Abstract: Litter decomposition is a key process for carbon and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems and is mainly controlled by environmental conditions, substrate quantity and quality as well as microbial community abundance and composition. In particular, the effects of climate and atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on litter decomposition and its temporal dynamics are of significant importance, since their effects might change over the course of the decomposition process. Within the TeaComposition initiative, we incubated Green and Rooibos teas at 524 sites across nine biomes. We assessed how macroclimate and atmospheric inorganic N deposition under current and predicted scenarios (RCP 2.6, RCP 8.5) might affect litter mass loss measured after 3 and 12 months. Our study shows that the early to mid-term mass loss at the global scale was affected predominantly by litter quality (explaining 73% and 62% of the total variance after 3 and 12 months, respectively) followed by climate and N deposition. The effects of climate were not litter-specific and became increasingly significant as decomposition progressed, with MAP explaining 2% and MAT 4% of the variation after 12 months of incubation. The effect of N deposition was litter-specific, and significant only for 12-month decomposition of Rooibos tea at the global scale. However, in the temperate biome where atmospheric N deposition rates are relatively high, the 12-month mass loss of Green and Rooibos teas decreased significantly with increasing N deposition, explaining 9.5% and 1.1% of the variance, respectively. The expected changes in macroclimate and N deposition at the global scale by the end of this century are estimated to increase the 12-month mass loss of easily decomposable litter by 1.1–3.5% and of the more stable substrates by 3.8–10.6%, relative to current mass loss. In contrast, expected changes in atmospheric N deposition will decrease the mid-term mass loss of high-quality litter by 1.4–2.2% and that of low-quality litter by 0.9–1.5% in the temperate biome. Our results suggest that projected increases in N deposition may have the capacity to dampen the climate-driven increases in litter decomposition depending on the biome and decomposition stage of substrate.

Abstract: Through litter decomposition enormous amounts of carbon is emitted to the atmosphere. Numerous large-scale decomposition experiments have been conducted focusing on this fundamental soil process in order to understand the controls on the terrestrial carbon transfer to the atmosphere. However, previous studies were mostly based on site-specific litter and methodologies, adding major uncertainty to syntheses, comparisons and meta-analyses across different experiments and sites. In the TeaComposition initiative, the potential litter decomposition is investigated by using standardized substrates (Rooibos and Green tea) for comparison of litter mass loss at 336 sites (ranging from -9 to +26 °C MAT and from 60 to 3113 mm MAP) across different ecosystems. In this study we tested the effect of climate (temperature and moisture), litter type and land-use on early stage decomposition (3 months) across nine biomes. We show that litter quality was the predominant controlling factor in early stage litter decomposition, which explained about 65% of the variability in litter decomposition at a global scale. Abstract: International audience; As part of a program to assess the transfer of metals from soil to dairy products, the transfer of metal trace elements to milk and cheese was studied. Concentrations of non-essential (Cd and Pb) and essential elements (Cu and Zn) were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry in 61 samples of raw milk and 21 of the corresponding cheese. While metal concentrations (dry weight) in raw milk were very low (Cd: 0.34-1.01 ng/g; Pb: 0.009-0.126 mu g/g; Cu: 0.28-1.71 mu g; Zn: 20.62-30.96 mu g/g), concentrations in the corresponding cheese were significantly higher (Cd: 0.68-11.37 ng/g; Pb: 0.020-0.925 mu g/g; Cu: 5.35-21.34 mu g/g; Zn: 33.66-63.41 mu g/g). The retention factor R(t) suggests a concentration effect during the cheese making process, especially in the case of Cu, due to the use of large copper vats. Concentrations of non-essential elements (Cd and Pb) in cheese largely remained below those considered as dangerous for consumers. Abstract: This study aimed to compare the transfer of 2 manmade radionuclides, radiocesium (137Cs) and radiostron- tium (90Sr), from cow milk to whey and cheese in 3 different types of French cheese production with rennet coagulation. Most of the 137Cs was present in the aque- ous phase and became concentrated in the whey. For 137Cs transfer to whey, the processing factor (Pf; i.e., the ratio of the activity concentrations) ranged between 0.86 and 1.30 (n = 12). The food processing retention factor (Fr), calculated using the processing efficiency, ranged between 0.85 and 1.19 (n = 9). No statistical difference of Pf and Fr to whey is identified for 137Cs and the cheese products. The Pf calculated for 90Sr transfer to cheese ranged between 3.95 and 12.16, with significant differences depending on the type of cheese. In addition, a linear correlation is observed between 90Sr Pf to cheese and the Ca level in the cheese (r2 = 0.57). Thus, the Pf is enhanced in hard cheeses that are enriched in calcium. This is confirmed by nearly constant Fr values, ranging between 0.66 and 0.83. © American Dairy Science Association, 2009.

