1. A practical efficient and effective method for the Hamiltonian cycle problem that runs on a standard computer

Abstract

Given $N$ cities and $R < N^2 - N$ directed (unidirectional/one way) roads does there exist a tour of all $N$ cities stopping at each city exactly once using the given roads (a Hamiltonian cycle)? This Hamiltonian cycle problem (HCP) is an NP-complete problem, for which there is no known polynomial time solution algorithm. The HCP has important practical applications, for example, to logistical problems. It was claimed that an adiabatic quantum computer could solve an NP-complete problem faster than classical algorithms, but claim appears to have been debunked. Here we demonstrate an algorithm which runs on a standard computer that efficiently and effectively solves the HCP for at least up to 500 cities: We first optimized a simulated annealing based algorithm used for smaller sized HCP problems. Then we found that when a tour was deliberately inserted in a list of otherwise randomly chosen roads, crucially, if "extra" random roads are added to bring the total number of roads up to $0.58 N log_e N$ or more there is a 100% chance our algorithm will find a HC, but conversely when a list of roads does not include a pre-inserted tour random roads have to be added until there are $0.9 N log_e N$ roads to have a chance of finding a HC. We found similarly for a set of roads non-randomly chosen. Thus, the presence of a HC in a set of roads induces "connectivity" throughout the roads and a HC can be found with an insertion of a modest number of extra roads. Our algorithm also shows that only weakly non-local information is needed to find an HCP that is a global state., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

2. Using Simulated Annealing to Factor Numbers

Abstract

Almost all public secure communication relies on the inability to factor large numbers. There is no known analytic or classical numeric method to rapidly factor large numbers. Shor[1] has shown that a quantum computer can factor numbers in polynomial time but there is no practical quantum computer that can yet do such computations. We show that a simulated annealing[2] approach can be adapted to find factors of large numbers.

3. Delimiting Maximal Kissing Configurations in Four Dimensions

Abstract

How many unit $n-$dimensional spheres can simultaneously touch or kiss a central $n-$dimensional unit sphere? Beyond mathematics this question has implications for fields such as cryptography and the structure of biologic and chemical macromolecules. The kissing number is only known for dimensions 1-4, 8 and 24 (2, 6, 12, 24, 240, 19650, respectively) and only particularly obvious for dimensions one and two. Indeed, in four dimensions it is not even known if Platonic polytope unique to that dimension known as the 24-cell is the unique kissing configuration. We have not been able to prove that the 24-cell is unique, but, using a physical approach utilizing the hopf map from four to three dimensions, we for the first time delimit the possible other configurations which could be kissing in four dimensions.

4. Do All Spherical Viruses Have Icosahedral Symmetry?

Abstract

Recent high resolution structures for viral capsids with 12, 32 and 72 subunits ($T1$, $T3$ and $T7$ viruses) have confirmed theoretical predictions of an icosadeltahedral structure with 12 subunits having five nearest neighbors (pentamers) and $(10T+2)-12$ subunits having six nearest neighbor subunits (hexamers). Here we note that theoretical considerations of energy strain for $T4$, $T9$ $T16$ and $T25$ viruses by aligned pentamers and energy strain along with the sheer number of possible arrangement of pentamers as the number of subunits grows, and simulations for such numbers of subunits make an icosadeltahedral configuration either miraculously unlikely or indicate that there must be a principle of capsid assembly of unprecedented fidelity in Nature. We predict, for example, that high resolution data will show $T4$ capsids to have $D_{5h}$ not icosahedral symmetry.

6. A Novel Symmetric Four Dimensional Polytope Found Using Optimization Strategies Inspired by Thomson's Problem of Charges on a Sphere

Abstract

Inspired by, and using methods of optimization derived from classical three dimensional electrostatics, we note a novel beautiful symmetric four dimensional polytope we have found with 80 vertices. We also describe how the method used to find this symmetric polytope, and related methods can potentially be used to find good examples for the kissing and packing problems in D dimensions.

