The Geostationary Carbon Cycle Observatory (GeoCarb), to be launched in 2023, will be capable of measuring solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and add to the current space-based record which started in 1995. GeoCarb will be unique as it will be the first geostationary satellite capable of sensing SIF over the American continents. Consequently, SIF measurements from GeoCarb can be performed much more flexibly compared to polar-orbiting platforms. With its scan mirror assembly, the instrument can point to any location on the Earth disc. This will allow measurements to be collected at various times of day, and measurement locations can be re-visited several times within a day. In expectation of the launch, we conduct an extensive, SIF-focused simulation study and explore the capability and limitations of the instrument and its particular sampling approach. Using cloud information from real measurements, as well as other observation- and model-based data, we produce over four million atmospheric simulations of GeoCarb measurements that the instrument would see throughout a full day. We then apply dedicated SIF retrieval algorithms on the simulated spectra and investigate the results along with cloud-screening performance and emergent retrieval biases and subsequent bias correction. Finally, we make comparisons with currently operating instruments where appropriate and show future science users of GeoCarb SIF what a typical day of measurements will yield.

Since its selection as a NASA Earth Venture mission in late 2016, the Geostationary Carbon Cycle Observatory (GeoCarb) has been in steady development. Launch is planned for 2024, and the instrument will be hosted on a commercial platform in geostationary orbit. Featuring a geostationary view over the western hemisphere, GeoCarb will be able to provide atmospheric total-column trace gas amounts to help answer scientific questions related to the carbon cycle of North and South America such as the quantification of regional- and urban-scale carbon dioxide emissions.GeoCarb’s instrument design features a two-arm grating-type spectrometer with four separate bands at wavelengths 0.765 µm, 1.606 µm, 2.065 µm and 2.323 µm in order to measure atmospheric absorption features of oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and carbon monoxide (CO). With the spacecraft position being fixed relative to Earth and the instrument’s scan mirror assembly, GeoCarb will be able to selectively point at locations visible from its position over the American continents. As a result, very different sampling strategies can be employed, compared to polar orbiting instruments which are generally limited to revisit periods of days and weeks. For routine operations, the North and South American land masses will be scanned at least once per day – depending on the final choice of scanning strategy, large portions of the American continents could be measured twice per day. Thanks to the flexible scanning capability, there is also the possibility for special campaigns which can feature many repeated measurements over targets of special interest throughout a single day.In this presentation, we summarize the most recent development status of the GeoCarb instrument and the various retrieval algorithms that will be used for data product generation. We will share updates on the impact of sub-slit scene inhomogeneity on retrieval results, and how a slit homogenizer can mitigate those effects. Further, we report on our analyses regarding the correction of the so-called keystone optical aberration. Finally, we provide a detailed overview of GeoCarb’s capabilities for the retrieval of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence.

Data from the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) are presented for the first highly reddened target (Cyg OB2 8A) under the COS Science Team's guaranteed time allocation. Column densities of ionic, atomic, and molecular species are reported and implications are discussed. Data from Cyg OB2 8A demonstrate the ability to analyze highly reddened interstellar sight lines with the COS that were unavailable to previous UV instruments. Measured column densities indicate that the Cyg OB2 8A line of sight contains multiple diffuse clouds rather than a dominant translucent cloud.