Abstract: Despite the important functional role of deep roots in withdrawing water during drought, direct measurements of root distribution are very rare in tropical rain forests. The aim of this study was to investigate the root distribution of Entandrophragma cylindricum, a common tree species in the Central African semi-deciduous rain forest, in Ferralsols and Arenosols. We dug two pits to a depth of 6 m in Ferralsols and two pits to a depth of 3 m in Arenosols, close to E. cylindricum trees. The vertical soil profiles were divided into 10 × 10-cm grid cells and the roots counted were distributed in three diameter classes. We fitted a root distribution model to our dataset. We found that vertical root distribution was shallower in Arenosols than in Ferralsols. Root penetration was not stopped even by a Ferralsol with high gravel content in its subsoil. Overall, our measurements showed that 95% of all roots were distributed to depths of between 258 and 564 cm from the soil surface, which is much deeper than the 95 cm depth previously reported in the literature for tropical rain forests. As sampling depth could explain this discrepancy, we recommend a sampling depth of at least 3–5 m to accurately estimate root distribution. The drier the dry season, the deeper the sampling depth should be. Our results are consistent with global models of root distribution in forest ecosystems, which are driven by climate variables. We thus suggest that deep rooting could be common in rain forests with a marked dry season.

Abstract: International audience; During the Chernobyl accident, large areas in Europe, particularly forests, were contaminated by radiocaesium. Soil-plant transfer is often the first step by which 137Cs enters to food chains by incorporating the forest biogeochemical cycle. The present work is devoted to assess the soil-plant transfer of radiocaesium in weakly contaminated forest area, in the Franche-Comté region (16 202 km2) in North Eastern France. This region has been markely contaminated after the Chernobyl accident. Twelve sites, with various functional features and high diversity of ecological contexts were selected to sample forests trees. Two species (Picea abies and Fagus sylvatica) and two organs, (leaves or needles and young branches) were sampled for radioactivity measurements. Radiocaesium activities in soils varied between 61 to 280 Bq.kg-1DW at 0-5 cm depth and between 14 to 224 Bq.kg-1DW at 10-15 cm. Radiocaesium activities in leaves, needles and branches displayed high variability. We reported a large variability of Aggregated Transfer Factors (Tag) values with respect to vegetation type, organ type and soil features. The activity concentration in the leaves and needles were generally higher than those measured in the branches. The Tag values could be explained by the radiocaesium bioavailability variability in relation to soil type, soil features and environmental parameters

Abstract: International audience; Plotting multiyear chemographs in a karst river may display evolutional trends in water quality. In recent decades, different factors could explain for instance phosphate decrease and nitrate increase. In the Jura karst area, different springs and rivers do not exhibit only variation of anthropogenic molecule concentrations, but also evolution of major element concentrations, that results in a change in electrical conductivity.Over a 30-year period, average electrical conductivity of the Loue River, which is totally supplied by karst springs, has increased from 260 to 470 µS/cm. Such an 81 % variation is only explainable by increases in major components, i.e. calcium and hydrogenocarbonate ions, which are the almost exclusive by-products of karstification processes in the Jurassic limestones of the Jura Mountains. Indeed, no direct anthropogenic cause may be invoked for such an evolution.An increase of dissolution throughout the system is necessarily correlated to an increase in the carbon dioxide transfer, resulting from an increase in dissolution and/or production rate.

