The family Erythrobacteraceae , belonging to the order Sphingomonadales , class Alphaproteobacteria , is globally distributed in various environments. Currently, this family consist of seven genera: Altererythrobacter , Croceibacterium , Croceicoccus , Erythrobacter , Erythromicrobium , Porphyrobacter and Qipengyuania . As more species are identified, the taxonomic status of the family Erythrobacteraceae should be revised at the genomic level because of its polyphyletic nature evident from 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Phylogenomic reconstruction based on 288 single-copy orthologous clusters led to the identification of three separate clades. Pairwise comparisons of average nucleotide identity, average amino acid identity (AAI), percentage of conserved protein and evolutionary distance indicated that AAI and evolutionary distance had the highest correlation. Thresholds for genera boundaries were proposed as 70 % and 0.4 for AAI and evolutionary distance, respectively. Based on the phylo-genomic and genomic similarity analysis, the three clades were classified into 16 genera, including 11 novel ones, for which the names Alteraurantiacibacter, Altericroceibacterium, Alteriqipengyuania, Alteripontixanthobacter, Aurantiacibacter, Paraurantiacibacter, Parerythrobacter, Parapontixanthobacter, Pelagerythrobacter, Tsuneonella and Pontixanthobacter are proposed. We reclassified all species of Erythromicrobium and Porphyrobacter as species of Erythrobacter . This study is the first genomic-based study of the family Erythrobacteraceae , and will contribute to further insights into the evolution of this family.

A Gram-negative, aerobic, coccoid bacterium, strain O30(T), was isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample collected from the west Pacific. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that this strain is affiliated with the family Erythrobacteraceae in the class Alphaproteobacteria, and is closely related to the members of the genera Erythromicrobium (96.6 %), Porphyrobacter (95.5-96.3 %), Altererythrobacter (94.1-96.2 %) and Erythrobacter (94.2-96.2 %). Phylogenetic analysis including all described species of the family Erythrobacteraceae revealed that the isolate forms a clade in the cluster of the genus Altererythrobacter. Strain O30(T) was found to grow at 4-40 °C, pH 6.0-10.0 and in the presence of 0.5-7.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealed ubiquinones Q-8, Q-9 and Q-10 as the predominant respiratory quinones, summed feature 8 (C18:1 ω7c and/or C18:1 ω6c), C17:1 ω6c and C16:0 as major fatty acids, and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and sphingoglycolipid as the major polar lipids. The DNA G + C content was determined to be 56.9 mol %. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data presented in this study, strain O30(T) represents a novel species within the genus Altererythrobacter, for which the name Altererythrobacter aurantiacus sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is O30(T) (= CGMCC 1.12762(T) = JCM 19853(T) = LMG 28110(T) = MCCC 1A09962(T)).

A taxonomic study was carried out on strain H32(T), which was isolated from a crude-oil-degrading consortium enriched from deep seawater of the Indian Ocean. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain H32(T) showed highest similarity to that of Altererythrobacter luteolus SW-109(T) (96.7 %); lower similarities were observed with other members of the genus Altererythrobacter (94.7-95.7 %) and with members of the genera Erythrobacter (94.5-96.3 %), Erythromicrobium (94.9 %) and Porphyrobacter (94.3-95.3 %). Phylogenetic analyses of all members of the family Erythrobacteraceae and several members of the family Sphingomonadaceae revealed that strain H32(T) formed a clade within the genus Altererythrobacter. The dominant fatty acids were C(16 : 0) (6.7 %), C(18 : 1)omega7c (44.3 %) and 11-methyl C(18 : 1)omega7c (25.4 %). The major respiratory quinone was ubiquinone 10. The DNA G+C content was 66.5 mol%. Strain H32(T) did not contain bacteriochlorophyll a. These characteristics are in good agreement with those of members of the genus Altererythrobacter. Therefore, according to its morphology, physiology, fatty acid composition and 16S rRNA gene sequence data, strain H32(T) belongs to the genus Altererythrobacter, but can be readily distinguished from known Altererythrobacter species. It is therefore proposed that strain H32(T) represents a novel species, Altererythrobacter marinus sp. nov., with H32(T) (=CCTCC AB 208229(T) =LMG 24629(T) =MCCC 1A01070(T)) as the type strain.

