1. Universal Design for Learning: Curriculum, Technology, and Accessibility.

Abstract

This paper examines how teachers, as educational designers, can utilize universal design for learning (UDL) concepts. UDL is a comprehensive approach to the design of educational systems that addresses elements necessary for the achievement of desired educational goals and objectives: elements such as equity among the participants, environmental supports, and the coupling between participant abilities and task requirements. The essential principles of UDL, which work synergistically, are: equitability, ergonomic soundness, perceptibility, cognitive soundness, error management, flexibility, and stability/predictability. The UDL principles presented in this paper draw from Enabling Technology Laboratory experiences as well as the knowledge and experience of many individuals, ranging from educators to engineers. Educational designers can systematically apply UDL principles to create more efficient and effective educational environments. (Contains 15 references, 1 table, and 7 figures.) (Author)

Abstract

A microelectromechanical systems analog tunable capacitor has been designed and fabricated for implementation into a two-pole UHF filter. Recent developments on the capacitor have improved the RF device performance significantly, and have resulted in improved UHF filter performance. In the 225-400-MHz range that this device is intended for, Q values are in excess of 100. In addition, an 8.4:1 tuning ratio has been achieved with continuous tuning over a 1.4: 11.9-pF range. When implemented into a two-pole UHF filter, tuning over the entire 225-400-MHz range was achieved with a loss under 6.2 dB. 22. Studies of electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves using AMPTE/CCE and dynamics explorer

Abstract

The overall objective of this research is to investigate the generation and propagation of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves in the frequency range from 0.2 to 5 Hz (Pc 1 frequency band). Data used in this research were acquired by the AMPTE/CCE, DE-1, and DE-2 satellites. One of the primary questions addressed in this research is the role which EMIC waves have on the transfer of energy from the equatorial magnetosphere to the ionosphere. The primary result from this research is that some fraction of EMIC waves, generated in the equatorial magnetosphere, are Landau damped in the ionosphere and are therefore a heat source for ionospheric electrons. This result as well as other results are summarized below.

23. Thoracotomy in the management of gestational choriocarcinoma: a clinicopathologic study

Abstract

Background. Pulmonary metastases occur frequently in patients with gestational choriocarcinoma and most of these patients achieve remission with chemotherapy alone. Thus, the indications for surgical intervention are limited, but in appropriately selected patients, resection of a chemotherapy-resistant lung lesion can be curative. Methods. Nine patients with choriocarcinoma metastatic to the lung underwent 11 thoracotomies. The procedure was done in two patients for diagnosis and in seven to remove a resistant focus of tumor in the lung. The excised resistant tumors in six patients were studied histopathologically, immunohistochemically, and by electron microscopic examination (one patient). Results. Six (66.6%) patients achieved complete remission for periods ranging from 3 months to 18 years, and three patients died of their disease. The residual lung nodules in these patients with chemotherapy-resistant tumors were characterized by the presence of large mononucleated tumor cells that showed features intermediate between those of cytotrophoblasts and syncytiotrophoblasts but lacking ultrastructural and immunohistochemical features of the intermediate trophoblasts seen in placental site tumors. Conclusions. A major role for operative treatment of chemotherapy-resistant choriocarcinoma in the lung is suggested by the observation that some of the resistant tumors contain a unique variant of trophoblastic cells that show a decreased sensitivity to chemotherapy but are amenable to surgical resection. 24. Studies of electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves using AMPTE/CCE and Dynamics Explorer

Abstract

The principal activity during the past six months has involved the analysis of ion cyclotron waves recorded from DE-2 using the magnetic field experiment and electric field experiment. The results of this study have been published in the Geophysical Research Letters (GRL). The primary finding of this paper is that ion cyclotron waves were found to heat electrons, as observed in the DE-2 Langmuir probe data, through a Landau damping process. A second activity, which was started during the last six months, involves the study of large amplitude approximately one Hz electric and magnetic field oscillations recorded in the nightside auroral zone at substorm onset. Work is under way to determine the properties of these waves and investigate any association these waves may have with the substorm initiation process. A third activity under way involves a comprehensive study of ion cyclotron waves recorded at ionospheric altitudes by DE-2. This study will be an extension of the work reported in the GRL paper and will involve a larger sampling of wave events. This paper will focus on wave properties at ionospheric altitudes. A fourth activity involves a more in-depth analysis of the acceleration mechanisms and the resulting electron distributions based on the observations presented in the GRL paper.