8. The carbon balance of a young Beech forest

Abstract: Summary 1. We present measurements of CO 2 fluxes over 2 years above and within a young Beech stand in the east of France. This site is part of the Euroflux network set up to monitor fluxes over representative European forests. 2. The net ecosystem carbon (C) exchange was derived from continuous eddy flux measurements. Major components of the total flux (i.e. soil and above-ground biomass respiration and assimilation of leafy branches) were measured independently using chambers. The main C stocks (i.e. root, stem and branch biomass) were also quantified. 3. Daily minima of CO 2 flux were typically around ‐20 μ mol CO 2 m ‐2 s ‐1 during the period of full leaf expansion, while night-time ecosystem respiration varied between 5 and 15 μ mol CO 2 m ‐2 s ‐1 . The seasonal pattern of net ecosystem assimilation was very close to that of net assimilation at the single branch scale. The seasonal variation of net ecosystem exchange was closely related to leaf expansion and soil water content during the dry year of 1996. 4. Measurements of ecosystem respiration (eddy flux) were corrected for CO 2 storage within the stand. This C flux showed a seasonal pattern, the maximum rates (4‐7 g C m ‐2 day ‐1 ) occurring in spring and summer, and appeared to be correlated with soil temperature. Temporal variation of soil respiration showed the same pattern, and effects of both temperature and soil drying were found. Annual soil respiration was ∪ 70% of ecosystem respiration. Root respiration was 60% of the total below-ground respiration. 5. Annual net C exchange was ‐218 and ‐257 g C m ‐2 in 1996 and 1997, respectively, cor responding to net C uptake by the forest. These values are much lower than the annual biomass increment (stems and large roots) of the stand: 427 and 471 g C m ‐2 year ‐1 , respectively. The difference may be explained by a release of CO 2 from the decomposition of woody debris. 6. Ecosystem C loss by respiration was 800‐1000 g C m ‐2 year ‐1 . 9. Soil CO2 efflux in a beech forest: the contribution of root respiration

Abstract: La contribution de la respiration des racines au flux de carbone provenant du sol d'une jeune hetraie a ete estimee en comparant le flux de CO 2 provenant du sol sur des petites placettes isolees par une tranchee au flux de CO 2 provenant du sol mesure sur la placette principale. Le flux de CO 2 provenant du sol a ete mesure toutes les 2 a 4 semaines en 1997. Un modele empirique (y = A θ v e BT ) a ete ajuste sur les donnees de flux de CO 2 provenant du sol, et utilise pour calculer le flux annuel de carbone provenant du sol a partir de la temperature du sol (T) et de la teneur en eau volumique du sol (θ v ). Les flux annuels de carbone provenant du sol etaient de 0,66 kg C m -2 y -1 pour la placette principale et de 0,42 kg C m -2 y -1 pour les petites placettes isolees par une tranchee. La difference entre les deux estimations a ete corrigee pour prendre en compte la decomposition des racines tuees lors de l'etablissement de la tranchee. La composante heterotrophe represente 40 % du flux total de carbone provenant du sol (0,26 kg C m -2 y -1 ) alors que la respiration des racines represente 60 % du degagement de carbone (0,40 kg C m -2 y -1 ).

