Abstract Background The gonadotropins lutropin and follitropin stimulate steroid synthesis in the gonads during gonadal maturation by promoting oogenesis and spermatogenesis. Endocrine disruptors such as lindane (γHCH) can alter the reproductive stage so and could alter puberty by interfering with lutropin and follitropin signaling. γHCH was classified by World Health Organization as “moderately restricted”, and in 2009 it is production and agricultural use was prohibited, under the Stockholm Convention, however, its use as a pharmaceutical treatment against lice and scabies is still allowed (and mainly, for use by the health sector). This study aimed to examine the effects of single-dose exposure to γHCH in young mice (Mus musculus) on lutropin and follitropin concentration, and to correlate gonadal maturity status and phenotypic characteristics. Methods Young γHCH-treated mice (16 females and 16 males) received a single dose of 25, 10, 5, or 0 µg/ml γHCH per gram of body weight, ocular route. Once secondary sexual characteristics were observed, the gonads were dissected and examined using histological techniques and the ovarian follicles were classified as dependent and independent of gonadotropins; the testicles were classified as inactive, early and late spermatogenesis; and the blood was processed with the lutropin and follitropin ELISA kit. Obesity, influenced by environmental pollutants, can lead to complex metabolic disruptions. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the molecular mechanisms underlying metabolically abnormal obesity caused by exposure to a high-fat diet (HFD) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Following the PRISMA guidelines, articles from 2019 to 2024 were gathered from Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed, and a random-effects meta-analysis was performed, along with subgroup analyses and pathway enrichment analyses. This study was registered in the Open Science Framework. Thirty-three articles, mainly case–control studies and murine models, were reviewed, and they revealed that combined exposure to HFD and PM2.5 resulted in the greatest weight gain (82.835 g, p = 0.048), alongside increases in high-density lipoproteins, insulin, and the superoxide dismutase. HFD enriched pathways linked to adipocytokine signaling in brown adipose tissue, while PM2.5 impacted genes associated with fat formation. Both exposures downregulated protein metabolism pathways in white adipose tissue and activated stress-response pathways in cardiac tissue. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor and AMP-activated protein kinase signaling pathways in the liver were enriched, influencing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. These findings highlight that combined exposure to HFD and PM2.5 amplifies body weight gain, oxidative stress, and metabolic dysfunction, suggesting a synergistic interaction with significant implications for metabolic health.

Abstract The Navachiste complex (NAV) is impacted by neighbored human activities and is located in the southwestern coastal zone of the Gulf of California. The study determines the trace metal (TM) and organochlorine pesticides (OCP) health risk content in the edible tissue of Sphoeroides spp. from NAV. The daily intakes (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), hazard index (HI), and carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks were calculated. Twenty OCP and seven TM were detected. Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn were above MRLs. The γ‒Chlordane was the most frequent OCP. The highest average concentration was for α‒HCH, followed by γ‒chlordane. With the high ratios of γ‒HCH, p, p′‒ DDD and p, p′‒DDD, and the absence of p, p′‒ DDT, the higher ratios for dieldrin and endrin than for aldrin, α‒ chlordane, γ‒chlordane, heptachlor, and heptachlor epoxide indicates historical contamination. In contrast, the residual products of methoxychlor, endosulfan, and its isomers indicate endosulfan's recent use. The TM EDI, THQ > 1 (at 120 g day−1), and the ILCR (> 1 × 10–6) were above minimum levels, showing a high-risk potential for cancer development in the long term.

This study was carried out in the Navachiste coastal lagoon, Mexico, surrounded by intensive agricultural and aquaculture activities that cause environmental pollution by the deposition of trace metal residues in the sediments of this coastal lagoon. The trace metals are bioaccumulated by benthic organisms such as the blue swimming warrior crab, Callinectes bellicosus, which inhabits this lagoon and is consumed by humans. Ninety-five C. bellicosus edible tissue samples were collected (April 2014–January 2015). The extraction procedure of the trace metals in edible tissue samples was carried out by acid digestion with nitric acid. Based on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of the United States, two indices were used to measure health risk: the estimated daily intake (EDI) and the target hazard quotient (THQ). The hazard index (HI) was used to calculate the probability of adverse carcinogenic risk and the target hazard quotient per sample (MHI) to calculate the probability of developing a carcinogenic or non-carcinogenic risk. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed significant differences among trace metal concentrations (p < 0.01), but all trace metal concentrations in the edible tissues of C. bellicosus were higher than the maximum residual limits (MRLs). The highest EDI was for Zn, Fe, and Cu, showing that the consumption of these crabs might represent health risks. The THQ >1 was for Ni, Zn, Cd, and Cu, and the HI = 16 revealed the risk of C. bellicosus for high-level consumers. The MHI showed that 98% of samples presented a THQ >1, implying a high rate of bioaccumulation of trace metals by the crabs independent of the sampling site in the NAV. The presence of trace metals in the edible tissue of crabs reflects contamination by trace metals, and the indices results mean that the NAV lagoon is constantly polluted with trace metal residues by neighboring agriculture and aquaculture activities. These trace metal residues are being bioaccumulated in the edible tissues of C. bellicosus due to its feeding habits, resulting in a health risk if its consumption is high, including carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks.

The goal of this study was to generate a method to examine seasonal variability by climatic classification and Pacific seasonal factors to identify extreme wet and dry events in northern Mexico for the period 1952–2013. Using the standardized precipitation and evapotranspiration index (SPEI) on scales of three months (SPEI-3) and 24 months (SPEI-24), the variability of extreme wet and dry events were measured. The SPEI-3 and SPEI-24 anomalies were divided by the standard deviation (standardized Z anomalies). A Pearson correlation for SPEI-3, SPEI-24, Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) and the oceanic El Niño index (ONI) was applied. Wet extreme events were recorded in 1954, 1968, 1976–1977, 1981, 1984, 1986 and 2003, of which the greatest magnitude was recorded in 1984 for the Sinaloa-very dry region. Extreme dry events were recorded in 1952–1953, 1990, 1997, 2003 and 2011–2013. The Z anomalies of the wet extreme events observed coincide with +PDO phase anomalies. In this study, the El Niño southern oscillation (ENSO) has little influence on wet and dry extreme events in northern Mexico. The negative phase anomalies of sea surface temperature (−SST) in the equatorial and eastern Pacific are indicators of extreme wet events. This study shows for the first time the influence of the PDO and the ONI on seasonal variability of extreme wet and dry events by climatic classification through the SPEI index in northern Mexico.
