Abstract

Se presenta un análisis morfométrico de cuencas en los Andes Centrales del oeste de Argentina, mediante el uso de Sistemas de Información Geográfica y sensores remotos. La correcta identificación de cuencas resulta prioritaria en numerosos estudios como el manejo de inundaciones, manejo de aguas, protección de cuencas, preservación y planificación de recursos hídricos. Si bien el análisis automático de cuencas es una herramienta de uso común, no se es muy aplicado en estudios de cuencas Argentinas. En el presente estudio se han delineado exitosamente 17 cuencas mediante el método automático y modelos digitales de elevación (MDE), en una sección de la ruta International 150. Estas 17 cuentas delineadas se compararon posteriormente con aquellas cuencas delineadas manualmente. La delineación automática se compara muy bien con las delineaciones manuales, generalmente siguiendo las divisorias de agua, además mediante el método automático se reduce notablemente la carga de trabajo incluido el reprocesamiento y la edición. Estadísticamente, la diferencia absoluta entre las áreas delimitadas automáticamente y derivada manualmente fue del 5.29 por ciento, en promedio, en un rango de 0.50 a 13.83 por ciento. Finalmente, se realizó un análisis de descarga máxima. Las ligeras diferencias en algunos resultados fueron irrelevantes, al considerar la cantidad de recursos y el tiempo ahorrado con las técnicas automatizadas. A morphometric analysis using Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing tools was performed to study the Agua Negra River basin, in the Central Andes of western Argentina. Well-delineated drainage basin boundaries are a critical factor in numerous natural resources studies such as flood assessment, water-usage, basin protection, preservation, planning, and resources management. In spite of their advantages, morphometry and automatic delineation of basins have rarely been applied in western Argentina. Through such an approach, the current study has successfully used computer-assisted methods and digital elevation models to delineate 17 basins through which a section of International 150 road passes. The resulting automated delineations were later compared with digital-manual delineations made with digital satellite imagery and topographic maps. The computer-assisted delineation compared very well to the digital-manual delineations, generally following drainage divides. The work load (including reprocessing and editing) was sharply decreased with the DEM computer-assisted delineating method, because digitally derived polygonal sub-basins areas were delineated in shorter times than those of the conventional manual method. Statistically, the absolute difference between computer-assisted and manually-derived basin area delineations was 5.29 percent, in average, on a range of 0.50 – 13.83 percent. In addition, a peak discharge analysis has been done as well. Abstract

La cuenca del río del Agua nace en el extremo sur de la sierra del Tontal, departamento Sarmiento en la provincia de San Juan. En el presente trabajo se analizan diversas características morfométricas de la cuenca y se calculan algunos parámetros básicos (área, perímetro, longitud, altitud y pendiente del cauce principal, entre otros), en términos de su incidencia en el comportamiento y respuesta hidrológica del sistema. Los resultados indican que el comportamiento de la cuenca está determinado principalmente por las fuertes pendientes del sector montañoso, el orden 7 de la red de drenaje, una relación de bifurcación media de 5,14 y una alta torrencialidad, que ante la presencia de lluvias excepcionales, la convierte en una zona potencialmente peligrosa con posibilidades de altos niveles de destrucción. Estos estudios resultan muy útiles para el manejo de cuencas, principalmente en áreas donde no existe adecuada información climática de base. The del Agua river basin its located on the southern portion of the sierra del Tontal, in Sarmiento department of San Juan province. In the present research, several morphometric characteristics of the basin are analyzed and some basic parameters (area, perimeter, length, altitude and slope of the main channel, etc.) are calculated. The results suggest that the hydrological response of the basin are determined by steep slopes and steep channels in the mountain area, a 7 order drainage network, mean bifurcation relationship of 5,14 and high torrentiality that in case of exceptional rainfalls, makes it a potentially dangerous area with high levels of destruction. Abstract

Numerosas formas de relieve ubicadas en el área de la faja plegada y corrida de la Precordillera Central de Argentina, que a menudo se asocian con una tectónica compresiva, están de hecho relacionadas con procesos gravitacionales superficiales. Estas estructuras de colapso gravitacional se han desarrollado en el flanco occidental de las sierras de La Dehesa y Talacasto, éstas incluyen deslizamientos, caídas de rocas, pliegues en rodilla, deslizamientos planares y flaps, entre otros; que en conjunto constituyen un pliegue monoclinal que inclina entre 30º y 60º hacia el oeste. Las estructuras de colapso por gravedad son paralelas al rumbo regional de la Sierra de la Dehesa y se originan en calizas y dolomías del Ordovícico. Su pendiente hacia el oeste, la presencia de planos de estratificación, las fracturas y diaclasas; y la litología (intercalaciones de calizas con bancos incompetentes arcillosos) habrían favorecido su ocurrencia. El despegue y transporte inicial de las estructuras gravitacionales y deslizamientos de rocas en el flanco occidental de la Sierra de la Dehesa estuvieron estrechamente controlados por tres elementos estructurales: 1) la estratificación cuando inclina >30° en la dirección de la pendiente; 2) los juegos de diaclasas que constituyen grietas de tracción lateral y transversal que liberan tensiones por tracción; y 3) las discontinuidades que fragmentan superficies deslizantes. Algunos otros factores que podrían caracterizarse como locales (litología, estructura y topografía) y regionales (elevada actividad sísmica y posiblemente condiciones más húmedas durante el período post-glacial) fueron determinantes para favorecer la pérdida de equilibrio de la ladera occidental en las estribaciones orientales de la Precordillera Central. Several landforms found in the fold-and-thrust belt area of the Andean Central Precordillera of Argentina, which were often associated with tectonic shortening, are in fact related to superficial gravity tectonic structures. These gravitational collapse structures have developed in the western flank of sierras de La Dehesa and Talacasto. These include rock-slides, rock falls, wrinkle folds, slip sheets and flaps, among others; which together constitute a monoclinal fold dipping between 30° and 60° to the west. Gravity collapse structures are parallel to the regional strike of the sierras de la Dehesa and Talacasto are placed in Ordovician limestones and dolomites. Their sloping towards the west, the presence of bed planes, fractures and joints; and the lithology (limestone interbedded with incompetent argillaceous layers) would have favored their occurrence. Detachment and initial transport of gravity collapse structures and rockslides in the western flank of the Sierra de la Dehesa were tightly controlled by three structural elements: 1) the bedding, when It is dipping >30° in the slope direction; 2) joint sets that constitute lateral and transverse traction cracks which release extensional stresses; and 3) discontinuities fragmenting sliding surfaces. Some other factors that could be characterized as local (lithology, structure and topography) and as regional (high seismic activity and possibly wetter conditions during the postglacial period) were determinant in favoring the steady loss of the western mountain side in the easternmost foothills of the Central Precordillera. 32. Catastrophic debris flow triggered by an extreme rainfall event in the Volcán village, January 2017. Cordillera Oriental of Argentina.

