We present highlights and an overview of 20 FUSE and HST/STIS observations of the bright symbiotic binary EG And. The main motivation behind this work is to obtain spatially-resolved information on an evolved giant star in order to understand the mass-loss processes at work in these objects. The system consists of a low-luminosity white dwarf and a mass-losing, non-dusty M2 giant. The ultraviolet observations follow the white dwarf continuum through periodic gradual occultations by the wind and chromosphere of the giant, providing a unique diagnosis of the circumstellar gas in absorption. Unocculted spectra display high ionization features, such as the OVI resonance doublet which is present as a variable (hourly time-scales), broad wind profile, which diagnose the hot gas close to the dwarf component. Spectra observed at stages of partial occultation display a host of low-ionization, narrow, absorption lines, with transitions observed from lower energy levels up to ~5eV above ground. This absorption is due to chromospheric/wind material, with most lines due to transitions of SiII, PII, NI, FeII and NiII, as well as heavily damped HI Lyman series features. No molecular features are observed in the wind acceleration region despite the sensitivity of FUSE to molecular hydrogen. From analysis of the ultraviolet dataset, as well as optical data, we find that the dwarf radiation does not dominate the wind acceleration region of the giant, and that observed thermal and dynamic wind properties are most likely representative of isolated red giants., Comment: To be published in the Astrophysical Journal, January 2008

We describe observational evidence for a new kind of interacting-binary-star outburst that involves both an accretion instability and an increase in thermonuclear shell burning on the surface of an accreting white dwarf. We refer to this new type of eruption as a combination nova. In late 2000, the prototypical symbiotic star Z Andromedae brightened by roughly two magnitudes in the optical. We observed the outburst in the radio with the VLA and MERLIN, in the optical both photometrically and spectroscopically, in the far ultraviolet with FUSE, and in the X-rays with both Chandra and XMM. The two-year-long event had three distinct stages. During the first stage, the optical rise closely resembled an earlier, small outburst that was caused by an accretion-disk instability. In the second stage, the hot component ejected an optically thick shell of material. In the third stage, the shell cleared to reveal a white dwarf whose luminosity remained on the order of 10^4 Lsun for approximately one year. The eruption was thus too energetic to have been powered by accretion alone. We propose that the initial burst of accretion was large enough to trigger enhanced nuclear burning on the surface of the white dwarf and the ejection of an optically thick shell of material. This outburst therefore combined elements of both a dwarf nova and a classical nova. We performed extensive, multi-wavelength observations of the prototypical symbiotic star Z Andromedae between 2000 and 2003, during a large eruption. The rise to optical maximum occurred in three distinct stages. During the first stage, the rise was very similar to an earlier, small outburst which we determined was due to an accretion-disk instability. In the second stage, an optically thick shell of material was ejected, and in the third stage, the shell cleared to reveal a white dwarf whose luminosity was roughly 10^4 Lsun. We suggest that the outburst was powered by an increase in the rate of nuclear burning on the white-dwarf surface, triggered by a sudden burst of accretion. Spectra of the bright symbiotic star AG Draconis (BD+67D922) in the wavelength range 905-1187 A obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) are presented. The spectra show a number of narrow, nebular emission lines, together with a uniform continuum from the hot component of the system, and numerous interstellar absorption lines. We infer the existence of Ne VIII in the AG Dra nebula through the identification of the Ne VII 973.3 A recombination line. The emission line spectrum is dominated by intense lines of O VI, but also shows weaker lines from highly-ionized ions including Ne V, Ne VI, S IV, S VI. Members of the He II Balmer series can be identified up to n=20. Lines of Fe II and Fe III fluoresced by O VI 1032 are identified at wavelengths 1141.172 A and 1142.429 A, respectively. The emission lines are shown to be produced in a plasma with an electron