9. Hydrogen Evolution on Mechanically Synthesized Particles of Tungsten- and Iron-Based Carbides: WC, Fe3C, Fe3W3C, and Fe6W6C.

Abstract

The electrocatalytic activity of a number of mechanically activated/mechanically alloyed carbide phases of iron and tungsten and Fe3W3C and Fe6W6C bimetallic carbides in the evolution of hydrogen has been studied. Electrocatalysts have been prepared by compacting carbide particles with polyaniline as a conducting polymer. The highest activity is exhibited by Fe3C and WC nanocrystalline particles. Metallic phases in the composition of the particles slow down the rate of hydrogen evolution. Subsequent annealing of these particles transforms metallic phases to bimetallic carbides and accelerates the hydrogen evolution. The activity of the phases of Fe3W3C and Fe6W6C bimetallic carbides in the hydrogen evolution is fairly high, but they are inferior to the Fe3C and WC nanocrystalline particles. 11. Synthesis of Niobium η-Carbide Nb3(Fe,Al)3C by Mechanical Alloying in a Liquid Organic Medium.

Abstract

The η-carbide Nb3(Fe,Al)3C phase was synthesized for the first time by mechanical alloying of Nb, Al, and Fe in petroleum ether followed by annealing. The synthesis of carbide occurs due to carbon accumulated from the grinding medium. If mechanical alloying is performed using steel vials and balls, the composites based on η-carbide can be obtained without additional introduction of iron; contaminant iron is involved in the formation of Nb3(Fe,Al)3C. 15. SPS of ”Titanium Carbide/Carbohydride – Copper” Composites

Abstract

The TiC-copper and Ti2CH0.6-TiC-intermetallic Cu-Ti composites were produced using high-energy wet ball milling of Ti-Cu-graphite and Ti-Cu-surfactant powders, respectively, followed by spark plasma sintering at 900∘С. The composites were shown to be of 91-92% in density as compared with the theoretical value, microhardness of 6-7 GPa, and elasticity modulus of 134-140 GPa. The tribological properties of the composites were shown to depend on the phase composition. Surfactant addition resulted in higher fretting resistance against tempered steel (С-1%, Сr-1.5%) due to the formation of hexagonal titanium carbohydride and higher abrasive wear resistance.

Abstract

Copper-chromium carbide composites containing a carbide phase of 20-30 vol% were obtained with the use of solid- and liquid-phase mechanosyntheses, followed by magnetic pulse compaction (MPC) and spark plasma sintering. The morphology, structural-phase composition, density, hardness and electrical conductivity of the composites were investigated. The structure of composites obtained by MPC represents regions of copper matrix hardened by superfine carbide precipitates surrounded by a layer of chromium carbide. In the composites obtained by spark plasma sintering, the copper matrix hardened by superfine carbide precipitates was divided into areas surrounded by a copper-chromium layer. A composite obtained by the MPC of the powders synthesized using solid-phase mechanosynthesis (MS) (copper, chromium and graphite) had the highest values ofVickers microhardness (4.6GPa) and Rockwell hardness (HRA 69). The best value of electrical conductivity (36% IACS) was achieved using liquid-phase MS (copper, chromium and xylene) and spark plasma sintering. Liquid-phase MS is the only way to synthesize the powder with a small amount of the carbide phase and without contamination. © 2017 Indian Academy of Sciences.
