This contribution presents the design and implementation of a compact and robust Echelle-inspired cross-grating spectrometer which is arranged as a double pass setup. This allows use of the employed refractive elements for collimation of the incoming light and, after diffraction at the reflective crossed diffraction grating, for imaging the diffracted light onto the detector. The crossed diffraction grating combines the two dispersive functionalities of a classical Echelle spectrometer in a single element and is therefore formed by a superposition of two blazed linear gratings which are oriented perpendicularly. The refractive elements and the plane grating are arranged in a rigid objective group which is beneficial in terms of stability and robustness. The experimental tests prove that the designed resolving power of more than 300 is achieved for the addressed spectrum ranging from 400 nm to 1100 nm by using an entrance pinhole diameter of 105 µm. The utilization of a single mode fiber increases the resolving power to more than 1000, but leads to longer acquisition times.

Hyperchromatic systems are characterized by strong longitudinal chromatic aberrations that are quantitatively described by very small equivalent Abbe numbers. In this contribution, doublet systems are systematically studied with the aim of obtaining extreme values for the equivalent Abbe numbers. Both purely refractive combinations and hybrid systems of diffractive and refractive components are considered. Chromatic axial splitting is determined as a function of the optical powers of the individual components as well as the dispersion properties of the materials involved. In order to determine actual implementable configurations for extremely small equivalent Abbe numbers, a systematic ray-trace analysis is performed in addition to paraxial studies, taking into account geometric constraints on lens curvatures and considering also complete, continuous dispersion curves. As extreme values for systems with appropriate imaging quality, an equivalent Abbe number of υ ~ = − 2.5 is obtained for the purely refractive approach, and υ ~ = 0.4 for the hybrid case, which is more than 8 times smaller than the absolute value of a single diffractive lens.

We describe the design and set-up an array of micro-spectrometers for parallel sensing. The approach utilizes a prism – grating combination to obtain a linear light path and to achieve a high packing density. This yields 2’000 micro spectrometers of 6 mm length only when working with a 4/3” CCD image sensor.

This paper presents a dual-mode spectral imaging system, which allows switching between pure lateral imaging and the spectrally resolved recording of spatial information. The optical system was equipped with tunable functionalities in order to achieve high flexibility, cover a wide range of object distances, and address extended field angles. A fluidic membrane lens was used for the variable focus, and the recording of the laterally extended scene was made possible by successively adjusting the different tilting angles to the different object positions. The capability and performance of the spectral imaging system were assessed using various test scenes, with different aimed field positions and changing object distances.

A method that significantly increases the detection efficiency of filter array-based spectral sensors is proposed. The basic concept involves a wavelength-dependent redistribution of incident light before it reaches the filter elements located in front of the detector. Due to this redistribution, each filter element of the array receives a spatially concentrated amount of a pre-selected and adjusted spectral partition of the entire incident light. This approach can be employed to significantly reduce the reflection and absorption losses of each filter element. The proof-of-concept is demonstrated by a setup that combines a series of consecutively arranged dichroic filters with Fabry–Perot filter arrays. Experimentally, an efficiency increase by a factor larger than 4 compared to a reference system is demonstrated. The optical system is a non-imaging spectrometer, which combines the efficiency enhancement module with the filter arrays, is compact ( 17.5 m m × 17.5 m m × 7.8 m m ), and integrated completely inside the CCD camera mount.

Echelle inspired cross-grating spectrometers offer the potential to bridge the gap between classical high-end echelle spectrometers and curved-grating single-element instruments. In particular, the cross-grating approach offers the possibility to simultaneously achieve a high spectral resolution and a wide accessible spectral range in compact dimensions and without moving parts. We report on the complete realization and implementation details of an all-reflective cross-grating spectrometer based on a modified Czerny–Turner configuration including a folded beam path and a toric-convex mirror for aberration compensation. The applicability of the cross-grating spectrometer is demonstrated by test measurements including the recording of the spectra of different plant leaves. For the cross-grating spectrometer, with an accessible wavelength range between 330 and 1100 nm, a spectral resolution of 0.6 nm at 589 nm was achieved.

