INTRODUÇÃO: os materiais elastoméricos são considerados importantes fontes de força para a movimentação ortodôntica. OBJETIVO: avaliar a liberação de tensões de quatro marcas comerciais de elásticos ortodônticos em cadeia (Morelli, Ormco, TP e Unitek), em função do tempo, quando mantidas tensionadas por uma força inicial de 150g e imersas em saliva artificial a 37ºC. MÉTODOS: os elásticos em cadeia foram tensionados entre pinos de aço, fixados em uma placa de resina acrílica à distância de 15mm (Morelli e TP) e de 16mm (Unitek e Ormco), ambas medidas correspondendo a uma força de 150g. A leitura da quantidade de tensão liberada pelos elásticos foi realizada com um dinamômetro nos intervalos 30 minutos, 7, 14 e 21 dias. PURPOSE: To analyze, in vitro, the influence of a quartz-tungsten-halogen (QTH) and a plasma arc (PAC) on the degree of conversion and hardness of a composite resin, as well as the heat generated by the units. METHODS: Transbond XT disks were prepared and light-cured for 10, 20 and 30 seconds with a QTH (Curing Light XL 3000) or with a PAC (Apollo 95E) for 1, 2 and 3 seconds. The composite resin polymerization was evaluated by infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) and Knoop hardness number (KHN). The temperature at the curing tip was evaluated. The results were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey test (α=0.05). RESULTS: According to FTIR and KHN, the polymerization of the composite resin was statistically higher with the QTH. The temperature obtained with the QTH 20 s (45.44oC) and 30 s (45.84oC) was statistically higher than the QTH 10 s (39.90oC). The PAC 1 s (27.12oC), 2 s (28.48oC) and 3 s (29.96oC) presented the lowest temperature and did not differ statistically among them. CONCLUSION: Transbond XT light-activated for 10, 20 and 30 seconds with the QTH presented higher degree of conversion and hardness in comparison with those obtained with the PAC for 1, 2 and 3 seconds, and the QTH generated more heat than the PAC.

Um fator importante que define a eficácia dos aparelhos ortodônticos fixos é o atrito existente entre as superfícies de fios e braquetes. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo investigar o coeficiente de atrito estático entre fios de aço inoxidável e beta-titânio (TP Orthodontics) e braquetes de aço inoxidável (Dynalock® - Unitek), braquetes estéticos com slot de aço inoxidável (Clarity® - Unitek) e estéticos convencionais (Allure® - GAC). Para tanto, construiu-se um equipamento no Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e Mecatrônica da PUCRS. Antes de serem iniciados os testes, foi quantificado o erro de método e constatou-se que não houve interferência significante (p>0,05) do fator operador nas medições. Então, pôde-se calcular o valor do coeficiente de atrito, obtido pela divisão da força de atrito pela carga normal. O método estatístico utilizado neste estudo foi Análise de Variância (ANOVA) e teste de Comparações Múltiplas (Tukey). Constatou-se que: 1) a combinação com menor coeficiente de atrito foi composta pelo fio de aço inoxidável e braquete Dynalock® e a que apresentou maior coeficiente foi a do braquete Allure® com o fio de beta-titânio; 2) o fio de beta-titânio apresentou coeficiente de atrito significativamente maior do que o fio de aço inoxidável; 3) o braquete Dynalock® não apresentou diferenças significativas em relação ao coeficiente de atrito do braquete Clarity® quando o fio utilizado foi de beta-titânio. No entanto, quando o fio testado foi de aço inoxidável, apresentou coeficiente de atrito significativamente menor. O braquete Clarity® apresentou coeficiente de atrito significativamente menor do que o braquete Allure®.An important factor that defines the effectiveness of the appliances is the friction between the surfaces of wires and brackets. Thus, that study was developed in order to investigate the static friction coefficient between stainless steel and beta-titanium wires (TP Orthodontics) and the stainless steel brackets (Dynalock® - Unitek), esthetic brackets with a stainless steel slot (Clarity® - Unitek) and conventional esthetic brackets (Allure® - GAC). For this purpose, an equipment was built in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics at PUCRS. It should be stressed that before the tests began, the Method Error was quantified and it was found that there was no significant interference (p>0,05) by the factor operating in the measurements. From then, the friction coefficient could be calculated, obtained by dividing friction force by the normal load. The statistic method used in these study was Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Multiple Comparison test (Tukey). It was found that: 1) the combination with the lowest friction coefficient was constituted by the stainless steel wire against the Dynalock® bracket, and the one with the highest friction coefficient was that of the Allure® bracket with the beta-titanium wire; 2) the beta-titanium wire presented a friction coefficient that was significantly higher than the stainless steel wire; 3) the Dynalock® bracket did not present any significant differences in relation to the friction coefficient of the Clarity® bracket when the wire used was of beta-titanium. However, when the wire tested was of stainless steel, the Dynalock® bracket presented a significantly lower friction coefficient. The Clarity® bracket presented a significantly lower friction coefficient than the Allure® bracket.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of Candida spp. in dental plaque of users of fixed orthodontic appliances (FOA) and relate to their habits and characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We isolated and identified strains of Candida in saliva samples from individuals using FOA with the presence of microbial biofilm and individuals without the presence of biofilm (control group) in the laboratory cultivation. RESULTS: We analyzed 108 samples from individuals with biofilm and 51 individuals in the control group. Of the 108 samples analyzed, 52 (48.1%) were negative for Candida and 56 (55.2%) were positive, with eight patients were isolated two species of Candida, four patients with C. albicans and C. krusei, with one C. albicans and C. tropicalis, with one C. albicans and C. glabrata, with one C. tropicalis and C. glabrata and with one C. tropicalis and C. krusei. In the control group 33.3% had isolated Candida, even showing no biofilm. CONCLUSION: Were detected and pathogenic Candida species intrinsically resistant to conventional antifungal agents, emphasizing the importance of mycological diagnosis for appropriate treatment of infections caused by this group of fungi present in the oral cavity of individuals., OBJETIVOS: O presente estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a prevalência de Candida spp. em biofilme dentário de usuários de aparelhos ortodônticos fixos (AOF) e relacionar com seus hábitos e características. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram isolados e identificados cepas de Candida em amostras de saliva em indivíduos usuários de AOF com presença de biofilme microbiano e indivíduos usuários de AOF mas sem presença de biofilme (grupo controle), a partir do cultivo em laboratório. RESULTADOS: Neste estudo foram analisadas 108 amostras de indivíduos com biofilme, e 51 indivíduos no grupo controle. Das 108 amostras analisadas, 52 (48,1%) foram negativas para o gênero Candida e 56 (55,2%) foram positivas, sendo que em oito pacientes foram isolados duas espécies de Candida, quatro pacientes com C. albicans e C. krusei, um com C. albicans e C. tropicalis, um com C. albicans e C. glabrata, um com C. tropicalis e C. glabrata e um com C. tropicalis e C. krusei. No grupo controle 33,3% apresentaram isolamento de Candida, mesmo não apresentando biofilme. CONCLUSÃO: Foram detectadas espécies de Candida patogênicas e intrinsicamente resistentes aos convencionais antifúngicos, ressaltando a importância do diagnóstico micológico para um tratamento adequado das infecções causadas por este grupo de fungos presentes na cavidade oral dos indivíduos. ____________________________________________________