Using archival, high-resolution far-ultraviolet HST/STIS spectra of 34 Galactic O and B stars, we measure CI column densities and compare them with measurements from the literature of CO and H_2 with regard to understanding the presence of translucent clouds along the line-of-sight. We find that the CO/H_2 and CO/CI ratios provide good discriminators for the presence of translucent material, and both increase as a function of molecular fraction, f = 2N(H_2)/N(H). We suggest that sightlines with values below CO/H_2 ~ 1E-6 and CO/CI ~ 1 contain mostly diffuse molecular clouds, while those with values above sample clouds in the transition region between diffuse and dark. These discriminating values are also consistent with the change in slope of the CO v. H_2 correlation near the column density at which CO shielding becomes important, as evidenced by the change in photochemistry regime studied by Sheffer et al. (2008). We report the discovery of optical ghosts generated when using Volume Phase Holographic (VPH) gratings in spectrographs employing the Littrow configuration. The ghost is caused by light reflected off the detector surface, recollimated by the camera, recombined by, and reflected from, the grating and reimaged by the camera onto the detector. This recombination can occur in two different ways. We observe this ghost in two spectrographs being developed by the University of Wisconsin - Madison: the Robert Stobie Spectrograph for the Southern African Large Telescope and the Bench Spectrograph for the WIYN 3.5m telescope. The typical ratio of the brightness of the ghost relative to the integrated flux of the spectrum is of order 10^-4, implying a recombination efficiency of the VPH gratings of order 10^-3 or higher, consistent with the output of rigorous coupled wave analysis. Any spectrograph employing VPH gratings, including grisms, in Littrow configuration will suffer from this ghost, though the general effect is not intrinsic to VPH gratings themselves and has been observed in systems with conventional gratings in non-Littrow configurations. We explain the geometric configurations that can result in the ghost as well as a more general prescription for predicting its position and brightness on the detector. We make recommendations for mitigating the ghost effects for spectrographs and gratings currently built. We further suggest design modifications for future VPH gratings to eliminate the problem entirely, including tilted fringes and/or prismatic substrates. High resolution spectroscopy with FUSE and STIS of atomic and molecular velocity stratification in the nebular outflow of M27 challenge models for the abundance kinematics in planetary nebulae. The simple picture of a very high speed (~ 1000 km/s), high ionization, radiation driven stellar wind surrounded by a slower (~ 10 km/s) mostly molecular outflow, with low ionization and neutral atomic species residing at the wind interaction interface, is not supported... We find ...there is a fast (33 -- 65 km/s) low ionization zone, surrounding a slower ( H_2^+ + e -> H(1s) + H (nl)), which ultimately produces fluorescence of Ha and Lya. In the optically thin limit at the inferred radius of the velocity transition we find dissociation of H_2 by stellar Lyc photons is an order of magnitude more efficient than spontaneous dissociation by far-UV photons. Observations of comet C/2001 A2 (LINEAR) were made with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer beginning 2001 July 12.58 and coinciding with a photometric increase of ~1.5 mag. Spectra were obtained in the 905-1180 A range at 0.25 A spectral resolution using the 30'' × 30'' aperture. Several new cometary emissions were identified, particularly the (0, 0) bands of the CO Hopfield-Birge systems C-X and B-X at 1088 and 1151 A, respectively, O I (1D-1D) at 1152 A, and three lines of the H2 Lyman system at 1071.6, 1118.6, and 1166.8 A, pumped by solar Lyβ fluorescence. Also detected were O I multiplets at 989, 1027, and 1040 A and several lines of the H I Lyman series. The rotational envelopes of the CO bands are resolved and appear to consist of both "cold" and "hot" components, the cold component accounting for 70% of the flux and with a rotational temperature of 55 ± 5 K. The hot component may be indicative of a CO2 source. The CO bands, H2 lines, and O I λ1152 all decreased by a factor of 2 over the 7.5 hr observation. The derived time-averaged production rates are Q(CO) = 1.3 × 1027 molecules s-1 and Q(H2O) = 2.1 × 1029 molecules s-1. These values may be uncertain by as much as a factor of 2 because of uncertainties in the solar flux and the electron impact contribution to the excitation.

