Abstract

Human-induced salinization increasingly threatens inland waters; yet we know little about the multifaceted response of lake communities to salt contamination. By conducting a coordinated mesocosm experiment of lake salinization across 16 sites in North America and Europe, we quantified the response of zooplankton abundance and (taxonomic and functional) community structure to a broad gradient of environmentally relevant chloride concentrations, ranging from 4 to ca. 1400 mg Cl− L−1. We found that crustaceans were distinctly more sensitive to elevated chloride than rotifers; yet, rotifers did not show compensatory abundance increases in response to crustacean declines. For crustaceans, our among-site comparisons indicate: (1) highly consistent decreases in abundance and taxon richness with salinity; (2) widespread chloride sensitivity across major taxonomic groups (Cladocera, Cyclopoida, and Calanoida); and (3) weaker loss of functional than taxonomic diversity. Overall, our study demonstrates that aggregate properties of zooplankton communities can be adversely affected at chloride concentrations relevant to anthropogenic salinization in lakes.

Abstract

Human-induced salinization caused by the use of road deicing salts, agricultural practices, mining operations, and climate change is a major threat to the biodiversity and functioning of freshwater ecosystems. Yet, it is unclear if freshwater ecosystems are protected from salinization by current water quality guidelines. Leveraging an experimental network of land-based and in-lake mesocosms across North America and Europe, we tested how salinization-indicated as elevated chloride (Cl-) concentration-will affect lake food webs and if two of the lowest Cl- thresholds found globally are sufficient to protect these food webs. Our results indicated that salinization will cause substantial zooplankton mortality at the lowest Cl- thresholds established in Canada (120 mg Cl-/L) and the United States (230 mg Cl-/L) and throughout Europe where Cl- thresholds are generally higher. For instance, at 73% of our study sites, Cl- concentrations that caused a ≥50% reduction in cladoceran abundance were at or below Cl- thresholds in Canada, in the United States, and throughout Europe. Similar trends occurred for copepod and rotifer zooplankton. The loss of zooplankton triggered a cascading effect causing an increase in phytoplankton biomass at 47% of study sites. Such changes in lake food webs could alter nutrient cycling and water clarity and trigger declines in fish production. Current Cl- thresholds across North America and Europe clearly do not adequately protect lake food webs. Water quality guidelines should be developed where they do not exist, and there is an urgent need to reassess existing guidelines to protect lake ecosystems from human-induced salinization.

Abstract

Temporary rivers (TRs) are stream ecosystems in which the effects of anthropogenic disturbances are mixed with the effects of the natural disturbance imposed by flow intermittence. Despite the advances in TRs research, many gaps persist that limit the development of appropriate methodologies for the assessment of the ecological status. In this review, we identify the current challenges for the assessment of the ecological status of TRs and analyze the existing opportunities to address these challenges. These challenges focus on: the differentiation between natural and hydrologically impacted TRs, the differentiation between natural and anthropogenic disturbances, the development of biological indices for disconnected pools and dry riverbeds, the adaptation of hydrogeomorphological indices, and the application of the metacommunity theory in TRs. The opportunities are related to: the use of molecular tools, the existence of alternative indices to the traditional ones, the availability of data to be able to do modeling, and the social implication in the assessment of the hydrological and ecological status. The review focuses mainly on the scientific and management knowledge accumulated since the implementation of the Water Framework Directive in Spain but gathers experiences from TRs around the world to guide conservation and management actions in these unique ecosystems highly threatened by global change.

Abstract

The salinization of freshwaters is a global threat to aquatic biodiversity. We quantified variation in chloride (Cl−) tolerance of 19 freshwater zooplankton species in four countries to answer three questions: (1) How much variation in Cl− tolerance is present among populations? (2) What factors predict intraspecific variation in Cl− tolerance? (3) Must we account for intraspecific variation to accurately predict community Cl− tolerance? We conducted field mesocosm experiments at 16 sites and compiled acute LC50s from published laboratory studies. We found high variation in LC50s for Cl− tolerance in multiple species, which, in the experiment, was only explained by zooplankton community composition. Variation in species-LC50 was high enough that at 45% of lakes, community response was not predictable based on species tolerances measured at other sites. This suggests that water quality guidelines should be based on multiple populations and communities to account for large intraspecific variation in Cl− tolerance.

