Changes in species diversity can be an indicator of ecosystem disturbance, impairment, or recovery. Estimating sampling effort needed to adequately represent stream fish assemblages is necessary for informing conservation actions. Increased sampling intensity can increase species detection, affecting the accuracy and precision of biodiversity indices. Seining is commonly used in fish surveys in sand-bottomed streams of the western USA. Here, we sampled 20, 200-m long stream sites each with 40 consecutive seine hauls to determine how increased within-site effort affected measures of species diversity. An average of 10 seine hauls were required to collect 75% of species present at sites in 40 seine hauls, while 18 seine hauls were required to collect 100% of species observed at a site sampled with 40 hauls. Simpson’s diversity index was highly variable when fewer than 7 seine hauls were performed at each site but stabilized when effort was > 15 seine hauls per site. Total dissimilarity and β-diversity components were variable under low sampling effort and also stabilized when effort reached 15 seine hauls per site. However, sampling with more than 18–20 seine hauls per site yielded few additional species. In shallow, sand-bed streams, we suggest sampling with α-diversity and variation in β-diversity. Increased effort of 15–20 seine hauls per 200 m of stream captured nearly all species present in 40 hauls per 200 m and stabilized species evenness and β-diversity indices.

Few studies have evaluated the effects of large wildfires on downstream non-salmonid fish assemblages. Using multi-year (2009–2015) data from fish assemblage surveys and high-frequency water quality monitoring, we analyzed within-site responses of a cypriniform-dominated fish assemblage at two sites located > 20 km downstream of a 633 km2 wildfire in 2011 in the Rio Grande watershed in New Mexico, USA. Season had a weak influence on fish assemblage (fish) catch rate, richness, and evenness at the upstream site, but it had a strong negative influence (during spring/winter) on fish catch rate and richness at the downstream site. Flexible transit systems are a way to address challenges associated with conventional fixed route and fully demand responsive systems. Existing studies indicate that such systems are often planned and designed without established guidelines, and optimization techniques are rarely implemented on actual flexible systems. This study presents a hybrid transit system where the degree of flexibility can vary from a fixed route service (with no flexibility) to a fully flexible transit system. Such a system is expected to be beneficial in areas where the best transit solution lies between the fixed route and fully flexible systems. Continuous approximation techniques are implemented to model and optimize the stop spacing on a fixed route corridor, as well as the boundaries of the flexible region in a corridor. Both user and agency costs are considered in the optimization process. A numerical analysis compares various service areas and demand densities using input variables with magnitudes similar to those of real-world case studies. Sensitivity analysis is performed for service headway, percent of demand served curb-to-curb, and user and agency cost weights in the optimization process. The analytical models are evaluated through simulations. The hybrid system proposed here achieves estimated user benefits of up to 35% when compared with fixed route systems, under different case scenarios. Flexible systems are particularly beneficial for serving corridors with low or uncertain demand. This provides value for corridors with low demand density as well as communities in which transit ridership has dropped significantly because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The transportation sector is considered one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in metropolitan areas. Any efforts to reduce these emissions require strategic management of multiple transportation modes. This paper presents a method to identify opportunities to reduce GHG emissions by expanding commuter bus services and providing incentives to shift commuters from private cars to transit. The approach uses a nested multinomial logit model for mode choice in a region where modes include driving alone, carpooling, walking, cycling, and using four possible transit modes (ferry, commuter rail, rapid transit, and bus) by walk-access or drive-access. A model of existing conditions was calibrated with data from the Boston metropolitan area. Using an emission factor model based on average speeds from the California Air Resources Board, the net effect of a new commuter bus service on GHG emissions from transportation is estimated. Potential GHG reductions are weighed against the capital and operating costs of new transit services to quantify the cost-effectiveness of new commuter bus services for isolated origin-destination pairs. This modeling framework is used to optimize fares and bus frequency to identify the corridors with the most cost-effective potential for GHG reduction. Results are presented for the Boston region, demonstrating the feasibility of implementation and the potential magnitude of benefits for cost-effectively reducing GHG emissions associated with transportation. This paper presents a continuum approximation model for the operating cost of demand responsive transit (DRT) systems in large urban networks. Applications of the proposed model shed light on ways demand and characteristics of the DRT system affect major components of cost: fleet, vehicle hours, and vehicle miles traveled. Verifying the relationship with empirical data, results show an accurate approximation of the operating cost for the paratransit system in New Jersey. Furthermore, we develop a systematic approach for evaluating the efficiency of policy implementations for DRTs. Finally, the circumstances where coordinated taxis could be a cost reduction strategy are identified.

