Improving the practice of hand washing is vital to decrease hygiene-related morbidity and mortality, particularly in developing countries. As such, this study aimed to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices of hand washing among schoolchildren in Aderash primary school, Yirgalem town.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 279 schoolchildren from March to May 2019. A pretested structured questionnaire was applied to collect all relevant information using simple random sampling. Data entry and clearance was done with Epi-Info version 7 and exported to SPSS version 20 for analysis. Adjusted ORs with 95% CI were used to assess statistically significant variables (p< 0.05).Results: Overall, 62.7% of schoolchildren had adequate knowledge of hand washing, 61.3% exhibited positive attitudes toward hand washing and 39.1% had good hand-washing practices. Over three quarters (89%) of them had good knowledge of washing hands with soap. About 24%, 56.6%, 9.3%, 6.5%, and 3.6% of children reported washing hands after defecation, before meals, after meals, after work, and after play, respectively. In addition, 73.8% of them reported washing hands with soap if their hands looked dirty or smelled bad. Urban dwelling increased knowledge of hand washing of 1.3-fold (95% CI 1.2– 2.85).Conclusion: Even though > 60% of children had adequate knowledge and exhibited positive attitudes toward hand washing, proper hand-washing practices was < 40%. Therefore, much effort should be directed toward improving children’s understanding of the benefits of proper hand washing in schools.Keywords: knowledge, attitude, hand-washing practice, primary school children, Yirgalem

The evidence that supports the prevalence of the WNV infection in Ethiopia is very scarce. Hence, this study aimed to assess the seropositivity of WNV among patients with acute febrile illness.Methods: This health institution-based descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on 532 acute febrile patients from May to August 2016 in Arba Minch Zuria district selected public health facilities, Southern Ethiopia. A pre-structured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic and clinical related information of the participants through convenient sampling techniques. In addition, trained nurses who were working in the health centers were responsible for interviewing acute febrile patients. About 5 mL of venous blood was collected aseptically from each of the study participants for the screening of the WNV immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies using indirect immunofluorescence technique (IIFT) as per manufacturer’s protocol. Data analysis was done using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 20 software and the results were presented by frequency and percentage using tables.Results: A total number of 529 acute febrile patients (42.7% males and 57.3% females) were enrolled in the study with a response rate of 99.4%. The overall 7.4% of acute febrile patients were seropositive for WNV-specific IgG and the rate was higher in males (9.7%) when compared to females (5.6%). While the overall 4.5% were seropositive for WNV-specific IgM and the rate was 6.6% in males and 3.0% in females.Conclusion: The finding of this study is an important alarm for clinicians/physicians to diagnose febrile patients in the divergent direction including with the diagnosis of flaviviruses. In addition, the finding will further contribute to understanding the epidemiology of WNV fever in Ethiopia and it will play a role in the delivery of public health measures to decrease the risk of WNV exposure in the areas.Keywords: West Nile virus, acute febrile patients, Arba Minch Zuria district, Southern Ethiopia

In this study, an experimental investigation on the drilling of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastic (UD-CFRP) composite was conducted using polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tipped eight facet drill. The quality of the drilled hole surface was examined through surface roughness measurements and surface damage by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that fiber pullout occurred in two specific sectors relative to the angle between the cutting direction and the fiber orientation. The thrust force was highly influenced by the feed rate than the cutting speed and it shows a significant variation throughout the rotation of the drill.