7. Defect free global minima in Thomson's problem of charges on a sphere

Abstract

Given $N$ unit points charges on the surface of a unit conducting sphere, what configuration of charges minimizes the Coulombic energy $\sum_{i>j=1}^N 1/r_{ij}$? Due to an exponential rise in good local minima, finding global minima for this problem, or even approaches to do so has proven extremely difficult. For \hbox{$N = 10(h^2+hk+k^2)+ 2$} recent theoretical work based on elasticity theory, and subsequent numerical work has shown, that for $N \sim >500$--1000 adding dislocation defects to a symmetric icosadeltahedral lattice lowers the energy. Here we show that in fact this approach holds for all $N$, and we give a complete or near complete catalogue of defect free global minima., Comment: Revisions in Tables and References

8. New Global Minima for Thomson's Problem of Charges on a Sphere

Abstract

Using numerical arguments we find that for $N$ = 306 a tetrahedral configuration ($T_h$) and for N=542 a dihedral configuration ($D_5$) are likely the global energy minimum for Thomson's problem of minimizing the energy of $N$ unit charges on the surface of a unit conducting sphere. These would be the largest $N$ by far, outside of the icosadeltahedral series, for which a global minimum for Thomson's problem is known. We also note that the current theoretical understanding of Thomson's problem does not rule out a symmetric configuration as the global minima for N=306 and 542. We explicitly find that analogues of the tetrahedral and dihedral configurations for $N$ larger than 306 and 542, respectively, are not global minima, thus helping to confirm the theory of Dodgson and Moore (Phys. Rev. B 55, 3816 (1997)) that as $N$ grows dislocation defects can lower the lattice strain of symmetric configurations and concomitantly the energy. As well, making explicit previous work by ourselves and others, for $N<1000$ we give a full accounting of icosadeltahedral configuration which are not global minima and those which appear to be, and discuss how this listing and our results for the tetahedral and dihedral configurations may be used to refine theoretical understanding of Thomson's problem., Comment: 1- Manuscript revised. 2- A new global minimum found for a dihedral (D_5) configuration found for N=542

9. The Number System of the Old European Script

Abstract

The oldest (c. 4000 BC) undeciphered language is the Old European Script known from approximately 940 inscribed objects (82% of inscriptions on pottery) found in excavations in the Vinca-Tordos region Transylvania. Also, it is not known for what the script was used, but the prevailing theory is that it had a religious purpose. We note that more than a quarter of the inscriptions are on the bottom of a pot-seemingly a most illogical and inglorious place to pay homage to a deity. Consistent with this, in a survey we performed of pots and containers in modern locations, we could not find a single religious inscription. Here we delineate the number system of the Old European Script, and propose that the Old European Script may have been used for economic purposes. The delineation of the number signs of the Old European Script should facilitate further understanding of the rest of the script and of the Old European culture, especially as new archaeologic findings emerge.

10. First Description of Discrete Stars Composing the Milk Way in Thomas Watson's Hekatompathia (1582)

We note that the first unambiguous description of the Milk Way as being composed of a large number of discrete stars is in Sonnet 31 of Thomas Watson's (d 1592) Hekatompathia (1582), nearly 30 years before Galileo's description. We discuss implications of this early description.

11. Stueckelberg Redux: How Classical Gravity Can Induce Changes in Particle Lifetimes

Abstract

ECG Stueckelberg (1905-1984) often published important theories years before those who would receive the Nobel Prize for their discoery. Perhpas other jewels may remain the work of this prescient genius. In a short paper in 1957--coming shortly on the heels of the suggestion and experimental confirmation of parity non-conservation by the weak force--Stueckelberg noted that sine there exist completely antisymmetric four-tensors (e) with covariant derivative zero, non-parity conserving forces can readily be accomodated by general relativity as the product of such a tensor and the non-parity conserving terms. Stueckelberg also pointed out that in classical general relativity the covariant derivative, D, of e is De=(-g)^1/2*d[e(-g)^-1/2]=0, where g is the determinant of the metric tensor, and d is an ordinary derivative. Since g is non-zero, if g is constant, e is a constant and mean proper particle lifetimes are the same in all Lorenz frames. I point out that Stueckelberg's paper has three further deep and important implications. (1) We see how gravity-- matter--can influence particle lifetimes by forcing the e tensor to be non-constant to have to "adjust" so that d[e(-g)^-1/2] is zero, and we can get some quantitative feel for the magnitude of this effect. (2) If any difference in the lifetimes of particles and antiparticles are to occur, in the absence of Lorenz invariance violation, it would be in regions where dg is non-zero. (3) If indeed, differences in particle and antiparticle lifetimes are found, before they can be ascibed to effects of quantum gravity, supersymmetry, or string theory, the effects of classical gravity need to be accounted for.

