Abstract

In this paper we prove non-existence and classification results for elliptic fully nonlinear elliptic degenerate conformal equations on certain subdomains of the sphere with prescribed constant mean curvature along its boundary. We also consider non-degenerate equations. Such subdomains are the hemisphere (or a geodesic ball in $\mathbb{S}^m$), punctured balls and annular domains. Our results extend those of Escobar in when $m\geq 3$, and Hang-Wang and Jimenez in when $m=2$.

Abstract

Our first objective in this paper is to give a natural formulation of the Christoffel problem for hypersurfaces in $H^{n+1}$, by means of the hyperbolic Gauss map and the notion of hyperbolic curvature radii for hypersurfaces. Our second objective is to provide an explicit equivalence of this Christoffel problem with the famous problem of prescribing scalar curvature on $\S^n$ for conformal metrics, posed by Nirenberg and Kazdan-Warner. This construction lets us translate into the hyperbolic setting the known results for the scalar curvature problem, and also provides a hypersurface theory interpretation of such an intrinsic problem from conformal geometry. Our third objective is to place the above result into a more general framework. Specifically, we will show how the problem of prescribing the hyperbolic Gauss map and a given function of the hyperbolic curvature radii in $H^{n+1}$ is strongly related to some important problems on conformally invariant PDEs in terms of the Schouten tensor. This provides a bridge between the theory of conformal metrics on $\S^n$ and the theory of hypersurfaces with prescribed hyperbolic Gauss map in $\H^{n+1}$. The fourth objective is to use the above correspondence to prove that for a wide family of Weingarten functionals $W(\k_1,..., \k_n)$, the only compact immersed hypersurfaces in $H^{n+1}$ on which $W$ is constant are round spheres., Comment: 37 pages

Introducción: El crecimiento es un fenómeno complejo que en pediatría tiene especial relevancia por constituir un indicador fundamental del estado nutricional. Objetivo: Evaluar las diferencias en la interpretación del peso en una muestra de niños de nuestro medio, desde el nacimiento hasta los 18 meses, según los estándares nacionales e internacionales existentes. Métodos: Estudio longitudinal del peso y longitud en una cohorte de 383 niños de 0 a 18 meses representativa de la población aragonesa. Tras un análisis descriptivo se calculó la "puntuación típica" a partir de cinco tablas de crecimiento poblacional. Finalmente se calculó el porcentaje de niños que quedaban por encima o debajo de 2 DE para el peso según el estándar utilizado. Resultados: Del total, 50,1% eran varones y 49,9% mujeres. Abstract

In 2001, Azolla filiculoides Lam., a floating pteridophyte native to the New World, was found in Do˜nana National Park (SW Spain), an European protected area well known for its high value from a conservation point of view and for its ecological vulnerability. Until that time, there had been no exotic aquatic macrophyte observations in the National Park. Since then, surfaces covered by Azolla filiculoides have increased explosively forming thick floating mats which eliminate submersed plants, and seriously threaten the aquatic ecosystems in this important protected area. En 2001, Azolla filiculoides Lam., una pteridofita acuática nativa del Nuevo Mundo, fue encontrada en el Parque Nacional de Doñana (SW España), un espacio protegido europeo bien conocido por su alto valor desde el punto de vista de la conservación y por su vulnerabilidad ecológica. Hasta ese momento, no se había observado ningún macrófito acuático exótico en el Parque Nacional; desde entonces, las superficies cubiertas por Azolla filiculoides se han incrementado de manera explosiva originando gruesas capas flotantes que eliminan las plantas acuáticas sumergidas y amenazan gravemente los ecosistemas acuáticos de este importante espacio protegido.

Abstract

Triphasic waves are usually associated with metabolic encephalopathies but have been reported in patients with other etiologies. The pathophysiology of this EEG pattern remains poorly understood, although they have been attributed to lesion in the connections between the thalamus and cortex. We report a case of top-of-the-basilar artery occlusion with selective paramedian thalamic-mesencephalic infarct in which triphasic waves were evident on the EEG during clinical hypersomnia. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of triphasic waves with selective paramedian thalamomesencephalic infarct. We conclude that triphasic waves are a nonspecific manifestation of diencephalic dysfunction, probably of the paramedian thalamomesencephalic reticular system.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION Disorders of arousal and parasomnias of sleep-wake transition are revisited. Disorders of arousal are: Sleepwalking (SW), confusional arousals (CA) and sleep terrors (ST). SW, CA and ST are different clinical manifestations of the same disorder being ST the most severe and SW the mildest manifestation. Disorders of arousal are typical parasomnias of NREM sleep, mainly slow wave sleep. Pathophysiological mechanism of these disorders is the state's dissociation of wakefulness and sleep. The conjunction of the constitutional factors (genetic, age, sleep privation, drugs, psychological, etc.), and precipitant factors (light, sound, temperature, touch, apnea, gastroesophageal reflux, seizure, fever, psychological, etc.) permit three possible arousal behavioral response: A full awakening, a shift stage of sleep or a partial arousal. Clinical significance of arousal parasomnias depend on the age. In children are caused by developmental and genetic factors and usually are autolimited. In adults usually are caused by psychopathology. In the elderly are often caused by organic brain syndromes. Parasomnias of sleep-wake transition are: Rhythmic movements of sleep, sleeptalking, starts and the nocturnal cramp. Most of them are mild disorders, almost physiological phenomena that usually don't need any treatment.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Growth is a complex phenomenon that has in pediatric age special relevancy because it constitutes a fundamental indicator of nutritional status. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate differences about weight analysis of infants aged 0-18 months depending on the population reference used. METHODS: This is a longitudinal weight and length study in a representative sample of 383 infants from Aragon since birth until 18 months of age. A descriptive analysis was realized and 'z-scores' were calculated from five growth curves. Finally there was calculated the percentage of children who were staying above or under 2DS for weight depending on the standard used. RESULTS: 50.1% were males and 49.9% women. Weight and length of the children were higher in girls than in boys in all the ages (p<0.01). Major differences between weight z-score averages from standards were at 6 months and later. The percentage of children on a weight<2 DS ranged between 0.5 and one 3.3% at 18 months of age depending on the standard. CONCLUSION: Global differences exist when weight is evaluated in the same sample of infants up to 18 months of age depending on different population standards, as well as in the number of children who stay out of the limits of the normality with each of them.