This study focuses on the development of a mathematical model to address the dynamics of cholera transmission in Nigeria, a country frequently plagued by cholera outbreaks due to several socio-environmental factors. The mathematical model incorporates treatment mechanisms and aims to provide a framework for controlling the disease. We obtained the basic reproduction number (), which determined the conditions for local and global asymptotic stability of the model. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate the impact of various parameters on, revealing that contact rate between susceptible and infected individuals, as well as the transition from exposed to actively infected population, significantly influenced disease spread. Numerical simulations further support the theoretical findings, demonstrating that reducing contact between susceptible and infected individuals and enhancing the treatment rate for infected persons can effectively mitigate the cholera burden. Based on these findings, recommendations include increasing government commitment to treatment facilities, organizing public awareness campaigns on sanitation, and improving infrastructure related to water treatment, waste management, and flood control. The study aimed to investigate the effect of computer simulation and animation-integrated instruction on pre-service science teacher trainees' conceptual understanding and retention of acid-base chemistry and stoichiometry. A quantitative approach with a pretest–posttest-delayed test quasi-experimental design was used. In the study area, there were only two sections of first-year trainees in the natural science department. So a comprehensive sampling technique of the two intact sections was employed. The two intact classes were randomly assigned to an intervention group (IG) and a comparison group (CG). Data was collected using Acid-Base Chemistry and Stoichiometry Conceptual Understanding of a two-tier multiple-choice Test (ABSCUT). Parametric statistics (independent sample t-test and ANCOVA) were used for the data analysis. The independent sample t-test was used for the pre-test analysis to examine the prerequisite experiences of trainees in the two groups and male and female trainees in the IG before the intervention. The result showed no significant difference between the mean score of the CG and IG. The result also showed no significant difference in the mean score of male and female trainees in the IG. The ANCOVA was used for post-test and delayed test analysis after the intervention. The result indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups on conceptual understanding, F (1, 49) =5.07, p=.029, partial eta squared=0.094, in favor of IG. This tends to imply the concepts of the trainees who received the intervention outperformed the comparison group. The ANCOVA result also indicated that gender difference has no statistically significant difference in the IG, F(1,24)=3.68, p=.067. The delayed-test analysis showed that the IG has higher retention than the CG. Based on the results, this study recommended that policymakers, chemistry curriculum experts, chemistry curricular material developers, and practitioners alike consider the application of computer simulation-integrated chemistry instruction to enhance learners’ conceptual understanding and retention.

The simplest atom known to exist in nature is electronic hydrogen atom, which helps us to study fundamental properties and structure of atoms. We can also have muonic hydrogen by replacing electron with muon. In this paper, we revisit Schrodinger equation as an attempt to address the relativistic mass correction to electronic and muonic hydrogen-like atoms with potentials from finite size sources. This study is done with the assumption that the changes in both energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are negligible when considering the finite size of the nuclei. The relativistic mass corrections to and states using potential from finite size source are obtained and compared with corrections using potential from point-like source. The results show that, for hydrogen-like atoms with light nuclei the relativistic mass corrections due to the finite size source roughly coincides with that of point-like source. However, for atoms with heavy nuclei the two corrections display strong disagreement in which the corrections with finite size nuclei are significantly smaller than that of point-like nuclei.

In this paper, optimal control theory is applied to Herpes Simplex Virus-II transmission model given by a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations. Optimal control strategy was employed to study the level of effort needed to control the transmission dynamics of HSV-II diseases using three controls; prevention, screening and treatment control strategies. The necessary conditions for the existence of the optimal controls was established using Pontryagin’s Maximum Principle. Optimal control system was performed with help of Runge-Kutta forward-backward sweep numerical approximation method. Finally, numerical simulations reveal that a combination of prevention, screening and treatment is the most effective strategy to eradicate the disease from the community.

The results show that the disease free equilibrium is locally asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction is less than one. The endemic states are considered to exist when the basic reproduction number for each disease is greater than one. Finally, numerical simulations of the model equations are carried out using the software MATLAB R2015b with ODE45 solver. Numerical simulations illustrated that all infection solutions converge to zero when the basic reproduction number is less than unity.

Abstract Background Ginger bacterial wilt is the most destructive disease that causes qualitative and quantitative rhizome yield losses in Ethiopia. Field studies were conducted to assess yield loss caused by bacterial wilt of ginger in different wilt management systems at Teppi and Jimma, Ethiopia, during 2017. Management systems were host resistance (Boziab and Local) and cultural practices (lemon grass, potassium fertilizer and soil solarization), which were applied as sole and in different levels of integrations. The experiments were factorial arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Disease, growth, yield and yield-related data were collected from central rows of each experimental plot. Data were subjected to analysis of variance using linear general model (GLM) procedure of SAS version 9.3. Mean separation was made using least significant difference test. Correlation among parameters and linear regression of rhizome yield versus final wilt incidence were computed using Minitab 14 statistical package. Results Analysis of variance indicated that variety, cultural practices and variety × cultural practice interaction effects significantly reduced wilt incidence and increased rhizome yield and its components. Variety Boziab recorded relatively more yield and yield components than the Local variety. Rhizome yield gains of about 51.4% in Local and 51.9% in Boziab at Teppi and 39.4% in Local and 49.1% in Boziab at Jimma were obtained due to integrated application of lemon grass with soil solarization and soil fertilization. The mean relative yield loss calculated for control plots due to bacterial wilt ranged from 51.4 to 51.9% at Teppi and 39.4 to 49.1% at Jimma. The lowest relative yield loss was computed from plots treated with either lemon grass with soil fertilization and solarization or lemon grass with soil fertilization. Final wilt incidence was inversely and highly significantly (P ≤ 0.001) correlated (r = − 0.90** and − 0.88**) with rhizome yield of Boziab and Local, respectively, at Teppi. The slope of the regression line also estimated that for each unit increase in percent of final mean wilt incidence, there was a rhizome yield reduction of 0.18 t ha−1 for Boziab and 0.19 t ha−1 for Local variety at Teppi. Similar trends were observed at Jimma. Moreover, the most integrated treatment provided higher net benefit with optimum marginal rate of return than others. Conclusion The overall results indicated that integration of host resistance with cultural practices reduces yield loss, improves ginger productivity and significantly reduces bacterial wilt epidemics, and thus, it is recommended in the study areas and other related agroecologies.

