We analyse the transmission spectra of KELT-20b/MASCARA-2b to search for possible thermal inversion agents. The data consist of three transits obtained using HARPSN and one using CARMENES. We removed stellar and telluric lines before cross-correlating the residuals with spectroscopic templates produced using a 1D plane-parallel model, assuming an isothermal atmosphere and chemical equilibrium at solar metallicity. Using a likelihood-mapping method, we detect Fe i at > 13σ, Ca ii H$\&$K at > 6σ and confirm the previous detections of Fe ii, Ca ii IR Triplet, and Na i D. The detected signal of Fe i is shifted by −3.4 ± 0.4 km s−1 from the planetary rest frame, which indicates a strong day–night wind. Our likelihood-mapping technique also reveals that the absorption features of the detected species extend to different altitudes in the planet’s atmosphere. Assuming that the line lists are accurate, we do not detect other potential thermal inversion agents (NaH, MgH, AlO, SH, CaO, VO, FeH, and TiO) suggesting that non-chemical equilibrium mechanisms (e.g. a cold-trap) might have removed Ti- and V-bearing species from the upper atmosphere. Our results, therefore, show that KELT-20b/MASCARA-2b cannot possess an inversion layer caused by a TiO/VO-related mechanism. The presence of an inversion layer would therefore likely be caused by metal atoms such as Fe i and Fe ii. Finally, we report a double-peak structure in the Fe i signal in all of our data sets that could be a signature of atmospheric dynamics. However, further investigation is needed to robustly determine the origin of the signal.

We report on Fe I in the day-side atmosphere of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-33b, providing evidence for a thermal inversion in the presence of an atomic species. We also introduce a new way to constrain the planet's brightness variation throughout its orbit, including its day-night contrast and peak phase offset, using high-resolution Doppler spectroscopy alone. We do so by analyzing high-resolution optical spectra of six arcs of the planet's phase curve, using ESPaDOnS on the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope and HDS on the Subaru telescope. By employing a likelihood mapping technique, we explore the marginalized distributions of parameterized atmospheric models, and detect Fe I emission at high significance ($>10.4σ$) in our combined data sets, located at $K_{\rm p}=222.1\pm0.4$ km/s and $v_{\rm sys}=-6.5\pm0.3$ km/s. We present a novel, to the best of our knowledge, remote gas detection and identification technique based on correlation spectroscopy with a piezoelectric tunable fiber-optic Fabry–Perot filter. We show that the spectral correlation amplitude between the filter transmission window and gas absorption features is related to the gas absorption optical depth, and that different gases can be distinguished from one another using their correlation signal phase. Using a previously captured telluric-corrected high-resolution near-infrared spectrum of Venus, we show that the radial velocity of Venus can be extracted from the phase of higher order harmonic lock-in signals. This correlation spectroscopy technique has applications in the detection and radial velocity determination of weak spectral features in astronomy and remote sensing. We experimentally demonstrate a remote C O 2 detection system using a lock-in amplifier, fiber-optic Fabry–Perot filter, and single channel avalanche photodiode.

We present a ground-based optical transmission spectrum for the warm Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-110b from two transit observations made with the FOcal Reducer and Spectrograph (FORS2) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The spectrum covers the wavelength range from 4000 to 8333\AA, which is binned in 46 transit depths measured to an averaged precision of 220 parts per million (ppm) over an averaged 80\AA~bin for a Vmag=12.8 star. The measured transit depths are unaffected by a dilution from a close A-type field dwarf, which was fully resolved. The overall main characteristic of the transmission spectrum is an increasing radius with wavelength and a lack of the theoretically predicted pressure-broadened sodium and potassium absorption features for a cloud-free atmosphere. We analyze archival high-resolution optical spectroscopy and find evidence for low to moderate activity of the host star, which we take into account in the atmospheric retrieval analysis. Using the AURA retrieval code, we find that the observed transmission spectrum can be best explained by a combination of unocculted stellar faculae and a cloud deck. Transmission spectra of cloud-free and hazy atmospheres are rejected at a high confidence. With a possible cloud deck at its terminator, WASP-110b joins the increasing population of irradiated hot-Jupiter exoplanets with cloudy atmospheres observed in transmission., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal

