Adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients with cancer have few opportunities to interact with peers in their lives. To meet peers safely during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a hospital-based online patients support program called Online AYA Hiroba was launched for AYA patients with cancer and held regularly by the National Cancer Center Hospital in Japan. This retrospective study suggested the degree of satisfaction with this program and issues about facilitating the sessions that are unique to the online environment. Our findings potentially contribute to the establishment of a hospital-based online patients support program for AYA patients with cancer at other hospitals.

Eating-related distress (ERD) is one type of psychosocial distress among advanced cancer patients and family caregivers. Its alleviation is a key issue in palliative care; however, there is no validated tool for measuring ERD.The purpose of this study was to validate tools for evaluating ERD among patients and family caregivers. The study consisted of a development and validation/retest phase. In the development phase, we made preliminary questionnaires for patients and family caregivers. After face validity and content validity, we performed an exploratory factor analysis and discussed the final adoption of items. In the validation/retest phase, we examined factor validity with an exploratory factor analysis. We calculated Pearson's correlation coefficients between the questionnaire for patients, the Functional Assessment of Anorexia/Cachexia Therapy Anorexia Cachexia Subscale (FAACT ACS) and the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-Cachexia 24 (EORTC QLQ-CAX24) and Pearson's correlation coefficients between the questionnaire for family caregivers and the Caregiver Quality of Life Index-Cancer (CQOLC) for concurrent validity. We calculated Cronbach's alpha coefficients (Cronbach's alpha) and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for internal consistency and test-retest reliability. We performed the Mann-Whitney U test between the questionnaires and cancer cachexia based on criteria from the international consensus for known-group validity.In the development phase, 162 pairs of patients and family caregivers were asked to participate, and 144 patients and 106 family caregivers responded. In the validation/retest phase, 333 pairs of patients and family caregivers were asked to participate, and 234 patients and 152 family caregivers responded. Overall, 183 patients and 112 family caregivers did the retest. Seven conceptual groups were extracted for the ERD among patients and family caregivers, respectively. Patient factors 1-7 correlated with FAACT ACS (r = -0.63, -0.43, -0.55, -0.40, -0.38, -0.54, -0.38, respectively) and EORTC QLQ-CAX24 (r = 0.58, 0.40, 0.60, 0.49, 0.38, 0.59, 0.42, respectively). Family factors 1-7 correlated with CQOLC (r = -0.34, -0.30, -0.37, -0.37, -0.46, -0.42, -0.40, respectively). The values of Cronbach's alpha and ICC of each factor and all factors of patients ranged from 0.84 to 0.96 and 0.67 to 0.83, respectively. Those of each factor and all factors of family caregivers ranged from 0.84 to 0.96 and 0.63 to 0.84, respectively. The cachexia group of patients had significantly higher scores than the non-cachexia group for each factor and all factors.Newly developed tools for measuring ERD experienced by advanced cancer patients and family caregivers have been validated.

PURPOSE Multimodal care for cancer cachexia is needed. This study examined factors associated with practicing multimodal cachexia care among physicians and nurses engaging in cancer care. METHODS This was a preplanned secondary analysis of a survey investigating clinicians' perspectives on cancer cachexia. Data of physicians and nurses were used. Data on knowledge, skills, and confidence in multimodal cachexia care were obtained. Nine items on practicing multimodal cachexia care were evaluated. Participants were divided into two groups as practicing multimodal cachexia care (above median value for the nine items) or not. Comparisons were made using the Mann-Whitney U test or chi-square test. Multiple regression analysis was performed to identify the factors of practicing the multimodal care. RESULTS Total of 233 physicians and 245 nurses were included. Significant differences were observed between the groups: female sex ( P = .025), palliative care versus oncology specialization ( P < .001), the number of clinical guidelines used ( P < .001), the number of symptoms used ( P = .005), training for cancer cachexia ( P = .008), knowledge on cancer cachexia ( P < .001), and confidence in cancer cachexia management ( P < .001). Palliative care specialization (partial regression coefficient [ B] = 0.85; P < .001), the number of clinical guidelines used ( B = 0.44; P < .001), knowledge on cancer cachexia ( B, 0.94; P < .001), and confidence in cancer cachexia management ( B = 1.59; P < .001) were statistically significant in multiple regression analysis. CONCLUSION Specialization in palliative care, specific knowledge, and confidence were associated with the practice of multimodal care for cancer cachexia.

