Abstract

International audience; The amplitude of ozone depletion in the Arctic is monitored every year since 1994 by comparison between total ozone measurements of eight SAOZ / NDACC UV-Vis spectrometers deployed in the Arctic and 3-D chemical transport model simulations in which ozone is considered as a passive tracer. The method allows determining the evolution of the daily rate of the ozone destruction and the amplitude of the cumulative loss at the end of the winter. The amplitude of the destruction varies between 0-10% in relatively warm and short vortex duration years to 25-39% in colder and longer ones. However, as shown by the unprecedented depletion of 39% in 2010/11, the loss is not only dependent on the extension of the vortex in spring, but also on its strength limiting its re-noxification by import of nitrogen oxide species from the outside, as reported by the total NO2 columns measured by the SAOZ instruments. Shown in this presentation will be the evolution of ozone loss and re-noxification in the Arctic during the winter 2016/17 compared to that of previous winters. Compared to observed SAOZ O3 loss, REPROBUS and SLIMCAT CTM simulations are showing differences varying between 0% and 7% depending on the assumptions of vortex strength and isolation. The comparison between ozone loss amplitudes and ozone loss rates, seen each year since 1994 by SAOZ and the two CTM simulations will be followed by a discussion of possible causes in their variable amplitude.

Abstract

The paper makes a convincing case that the Brewer network is capable of detecting enhanced SO2 columns, as observed, e.g., after volcanic eruptions. For this reason, large volcanic eruptions of the past decade have been used to detect and forecast SO2 plumes of volcanic origin using the Brewer and other ground-based networks, aided by satellite, trajectory analysis calculations and modelling. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 654109.

23. Solar UV exposure among outdoor workers in Denmark measured with personal UV-B dosimeters:technical and practical feasibility

Abstract

Background: Exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation is a well-known cause of skin cancer. This is problematic for outdoor workers. In Denmark alone, occupational skin cancer poses a significant health and safety risk for around 400,000 outdoor workers. Objective measures of solar ultraviolet radiation exposure are needed to help resolve this problem. This can be done using personal ultraviolet radiation dosimeters. Methods: We consider technical and practical feasibility of measuring individual solar ultraviolet exposure at work and leisure in professions with different á priori temporal high-level outdoor worktime, using aluminium gallium nitride (AlGaN) photodiode detector based personal UV-B dosimeters. Essential technical specifications including the spectral and angular responsivity of the dosimeters are described and pre-campaign dosimeter calibration applicability is verified. The scale and conduct of dosimeter deployment and campaign in-field measurements including failures and shortcomings affecting overall data collection are presented. Results: Nationwide measurements for more than three hundred and fifty workers from several different professions were collected in the summer of 2016. On average, each worker’s exposure was measured for a 2-week period, which included both work and leisure. Data samples of exposure at work during a Midsummer day show differences across professions. A construction worker received high-level occupational UV exposure most of the working day, except during lunch hour, accumulating to 5.1 SED. A postal service worker was exposed intermittently around noon and in the afternoon, preceded by no exposure forenoon when packing mail, accumulating to 1.6 SED. A crane fitter was exposed only during lunch hour, accumulating to 0.7 SED. These findings are in line with our specialist knowledge as occupational physicians. Objective measures of solar ultraviolet radiation exposure are needed to help resolve this problem. This can be done using personal ultraviolet radiation dosimeters. Methods: We consider technical and practical feasibility of measuring individual solar ultraviolet exposure at work and leisure in professions with different á priori temporal high-level outdoor worktime, using aluminium gallium nitride (AlGaN) photodiode detector based personal UV-B dosimeters. Essential technical specifications including the spectral and angular responsivity of the dosimeters are described and pre-campaign dosimeter calibration applicability is verified. The scale and conduct of dosimeter deployment and campaign in-field measurements including failures and shortcomings affecting overall data collection are presented. Results: Nationwide measurements for more than three hundred and fifty workers from several different professions were collected in the summer of 2016. On average, each worker’s exposure was measured for a 2-week period, which included both work and leisure. Data samples of exposure at work during a Midsummer day show differences across professions. A construction worker received high-level occupational UV exposure most of the working day, except during lunch hour, accumulating to 5.1 SED. A postal service worker was exposed intermittently around noon and in the afternoon, preceded by no exposure forenoon when packing mail, accumulating to 1.6 SED. A crane fitter was exposed only during lunch hour, accumulating to 0.7 SED. These findings are in line with our specialist knowledge as occupational physicians. Abstract

The amplitude of ozone depletion in the Arctic is monitored every year since 1994 by comparison between total ozone measurements of eight SAOZ / NDACC UV-Vis spectrometer stations deployed in the Arctic and 3-D chemical transport model simulations in which ozone is considered as a passive tracer. The method allows determining the evolution of the daily rate of the ozone destruction and the amplitude of the cumulative loss at the end of the winter. The amplitude of the destruction varies between 0-10% in relatively warm and short vortex duration years to 25-39% in colder and longer ones. However, as shown by the unprecedented depletion of 39% in 2010/11, the loss is not only dependent on the extension of the vortex in spring, but also on its strength limiting its renoxification by import of nitrogen oxide species from the outside, as reported by the total NO2 columns measurements available at the same SAOZ stations. Shown in this presentation will be the evolution of ozone loss and renoxification in the Arctic during the winter 2012/13 compared to that of previous winters. The ability of the two REPROBUS and SLIMCAT 3D Chemical Transport Model to reproduce adequately the observed loss will be further discussed.

The potential ocular hazards associated with the use of dental curing lights were evaluated. Recommendations are provided for precluding exposure of personnel to hazardous levels of optical radiation. Abstract

Optical radiation from MIG (GMAW) welding arc ignitions has been measured with a rapid scan spectrometer. The time resolved spectral measurements reveal a substantial overshoot of ultraviolet radiation during the ignition phase of a 200 A aluminum arc. Calculations which follow the ACGIH guidelines show that, at a welding current of 300 A, the unprotected eye at a distance of 0.5 m may suffer a “flash” after the reception of radiation from only one ignition.

Abstract

The article presents a study on methadone detection from exhaled breath condensate (EBC) of patients with methadone maintenance. The authors processed the EBC samples using Ecoscreen, solid-phase extraction, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (MS)-tandem MS (LC-MS-MS). Result shows that five of the 14 respondents who belonged to the controlled group were negative from methadone. Moreover, the EBC testing with LC-MS-MS was recommended by the authors for drug-of-abuse testing.

Abstract

The article presents a study which evaluates the sampling procedures of Methadone testing from exhaled breath. The study uses liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (MS) analysis to measure methadone levels from breath sample of patients receiving methadone maintenance treatment. Results show that methadone is found in exhaled breath of patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment and breath testing has a potential in detecting drugs of abuse.