The absorption spectra of distant targets can be used for remote gas detection. However, the detection of very faint absorption features is difficult since noise can dominate the molecular signal in the acquired spectrum. Rather than using typical dispersive spectroscopy, high sensitivity remote gas sensing is possible by correlation spectroscopy using a spectral matching filter. In this work, we use a thermo-optically tunable nanophotonic silicon waveguide ring resonator as an integrated spectral filter to obtain a correlation signal proportional to the absorption spectrum of a specific gas. Long-term stellar activity variations can affect the detectability of long-period and Earth-analogue extrasolar planets. We have, for 54 stars, analysed the long-term trend of five activity indicators: log$R'_\mathrm{{HK}}$, the cross-correlation function (CCF) bisector span, CCF full-width-at-half-maximum, CCF contrast, and the area of the Gaussian fit to the CCF; and studied their correlation with the RVs. The sign of the correlations appears to vary as a function of stellar spectral type, and the transition in sign signals a noteworthy change in the stellar activity properties where earlier type stars appear more plage dominated. These transitions become more clearly defined when considered as a function of the convective zone depth. Therefore, it is the convective zone depth (which can be altered by stellar metallicity) that appears to be the underlying fundamental parameter driving the observed activity correlations. In addition, for most of the stars, we find that the RVs become increasingly red-shifted as activity levels increase, which can be explained by the increase in the suppression of convective blue-shift. However, we also find a minority of stars where the RVs become increasingly blue-shifted as activity levels increase. Finally, using the correlation found between activity indicators and RVs, we removed RV signals generated by long-term changes in stellar activity. We present ground-based, spectroscopic observations of two transits of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-121b covering the wavelength range $\approx$500 - 950 nm using Gemini/GMOS. We use a Gaussian process framework to model instrumental systematics in the light curves, and also demonstrate the use of the more generalised Student's-T process to verify our results. We find that our measured transmission spectrum, whilst showing overall agreement, is slightly discrepant with results obtained using HST/STIS, particularly for wavelengths shortward of $\approx$650 nm. In contrast to the STIS results, we find evidence for an increasing blueward slope and little evidence for absorption from either TiO or VO in our retrieval, in agreement with a number of recent studies performed at high-resolution. We suggest that this might point to some other absorbers, particularly some combination of recently detected atomic metals, in addition to scattering by hazes, being responsible for the excess optical absorption and observed vertical thermal inversion. Our results are also broadly consistent with previous ground-based photometry and 3D GCM predictions, however, these assumed different chemistry to our retrievals. In addition, we show that the GMOS observations are repeatable over short periods (days), similarly to the HST/STIS observations. Their difference over longer periods (months) could well be the result of temporal variability in the atmospheric properties (i.e. weather) as predicted by theoretical models of ultra-hot Jupiters; however, more mundane explanations such as instrumental systematics and stellar activity cannot be fully ruled out, and we encourage future observations to explore this possibility., Comment: 17 pages, 10 Figures. Exoplanetary biosignatures, molecular compounds which indicate a likelihood of extraterrestrial life, can be detected by highly sensitive spectroscopy of starlight which passes through the atmospheres of exoplanets towards the Earth. Such sensitive measurements can only be accomplished with the next generation of telescopes, leading to a corresponding increase in cost and complexity spectrometers. Integrated astrophotonic instruments are well-suited to address these challenges through their low-cost fabrication and compact geometries. We propose and characterize an integrated photonic gas sensor which detects the correlation between the near-infrared quasi-periodic vibronic absorption line spectrum of a gas and a silicon waveguide ring resonator transmittance comb. This technique enables lock-in amplification detection for real-time detection of faint biosignatures for reduced observation timescales and rapid exoplanetary atmosphere surveys using highly compact instrumentation.

[abridged] Efficient absorption of stellar UV and visible radiation by TiO and VO is predicted to drive temperature inversions in the upper atmospheres of hot Jupiters. However, few inversions or detections of TiO or VO have been reported, and results are often contradictory. Using the improved ExoMol Toto line list, we searched for TiO emission in the dayside spectrum of WASP-33b using the same data in which the molecule was previously detected with an older line list at 4.8$\sigma$. We intended to confirm the molecular detection and quantify the signal improvement offered by the ExoMol Toto line list. Data from the High Dispersion Spectrograph on the Subaru Telescope was extracted and reduced in an identical manner to the previous study. Stellar and telluric contamination were then removed. High-resolution TiO emission models of WASP-33b were created using the radiative transfer code petitRADTRANS and cross-correlated with the data. We measure a 4.3$\sigma$ TiO emission signature using the ExoMol Toto models, corresponding to a WASP-33b orbital velocity semi-amplitude of $K_\mathrm{p}=252.9^{+5.0}_{-5.3}\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$ and a system velocity of $v_\mathrm{sys}=-23.0^{+4.7}_{-4.6}\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$. Injection-recovery tests using models based on the new and earlier line lists indicate that if the new models provide a perfect match to the planet spectrum, the significance of the TiO detection should have increased by a factor of $\sim$2. Although the TiO signal we find is statistically significant, comparison with previous works makes our result too ambiguous to claim a clear-cut detection. Unexpectedly, the new ExoMol Toto models provide a weaker signal than that found previously, which is offset in $K_\mathrm{p}$-$v_\mathrm{sys}$ space. Absorption spectroscopy is widely used in sensing and astronomy to understand molecular compositions on microscopic to cosmological scales. However, typical dispersive spectroscopic techniques require multichannel detection, fundamentally limiting the ability to detect extremely weak signals when compared to direct photometric methods. We report the realization of direct spectral molecular detection using a silicon nanophotonic waveguide resonator, obviating dispersive spectral acquisition. We use a thermally tunable silicon ring resonator with a transmission spectrum matched and cross-correlated to the quasi-periodic vibronic absorption lines of hydrogen cyanide. We show that the correlation peak amplitude is proportional to the number of overlapping ring resonances and gas lines, and that molecular specificity is obtained from the phase of the correlation signal in a single detection channel. Our results demonstrate on-chip correlation spectroscopy that is less restricted by the signal-to-noise penalty of other spectroscopic approaches, enabling the detection of faint spectral signatures.