Far-ultraviolet spectra of Venus and Mars in the range 820-1840 A at 4 A resolution were obtained on 13 and 12 March 1995, respectively, by the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT), which was part of the Astro-2 observatory on the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Longward of 1250 A, the spectra of both planets are dominated by emission of the CO Fourth Positive band system and strong OI and CI multiplets. In addition, CO Hopfield-Birge bands, B - X (0,0) at 1151 A and C - X (0,0) at 1088 A, are detected for the first time, and there is a weak indication of the E - X (0,0) band at 1076 A in the spectrum of Venus. The B - X band is blended with emission from OI 1152. Modeling the relative intensities of these bands suggests that resonance fluorescence of CO is the dominant source of the emission, as it is for the Fourth Positive system. Shortward of Lyman-alpha, other emission features detected include OII 834, OI lambda 989, HI Lyman-beta, and NI 1134 and 1200. For Venus, the derived disk brightnesses of the OI, OII, and HI features are about one-half of those reported by Hord et al. (1991) from Galileo EUV measurements made in February 1990. This result is consistent with the expected variation from solar maximum to solar minimum. The ArI 1048, 1066 doublet is detected only in the spectrum of Mars and the derived mixing ratio of Ar is of the order of 2%, consistent with previous determinations., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ, July 20, 2000

A sounding rocket observation of comet Hale-Bopp was conducted on 1997 April 6 at 3:51 UT when the comet was at heliocentric and geocentric distances of 0.92 and 1.39 AU, respectively. The instrument was a telescope and long-slit (65 × 260''), ultraviolet (1280-1880 A) spectrograph that sampled the coma parallel to the Sun-comet line from ~105 km sunward of the nucleus to ~2 × 105 km tailward with ~6'' (6000 km) spatial resolution. Two spectral images were obtained with the slit offset 20'' and 40'' from the nucleus in the direction perpendicular to the long axis of the slit. Spatial profiles and production rates for C, O, CO, and S are presented. Modeling of the spatial profiles of CO and C emissions indicate that photodissociation of the detected CO can account for all of the C I emissions observed. The brightnesses of the strong bands of the CO Fourth Positive system and the S I λ1814 multiplet along near-nuclear lines of sight were diminished by self-absorption. A CO production rate of ~3 × 1030 molecules s-1 is derived.

The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) has recently concluded a set of engineering flights for Observatory performance evaluation. These in-flight opportunities are viewed as a first comprehensive assessment of the Observatory's performance and are used to guide future development activities, as well as to identify additional Observatory upgrades. Pointing stability was evaluated, including the image motion due to rigid-body and flexible-body telescope modes as well as possible aero-optical image motion. We report on recent improvements in pointing stability by using an active mass damper system installed on the telescope. Measurements and characterization of the shear layer and cavity seeing, as well as image quality evaluation as a function of wavelength have also been performed. Additional tests targeted basic Observatory capabilities and requirements, including pointing accuracy, chopper evaluation and imager sensitivity. We present the flight performance and preliminary science results from the first flight of the Sub-orbital Local Interstellar Cloud Experiment (SLICE). SLICE is a rocket-borne far-ultraviolet instrument designed to study the diffuse interstellar medium. The SLICE payload comprises a Cassegrain telescope with LiF-coated aluminum optics feeding a Rowland Circle spectrograph operating at medium resolution (R ~ 5000) over the 102 – 107 nm bandpass. We present a novel method for cleaning LiF-overcoated Al optics and the instrumental wavelength calibration, while the details of the instrument design and assembly are presented in a companion proceeding (Kane et al. 2013). We focus primarily on first results from the spring 2013 launch of SLICE in this work. SLICE was launched aboard a Terrier-Black Brant IX sounding rocket from White Sands Missile Range to observe four hot stars sampling different interstellar sightlines. The instrument acquired approximately 240 seconds of on-target time for the science spectra. We observe atomic and molecular transitions (HI, OI, CII, OVI, H2) tracing a range of temperatures, ionization states, and molecular fractions in diffuse interstellar clouds. Initial spectral synthesis results and future plans are discussed.

