Among sleep-disordered breathing disorders, obstructive sleep apnea is the most represented one, but central sleep apnea, isolated or in the context of a periodic breathing/Cheyne–Stokes respiration, is frequently reported in these patients. Altered baroreflex responses have been reported in the acute phases of a cerebral event.Methods: We conducted, in a group of patients with ischemic stroke (n=60), a prospective 3-month follow-up physiological study to describe the breathing pattern during sleep and baroreflex sensitivity in the acute phase and in the recovery phase.Results: In the acute phase, within 10 days from the onset of symptoms, 22.4% of patients had a normal breathing pattern, 40.3% had an obstructive pattern, 16.4% had a central pattern, and 29.9% showed a mixed pattern. Smaller variations in the Apnea–Hypopnea Index were found in normal breathing and obstructive groups (ΔAHI 2.1± 4.1 and − 2.8± 11.6, respectively) in comparison with central and mixed patterns (ΔAHI − 6.9± 15.1 and − 12.5± 13.1, respectively; ANOVA p=0.01). The obstructive pattern became the most frequent pattern, in 38.3% of patients at baseline and 61.7% of patients at follow-up. Modification of baroreflex sensitivity over time was influenced by the site of the lesion and by the sleep disorder pattern in the acute phase (MANOVA p=0.005).Conclusion: We suggest that a down-regulation of autonomic activity, possibly related to reduced vagal modulation, may help the recovery after stroke, or a transitory disconnection from the cortical node that participates in the regulation of sympathetic outflow.Keywords: sleep-disordered breathing, baroreflex, chemoreflex, brain lesion

Abstract

Measurements of the size of dust continuum emission are an important tool for constraining the spatial extent of star formation and hence the build-up of stellar mass. Compact dust emission has generally been observed at Cosmic Noon (z~2-3). However, at earlier epochs, toward the end of the Reionization (z~4-6), only the sizes of a handful of IR-bright galaxies have been measured. In this work, we derive the dust emission sizes of main-sequence galaxies at z~5 from the ALPINE survey. We measure the dust effective radius r_e,FIR in the uv-plane in Band 7 of ALMA for seven ALPINE galaxies with resolved emission and we compare it with rest-frame UV and [CII]158$\mu$m measurements. We study the r_e,FIR-L_IR scaling relation by considering our dust size measurements and all the data in literature at z~4-6. Finally, we compare our size measurements with predictions from simulations. The dust emission in the selected ALPINE galaxies is rather extended (r_e,FIR~1.5-3 kpc), similar to [CII]158 um but a factor of ~2 larger than the rest-frame UV emission. Putting together all the measurements at z~5, spanning 2 decades in luminosity from L_IR ~ 10^11 L_sun to L_IR ~ 10^13 L_sun, the data highlight a steeply increasing trend of the r_e,FIR-L_IR relation at L_IR< 10^12 L_sun, followed by a downturn and a decreasing trend at brighter luminosities. Finally, simulations that extend up to the stellar masses of the ALPINE galaxies considered in the present work predict a sub-set of galaxies (~25% at 10^10 M_sun < M_star < 10^11 M_sun) with sizes as large as those measured., Comment: 8 pages, Accepted by A&A

Abstract

We present a new prediction of the luminosity functions of the [CII] line at 158 $\mu$m, of the CO lines from J=0 to J=24, and of the molecular gas mass density up to z=10, using the Spectro-Photometric Realisations of Infrared-selected Targets at all-z (SPRITZ) simulation (Bisigello et al. 2021). We update the state-of-the-art phenomenological simulation SPRITZ to include both the CO ($J\leq24$) and [CII] line luminosities. This has been performed using different empirical and theoretical relations to convert the total infrared luminosity (or star formation rate) to [CII] or CO luminosity. The resulting line luminosity functions have been compared for validation with a large set of observations available in the literature. We then used the derived CO and [CII] line luminosities to estimate the molecular gas mass density and compare it with available observations. The CO and [CII] luminosity functions presented here are well in agreement with all the available observations. In particular, the best results for [CII] are obtained deriving the [CII] luminosity directly from the star formation rate, but considering a dependence of this relation on the gas metallicity. For all the CO luminosity functions, the estimates favoured by the data are derived considering different relations, depending on the ionisation mechanism dominating each galaxy, i.e. star formation or active galactic nuclei, and, moreover, deriving the $J\geq4$ CO lines directly from the [CII] luminosity. However, further data are necessary to fully discriminate between models. Finally, the best agreement with observations of the molecular gas mass density are derived by converting the [CII] luminosity to H2 mass, using a [CII]-to-H2 conversion ~130 $\rm M_{\odot}/{\rm L}_{\odot}$. Abstract