12. Why the 3D Writhe of Ideal Knots and Links Is Quantized and Additive

Abstract

Besides mathematical interest, knots and knot theory have important applications in physics, chemistry, and biology. Stasiak and colleagues devised a constructive method for a knot "energy" using a Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm to minimize the length of rope needed to realize a given knot for a rope of a fixed diameter. They called the resulting rendering of the knot the "ideal" configuration. They have found (i) that the 3-dimensional (3D) writhe of the ideal configuration of a knot appeared, empirically, to be quantized; (ii) empirically, the 3D writhe of the ideal configuration was additive over composition of knots; and (iii) the 3D writhe of ideal configuration of alternating knots (which have a projection in which crossings alternate between over and under as one transverses the knot in a fixed direction) seems to be equal, to 1*T + 3/7*(W-B), where T is the "Tait number," and W and B are the number of the white and black regions in the checkerboard coloring of the knot. It is still not clear why properties i-iii might be true. Here I show that all these empirical findings can be related to the fact that T and W-B can be proven to be additive over composition of alternating knots. In particular, (1) the 3D writhe of ideal configurations is likely only to be additive for composition of alternating knots, and (2) remarkably, the geometrical structure of all alternating (even prime) knots is determined by the three smallest knots.

13. Possible Mechanism for Superconductivity in Sulfur - Common Theme for Unconventional Superconductors?

Abstract

Sulfur has recently been found to be a superconductor at high pressure. At ~93 GPa Tc is 10.1 K, and the sulfur is in a base-centered orthorhombic (b.c.o) structure. At ~160 GPa Tc is 17 K and sulfur is in a rhobohedral (b-Po) structure. The mechanism for superconductivity in sulfur is not known; in particular, a band-structure calculation does not find superconductivity in sulfur until 500 GPa. Following work by Anderson, in a 2D strongly interacting non-fermi liquid system with some degree of disorder at T=0, the only known conducting state is a superconductor. Following this idea it has been suggested that both the HTc cuprates and the 2D electron gas systems are superconductors with planar conducting planes. Similarly, here we suggest that the mechanism for conductivity in sulfur are 2D conducting planes which emerge as the planare rings in sulfur at lower pressure pucker at higher pressures (b.c.o. and b-Po). 17. Searching for Shakespeare in the Stars

Abstract

The question of the authorship of Shakespeare's plays has long been debated. The two leading contenders are W. Shakspere (1564-1616) and Edward de Vere the 13th Earl of Oxford (1550-1604). Here I note that Shakespeare's references to important events and discoveries in astronomy and geophysics in 1572 and 1600, but not to similarly important events of 1604, 1609 and 1610, especially given Shakespeare's frequent references to and knowledge of the physical sciences, might be able to shed some light on the authorship question.

Abstract

On the NASA 2020 rover mission to Jezero crater, the remote determination of the texture, mineralogy and chemistry of rocks is essential to quickly and thoroughly characterize an area and to optimize the selection of samples for return to Earth. As part of the Perseverance payload, SuperCam is a suite of five techniques that provide critical and complementary observations via Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Time-Resolved Raman and Luminescence (TRR/L), visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VISIR), high-resolution color imaging (RMI), and acoustic recording (MIC). SuperCam operates at remote distances, primarily 2-7 m, while providing data at sub-mm to mm scales. We report on SuperCam's science objectives in the context of the Mars 2020 mission goals and ways the different techniques can address these questions. The instrument is made up of three separate subsystems: the Mast Unit is designed and built in France; the Body Unit is provided by the United States; the calibration target holder is contributed by Spain, and the targets themselves by the entire science team. This publication focuses on the design, development, and tests of the Mast Unit; companion papers describe the other units. The goal of this work is to provide an understanding of the technical choices made, the constraints that were imposed, and ultimately the validated performance of the flight model as it leaves Earth, and it will serve as the foundation for Mars operations and future processing of the data. Abstract