10. Soil CO2 efflux in a beech forest: dependence on soil temperature and soil water content

Abstract: Notre objectif etait de quantifier le flux annuel de carbone provenant du sol d'une jeune hetraie du nord-est de la France (Foret de Hesse, site Euroflux FR02) a partir de mesures de flux de CO 2 provenant du sol. Le flux de CO 2 provenant du sol montre de fortes variations saisonnieres qui ne s'expliquent pas uniquement par des variations saisonnieres de temperature du sol. En particulier, de fortes differences de flux de CO 2 provenant du sol ont ete observees entre l'ete 1996 et l'ete 1997 alors que la temperature du sol etait similaire. Cette difference s'explique au moins en partie par une inhibition du flux de CO 2 provenant du sol lorsque la teneur en eau du sol decroit. Comme les changements de temperature du sol (T) et d'humidite volumique a -10 cm (θ v ) affectent le flux de CO 2 provenant du sol, un modele empirique (y = A θ v e BT ) expliquant 86 % de la variation du flux de CO 2 provenant du sol est propose. La difference entre deux estimations du flux de carbone provenant du sol (575 g C m -2 an -1 de juin 96 a mai 97 et 663 g C m -2 an -1 de dec. 96 a nov. 97) montre clairement les effets de l'humidite du sol pendant l'ete sur le flux de carbone provenant du sol.

11. Influence de l'humidité du sol et de la distribution des racines sur le potentiel hydrique du xylème dans des peuplements de chêne (Quercus sp) de basse altitude

Abstract: Les variations du potentiel hydrique du xyleme de rameaux de chenes adultes (Quercus sp) ont ete mises en relation avec les variations des parametres climatiques, temperature et hygrometrie, avec celles des parametres pedologiques, humidite volumique et potentiel hydrique du sol, et avec les differents types de prospection racinaire. Les mesures ont ete effectuees dans 3 stations de l'etage collineen durant une saison de vegetation. Une des stations est etablie sur un sol tres profond (4,5 m) ne presentant pas d'obstacle a l'enracinement. La seconde repose sur un sol profond (3 m) hydromorphe montrant une contrainte a l'enracinement a 50 cm de profondeur. La derniere presente egalement une contrainte a 50 cm et la roche calcaire apparait a 150 cm. Les calculs de regressions multiples pas a pas montrent que le potentiel du xyleme varie au cours de la journee en fonction du potentiel atmospherique et de l'humidite volumique du sol mesuree entre 40 et 50 cm et entre 80 et 90 cm de profondeur. Les relations sont differentes selon la station consideree: plus le sol est contraignant pour l'enracinement, plus le potentiel du xyleme est lie aux conditions atmospheriques. Les resultats obtenus montrent que le systeme racinaire profond assure l'alimentation en eau en conditions de secheresse. De plus, les 2 especes de chene etudiees reagissent au stress hydrique de maniere identique

Abstract: Rare Earth Elements (REE) are widely used to trace natural geochemical processes. They are also increasingly used by man (electronics industry, medicine, agriculture) and therefore considered as emerging pollutants. The present study documents REE mobility in non-polluted natural soil-plant systems in order to characterize their environmental availability for future anthropogenic pollution. The study is based on a field approach in non-polluted natural sites with contrasting geological environments (limestone, granite, and carbonatite) and highly variable REE contents. REE concentrations in soils do not directly reflect bedrock concentrations, but depend largely on pedogenetic processes and on the mineralogy of bedrock and soil. The soils of all sites are with respect to bedrock enriched in heavy REE. The REE uptake by plants is not primarily controlled by the plant itself, but depends on the concentration and the speciation in the soil and the adsorbed soil water pool. REE uptake by plant roots are linked with those of Fe. Roots absorb preferentially the light REE. Before translocation, REE are retained by the Casparian strip leading to much lower concentrations in the aerial parts. The transport of the REE within the xylem is associated with the general nutrient flux.