The majority of existing navigation systems only account for a single aspect of the route choice, like travel time or distance, in finding the optimal route for the trips in the network. In this research, we first identify a range of diverse factors that travelers take into account in their route choice decision in the network. A stated preference survey is conducted to show the heterogeneity in the preferences of users and its dependence to the purpose of the trips over the weekdays and weekends. Interestingly, results of the survey show that road safety is the most influential factor in the route choice decision of the average participants over weekends, exceeding even the travel time, and participants give more importance to the scenic quality of the routes for their weekend trips in comparison to their weekday trips. The results of the second part of the survey also indicate that in 27% of the cases participants choose routes other than the ones suggested by navigation systems, and 33% of the times that they take the suggested routes, they modify these routes according to their own preferences. The partial inability of existing navigation systems to suggest the routes that match the preferences of users can be attributed to ignoring (1) the diversity in influential factors and (2) the heterogeneity in preferences of the users by these systems. We propose a dynamic mixed logit route choice model to include the effects of information and learning to estimate parameters of a multivariable utility function for individual users based on their own historical route choice data over time. Finally, we present the concept of a smart navigation system that can gather the required information from real-time and online sources to suggest the routes that best match the users’ own preferences.

Travelers consider the average duration and the reliability of travel time when choosing their route. However, the relative importance of average travel time and reliability not only depends on the purpose of the trip, but also varies from one person to another. Users seek to minimize their travel costs leading to an equilibrium condition in which they choose routes in such a way that they cannot reduce the general cost of their own trip. In this paper, we adopt the concept of the efficient frontier to represent the equilibrium route choice of the heterogeneous users in a network under travel time variability. Then, we use the primary properties of the efficient frontier to propose a mathematical formulation for the route choice problem for a discrete or continuous distribution of sensitivity of users to variations in route travel times. An analytical-based algorithm is designed to assign the heterogeneous demand to the network. Efficiency of the proposed algorithm in solving the route choice problem is also compared in a numerical example with a classic iterative method with a smoothing factor.

The land-use pattern for many cities is a central business district surrounded by sprawling suburbs. This pattern can lead to an inefficient and congestion-prone transportation system due to a reliance on automobiles. This is because high-capacity transit is inefficient in low-density areas where insufficient travelers can access transit. This also poses an equity concern as the monetary cost of faster and more expensive travel disproportionately burdens low income travelers, especially when fixed congestion pricing is imposed. This paper presents a deterministic approximation of a discrete choice model for mixed access and mainline transportation modes, meaning that travelers may use different modes to access a mainline system, such as transit. The purpose is to provide a tractable computationally efficient model to address the first/last mile problem using a system-wide pricing policy that can account for heterogeneous values of time; a problem that is difficult to solve efficiently using a stochastic model. The model is structured for a catchment area around a central access point for a mainline mode, approximating choice by comparing modal utility costs. The underlying utility model accommodates both fixed prices (e.g., parking, fixed tolls, and fares) and distance-based unit prices (e.g. taxi fare, bike-share, and distance tolls) that may be set in a coordinated way with respect to value of time. Using numerical analysis to assess accuracy, the deterministic model achieved results within 3% of a stochastic logit-based model, and within 7% of measured values. The optimization of prices using the final model achieved a 22% reduction in generalized travel time and a 30% improvement in the Gini inequity measure from 0.2 to 0.14.