The SuperCam instrument suite provides the Mars 2020 rover, Perseverance, with a number of versatile remote-sensing techniques that can be used at long distance as well as within the robotic-arm workspace. These include laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), remote time-resolved Raman and luminescence spectroscopies, and visible and infrared (VISIR; separately referred to as VIS and IR) reflectance spectroscopy. A remote micro-imager (RMI) provides high-resolution color context imaging, and a microphone can be used as a stand-alone tool for environmental studies or to determine physical properties of rocks and soils from shock waves of laser-produced plasmas. SuperCam is built in three parts: The mast unit (MU), consisting of the laser, telescope, RMI, IR spectrometer, and associated electronics, is described in a companion paper. The on-board calibration targets are described in another companion paper. Here we describe SuperCam's body unit (BU) and testing of the integrated instrument. The BU, mounted inside the rover body, receives light from the MU via a 5.8 m optical fiber. The light is split into three wavelength bands by a demultiplexer, and is routed via fiber bundles to three optical spectrometers, two of which (UV and violet; 245-340 and 385-465 nm) are crossed Czerny-Turner reflection spectrometers, nearly identical to their counterparts on ChemCam. The third is a high-efficiency transmission spectrometer containing an optical intensifier capable of gating exposures to 100 ns or longer, with variable delay times relative to the laser pulse. This spectrometer covers 535-853 nm ( 105 - 7070 cm − 1 Raman shift relative to the 532 nm green laser beam) with 12 cm − 1 full-width at half-maximum peak resolution in the Raman fingerprint region. The BU electronics boards interface with the rover and control the instrument, returning data to the rover. Thermal systems maintain a warm temperature during cruise to Mars to avoid contamination on the optics, and cool the detectors during operations on Mars. Results obtained with the integrated instrument demonstrate its capabilities for LIBS, for which a library of 332 standards was developed. Examples of Raman and VISIR spectroscopy are shown, demonstrating clear mineral identification with both techniques. Luminescence spectra demonstrate the utility of having both spectral and temporal dimensions. Abstract

Numerous geosciences samples display a multi-scale mineralogical heterogeneity for which it is challenging to obtain spatially resolved quantitative chemical data. It is the case for chondritic meteorites, which can contain up to 10 different phases with grain size ranging from the nanometer to the millimeter. We developed a method providing multiple physical and chemical information by advanced scanning electron microscopy (SEM), hyperspectral energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and electron probe micro-analyses (EPMA). The method includes: i) infra-micrometric low-voltage EDX mapping and innovative post-acquisition hyperspectral data analysis (based on both clustering and multiple linear least square fitting) which allow phase mapping and quantification of the modal abundances; ii) EPMA of chemical end-members to upgrade the phase map into a quantified chemical map; iii) physical modeling of the EDX background, used as a proxy of the density. Density maps can be obtained with a precision of ~10%; iv) determination of the bulk sample composition by combining modal abundances, chemical analysis and density measurements. The approach is applied to three well-known chondrites (Murchison, Paris and Orgueil), showing heterogeneous grain sizes and mineralogy. Areas of ~250 ∗ 250 μm2 were mapped with a pixel size of 250 nm to determine the modal abundances, size distribution, circularity and densities of all phases, as well as the matrix bulk compositions. Taking bulk wet chemistry data as reference, ACADEMY leads to a better match than published defocused beam EPMA measurements. We demonstrate that choosing a Fe-rich, hydrated standard (a biotite) to quantify phyllosilicate by EPMA improves the quantification by up to 10%, and we ultimately retrieve the Mg/Si ratio with a 1% precision. We called this method ACADEMY for Analyzing the Composition, the modal Abundance and the Density using Electron MicroscopY. A code was developed and was made available online so that ACADEMY can be applied to other materials.

Abstract

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) provides chemical information from atomic, ionic, and molecular emissions from which geochemical composition can be deciphered. Analysis of LIBS spectra in cases where targets are observed at different distances, as is the case for the ChemCam instrument on the Mars rover Curiosity, which performs analyses at distances between 2 and 7.4 m is not a simple task. In our previous work we showed that spectral distance correction based on a proxy spectroscopic standard created from first-shot dust observations on Mars targets ameliorates the distance bias in multivariate-based elemental-composition predictions of laboratory data. In this work, we correct an expanded set of neutral and ionic spectral emissions for distance bias in the ChemCam data set. By using and testing different selection criteria to generate multiple proxy standards, we find a correction that minimizes the difference in spectral intensity measured at two different distances and increases spectral reproducibility. When the quantitative performance of distance correction is assessed, there is improvement for SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, FeOT, Na2O, K2O, that is, for most of the major rock forming elements, and for the total major-element weight percent predicted. However, for MgO the method does not provide improvements while for TiO2, it yields inconsistent results. In addition, we have observed that many emission lines do not behave consistently with distance, evidenced from laboratory analogue measurements and ChemCam data. This limits the effectiveness of the method.
