a phenotype with the presence/absence of a single AMR gene. Our study utilized a large cohort of cephalosporin-susceptible Escherichia coli bacteremia samples to determine how increasing the dosage of narrow-spectrum β-lactamase-encoding genes in conjunction with other diverse β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor (BL/BLI) genetic determinants contributes to progressively more severe BL/BLI phenotypes. We were able to characterize the complexity of the genetic mechanisms underlying progressive BL/BLI resistance including the critical role of β-lactamase encoding gene amplification. For the diverse array of AMR phenotypes with complex mechanisms involving multiple genomic factors, our study provides an example of how composite risk scores may improve understanding of AMR genotype/phenotype correlations.

The breeding biology and ecology of the Little Tinamou (Ciypturellis soui) is poorly known due to its secretive habits and cryptic coloration. We used radio telemetry and temperature data-loggers to monitor radio-tagged tinamous and nests in the subtropical wet forest life zone in a protected rural site near Cali, Colombia, between February 2013 and March 2015. Population density was higher on a transect in continuous primary forest than in 3 transects in secondgrowth forest fragments. Peak breeding occurred during the main rainy season of September-December. Simultaneous female and male home range overlap during incubation indicates behavioral monogamy in 4 radio-tagged pairs. The absence of female home range overlap with that of an incubating male suggests an instance of polvgynandry. Male home range size was greatest prior to breeding (3.76 [+ or -] 2.31 ha, minimum convex polygon) and decreased in size during the egg and chick stages. Parental care was provided only by males, which displayed moderately high nest attendance during incubation (77.5% [+ or -] 4.5% on nest per 24 h period) and while foraging with chicks after hatching. Females vocalized more frequently and with different vocalizations than males. Females were larger than males in body mass (by 8.8%), body length (by 9.5%), tarsus (by 9.4%), and wing (by 9.4%). Our sexual dimorphism findings are consistent with female defense of territory. Adults were diet generalists. 72% [+ or -] 29%. of the fecal samples examined contained material of 9 plant species and 9% [+ or -] 13% of the fecal samples contained pieces of 4 orders of arthropods. La ausencia de traslapc del area dc ambito domestico dc la hembra con el macho que se encontraba incubando sugiere un caso poliginandria. El area de ambito domestico de los machos rue mas grandc previo a la anidacion (3.76 [+ or -] 2.31 ha, poligono minimo convexo) y disminuyo su lumano durante las etapas de hucvos y polluclos. El cuidado parental lue realizado solamente por machos, que mostraron una atencion del nido moderadamente alta durante la incubacion (77.5 [+ or -] 4.5% sobrc nido por un periodo de 24 h) y mientras forrajca con los polluclos despues de la eclosion. Las hembras vocali/aron mas frecucntcmente y con diferentcs cantos que los machos. Las hembras presentaron mayor masa corporal (8.8%), longitud corporal (9.5%), tarso (9.4%) y ala (9.4%) que los machos. Los resultados dc dimorfismo sexual son consistentes con defensa de territorio. Historically, dense vegetation cover near buildings has caused power disruptions during weather phenomena. These types of severe storms impact the coast of Florida each year. However, challenges exist for obtaining both power outage data and calculating the impact of tree cover. NASA's Nighttime Lights, Black Marble, VNP46 product is utilized to analyze the natural and built environments. One aspect of the built environment that can be mapped with the Black Marble data is the megawatts of electricity used by the electrical power grid based on the magnitude of emitted nighttime light energy. This paper discusses using Black Marble data and other landscape variables within a probabilistic model to examine spatial patterns and map electricity outages with Bayesian networks. The research results indicate a high probability of a significant power outage when dense vegetation is present, but nuances in our naura and built environments like electric substations and land cover type alter the chance of reducing energy emissions. Land use change is an important issue for urban and regional planners and policy makers, but it is also very useful in conservation planning, food security, and hydrological modeling. Data, information and analysis tools become obstacles in detecting changes in land use. With increasing access to data and current technology, it is hoped that land use observations can be carried out in a simple way but have more accurate results. This study aimed to analyze land cover changes in Padang City 2018-2022, using Landsat Imagery and Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis. Firstly, observations on ESRI Land Cover which displays a global map of land use or land cover (LULC) derived from ESA Sentinel-2 Imagery at a resolution of 10 m. The results showed that the area of forest cover has decreased and the built-up area has increased in the 2017-2018 and 2021-2022. Secondly, using the EO Browser, namely Sentinel-2, that was done in one to search for and compare images using high resolution at these sources, there were 19 land cover changes, such as increasing residential land use, while forest land allotment decreased.
