Gaussian processes (GPs) are non-parametric probabilistic regression models that are popular due to their flexibility, data efficiency, and well-calibrated uncertainty estimates. However, standard GP models assume homoskedastic Gaussian noise, while many real-world applications are subject to non-Gaussian corruptions. Variants of GPs that are more robust to alternative noise models have been proposed, and entail significant trade-offs between accuracy and robustness, and between computational requirements and theoretical guarantees. In this work, we propose and study a GP model that achieves robustness against sparse outliers by inferring data-point-specific noise levels with a sequential selection procedure maximizing the log marginal likelihood that we refer to as relevance pursuit. We show, surprisingly, that the model can be parameterized such that the associated log marginal likelihood is strongly concave in the data-point-specific noise variances, a property rarely found in either robust regression objectives or GP marginal likelihoods. This in turn implies the weak submodularity of the corresponding subset selection problem, and thereby proves approximation guarantees for the proposed algorithm. A distributed quantum computing network requires a quantum communication channel between spatially separated processing units. In superconducting circuits, such a channel can be implemented based on propagating microwave photons to encode and transfer quantum information between an emitter and a receiver. However, traveling microwave photons can be lost during the transmission, leading to the failure of information transfer. Heralding protocols can be used to detect such photon losses. In this work, we propose such a protocol and experimentally demonstrate a frequency-bin encoding method of microwave photonic modes using superconducting circuits. We deterministically encode the quantum information from a superconducting qubit by simultaneously emitting its information into two photonic modes at different frequencies, with a process fidelity of 90.4%. The frequency-bin-encoded photonic modes can be used, at the receiver processor, to detect the occurrence of photon loss. Our work thus provides a reliable method to implement high-fidelity quantum state transfer in a distributed quantum computing network, incorporating error detection to enhance performance and accuracy.

We perform a systematic study of the base change conductor for Jacobians. Through the lens of intersection theory and Deligne's Riemann-Roch theorem, we present novel computational approaches for both the tame and wild parts of the base change conductor. Our key results include a general formula of the tame part, as well as a computation of the wild part in terms of Galois quotients of semistable models of the curves. We treat in detail the case of potential good reduction when the quotient only has weak wild quotient singularities, relying on recent advances by Obus and Wewers., Comment: 44 pages

This study showcases the digitalization of L\"ofstad Castle in Sweden to contribute to preserving its heritage values. The castle and its collections are deteriorating due to an inappropriate indoor climate. To address this, thirteen cloud-connected sensor boxes, equipped with 84 sensors, were installed throughout the main building, from the basement to the attic, to continuously monitor various indoor environmental parameters. The collected extensive multi-parametric data form the basis for creating a parametric digital twin of the building. The digital twin and detailed data analytics offer a deeper understanding of indoor climate and guide the adoption of appropriate heating and ventilation strategies. The results revealed the need to address high humidity problems in the basement and on the ground floor, such as installing vapor barriers. Opportunities for adopting energy-efficient heating and ventilation strategies on the upper floors were also highlighted. The digitalization solution and findings are not only applicable to L\"ofstad Castle but also provide valuable guidance for the conservation of other historic buildings facing similar challenges., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

The challenges of operating qubits in a cryogenic environment point to a looming bottleneck for large-scale quantum processors, limited by the number of input-output connections. Classical processors solve this problem via multiplexing; however, on-chip multiplexing circuits have not been shown to have similar benefits for cryogenic quantum devices. In this work we integrate classical circuitry and Si/SiGe quantum devices on the same chip, providing a test bed for qubit scale-up. Our method uses on-chip field-effect transistors (FETs) to multiplex a grid of work zones, achieving a nearly tenfold reduction in control wiring. We leverage this set-up to probe device properties across a 6x6mm$^2$ array of 16 Hall bars. We successfully operate the array at cryogenic temperatures and high magnetic fields where the quantum Hall effect is observed. Building upon these results, we propose a vision for readout in a large-scale silicon quantum processor with a limited number of control connections.

This paper establishes BCOV-type genus one mirror symmetry for the intersections of two cubics in $\mathbb{P}^5$. The proof applies previous constructions of the mirror family by the second author and computations of genus one Gromov-Witten invariants by A. Popa. The approach adapts the strategy used for hypersurfaces, as developed by the first author and collaborators, but addresses the distinct geometry involved. A key feature is a systematic usage of toric techniques and related computer aided computations.

The paper considers an inverse problem of reconstructing the spatially distributed complex dielectric permittivity function using backscattered data of the electric field in the frequency domain. We develop iterative algorithm for reconstruction of this function. Numerical example show the performance of the proposed algorithm in 2D. Additionally, we present at the first time the new prototype of the device for the malignant melanoma detection which is modelled in HFSS/Ansys. The non-stoichiometric Fe$_2$P-type (FeMnP$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$)$_{1-x}$(FeV)$_{x}$ alloys ( $x=0, 0.01$, $0.02$, and $0.03$) have been investigated as potential candidates for magnetic refrigeration near room temperature. The magnetic ordering temperature decreases with increasing FeV concentration, $x$, which can be ascribed to decreased ferromagnetic coupling strength between the magnetic atoms. The strong magnetoelastic coupling in these alloys results in large values of the isothermal entropy change ($\Delta S_M$); $15.7$ J/kgK, at $2$ T magnetic field for the $x = 0$ alloy. $\Delta S_M$ decreases with increasing $x$. Results from M{\"o}ssbauer spectroscopy reveal that the average hyperfine field (in the ferromagnetic state) and average center shift (in the paramagnetic state) have the same decreasing trend as $\Delta S_M$. The thermal hysteresis ($\Delta T_{hyst}$) of the magnetic phase transition decreases with increasing $x$, while the mechanical stability of the alloys improves due to the reduced lattice volume change across the magnetoelastic phase transition. The adiabatic temperature change $\Delta T_{ad}$, which highly depends on $\Delta T_{hyst}$, is $1.7$ K at $1.9$ T applied field for the $x = 0.02$ alloy.