A Gram-negative, aerobic, neutrophilic, coccoid bacterium, strain E4A9T, was isolated from a deep-sea sediment sample collected from the East Pacific polymetallic nodule region. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that the isolate was related to the type strain of Altererythrobacter epoxidivorans (96.0% sequence similarity). Lower 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities were observed with other members of the genera Altererythrobacter (94.7%), Erythrobacter (94.0-95.4%), Erythromicrobium (94.8%) and Porphyrobacter (94.6-95.1%) of the family Erythrobacteraceae. Phylogenetic analysis including all described species of the family Erythrobacteraceae and several members of the family Sphingomonadaceae revealed that the isolate formed a distinct phylogenetic lineage with the family Erythrobacteraceae. Chemotaxonomic analysis revealed ubiquinone-10 as the predominant respiratory quinone, anteiso-C15:0, iso-C14:0 and iso-C15:0 as major fatty acids, and phosphatidylglycerol as the major polar lipid. The DNA G+C content was 71.5 mol%. The isolate contained carotenoids, but no bacteriochlorophyll a. On the basis of phenotypic and genotypic data presented in this study, strain E4A9T represents a novel species in a new genus in the family Erythrobacteraceae for which the name Croceicoccus marinus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed; the type strain is E4A9T (=CGMCC 1.6776T=JCM 14846T).

Three strains of " Agrobacterium sanguineum", an aerobic marine bacterial species described previously, were re-characterized from phylogenetic and taxonomic viewpoints. 16S rDNA sequence comparisons showed that the " A. sanguineum" strains belong to the alpha-4 subgroup of alpha-Proteobacteria, with members of the genera Erythromicrobium and Porphyrobacter as their closest relatives. DNA-DNA hybridization studies indicated that the " A. sanguineum" strains were distinguishable from any previously known species of these genera. Bacteriochlorophyll a, monosaccharide-type glycosphingolipids, 2-OH fatty acids of C14:0, C15:0, C16:0, and C16:1, and ubiquinone-10 were detected in the " A. sanguineum" strains. The G+C of the DNA was 63.8-64.0 mol%. Two of the " A. sanguineum" strains, IAM 12620 (=ATCC 25659) and ATCC 25661, were able to grow with biphenyl and dibenzofuran as sole carbon source in the presence of 0.05% yeast extract. The medium in these cultures turned yellowish-orange at the exponential phase of growth due to the release of soluble chromogenic metabolites. The remaining " A. sanguineum" strain, ATCC 25660, and all test strains of Erythromicrobium and Porphyrobacter neither grew nor produced yellow-orange pigment with biphenyl or dibenzofuran. In PCR experiments, bphA1 gene, coding for the large subunit protein of biphenyl dioxygenase, was detected in " A. sanguineum" IAM 12620 and ATCC 25661. Based on these results, we propose classifying " A. sanguineum" IAM 12620 and ATCC 25661 as a new species of the genus Porphyrobacter with the name Porphyrobacter sanguineus sp. nov.

Based on the results of phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rDNA sequences and the presence of N-2'-hydroxymyristoyl dihydrosphingosine 1-glucuronic acid (SGL-1) and 2-hydroxymyristic acid (non-hydroxymyristic acid in Zymomonas) in cellular lipids, a new family, Sphingomonadaceae, for Group 4 of the alpha-subclass of the class Proteobacteria is herein proposed and a description of the family is given. The family consists of six genera, Sphingomonas, Erythrobacter, Erythromicrobium, Porphyrobacter, Sandaracinobacter and Zymomonas. Thus, all the validly published and currently known genera in Group 4 of the alpha-subclass of Proteobacteria belong to Sphingomonadaceae fam. nov. Among them, type strains of two species, Porphyrobacter and Erythrobacter, Sandaracinobacter sibiricus and Sphingomonas ursincola, respectively, are facultatively photosynthetic due to bacteriochlorophyll (Bchl)-a. The type strains of two subspecies of Zymomonas mobilis are facultative anaerobes. The presence of SGL-1 together with the results of a phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rDNA sequences recommends a new criteria by which to define the new family Sphingomonadaceae. The type genus is Sphingomonas Yabuuchi et al. 1990.