Pushbroom hyperspectral imaging systems require relative motion with respect to the target for hyperspectral data acquisition by means of spatial scanning, which increases the equipment cost and limits the application scenarios. We address this by introducing a pushbroom system with an internal line-scanning unit consisting of a slit aperture mounted on a piezoelectric linear motor. Different slit positions have tilted incidence angles at the grating, resulting in shifts of diffraction patterns relative to the imaging sensor. We demonstrate a method to compensate this shift by using a rotating arm controlled by a stepper motor to reposition the camera based on slit position.

An array of micro spectrometers for parallel spectral sensing is designed, set up and tested. It utilizes a planar prism grating combination to obtain an almost linear optical system of 6 mm length only. Arranging such micro spectrometers in an array configuration yields 2'000 spectrometers when utilizing a common 4/3"" CCD image sensor well adapted to e.g. microscopic image dimensions. The application in microscopic imaging in the 450-900 nm spectral range is demonstrated as proof of concept, which can be adapted to massively parallel sensing in the frame of integrated sensor concepts.

The concept of a new compact echelle-inspired cross-grating spectrometer is introduced, and a specific optical design is presented. The new concept aims to achieve simultaneously a high spectral resolution, a wide accessible spectral range, and compact dimensions. The essential system novelty concerns the combination of different aspects: the implementation of a crossed grating comprising both the main dispersion and order separation, a folded reflective beam path, which enables a reduction of the system volume, and the introduction of a form-adjustable mirror for aberration compensation. The exemplary optical design offers a spectral bandwidth ranging from 330-1100 nm with spectral resolution better than 1.4 nm in the fourth and 0.4 nm in the 11th order. The optical setup covers a volume of 110 mm × 110 mm × 30 mm.

Among the methods developed for hyperspectral imaging, pushbroom spatial scanning stands out when it comes to achieving high spectral resolution over a wide spectral range. However, conventional pushbroom systems are usually realized using passive system components, which has limited their flexibility and adaptability and narrowed their application scenarios. In this work, we adopt a different approach to the design and construction of pushbroom systems based on using active internal components. We present a new system concept utilizing an internal line scanning unit and a rotating camera mechanism. This enables a dual-mode imaging system that allows switching between 2D spatial imaging and spectral imaging. The line scanning unit, which consists of a narrow slit mounted to a linear piezo motor, facilitates the spatial scanning of the target while eliminating the laborious relative motion between the target and the imaging system, which is needed in conventional spectrographs. A software is developed for the automation and synchronization of the active components, which enables a novel feed-forward compensation function to compensate the shift in the diffraction angle due to the scanning motion of the slit and provide higher flexibility in data acquisition.

This paper presents the conception and implementation of a variable diameter ring-cutting system for a COsub2/sublaser with a working wavelength of 10.6 μm. The laser-cutting system is adapted to an observation zoom microscope for combined use and is applicable for the extraction of small circular areas from polymer films, such as forensic adhesive tapes in a single shot. As an important characteristic for our application, the variable diameter ring-cutting system provides telecentricity in the target area. Ring diameters are continuously tunable between 500 μm and 2 mm. A minimum width of less than 20 μm was found for the ring profile edge. The basic characteristics of the system, including telecentricity, were experimentally evaluated and demonstrated by cutting experiments on different polymer tapes and further exemplary samples.

Quantitative detection of angiogenic biomarkers provides a powerful tool to diagnose cancers in early stages and to follow its progression during therapy. Conventional tests require trained personnel, dedicated laboratory equipment and are generally time-consuming. Herein, we propose our developed biosensing platform as a useful tool for a rapid determination of Angiopoietin-2 biomarker directly from patient plasma within 30 minutes, without any sample preparation or dilution. Bloch surface waves supported by one dimensional photonic crystal are exploited to enhance and redirect the fluorescence arising from a sandwich immunoassay that involves Angiopoietin-2. The sensing units consist of disposable and low-cost plastic biochips coated with the photonic crystal. The biosensing platform is demonstrated to detect Angiopoietin-2 in plasma samples at the clinically relevant concentration of 6 ng/mL, with an estimated limit of detection of approximately 1 ng/mL. This is the first Bloch surface wave based assay capable of detecting relevant concentrations of an angiogenic factor in plasma samples. The results obtained by the developed biosensing platform are in close agreement with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, demonstrating a good accuracy, and their repeatability showed acceptable relative variations.