We present a conceptual design for a high-resolution optical spectrograph appropriate for mounting at Cassegrain on a large aperture telescope. The design is based on our work for the Gemini High Resolution Optical Spectrograph (CUGHOS) project. Our design places the spectrograph at Cassegrain focus to maximize throughput and blue wavelength coverage, delivering R=40,000 resolving power over a continuous 320–1050 nm waveband with throughputs twice those of current instruments. The optical design uses a two-arm, cross-dispersed echelle format with each arm optimized to maximize efficiency. A fixed image slicer is used to minimize optics sizes. The principal challenge for the instrument design is to minimize flexure and degradation of the optical image. To ensure image stability, our opto-mechanical design combines a cost-effective, passively stable bench employing a honeycomb aluminum structure with active flexure control. The active flexure compensation consists of hexapod mounts for each focal plane with full 6-axis range of motion capability to correct for focus and beam displacement. We verified instrument performance using an integrated model that couples the optical and mechanical design to image performance. Simultaneous imaging and spectroscopic observations of Jupiter's far-ultraviolet aurora covering half a jovian rotation were made on 31 May 1994. The Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 images revealed dramatic and rapidly changing auroral features, including discrete longitudinal structures along the auroral ovals, with variable contrast; a poleward offset in a north oval sector, showing equatorward motion near dusk; emissions polewards of the ovals, apparently co-rotating; and a bright event developing near the dawn limb. Viewing geometry effects explain the rotational intensity modulation observed by the International Ultraviolet Explorer, without intrinsic longitudinal asymmetries.

We present the first science results from the Sub-orbital Local Interstellar Cloud Experiment (SLICE): moderate resolution 1020-1070A spectroscopy of four sightlines through the local interstellar medium. High signal-to-noise (S/N) spectra of eta Uma, alpha Vir, delta Sco, and zeta Oph were obtained during a 21 April 2013 rocket flight. The SLICE observations constrain the density, molecular photoexcitation rates, and physical conditions present in the interstellar material towards delta Sco and zeta Oph. Our spectra indicate a factor of two lower total N(H2) than previously reported for delta Sco, which we attribute to higher S/N and better scattered light control in the new SLICE observations. We find N(H2) = 1.5 x 10^{19} cm^{-2} on the delta Sco sightline, with kinetic and excitation temperatures of 67 and 529 K, respectively, and a cloud density of n_{H} = 56 cm^{-3}. Our observations of the bulk of the molecular sightline toward zeta Oph are consistent with previous measurements (N(H2) ~ 3 x 10^{20} cm^{-2} at T_{01} = 66 K and T_{exc} = 350 K). However, we detect significantly more rotationally excited H2 towards zeta Oph than previously observed. We infer a cloud density in the rotationally excited component of n_{H} ~ 7600 cm^{-3} and suggest that the increased column densities of excited H2 are a result of the ongoing interaction between zeta Oph and its environment; also manifest as the prominent mid-IR bowshock observed by WISE and the presence of vibrationally-excited H2 molecules observed by HST., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Carbon monoxide (CO) is the most commonly used tracer of molecular gas in the inner regions of protoplanetary disks. CO can be used to constrain the excitation and structure of the circumstellar environment. Absorption line spectroscopy provides an accurate assessment of a single line-of-sight through the protoplanetary disk system, giving more straightforward estimates of column densities and temperatures than CO and molecular hydrogen emission line studies. We analyze new observations of ultraviolet CO absorption from the Hubble Space Telescope along the sightlines to six classical T Tauri stars. Gas velocities consistent with the stellar velocities, combined with the moderate-to-high disk inclinations, argue against the absorbing CO gas originating in a fast-moving disk wind. We conclude that the far-ultraviolet observations provide a direct measure of the disk atmosphere or possibly a slow disk wind. The CO absorption lines are reproduced by model spectra with column densities in the range N(^{12}CO) ~ 10^{16} - 10^{18} cm^{-2} and N(^{13}CO) ~ 10^{15} - 10^{17} cm^{-2}, rotational temperatures T_{rot}(CO) ~ 300 - 700 K, and Doppler b-values, b ~ 0.5 - 1.5 km s^{-1}. A key astrophysical theme that will drive future UV/optical space missions is the life cycle of cosmic matter, from the flow of intergalactic gas into galaxies to the formation and evolution of exoplanetary systems. Spectroscopic systems capable of delivering high resolution with low backgrounds will be essential to addressing these topics. Towards this end, we are developing a rocket-borne instrument that will serve as a pathfinder for future high-sensitivity, highresolution UV spectrographs. The Colorado High-resolution Echelle Stellar Spectrograph (CHESS) will provide 2 km s-1 velocity resolution (R = 150,000) over the 100 - 160 nm bandpass that includes key atomic and molecular spectral diagnostics for the intergalactic medium (H I Lyman-series, O VI, N V, and C IV), exoplanetary atmospheres (H I Lyman-alpha, O I, and C II), and protoplanetary disks (H2 and CO electronic band systems). CHESS uses a novel mechanical collimator comprised of an array of 10 mm x 10 mm stainless steel tubes to feed a low-scatter, 69 grooves mm-1 echelle grating. The cross-disperser is a holographically ruled toroid, with 351 grooves mm-1. The spectral orders can be recorded with either a 40 mm cross-strip microchannel plate detector or a 3.5k x 3.5k δ-doped CCD. The microchannel plate will deliver 30 μm spatial resolution and employs new 64 amp/axis electronics to accommodate high count rate observations of local OB stars. CHESS is scheduled to be launched aboard a NASA Terrier/Black Brant IX sounding rocket from White Sands Missile Range in the summer of 2013.