Context: The details of the mass-loss process in the late stages of low- and intermediate-mass stellar evolution are not well understood, in particular its dependence on stellar parameters. Mira variables are highly suitable targets for studying this mass-loss process. Aims: We follow up on our earlier finding that a near-to-mid-infrared colour vs. pulsation period diagram shows two sequences of Miras that can be distinguished by the third dredge-up (3DUP) indicator technetium in those stars. While IR colours are good indicators of the dust mass-loss rate (MLR) from Miras, no corresponding sequences have been found using the gas MLR. However, investigations of the gas MLR have been hampered by data limitations. We aim to alleviate these limitations with new observational data. Methods: We present new optical spectra of a well-selected sample of Miras. We searched these spectra for absorption lines of Tc and other 3DUP indicators and combined our findings with gas MLRs and expansion velocities from the literature. Furthermore, we analyse WISE MIR data and compare the broadband SEDs of Miras with and without Tc. Results: We find no systematic difference in gas MLRs between Miras with and without Tc. However, the gas envelopes of Tc-poor Miras appear to have a higher expansion velocity than those of Miras with Tc. Furthermore, our analysis of the IR photometry strongly corroborates the earlier finding that Tc-poor Miras have a higher MIR emission than Tc-rich ones, by as much as a factor of two. We model the IR colours with DARWIN and stationary wind models and conclude that Miras with and without Tc have different dust content or properties. Conclusions: We discuss several hypotheses of the observations and conclude that the reduction of free oxygen by 3DUP of carbon and iron-depleted dust grains in Tc-rich stars are the most convincing explanations for our observations., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Magnetoelasticity plays a crucial role in numerous magnetic phenomena, including magnetocalorics, magnon excitation via acoustic waves, and ultrafast demagnetization/Einstein-de Haas effect. Despite a long-standing discussion on anisotropy-mediated magnetoelastic interactions of relativistic origin, including \textit{ab-initio} calculations, the exchange-mediated magnetoelastic parameters within an atomistic framework have only recently begun to be investigated. As a result, many of their behaviors and values for real materials remain poorly understood. Therefore, by using a proposed simple modification of the embedded cluster approach that reduces the computational complexity, we critically analyze the properties of exchange-mediated spin-lattice coupling parameters for elemental $3d$ ferromagnets (bcc Fe, fcc Ni, and fcc Co), comparing methods used for their extraction and relating their realistic values to symmetry considerations and orbitally-decomposed contributions. Additionally, we investigate the effects of noncollinearity (spin temperature) and applied pressure on these parameters. For Fe, we find that single-site rotations, associated with spin temperatures around $\sim100$ K, induce significant modifications, particularly in Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-type couplings; in contrast, such interactions in Co and Ni remain almost configuration independent. Moreover, we demonstrate a notable change in the exchange-mediated magnetoelastic constants for Fe under isostatic compression. Finally, the conversion between atomistic, quantum-mechanically derived parameters and the phenomenological magnetoelastic theory is discussed, which can be an useful tool towards larger and more realistic dynamics simulations involving coupled subsystems.

GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ has recently drawn significant attention as a centrosymmetric magnet capable of hosting a short period skyrmion square lattice (SkL) in the absence of Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction (DMI). In this system, Gd atoms are arranged on a square lattice forming 2D layers separated by the Ru-Si network in the out-of-plane direction. In the low T regime, the ground state for zero/smaller external magnetic field ($\vec{B}_\perp$) along the out-of-plane direction is a single helical state, characterized by one modulation vector $\vec{Q}$ along one of the in-plane directions of the square lattice. For some critical range of higher $\vec{B}_\perp$, the helical state transforms into a SkL state that can be viewed as the overlap of two helical states defined with $\vec{Q}$ vectors in two in-plane directions, with the same magnitude of $\vec{Q}$ as for the single helical state. So far in the literature, importance has been given to this in-plane $\vec{Q}$ vector in understanding the magnetic phases of the system, considering the out-of-plane magnetic coupling to be weak, which therefore has been ignored. Our calculation of the Gd-Gd magnetic exchange interactions ($J_{ij}$) however shows the strongest $J_{ij}$ to occur between second neighbour Gd atoms along the [111] body-diagonal direction of the unit cell. This along with the body-centred tetragonal structure of the Gd sublattice points to the presence of a hitherto ignored modulation vector, $\vec{Q}_{[111]}$, along the [111] direction in the helical ground state. Atomistic Spin Dynamics (ASD) simulations show the importance of this interaction. This interlayer modulation vector $\vec{Q}_{[111]}$, along with the intralayer $\vec{Q}_{[100]}$, determines the total magnetic ordering of the system. Bayesian optimization (BO) is a powerful approach to sample-efficient optimization of black-box functions. However, in settings with very few function evaluations, a successful application of BO may require transferring information from historical experiments. These related experiments may not have exactly the same tunable parameters (search spaces), motivating the need for BO with transfer learning for heterogeneous search spaces. In this paper, we propose two methods for this setting. The first approach leverages a Gaussian process (GP) model with a conditional kernel to transfer information between different search spaces. Our second approach treats the missing parameters as hyperparameters of the GP model that can be inferred jointly with the other GP hyperparameters or set to fixed values. We show that these two methods perform well on several benchmark problems.