Abstract: The combination of the Sr, Nd and Pb isotope systems, recognized as tracers of sources, with the Ca isotope system, known to reveal biology-related fractionations, allowed us to test the reliability of spruce ( Picea abies) growth rings as environmental archives through time (from 1916 to 1983) in a forest ecosystem affected by acid atmospheric deposition. Sr and Pb isotopes have already been applied in former tree-ring studies, whereas the suitability of Nd and Ca isotope systems is checked in the present article. Our Sr and Nd isotope data indicate an evolution in the cation origin with a geogenic origin for the oldest rings and an atmospheric origin for the youngest rings. Ca isotopes show, for their part, an isotopic homogeneity which could be linked to the very low weathering flux of Ca. Since this flux is weak the spruces’ root systems have pumped the Ca mainly from the organic matter-rich top-soil over the past century. In contrast, the annual growth rings studied are not reliable and suitable archives of past Pb pollution.

Abstract: 275 echantillons de sols ont ete preleves dans le bassin versant du Haut-Doubs situe dans le massif montagneux du Jura en fonction d’une strategie d’echantillonnage concue pour evaluer l’etendue de la variabilite spatiale de la contamination en 137 Cs dans la zone d’etude et identifier les principales sources de variation. Les sols presentent des activites surfaciques en 137 Cs comprises entre environ 1 000 et 12 000 Bq.m-2 avec une moyenne de l’ordre de 3 600 Bq.m2 . La variabilite spatiale des contaminations est elevee : l’activite surfacique montre des liens statistiquement significatifs avec l’altitude, la teneur en matiere organique et le mode d’occupation des sols, alors que les autres parametres etudies, type de sol et position topographique, ne constituent pas des sources significatives de variations. Ces resultats sont discutes en termes d’evaluation des contaminations radioactives en zone de montagne a une echelle regionale. Ils montrent que pour etre satisfaisante une strategie d’echantillonnage doit necessairement integrer les differents modes d’occupation des sols.

Abstract: La densite racinaire, l'inclinaison, l'extension laterale et en profondeur des racines ont ete mesurees sur des chenes pedoncules ages de 150 ans et etablis dans un sol brun lessive colluvial. Les materiaux pedologiques, limono-argileux puis argilo-limoneux, ont ete etudies en parallele. Ils sont accumules sur 4 m d'epaisseur au-dessus d'une roche calcaire karstifiee. Le sol actuel, ainsi que les horizons pedogeneises sous-jacents, permettent un developpement racinaire sans contrainte physique ou chimique, jusqu'a la roche. Les chenes pedoncules ont un systeme racinaire qui peut etre divise en 2 parties: le systeme de surface, qui s'etend jusqu'a 60 cm de profondeur et le systeme profond, situe en dessous de 60 cm (.)

Abstract: International audience; As part of a larger program aiming at assessing transfer and effects of metals in food webs, this work studied the spatial distribution of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn in 101 sub-surface soils, systematically sampled (regular grid of 1 x 1 km) over a large area around Annaba, the fourth most-populated city of Algeria. Cd and Cr exhibited only one abnormally high value, with all other concentrations being close to pedogeological background. Some places in the centre of the city were polluted by Pb (up to 823 mg.kg-1), probably due to aerial deposition from gasoline exhausts. Zn never exceeded regulatory limits over the whole sampling area. Cu was the only element for which a spatial autocorrelation occurred. A spatial interpolation by co-kriging allowed the identification of agricultural activities as the main Cu pollution source. Our approach revealed various anthropogenic pollution sources, more efficiently for large-scale patterns than for local abnormalities.