The direct study of molecular gas in inner protoplanetary disks is complicated by uncertainties in the spatial distribution of the gas, the time-variability of the source, and the comparison of observations across a wide range of wavelengths. Some of these challenges can be mitigated with far-ultraviolet spectroscopy. Using new observations obtained with the HST-Cosmic Origins Spectrograph, we measure column densities and rovibrational temperatures for CO and H2 observed on the line-of-sight through the AA Tauri circumstellar disk. CO A-X absorption bands are observed against the far-UV continuum. The CO absorption is characterized by log(N(^{12}CO)) = 17.5 +/- 0.5 cm^{-2} and T_rot(CO) = 500$^{+500}_{-200} K, although this rotational temperature may underestimate the local kinetic temperature of the CO-bearing gas. We also detect ^{13}CO in absorption with an isotopic ratio of ~20. We do not observe H2 absorption against the continuum; however, hot H2 (v > 0) is detected in absorption against the LyA emission line. We measure the column densities in eight individual rovibrational states, determining a total log(N(H2)) = 17.9^{+0.6}_{-0.3} cm^{-2} with a thermal temperature of T(H2) = 2500^{+800}_{-700} K. The high-temperature of the molecules, the relatively small H2 column density, and the high-inclination of the AA Tauri disk suggest that the absorbing gas resides in an inner disk atmosphere. If the H2 and CO are co-spatial within a molecular layer ~ 0.6 AU thick, this region is characterized by ~ 10^{5} cm^{-3} with an observed ratio of ~ 0.4. We also find evidence for a departure from a purely thermal H2 distribution, suggesting that excitation by continuum photons and H2 formation may be altering the level populations in the molecular gas., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) is a moderate-resolution spectrograph with unprecedented sensitivity that was installed into the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in May 2009, during HST Servicing Mission 4 (STS-125). We present the design philosophy and summarize the key characteristics of the instrument that will be of interest to potential observers. For faint targets, with flux F_lambda ~ 1.0E10-14 ergs/s/cm2/Angstrom, COS can achieve comparable signal to noise (when compared to STIS echelle modes) in 1-2% of the observing time. This has led to a significant increase in the total data volume and data quality available to the community. For example, in the first 20 months of science operation (September 2009 - June 2011) the cumulative redshift pathlength of extragalactic sight lines sampled by COS is 9 times that sampled at moderate resolution in 19 previous years of Hubble observations. COS programs have observed 214 distinct lines of sight suitable for study of the intergalactic medium as of June 2011. COS has measured, for the first time with high reliability, broad Lya absorbers and Ne VIII in the intergalactic medium, and observed the HeII reionization epoch along multiple sightlines. COS has detected the first CO emission and absorption in the UV spectra of low-mass circumstellar disks at the epoch of giant planet formation, and detected multiple ionization states of metals in extra-solar planetary atmospheres. We have assembled and launched the Diffuse Interstella r Cloud Experiment (DICE), an instrument capable of recording high resolution ( / = 30,000) spectra in the Far Ultraviolet (F UV). Absorption measurements toward nearby bright stars can provide new in sight into the processes governing warm-hot gas in the Local Interstella r Medium. It flew on May 21 st , 2010. An anomaly in the Black Brant motor subjected the payload to abnormally high vibration. As a result, the optics were misaligned and no sp ectral data fell on the detector. Here we present the details of mechanical and electrical integration with NASA launch systems, as well as optical alignment of the telescope and spectrograph. The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) was installed into the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) during Servicing Mission 4 (SM4) in May 2009. COS is designed to obtain spectra of faint objects at moderate spectral resolution (R > 16,000) in two channels: FUV, covering wavelengths from 1150 to 1450 A; and NUV, covering 1700 - 3200 A. Two low resolution gratings (R > 1500) cover the < 900 - 2050 A (FUV) and 1650 - 3200 A (NUV) wavelength regions. An imaging capability is also available on the NUV channel. As part of the Hubble Servicing Mission Observatory Verification (SMOV) program, an extensive period of checkout, fine-tuning and preliminary characterization began after the installation of COS. The COS SMOV program was a cooperative effort between the Space Telescope Science Institute and the Instrument Definition Team based at the University of Colorado. Nearly 2800 COS exposures in 34 separate observing programs were obtained during the course of SMOV. Early activities included an initial instrument functional checkout, turn-on and initial characterization of the detectors, NUV and FUV channel focus and alignment, and target acquisition verification and assessment. Once this initial period was completed, science-related calibrations and verifications were performed in order to prepare the instrument for normal science operations. These activities included wavelength calibration, flux calibration, detector flat field characterization, spectroscopic performance verification, high S/N operation, and thermal and structural stability measurements. We discuss the design, execution and results of the SMOV program, including the interrelationships between the various tasks, and how the pre-launch plan was adjusted in real-time due to changing conditions.