Summary: Background & Aims: The prevalence of artificially administered nutrition and hydration (AANH) in different age groups among patients with advanced cancer remains unknown. The present study investigated the current utilization of AANH according to age groups in palliative care units. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study. We obtained information on primary nutritional administration routes during the first week of admission and data on the averaged calorie sufficiency rate or total calorie intake on the 7th day of admission. Patients were divided into five age groups (18–39, 40–59, 60–74, 75–89, and 90- years). Among patients receiving AANH, the proportions of higher-calorie AANH were compared between the five age groups. Results: A total of 1453 patients were included. The proportion of patients categorized as receiving nutrition and hydration via the parenteral route was the highest in the 18–39 and 40–59 groups (52.4 and 41.1%, respectively). Objective: No standard treatment for cancer-related fatigue (CRF) for inpatients in a palliative care setting exists. The aim of this study was to validate the previous study-derived efficacy of dexamethasone 8 mg for CRF among inpatients in a palliative care setting. Methods: Inpatients with moderate fatigue (≥4/10) were enrolled in a multicenter phase II trial. Dexamethasone 8 mg p.o. or 6.6 mg i.v. was administered for seven days and 4 mg p.o. or 3.3 mg i.v. for seven consecutive days. The primary endpoint was a threshold average change of Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy (FACIT)-fatigue subscale score of 3. The secondary endpoints were evaluated with the anorexia-cachexia subscale (ACS), and the Edmonton symptom assessment scale-revised Japanese version. Results: A total of 32 patients were enrolled. On day 8, the mean change of FACIT-fatigue subscale from day 1 was 5.2 (95% confidence interval 0.8–10.0), in which the lower bound was above 0 but not above the prespecified threshold value of 3.0 (p = 0.72). Edmonton symptom assessment system (ESAS)-fatigue was significantly improved by day 3 (p = 0.02), but not on day 8 or day 15. ACS, physical well-being, and ESAS-lack of appetite significantly improved by day 8 and day 15. Adverse events were tolerable. Conclusion: This study showed that dexamethasone 8 mg failed to achieve the preset efficacy for CRF among inpatients in a palliative care setting. However, this treatment improved fatigue and would be an option for CRF. jRCT (jRCTs031180068).

This study investigated the experience of palliative care physicians (PCPs) and their knowledge and recognition of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and immune-related adverse events (irAEs) in clinical practice as well as the need to provide palliative care services for patients after ICI treatments. A cross-sectional survey with self-administered questionnaires was conducted between February and April 2020. A total of 759 questionnaires were sent to PCPs in Japan. The changes in the PCPs’ knowledge and recognition of ICIs and irAEs due to the increased experiences of treating patients after ICI treatments were analyzed. Four hundred ninety-two responses (64.8%) were analyzed. Only 15.0% of respondents had no experience of patients after ICI treatments, while 53.9% had experience of more than six patients. On the other hand, 40% of respondents had no experience of patients with suspected irAEs, while only 13.4% had experience of more than six patients. Respondents with more experience of patients after ICI treatments or those with suspected irAEs had extensive knowledge of ICIs and irAEs, were more confident in treating these patients, and tended to consider irAEs as therapeutic indications. The majority of respondents required guidelines and efficient consultation systems with oncologists. This study demonstrated that PCPs with experience had extensive knowledge and confidence of ICIs and irAEs and tended to recognize irAEs as therapeutic indications. The establishment of a more intimate relationship between PCPs and oncologists is important for providing better treatment for these patients.