Path-integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) simulations are crucial for accurately capturing nuclear quantum effects in materials. However, their computational intensity and reliance on multiple software packages often limit their applicability at large scales. Here, we present an integration of PIMD methods, including thermostatted ring-polymer molecular dynamics (TRPMD), into the open-source GPUMD package, combined with highly accurate and efficient machine-learned neuroevolution potential (NEP) models. This approach achieves almost the accuracy of first-principles calculations with the computational efficiency of empirical potentials, enabling large-scale atomistic simulations that incorporate nuclear quantum effects. We demonstrate the efficacy of the combined NEP-PIMD approach by examining various thermal properties of diverse materials, including lithium hydride (LiH), three porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), liquid water, and elemental aluminum. For LiH, our NEP-PIMD simulations successfully capture the isotope effect, reproducing the experimentally observed dependence of the lattice parameter on the reduced mass. For MOFs, our results reveal that achieving good agreement with experimental data requires consideration of both nuclear quantum effects and dispersive interactions. For water, our PIMD simulations capture the significant impact of nuclear quantum effects on its microscopic structure. For aluminum, the TRPMD method effectively captures thermal expansion and phonon properties, aligning well with quantum mechanical predictions. Sea ice is a key element of the global Earth system, with a major impact on global climate and regional weather. Unfortunately, accurate sea ice modeling is challenging due to the diversity and complexity of underlying physics happening there, and a relative lack of ground truth observations. This is especially true for the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), which is the area where sea ice is affected by incoming ocean waves. Waves contribute to making the area dynamic, and due to the low survival time of the buoys deployed there, the MIZ is challenging to monitor. In 2022-2023, we released 79 OpenMetBuoys (OMBs) around Svalbard, both in the MIZ and the ocean immediately outside of it. OMBs are affordable enough to be deployed in large number, and gather information about drift (GPS position) and waves (1-dimensional elevation spectrum). This provides data focusing on the area around Svalbard with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. We expect that this will allow to perform validation and calibration of ice models and remote sensing algorithms.

It is a major problem in analysis on metric spaces to understand when a metric space is quasisymmetric to a space with strong analytic structure, a so-called Loewner space. A conjecture of Kleiner, recently disproven by Anttila and the second author, proposes a combinatorial sufficient condition. The counterexamples constructed are all topologically one dimensional, and the sufficiency of Kleiner's condition remains open for most other examples. A separate question of Kleiner and Schioppa, apparently unrelated to the problem above, asks about the existence of "analytically $1$-dimensional planes": metric measure spaces quasisymmetric to the Euclidean plane but supporting a $1$-dimensional analytic structure in the sense of Cheeger. In this paper, we construct an example for which the conclusion of Kleiner's conjecture is not known to hold. We show that either this conclusion fails in our example or there exists an "analytically $1$-dimensional plane". Thus, our construction either yields a new counterexample to Kleiner's conjecture, different in kind from those of Anttila and the second author, or a resolution to the problem of Kleiner--Schioppa., Comment: 33 pages

We introduce iterated graph systems which yield fractal spaces through a projective sequence of self-similar graphs. Our construction yields new examples of self-similar fractals, such as the pentagonal Sierpi\'nski carpet and a pillow-space, and it yields a new framework to study potential theory on many standard examples in the literature, including generalized Sierpi\'nski carpets. We demonstrate that a fractal arising from an iterated graph system satisfying mild geometric conditions and having enough reflection symmetries, satisfies the combinatorial Loewner property (CLP) of Bourdon and Kleiner. For certain exponents, one can also obtain the conductive homogeneity condition of Kigami. This shows, in a precise sense, that self-similarity and sufficient symmetry yields CLP. Furthermore, we show that our examples satisfy important asymptotic behaviors of discrete moduli. In particular, we establish the so-called super-multiplicative inequality for our examples - which when $p=2$ plays a crucial role in the study of Dirichlet forms and random walks on fractals. This implies the super-multiplicativity bound also for many fractals for which it was not known before, such as the Menger sponge. A particular feature here is using replacement flows and the notion of a flow basis. This yields a simpler way to establish many known estimates, and allows us to prove several new ones. Latching techniques are widely used to enhance readout of qubits. These methods require precise tuning of multiple tunnel rates, which can be challenging to achieve under realistic experimental conditions, such as when a qubit is coupled to a single reservoir. Here, we present a method for single-shot measurement of a quantum dot qubit with a single reservoir using a latched-readout scheme. Our approach involves pulsing a barrier gate to dynamically control qubit-to-reservoir tunnel rates, a method that is readily applicable to the latched readout of various spin-based qubits. We use this method to enable qubit state latching and to reduce the qubit reset time in measurements of coherent Larmor oscillations of a Si/SiGe quantum dot hybrid qubit., Comment: 6 pages, including supplemental materials