The morning commute problem, introduced in Vickrey [1969. “Congestion Theory and Transport Investment.” American Economic Review 56: 251–260], addresses the equilibrium trip schedule of the users for commuting through a single bottleneck with fixed capacity over the morning peak. In this paper, we adapt the concept of the efficient frontier from Portfolio Theory [Markowitz, H. 1952. “Portfolio Selection.” The Journal of Finance 7 (1): 77–91] to propose an analytical solution to the morning commute problem with a general distribution of the schedule preferences over time and a continuous joint distribution of schedule penalty preferences over the population of the commuters. The operating cost of a demand responsive transit (DRT) system strictly depends on the quality of service that it offers to its users. An operating agency seeks to minimize operating costs while maintaining the quality of service while users experience costs associated with scheduling, waiting, and traveling within the system. In this paper, an analytical model is employed to approximate the agency's operating cost for running a DRT system with dynamic demand and the total generalized cost that users experience as a result of the operating decisions. The approach makes use of Vickrey's (1969) congestion theory to model the dynamics of the DRT system in the equilibrium condition and approximate the generalized cost for users when the operating capacity is inadequate to serve the time-dependent demand over the peak period without excess delay. The efficiency of the DRT system can be improved by optimizing one of three parameters that define the agency's operating decision: (1) the operating capacity of the system, (2) the number of passengers that have requested a pick-up and are awaiting service, and (3) the distribution of requested times for service from the DRT system. A schedule management strategy and dynamic pricing strategies are presented that can be implemented to manage demand and reduce the total cost of the DRT system by keeping the number of waiting requests optimized over the peak period. In the end, proposed optimization strategies are compared using a numerical example.

This paper combines existing data sources with an emerging technology for object detection to estimate the number of passengers that are left behind on subway platforms. The methodology proposed in this study has been developed and applied to the subway in Boston, Massachusetts. Trains are not currently equipped with automated passenger counters, and farecard data is only collected on entry to the system. An analysis of crowding from inferred origin–destination data was used to identify stations with high likelihood of passengers being left behind during peak hours. Results from North Station during afternoon peak hours are presented here. Image processing and object detection software was used to count the number of passengers that were left behind on station platforms from surveillance video feeds. Automatically counted passengers and train operations data were used to develop logistic regression models that were calibrated to manual counts of left behind passengers on a typical weekday with normal operating conditions. The models were validated against manual counts of left behind passengers on a separate day with normal operations. The results show that by fusing passenger counts from video with train operations data, the number of passengers left behind during a day’s rush period can be estimated within 10% of their actual number.

Urban street networks exhibit hypercongested traffic states in which flow and speed drop as vehicles crowd the network. An important feature of aggregate traffic models based on the macroscopic fundamental diagram is that the dynamics of congestion are represented in a physically realistic way. For peak demand in a city in which all travelers use cars, hypercongested states are known to be unstable in equilibrium. In real cities travelers are able to choose whether to use cars or public transit during a peak period. This paper presents a model of the equilibrium for cars and transit, recognizing that hypercongestion often arises when modes are not priced. It is shown that hypercongested traffic can be part of a stable, steady equilibrium state when cars and high-capacity transit are used simultaneously. The paper also shows that coordinated fixed prices for cars and transit can always prevent hypercongested traffic states from developing.

Identifying the generators of paratransit trips by persons with disabilities is important to comprehend the current demand patterns and forecast future demand. Only a handful of studies have been conducted so far to identify the generators of paratransit trips and most focused on the home end of the trips. Given some of the inconsistencies in past studies and the scarcity of studies on the generators of trips away from home, this study attempts to identify the generators of paratransit trips beginning and ending at clients’ homes and away from home. It uses an extremely large dataset consisting of 1.91 million trips made by NJ TRANSIT’s Access Link clients, socioeconomic data from the American Community Survey, employment data from the Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics, and establishment data from Dun and Bradstreet. The analytical methods include an ordinary least squares model (OLS) and several spatial generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) to identify the characteristics of census block groups associated with Access Link trip generation at home and away from home, Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis to identify the types of establishments located in the immediate vicinity of drop-offs, and a multinomial logit model (MNL) to examine the relationship between the characteristics of the establishments in the vicinity of drop-offs and the characteristics of the dropped-off clients. Together, the various analyses provide useful insights about paratransit trip generators at the macro and micro levels. Some implications of the findings are discussed.