26. Cellular schwannoma: a clinicopathologic study of 57 patients and 58 tumors

Abstract

The cellular schwannoma can be a troublesome pathologic diagnosis. Roughly a quarter of cellular schwannomas may receive a diagnosis of malignant from a pathologist, and yet evidence is accumulating to suggest that these tumors are benign. Cellular schwannoma may be confirmed to arise from Schwann cells (which create the sheath of peripheral nerves) by immunocytochemical techniques and by electron microscopy. The cellular schwannoma does not contain, however, the Verocay bodies that are a common feature in the classic schwannoma. (Verocay bodies are groups of fibrils surrounded by palisaded nuclei.) A review of 58 cellular schwannomas in 57 patients revealed that bone erosion, hypercellularity, nuclear polymorphism, and other features usually associated with cancer are common. In the present series, such features led to a diagnosis of cancer in 28 percent of the cases. Nevertheless, not a single patient developed a metastatic tumor or died of tumor. Local recurrence, however, was observed in 3 of 35 patients who were followed for an average of 7 years. The authors indicate that the pathologic distinction between cellular schwannoma and high-grade malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors is straightforward, since the latter have characteristic features, which include areas of necrosis abruptly rimmed by hyperchromatic (densely stained) and mitotically active anaplastic cells. Although the distinction between a cellular schwannoma and a low-grade malignant nerve sheath tumor is more difficult, the distinction is nonetheless important as a proper diagnosis of cellular schwannoma will save the patient from unnecessary chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and also eliminate the sacrifice of nerve function by the surgical removal of a tumor erroneously thought to be malignant. Abstract

Commercial space activities that utilize large space-based constellations provide a new and cost effective opportunity to acquire multi-point observations. Previously, a custom designed space-based constellation, while technically feasible, would require a substantial monetary investment. However, commercial industry has now been entertaining the concept of hosting payloads on their space-based constellations resulting in low-cost access to space. Examples include the low Earth orbit Iridium Next constellation as well as communication satellites in geostationary orbit. In some of these constellations, data distribution can be provided in real time, a feature relevant to applications in the areas of space weather and disaster monitoring. Future small-satellite constellations and hosting on commercial satellite constellations also provide outstanding opportunities for Earth remote sensing applications. In particular, we consider multi-spectral weather sensors to address gaps in future terrestrial weather needs. We will present concepts for weather sensors that are very compact, low mass, and low power, and so they can easily be accommodated on micro-satellites and hosted payloads. In this construct, compact weather sensors enable a cost effective solution to terrestrial weather requirements using small satellite or hosted payloads.

Abstract

Thin, uniform polymer coatings applied in water base normally impossible to charge. Electrostatic sprayer modified so applies coatings suspended or dissolved in electrically conductive liquids. Nozzle and gun constructed of nonconductive molded plastic. Liquid passageway made long enough electrical leakage through it low. Coaxial hose for liquid built of polytetrafluoroethylene tube, insulating sleeve, and polyurethane jacket. Sprayer provided with insulated seal at gun-to-hose connection, nonconductive airhose, pressure tank electrically isolated from ground, and special nozzle electrode. Supply of atomizing air reduced so particle momentum controlled by electrostatic field more effectively. Developed to apply water-base polyurethane coating to woven, shaped polyester fabric. Coating provides pressure seal for fabric, which is part of spacesuit. Also useful for applying waterproof, decorative, or protective coatings to fabrics for use on Earth.

Abstract

Sweden's Viking satellite, launched in February 1986, has been conducting plasma process observations in the earth magnetosphere and auroral regions; the U.S.-supplied APL Magnetic Field Experiment aboard Viking is used to determine field-aligned Birkeland current characteristics in previously unsampled regions of near-earth space. The Magnetic Field Experiment has an equivalent spatial resolution of 12 m in the auroral ionosphere when making measurements near apogee. The purposes of Viking's other instruments and their relationship to the Magnetic Field Experiment are discussed.

Abstract

Simulations are performed using a multiple temperature gas model to investigate translational non-equilibrium effects in a rapid expansion of a high temperature argon gas cloud into a rarefied atmosphere. A set of continuum conservation equations based on kinetic theory, which includes anisotropic forms for the temperature, pressure and speed ratio, are solved numerically using a flux splitting scheme for the inviscid fluxes and a central difference scheme for the viscous fluxes in a time accurate manner. Results obtained for the initial expansion of the spherical gas cloud from a high density source condition show that translational non-equilibrium exists in the shock front region which propagates into the ambient atmosphere. 44. Voice-Activated Lightweight Reacher to Assist with Upper Extremity Movement Limitations: A Case Study.

Abstract

The focus of this research was to design a functional and user-friendly reacher for people with spinal cord injuries (SCIs). Engineering advancements have taken assistive robotics to new dimensions. Technologies such as wheelchair robotics and myo-electronically controlled systems have opened up a wide range of new applications to assist people with physical disabilities. Similarly, exo-skeletal limbs and body suits have provided new foundations from which technologies can aid function. Unfortunately, these devices have issues of usability, weight, and discomfort with donning. The Smart Assistive Reacher Arm (SARA) system, developed in this research, is a voice-activated, lightweight, mobile device that can be used when needed. SARA was built to help overcome daily reach challenges faced by individuals with limited arm and hand movement capability, such as people with cervical level 5-6 (C5-6) SCI. This article shows that a functional reacher arm with voice control can be beneficial for this population. Comparison study with healthy participants and an SCI participant shows that, when using SARA, a person with SCI can perform simple reach and grasp tasks independently, without someone else’s help.