We present Trust, a general, type- and memory-safe alternative to locking in concurrent programs. Instead of synchronizing multi-threaded access to an object of type T with a lock, the programmer may place the object in a Trust. The object is then no longer directly accessible. Instead a designated thread, the object's trustee, is responsible for applying any requested operations to the object, as requested via the Trust API. Locking is often said to offer a limited throughput per lock. Trust is based on delegation, a message-passing technique which does not suffer this per-lock limitation. Instead, per-object throughput is limited by the capacity of the object's trustee, which is typically considerably higher. Our evaluation shows Trust consistently and considerably outperforming locking where lock contention exists, with up to 22x higher throughput in microbenchmarks, and 5-9x for a home grown key-value store, as well as memcached, in situations with high lock contention. Moreover, Trust is competitive with locks even in the absence of lock contention.

In the initial stages of ITER operation, ELM mitigation systems need to be commissioned. This requires controlled flat-top operation in type-I ELMy H-mode regimes. Hydrogen or helium plasma discharges are used exclusively in these stages to ensure negligible production of neutrons from fusion reactions. With the expected higher L-H power threshold of hydrogen and helium plasmas compared to corresponding D and D/T plasmas, it is uncertain whether available auxiliary power systems are sufficient to operate in stable type-I ELMy H-mode. This has been investigated using integrated core and edge/SOL/divertor modelling with JINTRAC. Assuming that the L-H power threshold is well captured by the Martin08 scaling law, the presented simulations have found that 30 MW of ECRH power is likely required for the investigated hydrogen plasma scenarios, rather than the originally planned 20 MW in the 2016 Staged Approach ITER Baseline. However, past experiments have shown that a small helium fraction (~10 %) can considerably reduce the hydrogen plasma L-H power threshold. Assuming that these results extrapolate to ITER operation regimes, the 7.5MA/2.65T hydrogen plasma scenario is likely to access stable type-I ELMy H-mode operation also at 20 MW of ECRH., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

Alongside magnetic reconnection, turbulence is another fundamental nonlinear plasma phenomenon that plays a key role in energy transport and conversion in space and astrophysical plasmas. From a numerical, theoretical, and observational point of view there is a long history of exploring the interplay between these two phenomena in space plasma environments; however, recent high-resolution, multi-spacecraft observations have ushered in a new era of understanding this complex topic. The interplay between reconnection and turbulence is both complex and multifaceted, and can be viewed through a number of different interrelated lenses - including turbulence acting to generate current sheets that undergo magnetic reconnection (turbulence-driven reconnection), magnetic reconnection driving turbulent dynamics in an environment (reconnection-driven turbulence) or acting as an intermediate step in the excitation of turbulence, and the random diffusive/dispersive nature of magnetic field lines embedded in turbulent fluctuations enabling so-called stochastic reconnection. In this paper, we review the current state of knowledge on these different facets of the interplay between turbulence and reconnection in the context of collisionless plasmas, such as those found in many near-Earth astrophysical environments, from a theoretical, numerical, and observational perspective. Particular focus is given to several key regions in Earth's magnetosphere - Earth's magnetosheath, magnetotail, and Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices on the magnetopause flanks - where NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission has been providing new insights on the topic., Comment: Chapter 2.2 of ISSI Book on Magnetic Reconnection, submitted to Space Science Reviews

The Talbot self-imaging phenomenon is a fundamental interference effect that is natural to all waves with a periodic structure. We theoretically and experimentally study the Talbot effect for optical waves in the transverse angular domain using whispering-gallery modes of step-index multimode fibers, which carry a high orbital angular momentum and fulfill the required quadratic dispersion relation. By using the complex interference along the core-cladding interface of these fibers, we experimentally demonstrate that the high-order fractional Talbot effect can be used to implement 9- and 30-port beamsplitters using only off-the-shelf components in a compact arrangement. In addition, we show that the beamsplitters can be efficiently interfaced with single-mode fibers, such that our work not only extends the recent developments on the angular Talbot effect to widely available step-index multimode fibers, but also demonstrates a powerful application as a signal multiplexer, which becomes more compact as the number of channels is increased., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We perform readout of a quantum-dot hybrid qubit coupled to a superconducting resonator through a parametric, longitudinal interaction mechanism. The ability to generate entangled states of light is a key primitive for quantum communication and distributed quantum computation. Continuously driven sources, including those based on spontaneous parametric downconversion, are usually probabilistic, whereas deterministic sources require accurate timing of the control fields. Here, we experimentally generate entangled photonic modes by continuously exciting a quantum emitter, a superconducting qubit, with a coherent drive, taking advantage of mode matching in the time and frequency domain. Using joint quantum state tomography and logarithmic negativity, we show that entanglement is generated between modes extracted from the two sidebands of the resonance fluorescence spectrum. Because the entangled photonic modes are perfectly orthogonal, they can be transferred into distinct quantum memories. Our approach can be utilized to distribute entanglement at a high rate in various physical platforms, with applications in waveguide quantum electrodynamics, distributed quantum computing, and quantum networks.