OBJECTIVES: To determine the impact of insecticide-treated curtains (ITC) on all-cause child mortality (6-59 months) over a period of six years. To determine whether initial reductions in child mortality following the implementation of ITC are sustained over the longer term or whether "delayed" mortality occurs. METHODS: A rural population of ca 100 000 living in an area with high, seasonal Plasmodium falciparum transmission was studied in Burkina Faso. Annual censuses were conducted from 1993 to 2000 to measure child mortality. ITC to cover doors, windows, and eaves were provided to half the population in 1994 with the remainder receiving ITC in 1996. Curtains were re-treated or, if necessary, replaced annually. FINDINGS: Over six years of implementation of ITC, no evidence of the shift in child mortality from younger to older children was observed. Estimates of the reduction in child mortality associated with ITC ranged from 19% to 24%. CONCLUSIONS: In our population there was no evidence to suggest that initial reduction in child mortality associated with the introduction of insecticide-treated materials was subsequently compromised by a shift in child mortality to older-aged children. Estimates of the impact of ITC on child mortality in this population range from 19% to 24%.

Abstract

DREAMS (Dust Characterisation, Risk Assessment, and Environment Analyser on the Martian Surface) is a payload accommodated on the Schiaparelli Entry and Descent Module (EDM) of ExoMars 2016, the ESA and Roscosmos mission to Mars (Esposito (2015), Bettanini et al. (2014)). It is a meteorological station with the additional capability to perform measure- ments of the atmospheric electric fields close to the surface of Mars. The instrument package will make the first measurements of electric fields on Mars, providing data that will be of value in planning the second ExoMars mission in 2020, as well as possible future human missions to the red planet. Abstract

The radiative cooling of shocked gas with primordial chemical composition is an important process relevant to the formation of the first stars and structures, as well as taking place also in high velocity cloud collisions and supernovae explosions. Among the different processes that need to be considered, the formation kinetics and cooling of molecular hydrogen are of prime interest, since they provide the only way to lower the gas temperature to values well below $\sim$10$^4$~K. In previous works, the internal energy level structure of H$_2$ and its cation has been treated in the approximation of rovibrational ground state at low densities, or trying to describe the dynamics using some arbitrary $v>0$ H$_2$ level that is considered representative of the excited vibrational manifold. In this study, we compute the vibrationally resolved kinetics for the time-dependent chemical and thermal evolution of the post-shock gas in a medium of primordial composition. The calculated non-equilibrium distributions are used to evaluate effects on the cooling function of the gas and on the cooling time. We formulate the Josephson effect in a field theoretic language which affords a straightforward generalization to the non-abelian case. Our formalism interprets Josephson tunneling as the excitation of pseudo-Goldstone bosons. We demonstrate the formalism through the consideration of a single junction separating two regions with a purely non-abelian order parameter and a sandwich of three regions where the central region is in a distinct phase. Abstract

We search for superspace Chern-Simons-like higher-derivative terms in the low energy effective actions of supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. Superspace Chern-Simons-like terms are those gauge-invariant terms which cannot be written solely in terms of field strength superfields and covariant derivatives, but in which a gauge potential superfield appears explicitly. We find one class of such four-derivative terms with N=2 supersymmetry which, though locally on the Coulomb branch can be written solely in terms of field strengths, globally cannot be. These terms are classified by certain Dolbeault cohomology classes on the moduli space. Abstract

We show how to systematically construct higher-derivative terms in effective actions in harmonic superspace despite the infinite redundancy in their description due to the infinite number of auxiliary fields. Making an assumption about the absence of certain superspace Chern-Simons-like terms involving vector multiplets, we write all 3- and 4-derivative terms on Higgs, Coulomb, and mixed branches. Among these terms are several with only holomorphic dependence on fields, and at least one satisfies a non-renormalization theorem. These holomorphic terms include a novel 3-derivative term on mixed branches given as an integral over 3/4 of superspace. As an illustration of our method, we search for Wess-Zumino terms in the low energy effective action of N=2 supersymmetric QCD. We show that such terms occur only on mixed branches. We also present an argument showing that the combination of space-time locality with supersymmetry implies locality in the anticommuting superspace coordinates of for unconstrained superfields., Comment: 30 pages. Abstract

A finite spin system invariant under a symmetry group G is a very illustrative example of the finite group action on a set of mappings f:X->Y. In the case of spin systems X is a set of spin carriers and Y contains 2s+1 z-components -s<=m<=s for a given spin number s. Orbits and stabilizers are used as additional indices of the symmetry adapted basis. Their mathematical nature does not lead to smaller eigenproblems, but they label states in a systematic way. Some combinatorial and group-theoretical structures, like double cosets and transitive representations, appear in a natural way. In such a system one can construct general formulas for vectors of symmetry adapted basis and matrix elements of operators commuting with the action of $G$ in the space of states. Considerations presented in this paper should be followed by detailed discussion of different symmetry groups (e.g. cyclic of dihedral ones) and optimal implementation of algorithms. Abstract

