Abstract

This paper explores gender differences in injury severity risk using a comprehensive crash dataset including the driver, vehicle, environment, and roadway characteristics. For the purpose of this study, only single vehicle crashes that occurred in the Commonwealth of Virginia, collected in a five year period from 2011 to 2015, were used. This study contributes to the literature of crash analysis by incorporating an extensive dataset with normalized attributes. The dataset used for model estimation integrated from two different data sources. These data sources include Virginia Traffic Records Electronic Data System (TREDS) to incorporate crash information and Virginia Base Mapping Program to incorporate roadway characteristics. A two level nested logit model is developed for each gender, in order to relax the Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA) assumption. Several crash determinants including but not limited to, drivers characteristics, drivers behavior, vehicle condition, weather conditions, roadway geometry and surface conditions were found to have an impact on both male and female drivers. This study is an assessment of influence of different factors on crash severity segmented by gender. A few interesting results include; (i) female fatality risk exceeds male fatality risk when driving under the influence of alcohol, (ii) speeding contributes to lower fatality risk among female drivers compared to their male counterparts, (iii) poor vehicle conditions have no impact on injury risk to female drivers while having an increased injury risk among male drivers, and (iv) while driving in a work zone area increases the risk of property damage crashes, the impact is higher for male drivers compared to female drivers.

39. Access Weight Matrix: A Place and Mobility Infused Spatial Weight Matrix.

Abstract

This study introduces the Access Weight Matrix (AWM) to capture the spatial dependence of access across a geographical surface. AWM is a nonsymmetry, nonzero diagonal matrix with elements to be a function of (i) the spatial distribution of places, (ii) the number of places, and (iii) the travel‐time threshold to reach places rather than distance, contiguity, or adjacency. AWM is tested and validated to examine the spatial dependence of transit access to employment opportunities in the City of Chicago. Three observations are noticed. First, the degree of spatial dependence between the access of geographical units is not necessarily proportional to their proximity and is better explained by AWM than traditional spatial weight matrices regardless of the travel‐time threshold. Second, the time‐dependence feature of AWM improves the accuracy of capturing spatial dependence, particularly in short travel‐time thresholds. Third, near geographical units are not necessarily more related than distant geographical units even for access that is proved to be spatially highly correlated with neighboring units. With the increased ease of measuring access, research is expanding to explore the socioeconomic, demographic, and built‐environment correlates of access. 49. Spatial Inequity of Transit and Automobile Access Gap across America for Underserved Population

Abstract

This study examines the correlates of the Modal Access Gap (MAG) between transit and automobile to employment opportunities in the 45 most populated American metropolitan areas by testing spatial lag regression models and employing the bivariate local indicator of spatial autocorrelation (BiLISA) at the census block group geographical level. Four findings are discerned. First, MAG is positive regardless of the metropolitan area and travel-time threshold and ranges from 0.22 to 0.98. This indicates transit trails automobile in offering access to employment opportunities. Second, millennials and carless households tend to reside in areas with a narrower MAG, while people with disabilities reside in areas with a wider MAG. Third, areas with a high share of carless households and relatively low transit access to employment opportunities are primarily clustered in the suburbs and exurbs of American metropolitan areas. Fourth, the MAG disproportionately affects socially vulnerable populations, including the elderly, people with disabilities, low-income households, Hispanics, and African Americans. Compared with the national average, modal access inequity is prevalent for the elderly in 27, for people with disabilities in 22, for low-income households in 17, for Hispanics in 14, and for African Americans in 12 metropolitan areas. This research is a necessary step forward for instilling social equity into transport planning strategies in parallel with governmental efforts.