We analyze the high-resolution emission spectrum of WASP-33b taken using the High Dispersion Spectrograph (R\,$\approx$\,165,000) on the 8.2-m Subaru telescope. The data cover $\lambda$\,$\approx$\,$6170$-$8817$\,\AA, divided over 30 spectral orders. The telluric and stellar lines are removed using a de-trending algorithm, {\sc SysRem}, before cross-correlating with planetary spectral templates. We calculate the templates assuming a 1-D plane-parallel hydrostatic atmosphere including continuum opacity of bound-free H$^{-}$ and Rayleigh scattering by H$_{2}$ with a range of constant abundances of Fe\,{\sc i}. Using a likelihood-mapping analysis, we detect an Fe\,{\sc i} emission signature at 6.4-$\sigma$ located at $K_{\mathrm{p}}$ of 226.0\,$^{+2.1}_{-2.3}$\,km\,s$^{-1}$and $v_{\mathrm{sys}}$ of -3.2\,$^{+2.1}_{-1.8}$\,km\,s$^{-1}$ -- consistent with the planet's expected velocity in the literature. We also confirm the existence of a thermal inversion in the day-side of the planet which is very likely to be caused by the presence of Fe\,{\sc i} and previously-detected TiO in the atmosphere. We report ground-based transmission spectroscopy of the highly irradiated and ultra-short period hot-Jupiter WASP-103b covering the wavelength range $\approx$ 400-600 nm using the FORS2 instrument on the Very Large Telescope. The light curves show significant time-correlated noise which is mainly invariant in wavelength and which we model using a Gaussian process. The precision of our transmission spectrum is improved by applying a common-mode correction derived from the white light curve, reaching typical uncertainties in transit depth of $\approx$ 2x10$^{-4}$ in wavelength bins of 15 nm. After correction for flux contamination from a blended companion star, our observations reveal a featureless spectrum across the full range of the FORS2 observations and we are unable to confirm the Na absorption previously inferred using Gemini/GMOS or the strong Rayleigh scattering observed using broad-band light curves. We performed a Bayesian atmospheric retrieval on the full optical-infrared transmission spectrum using the additional data from Gemini/GMOS, HST/WFC3 and Spitzer observations and recover evidence for H$_2$O absorption at the 4.0$\sigma$ level. However, our observations are not able to completely rule out the presence of Na, which is found at 2.0$\sigma$ in our retrievals. This may in part be explained by patchy/inhomogeneous clouds or hazes damping any absorption features in our FORS2 spectrum, but an inherently small scale height also makes this feature challenging to probe from the ground. Our results nonetheless demonstrate the continuing potential of ground-based observations for investigating exoplanet atmospheres and emphasise the need for the application of consistent and robust statistical techniques to low-resolution spectra in the presence of instrumental systematics., Comment: 17 pages, 8 Figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Absorption spectroscopy is a powerful technique for characterizing remote gas composition where direct interaction with a target it not possible. While dispersive spectroscopy is typically used to acquire a spectrum with which the gas presence is determined, correlation spectroscopy can directly detect such spectral features in a single detection channel. Recent observations of the ultra-hot Jupiter WASP-76b have revealed a diversity of atmospheric species. Here we present new high-resolution transit spectroscopy of WASP-76b with GRACES at the Gemini North Observatory, serving as a baseline for the Large and Long Program "Exploring the Diversity of Exoplanet Atmospheres at High Spectral Resolution" (Exoplanets with Gemini Spectroscopy, or ExoGemS for short). With a broad spectral range of $400 - 1050$ nm, these observations allow us to search for a suite of atomic species. We recover absorption features due to neutral sodium (Na I), and report a new detection of the ionized calcium (Ca II) triplet at ~ $850$ nm in the atmosphere of WASP-76b, complementing a previous detection of the Ca II H & K lines. The triplet has line depths of $0.295 \pm 0.034$% at ~ $849.2$ nm, $0.574 \pm 0.041$% at ~ $854.2$ nm, and $0.454 \pm 0.024$% at ~ $866.2$ nm, corresponding to effective radii close to (but within) the planet's Roche radius. These measured line depths are significantly larger than those predicted by model LTE and NLTE spectra obtained on the basis of a pressure-temperature profile computed assuming radiative equilibrium. The discrepancy suggests that the layers probed by our observations are either significantly hotter than predicted by radiative equilibrium and/or in a hydrodynamic state. Our results shed light on the exotic atmosphere of this ultra-hot world, and will inform future analyses from the ExoGemS survey., 19 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. High-resolution Doppler-resolved spectroscopy has opened up a new window into the atmospheres of both transiting and non-transiting exoplanets. Here, we present VLT/UVES observations of a transit of WASP-121b, an 'ultra-hot' Jupiter previously found to exhibit a temperature inversion and detections of multiple species at optical wavelengths. We present initial results using the blue arm of UVES ($\approx$3700-5000A), recovering a clear signal of neutral Fe in the planet's atmosphere at >8$\sigma$, which could contribute to (or even fully explain) the temperature inversion in the stratosphere. However, using standard cross-correlation methods, it is difficult to extract physical parameters such as temperature and abundances. Recent pioneering efforts have sought to develop likelihood `mappings' that can be used to directly fit models to high-resolution datasets. We introduce a new framework that directly computes the likelihood of the model fit to the data, and can be used to explore the posterior distribution of parameterised model atmospheres via MCMC techniques. Our method also recovers the physical extent of the atmosphere, as well as account for time- and wavelength-dependent uncertainties. We measure a temperature of $3710^{+490}_{-510}$K, indicating a higher temperature in the upper atmosphere when compared to low-resolution observations. We also show that the Fe I signal is physically separated from the exospheric Fe II. However, the temperature measurements are highly degenerate with aerosol properties; detection of additional species, using more sophisticated atmospheric models, or combining these methods with low-resolution spectra should help break these degeneracies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 14 pages, 7 figures