Parenteral morphine is widely used for dyspnea of imminently dying cancer patients (terminal dyspnea). However, the efficacy of other opioids such as oxycodone remains largely unknown.To explore the efficacy of parenteral oxycodone vs. morphine by continuous infusion over 24 hours in cancer patients with terminal dyspnea.This was a pre-planned subgroup analysis of a multicenter prospective observational study. Inclusion criteria were advanced cancer patients admitted to palliative care units, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status = 3-4, and a dyspnea intensity ≥2 on the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale (IPOS) for which oxycodone or morphine was initiated by continuous infusion. We measured dyspnea IPOS scores over 24 hours.We analyzed 164 patients who received oxycodone (n = 26) and morphine (n = 138) for dyspnea (median survival = 5 days). The mean age was 70 years, 58 patients (35%) had lung cancer, and 97 (59%) had lung metastases. Complete case analysis revealed that mean dyspnea IPOS scores decreased from 3.0 (standard deviation = 0.7) to 1.5 (0.7) in the oxycodone group (difference in means = 1.5; P 0.001), and from 2.9 (0.7) to 1.6 (1.0) in the morphine group (difference in means = 1.3; P 0.001). No significant between-group differences existed in the IPOS scores at 24 hours (P = 0.753). Adverse events were seen in no and 5 patients in the oxycodone and morphine groups, respectively.Parenteral oxycodone may be equally effective and safe as morphine in the treatment of terminal dyspnea in cancer patients. Future randomized controlled trials should confirm the efficacy and safety of opioids other than morphine for terminal dyspnea.

How clinicians treat patients with terminal dyspnea widely varies, which could hamper quality care. We visualized comprehensive pharmacological treatment delivered by palliative care physicians.To examine adherence to a comprehensive pharmacological treatment algorithm for patients with terminal dyspnea, and to explore its outcomes during 48 h.A multicenter cohort study at five sites (February 2020 to June 2021).We prospectively enrolled consecutive patients with advanced cancer, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status 3-4, and moderate/severe dyspnea. Participating palliative care physicians initiated algorithm-based treatment. The primary outcome was the proportion of adherence to the treatment algorithm over 24 h (predefined goal, 70%). We evaluated the adherence, goal achievement, and dyspnea level with a numerical rating scale (NRS), as well as adverse events over 48 h.All 108 patients received algorithm-based pharmacological treatment. Among 96 and 87 patients who were alive at 24 and 48 h, respectively, 96 (100%; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 96%-100%) and 82 (94%; 95%CI = 87%-98%) continued to receive the algorithm treatment, respectively, and 66 (69%; 95%CI = 59%-77%) and 64 (74%; 95%CI = 63%-82%) achieved the treatment goals, respectively. Using a complete case analysis with paired t-tests, mean dyspnea NRS scores significantly reduced from 7.3 (standard error, 0.2) at the baseline to 4.9 (0.3) at 24 h (n = 72; p 0.001), and 7.2 (0.3) at the baseline to 4.6 (0.4) at 48 h (n = 55; p 0.001). Most adverse events were mild to moderate.The comprehensive pharmacological treatment algorithm was feasible, and the study data supports its preliminary efficacy and safety. The use of this algorithm may help clinicians improve care for patients with terminal dyspnea.

ObjectivesThe prognostic factors in patients with malignancy-related ascites (MA) have been poorly investigated. This study aimed to evaluate both the prognostic impact of MA on terminally ill patients with cancer and the prognostic factors in those with MA.MethodsThis was a post hoc analysis of a multicentre, prospective cohort study. Patients with advanced cancer admitted to palliative care units at 23 institutions and aged≥18 years were enrolled between January and December 2017. Overall survival (OS) was compared according to MA. A multivariate analysis was conducted to explore prognostic factors in patients with MA.ResultsOf 1896 eligible patients, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary pancreatic cancers accounted for 42.5%. 568 (30.0%) of the total had MA. Patients with MA had significantly shorter OS than those without MA (median, 14 vs 22 days, respectively; HR, 1.55; 95% CI, 1.39 to 1.72; pConclusionsMA had a negative impact on survival in terminally ill patients with cancer. A multivariate analysis revealed several prognostic factors in patients with terminal cancer and MA.