In this work, we have examined, using Fourier-transform Raman (FT-R) spectroscopy, the bacteriochlorophyll a (BChl a) binding sites in light-harvesting (LH) antennae from different species of the Proteobacteria that exhibit unusal absorption properties. While the LH1 complexes from Erythromicrobium (E.) ramosum (RC-B871) and Rhodospirillum centenum (B875) present classic FT-R spectra in the carbonyl high-frequency region, we show that in the blue-shifted LH1 complex, absorbing at 856 nm, from Roseococcus thiosulfatophilus, as well as in the B798-832 LH2 from E. ramosum, or in the B830 complex from the obligate phototrophic bacterium Chromatium purpuratum, some H-bonds between the acetyl carbonyl of the BChl a and the surrounding protein are missing. The molecular mechanisms responsible for the unusual absorption of these complexes are thus similar to those responsible for tuning of the absorption of the LH2 complexes between 850 and 820 nm. Furthermore, our results suggest that the binding pocket of the monomeric BChl in the LH2 from E. ramosum is different from that of Rps. acidphila or Rb. sphaeroides. The FT-R spectra of Chromatium purpuratum indicate that, in contrast with every LH2 complex previously studied by FT-R spectroscopy, no free-from-interaction keto groupings exist in this complex.

The photosynthetic apparatus and the electron carriers of seven species of five different genera of obligate aerobic phototrophic bacteria have been characterized by biochemical and biophysical techniques. A tetrahemic reaction center (RC) bound cytochrome (cyt) was found in Erythromonas (Em.) ursincola, Sandaracinobacter (S.) sibiricus and Roseococcus (R.) thiosulfatophilus, but not in Erythromicrobium (E.) ezovicum, Erythromicrobium ramosum, Erythromicrobium hydrolyticum and Erythrobacter (Eb.) litoralis. In none of the studied species, photochemical activity was observed under anaerobic conditions. Under aerobic conditions, the photoinduced cyclic electron transfer involves a soluble c-type cyt for the seven species. The cyt content of soluble and membrane fractions is highly dependent upon the species. The Erythromicrobium species (E. ezovicum, E. ramosum and E. hydrolyticum) contains a major soluble cyt while the other species possess several soluble cyts, up to four in the case of Eb. litoralis. These cyts have been characterized in terms of midpoint potential and apparent molecular mass. The presence of cyt bc1 complexes has been clearly detected in Eb. litoralis, E. hydrolyticum, E. ezovicum and E. ramosum. These last three species also contain a high midpoint potential (350 mV) membrane-bound cyt c of unknown function.

The impact of illumination on specific growth rate, biomass formation, and synthesis of photopigment was studied in Erythromicrobium hydrolyticum, an obligately aerobic heterotrophic bacterium having the ability to synthesize bacteriochlorophyll a. In dark-grown continuous cultures the concentration of protein increased with increasing dilution rate, the concentration of bacteriochlorophyll a showed the opposite effect. At a dilution rate of 0.08 h-1 (68% of mu(max) in the dark) and S(R-acetate) Of 11.8 mM. the concentration of BChla of illuminated cultures in steady-state was 11-22 nM, compared to 230 241 nM in cultures incubated in darkness. No significant differences were observed in the concentration of protein. A shift from darkness to light conditions resulted in increased specific growth rates resulting in increased biomass formation, thus showing that light enhances growth by serving as an additional energy source. This phenomenon, however, was temporary because bacteriochlorophyll synthesis is inhibited by light. In contrast to incubation in continuous light or dark, incubation under light/dark regimen resulted in permanently enhanced biomass formation. In the dark periods, bacteriochlorophyll was synthesized at elevated rates (compared to constant darkness), thus compensating the inhibitory effect of light in the preceding period. It thus appears that the organism is well-adapted to life in environments with alternating light/dark conditions. The ecological relevance of the observations is discussed.