The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of two light units, a light-emitting diode (LED) and a plasma arc light (PAC), on the shear bond strength (SBS) of brackets bonded to enamel. Ninety bovine teeth were divided into six groups, according to the light-curing unit and exposure times used. In the LED (Ortholux; 3M-Unitek) group, the specimens were light cured for 5, 10, and 15 seconds. In the PAC (Apollo 95E; DenMed Technologies) group, the specimens were light cured for 3, 6, and 9 seconds. The brackets were bonded with Transbond XT (3M-Unitek), stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours and then submitted to SBS testing in a universal testing machine. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) was used to evaluate the amount of adhesive remaining on the teeth. According to analysis of variance and Tukey multiple comparisons test, the highest mean SBS was obtained with the LED at 15 seconds (16.68 MPa), which did not significantly differ from the LED 10 (14.76 MPa) or 5 (13.92 MPa) second groups ( P > 0.05). The LED 10 and 5 second groups were not significantly different from the PAC 9 second group (12.66 MPa) or from the PAC 6 second group (9.96 MPa). The lowest mean SBS was obtained with the PAC 3 second group (8.29 MPa), which did not differ significantly from the PAC 6 second group. The method of light curing did not influence the ARI, with score 3 predominant. The LED at 5 seconds and the PAC at 3 seconds provided sufficient mean SBS to resist either orthodontic or masticatory forces.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the influence of the light curing units on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-two premolars were divided into six groups (n=12): Group I: brackets bonded with Transbond and polymerization with halogen light; Group II: Transbond and LED; Group III: Fuji Ortho and halogen light; Group IV: Fuji Ortho and LED; Group V: Fuji Ortho, without acid and halogen light; Group VI: Fuji Ortho, without acid and LED. The groups were tested to shear strength in a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey's test. RESULTS: The composite resin presented higher shear bond strength than the resin-modified glass ionomer cement (p0.05). CONCLUSION: The shear bond strength was influenced by the material but not by the light-curing unit. The use of LED reduced the experimental time by approximately 60%, with the same curing efficiency.

METODOLOGIA: sobre a superfície de um segmento de banda (6 x 6mm) foi posicionada uma matriz com um orifício de 3mm de diâmetro na qual foi inserido o material para cimentação. Metade da amostra foi jateada com partículas de óxido de alumínio. Os corpos-de-prova foram armazenados a 37ºC por 24 horas em umidade relativa de 100% e submetidos ao teste de cisalhamento a uma velocidade de 0,5mm/min. Utilizou-se ANOVA e o teste de comparações múltiplas de Tukey para comparar os grupos em cada tipo de superfície estudada (com ou sem jateamento), e o teste t Student para amostras pareadas para a comparação dos grupos jateados e não-jateados (p=0,01).