Bloch surface waves (BSW) propagating at the boundary of truncated photonic crystals (1D-PC) have emerged as an attractive approach for label-free sensing in plasmon-like sensor configurations. Due to the very low losses in such dielectric thin film stacks, BSW feature very low angular resonance widths compared to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) case. Besides label-free operation, the large field enhancement and the absence of quenching allow utilizing BSW coupled fluorescence detection to additionally sense the presence of fluorescent labels. This approach can be adapted to the case of angularly resolved resonance detection, thus giving rise to a combined label-free / labelled biosensor platform. It features a parallel analysis of multiple spots arranged as a one-dimensional array inside a microfluidic channel of a disposable chip. Application of such a combined biosensing approach to the detection of the Angiopoietin-2 cancer biomarker in buffer solutions is reported.

The mechanical deformations of variable elastomeric diffractive optical elements are calculated by finite element methods. Starting from optimized blazed gratings, the derived profile variations serve as an input for rigorous-coupled-wave analysis to calculate the diffraction efficiency of a spectral band from 200 to 1200 nm. Applied planar strain of up to 80% has little effect on the maximum diffraction efficiency for large grating-period-to-wavelength ratios, g/λ, with only a shift toward shorter wavelengths. With a decreasing g/λ, the maximum efficiency also decreases when stretching the grating structure. Further influences of profile design like the angle of the antiblaze facet and the use of higher-order blaze profiles were investigated. Finally, we simulate the change in the diffraction efficiency at a single wavelength of a flexible blazed grating in direct contact with a rigid glass plate. In this case, the soft matter grating is compressed and deformed to reduce the diffracting properties.

Micro- and nanostructures enable specific optical functionalities, which rely on diffractive effects or effective medium features, depending on pattern dimension and wavelength. Performance predictions of optical systems which make use of nanostructured materials require having an accurate description of these materials ready to hand within the optical design. At the one hand, nanostructure characteristics which result from rigorous electromagnetic modeling can be used for the optical design. At the other hand, manufactured nanostructures may deviate from their idealized geometry, which will affect the performance of the optical system, wherein these artificial structures will be used. Thus, detailed optical characterization of the micro- or nanostructure functionality is prerequisite for accurate optical design and performance prediction. To this end, several characterization techniques can be applied depending on the scope of the optical design, finally. We report on a general route to include all accessible and required optical information about the nanostructured material within a corresponding model of the nanostructure as a specific optical component which can be used within a ray-trace engine, finally. This is illustrated by a meta-material with asymmetric transmission properties in some more detail.

Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) are of enormous importance for applications in spectroscopic and imaging systems. We demonstrate that modified Talbot-Lithography is a fast and flexible technology for the mastering of micro-optical components, especially to manufacture high efficient spectroscopic diffractive gratings with an extended profile depth. The characteristics of DOEs also open up new opportunities for their integration in variable elastomeric optical components. We present theoretical investigations of the mechanical deformation of an initial Blazed-like diffractive grating and its impact on the optical diffraction efficiency.

A combination of an aspherical hybrid diffractive-refractive lens with a flexible fluidic membrane lens allows the implementation of a light sensitive and wide-aperture optical system with variable focus. This approach is comparable to the vertebrate eye in air, in which the cornea offers a strong optical power and the flexible crystalline lens is used for accommodation. Also following the natural model of the human eye, the decay of image quality with increasing field position is compensated, in the optical system presented here, by successively addressing different tilting angles which mimics saccadic eye-movements. The optical design and the instrumental implementation are presented and discussed, and the working principle is demonstrated.