Toroidal classification and geometric duality in quantum spin systems is presented. Through our classification and duality, we reveal that various bipartite quantum features in magnon-systems can manifest equivalently in both bipartite ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials, based upon the availability of relevant Hamiltonian parameters. Additionally, the results highlight the antiferromagnetic regime as an ultra-fast dual counterpart to the ferromagnetic regime, both exhibiting identical capabilities for quantum spintronics and technological applications. Concrete illustrations are provided, demonstrating how splitting and squeezing types of two-mode magnon quantum correlations can be realized across ferro- and antiferromagnetic regimes., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The combinatorial Loewner property was introduced by Bourdon and Kleiner as a quasisymmetrically invariant substitute for the Loewner property for general fractals and boundaries of hyperbolic groups. While the Loewner property is somewhat restrictive, the combinatorial Loewner property is very generic -- Bourdon and Kleiner showed that many familiar fractals and group boundaries satisfy it. If $X$ is quasisymmetric to a Loewner space, it has the combinatorial Loewner property. Kleiner conjectured in 2006 that the converse to this holds for self-similar fractals -- the hope being that this would lead to the existence of many exotic Loewner spaces. We disprove this conjecture and give the first examples of spaces which are self-similar, combinatorially Loewner and which are not quasisymmetric to Loewner spaces. In the process we introduce a self-similar replacement rule, called iterated graph systems (IGS), which is inspired by the work of Laakso. This produces a new rich class of fractal spaces, where closed form computations of potentials and their conformal dimensions are possible. These spaces exhibit a rich class of behaviors from analysis on fractals in regards to diffusions, Sobolev spaces, energy measures and conformal dimensions. These behaviors expand on the known examples of Cantor sets, gaskets, Vicsek sets, and the often too difficult carpet-like spaces. Especially the counterexamples to Kleiner's conjecture that arise from this construction are interesting, since they open up the possibility to study the new realm of combinatorially Loewner spaces that are not quasisymmetric to Loewner spaces., Comment: 54 pages, comments welcome

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

High-dimensional Bayesian optimization (BO) tasks such as molecular design often require 10,000 function evaluations before obtaining meaningful results. While methods like sparse variational Gaussian processes (SVGPs) reduce computational requirements in these settings, the underlying approximations result in suboptimal data acquisitions that slow the progress of optimization. In this paper we modify SVGPs to better align with the goals of BO: targeting informed data acquisition rather than global posterior fidelity. Using the framework of utility-calibrated variational inference, we unify GP approximation and data acquisition into a joint optimization problem, thereby ensuring optimal decisions under a limited computational budget. Our approach can be used with any decision-theoretic acquisition function and is compatible with trust region methods like TuRBO. We derive efficient joint objectives for the expected improvement and knowledge gradient acquisition functions in both the standard and batch BO settings. Our approach outperforms standard SVGPs on high-dimensional benchmark tasks in control and molecular design.

We present a numerical scheme for the solution of the initial-value problem for the ``bad'' Boussinesq equation. The accuracy of the scheme is tested by comparison with exact soliton solutions as well as with recently obtained asymptotic formulas for the solution., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials have attracted substantial interest due to their remarkable excitonic, optical, electrical, and mechanical properties, which are highly dependent on their crystal structure. Controlling the crystal structure of these materials is essential for fine-tuning their performance, $\textit{e.g.}$, linear and nonlinear optical, as well as charge transport properties. While various phase-switching TMD materials, like molybdenum telluride (MoTe$_2$), are available, their transitions are often irreversible. Here, we investigate the mechanism of a light-induced reversible phase transition in mono- and bilayer flakes of rhenium disulfide (ReS$_2$). Our observations, based on scanning transmission electron microscopy, nonlinear spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, reveal a transition from the ground T$''$ (double distorted T) to the metastable H$'$ (distorted H) phase under femtosecond laser irradiation or influence of highly-energetic electrons. We show that the formation of sulfur vacancies facilitates this phenomenon. Our findings pave the way towards actively manipulating the crystal structure of ReS$_2$ and possibly its heterostructures.

When the marginal causal effect comparing the same treatment pair is available from multiple trials, we wish to transport all results to make inference on the target population effect. To account for the differences between populations, statistical analysis is often performed controlling for relevant variables. However, when transportability assumptions are placed on conditional causal effects, rather than the distribution of potential outcomes, we need to carefully choose these effect measures. In particular, we present identifiability results in two cases: target population average treatment effect for a continuous outcome and causal mean ratio for a positive outcome. We characterize the semiparametric efficiency bounds of the causal effects under the respective transportability assumptions and propose estimators that are doubly robust against model misspecifications. We highlight an important discussion on the tension between the non-collapsibility of conditional effects and the variational independence induced by transportability in the case of multiple source trials.

We consider the problem of indirect comparison, where a treatment arm of interest is absent by design in the target randomized control trial (RCT) but available in a source RCT. The identifiability of the target population average treatment effect often relies on conditional transportability assumptions. However, it is a common concern whether all relevant effect modifiers are measured and controlled for. We highlight a new proximal identification result in the presence of shifted, unobserved effect modifiers based on proxies: an adjustment proxy in both RCTs and an additional reweighting proxy in the source RCT. We propose an estimator which is doubly-robust against misspecifications of the so-called bridge functions and asymptotically normal under mild consistency of the nuisance models. An alternative estimator is presented to accommodate missing outcomes in the source RCT, which we then apply to conduct a proximal indirect comparison analysis using two weight management trials.

