Abstract

High‐resolution texture maps are essential to render photoreal digital humans for visual effects or to generate data for machine learning. The acquisition of high resolution assets at scale is cumbersome, it involves enrolling a large number of human subjects, using expensive multi‐view camera setups, and significant manual artistic effort to align the textures. To alleviate these problems, we introduce GANtlitz (A play on the german noun Antlitz, meaning face), a generative model that can synthesize multi‐modal ultra‐high‐resolution face appearance maps for novel identities. Our method solves three distinct challenges: 1) unavailability of a very large data corpus generally required for training generative models, 2) memory and computational limitations of training a GAN at ultra‐high resolutions, and 3) consistency of appearance features such as skin color, pores and wrinkles in high‐resolution textures across different modalities. We introduce dual‐style blocks, an extension to the style blocks of the StyleGAN2 architecture, which improve multi‐modal synthesis. Our patch‐based architecture is trained only on image patches obtained from a small set of face textures (<100) and yet allows us to generate seamless appearance maps of novel identities at 6k × 4k resolution. 6. Teachers' Reporting of Behavioural Problems and Cognitive-Academic Performances in Children Aged 5-7 Years

Abstract

Background: The behavioural and academic performance of young children with teachers' reported hyperactivity, conduct problems or inattention is under debate. Aim: This study investigates the associations between teachers' reported behavioural difficulties and academic and cognitive performances in two large samples of preschool and school children in France. Samples and method: Behavioural data relating to two large samples of preschool (N = 475) and first grade (N = 465) children were collected from their teachers by means of a questionnaire. A factorial analysis of the questionnaire revealed a four-factor structure ("hyperactivity," "inattention," "conduct problems" and "unsociability") that was similar in both age groups. Cognitive tests were used for each age group. Results: Teachers' reporting of "inattention" was associated with significantly lower performances in all tests in both the preschool and first grade samples. "Hyperactivity" or "conduct problems" were not consistently associated with the test results, when the effect of "inattention" was taken into account. Preschool "inattention," but not "hyperactivity" or "conduct/sociability problems," was related to poor performances at reading tasks in first grade. Conclusion: These findings question the pathological significance of teachers' report of "hyperactivity" in young children without associated attention problems.

7. Smooth Pursuit Eye Movements Are Associated with Phonological Awareness in Preschool Children

Abstract

Phonological awareness is strongly related to reading ability, but reports are more conflicting concerning the association of high level oculomotor skills with reading. Here, we show that phonological awareness is specifically associated with the ability to perform smooth pursuit eye movements in preschool children. Two large independent samples of preschool children (n=838 and n=732) aged 5-6.4 years, without history of neurological disorder, were examined by school medical doctors for visual and oculomotor problems. Nineteen percent of the children in the first sample and 14% in the second failed at the clinical evaluation of smooth pursuit eye movements, and 17 and 15%, respectively, presented another visual or oculomotor problem. Ten short cognitive tests were performed by the same children. Visual and oculomotor problems other than a failure on smooth pursuit were not consistently related to the cognitive tasks, with one exception, the visual recognition of letters. Children who failed at smooth pursuit obtained lower scores at a number of cognitive tasks, and especially phonological awareness tasks and copy of visually presented trajectories. Poor working memory and/or failure of anticipation during the tracking of a visual or auditory stimulus related to frontal cortex immaturity may explain these associations in preschool children.

13. Asthma prevalence and risk factors in school children: The RESPIR longitudinal study

Abstract

Objectives: To analyze the incidence of wheezing in the first six years of life; the prevalence of asthma at six years of age; and the associated risk factors, in a population from Valencia, Spain. Methods: A prospective longitudinal study was made of a cohort of 636 newborn infants, with follow-up of the clinical records and the completion of questionnaires up to the age of six years. Results: The prevalence of asthma at six years of age was 12.8%. Up until that age, 63% of the study population had experienced at least one episode of wheezing, and 35% had suffered recurrent wheezing (three or more episodes). Admission due to wheezing was associated to school asthma. The following risk factors were identified: atopic dermatitis (OR: 2.1; 95%CI: 1.2-3.5), the presence of at least one episode of wheezing in the first year (OR: 1.8; 95%CI: 1.1-2.9), prematurity (OR: 2.5; 95%Cl: 1.2-5.1), and a family history of asthma (OR: 2.2; 95%CI: 1.2-4.1). Conclusions: The prevalence of asthma at six years of age in our population is similar to that described in other longitudinal studies. An important increase is observed in the cumulative incidence of wheezing and of recurrent wheezing up to three years of age, followed by stabilization. The most relevant risk factors for developing asthma at six years were atopic dermatitis, wheezing during the first year, prematurity, and a family history of asthma. Full -term pregnancy and the minimization of respiratory infections at an early age could reduce the prevalence of asthma at six years of age in our population. (C) 2019 SEICAP. Abstract