We search for transiting exoplanets around the star $\beta$ Pictoris using high resolution spectroscopy and Doppler imaging that removes the need for standard star observations. These data were obtained on the VLT with UVES during the course of an observing campaign throughout 2017 that monitored the Hill sphere transit of the exoplanet $\beta$ Pictoris b. We utilize line profile tomography as a method for the discovery of transiting exoplanets. By measuring the exoplanet distortion of the stellar line profile, we remove the need for reference star measurements. We demonstrate the method with white noise simulations, and then look at the case of $\beta$ Pictoris, which is a $\delta$ Scuti pulsator. We describe a method to remove the stellar pulsations and perform a search for any transiting exoplanets in the resultant data set. We inject fake planet transits with varying orbital periods and planet radii into the spectra and determine the recovery fraction. In the photon noise limited case we can recover planets down to a Neptune radius with an $\sim$80% success rate, using an 8 m telescope with a $R\sim 100,000$ spectrograph and 20 minutes of observations per night. The pulsations of $\beta$ Pictoris limit our sensitivity to Jupiter-sized planets, but a pulsation removal algorithm improves this limit to Saturn-sized planets. We present two planet candidates, but argue that their signals are most likely caused by other phenomena. We have demonstrated a method for searching for transiting exoplanets that (i) does not require ancillary calibration observations, (ii) can work on any star whose rotational broadening can be resolved with a high spectral dispersion spectrograph and (iii) provides the lowest limits so far on the radii of transiting Jupiter-sized exoplanets around $\beta$ Pictoris with orbital periods from 15 days to 200 days with >50% coverage., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 8 pages, 8 figures. We present a correlation spectrometer using a silicon waveguide ring resonator for the identification of molecules in stellar and planetary atmospheres. We tailor the free spectral range of a ring resonator to the vibronic overtones of carbon dioxide in the near infrared. The ring resonator spectrum is modulated via the thermo-optic effect and produces a detection signal unique to carbon dioxide. With a temperature akin to an M-dwarf, WASP-33b is among the hottest Jupiters known, making it an ideal target for high-resolution optical spectroscopy. By analyzing both transmission and emission spectra, we aim to substantiate previous reports of atmospheric TiO and a thermal inversion within the planet's atmosphere. We observed two transits and six arcs of the phase curve with ESPaDOns on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and HIRES on the Keck telescope, which provide high spectral resolution and ample wavelength coverage. We employ the Doppler cross-correlation technique to search for the molecular signatures of TiO and H$_2$O in these spectra, using models based on the TiO line list of Plez (2012). Though we cannot exclude line-list-dependent effects, our data do not corroborate previous indications of a thermal inversion. Instead we place a $3\sigma$ upper limit of $10^{-9}$ on the volume mixing ratio of TiO for the T-P profile we consider. While we are unable to constrain the volume mixing ratio of water, our strongest constraint on TiO comes from day-side emission spectra. This apparent absence of a stratosphere sits in stark contrast to previous observations of WASP-33b as well as theoretical predictions for the atmospheres of highly irradiated planets. The discrepancy could be due to variances between line lists, and we stress that detection limits are only as good as the line list employed, and are only valid for the specific T-P profile considered due to the strong degeneracy between lapse rate ($dT/d\log P$) and molecular abundance., Comment: Accepted to AJ. 20 pages, 17 figures

We present high-resolution optical transmission spectroscopy of two sub-Saturn mass transiting exoplanets, HAT-P-12b and WASP-69b. With relatively low densities and high atmospheric scale heights, these planets are particularly well-suited to characterization through transit spectroscopy, and serve as ideal candidates for extending previously-tested methods to lower planetary masses. Using a single transit for each planet, we take advantage of the Doppler cross-correlation technique to search for sodium, potassium, and water absorption features. Our analysis reveals a likely ($3.2\sigma$) detection of sodium absorption features in the atmosphere of HAT-P-12b, and enables us to place constraints on the presence of alkaline and molecular species in the atmospheres of both planets. With our results, we highlight the efficacy of ground-based campaigns for characterizing exoplanetary atmospheres, and pave the way for future analyses of low-mass planets., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