The quantified Boolean formula (QBF) problem is an important decision problem generally viewed as the archetype for PSPACE-completeness. Many problems of central interest in AI are in general not included in NP, e.g., planning, model checking, and non-monotonic reasoning, and for such problems QBF has successfully been used as a modelling tool. However, solvers for QBF are not as advanced as state of the art SAT solvers, which has prevented QBF from becoming a universal modelling language for PSPACE-complete problems. A theoretical explanation is that QBF (as well as many other PSPACE-complete problems) lacks natural parameters} guaranteeing fixed-parameter tractability (FPT). In this paper we tackle this problem and consider a simple but overlooked parameter: the number of existentially quantified variables. This natural parameter is virtually unexplored in the literature which one might find surprising given the general scarcity of FPT algorithms for QBF. Via this parameterization we then develop a novel FPT algorithm applicable to QBF instances in conjunctive normal form (CNF) of bounded clause length. We complement this by a W[1]-hardness result for QBF in CNF of unbounded clause length as well as sharper lower bounds for the bounded arity case under the (strong) exponential-time hypothesis.

In this paper, we introduce the notion of spectral genus $\widetilde{p}_{g}$ of a germ of an isolated hypersurface singularity $(\mathbb{C}^{n+1}, 0) \to (\mathbb{C}, 0)$, defined as a sum of small exponents of monodromy eigenvalues. The number of these is equal to the geometric genus $p_{g}$, and hence $\widetilde{p}_g$ can be considered as a secondary invariant to it. We then explore a secondary version of the Durfee conjecture on $p_{g}$, and we predict an inequality between $\widetilde{p}_{g}$ and the Milnor number $\mu$, to the effect that $$\widetilde{p}_g\leq\frac{\mu-1}{(n+2)!}.$$ We provide evidence by confirming our conjecture in several cases, including homogeneous singularities and singularities with large Newton polyhedra, and quasi-homogeneous or irreducible curve singularities. We also show that a weaker inequality follows from Durfee's conjecture, and hence holds for quasi-homogeneous singularities and curve singularities. Our conjecture is shown to relate closely to the asymptotic behavior of the holomorphic analytic torsion of the sheaf of holomorphic functions on a degeneration of projective varieties, potentially indicating deeper geometric and analytic connections., Comment: 29 pages. The impact of the local chemical environment on the Gilbert damping in the binary alloy Fe$_{100-x}$Co$_{x}$ is investigated, using computations based on density functional theory. By varying the alloy composition x as well as Fe/Co atom positions we reveal that the effective damping of the alloy is highly sensitive to the nearest neighbor environment, especially to the amount of Co and the average distance between Co-Co atoms at nearest neighbor sites. Both lead to a significant local increase (up to an order of magnitude) of the effective Gilbert damping, originating mainly from variations of the density of states at the Fermi energy. In a global perspective (i.e., making a configuration average for a real material), those differences in damping are masked by statistical averages. When low-temperature explicit atomistic dynamics simulations are performed, the impact of short-range disorder on local dynamics is observed to also alter the overall relaxation rate. Our results illustrate the possibility of local chemical engineering of the Gilbert damping, which may stimulate the study of new ways to tune and control materials aiming for spintronics applications.

The efforts on the development, standardization and improvements to communication systems towards 5G Advanced and 6G are on track to provide benefits such as an unprecedented level of connectivity and performance, enabling a diverse range of vertical services. The full integration of non-terrestrial components into 6G plays a pivotal role in realizing this paradigm shift towards ubiquitous communication and global coverage. However, this integration into 6G brings forth a set of its own challenges, particularly in Radio Access Technologies (RATs). To this end, this paper comprehensively discusses those challenges at different levels of RATs and proposes the corresponding potential emerging advancements in the realm of 6G NTN. In particular, the focus is on advancing the prospective aspects of Radio Resource Management (RRM), spectral coexistence in terrestrial and non-terrestrial components and flexible waveform design solutions to combat the impediments. YMn$_6$Sn$_6$ consists of two types of Mn-based kagome planes stacked along $c$-axis having a complex magnetic interactions. We report a spin reconstruction in YMn$_6$Sn$_6$ from ferromagnet (FM) into a combination of two incommensurate spin spirals (SSs) originating from two different type of Mn kagome planes driven by frustrated magnetic exchanges along the $c$-axis with inclusion of Hubbard U. The pitch angle and wave vector of the incommensurate SSs are $\sim$89.3$^{\circ}$ and $\sim$ (0 0 0.248) respectively which are in excellent agreement with experiment. We employed an effective model Hamiltonian constructed out of exchange interactions to capture experimentally observed non-equivalent nature of the two incommensurate SSs which also explain FM-SS crossover due to antiferromagntic spin exchange with correlation. We further report the existence of topological magnon with spin-orbit coupling in incommensurate SS phase of YMn$_6$Sn$_6$ by calculating the topological invariants and Berry curvature profile. The location of Dirac magnon in energy landscape at 73 meV matches with another experimental report. We demonstrate the accuracy of our results by highlighting experimental features in YMn$_6$Sn$_6$.