To examine the safety, effectiveness, and patient-perceived benefit of treatment with olanzapine for nausea and vomiting (N/V) in patients with advanced cancer. We conducted a multicenter prospective observational study in a tertiary care setting (Trial registration number: UMIN000020493, date of registration: 2016/1/12). We measured the following: average nausea in the last 24 h using a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS: range 0–10) at baseline and day 2, patient-perceived treatment benefit (based on a 5-point verbal scale), and adverse events (AEs; using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4). The 85 participants (45% men) had a mean age of 58.7±15.8 years. Major causes of N/V were opioids (44%) and chemotherapy (34%). All patients received a daily dose of olanzapine of 5 mg or less as first-line treatment (N=35) or second- or later-line treatment (N=50). Objective: To evaluate real-world data on the use of tapentadol (TAP) in cancer patients.Design: Single-center retrospective study.Setting: Curative/palliative.Patients, participants: Patients who started TAP between October 2014 and December 2018 at our institution.Main outcome measure(s): The primary outcome was the reason for TAP initiation. Secondary outcomes included prescription duration, TAP cessation rate, reason for cessation, and adverse events (AEs). Since the palliative care team (PCT) tended to prescribe to cancer patients with intractable pain more often than patients in usual care, and also tended to prescribe opioids based on their characteristics, we decided to compare patients with and without PCT intervention.Results: There were 175 patients who first received TAP during the study period, of whom 81 patients (46.3 percent) were male. The median age was 60 years. TAP was prescribed for opioid-naive patients in 45 (26 percent) cases and opioid switch in 130 (74 percent) cases. When comparing the PCT group (n = 121) and the non-PCT group (n = 54) using univariate analysis, the PCT group had a higher opioid switch rate (81.8 percent vs 57.4 percent, p < .001), higher proportion of patients with neuropathic pain (NP) (65.3 percent vs 16.7 percent, p < .001), and a higher proportion of patients with a history of nausea (41.3 percent vs 18.5 percent, p < .01). The cessation rate due to AEs was 8 percent overall.Conclusions: Palliative care physicians prescribed TAP for patients with NP or a history of nausea. Opioid-naive patients were preferred by oncologists. TAP has good tolerability in both groups, with a low dropout rate due to AEs.

This study aimed to analyze and categorize the actual situation of employment consultation and support according to consultation times or employment status at the Consultation Support Center of the National Cancer Center Hospital of Japan.We retrospectively analyzed the patient backgrounds, consultation contents, and the number of employment consultation cases conducted at the Consultation Support Center of the National Cancer Center Hospital during a 6-month period from May to December 2018.During the study period, 117 patients (male: female = 46:71) visited the Consultation Support Center. The median age of patients was 48 years old. The most common primary cancer site was the breast in 28 patients followed by the lung in 16 patients, and then gynecologic cancer in 10 patients. The most common cancer treatment was chemotherapy in 53 patients (45.3%), and 12 patients (10.2%) were recurrent patients. Fifty-two patients were in regular employment, 24 were unemployed, 17 were of unknown employment status, 16 were in non-regular employment, and 8 were classified/categorized as other. In terms of working status, 40 were on leave, 35 were working, 15 were seeking work, 8 were unemployed, and 19 were categorized as other. The median number of consultations was 1 (1,11). The content of consultations was the social security system in 44 cases (37.6%) job seeking in 24 cases (20.5%), how to inform the workplace in 14 cases (12%), and workplace environment adjustment in 13 cases (11.1%).We conducted a survey on the actual status of employment consultation in a cancer center hospital. The majority of consultations were completed in one session. In terms of the content of consultations, there was a high need for consultations on the social security system and job seeking. Further study is needed on the characteristics of employment consultations according to employment status and other attributes.

Background Cancer pain may be refractory to standard pharmacological treatment. Interventional procedures are important for quality of analgesia. The aim of the present study was to clarify the availability of four interventional procedures (celiac plexus neurolysis/splanchnic nerve neurolysis, phenol saddle block, epidural analgesia, and intrathecal analgesia), the number of procedures performed by specialists, and their associated factors. In addition, we aimed to establish how familiar home hospice physicians and oncologists are with the different interventional procedures available to manage cancer pain. Methods A cross-sectional survey using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted. Subjects were certified pain specialists, interventional radiologists, home hospice physicians, and clinical oncologists. Results The numbers of valid responses/mails were 545/1,112 for pain specialists, 554/1,087 for interventional radiology specialists, 144/308 for home hospice physicians, and 412/800 for oncologists. Among pain specialists, depending on intervention, 40.9-75.2% indicated that they perform each procedure by themselves, and 47.5-79.8% had not performed any of the procedures in the past 3 years. Pain specialists had performed the four procedures 4,591 times in the past 3 years. Among interventional radiology specialists, 18.1% indicated that they conduct celiac plexus neurolysis/splanchnic nerve neurolysis by themselves. Interventional radiology specialists had performed celiac plexus neurolysis/splanchnic nerve neurolysis 202 times in the past 3 years. Multivariate analysis revealed that the number of patients seen for cancer pain and the perceived difficulty in gaining experience correlated with the implementation of procedures among pain specialists. Among home hospice physicians and oncologists, depending on intervention, 3.5-27.1% responded that they were unfamiliar with each procedure. Conclusions Although pain specialists responded that the implementation of each intervention was possible, the actual number of the interventions used was limited. As interventional procedures are well known, it is important to take measures to ensure that pain specialists and interventional radiology physicians are sufficiently utilized to manage refractory cancer pain.

Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients have few opportunities to interact with peers in the hospital. AYA Hiroba, a peer support system for AYA cancer patients, was launched and held regularly at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Japan. This questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the degree of satisfaction and opinions of AYA cancer patients regarding this program. Participants reported that the content was satisfying and useful. Their impressions suggested that AYA Hiroba is potentially effective for promoting interaction with the same generation, change in mood, and acquisition of information.

Duloxetine has some effect against cancer neuropathic pain (CNP); however, predictors of duloxetine response are unclear. This study sought to identify predictors of duloxetine response in patients with CNP. Patients (N = 70) with CNP unresponsive to or intolerant of opioid–pregabalin combination therapy, with a brief pain inventory-short form (BPI-SF) Item 5 score (average pain) ≥ 4, and with a total hospital anxiety and depression scale score < 20, were randomized to a duloxetine or a placebo group. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to identify predictors of duloxetine response as a secondary analysis with the change in the average pain score on day 10 from day 0 as the dependent variable, and the following five covariates; baseline (day 0) average pain score, baseline opioid dose, continuation/discontinuation of pregabalin, and items 20 and 21 score of the short-form McGill pain questionnaire 2 (SF-MPQ-2) as independent variables. Of the four domains (continuous pain, intermittent pain, neuropathic pain, and affective descriptors) score of SF-MPQ-2 on day 0, significant differences were observed in the neuropathic pain domain (p = 0.040) in change on the average pain between day 10 and day 0 in the duloxetine group. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that patients with a high score for SF-MPQ-2 Item 21 (tingling pain) on day 0 had a significantly greater change in average pain between day 10 and day 0 (p = 0.046). Patients with a high score for SF-MPQ-2 Item 21 might benefit more from duloxetine.

Cancer patients in adolescents and young adults (AYA) generation aged 15-39 years have various psychosocial needs during their treatment course such as school enrollment, finding employment, marriage, and fertility. It is difficult for medical professionals to gain experience related to providing medical care and consultation support to these kinds of AYA generation cancer patients. There is a need to provide information and establish both support and medical care systems that are able to meet the diverse needs unique to this generation. This review will explain how to launch an AYA support team (AST). We have worked and established the AST since 2016, which is medical care teams that provide support according to the life stage of each individual patient and build a multidisciplinary AYA generation patient support system. The team-building process consisted of two main projects: building and enlarging multidisciplinary team and establishing screening process of psychosocial needs of AYA generation patients. Multidisciplinary healthcare professionals got involved in the AST with already-existing patient support functions in our center: the patient support center, which is an outpatient department and the palliative care team, which is an inpatient interdepartmental team. The AST systematically finds patients in need of assistance and offers them support as a multidisciplinary team. The AST also established a procedure that systematically gathers information about the needs of patients by using a screening tool. In addition, the AST provides the following specialized services: reproductive medicine, supporting cancer patients with children, employment support, and peer support. The AST has been established and sophisticatedly worked. It can flexibly provide various psychosocial support services. This review will explain how to launch an AST.