Abstract

Food webs represent trophic interactions within ecosystems. Matching traits of consumers and resources helps infer trophic interactions and food-web properties. Environmental (e)DNA, commonly used for detecting species occurrences, is rarely used in trait-matching studies because abundance estimates and descriptions of relevant traits are generally missing. We synthesized recent literature on inferences of trophic interactions with eDNA and trait matching to identify challenges and opportunities for coupled eDNA–trait recording schemes. Our case study shows how coupling eDNA and trait data collection improves the ability to characterize greater numbers of food webs across multiple scales ranging from spatiotemporal to trait variation. Future-proofing eDNA data sets requires the collection of new traits or the compilation of existing trait data at spatiotemporal scales that are relevant to detect current and future changes in food webs and ecosystems.

Abstract

There are different studies that aim to enhance the production of nisin by Lactococcus lactissince its chemical synthesis is not possible. In this study, glutathione (GSH) and pyruvate, which are known to reduce the oxidative stress of cells, have been shown to trigger the production of nisin at both transcriptional and translational levels in L. lactiscells grown under aerobic condition. Presence of GSH and pyruvate caused more nisin yield than the heme-supplemented medium. Moreover, the expression of genes that encode stress-related enzymes were apparently upregulated in the presence of GSH and pyruvate. It can be concluded that GSH and pyruvate contribute to the defense system of L. lactiscells and so that higher biomass was obtained which in turn enhance nisin production. Antioxidant effect of GSH and pyruvate was known; however, their stimulating effect on nisin production was shown for the first time in this study.

Abstract

Human-induced salinization caused by the use of road deicing salts, agricultural practices, mining operations, and climate change is a major threat to the biodiversity and functioning of freshwater ecosystems. Yet, it is unclear if freshwater ecosystems are protected from salinization by current water quality guidelines. Leveraging an experimental network of land-based and in-lake mesocosms across North America and Europe, we tested how salinization—indicated as elevated chloride (Cl2) concentration—will affect lake food webs and if two of the lowest Cl2 thresholds found globally are sufficient to protect these food webs. Our results indicated that salinization will cause substantial zooplankton mortality at the lowest Cl2 thresholds established in Canada (120 mg Cl2/L) and the United States (230 mg Cl2/L) and throughout Europe where Cl2 thresholds are generally higher. For instance, at 73% of our study sites, Cl2 concentrations that caused a ≥50% reduction in cladoceran abundance were at or below Cl2 thresholds in Canada, in the United States, and throughout Europe. Similar trends occurred for copepod and rotifer zooplankton. The loss of zooplankton triggered a cascading effect causing an increase in phytoplankton biomass at 47% of study sites. Such changes in lake food webs could alter nutrient cycling and water clarity and trigger declines in fish production. Current Cl2 thresholds across North America and Europe clearly do not adequately protect lake food webs. Water quality guidelines should be developed where they do not exist, and there is an urgent need to reassess existing guidelines to protect lake ecosystems from human-induced salinization.

Abstract

Freshwater ecosystems are becoming saltier due to human activities. The effects of increased salinity can lead to cascading trophic interactions, affecting ecosystem functioning and energy transfer, through changes in community and size structure. These effects can be modulated by other environmental factors, such as nutrients. For example, communities developed under eutrophic conditions could be less sensitive to salinization due to cross-tolerance mechanisms. In this study, we used a mesocosm approach to assess the effects of a salinization gradient on the zooplankton community composition and size structure under eutrophic conditions and the cascading effects on algal communities. Our results showed that zooplankton biomass, size diversity and mean body size decreased with increased chloride concentration induced by salt addition. This change in the zooplankton community did not have cascading effects on phytoplankton. The phytoplankton biomass decreased after the chloride concentration threshold of 500 mg L-1 was reached, most likely due to direct toxic effects on the osmotic regulation and nutrient uptake processes of certain algae rather than as a response to community turnover or top-down control. Our study can help to put in place mitigation strategies for salinization and eutrophication, which often co-occur in freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract

Plastic debris is widespread in freshwater ecosystems, but a rigorous assessment of its global distribution has been hindered by a lack of comprehensive and comparable data. We performed the first standardized global survey of lakes to assess the quantity and type of plastics (>250μm). We included 38 lakes located in 23 different countries distributed across five continents, spanning different environmental gradients and varying levels of anthropogenic stress. All samples were collected by horizontal trawling of a plankton net and subsequently treated with hydrogen peroxide. We identified 9425 plastic particles, which were classified based on shape, color, and size. Polymer identification was carried out using Raman micro-spectroscopy. Our results showed that the concentration of plastics spanned four orders of magnitude (10-3-101 particles/m3). Fibers (49%) and fragments (41%) were the most frequently detected particles, suggesting a secondary origin of plastic contamination. The most commonly identified polymers were polyester (30%), polypropylene (20%), and polyethylene (16%), which are widely used in short life-cycle products and account for the majority of global plastic production. Further, we found that urban-related attributes of lakes/watersheds influenced the occurrence and type of plastics in lentic systems and larger and deeper lakes with higher retention times are accumulating plastic debris at higher concentrations. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract

Yağış-akış modelleri kapsamında ele alınan modeller içerisinden kavramsal modeller havza dinamiğini atanan parametreler yardımıyla benzeştirmeye çalışırken, kapalı kutu modelleri ise fiziksel süreci dikkate almadan veri işleme esaslı uygulanmaktadır. Her iki yöntemin de birbirine göre avantajlı ve dezavantajlı yönleri bulunmaktadır. Örneğin kavramsal modellerin bazı parametreleri doğrusal tanımlandıklarında simülasyonlarda yanlılıklar gözlenebilmektedir. Diğer yandan, kapalı kutu modelleri tutarlı bir simülasyon için gecikmeli yağış değerlerine ihtiyaç duymaktadır. Bu nedenle çalışmada her iki yaklaşımın iyi yönlerini birleştiren hibrit bir model yapısının ortaya konması amaçlanmıştır. Bu kapsamda, dinamik su bütçesi adı verilen kavramsal bir yağış-akış modelinin doğrusal davranış gösteren yeraltısuyu depolama elemanı yerine destek vektör makinesi eklenerek beş parametreli hibrit bir model oluşturulmuştur. Destek vektör makinesi ilavesi ile doğrusal olmayan haritalama yetisi kazanan model Balıkesir’in İkizcetepeler Baraj Havzası’nda uygulanmıştır. Hibrit modelin kavramsal modele kıyasla kalibrasyon ve validasyon dönemlerinde sırasıyla %21 ve %14 daha düşük hata performansı vermesi istatistiksel açıdan anlamlı bulunmuştur., Among the various rainfall-runoff models, conceptual ones can simulate the basin dynamics by means of assigned parameters, while black-box models are applied as data-driven techniques which take no account of the physical process. Both types involve some advantages and shortcomings relative to each other. For instance, as some parameters assigned in conceptual ones are linear, the runoff simulations can be biased. Besides, black-box models generally require antecedent precipitation data to get a robust simulation. Therefore, in the study, it is intended to propose a hybrid model structure integrating the prominent aspects of both approaches. In this concept, the linear groundwater storage of the dynamic water budget model, one of the conceptual types, was eliminated and a support vector regression was included instead, and thus, a hybrid model with five parameters was built. The model, which achieved nonlinear mapping capability with the inclusion of support vector regression, was implemented for Ikizcetepeler Dam located at Balikesir. It was found statistically significant that hybrid model provided relatively lower error performance as 21% and 14% in calibration and validation periods, respectively, when it was compared to that of the conceptual one.