Four Gram-negative strains (ML4(T), ML19, ML31, ML32) of nonmotile, appendaged, budding bacteria were isolated from the meromictic Mahoney Lake in British Columbia, Canada. The strains were red to brown-red in color and produced bacteriochlorophyll a incorporated into photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes. Phylogenetic analysis has placed these strains within the class Alphaproteobacteria, with the closest relatives being members of the genera Erythrobacter, Porphyrobacter, and Erythromicrobium. Morphological features warrant their inclusion within the genus Porphyrobacter and these strains can be readily distinguished from other species of this genus on the basis of a mesophilic temperature range, a broad pH range, and tolerance to extremely high NaCl and Na(2)SO(4) concentrations, in keeping with the environment from which they were isolated, a Na(2)SO(4)-dominated meromictic lake. These isolates utilize a variety of organic substrates for aerobic chemoheterotrophic growth and do not grow under anaerobic conditions, in either the presence or the absence of light. All strains require vitamin B(12), and strains ML4(T) and ML19 require biotin. The DNA G + C contents ranged from 62.2 to 64.9 mol%. Phenotypic and phyletic data support the classification of strains ML4(T), ML19, ML31, and ML32 as a novel Porphyrobacter species for which the name Porphyrobacter meromictius sp. nov. is proposed.

Two strains of a novel aerobic, bacteriochlorophyll a-containing species of the alpha-4 subclass of the Proteobacteria were isolated from the hot spring at Alcafache in central Portugal. 16S rRNA gene sequence-based phylogenetic analyses showed the two novel isolates to be phylogenetically related to members of the genera Erythrobacter, Erythromicrobium and Porphyrobacter. The strains produce reddish-orange-pigmented colonies, have an optimum growth temperature of about 50 degrees C and could be distinguished from the species Porphyrobacter tepidarius, which also has a high growth temperature, primarily on the basis of the fatty acid composition. The novel species does not grow anaerobically in the presence or absence of a light source. The strains of the novel species utilize several single carbon sources for growth, most of which are also used by P. tepidarius. The species status of strains ALC-2T and ALC-3 was confirmed by low reassociation values of the DNA with species of the genera Erythrobacter, Erythromicrobium and Porphyrobacter. Phenotypic characteristics and 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses also show that strains ALC-2T (=DSM 12079T =ATCC BAA-386T) and ALC-3 (=DSM 12080) represent a novel species, for which the name Porphyrobacter cryptus sp. nov. is proposed.

Two facultatively oligotrophic, intensely yellow-pigmented bacterial strains, RE35F/1T and RE10F/45, have been previously isolated from the western Mediterranean Sea (Bay of Calvi, Corsica, France) by 0.2 microm membrane filtration. The organisms were gram-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped and non-motile. Their respiratory lipoquinone profiles consisted exclusively of ubiquinone-10 (Q-10) and the G+C contents of their DNAs were 62.0 and 62.4 mol%, respectively. Among the cellular fatty acids, octadecenoic acid (18:1omega7c) was the major component. Both isolates also contained hydroxy fatty acids (14:0 2-OH, 18:1 2-OH and 16:0 iso 3-OH) and branched fatty acids (15:0 anteiso, 16:0 anteiso and 17:0 anteiso). Polar lipid fingerprints were characterized by the presence of a sphingoglycolipid. Comparative analyses of their 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that both isolates were phylogenetically closely related (sequence similarity of 99.9%) and formed a coherent cluster with aerobic bacteriochlorophyll a-containing species of the Erythrobacter/Porphyrobacter/Erythromicrobium cluster within the family Sphingomonadaceae. The closest relative was Erythrobacter litoralis DSM 8509T (97.4 and 97.5% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between this strain and RE35F/1T and RE10F/45, respectively). DNA-DNA reassociation studies confirmed that strains RE35F/1T and RE10F/45 represent a single species (79.6% DNA homology), but also demonstrated that they do not belong to the species Erythrobacter litoralis (25.2 and 34.2% DNA homology, respectively). Notably, both RE35F/1T and RE10F/45 lacked bacteriochlorophyll a. Based upon phenotypic and molecular evidence, a novel species of the genus Erythrobacter, Erythrobacter citreus sp. nov., is proposed. Strain RE35F/1T (= CIP 107092T = DSM 14432T) is the type strain.