temperature of 20-30,000 K, photoionized by the white dwarf. The Ne VI 997/999 ratio shows that this ion and all others except perhaps Ne VII are formed at least 300 white dwarf radii from the white dwarf. We describe the first results from a program of multi-wavelength monitoring of symbiotic binary stars in outburst. The prototypical symbiotic star Z Andromedae was observed extensively at radio, optical, far-UV, and X-ray wavelengths during its current (ongoing) outburst. These observations provide evidence for an initial obscuration or the source of ionizing radiation by an optically thick shell of material, outflow with velocities of 100s of km/s, plus collisional excitation and shock heating of the red-giant wind. In addition, the optical light curve reveals variability on time scales as short as days on both the rise to and decline from optical maximum., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure. Symbiotic stars are binary systems consisting of a hot star, typically a white dwarf, and a cool giant companion. The wind from the cool star is ionized by the radiation from the hot star, resulting in the characteristic combination of sharp nebular emission lines and stellar molecular absorption lines in the optical spectrum. Most of the emission lines are readily identifiable with common ions. However, two strong, broad emission lines at $\lambda\lambda$ 6825, 7082 defied identification with known atoms and ions. In 1989 Schmid made the case that these long unidentified emission lines resulted from the Raman scattering of the O VI resonance photons at $\lambda\lambda$ 1032, 1038 by neutral hydrogen. We present contemporaneous far-UV and optical observations of direct and Raman scattered O VI lines for nine symbiotic stars obtained with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (Astro-2) and various ground-based telescopes. The O VI emission lines are present in every instance in which the $\lambda\lambda$ 6825, 7082 lines are present in support of the Schmid Raman scattering model. We calculate scattering efficiencies and interpret the results in terms of the Raman models. Additionally, we measure the flux of the Fe II fluorescence line at $\lambda$1776, which is excited by the O VI line at $\lambda$1032, and calculate the first estimates of the conversion efficiencies of this process., Comment: 48 pages, 5 figures

We present the imaging observations made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph of the Hubble Deep Field - South. The field was imaged in 4 bandpasses: a clear CCD bandpass for 156 ksec, a long-pass filter for 22-25 ksec per pixel typical exposure, a near-UV bandpass for 23 ksec, and a far-UV bandpass for 52 ksec. The clear visible image is the deepest observation ever made in the UV-optical wavelength region, reaching a 10 sigma AB magnitude of 29.4 for an object of area 0.2 square arcseconds. The field contains QSO J2233-606, the target of the STIS spectroscopy, and extends 50"x50" for the visible images, and 25"x25" for the ultraviolet images. The quasar in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDFS), J2233-606 (z=2.23) has been exhaustively observed by ground based telescopes and by the STIS spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope at low, medium and high resolution in the spectral interval from 1120 A to 10000 A. This very large base-line represents a unique opportunity to study in detail the distribution of clouds associated with emitting structures in the field of the quasar and in nearby fields already observed as part of the HDFS campaign. Here we report the main properties of the Lyman-alpha clouds in the intermediate redshift range 1.20-2.20, where our present knowledge has been complicated by the difficulty in producing good data. The number density is shown to be higher than what is expected by extrapolating the results from both lower and higher redshifts: 63\pm8 lines with log N_{HI}\geq14.0 are found (including metal systems) at =1.7, to be compared with ~40 lines predicted by extrapolating from previous studies. The redshift distribution of the Lyman-alpha clouds shows a region spanning z=1.383-1.460 (comoving size of 94 h^{-1}_{65} Mpc, Omega_o=1) with a low density of absorption lines; we detect 5 lines in this region, compared with the 16 expected from an average density along the line of sight. The two point correlation function shows a positive signal up to scales of about 3 h^{-1}_{65} Mpc and an amplitude that is larger for larger HI column densities. The average Doppler parameter