Highly accurate simulations of problems including second derivatives on complex geometries are of primary interest in academia and industry. Consider for example the Navier-Stokes equations or wave propagation problems of acoustic or elastic waves. Current finite difference discretization methods are accurate and efficient on modern hardware, but they lack flexibility when it comes to complex geometries. In this work I extend the continuous summation-by-parts (SBP) framework to second derivatives and combine it with spectral-type SBP operators on Gauss-Lobatto quadrature points to obtain a highly efficient discretization (accurate with respect to runtime) of the Laplacian on complex domains. The resulting Laplace operator is defined on a grid without duplicated points on the interfaces, thus removing unnecessary degrees of freedom in the scheme, and is proven to satisfy a discrete equivalent to Green's first identity. Semi-discrete stability using the new Laplace operator is proven for the acoustic wave equation in 2D. Furthermore, the method can easily be coupled together with traditional finite difference operators using glue-grid interpolation operators, resulting in a method with great practical potential. Two numerical experiments are done on the acoustic wave equation in 2D. First on a problem with an analytical solution, demonstrating the accuracy and efficiency properties of the method. Finally, a more realistic problem is solved, where a complex region of the domain is discretized using the new method and coupled to the rest of the domain discretized using a traditional finite difference method.

We estimate the equilibration rate of a nearly homogeneous Higgs field, displaced from its ground state during the onset of an electroweak phase transition. The computation is carried out with Hard Thermal Loop resummed perturbation theory, and a significant part of the result originates from Bose-enhanced $t$-channel $2\leftrightarrow 2$ scatterings. The expression is shown to be IR finite and gauge independent. We introduce a novel type of neutron interference mirrors based on a chemically homogeneous BxC (x>4) matrix with internal high precision 10B/11B isotope modulation. Simulations predict that these mirrors exhibit very high neutron reflectivities for a small number of bilayer periods. This is experimentally confirmed by neutron reflectivity measurements of mirrors synthesized by ion-assisted magnetron sputter deposition. For example, a 120 nm thick multilayer consisting of just 20 bilayer periods of 10B5.7C/11B5.7C, with a periodicity of 61.5 {\AA}, exhibits a neutron reflectivity of 13 percent at an incidence angle of 4.7 deg for neutrons with a wavelength of 4.825 {\AA}. This is attributed to a high scattering length density contrast between the layers with an interface width <5 {\AA}. Structural analyses by X-ray diffraction, X-ray reflectivity, and transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that the 10B5.7C/11B5.7C multilayer mirrors are composed of amorphous, chemically homogenous B5.7C, without any internal chemical modulation. The data show that 10BxC/11BxC multilayer mirrors have the potential for higher neutron reflectivities at higher q-values using fewer and thinner layers, compared to todays state-of-the-art chemically modulated neutron multilayer mirrors.

Polarized neutron scattering is a very important analysis technique for studies of magnetism, spintronics, and high-sensitivity measurements, among others, offering invaluable information. Yet, the efficiency of such experiments rely on the performance of the polarizing neutron optics to provide high reflectivity and polarization. Presently, state-of-the-art polarizers like Fe/Si supermirrors are not able to polarize neutrons at low scattering angles in a monochromatic beam or able to polarize neutrons with a variety of wavelengths as for a non-monochromatic beam. To overcome this limitation, it is suggested to use Co/Ti multilayers on Ti substrates owing to their favorable scattering length density characteristics. It is shown that this approach enables a wavelength bandwidth several times larger than achievable with state-of-the-art materials on Si or glass substrates. Consequently, enabling the possibility of polarizing neutrons across an extended wavelength range, including those with very high wavelengths.

The concept of scattering length density tuning for improved polarization is investigated for Fe/11B4CTi multilayers and compared to the commonly used Fe/Si system in polarizing multilayer neutron optics. X-ray and neutron reflectivity, magnetization, and neutron polarization have been measured on such multilayers, highlighting differences from conventional Fe/Si multilayers. The multilayer systems were deposited with 25 {\AA} period thickness, a layer thickness ratio of 0.35 and 20 periods, using ion-assisted DC magnetron sputtering. Replacing Si with 11B4CTi for these multilayers showed an increase in reflectivity due to a reduction in interface width. By tuning the ratio between 11B4C and Ti in the non-magnetic layers, a broad range of scattering length density values was achieved, facilitating scattering length density contrast matching between layers for spin-down neutrons, thereby enhancing polarization. These findings demonstrate the potential of Fe/11B4CTi multilayers as a promising option for polarizing neutron optics and highlight the concept of scattering length density tuning in a large range using 11B4CTi.

We present insightful results of a survey on the adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) by university teachers in their teaching activities. The transformation of education by GenAI, particularly large language models (LLMs), has been presenting both opportunities and challenges, including cheating by students. We prepared the online survey according to best practices and the questions were created by the authors, who have pedagogy experience. The survey contained 12 questions and a pilot study was first conducted. The survey was then sent to all teachers in multiple departments across different campuses of the university of interest in Sweden: Lule{\aa} University of Technology. The survey was available in both Swedish and English. The results show that 35 teachers (more than half) use GenAI out of 67 respondents. Preparation is the teaching activity with the most frequency that GenAI is used for and ChatGPT is the most commonly used GenAI. 59% say it has impacted their teaching, however, 55% say there should be legislation around the use of GenAI, especially as inaccuracies and cheating are the biggest concerns., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