SUMMARYThe aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria are a relatively recently discovered bacterial group. Although taxonomically and phylogenetically heterogeneous, these bacteria share the following distinguishing features: the presence of bacteriochlorophyll a incorporated into reaction center and light-harvesting complexes, low levels of the photosynthetic unit in cells, an abundance of carotenoids, a strong inhibition by light of bacteriochlorophyll synthesis, and the inability to grow photosynthetically under anaerobic conditions. Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria are classified in two marine (Erythrobacter and Roseobacter) and six freshwater (Acidiphilium, Erythromicrobium, Erythromonas, Porphyrobacter, Roseococcus, and Sandaracinobacter) genera, which phylogenetically belong to the α-1, α-3, and α-4 subclasses of the class Proteobacteria. Despite this phylogenetic information, the evolution and ancestry of their photosynthetic properties are unclear. We discuss several current proposals for the evolutionary origin of aerobic phototrophic bacteria. The closest phylogenetic relatives of aerobic phototrophic bacteria include facultatively anaerobic purple nonsulfur phototrophic bacteria. Since these two bacterial groups share many properties, yet have significant differences, we compare and contrast their physiology, with an emphasis on morphology and photosynthetic and other metabolic processes.

The results of investigations on the morphology, physiology, pigment composition, light-harvesting antenna and reaction center organization, and electron carriers of five Erythromicrobium representatives, and on phylogenetic relations among them, are summarized. On the basis of clear phenotypic differences and distinct phylogenetic positions shown by 16S ribosomal DNA analysis, the tentative species "Erythromicrobium sibiricum" and "Erythromicrobium ursincola" are formally described as the type species of two new genera: Sandaracinobacter sibiricus gen. nov., sp. nov., and Erythromonas ursincola gen. nov., sp. nov., respectively. The genus Erythromicrobium is at present composed of the type species, E. ramosum, and two species, "E. hydrolyticum" and "E. ezovicum," whose nomenclature is yet to be validated. All species studied group within the alpha-4 subclass of Proteobacteria.

A new thermophilic bacterium, strain OT3T (T = type strain), was isolated from a brackish hot spring. Strain OT3T is an obligate aerobe that synthesizes bacteriochlorophyll a and has a photosynthetic apparatus. This isolate is a thermophilic bacterium with an optimal growth temperature of 40 to 48 degrees C. The cells are nonmotile, ovoid to short rods. An analysis of 16S rRNA sequences revealed that the new strain forms a coherent cluster with members of the alpha-4 group of the alpha subclass of the Proteobacteria, which contains the genera Erythrobacter, Erythromicrobium, and Porphyrobacter. The closest relative is Porphyrobacter neustonensis, with a 16S rRNA sequence similarity of 96.8%. The in vivo absorption spectrum has maxima at 460, 494, 596, 800, and 870 nm. The main carotenoids are OH-beta-carotene sulfate derivatives, nostoxanthin, and bacteriorubixanthinal. Growth occurs with glucose, acetate, glutamate, butyrate, Casamino Acids, and yeast extract as sole energy sources. The pigment composition and nutritional profile of the new isolate are similar to the pigment composition and nutritional profile of P. neustonensis. Although there are marked differences in cell morphology between the new isolate and the budding bacterium P. neustonensis, the results of phenotypic and genetic comparisons suggest that the new isolate is closely related to P. neustonensis. Consequently, we assign the new isolate to the genus Porphyrobacter and propose the name Porphyrobacter tepidarius sp. nov. for it; the type strain of P. tepidarius is strain OT3 (= DSM 10595).

Seven species of obligately aerobic photosynthetic bacteria of the genera Erythromicrobium, Erythrobacter, and Roseococcus demonstrated high-level resistance to tellurite and accumulation of metallic tellurium crystals. High-level resistance without tellurite reduction was observed for Roseococcus thiosulfatophilus and Erythromicrobium ezovicum grown with certain organic carbon sources, implying that tellurite reduction is not essential to confer tellurite resistance.