Identifying the factors that influence taxi demand is very important for understanding where and when people use taxis. A large set of GPS data from New York City taxis is used along with demographic, socioeconomic, and employment data to identify the factors that drive taxi demand. A technique was developed to measure and map transit accessibility on the basis of transit access time (TAT) to understand the relationship between taxi use and transit service. The taxi data were categorized by pickups and drop-offs at different times of day. A multiple linear regression model was estimated for each hour of the day to model pickups and another to model drop-offs. Six important explanatory variables that influence taxi trips were identified: population, education, age, income, TAT, and employment. A novel methodology used taxi global position system data and high-resolution transit schedule information to compare travel times and travel fares of the two main nondriving travel modes for airport ground access: taxi and transit. Five origin–destination pairs between Pennsylvania Station in New York City and three airports in the New York region were used as an example to demonstrate these methods. An analysis of total trip cost considered both travel time and expenditures on fare. A binary logit model was used to model the mode choice of travelers. The results indicate that transit is the more likely choice during most of the day except the midnight period when transit service has longer headways. A sensitivity analysis shows the relationship between the value of time and total trip cost per passenger for different numbers of passengers traveling together and at different times of day. The higher the value of time and the number of passengers in a group, the more likely it is that a taxi is chosen for airport trips. The attractiveness of one mode relative to the other varies spatially and temporally according to the travel time and price. This paper focuses on understanding temporal variation of total cost of each mode and the effect that this variation is likely to have on mode share.

In addition to this more general framework considering two modes, the paper focuses on the evening rush, when commuters travel from work to home. Commuters choose which mode to use and when to travel in order to minimize the generalized cost of their own trips, including queueing delay and penalties for deviation from a preferred schedule of arrival and departure to and from work. The user equilibrium for the isolated morning and evening commutes are shown to be asymmetric because the schedule penalty in the morning is the differ- ence between the departure and wished curves, and the schedule penalty in the evening is the difference between the arrival and wished curves. It is shown that the system optimum in the morning and evening peaks are symmetric because queueing delay is eliminated and the optimal arrival curves are the same as the departure curves. The paper then considers both the morning and evening peaks together for a single mode bottleneck (all cars) with identical travelers that share the same wished times. For a schedule penalty function of the morning departure and evening arrival times that is positive definite and has certain properties, a user equilibrium is shown to exist in which commuters travel in the same order in both peaks. The result is used to illustrate the user equilibrium for two cases: (i) commuters have decoupled schedule preferences in the morning and evening, and (ii) commuters must work a fixed shift length but have flexibility when to start. Finally, a special case is considered with cars and transit: commuters have the same wished order in the morning and evening peaks. Data from taxicabs equipped with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are collected by many transportation agencies, including the Taxi and Limousine Commission in New York City. The raw data sets are too large and complex to analyze directly with many conventional tools, but when the big data are appropriately processed and integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), sophisticated demand models and visualizations of vehicle movements can be developed. These models are useful for providing insights about the nature of travel demand as well as the performance of the street network and the fleet of vehicles that use it. This paper demonstrates how big data collected from GPS in taxicabs can be used to model taxi demand and supply, using 10 months of taxi trip records from New York City. The resulting count models are used to identify locations and times of day when there is a mismatch between the availability of taxicabs and the demand for taxi service in the city. The findings are useful for making decisions about how to regulate and manage the fleet of taxicabs and other transportation systems in New York City.

The morning commute problem for a single bottleneck is extended to model mode choice in an urban area with time-dependent demand. This extension recognizes that street space is shared by cars and public transit. It is assumed that transit is operated independently of traffic conditions, and that when it is operated it consumes a fixed amount of space. As a first step, a single fixed-capacity bottleneck that can serve both cars and transit is studied. Commuters choose which mode to use and when to travel in order to minimize the generalized cost of their own trip. The transit agency chooses the headway and when to operate. Transit operations reduce the bottleneck’s capacity for cars by a fixed amount. The following results are shown for this type of bottleneck: 1. If the transit agency charges a fixed fare and operates at a given headway, and only when there is demand, then there is a unique user equilibrium. 2. If the transit agency chooses its headway and time of operation for the common good, then there is a unique system optimum. 3. Time-dependent prices exist to achieve system optimum. Finally, it is also shown that results 2 and 3 apply to urban networks.