State-of-the-art Ni/Ti supermirror neutron optics have limited reflected intensity and a restricted neutron energy range due to the interface width. Incorporating low-neutron-absorbing 11B4C enhances reflectivity and allows for thinner layers to be deposited, with which more efficient supermirrors with higher m-values can be realized. However, incorporating 11B4C reduces the optical contrast, limiting the attainable reflectivity at low scattering vectors, making this approach infeasible. This study explores various approaches to optimize the material design of 11B4C-containing Ni/Ti supermirrors to maintain high reflectivity at low scattering vectors and achieve low interface widths at large scattering vectors. The scattering length density contrast versus interface width is investigated for multilayer periods of 30 {\AA}, 48 {\AA}, and 84 {\AA}, for designs involving pure Ni/Ti multilayers, multilayers with 11B4C co-deposited in Ni and Ti layers, multilayers with 11B4C co-deposited only in Ni layers, and multilayers with 11B4C as thin interlayers between Ni and Ti layers. Our results suggest that a depth-graded hybrid material design by incorporating 11B4C inside the Ni and Ti layers, below approximately 26 {\AA}, and introducing 1.5 {\AA} 11B4C interlayers between the thicker Ni and Ti layers can achieve a higher reflectivity than state-of-the-art Ni/Ti multilayers over the entire scattering vector range.

Detecting quasiparticle tunneling events in superconducting circuits provides information about the population and dynamics of non-equilibrium quasiparticles. Such events can be detected by monitoring changes in the frequency of an offset-charge-sensitive superconducting qubit. This monitoring has so far been performed by Ramsey interferometry assisted by a readout resonator. Here, we demonstrate a quasiparticle detector based on a superconducting qubit directly coupled to a waveguide. We directly measure quasiparticle number parity on the qubit island by probing the coherent scattering of a microwave tone, offering simplicity of operation, fast detection speed, and a large signal-to-noise ratio. We observe tunneling rates between 0.8 and $7~\rm{s}^{-1}$, depending on the average occupation of the detector qubit, and achieve a temporal resolution below $10~\mu\rm{s}$ without a quantum-limited amplifier. Our simple and efficient detector lowers the barrier to perform studies of quasiparticle population and dynamics, facilitating progress in fundamental science, quantum information processing, and sensing.

Square matrices of the form $\widetilde{\mathbf{A}} =\mathbf{A} + \mathbf{e}D \mathbf{f}^*$ are considered. An explicit expression for the inverse is given, provided $\widetilde{\mathbf{A}}$ and $D$ are invertible with $\text{rank}(\widetilde{\mathbf{A}}) =\text{rank}(\mathbf{A})+\text{rank}(\mathbf{e}D \mathbf{f}^*)$. The inverse is presented in two ways, one that uses singular value decomposition and another that depends directly on the components $\mathbf{A}$, $\mathbf{e}$, $\mathbf{f}$ and $D$. Additionally, a matrix determinant lemma for singular matrices follows from the derivations.

Femtosecond laser pulses can be used to induce ultrafast changes of the magnetization in magnetic materials. Several microscopic mechanisms have been proposed to explain the observations, including the transport of ultrashort spin-polarized hot-electrons (SPHE). Such ultrafast spin currents find growing interest because of the recent challenges in ultrafast spintronics however they are only poorly characterized. One of the key challenges is to characterize the spin-polarized ultrafast currents and the microscopic mechanisms behind SPHE induced manipulation of the magnetization, especially in the case of technologically relevant ferrimagnetic alloys. Here, we have used a combined approach using time- and element-resolved X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and theoretical calculations based on atomistic spin-dynamics simulations to address the ultrafast transfer of the angular momentum from spin-polarized currents into ferrimagnetic Fe74Gd26 films and the concomitant reduction of sub-lattice magnetization. Our study shows that using a Co/Pt multilayer as a polarizer in a spin-valve structure, the SPHE drives the demagnetization of the two sub-lattices of the Fe74Gd26 film. This behaviour is explained based on two physical mechanisms, i.e., spin transfer torque and thermal fluctuations induced by the SPHE. We provide a quantitative description of the heat transfer of the ultrashort SPHE pulse to the Fe74Gd26 films, as well as the degree of spin-polarization of the SPHE current density responsible for the observed magnetization dynamics. Our work finally characterizes the spin-polarization of the SPHEs revealing unexpected opposite spin polarization to the Co magnetization, explaining our experimental results., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures

The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) and Landau-Lifshitz (LL) equations play an essential role for describing the dynamics of magnetization in solids. While a quantum analog of the LL dynamics has been proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 147201 (2013)], the corresponding quantum version of LLG remains unknown. Here, we propose such a quantum LLG equation that inherently conserves purity of the quantum state. We examine the quantum LLG dynamics of a dimer consisting of two interacting spin-1/2 particles. Our analysis reveals that, in the case of ferromagnetic coupling, the evolution of initially uncorrelated spins mirrors the classical LLG dynamics. However, in the antiferromagnetic scenario, we observe pronounced deviations from classical behavior, underscoring the unique dynamics of becoming a spinless state, which is non-locally correlated. Moreover, when considering spins that are initially correlated, our study uncovers an unusual form of transient quantum correlation dynamics, which differ significantly from what is typically seen in open quantum systems.
