It has been proven that in standard Einstein gravity, exotic matter (i.e., matter violating the pointwise and averaged Weak and Null Energy Conditions) is required to stabilize traversable wormholes. Quantum field theory permits these violations due to the quantum coherent effects found in any quantum field. Even reasonable classical scalar fields violate the energy conditions. In the case of the Casimir effect and squeezed vacuum states, these violations have been experimentally proven. It is advantageous to investigate methods to minimize the use of exotic matter. One such area of interest is extended theories of Einstein gravity. It has been claimed that in some extended theories, stable traversable wormholes solutions can be found without the use of exotic matter. There are many extended theories of gravity, and in this review paper, we first explore f(R) theories and then explore some wormhole solutions in f(R) theories, including Lovelock gravity and Einstein Dilaton Gauss–Bonnet (EdGB) gravity. For completeness, we have also reviewed ‘Other wormholes’ such as Casimir wormholes, dark matter halo wormholes, thin-shell wormholes, and Nonlocal Gravity (NLG) wormholes, where alternative techniques are used to either avoid or reduce the amount of exotic matter that is required.

BackgroundPatients with leukemia relapse after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) have poor survival due to toxicity and disease progression. A second HCT often offers the only curative treatment.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed our bi-institutional experience (MSKCC-USA; Utrecht-NL) with unrelated cord blood transplantation (CBT) for treatment of post-transplant relapse. Overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) were evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method, treatment-related mortality (TRM) and relapse were evaluated using the competing risk method by Fine-Gray.ResultsTwenty-six patients age < 21 years received a second (n=24) or third (n=2) HCT with CB grafts during the period 2009-2021. Median age at first HCT (HCT1) was 11.5 (range: 0.9-17.7) years and all patients received myeloablative cytoreduction. Median time from HCT1 to relapse was 12.8 (range 5.5-189) months. At CBT, median patient age was 13.5 (range 1.4-19.1) years. Diagnoses were AML: 13; ALL: 4, MDS: 5, JMML: 2; CML: 1; mixed phenotype acute leukemia: 1. Sixteen patients (62%) were in advanced stage, either CR>2 or with active disease. Median time from HCT1 to CBT was 22.2 (range 7-63.2) months. All patients engrafted after CBT. Thirteen patients developed acute GvHD; 7 had grade III or IV. With a median survivor follow-up of 46.6 (range 17.4-155) months, 3-year OS was 69.2% (95% CI 53.6-89.5%) and 3-year EFS was 64.9% (95% CI 48.8-86.4%). Eight patients died, 3 of AML relapse and 5 due to toxicity (respiratory failure [n=4], GvHD [n=1]) at a median time of 7.7 (range 5.9-14.4) months after CBT. Cumulative incidence of TRM at 3 years was 19.2% (95% CI 4.1-34.4%). Notably, all TRM events occurred in patients transplanted up to 2015; no toxicity-related deaths were seen in the 16 patients who received CBT after 2015. Cumulative incidence of relapse was 15.9% (95% CI 1.6-30.2%) at 3 years, remarkably low for these very high-risk patients.ConclusionsSurvival was very encouraging following CB transplants in pediatric patients with recurrent leukemia after first HCT, and TRM has been low over the last decade. CBT needs to be strongly considered as a relatively safe salvage therapy option for post-transplant relapse.

Challenges and issues related to the use of pentobarbital euthanasia and disposal of animal remains within the US have recently been reviewed. Environmental and public health challenges increasingly necessitate consideration of alternative methods such as gunshots, an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) “acceptable with conditions” method, for the humane euthanasia of horses. A recent study reported a correctly aimed gunshot provides a humane option for euthanizing horses. However, although aiming guidelines exist, studies examining bullet trajectories in animals euthanized by gunshot have reported that inadequate disruption of the brain is a serious welfare issue. Here, we report the development and production of a portable, reusable, equine gunshot euthanasia training model. Using 3D printing, an anatomically accurate model of an equine head has been developed, with external aiming landmarks and equipped with integrated laser sensors and LED eyes. The laser sensors are embedded in two specific anatomical tracts (pons and medulla) with aiming paths associated with the aiming landmarks to train correct aiming angle. The LED eyes are linked to the laser sensors to provide instant feedback on aiming accuracy. When a beam from a commercially available blue training gun laser travels along the correct aiming path and strikes the sensor inside the head, the lights in the model’s eyes go out and there is an audible signal, providing immediate feedback on the accuracy of the shot. The model facilitates the training of veterinary personnel and first responders in successful gunshot euthanasia, providing instantaneous feedback on the likelihood of a shot causing immediate, humane death in a live animal.