Assessments of the assumptions underlying catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) data are necessary to determine whether catch data provide a reliable relative abundance metric. Rio Grande silvery minnow Hybognathus amarus were collected with fyke nets from seasonally flooded habitats of the Rio Grande in New Mexico to determine habitat use by the species during spring runoff in May and June of 2008 and 2009. The CPUE was calculated as fish/h to assess relative abundance among sites and sampling dates due to differences between the durations of the samples in 2008 and 2009. The assumption that the number of fish captured with fyke nets is proportional to effort was assessed by using a multiple-regression model. Catch per unit effort was also compared over the course of a day to determine whether diel differences in catch rate exist. Recent experimental work has shown that the average flow and average density within certain urban networks are related by a unique, reproducible curve known as the Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD). For networks consisting of a single route this MFD can be predicted analytically; but when the networks consist of multiple overlapping routes experience shows that the flows observed in congestion for a given density are less than those one would predict if the routes were homogeneously congested and did not overlap. These types of networks also tend to jam at densities that are only a fraction of their routes’ average jam density. This paper provides an explanation for these phenomena. It shows that, even for perfectly homogeneous networks with spatially uniform travel patterns, symmetric equilibrium patterns with equal flows and densities across all links are unstable if the average network density is sufficiently high. Instead, the stable equilibrium patterns are asymmetric. For this reason the networks jam at lower densities and exhibit lower flows than one would predict if traffic was evenly distributed. Analysis of small idealized networks that can be treated as simple dynamical systems shows that these networks undergo a bifurcation at a network-specific critical density such that for lower densities the MFDs have predictably high flows and are univalued, and for higher densities the order breaks down. Microsimulations show that this bifurcation also manifests itself in large symmetric networks. In this case though, the bifurcation is more pernicious: once the network density exceeds the critical value, the stable state is one of complete gridlock with zero flow. It is therefore important to ensure in real-world applications that a network’s density never be allowed to approach this critical value. Fortunately, analysis shows that the bifurcation’s critical density increases considerably if some of the drivers choose their routes adaptively in response to traffic conditions. So far, for networks with adaptive drivers, bifurcations have only been observed in simulations, but not (yet) in real life. This could be because real drivers are more adaptive than simulated drivers and/or because the observed real networks were not sufficiently congested.

This paper analyzes urban multimodal transportation systems in an aggregated way. To describe the aggregate behavior of traffic in cities, use is made of an idea that is now receiving some attention: the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD). We demonstrate through simulation how the MFD can be used to monitor and control a real network, in this case a portion of San Francisco, using readily available input data. We then show how different modes interact on the same network and discuss how these interactions might be incorporated into an MFD for multimodal networks. The work unveils two main results: first, it confirms recent results showing that restricting access to a city's congested areas can improve mobility for all travelers, including those who endure the restrictions; and second, that dedicating street space to collective transport modes can improve accessibility for all modes, even those from which space is taken away.

In this research, we develop an optimal credit-based pricing scheme for a single bottleneck with time-dependent demand and heterogeneous user preferences. For this purpose, we first propose an analytical model for dynamically pricing the bottleneck. Accounting for the independent distributions of the schedule penalty factors and the value of time of the commuters can significantly improve the accuracy of the pricing strategy. Moreover, implementing such a strategy using a revenue-neutral credit-based pricing scheme allows the value of the credits to be determined by the interaction between the users in the equilibrium condition of the market. Hence, there would be no need to charge all commuters over the peak period. Instead, the proposed strategy allocates the money raised from the “credit buyers” to subsidize the commutes of the “credit sellers” in order to incentivize the commuters to form a uniform distribution of arrival times over the peak period. Using tradable credits to design a revenue-neutral pricing strategy for the bottleneck can raise public support by improving the social welfare of the users. The proposed credit-based pricing strategy also have broad applications for optimizing the urban networks using the concept of the macroscopic fundamental diagram (see Amirgholy et al., 2017).