WASP-12b is one of the most well-studied transiting exoplanets, as its highly-inflated radius and its 1.1 day orbit around a G0-type star make it an excellent target for atmospheric categorisation through observation during its secondary eclipse. We present two new secondary eclipse observations of WASP-12b, acquired a year apart with the Wide Field Camera on the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) and the IO:O instrument on the Liverpool Telescope (LT). These observations were conducted in the $i^\prime$-band, a window expected to be dominated by TiO features if present in appreciable quantities in the upper atmosphere. We measured eclipse depths that disagree with each other by $\sim$3$\sigma$ (0.97 $\pm$ 0.14 mmag on the INT and 0.44 $\pm$ 0.21 mmag on the LT), a result that is mirrored in previous $z^\prime$-band secondary eclipse measurements for WASP-12b. We explore explanations for these disagreements, including systematic errors and variable thermal emission in the dayside atmosphere of WASP-12b caused by temperature changes of a few hundred Kelvin: a possibility we cannot rule out from our analysis. Full-phase curves observed with TESS and CHEOPS have the potential to detect similar atmospheric variability for WASP-12b and other optimal targets, and a strategic, multi-telescope approach to future ground-based secondary eclipse observations is required to discriminate between explanations involving storms and systematics., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS. 11 pages (including 2 pages of appendices), 5 figures

With a day-side temperature in excess of 4500K, comparable to a mid-K-type star, KELT-9b is the hottest planet known. Its extreme temperature makes KELT-9b a particularly interesting test bed for investigating the nature and diversity of gas giant planets. We observed the transit of KELT-9b at high spectral resolution (R$\sim$94,600) with the CARMENES instrument on the Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope. Using these data, we detect for the first time ionized calcium (CaII triplet) absorption in the atmosphere of KELT-9b; this is the second time that CaII has been observed in a hot Jupiter. Our observations also reveal prominent H$\alpha$ absorption, confirming the presence of an extended hydrogen envelope around KELT-9b. We compare our detections with an atmospheric model and find that all four lines form between atmospheric temperatures of 6100 K and 8000 K and that the CaII lines form at pressures between 10 and 50 nbar while the H$\alpha$ line forms at a lower pressure ($\sim$6 nbar), higher up in the atmosphere. The altitude that the core of H$\alpha$ line forms is found to be $\sim$1.4 R$_{p}$, well within the planetary Roche lobe ($\sim$1.9 R$_{p}$). The analysis and interpretation of exoplanet spectra from time-series observations remains a significant challenge to our current understanding of exoplanet atmospheres, due to the complexities in understanding instrumental systematics. Previous observations of the hot Jupiter WASP-31b using transmission spectroscopy at low-resolution have presented conflicting results. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations detected a strong potassium feature at high significance (4.2\sigma), which subsequent ground-based spectro-photometry with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) failed to reproduce. Here, we present high-resolution observations (R>80,000) of WASP-31b with the UVES spectrograph, in an effort to resolve this discrepancy. We perform a comprehensive search for potassium using differential transit light curves, and integration over the planet's radial velocity. Our observations do not detect K absorption at the level previously reported with HST, consistent with the VLT observations. We measure a differential light curve depth $\Delta F = 0.00031 \pm 0.00036$ using 40\AA\ bins centred on the planet's K feature, and set an upper limit on the core line depth of $\Delta F \leq 0.007$ (3\sigma) at a few times the resolution limit ($\approx0.24\AA$). These results demonstrate that there are still significant limitations to our understanding of instrumental systematics even with our most stable space-based instrumentation, and that care must be taken when extracting narrow band signatures from low-resolution data. Broad absorption signatures from alkali metals, such as the sodium (Na I) and potassium (K I) resonance doublets, have long been predicted in the optical atmospheric spectra of cloud-free irradiated gas-giant exoplanets1,2,3. However, observations have only revealed the narrow cores of these features rather than the full pressure-broadened profiles4-6. Cloud and haze opacity at the day-night planetary terminator are considered responsible for obscuring the absorption-line wings, which hinders constraints on absolute atmospheric abundances7-9. Here we present an optical transmission spectrum for the 'hot-Saturn' WASP-96b obtained with the Very Large Telescope, which exhibits the complete pressure-broadened profile of the sodium absorption feature. The spectrum is in excellent agreement with cloud-free, solar-abundance models assuming chemical equilibrium. We are able to measure a precise, absolute sodium abundance of log\epsilon_Na=6.9+0.6-0.4, and use it as a proxy to the planet's atmospheric metallicity relative to the solar value (Z_p/Z_\star=2.3+8.9/--1.7). This result is consistent with the mass-metallicity trend observed for solar-system planets and exoplanets10-12., Comment: Published in Nature