We present a brief review of molecules studied with far‐ultraviolet spectroscopy, discussing absorption line measurements of the dominant interstellar molecules (H2 and CO) and H2 emission from molecular clouds near hot stars. We give two examples where the CO/H2 ratio, which can only be derived uniquely in the far‐ultraviolet, can be used to study the structure of the interstellar medium. Prospects are discussed for future work with deeper observations that would allow one to probe farther into molecular clouds in the galaxy. We describe a mini‐survey of five local photodissociation regions (PDRs) carried out with FUSE. We use these data to characterize the far‐UV spectra of PDRs for the first time and to refine models of the H2 fluorescent emission process. We find that our models can adequately reproduce the observed emission spectra of three of these regions (IC 63, M42, and IC 405). The remaining two (NGC 2023 and NGC 7023) do not show clear emission from H2 in the FUSE band, despite the well defined...

The ultraviolet groove efficiency for a holographically ruled diffraction grating with a trapezoidal profile has been measured. The efficiencies for the +/-1 and the zero orders are in good agreement with those derived from scalar theory. The +/-1 orders have equal efficiency as a function of wavelength. The peak of the sum of fitted groove efficiency functions is 76%, a level that is competitive with the groove efficiency of a mechanically blazed grating. We suggest that a normal-incidence grating mount with detectors at both orders will offer a system with twice the efficiency and provide a built-in redundancy. We discuss design considerations for reducing astigmatism equally in both orders in such dual-order mountings.