Balıkesir Üniversitesi, Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü, İnşaat Mühendisliği Ana Bilim Dalı, Yağış-akış modellemesinde en yaygın hibridizasyon uygulaması, makine öğrenimi yaklaşımlarının eğitimi için kavramsal yağış-akış modellerinin belirli çıktılarının kullanılmasına dayanmaktadır. Bu paralel hibridizasyonda, kavramsal ve makine öğrenimi modellerinin parametre tahminleri peş peşe gerçekleştirilmektedir. Ancak hem kavramsalhem de makine öğrenimi modellerinin parametreleri arasındaki karşılıklı etkileşimin dikkate alınmaması bu hibritleme yönteminin önemli dezavantajlarından biri olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Ayrıca ardışık kalibrasyonlar, hesap yoğunluğunu aşırı artırabilmektedir. Bu tez çalışmasında, bahsi geçen dezavantajların üstesinden gelmek için, iki yapay zekâ modeli (yapay sinir ağları ve destek vektör regresyonu), toplu bir kavramsal model olan dinamik su bütçesi modeli (dynwbm) ile seri hibritleme yaklaşımı kullanılarak hibritlenmiştir. Daha sonra önerilen hibrit modellerde tanımlanan tüm potansiyel parametreler eş zamanlı olarak kalibre edilmiştir. Bu iç içe yapının makine öğrenimi katmanı, aylık akış serilerini daha iyi simüle etmek için kavramsal parametrelerden elde edilen farklı çıktı kombinasyonlarını kullanmaktadır. Hibrit parçacık sürü optimizasyon algoritması ile eğitilen bu yeni hibrit modeller Gediz Havzası’nda bulunan dokuz adet akım gözlem istasyonunda sınanmıştır. Performans indislerine göre, seri hibrit modeller tekil modellerden ve paralel hibrit tiplerden daha iyi performans sergilemişlerdir. Netice itibari ile kavramsal bir modelin ve makine öğrenimi algoritmalarının öncül özelliklerini harmanlayan yeni bir modelleme yaklaşımının tutarlılığı ve uygulanabilirliği detaylı bir şekilde kanıtlanmıştır., The most common hybridization practice in rainfall-runoff modeling is implemented by using the certain outputs of conceptual rainfall-runoff models for the training of machine learning approaches. In that parallel coupling hybridization, the parameter estimations of the conceptual and machine learning models are consecutively carried out. However, this application has a crucial drawback since the mutual interaction between the parameters operating both conceptual and machine learning models is not taken into consideration. Moreover, the cascade calibrations can unnecessarily increase the computational complexity. In this thesis study, to overcome these disadvantages, two artificial intelligence models (artificial neural networks and support vector regression) were integrated with the dynamic water budget model (dynwbm) that is a lumped conceptual model. Then, all potential parameters defined in proposed serial hybrid models were simultaneously calibrated. The machine learning layer of this intertwined structure uses different output combinations obtained from the conceptual parameters in order to better simulate monthly runoff series. These new hybrid models trained through hybrid particle swarm optimization algorithm were performed at the Gediz River Basin. The performance indices pointed out that the serial hybrid models outperformed the solo models and coupled parallel types. Consequently, both the robustness and applicability of this new modeling framework, which makes use of the prominent skills of a conceptual model and machine learning algorithms, has been comprehensively provided.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of red blood cell transfusion and/or inotropic/vasopressor agent infusion during intraoperative and postoperative first 24-hour period on 30-day and one-year survival. Materials and Methods: In the final analysis, 133 patients who underwent radical cystectomy and urinary diversion surgery between November 2011 and January 2019 were included in this study. Perioperative anesthesia management early postoperative intensive care patient follow-ups were based on. Results: A statistically significant relationship was found between intraoperative red blood cell transfusion and one)year mortality rates. A statistically significant relationship was found between red blood cell transfusion in the intensive care unit and postoperative 30-day mortality rates. The relationship between vasopressor/inotrope agent infusion in intensive care unit and postoperative 30- day mortality was statistically significant. Conclusion: In radical cystectomy and urinary diversion, intraoperative red blood cell and/or inotrope/vasopressor drug administration, and red blood cell transfusion within first 24 postoperative hours in intensive care unit are associated with lower survival rates in both early and late periods. Future studies should focus on developing and implementing different strategies for perioperative blood management and maintenance of patient hemodynamics that may affect early and late outcomes. Abstract