Abstract Background Routine health information systems (RHIS) are vital for the acquisition of data for health sector planning, monitoring, and evaluation. However, in developing countries the insufficient quality of the data produced by RHIS limits their usefulness in decision-making. As routine health information utilization is still low in Ethiopia, this study aimed to assess the magnitude of routine health data utilization and associated factors among health care professionals in some public health institutions in North Gondar, northwest Ethiopia. Methods An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted from March to April2017, at public health institutions of North Gondar Zone, northwest Ethiopia. A total of 720 health care professionals were selected from public health institutions using the multi-stage sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire and an observational checklist, cleaned, coded, and entered into Epi-info version 3.5.3 and transferred into SPSS version 20 for further statistical analysis. In the multiple logistic regression analysis, a less than 0.05 P-vale was considered statistically significant. Result In this study, the level of good routine health information utilization among health professionals was 78.5% (95% CI: 73.2%, 84.3%). According to the multivariable logistic regression analysis, sex (AOR = 2.19, 95% CI: 1.47, 3.27), type of institution (AOR = 3.57, 95% CI: 2.39, 5.32), standard indicators (AOR = 3.28, 95% CI: 1.90, 5.65), data analysis skills (AOR = 1.90, 95% CI: 1.12, 3.23), and good governance (AOR = 1.97, 95% CI: 1.31, 2.95), were found significantly associated with a good level of health information utilization. Conclusion Over three-fourths of the health care professionals working at public health institutions of North Gondar utilized health information better than the respondents in previous studies. Sex, type of institution, standard indicators, data analysis skills, and governance were factors related to routine health information utilization. Therefore, standard indicators, data analysis skills and good governance are highly recommended for improving routine health data utilization of health care professionals working at public health institutions.

Wheat rust diseases pose one of the greatest threats to global food security, including subsistence farmers in Ethiopia. The fungal spores transmitting wheat rust are dispersed by wind and can remain infectious after dispersal over long distances. The emergence of new strains of wheat rust has exacerbated the risks of severe crop loss. We describe the construction and deployment of a near real-time early warning system (EWS) for two major wind-dispersed diseases of wheat crops in Ethiopia that combines existing environmental research infrastructures, newly developed tools and scientific expertise across multiple organisations in Ethiopia and the UK. The EWS encompasses a sophisticated framework that integrates field and mobile phone surveillance data, spore dispersal and disease environmental suitability forecasting, as well as communication to policy-makers, advisors and smallholder farmers. The system involves daily automated data flow between two continents during the wheat season in Ethiopia. The framework utilises expertise and environmental research infrastructures from within the cross-disciplinary spectrum of biology, agronomy, meteorology, computer science and telecommunications. The EWS successfully provided timely information to assist policy makers formulate decisions about allocation of limited stock of fungicide during the 2017 and 2018 wheat seasons. Wheat rust alerts and advisories were sent by short message service and reports to 10 000 development agents and approximately 275 000 smallholder farmers in Ethiopia who rely on wheat for subsistence and livelihood security. The framework represents one of the first advanced crop disease EWSs implemented in a developing country. It provides policy-makers, extension agents and farmers with timely, actionable information on priority diseases affecting a staple food crop. The framework together with the underpinning technologies are transferable to forecast wheat rusts in other regions and can be readily adapted for other wind-dispersed pests and disease of major agricultural crops.