We have used archival far-ultraviolet spectra from observations made by HST/STIS and FUSE to determine the column densities and rotational excitation temperatures for CO and H2, respectively, along the lines of sight to 23 Galactic O and B stars. The sightlines have reddening values in the range E(B-V)= 0.07-0.62, sampling the diffuse to translucent interstellar medium. We find that the H2 column densities range from 5x10^18-8x10^20 cm^-2 and the CO from upper limits around 2x10^12 cm^-2 to detections as high as 1.4x10^16 cm^-2. CO increases with increasing H2, roughly following a power law of factor \~2. The CO/H2 column density ratio is thus not constant, and ranges from 10^-7 - 10^-5, with a mean value of 3x10^-6. The reflection nebula NGC 2023 was observed by a rocket-borne long-slit imaging spectrograph in the 900 -- 1400 Angstrom bandpass on 2000 February 11. A spectrum of the star, as well as that of the nebular scattered light, was recorded. Through the use of a Monte Carlo modeling process, the scattering properties of the dust were derived. The albedo is low, 0.2 -- 0.4, and decreasing toward shorter wavelengths, while the phase function asymmetry parameter is consistent with highly forward-scattering grains, g~0.85. The decrease in albedo, while the optical depth increases to shorter wavelengths, implies that the far-UV rise in the extinction curve is due to an increase in absorption efficiency., 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We describe a vacuum collimator that we have assembled to characterize the windowless ultraviolet properties of a sounding rocket spectrographic telescope. The collimator comprises a Cassegrain telescope, with SiC coated optics, used in the pre-flight calibration phase of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, and vacuum skins provided by NASA/Wallops. The collimator focal plane has a three-axis motorized stage, which we have used for the precision placement of a knife edge focal locator along with pinhole and flat-field sources. We describe the focusing procedure and present the results of a number of experiments whereby the collimator, telescope and spectrograph point spread functions were determined and a spectro-spatial flat-field of the detector was acquired.© (2001) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. We present the design of a pinhole lamp recently flown aboard two NASA/JHU sounding rocket missions as a wavelength standard for a far-UV spectrograph with a 900 - 1400 Angstrom bandpass. Lamp configuration, spectral output, gas supplies, payload accommodation and operation procedures are discussed. This lamp could easily be incorporated into future far-UV spectroscopic orbital missions and would benefit science return. We also discuss the use of Bayard-Alpert tubes (ionization gauges) as far-UV sources, which have the advantage of not requiring an external gas supply. At pressures between 10-5 and 10-7 Torr these tubes produce a strong emission line spectra, caused by electron impact with residual gas atoms in the vacuum. Below 10-7 Torr the residual gas line intensities have weaken enough to reveal the long wavelength tail of a 150 eV bremsstrahlung spectrum produced by electron impact onto tungsten grid. The use of ionization gauges in flat field and end-to-end calibration experiments is described. We show how an ionization gauge and spectrograph can be used as a real- time residual gas analyzer sensitive to atomic and molecular gas species that emit within the bandpass. A sample of 59 sight lines to reddened Galactic OB stars was examined for correlations of the strength of the CO Fourth Positive (A - X) absorption band system with the ultraviolet interstellar extinction curve parameters. We used archival high-dispersion NEWSIPS IUE spectra to measure the CO absorption for comparison to parametric fits of the extinction curves from the literature. A strong correlation with the non-linear far-UV curvature term was found with greater absorption, normalized to E(B-V), being associated with more curvature. A weaker trend with the linear extinction term was also found. As part of a program to study translucent interstellar clouds, NGC 2024 IRS 1 was observed by the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope. IRS 1 is a heavily reddened B0.5 V star (E(B – V) = 1.69, RV = 4.5, and AV = 7.61) lying outside the core of the NGC 2024 cluster and not considered to be the ionizing source of the nebula. At wavelengths below about 1300 A, the observed spectrum deviates from that expected of a reddened B star, showing an increase in flux to shorter wavelengths and the presence of P-Cygni profiles in both the C III] λ1176 and N V λ1240 lines. Because of the presence of these lines, the absence of any P-Cygni signature in the Si IV λ1394/1403 lines, and the measurement of extended emission on the detector focal plane, we believe this portion of the spectrum to be scattered light from an O6 to B0 supergiant. The COS entrance aperture is 2.5 arcsec in diameter and can let in substantial scattered light from the nebula. NGC 2024 IRS 2b is an O8 star and believed to be the ionizing source of the nebula. It is currently identified as a main-sequence star, but should it be a supergiant the presence of such an evolved star implies an age for the cluster of the order of 3 Myr, in conflict with age determinations based on infrared spectroscopy, and may have implications for the energetics and density structure of the nebula.