Abstract: International audience; The functional characteristics of forest soils in the mountainous regions in Bulgaria were assessed in order to obtain a better understanding of cesium distribution in soil. The aim of this paper is to describe the small-scale spatial variability of Cs-137 contamination in forest floor and surface soil layers in relation to regional and local characteristics. The mountainous regions of Bulgaria were strongly and inhomogeneously contaminated with cesium-137 due to the Chernobyl accident in 1986. The study confirmed that the cesium in forest soils from two mountainous regions of Bulgaria, SW Rila Mountain and Central Balkan, is located in the forest floor and upper 0-5 cm of soil. In a few cases from Central Balkan the maximum activities are found at a soil depth 5-10 cm. The measured values of cesium activity concentration in Aoh in Rila Mountain region are between 287.9 and 827.1 Bq kg− 1. Greater variations in cesium activity concentration in forest floor are determined for the plots from Central Balkan, where the measured values in Aof are between 85.7 and 2543 Bq kg− 1. The contamination density of Cs-137 in fine soil (b 1 mm) from Rila varies from 0.6 to 6.0 kBq m− 2 while in the Central Balkan plots it is between 1.2 and 19.6 kBq m− 2. The forest floor remains the main reservoir for cesium even years after pollution. The profile distribution of Cs-137 in soil systems shows a tendency of decrease toward deeper layers. The mountainous ecosystems with different types of vegetation were compared on the basis of estimated factor of accumulation (FA). The FA for conifers in Rila Mountain is from 0.28 to 0.69 and in the Central Balkans the FA is from 0.20 to 0.61. The data showed that the spatial distribution of Cs-137 in soil system depends on type of vegetation, humus type and altitude. Due to their low clay content and the high content of organic matter, the mountain forest soils can be considered an excellent ecosystem in which to study the mobility and behaviour of Cs-137 and its transfer into the soil-plant system. Due to the high levels of radiocesium contamination within the mountainous regions of the Central Balkan and the characteristics of soils, the highland mountain herbaceous ecosystems located in this region, in the authors' opinion, could be considered as risk zones to easier soil-to-plant transfer of cesium.

Abstract: International audience; Water flow in the soil-root-stem system was studied in a flooded riparian hardwood forest in the upper Rhine floodplain. The study was undertaken to identify the vertical distribution of water uptake by trees in a system where the groundwater is at a depth of less than 1 m. The three dominant ligneous species (Quercus robur, Fraxinus excelsior and Populus alba) were investigated for root structure (vertical extension of root systems), leaf and soil water potential (m), isotopic signal (18O) of soil water and xylem sap. The root density of oak and poplar was maximal at a depth of 20 to 60 cm, whereas the roots of the ash explored the surface horizon between 0 and 30 cm, which suggests a complementary tree root distribution in the hardwood forest. The flow density of oak and poplar was much lower than that of the ash. However, in the three cases the depth of soil explored by the roots reached 1·2 m, i.e. just above a bed of gravel. The oak roots had a large lateral distribution up to a distance of 15 m from the trunk. The water potential of the soil measured at 1 m from the trunk showed a zone of strong water potential between 20 and 60 cm deep. The vertical profile of soil water content varied from 0·40 to 0·50 cm3 cm-3 close to the water table, and 0·20 to 0·30 cm3 cm-3 in the rooting zone. The isotopic signal of stem water was constant over the whole 24-h cycle, which suggested that the uptake of water by trees occurred at a relatively constant depth. By comparing the isotopic composition of water between soil and plant, it was concluded that the water uptake occurred at a depth of 20 to 60 cm, which was in good agreement with the root and soil water potential distributions. The riparian forest therefore did not take water directly from the water table but from the unsaturated zone through the effect of capillarity.

Abstract: International audience; Since 1971, a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) with high dioxin emission levels has been in operation in Besançon, France. We recently found a 2.3-fold risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in the highest exposure zone using a Gaussian-type dispersion model as a proxy for dioxin exposure. However, the sources of PCDD/Fs in this area are a matter of controversy. The aim of this survey was therefore to examine the nature of the PCDD/F soil contamination in the surroundings of the MSWI to characterize whether more than one potential emission source could explain the presence of the PCDD/Fs. PCDD/F congener profiles were determined in 75 soil samples collected in the vicinity of the MSWI. They were compared according to the most environmentally impacted zones and to various spatial contrasts. PCDD/F concentrations ranged from 0.25 to 28.06 pg WHO-TEQ g(-1). Two different clustering algorithms identified the same main cluster (consisting of 73 samples). The remaining two soil samples composed either one, or two clusters. All clusters showed similar congener profiles. Moreover, no contrast was observed for congener distributions between complex and simple topographies, inside and outside the city boundary, the two most and the two least exposed areas, reflecting a common fingerprint. Congener profiles indicate that the area under influence of the MSWI is not subject to other point sources of PCDD/Fs. Since, the most polluting combustion chambers were recently shut down and replaced by a new one with up-to-date pollution control, slowly decreasing dioxin concentrations in the soils are to be expected.