Objective: Maternal mortality in Ethiopia is estimated to be 205 per 100,000 live births, with postpartum morbidities expected to surpass maternal mortality substantially. Beside this, there is a lack of information on postpartum morbidities in the study area. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess the magnitude of postpartum morbidities and associated factors in Bale Robe Town, southeast Ethiopia., Method: An institution-based cross-sectional study was employed among 371 from 1 April to 30 May 2022 among postpartum women attending postnatal care service in the Bale-Robe Town public health facilities. A face-to-face interviewer administered a structured questionnaire, and the participants were selected through a systematic random sampling technique. A bivariate analysis was performed to see the association between each independent variable and dependent variable, and variables with p -values less than 0.25 in the bivariate analysis were retrieved for multivariable analyses. A p -value of less than 0.05 indicated a 95% confidence interval as the level of statistical significance., Result: A total of 366 participants were involved in the study, giving us a response rate of 98.6%. The magnitude of postpartum morbidities among mothers was found to be 102 (27.9%), with a confidence interval of 95% CI: 23.3, 32.8. Women who hadn't had antenatal care follow-up (AOR = 2.47, 95% CI: 1.36, 4.50), instrumental delivery (AOR = 2.69, 95% CI: 1.16, 6.26), unskilled birth attendant (AOR = 3.35, 95% CI: 1.06, 10.63), rural residence (AOR = 2.21, 95% CI: 1.26, 3.89), and current pregnancy-related morbidity or abnormality (AOR = 3.81, 95% CI: 2.00, 7.25) were significantly associated factors., Conclusion: This study revealed that the occurrence of postpartum morbidity in Bale Robe is a great health concern. Background: Although a universal vaccine is available and Ethiopia is working outstandingly towards measles elimination, a recurrent measles outbreak has occurred each year in different parts of the country. Therefore, understanding the epidemiology of measles cases, the incidence of confirmed measles virus cases and related risk factors is crucial. Here, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize information regarding the epidemiology, measles incidence rate and risk factors for national measles infections occurring in the past two decades, from 2000 to 2023., Methods: Data from electronic databases, including PubMed, African Journal Online, WHO databases and Google Scholars, were searched to identify studies describing measles outbreaks, incidence rates and associated factors in Ethiopia that occurred between 2000 and 2023. Important basic information was extracted in an Excel spreadsheet and imported into Comprehensive Meta-analysis Software version 3 to evaluate the associations between measles outbreaks and different risk factors. We pooled the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for every included risk factor to evaluate the associations with measles outbreaks., Results: We included 36 studies involving 132,502 patients with confirmed measles cases in Ethiopia. The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that measles outbreaks were more frequently reported in the Oromia region (73,310 (33.1%)), followed by the Southern Nation Nationalities of Ethiopia region (29,057 (13.4%)). The overall pooled analysis indicated that the prevalence of measles susceptibility was 67.5% (95% CI: 67.3-67.8%), with an I 2 of 99.86% and a p value for heterogeneity < 0.0001. The non-vaccinated status of the children, their contact history with measles cases, their travel history, the presence of cases in family or neighbors, and malnourished patients were identified as factors associated with the high prevalence and recurrent measles infections in Ethiopia., Conclusion: The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that the pooled prevalence of measles infection was high, which is a public health concern in Ethiopia. Thus, strengthening healthcare services, regular vaccination campaigns, and the integration of health education activities with other services may decrease the incidence rate., (© 2024. Background: Rotavirus infections are a significant cause of severe diarrhea and related illness and death in children under five worldwide. Despite the global introduction of vaccinations for rotavirus over a decade ago, rotavirus infections still result in high deaths annually, mainly in low-income countries, including Ethiopia, and need special attention. This system review and meta-analysis aimed to comprehensively explore the positive proportion of rotavirus at pre- and post-vaccine introduction periods and genotype distribution in children under five with diarrhea in Ethiopia., Methods: The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Database sources included PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Epistemonikos, focusing on studies published before November 30, 2023. The search targeted rotavirus infection and genotype distribution in Ethiopia before and after the introduction of the Rota vaccine. Data was managed using EndNote 2020 software and stored in an Excel 2010 sheet. A random-effects model determined the pooled estimate of the rotavirus infection rate at 95% confidence intervals. The Q-and I² statistics were used to assess the study heterogeneity, and a funnel plot (Egger test) was used to determine the possibility of publication bias., Results: The analysis included data from nine studies conducted in different regions of Ethiopia. The overall prevalence of rotavirus infection was significant, with a prevalence rate of approximately 22.63% (1362/6039). The