The analysis presented here is of a cost benefit evaluation of a road diet conversion, reducing an urban arterial street from two-lanes in each direction to one-lane in each direction with a middle turning lane. Livingston Avenue is located in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and is an oversized arterial corridor accessing the center of the city. The costs include increases in travel time from the capacity reduction. These are modeled with a VISSIM micro-simulation of the street. Safety benefits of road diets are one of the main reasons that these are pursued. Evidence on the safety effect suggests that road diet conversions of arterial streets in urban areas will achieve about a 19% reduction in crashes. The benefits of crash reductions and the costs of increased delay are evaluated based on the value of statistical lives saved versus the cost of travel time. This is done for various different scenarios and includes robustness checks. Results overwhelmingly find benefits exceed costs over a 20 year period.

Geomorphic changes resulting from the construction of dams, irrigation diversion structures, and flood control levees has separated the Rio Grande from its floodplain contributing to the decline of native fish species including the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow (Hybognathus amarus). The species is currently restricted to 280-km of the river in New Mexico. Since 2006, the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission has constructed 121 ha of floodplain habitat between the river levees to improve habitat. To determine if constructed habitats were being utilized by the Rio Grande silvery minnow and the fish community, a presence/absence study was conducted on eight constructed floodplains during 2008 and 2009, and one natural floodplain in 2008. A total of 14 481 fish were captured in fyke nets during both years: 3528 fish were captured from constructed floodplains and 8410 were captured from the natural floodplain in 2008: 2543 fish were captured from the constructed floodplains in 2009. Of this total, 11 602 of the fish were Rio Grande silvery minnow: 2180 Rio Grande silvery minnow were collected from constructed floodplains and 7356 from the natural floodplain in 2008; 2057 Rio Grande silvery minnow were collected from constructed floodplains in 2009. Gravid female and male expressing milt were collected both years. A total of 1173 unidentified larval fish and 363 Rio Grande silvery minnow eggs were also collected during the surveys. The results show that the Rio Grande silvery minnow and the fish community utilized the constructed and natural floodplains during the spring spawning season. Freight deliveries on signalized urban streets are known to cause lane blockages during delivery. Traffic congestion associated with urban freight deliveries has gained increasing attention recently as traffic engineers and planners are tasked with finding solutions to manage increasing demand more sustainably with limited road capacity. The goal of this research is to evaluate two models for quantifying the capacity and delay effects of a lane blocking freight delivery on a signalized urban street. The two methods are: an all-or-nothing model similar to methodology used in the Highway Capacity Manual 2010 (HCM2010) and a detailed analytical model consistent with kinematic wave theory. The purpose is to provide insight on the use of these tools for analysis of urban freight delivery policy. The results of the two models are compared with each. A simulation of 8th Avenue in New York has been calibrated to observed freight deliveries from a six-hour period, and the simulated results confirm effect of delivery location on capacity and delay. The results show that the methods from the HCM2010 to account for the effects of buses stopping for passengers provide only a coarse representation of the capacity and delay effects of urban freight deliveries. The more detailed approach that accounts for the dynamics of queuing provide closed form analytical formulas for delay and capacity that can account for varying locations of deliveries, long delivery durations, and different impacts on different lane groups.

Vehicle emissions are a major contributor of air pollution in urban areas, with severe consequences for public health and the environment. This paper focuses on analyzing vehicle emissions in a multimodal urban context to better understand its determinants and investigate relations between emissions and congestion patterns. Thousands of naturalistic trajectories collected with a swarm of drones during the pNEUMA experiment are analyzed and EPA’s microscopic emission model, project level MOVES, is implemented to estimate vehicular emissions. The method is developed and illustrated with a CO2 analysis. The results empirically show the aggregated relationships between congestion and vehicular emissions, while accounting for the individual characteristics of each trajectory. These systematic relationships on a network scale with the use of empirical data, allow us to extend the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) to the emissions-MFD (e-MFD). The spatiotemporal distribution of emissions is also studied, highlighting areas with high concentration over the urban area.