Objective To determine the incidence and risk factors of first cardiovascular event (CVE) in patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases (CIRD). Methods Analysis of data after 2.5 years of follow-up from the prospective study CARMA project, that includes patients with CIRD [rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and psoriatic arthritis (PsA)] and matched individuals without CIRD from 67 hospitals in Spain. CVE cumulative incidence per 1000 patients was calculated after 2.5 years from the start of the project. Weibull proportional hazard model was used to calculate hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of the risk factors. Results 2595 (89.1%) patients completed the 2.5 years of follow-up visit. Cumulative incidence of CVE in patients with CIRD was 15.30 cases per 1000 patients (95% CI: 12.93-17.67), being higher in the subgroup with AS; 22.03 (95% CI: 11.01-33.04). Patients with AS (HR: 4.11; 95% CI: 1.07-15.79), those with older age (HR: 1.09; 95% CI: 1.05-1.13), systolic hypertension (HR: 1.02; 95% CI: 1.00-1.04) and long duration of the disease (HR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.03-1.12) were at higher risk of first CVE during the 2.5 years of follow-up. In contrast, female gender was a protective factor (HR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.18-1.00). Conclusion Among CIRD patients prospectively followed-up at rheumatology outpatient clinics, those with AS show higher risk of first CVE. Abstract

Objective Cardiovascular (CV) disease is one of the main causes of morbi-mortality in spondyloarthritis (SpA), partially explained by traditional CV risk factors. Information on lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], a non-conventional risk factor, in SpA is scarce. In this study we assessed the prevalence of hyperlipoproteinaemia(a) in SpA patients and analysed the possible related factors. Methods A baseline analysis was made of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients and controls included in the CARMA project (CARdiovascular in RheuMAtology), a 10-year prospective study evaluating the risk of CV events in chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases. A multivariate logistic regression model was performed using hyperlipoproteinaemia( a) (Lp(a) >50 mg/dl) as a dependent variable and adjusting for confounding factors. Results 19.2% (95% CI: 16.80-22.05) of the SpA patients [20.7% (95% CI: 16.91-24.82) of those with AS and 17.7% (95% CI: 14.15-21.75) of those with PsA] and 16.7% (95% CI: 13.23-20.86) of the controls had hyperlipoproteinaemia(a) (p=0.326). Adjusting for age and sex, SpA patients were more likely to have hyperlipoproteinaemia(a) than controls (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.00-2.04; p=0.05), especially those with AS (OR: 1.81, 95% CI: 1.18-2.77; p=0.007). In the adjusted model, apolipoprotein B in all patients, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in AS, and female sex in PsA, were associated with hyperlipoproteinaemia(a). No disease-specific factors associated with hyperlipoproteinaemia(a) were identified. Conclusion SpA patients show a moderately increased risk of hyperlipoproteinaemia(a) compared to controls, especially those with AS. Lp(a) determination may be of interest to improve the CV risk assessment in SpA patients.

Abstract

Les infections génitales à Chlamydia trachomatis(Ct) sont des infections sexuellement transmissibles fréquentes, particulièrement chez les jeunes femmes. Elles peuvent évoluer en infections génitales hautes (IGH), pouvant causer à leur tour grossesses extra-utérines (GEU) ou infertilité tubaire. Une meilleure connaissance épidémiologique de l'histoire naturelle de ces infections est nécessaire, notamment pour l’évaluation de nouvelles stratégies de dépistage. Ce travail visait le développement d'un algorithme d'identification des IGH dans l'Entrepôt de données de santé de l'Assistance publique–Hôpitaux de Paris (EDS-AP-HP), l'estimation de la fréquence de ces complications et de la part liée à une infection à Ct.

Abstract

Sex is a major factor influencing best performances and world records. Here the evolution of the difference between men and women's best performances is characterized through the analysis of 82 quantifiable events since the beginning of the Olympic era. For each event in swimming, athletics, track cycling, weightlifting and speed skating the gender gap is fitted to compare male and female records. It is also studied through the best performance of the top 10 performers in each gender for swimming and athletics. A stabilization of the gender gap in world records is observed after 1983, at a mean difference of 10.0% ± 2.94 between men and women for all events. The gender gap ranges from 5.5% (800-m freestyle, swimming) to 18.8% (long jump). The mean gap is 10.7% for running performances, 17.5% for jumps, 8.9% for swimming races, 7.0% for speed skating and 8.7% in cycling. The top ten performers' analysis reveals a similar gender gap trend with a stabilization in 1982 at 11.7%, despite the large growth in participation of women from eastern and western countries, that coincided with later- published evidence of state-institutionalized or individual doping. These results suggest that women will not run, jump, swim or ride as fast as men. Abstract

When fitting marginal models to correlated outcomes, the so-called sandwich variance is commonly used. However, this is not the case when fitting mixed models. Using two data sets, we illustrate the problems that can be encountered. We show that the differences or the ratios between the naive and sandwich standard deviations of the fixed effects estimators provide convenient means of assessing the fit of the model, as both are consistent when the covariance structure is correctly specified, but only the latter is when that structure is misspecified. When the number of statistical units is not too small, the sandwich formula correctly estimates the variance of the fixed effects estimator even if the random effects are misspecified, and it can be used in a diagnostic tool for assessing the misspecification of the random effects. A simple comparison with the naive variance is sufficient and we propose considering a ratio of the naive and sandwich standard deviation out of the [3/4; 4/3] interval as signaling a risk of erroneous inference due to a model misspecification.