The competitive dynamics of mitochondrial haplotypes juxtaposed within the same cell are poorly studied. Here the authors show, in the context of a transmissible cancer, that one haplotype has recurrently entered cancer cells by horizontal transfer and appears to have a ‘selfish’ selective advantage.

Abstract To discover driver fusions beyond canonical exon-to-exon chimeric transcripts, we develop CICERO, a local assembly-based algorithm that integrates RNA-seq read support with extensive annotation for candidate ranking. CICERO outperforms commonly used methods, achieving a 95% detection rate for 184 independently validated driver fusions including internal tandem duplications and other non-canonical events in 170 pediatric cancer transcriptomes. Re-analysis of TCGA glioblastoma RNA-seq unveils previously unreported kinase fusions (KLHL7-BRAF) and a 13% prevalence of EGFR C-terminal truncation. Accessible via standard or cloud-based implementation, CICERO enhances driver fusion detection for research and precision oncology. Feral donkey removal from state land has raised concerns in terms of disease transmission between equine species. Disease outbreaks may occur as a result of the relocation of animals to new environments. Virus and bacteria DNA load and serum amyloid A derived from the pathogenic processes that they involve were measured in recently captured donkeys. Blood and nasal swabs were collected from 85 donkeys (Death Valley National Park, Shoshone, California); 24 were retested after 30/60 days in the Scenic (Arizona) long-term holding facility co-mingled with feral donkeys from Arizona and Utah. Quantitative Real-Time PCR (qPCR) was performed to detect viral and bacterial genomic material (equine influenza A [EIV], equine rhinitis A and B viruses, AHV-2, AHV-3, AHV-5 and EHV-1, EHV-4, Streptococcus equi subspecies equi and zooepidemicus,). Significant relations between behavior, body condition score, nasal discharge, and coughing were found in donkeys for which AHV-2 and Streptococcus zooepidemicus DNA was detected. Higher SAA concentrations were found in foals. AHV-2 and Streptococcus zooepidemicus DNA concentrations significantly differed between sampling moments (p < 0.05). In conclusion, donkeys do not appear to be a substantial risk for disease transmission to horses but could be if they carried strangles or other processes in which AHV-2 and Streptococcus zooepidemicus were involved.

The curvature invariants of three Lorentzian wormholes are calculated and plotted in this paper. The plots may be inspected for discontinuities to analyze the traversability of a wormhole. This approach was formulated by Henry, Overduin, and Wilcomb for black holes (Henry et al., 2016). Curvature invariants are independent of coordinate basis, so the process is free of coordinate mapping distortions and the same regardless of your chosen coordinates (Christoffel, E.B., 1869; Stephani, et al., 2003). The four independent Carminati and McLenaghan (CM) invariants are calculated and the nonzero curvature invariant functions are plotted (Carminati et al., 1991; Santosuosso et al., 1998). Three traversable wormhole line elements analyzed include the (i) spherically symmetric Morris and Thorne, (ii) thin-shell Schwarzschild wormholes, and (iii) the exponential metric (Visser, M., 1995; Boonserm et al., 2018).