Abstract

Slides, rockfalls, debris floods and debris flows are periodical events in the dry mountainous regions of Argentina, during times of torrential rainfalls. In the Grande River basin, Jujuy Province, these processes take place almost every summer. Extreme rainfall on January 10, 2017 caused the seasonal acceleration of large-scale and slow-moving landslides in the Los Filtros River basin. These slides broke down into a disaggregated mass, triggering a debris flow which transformed progressively downstream into a debris flood, producing widespread damage along a narrow valley (named Quebrada de Humahuaca), with the Volcán village withstanding the worst of the disaster. The event caused four fatalities and great economic losses, mainly destroying infrastructure and buildings. In order to document this catastrophic event and to explore its causes, a morphometric analysis of the Los Filtros river basin, tributary of the western margin of the Grande River and located on the Cordillera Oriental area, was carried out. The drainage network was derived from digital elevation models. In addition, some landslides were mapped using high-resolution satellite data acquired before and after the event. Of a total landslide area of 2.39 km², 0.60 km² was considered as active and 0.089 km² as new sliding area (from 2015 to 2017) associated to the large-scale and slow-moving landslides. The geological characteristics of the study basin are very favourable conditioning factors in landslide generation. Precambrian-age low grade metaclastics shatter in the frost climate of the higher mountains and poorly consolidated Quaternary deposits along the sides of the gully erode readily and become source material for landslide that damage or bury roads, railroads, and houses. Finally, this study aims to increase knowledge of all the above-mentioned events in order to provide several methods of analysis for landslide prevention and control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Se describen en este trabajo numerosas deformaciones cuaternarias presentes en el relleno sedimentario de la depresión longitudinal Matagusanos-Maradona-Acequión, ubicada entre la Precordillera Central y Oriental, en la provincia de San Juan, en el centro-oeste argentino. Esta depresión está surcada por estructuras frágiles submeridianas, afectando a depósitos aluviales pleistocenos y holocenos, y están organizadas según dos sistemas con vergencias opuestas: uno con vergencia oriental y estilo de piel fina, a semejanza de la Precordillera Central, y otro convergencia occidental y piel gruesa, como el de Precordillera Oriental, hecho que manifestaría la presencia de una zona triangular de piel gruesa. Este arreglo estructural se manifiesta prácticamente a lo largo de toda la depresión analizada, variando sin embargo, la posición del eje de dicha zona triangular hacia el este o el oeste. We herein present numerous evidence of Quaternary deformation within the fill of the Matagusanos-Maradona-Acequión depression, located between the Precordillera Central and Oriental, in the San Juan province of central-western Argentina. The Pleistocene-Holocene alluvial fill of this depression is crosscut by north-south trending thrust faults, arranged in two major trends of opposite vergency: a thin-skinned east verging one, very similar to the Precordillera Central style of deformation, and a second basement-involved west-verging one, resembling the structural style of the Precordillera Oriental, fact indicating the presence of a thick-skinned triangle zone. This structural configuration is present along most of this tectonic depression, although varying the position of the axis of this triangular area to the east and west. Abstract

Flash floods occur periodically in the hilly areas of Argentina but since they generally occur at inhabited areas, these are rarely registered. Several factors contribute to the occurrence of flash floods: heavy seasonal rains, rugged topography and geological structures. On Thursday night 23 January 2014 an extreme rainfall event took place in El Rodeo, Catamarca Province, triggering an unexpected flash flood. This flood caused 14 fatalities and great economic losses in the main localities of the Ambato Department. Steep slope gradients facilitated the quick drainage of the precipitated volumes. Water, boulders and debris channeled downstream caused severe stream bank erosion and major damage to houses roads and bridges. This paper presents a morphometric analysis in order to determine some geomorphic characteristics of the Ambato River basin together with a preliminary analysis of the flood hazard potentially damaging to inhabitants and infrastructure to downstream villages. The study was carried out using high-resolution satellite data acquired before and after the event. The drainage networks were derived from Aster GDEM V2 and satellite images. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