most common genotypes identified before the Rota vacation introduction were G1, G2, G3, G12, P [4], P [6], P [8], P [9], and P [10]. Meanwhile, G3 and P [8] genotypes were particularly prevalent after the Rota vaccine introduction. These findings highlight the importance of implementing preventive measures, such as vaccination, to reduce the burden of rotavirus infection in this population. The identified genotypes provide valuable insights for vaccine development and targeted interventions., Conclusion: This study contributes to the evidence base for public health interventions and strategies to reduce the impact of rotavirus infection in children under five in Ethiopia. Background: Around one-fourth of maternal deaths worldwide are attributed to hemorrhage. One of the prevalent types of maternal hemorrhage is postpartum hemorrhage. In spite of this, there is very little data on postpartum hemorrhage. Thus, the intention of this study was to determine factors associated with postpartum hemorrhage among mothers who gave birth in the selected Southern Oromia hospitals in Ethiopia., Methods: An institutional-based, unmatched case-control study was employed on a sample of 333 (83 cases and 250 controls) mothers who gave birth from March 1-30, 2021. Standardized and pretested check-lists were used to retrieve data from patients' cards, delivery registration, and operation registration logbooks. Epi Data Version 3.1 was used to enter data, while SPSS Version 25 was used for analysis. Multi-variable logistic regressions were used to identify the determinants of postpartum haemorrhage with a 95% confidence interval and p -value less than 0.05., Results: Mothers who have no antenatal care follow-up (AOR = 1.94, 95% CI = 1.03, 3.64), had pre-partum anemia (AOR = 5.68, 95% CI = 3.13, 10.32), hypertensive disorder during pregnancy (AOR = 3.3, 95% CI = 1.13, 9.64), intrauterine fetal death (AOR = 4.21, 95% CI = 1.68, 10.58), and genital tract trauma during delivery (AOR = 3.23, 95% CI = 1.52, 6.89) were found as determinants of postpartum haemorrhage., Conclusion: The study showed that factors such as lack of antenatal care, pre-partum anemia, pregnancy-related hypertension, intrauterine fetal death and genital tract trauma during delivery were responsible for postpartum hemorrhage. Maternal mortality occurs in developing nations as a result of inadequate health care, delayed medical attention and the inability to access medical facilities. The three-delay model was employed to determine the causes of maternal death. There was limited data on maternal delay in reaching health facilities for emergency obstetric care services in the study area. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of delay in reaching health facilities for emergency obstetric care and associated factors among postpartum mothers at Bale and east Bale zones. An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 407 postnatal women from April 6 to May 6, 2022. A systematic sampling technique was used to select study participants. The data were collected electronically using an Open Data Kit and exported to SPSS window version 25 for cleaning and analysis. Both bivariable and multivariable analysis was done by using a binary logistic regression model to identify factors associated with delay in traveling for emergency obstetric care services. Statistical significance was declared at P-value < 0.05. In this study, the prevalence of delay in reaching health facilities during emergency obstetric care was 38.1% (95%CI: 33.3, 43). The following factors showed significant association with delay in reaching health facilities during emergency obstetric care: Average monthly income (AOR = 1.87; 95% CI: 1.12, 3.14), distance (AOR = 4.35; 95% CI: 2.65, 7.14), a referral from other health facilities (AOR = 1.77; 95% CI: 1.01, 3.11) and delay one (AOR = 2.9; 95% CI: 1.7, 4.93). This study showed that the prevalence of delay in reaching health facilities for emergency obstetric care services in the study area was high. Background: Antimicrobial resistance is one of the common global public health problems. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance is multifactorial, and tackling its development is challenging. Consequently, infections caused by resistant bacteria are unresponsive to conventional drugs, resulting in prolonged and severe illnesses, higher mortality rates, and considerable healthcare costs. Therefore, understanding the antimicrobial resistance profiles of bacterial pathogens is essential to optimize treatments and reduce the risks associated with infections. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial resistance patterns of bacterial isolates from different clinical specimens at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI)., Materials and Methods: The retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on the bacterial culture and antibiotic susceptibility reports of different clinical specimens referred to the Bacteriology Laboratory of EPHI from September 2015 to August 2019. Standard bacteriological techniques were used for the isolation and identification of the bacteria. Data were extracted from 840 patients' records, which included the type of clinical sample cultured, the name of the bacteria, the representations of the antibiotics used for susceptibility testing, and the susceptibility results. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the bacterial isolates and the antimicrobial resistance profiles., Results: Eight types of clinical specimens were analyzed for bacterial isolates and urine specimens were the most analyzed. Ten different genera of bacteria were identified by culture. Almost all the isolates were gram-negative bacteria, while only one species of gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) was reported. Antibiotic sensitivity patterns were tested on 840 culture isolates. Escherichia coli strains revealed more than 57% resistance to seventeen antibiotics. Klebsiella pneumoniae showed nearly 70% or greater resistance rates for 17 of the antibiotics used. The overall detected multidrug resistance (MDR) was 64.29%. The highest MDR was reported in Acinetobacter strains (84%) followed by K. pneumoniae (80%)., Conclusions: The multidrug resistance rates found in this study were alarming. Strengthening antimicrobial resistance surveillance at the national level is mandatory, and antimicrobial sensitivity testing should be accessible at local diagnostic centers., (© 2023. Background: Patient satisfaction is an important aspect of the quality of care in the inpatient setting. In neonatal intensive care units, parents' satisfaction and their experiences are fundamental to assessing clinical practice and improving the quality of care delivered to infants. Hence then, it reduces infant mortality rates globally. In Ethiopia, few studies address the level of parental satisfaction towards care given at neonatal intensive care unit and no single study was done in the study area. Therefore, this study is aimed at assessing parental satisfaction towards care given at neonatal intensive care unit and associated factors in comprehensive and referral hospitals of southern Ethiopia., Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 401 parents who visited neonatal intensive care from March 28 to April 28, 2022. The data were assorted via a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire using ODK collect version and exported to SPSS window version 25 for further cleaning and analysis. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to identify factors associated with parental satisfaction with care given at the neonatal intensive care unit. The adjusted odds ratio with 95% CI was used to show the strength of the association, and a P value < 0.05 was used to declare the cutoff point to determine the level of significance., Results: In this study, 63% (95% CI: 58%, 68%) of the parents were satisfied with the care given at the neonatal intensive care unit. Factors associated with parental satisfaction towards care given at neonatal intensive care unit were parents with no formal education (AOR: 0.15; 95% CI: 0.07-0.31), availability of necessary information using direction indicator (AOR: 3.14; 95% CI: 1.85-5.31), and availability of enough chairs in waiting area (AOR: 3.26; 95% CI: 1.81-5.87)., Conclusion: Nearly two-thirds of the parents were satisfied with the care given at the neonatal intensive care unit. Objective: Obstetric fistula repair failure is a combination of unsuccessful fistula closure and/or incontinence following a successful closure. There is an inconsistent finding on the failure of obstetric fistula repair in East Africa. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of failed obstetric fistula repair and its associated factors among women who have undergone fistula repair in East Africa., Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis were written following the PRISMA guideline protocol. A web-based electronic search of PubMed, Google Scholar, and HINARI was performed to find primary studies. Additional articles were searched by cross-referencing references. A random-effects model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of failed obstetric fistula repair. The heterogeneity of studies was weighed using I 2 test statistics. Publication bias was assessed by Eggers and funnel plot test., Results: The 16 studies that met the inclusion criteria for this systematic review and meta-analysis of failed obstetric fistula repair were included. Nonetheless, one study was used for factor analysis but not in pooled prevalence analysis. The pooled prevalence of obstetric fistula repair failure in East Africa was 26.89% (95% confidence interval: 21.71, 32.07). Labor duration > 48 h (Pooled odds ratio = 2.46; 95% confidence interval 1.58, 3.82), fistula size >3 cm (Pooled odds ratio = 3.92; 95% confidence interval 2.19, 7.05), previous fistula repair (Pooled odds ratio = 3.20; 95% confidence interval 1.94, 5.29), Goh Type 4 fistulas (Pooled odds ratio = 6.07; 95% confidence interval 2.50, 14.75), completely destructed urethra (Pooled odds ratio = 3.35; 95% confidence interval 1.69, 6.65), and severe vaginal scaring (Pooled odds ratio = 3.89; 95% confidence interval 1.99, 7.62) were significantly associated with obstetric fistula repair failure., Conclusions: One in four women with obstetric fistula repair experienced repair failure. Introduction: Delays in timely seeking care, failure to reach health institutions and receiving ineffective health care cause maternal mortality in developing countries. The three maternal delay was used to identify contributing factors to maternal death. There was limited data on the maternal delay in receiving emergency obstetric care services in the study area. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the magnitude of delay in receiving emergency obstetric care and associated factors among postnatal mothers in the Bale and east Bale zones., Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 407 postnatal women from April 6 to May 6, 2022. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select study participants. The data were collected electronically using an Open Data Kit and exported to SPSS window version 25 for cleaning and analysis. Both bivariate and multivariable analyses were done by using a binary logistic regression model to identify factors associated with delay in receiving emergency obstetric care services. Statistical significance was declared at P-value < 0.05., Results: In this study, the magnitude of delay in receiving institutional delivery service utilization was 34.6% with [95% CI (30.0&#95;39.5)]. Delay one was found to be statistically associated with maternal delay in receiving institutional delivery services (AOR = 2.07; 95% CI: 1.21, 3.53). Mothers with low monthly income had shown higher odds of delay (AOR = 1.79; 95% CI: 1.03, 3.10). Moreover, the delay in receiving emergency obstetric care was 89% less likely among mothers who had not been referred multiple times than among those who had been referred many times (AOR = 0.10; 95% CI: 0.06, 0.18)., Conclusion: This study showed that the magnitude of the delay in receiving the utilization of emergency obstetric care services in the study area was high. Factors such as delay one, average monthly income and multiple referrals of mothers were found significant factors for delay in receiving care. Background: Exposure to sunlight is vital for the synthesis of vitamin-D and vitamin D plays an important role in growth and bones strength. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the knowledge and practice of infants exposure to sunlight among lactating women., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from May 01 to 30, 2019 among 327 infant coupled lactating mothers attended at Yirgalem General Hospital. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect relevant data through a convenient sampling technique., Results: A total of 84.7% of respondents exposed infants to sunlight. More than 94% knew the benefit of exposing infants to sunlight. About 20.9%, 25.6%, and 19.9% of mothers exposed infants to sunlight within 15, 16 to 30, and 31 to 45 days of birth, respectively. In addition, 59.9% of respondents exposed infants to sunshine daily and 72.2% exposed without clothing the infants' body. Moreover, 63.5% of mothers have applied lubricants and overall 54.5% of mothers exposed infants to sunlight in good practice. Unemployed women were 4.7 times more likely (aOR; 95%CI: 4.7; 2.0-11.4) to expose infants to sunlight when compared to those employed, while women whose husbands have at least secondary education level were 5.1 times more likely (aOR; 95%CI: 5.1; 1.6-16.1) to expose infants to sunlight when compared to those unable to read and write., Conclusion: More than 45% and more than one-third of lactating mothers had poor practice and exposed infants to sunlight for inadequate time, respectively. Introduction: In the current days, stroke has become one of the common reasons for admission in many health care setups and becoming an alarming public health problem in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to assess the incidence and associated factors of stroke among patients admitted to the medical wards in Yirgalem hospital., Methods: An institution-based retrospective cross-sectional study design was carried out from 01 January 2017, to 30 December 2019. Admitted adult patients' medical charts were used to collect all required information using structured checklists. Data were analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 20 software, and a p value < 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant., Result: From a total of 3016 admitted patients, the incidence of stroke was 3.15% (n = 95). Of the 95 stroke cases, 58.9% were males and 69.5% of them were urban dwellers. 62.1% (59/95) of the stroke patients had an ischemic stroke, whereas 37.9% (36/95) had a hemorrhagic stroke. Patients with age ⩾ 65 years, smokers, hypertension, and type-II diabetes had significantly higher ischemic stroke when compared to patients with hemorrhagic stroke (62.7% vs 30.5%, p = 0.008), (49.1% vs 11.1%, p ⩽ 0.0001), and (71.2%vs 13.9%, p < 0.0001), respectively. While patients with hypertension had a significantly higher rate of hemorrhagic stroke when compared to patients with ischemic stroke (88.9% vs 61%, p = 0.003)., Conclusion: The majority of stroke patients had cardiovascular problems and hypertension. More than 44% and 34.7% of them had a history of alcoholism and smoking. Objective: To assess the strabismus prevalence and associated factors among children aged ≤15 years., Methods: This hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2017 to October 2017 in the Department of Ophthalmology & Optometry, Hawassa University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to collect relevant data and clinical examinations were performed for patient diagnosis., Results: Overall, 582 children participated in the study (response rate, 97%). The prevalence of childhood strabismus was 17.9% [95% confidence interval: 14.6-21.1]. Additionally, 9.6%, 16.7%, and 9.6% of the children had anisometropia, amblyopia, and dense cataract, respectively. Among the 16.7% of children with amblyopia, 56.7% had strabismus; among the 22.5% of children with clinically significant refractive error, 52.7% had strabismus. Moreover, among the 9.6% of children with anisometropia, 58.9% had strabismus. The presence of amblyopia (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 3.9, 1.7-8.6), age <5 years (13.5 [5.0-36.1]), age 5 to 10 years (6.1 [2.3-16.3]), and clinically significant refractive error (13.3 [5.8-30.6]) were significantly associated with childhood strabismus., Conclusions: The prevalence of strabismus was relatively high among patients in this study. Early screening for childhood strabismus is essential. A well-controlled community-based study is needed to confirm strabismus prevalence and predictors.