is about 27 km/s, comparable to the mean value found at z > 3, thus casting doubts on the temperature evolution of the Lyman-alpha clouds., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 on eleven occasions at 1-2 day intervals using the Berkeley spectrometer during the ORFEUS-SPAS II mission in 1996 November. The mean spectrum covers 912-1220 A at ~0.3 A resolution with a total exposure of 15,658 seconds. The mean flux at 1000 A was 4.7e-13 erg/cm^2/s/A. We identify the neutral hydrogen absorption with a number of components that correspond to the velocity distribution of \ion{H}{1} seen in our own Galaxy as well as features identified in the CIV 1549 absorption profile by Weymann et al. The main component of neutral hydrogen in NGC 4151 has a total column density of log N_HI = 18.7 +/- 1.5 cm^{-2} for a Doppler parameter b=250 +/- 50 km/s, and it covers 84 +/- 6% of the source. This is consistent with previous results obtained with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope. Other intrinsic far-UV absorption features are not resolved, but the CIII* 1176 absorption line has a significantly higher blueshift relative to NGC 4151 than the CIII 977 resonance line. This implies that the highest velocity region of the outflowing gas has the highest density. Variations in the equivalent width of the CIII* 1176 absorption line anticorrelate with continuum variations on timescales of days. For an ionization timescale <1 day, we set an upper limit of 25 pc on the distance of the absorbing gas from the central source. The OVI 1034 and HeII 1085 emission lines also vary on timescales of 1-2 days, but their response to the continuum variations is complex. We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516 twice during the flight of Astro-2 using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope in March 1995. Simultaneous X-ray observations were performed with ASCA. Our far-ultraviolet spectra cover the spectral range 820-1840 A with a resolution of 2-4 A. No significant variations were found between the two observations. The total spectrum shows a red continuum, $f_\nu \sim \nu^{-1.89}$, with an observed flux of $\rm 2.2 \times 10^{-14}~erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}~\AA^{-1}$ at 1450 A, slightly above the historical mean. Intrinsic absorption in Lyman $\beta$ is visible as well as absorption from O~vi 1032,1038, N~v 1239,1243, Si~iv 1394,1403, and C~iv 1548,1551. The UV absorption lines are far weaker than is usual for NGC~3516, and also lie closer to the emission line redshift rather than showing the blueshift typical of these lines when they are strong. The neutral hydrogen absorption, however, is blueshifted by $400~\rm km~s^{-1}$ relative to the systemic velocity, and it is opaque at the Lyman limit. The sharpness of the cutoff indicates a low effective Doppler parameter, $b < \rm 20~km~s^{-1}$. For $b = \rm 10~km~s^{-1}$ the derived intrinsic column is $\rm 3.5 \times 10^{17}~cm^{-2}$. As in NGC~4151, a single warm absorber cannot produce the strong absorption visible over the wide range of observed ionization states. We obtained X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~3516 in March 1995 using ASCA. Simultaneous far-UV observations were obtained with HUT on the Astro-2 shuttle mission. The ASCA spectrum shows a lightly absorbed power law of energy index 0.78. The low energy absorbing column is significantly less than previously seen. Prominent O~vii and O~viii absorption edges are visible, but, consistent with the much lower total absorbing column, no Fe K absorption edge is detectable. A weak, narrow Fe~K$\alpha$ emission line from cold material is present as well as a broad Fe~K$\alpha$ line. These features are similar to those reported in other Seyfert 1 galaxies. A single warm absorber model provides only an imperfect description of the low energy absorption. In addition to a highly ionized absorber with ionization parameter $U = 1.66$ and a total column density of $1.4 \times 10^{22}~\rm cm^{-2}$, adding a lower ionization absorber with $U = 0.32$ and a total column of $6.9 \times 10^{21}~\rm cm^{-2}$ significantly improves the fit. The contribution of resonant line scattering to our warm absorber models limits the Doppler parameter to $< 160~\rm km~s^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence. Turbulence at the sound speed of the photoionized gas provides the best fit. None of the warm absorber models fit to the X-ray spectrum can match the observed equivalent widths of all the UV absorption lines.