Vegetation is often used to control erosion on right-of-way construction sites, but disturbed conditions provide challenges. This research evaluated the impact of common techniques for preparing seedbeds. The study assessed the use of topsoil, and the use of a hydraulic erosion-control product was compared to straw. Experimental seed mixtures were evaluated to understand how native and non-native seeds performed. The intent was to identify critical practices to use in general seeding and mulching specifications. A plot study was conducted comparing vegetation established during one growing season. Treatments included combinations of seed mixture, topsoil treatment, and mulch types. Three seed mixtures were considered: (1) currently used mixture, (2) a warm-season experimental mixture, and (3) a cool-season experimental mixture. Plots with topsoil and no topsoil were compared, and both straw and hydraulic erosion control products were considered. Ground cover, compaction, and biomass were evaluated. Results suggest that alternative seed mixtures that include native and low-threat-level species can provide adequate cover to meet permitting requirements in the first growing season. The warm-season seed mixture provided less cover than the other two mixtures after eight days, but no differences were determined in ground cover among the three seed mixtures at the end of the growing season. Initial germination was improved with hydraulic mulch, but long-term cover was equivalent between hydraulic and straw mulch. Topsoil application would not be recommended if the soil contains undesirable species, and the use of organic amendment products may be more desirable than topsoil alone; however, specifications need to allow the use of these products.

Comprehensive reports of the caseload of donkeys and mules in veterinary hospitals in the United States are lacking. We compiled the information of the caseload of donkeys and mules at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at the University of California, Davis for a ten-year period, from 2008 to 2017. The overall equid caseload was 94,147, of which 996 (1.06%) were donkeys and mules. Most of the neonates seen were mules. Most miniature donkeys were between 2 and 10 years of age, and standard donkeys and mules were 10 to 20 years old. The body condition scores were predominantly high, especially in donkeys. Most miniature and standard donkeys resided in sanctuary and rescue farms and their use was not stated. Most mules were used for riding, packing or driving. Medical complaints represented 62% of the total visits and wellness visits represented 38% of total visits. The donkeys and mules in the case population described here received a good standard of veterinary care with regular vaccinations, deworming, routine dental care, and treatment of ailments. Our study is the first report of the life expectancy, use, body condition, preventative health and veterinary medical care of a population of donkeys and mules in the western United States.

Clones with secreted cellulolytic activity were identified when a cDNA library constructed from poly A(+) RNA of preparasitic second-stage juveniles of Heterodera glycines, the soybean cyst nematode, was expressed in the Escherichia coli SOLR strain and overlaid with a carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) substrate. Twenty CMC-degrading clones were analyzed, and all were either identical or strongly similar to a β-1,4-endoglucanase gene (HG-eng-2), previously isolated from H. glycines. A subgroup of identical “HG-eng-2-like” clones had considerable differences in the 5′ untranslated region compared with HG-eng-2 and were designated HG-eng-3. One H. glycines genomic clone contained HG-eng-2 and HG-eng-3 full-length genes, separated by a distance of approximately 8 kb, and a second genomic clone contained two copies of HG-eng-2, separated by approximately 6.5 kb, suggesting the presence of endoglucanase gene clusters in H. glycines. The HG-eng-2 and HG-eng-3 genes were in opposite transcriptional orientation, with considerable nucleotide differences in their 5′ flanking regions. The highly conserved nucleotide sequence in the introns and exons and their close proximity within the genome suggest that HG-eng-2 and HG-eng-3 are the products of recent gene duplication and inversion.

Polyclonal sera specific to β-1,4-endoglucanases (cellulases) synthesized in the subventral esophageal gland cells of the soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines, were used to provide the first identification of a nematode esophageal gland protein that is secreted into host plant tissue. Sera generated to proteins encoded by Hg-eng-1 and Hg-eng-2 (endoglucanases) did not cross-react with soybean root proteins on Western blots (immunoblots) or in immunofluorescence microscopy of noninoculated (control) soybean root sections. In cross sections of soybean roots at 24 h after inoculation of roots with second-stage juveniles of H. glycines, HG-ENG-1 was localized within the nematode's subventral gland cells and was not detected in root tissue. HG-ENG-2 was localized within the subventral gland cells and was secreted from the juvenile's cortical tissue at 24 h after inoculation of roots with second-stage juveniles of H. glycines. HG-ENG-2 was localized along the juvenile's migratory path through the root cortex.

Notch1 is frequently activated promoting T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL). Here, the authors show that Notch1 induces oxidative phosphorylation dependency in T-ALL and synergism when inhibiting both mitochondrial complex I and glutaminolysis in preclinical murine and human xenograft models.