Multiple long and variable transits caused by dust from possibly disintegrating asteroids were detected in light curves of WD 1145+017. We present time-resolved spectroscopic observations of this target with QUCAM CCDs mounted in the Intermediate dispersion Spectrograph and Imaging System at the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope in two different spectral arms: the blue arm covering 3800-4025 {\AA} and the red arm covering 7000-7430 {\AA}. When comparing individual transits in both arms, our observations show with 20 {\sigma} significance an evident colour difference between the in- and out-of-transit data of the order of 0.05-0.1 mag, where transits are deeper in the red arm. We also show with > 6 {\sigma} significance that spectral lines in the blue arm are shallower during transits than out-of-transit. For the circumstellar lines it also appears that during transits the reduction in absorption is larger on the red side of the spectral profiles. Our results confirm previous findings showing the u'-band excess and a decrease in line absorption during transits. Both can be explained by an opaque body blocking a fraction of the gas disc causing the absorption, implying that the absorbing gas is between the white dwarf and the transiting objects. Planetary rings produce a distinct shape distortion in transit lightcurves. However, to accurately model such lightcurves the observations need to cover the entire transit, especially ingress and egress, as well as an out-of-transit baseline. Such observations can be challenging for long period planets, where the transits may last for over a day. Planetary rings will also impact the shape of absorption lines in the stellar spectrum, as the planet and rings cover different parts of the rotating star (the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect). These line-profile distortions depend on the size, structure, opacity, obliquity and sky projected angle of the ring system. For slow rotating stars, this mainly impacts the amplitude of the induced velocity shift, however, for fast rotating stars the large velocity gradient across the star allows the line distortion to be resolved, enabling direct determination of the ring parameters. We demonstrate that by modeling these distortions we can recover ring system parameters (sky-projected angle, obliquity and size) using only a small part of the transit. Substructure in the rings, e.g. gaps, can be recovered if the width of the features ($\delta W$) relative to the size of the star is similar to the intrinsic velocity resolution (set by the width of the local stellar profile, $\gamma$) relative to the stellar rotation velocity ($v$ sin$i$, i.e. $\delta W / R_* \gtrsim v$sin$i$/$\gamma$). This opens up a new way to study the ring systems around planets with long orbital periods, where observations of the full transit, covering the ingress and egress, are not always feasible., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

As an exoplanet orbits its host star it reflects and emits light, forming a distinctive phase curve. By observing this light, we can study the atmosphere and surface of distant planets. The planets in our Solar System show a wide range of atmospheric phenomena, with stable wind patterns, changing storms, and evolving anomalies. Brown dwarfs also exhibit atmospheric variability. Such temporal variability in the atmosphere of a giant exoplanet has not to date been observed. HAT-P-7 b is an exoplanet with a known offset in the peak of its phase curve. Here we present variations in the peak offset ranging between -0.086+0.033-0.033 to 0.143+0.040-0.037 in phase, implying that the peak brightness repeatedly shifts from one side of the planet's substellar point to the other. The variability occurs on a timescale of tens to hundreds of days. These shifts in brightness are indicative of variability in the planet's atmosphere, and result from a changing balance of thermal emission and reflected flux from the planet's dayside. We suggest that variation in wind speed in the planetary atmosphere, leading to variable cloud coverage on the dayside and a changing energy balance, is capable of explaining the observed variation., Published in Nature Astronomy. 24 pages, including Supplementary Information. Gravity darkening induced by rapid stellar rotation provides us with a unique opportunity to characterize the spin-orbit misalignment of a planetary system through analysis of its photometric transit. We use the gravity-darkened transit modeling code simuTrans to reproduce the transit light curve of Kepler-13Ab by separately analyzing phase-folded transits for 12 short-cadence Kepler quarters. We verify the temporal change in impact parameter indicative of spin-orbit precession identified by Szab\'o et al. (2012) and Masuda (2015), reporting a rate of change $db/dt = (-4.1 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-5}$ day$^{-1}$. We further investigate the effect of light dilution on the fitted impact parameter and find that less than 1% of additional light is sufficient to explain the seasonal variation seen in the Kepler quarter data. We then extend our precession analysis to the phase curve data from which we report a rate of change $db/dt = (-3.2 \pm 1.3) \times 10^{-5}$ day$^{-1}$. For extrasolar planets discovered using the radial velocity method, the spectral characterization of the host star leads to a mass-estimate of the star and subsequently of the orbiting planet. In contrast, if also the orbital velocity of the planet would be known, the masses of both star and planet could be determined directly using Newton's law of gravity, just as in the case of stellar double-line eclipsing binaries. Here we report on the detection of the orbital velocity of extrasolar planet HD209458b. High dispersion ground-based spectroscopy during a transit of this planet reveals absorption lines from carbon monoxide produced in the planet atmosphere, which shift significantly in wavelength due to the change in the radial component of the planet orbital velocity. These observations result in a mass determination of the star and planet of 1.00+-0.22 Msun and 0.64+-0.09 Mjup respectively. A ~2 km/sec blueshift of the carbon monoxide signal with respect to the systemic velocity of the host star suggests the presence of a strong wind flowing from the irradiated dayside to the non-irradiated nightside of the planet within the 0.01-0.1 mbar atmospheric pressure range probed by these observations. High-precision photometry of transiting exoplanet systems has contributed significantly to our understanding of the properties of their atmospheres. The best targets are the bright exoplanet systems, for which the high number of photons allow very high signal-to-noise ratios. Most of the current instruments are not optimised for these high-precision measurements, either they have a large read-out overhead to reduce the readnoise and/or their field-of-view is limited, preventing simultaneous observations of both the target and a reference star. Recently we have proposed a new wide-field imager for the Observatoir de Mont-Megantic optimised for these bright systems (PI: Jayawardhana). The instruments has a dual beam design and a field-of-view of 17' by 17'. The cameras have a read-out time of 2 seconds, significantly reducing read-out overheads. Over the past years we have obtained significant experience with how to reach the high precision required for the characterisation of exoplanet atmospheres. Based on our experience we provide the following advice: Get the best calibrations possible. In the case of bad weather, characterise the instrument (e.g. non-linearity, dome flats, bias level), this is vital for better understanding of the science data. Observe the target for as long as possible, the out-of-transit baseline is as important as the transit/eclipse itself. A short baseline can lead to improperly corrected systematic and mis-estimation of the red-noise. Keep everything (e.g. position on detector, exposure time) as stable as possible. Take care that the defocus is not too strong. For a large defocus, the contribution of the total flux from the sky-background in the aperture could well exceed that of the target, resulting in very strict requirements on the precision at which the background is measured.