The majority of microplastic research has focused on seawater, with fewer than 4% of microplasticsrelated studies occurring on freshwaters. The limited available information suggests that the abundance of microplastics in freshwaters is often as high or even higher than marine environments. However, comprehensive investigations on occurrence and fate of microplastics in freshwaters are scarce and highly fragmented, partly because detection and identification of microplastic particles is rather complex. In addition, up to now, harmonized and standardized protocols for the sampling and analysis of microplastics in freshwaters do not exist, and studies with different research aims and hypotheses often report unstandardized results, making comparison among studies difficult. In the present study, we performed the first global standardized sampling and analysis effort to investigate the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in surface water of lakes and reservoirs with different anthropogenic impacts. Participants aim to collect water samples of freshwater systems with different features (e.g., area, depth, thermal behavior, watershed), following a common protocol. This 18 establishes the collection of samples by horizontal trawling of a plankton net and, after treatment with hydrogen peroxide, the polymer identification through micro-Raman spectroscopy. This GLEON project will allow obtaining comparable data about microplastic contamination in different freshwater systems around the globe. With this global dataset, our goals are to determine whether a relationship exists between the abundance of microplastics and the waterbody/watershed attributes and understand which factors are likely to influence the occurrence of microplastics in surface water of lentic systems. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

50. Short-term fish predation destroys resilience of zooplankton communities and prevents recovery of phytoplankton control by zooplankton grazing

Abstract

Planktivorous fish predation directly affects zooplankton biomass, community and size structure, and may indirectly induce a trophic cascade to phytoplankton. However, it is not clear how quickly the zooplankton community structure and the cascading effects on phytoplankton recover to the unaffected state (i.e. resilience) once short-term predation by fish stops. The resilience has implications for the ecological quality and restoration measures in aquatic ecosystems. To assess the short-term zooplankton resilience against fish predation, we conducted a mesocosm experiment consisting of 10 enclosures, 6 with fish and 4 without fish. Plankton communities from a natural lake were used to establish phytoplankton and zooplankton in the mesocosms. High biomasses (about 20 g wet mass m-3) of juvenile planktivorous fish (perch, Perca fluviatilis) were allowed to feed on zooplankton in fish enclosures for four days. Thereafter, we removed fish and observed the recovery of the zooplankton community and its cascading effect on trophic interactions in comparison with no fish enclosures for four weeks. Short-term fish predation impaired resilience in zooplankton community by modifying community composition, as large zooplankton, such as calanoids, decreased just after fish predation and did not re-appear afterwards, whereas small cladocerans and rotifers proliferated. Total zooplankton biomass increased quickly within two weeks after fish removal, and at the end even exceeded the biomass measured before fish addition. Despite high biomass, the dominance of small zooplankton released phytoplankton from grazer control in fish enclosures. Accordingly, the zooplankton community did not recover from the effect of fish predation, indicating low short-term resilience. In contrast, in no fish enclosures without predation disturbance, a high zooplankton:phytoplankton biomass ratio accompanied by low phytoplankton yield (Chlorophyll-a:Total phosphorus ratio) reflected phytoplankton control by zooplankton over the experimental period. Comprehensive views on short and long-term resilience of zooplankton communities are essential for restoration and management strategies of aquatic ecosystems to better predict responses to global warming, such as higher densities of planktivorous fish.