e24008 Background: Symptoms associated with malignant wounds (MWs) worsen a patient's quality of life. However, MWs’ impact on psychosocial health and end-of-life status is unknown. Methods: This is a secondary analysis of the results of a large prospective cohort study conducted in 23 palliative care units in Japan. Consecutive patients were enrolled and followed up until their death or for six months. Patient demographics, symptom burden, medication use, and MW status were documented on admission. Healthcare professionals rated the symptoms using the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale (IPOS), a 5-point Likert scale. Quality of death (QOD) was evaluated at death using the Good Death Scale (GDS). The primary outcome was the prevalence of severe psychological symptom burden, evaluated as an IPOS-feeling score of 2–4. Factors that affected psychological symptoms and their relationship with GDS were also investigated. Results: Among the 1896 enrolled patients, 156 (8.2%) had MWs. MWs predominantly affected females and younger patients, and the most common primary sites were the breast (28.2%) and head and neck (19.2%). Among the patients with MWs, 75 (50.3%), 59 (39.6%), and 42 (28.2%) had exudate, pain, and bleeding, respectively. Among the 32 patients with MWs requiring dressing change at least twice a day and 117 patients with MWs requiring dressing change less than once a day, 20 (62.5%) and 44 (37.6%) had an IPOS-feeling score of 2–4, respectively (p = .015). Patients with MWs required antidepressants and opioids more frequently and received higher doses of opioids. Between the patients with and without MW, there were significant differences in IPOS-feeling and pain scores but not in breathlessness, fatigue, anorexia, somnolence, or dry mouth scores. IPOS-feeling and pain scores were worse in patients with MWs. Patients without MWs did not have better GDS scores (p = .48). Conclusions: Patients with MWs frequently required antidepressants and opioids, suggesting an increased prevalence of depression and severe pain. Psychological distress was influenced by the frequency of dressing changes. The presence of MWs did not affect the QOD.[Table: see text]

We retrospectively investigated the use of oral hydromorphone for cancer pain. Nineteen patients treated for cancer pain with oral hydromorphone were reviewed in this study. Cancers had occurred in the gastrointestinal (n=4), lung(n=3), breast(n=2), bone and soft tissue(n=2), hematological(n=2), and others(n=6). The administered opioids before switching to hydromorphone were morphine, oxycodone, and tapentadol. The mean oral morphine equivalent daily dose (OMEDD)was 89.3 mg. The average dose of hydromorphone administered was 16.4 mg/day, and average NRS 10(numerical rating scale: 0-10)scores of cancer pain before and after switching were 4.1 and 3.8, respectively, showing no significant differences. In this study, switching from other opioids to oral hydromorphone was feasible with an approved conversion ratio, ie, an oral hydromorphone-to-oral morphine ratio of 1:5. No severe adverse effects were observed. The oral hydromorphone extended-release formulation was administered every 24 h, as a tiny tablet formulation that is preferable owing to easy administration and adherence.

We presented the case of a 63-year-old woman with severe abdominal distention due to recurrent retroperitoneal sarcoma. Further, the rapid progression of the tumor made it difficult to relieve the abdominal distention. Titrated intravenous morphine was administered. Although the dose of morphine was escalated and the patient was sedated, she continued to experience pain. The addition of a continuous epidural analgesic lidocaine to manage the abdominal distention was effective. This case report describes a stepwise approach with continuous epidural analgesia of lidocaine for a bulky tumor- related abdominal distention.

Background: Cell-free and concentrated ascites reinfusion therapy (CART) is a strategy to improve hypoalbuminemia due to refractory ascites. CART has recently been applied in the treatment of cancer patients. This study was performed to assess the safety of CART in a single cancer institute.Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 233 CART procedures that were performed for 132 cancer patients in our institute. Results: The median volume of ascites before and after concentration was 4,720 and 490 mL (median concentration rate, 10.0-fold), The median amounts of total protein and albumin were 64.0g and 32.6g (median recovery rates, 44.9% and 49.0%), respectively. Thirty-three adverse events (AEs) were observed in 22 (9.4%) of 233 procedures; 30 of these events occurred after reinfusion. The most common reinfusion-related AEs were fever (13 events) and chills (10 events). Univariate analyses revealed no significant relationships between the frequency of AEs and age, sex, appearance of ascites, volume of harvested and concentrated ascites, the ascites processing rate (filtration and concentration), volume of saline used for membrane cleaning, amount of calculated total protein for infusion, or prophylaxis against AEs; the reinfusion rate >100 mL/h affected the frequency of AEs, regardless of the prophylactic use of steroids. Conclusions: The observed AEs were mainly mild cytokine-related reactions after reinfusion, which were related to a reinfusion rate of >100 mL per hour. Although our study was retrospective in nature and undertaken in a single institute, this information may be helpful for the management of cancer patients with refractory malignant ascites using CART.