Background: Dengue fever is an arthropod vector-borne disease transmitted to humans by infected Aedes mosquitoes. Ethiopia has a favorable ecology for arthropods and report high burden of acute febrile illnesses. However, the contribution of arboviral infections to the burden of acute febrile illnesses is barely known. In this study the seropositivity to dengue virus infection and associated risk factors were assessed in Arba Minch districts, southern Ethiopia., Methods: An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted in a consecutive group of 529 acute febrile patients between May to August 2016. Socio-demographic data, residence place and clinical signs and symptoms were collected using structured questionnaires. Sera were tested for anti-dengue IgG and IgM using Euroimmune indirect immunofluorescent assay. Data analysis was done using SPSS V-20 (IBM Corp, 2012). P-value < 0.05 was taken as statistically significant., Result: Seropositivity was 25.1% (133/529) and 8.1% (43/529) for anti- IgG and IgM respectively., Conclusion: The high IgM prevalence detected indicate the probability of active transmission with a potential of public health significance that calls for a proactive follow up of the communities in the study area to forecast and avert the risk.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of neuropathic pain, now recognized as another late complication of leprosy, and its characteristics among leprosy patients. A cross-sectional study was carried out of people treated for leprosy up to at least 5 years ago in a rural area of Ethiopia. Seventy-four patients were interviewed using the Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory (NPSI) questionnaire. In total, 78.9% of the patients were female with a mean age of 42.9. The mean time from initial diagnosis to the time of the study was 28.0 years, and 73.0% of patients were diagnosed over 20 years ago. Fifty-two (70.3%) reported having symptoms suggestive of neuropathic pain and the majority described the pain as burning (88.5%), electric (80.8%), stabbing (76.9%), cutting (76.9%), tingling (65.4%), squeezing (57.7%), and/or pressure (53.8%). The pain caused a severe or moderate impact on daily life in 75% and 57.7% of cases, respectively, and 92.3% suffered from disrupted sleep. Eighty percent of patients with pain (42/52) took some medication for pain relief. Neuropathic pain is common in patients treated for leprosy and in more than half of them, it causes disruption in their daily life and sleep, limiting their quality of life even more.

Knowledge of the most dominant T-cell epitopes in the context of the local human leukocyte antigen (HLA) background is a prerequisite for the development of an effective HIV vaccine. In 100 Ethiopian subjects, 16 different HLA-A, 23 HLA-B, and 12 HLA-C specificities were observed. Ninety-four percent of the population carried at least 1 of the 5 most common HLA-A and/or HLA-B specificities. HIV-specific T-cell responses were measured in 48 HIV-infected Ethiopian subjects representing a wide range of ethnicities in Ethiopia using the interferon (IFN)-gamma enzyme-linked immunospot (Elispot) assay and 49 clade C-specific synthetic Gag peptides. Fifty-eight percent of the HIV-positive study subjects showed T-cell responses directed to 1 or more HIV Gag peptides. Most Gag-specific responses were directed against the subset of peptides spanning Gag p24. The breadth of response ranged from 1 to 9 peptides, with most (78%) individuals showing detectable responses to <3 Gag peptides. The magnitude of HIV-specific T-cell responses was not associated with HIV viral load but correlated positively with CD4 T-cell counts. The most frequently targeted Gag peptides overlapped with those previously described for HIV-1 subtype C-infected southern Africans, and therefore can be used in a multiethnic vaccine.