We analyzed the 16S ribosomal DNAs of three obligately aerobic, bacteriochlorophyll a-containing bacteria, "Roseococcus thiosulfatophilus," "Erythromicrobium ramosum," and new isolate T4T (T = type strain), which was obtained from a marine cyanobacterial mat. "Roseococcus thiosulfatophilus" is a member of the alpha-1 subclass of the Proteobacteria and is moderately related to Rhodopila globiformis, Thiobacillus acidophilus, and Acidiphilium cryptum (level of sequence similarity, 90%). "Erythromicrobium ramosum" and isolate T4T are closely related to Erythrobacter longus and Porphyrobacter neustonensis (level of sequence similarity, 95%). These organisms are members of the alpha-4 subclass of the Proteobacteria. Strain T4T is a motile, red or orange bacterium. The major carotenoids are bacteriorubixanthinal and erythroxanthin sulfate. In vivo measurements revealed bacteriochlorophyll absorption maxima at 377, 590, 800, and 868 nm. Strain T4T grows in the presence of 5 to 96/1000 salinity and uses glucose, fructose, acetate, pyruvate, glutamate, succinate, and lactate as substrates. On the basis of its distinct phylogenetic position and phenotypic characteristics which are different from those of Erythrobacter longus, we propose that strain T4T should be placed in a new species of the genus Erythrobacter, Erythrobacter litoralis. The descriptions of "Roseococcus thiosulfatophilus" and "Erythromicrobium ramosum" are emended.

Four strains of orange- or red-pigmented bacteria isolated from freshwater surfaces were shown to synthesize bacteriochlorophyll under aerobic conditions. These strains shared unusual morphological features, such as acellular stalks, crateriformlike structures, and buds, with bacteria in the order Planctomycetales. However, comparisons of 16S rRNA sequences showed them to be members of the alpha-4 subdivision of the class Proteobacteria and most closely related to the marine aerobic bacteriochlorophyll-synthesizing bacterium Erythrobacter longus. They also differ from members of the Planctomycetales phenotypically in their synthesis of bacteriochlorophyll and possession of a peptidoglycan cell wall. They can be distinguished from E. longus on the basis of their 16S rRNA sequence, the G+C content of their DNA, cellular fatty acid composition, and carbon substrate spectrum. A new genus, Porphyrobacter, with a single species, P. neustonensis gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed for these strains. The type strain is ACM 2844.

A shift from darkness to light conditions resulted in increased specific growth rates resulting in increased biomass formation, thus showing that light enhances growth by serving as an additional energy source. This phenomenon, however, was temporary because bacteriochlorophyll synthesis is inhibited by light. In contrast to incubation in continuous light or dark, incubation under light/dark regimen resulted in permanently enhanced biomass formation. In the dark periods, bacteriochlorophyll was synthesized at elevated rates (compared to constant darkness), thus compensating the inhibitory effect of light in the preceding period. It thus appears that the organism is well-adapted to life in environments with alternating light/dark conditions. The ecological relevance of the observations is discussed.

Four orange-pigmented and seven pink-pigmented strains of bacteria which contained bacteriochlorophyll a were isolated from high-tidal seaweeds, such as Enteromorpha linza (L.) J. Ag. and Porphyra sp. All of the isolates were gram negative. The orange-pigmented bacteria were rods with parallel sides and rounded ends, and the pink-pigmented bacteria were ovoids and short rods. All were motile by means of subpolar flagella. None of the strains produced growth anaerobically in the light. No growth occurred with an atmosphere containing H2 and CO2. All of these bacteria grew aerobically and utilized glucose, pyruvate, acetate, butyrate, and glutamate as sole organic carbon sources. The best growth occurred on complex media formulated for heterotrophic marine bacteria. Biotin was required. Oxidase and catalase were present. Small amounts of acid were produced from a wide range of carbohydrates under microaerobic conditions. Gelatin was hydrolyzed. The strains which we investigated fell into the following three clusters: cluster A, all of the orange strains; cluster B, three pink strains; and cluster C, four pink strains. The strains of clusters B and C required thiamine and nicotinic acid and were susceptible to streptomycin. Tween 80 was hydrolyzed and phosphatase activity was produced by the strains of clusters A and B. Pantothenate was required only by the strains of cluster C. The guanine-plus-cytosine contents of the deoxyribonucleic acids of these organisms ranged from 60 to 64 mol%. These organisms are recognized here as members of a new genus, Erythrobacter. Although these organisms did not grow phototrophically, the presence of bacteriochlorophyll a indicated that they are most closely related to the Rhodospirillaceae. The type species is Erythrobacter longus, the type strain of which is an orange strain, OCh101 (= IFO 14126).