We investigate the atmosphere of GJ1214b, a transiting super-Earth planet with a low mean density, by measuring its transit depth as a function of wavelength in the blue optical portion of the spectrum. It is thought that this planet is either a mini-Neptune, consisting of a rocky core with a thick, hydrogen-rich atmosphere, or a planet with a composition dominated by water. Most observations favor a water-dominated atmosphere with a small scale-height, however, some observations indicate that GJ1214b could have an extended atmosphere with a cloud layer muting the molecular features. In an atmosphere with a large scale-height, Rayleigh scattering at blue wavelengths is likely to cause a measurable increase in the apparent size of the planet towards the blue. We observed the transit of GJ1214b in the B-band with the FOcal Reducing Spectrograph (FORS) at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and in the g-band with both ACAM on the William Hershel Telescope (WHT) and the Wide Field Camera (WFC) at the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT). We find a planet-to-star radius ratio in the B-band of 0.1162+/-0.0017, and in the g-band 0.1180+/-0.0009 and 0.1174+/-0.0017 for the WHT & INT observations respectively. These optical data do not show significant deviations from previous measurements at longer wavelengths. In fact, a flat transmission spectrum across all wavelengths best describes the combined observations. We have conducted a comprehensive search for optical phase variations of all planet candidates with tight orbits in fifteen quarters of data from the Kepler space telescope. After correcting for systematics, we found eight systems that appear to show secondary eclipses as well as phase variations. Of these, five (Kepler-5, Kepler-6, Kepler-8, KOI-64 and KOI-2133) are new and three (TrES-2, HAT-P-7 and KOI-13) have previously published phase curves, albeit with many fewer observations. We model the full phase curve of each planet candidate, including the primary and secondary transits, and derive their albedos, day- and night-side temperatures, ellipsoidal variations and Doppler beaming. We find that KOI-64 and KOI-2133 have night-side temperatures well above their equilibrium values (while KOI-2133 also has an albedo >1), so we conclude that they are likely to be self-luminous objects rather than planets. The giant planet orbiting tau Bootis was among the first extrasolar planets to be discovered through the reflex motion of its host star. It is one of the brightest known and most nearby planets with an orbital period of just a few days. Over the course of more than a decade, measurements of its orbital inclination have been announced and refuted, and have subsequently remained elusive until now. Here we report on the detection of carbon monoxide absorption in the thermal day-side spectrum of tau Bootis b. At a spectral resolution of R~100,000, we trace the change in the radial velocity of the planet over a large range in phase, determining an orbital inclination of i=44.5+-1.5 degrees and a true planet mass of 5.95+-0.28 MJup. This result extends atmospheric characterisation to non-transiting planets. The strong absorption signal points to an atmosphere with a temperature that is decreasing towards higher altitudes. This is a stark contrast to the temperature inversion invoked for other highly irradiated planets, and supports models in which the absorbing compounds believed to cause such atmospheric inversions are destroyed by the ultraviolet emission from the active host star., To appear in the June 28 issue of Nature: main article + supplementary information

