Abstract

This study explores various testing techniques' ability to identify activity areas across deeply stratified, open air archaeological sites. To determine the efficacy of different site testing techniques, a systematic ground penetrating radar and auger survey was completed at three sites in central Alaska: Swan Point, Bachner, and Niidhaayh Na'. The results show that both ground penetrating radar and auger survey can indicate subsurface geology, important for sites without exposed vertical deposits. Additionally, systematic auger surveys can be used to identify activity areas at large sites and in components up to 4 m below surface prior to full-scale excavation. This can help archaeologists identify earlier archaeological components and target specific areas that are directly related to their research questions while preserving the rest of the site for future investigations. Compared to traditional shovel testing, auger surveys provide a consistent, efficient, and rigorous method for assessing buried cultural remains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

During the last glacial–interglacial cycle, Arctic biotas experienced substantial climatic changes, yet the nature, extent and rate of their responses are not fully understood1–8. Here we report a large-scale environmental DNA metagenomic study of ancient plant and mammal communities, analysing 535 permafrost and lake sediment samples from across the Arctic spanning the past 50,000 years. Furthermore, we present 1,541 contemporary plant genome assemblies that were generated as reference sequences. Our study provides several insights into the long-term dynamics of the Arctic biota at the circumpolar and regional scales. Our key findings include: (1) a relatively homogeneous steppe–tundra flora dominated the Arctic during the Last Glacial Maximum, followed by regional divergence of vegetation during the Holocene epoch; (2) certain grazing animals consistently co-occurred in space and time; (3) humans appear to have been a minor factor in driving animal distributions; (4) higher effective precipitation, as well as an increase in the proportion of wetland plants, show negative effects on animal diversity; (5) the persistence of the steppe–tundra vegetation in northern Siberia enabled the late survival of several now-extinct megafauna species, including the woolly mammoth until 3.9 ± 0.2 thousand years ago (ka) and the woolly rhinoceros until 9.8 ± 0.2 ka; and (6) phylogenetic analysis of mammoth environmental DNA reveals a previously unsampled mitochondrial lineage. Our findings highlight the power of ancient environmental metagenomics analyses to advance understanding of population histories and long-term ecological dynamics.

Abstract

Roughly 1500 years ago, a group of hunter-gatherers left behind numerous tools and thousands of pieces of lithic production debris at the Clearview site, situated on a rise overlooking the middle Tanana Valley and the Alaska Range in central Alaska. This paper considers the spatial relationships between tool type, debitage production, and material to demonstrate the technological organization at this late Holocene occupation. The diverse assemblage considered here comprises several tools (projectile points, bifacial knives, end and side scrapers, expedient flake tools, burins, and microblades) and raw materials, including obsidian. A comprehensive analysis of this assemblage reveals that the site's occupants undertook a complex lithic reduction sequence focused on intermediate stages of bifacial reduction and late-stage microblade production. Generally, this assemblage appears to represent a residential camp of mobile foragers similar to those associated with the Northern Archaic tradition. The results presented here suggest that significant late Holocene behavioral shifts (e.g., increased subsistence specialization, decreased mobility, increased use of metal and bone tools) occurred after Clearview was occupied. Abstract

Nearly 6,000 years ago, a group of people stopped to camp on a ridge overlooking Banjo Lake in interior Alaska. Climate indicators show spruce moved into the area and a period of surface stabilization occurred just prior to the occupation of the site. The bone and stone artifacts left behind provide clues not only to camp structure and subsistence activities but also to lithic technological organization. This study uses spatial analyses, minimum nodule analyses, and individual flake analyses to determine when and how lithic raw materials and tools entered the site. The Banjo Lake assemblage is different from traditional middle Holocene assemblages in the North as it is focused on microblade technology and therefore supports expanding our notion of the Northern Archaic. Abstract

During the last glacial–interglacial cycle, Arctic biotas experienced substantial climatic changes, yet the nature, extent and rate of their responses are not fully understood1–8. Here we report a large-scale environmental DNA metagenomic study of ancient plant and mammal communities, analysing 535 permafrost and lake sediment samples from across the Arctic spanning the past 50,000 years. Furthermore, we present 1,541 contemporary plant genome assemblies that were generated as reference sequences. Our study provides several insights into the long-term dynamics of the Arctic biota at the circumpolar and regional scales. Our key findings include: (1) a relatively homogeneous steppe–tundra flora dominated the Arctic during the Last Glacial Maximum, followed by regional divergence of vegetation during the Holocene epoch; (2) certain grazing animals consistently co-occurred in space and time; (3) humans appear to have been a minor factor in driving animal distributions; (4) higher effective precipitation, as well as an increase in the proportion of wetland plants, show negative effects on animal diversity; (5) the persistence of the steppe–tundra vegetation in northern Siberia enabled the late survival of several now-extinct megafauna species, including the woolly mammoth until 3.9 ± 0.2 thousand years ago (ka) and the woolly rhinoceros until 9.8 ± 0.2 ka; and (6) phylogenetic analysis of mammoth environmental DNA reveals a previously unsampled mitochondrial lineage. Our findings highlight the power of ancient environmental metagenomics analyses to advance understanding of population histories and long-term ecological dynamics.