Abstract: International audience; This paper documents the exposure pattern of a population of small mammals to bromadiolone over time in a field-scale follow up. This is the first assessment of the field-scale effect of such control operation on the availability of bromadiolone-exposed A. terrestris prey to nontarget predator species. It indicates that an important risk of poisoning of nontarget species does exist during large-scale field control operations with bromadiolone, which is contradictory to results obtained from laboratory experiments in the early 1980s and consistent with the secondary poisoning hazards due to repeated exposure regularly reported during the past 20 years.

Abstract: International audience; Whether low environmental doses of dioxin affect the general population is the matter of intense debate and controversy. In a previous study, we found a 2.3-fold risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma associated with residence in areas classified as highly exposed to dioxin emitted from a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) (Besançon, France). The main limitation lay within the use of a first-generation Gaussian-type dispersion model as a proxy for dioxin exposure, since its accuracy had not been assessed before. The aim of this study was to validate this geographic-based exposure through PCDD/F measurements from soil samples. PCDD/F concentration, pH, organic carbon concentration, cation exchange capacity, and geomorphology and ecology features were assessed for 75 sampling points. In simple terrain (i.e. northeast of the MSWI), a significant association was highlighted between modeled dioxin ground-level air concentrations and log-transformed measured dioxin soil concentrations with a strong gradient across exposure categories. Conversely, in a complex topography situation (i.e. southwest of the MSWI), the model overpredicted ground-level air concentrations, particularly in the high exposure zone. First-generation modeling provided a reliable proxy for dioxin exposure in simple terrain, reinforcing the results of our case-control study. However, a more advanced atmospheric diffusion model should have been used for refined assessment in complex terrain.

Abstract: International audience; We aimed to evaluate whether environmental factors affect the persistence of bromadiolone in baits in field treatment. Baits were distributed in three soils according to two types of distribution: (1) artificial galleries conform to agricultural practices; (2) storage cavities to mimic bait storage by voles. Persistence was evaluated for 30 days in galleries and 80 days in storage cavities in autumn and spring. The decrease of bromadiolone concentrations was described by a first-order kinetic model. In galleries, the half-lives ranged from 3.0 to 5.1 days in autumn and from 5.4 to 6.2 days in spring. The half-lives were similar between soils and seasons but the pattern of persistence differed lightly for two soils between seasons. Half-lives in storage cavities, 42.7 and 24.6 days in autumn and spring respectively, were longer than in galleries. To conclude, both soil characteristics and climatic conditions weakly influence persistence, while bait storage lengthens it dramatically.

Abstract: International audience; We studied Cs-137 contamination and radionuclide transfer in mountain forest ecosystems from Bulgaria. Here we show the first analyses of Cs-137 soil-to-plant transfer and we assess that it depends on the soil organic matter content and the specifics of the tree species. The forest litter is strong polluted with Cs-137 and is a barrier for its migration. In the upper 0-5 cm of the soil the Cs content ranges from 52 to 81 Bq kg–1 then decreases in deeper layers. The 1-year-old needles of spruce, fir, and Scots pine accumulate more cesium than the fine roots. The values of the needles transfer factor range between 0.3 and 0.58. The fine roots transfer factor varies between 0.1 and 0.32.