The Multi-site All-sky CAmeRA MASCARA is an instrument concept consisting of several stations across the globe, with each station containing a battery of low-cost cameras to monitor the near-entire sky at each location. Once all stations have been installed, MASCARA will be able to provide a nearly 24-hr coverage of the complete dark sky, down to magnitude 8, at sub-minute cadence. Its purpose is to find the brightest transiting exoplanet systems, expected in the V=4-8 magnitude range - currently not probed by space- or ground-based surveys. The bright/nearby transiting planet systems, which MASCARA will discover, will be the key targets for detailed planet atmosphere observations. We present studies on the initial design of a MASCARA station, including the camera housing, domes, and computer equipment, and on the photometric stability of low-cost cameras showing that a precision of 0.3-1% per hour can be readily achieved. We plan to roll out the first MASCARA station before the end of 2013. Recently, we presented the detection of carbon monoxide in the transmission spectrum of extrasolar planet HD209458b, using CRIRES, the Cryogenic high-resolution Infrared Echelle Spectrograph at ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT). The high spectral resolution observations (R=100,000) provide a wealth of information on the planet's orbit, mass, composition, and even on its atmospheric dynamics. The new observational strategy and data analysis techniques open up a whole world of opportunities. We therefore started an ESO large program using CRIRES to explore these, targeting both transiting and non-transiting planets in carbon monoxide, water vapour, and methane. Binaries are not always neatly aligned. Previous observations of the DI Her system showed that the spin axes of both stars are highly inclined with respect to one another and the orbital axis. Here, we report on a measurement of the spin-axis orientation of the primary star of the NY Cep system, which is similar to DI Her in many respects: it features two young early-type stars (~6 Myr, B0.5V+B2V), in an eccentric and relatively long-period orbit (e = 0.48, P = 15fd3). The sky projections of the rotation vector and the spin vector are well aligned (beta [subscript p] = 2[degrees] ± 4[degrees]), in strong contrast to DI Her. Although no convincing explanation has yet been given for the misalignment of DI Her, our results show that the phenomenon is not universal, and that a successful theory will need to account for the different outcome in the case of NY Cep., United States. Hot Jupiters are a class of extrasolar planet that orbit their parent stars at very short distances. Due to their close proximity, they are expected to be tidally locked, which can lead to a large temperature difference between their day and nightsides. Infrared observations of eclipsing systems have yielded dayside temperatures for a number of transiting planets. Furthermore the day-night contrast of the transiting extrasolar planet HD 189733b was mapped using infrared observations. It is expected that the contrast between the dayside and nightside of hot Jupiters is much higher at visual wavelengths as we move shortward of the peak emission, and could be further enhanced by reflected stellar light. Here we report on the analysis of optical photometric data of the transiting hot Jupiter CoRoT-1b, which cover 36 planetary orbits. The nightside hemisphere of the planet is consistent with being entirely black, with the dayside flux dominating the optical phase curve. This means that at optical wavelengths the planet's phase variation is just as we see it for the interior planets in our own solar system. We present a comprehensive analysis of planetary phase variations, including possible planetary light offsets, using eighteen quarters of data from the Kepler space telescope. After correcting for systematics, we found fourteen systems with significant detections in each of the phase curve components: planet's phase function, secondary eclipse, Doppler boosting and ellipsoidal variations. We model the full phase curve simultaneously, including primary and secondary transits, and derive albedos, day- and night-side temperatures and planet masses. Several tools have been developed in the past few years for the statistical analysis of the exoplanet search surveys, mostly using a combination of Monte Carlo simulations or a Bayesian approach. Here we present Quick-MESS, a grid-based, non-Monte Carlo tool aimed to perform statistical analyses on results from direct imaging surveys, as well as help with the planning of these surveys. Quick-MESS uses the (expected) contrast curves for direct imaging surveys to assess for each target the probability that a planet of a given mass and semimajor axis can be detected. By using a grid-based approach, Quick-MESS is typically more than an order of magnitude faster than tools based on Monte Carlo sampling of the planet distribution. In addition, Quick-MESS is extremely flexible, enabling the study of a large range of parameter space for the mass and semimajor axes distributions without the need of resimulating the planet distribution. The Kepler mission’s long-term monitoring of stars through high-precision photometry has not only revealed a plethora of exoplanet transits but also provided valuable data for characterizing a subset of these planets. Using over four years of Kepler observations, we have derived phase curves for over a dozen planets, and use these measurements to constrain their mass, brightness/temperature and energy redistribution between the day and the night sides. In our new study, we also investigate possible offsets of the peak brightness of the phase curve, which could be indicative of inhomogeneous clouds and/or substantial winds in the planet’s atmosphere. We find significant offsets for over a half-dozen planets. With this growing sample of measured phase curves, we are able to better examine the trends of hot Jupiter energy budgets and albedos, and for the first time relate these properties to the presence of clouds or winds on a planet.

Secondary eclipse observations of exoplanets at near-infrared wavelengths are important to constrain the energy budgets of hot-Jupiters, since they probe the radiation from the planet's atmosphere at the peak of the spectral energy distribution. Since this wavelength range is accesible from the ground, we have started the GROUnd-based Secondary Eclipse (GROUSE) project. As part of the GROUSE project, we target a sample of hot-Jupiters at near-infrared and optical wavelengths. Planets include TrES-3b, HAT-P-1, WASP-18b and WASP-33b.

We present ground-based optical transmission spectroscopy of the low-density hot Jupiter WASP-88b covering the wavelength range 4413-8333 {\AA} with the FORS2 spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope. The FORS2 white light curves exhibit a significant time-correlated noise which we model using a Gaussian Process and remove as a wavelength-independent component from the spectroscopic light curves. We analyse complementary photometric observations from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite and refine the system properties and ephemeris. We find a featureless transmission spectrum with increased absorption towards shorter wavelengths. We perform an atmospheric retrieval analysis with the AURA code, finding tentative evidence for haze in the upper atmospheric layers and a lower likelihood for a dense cloud deck.