The scalar invariant, I, constructed from the "square" of the first covariant derivative of the curvature tensor is used to probe the local geometry of static spacetimes which are also Einstein spaces. We obtain an explicit form of this invariant, exploiting the local warp-product structure of a 4-dimensional static spacetime, $~^{(3)}\Sigma \times_{f} \reals$, where $^{(3)}\Sigma $ is the Riemannian hypersurface orthogonal to a timelike Killing vector field with norm given by a positive function, $f$ on $^{(3)}\Sigma $. For a static spacetime which is an Einstein space, it is shown that the locally measurable scalar, I, contains a term which vanishes if and only if $^{(3)}\Sigma$ is conformally flat; also, the vanishing of this term implies (a) $~^{(3)}\Sigma$ is locally foliated by level surfaces of $f$, $^{(2)}S$, which are totally umbilic spaces of constant curvature, and (b) $^{(3)}\Sigma$ is locally a warp-product space. Abstract

The excitation of low frequency plasma waves in an expanding anisotropic cosmological model which contains a magnetic field frozen into the matter and pointing in the longitudinal direction is discussed. Using the exact equations governing finite-amplitude wave propagation in hydromagnetic media within the framework of general theory of relativity, we show that a spectrum of magnetized sound waves will be excited and form large scale ``\textit{damped oscillations}'' on the expanding universe. The characteristic frequency of the excited waves is slightly shifted away from the sound frequency and the shift depends on the strength of the primordial magnetic field. Abstract

The Italian Neuroimaging Network Initiative (INNI) is an expanding repository of brain MRI data from multiple sclerosis (MS) patients recruited at four Italian MRI research sites. We describe the raw data quality of resting-state functional MRI (RS-fMRI) time-series in INNI and the inter-site variability in functional connectivity (FC) features after unified automated data preprocessing. MRI datasets from 489 MS patients and 246 healthy control (HC) subjects were retrieved from the INNI database. Raw data quality metrics included temporal signal-to-noise ratio (tSNR), spatial smoothness (FWHM), framewise displacement (FD), and differential variation in signals (DVARS). Automated preprocessing integrated white-matter lesion segmentation (SAMSEG) into a standard fMRI pipeline (fMRIPrep). FC features were calculated on pre-processed data and harmonized between sites (Combat) prior to assessing general MS-related alterations. Across centers (both groups), median tSNR and FWHM ranged from 47 to 84 and from 2.0 to 2.5, and median FD and DVARS ranged from 0.08 to 0.24 and from 1.06 to 1.22. After preprocessing, only global FC-related features were significantly correlated with FD or DVARS. Across large-scale networks, age/sex/FD-adjusted and harmonized FC features exhibited both inter-site and site-specific inter-group effects. Significant general reductions were obtained for somatomotor and limbic networks in MS patients (vs. HC). The implemented procedures provide technical information on raw data quality and outcome of fully automated preprocessing that might serve as reference in future RS-fMRI studies within INNI. The unified pipeline introduced little bias across sites and appears suitable for multisite FC analyses on harmonized network estimates.

Abstract

Neurodegeneration is a multifactorial process that involves multiple mechanisms. Examples of neurodegenerative diseases are Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, prion diseases such as Creutzfeldt–Jakob’s disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. These are progressive and irreversible pathologies, characterized by neuron vulnerability, loss of structure or function of neurons, and even neuron demise in the brain, leading to clinical, functional, and cognitive dysfunction and movement disorders. However, iron overload can cause neurodegeneration. Dysregulation of iron metabolism associated with cellular damage and oxidative stress is reported as a common event in several neurodegenerative diseases. Uncontrolled oxidation of membrane fatty acids triggers a programmed cell death involving iron, ROS, and ferroptosis, promoting cell death. In Alzheimer’s disease, the iron content in the brain is significantly increased in vulnerable regions, resulting in a lack of antioxidant defenses and mitochondrial alterations. Iron interacts with glucose metabolism reciprocally. Overall, iron metabolism and accumulation and ferroptosis play a significant role, particularly in the context of diabetes-induced cognitive decline. Iron chelators improve cognitive performance, meaning that brain iron metabolism control reduces neuronal ferroptosis, promising a novel therapeutic approach to cognitive impairment.

Abstract

Objective: The objective of this pilot study is to evaluate the ability of lung ultra-sound to provide signs of suspicion of lung cancer in patients with respiratory symptoms related to a real-world setting. Patients and Methods: This is a monocentric pilot study. All patients belonging to the Internal Medicine ward with respiratory symptoms including cough, chest pain or dyspnea were recruited. Pa-tients with previous diagnoses of respiratory diseases were excluded. An ultrasound and chest radi-ography (CR) were performed by expert operator. Computed tomography was carried out in case of discrepant imaging or suspect of cancer. The gold standard was the discharge diagnosis.Results: The final diagnosis included 51 cases of lung cancer, and 386 other diagnoses, which included pneumonia, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), tuberculosis, pneumothorax or fibrosis/restrictive syndrome. Consolidation areas were found in 75.4% of patients diagnosed with lung cancer, in 51% of all other diseases. Single sides pleural effusion was found in 52.9% of lung cancer (4.2% in the absence of pathology vs. 25.1% other diagnoses. A significantly higher prevalence of pleural pain and lactate were observed in cancer patients (23.5% and 34.7%, respectively).