We have designed, assembled, and launched a sounding rocket payload to perform high-resolution far-ultraviolet spectroscopy. The instrument is functionally a Cassegrain telescope followed by a modified Rowland spectrograph. The spectrograph was designed to achieve a resolving power (R=λ/δλ) of 60,000 in a compact package by adding a magnifying secondary optic. This is enabled by using a holographically ruled grating to minimize aberrations induced by the second optic. We designed the instrument to observe two stars on opposing sides of a nearby hot/cold gas interface. Obtaining spectra of the O VI doublet in absorption toward these stars can provide new insight into the processes governing hot gas in the local interstellar medium. Here we present the optical design and alignment of the telescope and spectrograph, as well as flight results.

Carbon monoxide is a commonly used IR/submillimeter tracer of gas in protoplanetary disks. We present an analysis of ultraviolet CO emission in Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph spectra for 12 Classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs). Several ro-vibrational bands of the CO A 1Π–X 1Σ+ (Fourth Positive) electronic transition system are spectrally resolved from emission of other atoms and H2. The CO A 1Π v′ = 14 state is populated by absorption of Lyα photons, created at the accretion column on the stellar surface. For targets with strong CO emission, we model the Lyα radiation field as an input for a simple fluorescence model to estimate CO rotational excitation temperatures and column densities. Typical column densities range from N CO = 1018 to 1019 cm−2. Our measured excitation temperatures are mostly below T CO = 600 K, cooler than typical M-band CO emission. These temperatures and the emission line widths imply that the UV emission originates in a different population of CO than that which is IR-emitting. We also find a significant correlation between CO emission and the disk accretion rate and age. Our analysis shows that ultraviolet CO emission can be a useful diagnostic of CTTS disk gas.

We exploit the high sensitivity and moderate spectral resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origins Spectrograph to detect far-ultraviolet (UV) spectral features of carbon monoxide (CO) present in the inner regions of protoplanetary disks for the first time. We present spectra of the classical T Tauri stars HN Tau, RECX-11, and V4046 Sgr, representative of a range of CO radiative processes. HN Tau shows CO bands in absorption against the accretion continuum. The CO absorption most likely arises in warm inner disk gas. We measure a CO column density and rotational excitation temperature of N(CO) = (2 ± 1) × 1017 cm−2 and T rot(CO) 500 ± 200 K for the absorbing gas. We also detect CO A–X band emission in RECX-11 and V4046 Sgr, excited by UV line photons, predominantly H i Lyα. All three objects show emission from CO bands at λ > 1560 Å, which may be excited by a combination of UV photons and collisions with non-thermal electrons. In previous observations these emission processes were not accounted for due to blending with emission from the accretion shock, collisionally excited H2, and photo-excited H2, all of which appeared as a “continuum” whose components could not be separated. The CO emission spectrum is strongly dependent upon the shape of the incident stellar Lyα emission profile. We find CO parameters in the range: N(CO) ∼ 1018–1019 cm−2, T rot(CO) ≳ 300 K for the Lyα-pumped emission. We combine these results with recent work on photo-excited and collisionally excited H2 emission, concluding that the observations of UV-emitting CO and H2 are consistent with a common spatial origin. We suggest that the CO/H2 ratio (≡ N(CO)/N(H2)) in the inner disk is ∼1, a transition between the much lower interstellar value and the higher value observed in solar system comets today, a result that will require future observational and theoretical study to confirm.
