Objective: We aimed to determine the impact of COVID-19 on the psychosocial functioning of adolescents with inborn errors of immunity (IEI). Material and Methods: Thirty-six patients with IEI (18 mild, 18 severe) and 18 healthy controls aged between 10 and 17 were included in this study. Adolescents and their caregivers completed the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS) to measure symptoms of anxiety and depression and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) to assess prosocial behaviors and emotional/behavioral problems. Additionally, the COVID-19 Phobia Scale (C19P-S) was answered by adolescents to assess the level of coronavirus phobia. Results: According to SDQ, emotional scores of the adolescents in the control group are higher than the mild/severe patient group. Emotional scores of the severe patient group are higher than the mild group. The RCADS parent- and adolescent-reported depression scores and parent-reported social phobia scores of the control group were significantly higher than the mild group. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups according to COVID-19 Phobia Scale. Conclusion: The healthy adolescents had higher psychiatric symptom scores, especially than the adolescents with mild IEI. We suggest that being exposed to health-related challenges even before the pandemics in adolescents with IEI helped them develop psychological resilience. Longitudinal and larger studies are needed to evaluate the long-term effects of the pandemic on the mental health of this vulnerable adolescent population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to develop a scale for evaluating disordered eating attitudes and behaviors among adolescents aged 14 to 18. The scale’s factor structure was examined with a total of 1379 participants, revealing 14 items and three sub-dimensions that accounted for 58.46% of the total variance. The scale demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = .86) and test-retest reliability (r = .90). Regarding criterion validity, the correlation between the Disordered Eating Scale (DES) and the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) was found to be .86. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis results indicated a sensitivity of .930 and a specificity of .91 for the ≥31 cut-off point. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted, and the model fit indexes for both applications were as follows: x 2 = 287.43, df = 73, x 2/df = 3.94, RMSEA = 0.079, CFI = 0.938, TLI = 0.922, and SRMR = 0.045. These findings supported the three-dimensional model, suggesting that disordered eating can be measured through restriction, weight anxiety, and extraction-control behaviors dimensions with a total of 14 items. The DES is deemed suitable for screening and evaluating negative eating behaviors and potential psychopathology in adolescents, including those with and without clinical eating disorder symptoms. 19. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adolescents.

- Abstract
Current research on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is generally based on quantitative methodology. This indicates a lack of information on how ADHD individuals explain this phenomenon, and what they experience. The aim of this research is to reveal how attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is experienced in adolescents and how adolescents explain this phenomenon. The participants in this study were ten adolescents aged 11-18 who were diagnosed with ADHD and did not have a comorbid diagnosis. Participants were interviewed through a semi-structured interview form. The interviews were conducted and recorded on an online platform, and a transcript of the voice recording of each participant was then created. The texts obtained from the transcripts were analyzed with an interpretative phenomenological analysis. As a result of the analysis, the following themes were found: Academic difficulty, normalizing and affirming the diagnosis, living with undesirable emotions and behaviors, and negative social experiences. The findings reveal that the ADHD-related experiences of adolescents and their explanations for the ADHD diagnosis are not of a single nature. Instead, they were also perceived in a positive light as well as negative. The results reveal that the awareness of professionals and families who have contact with ADHD-diagnosed adolescents should be raised, and interventional and motivational programs directed at ADHD treatment-related negative experiences of adolescents can be organized. Sleep disorders during adolescence period increase each year and adversely affect the physical and mental health of adolescents. After-school social activities and various work outside the school may cause delays in bedtime. In addition, there can be shifts in the circadian rhythm due to a number of biological changes seen in the transition to adolescence, which can result in a wide range of sleep problems, such as not being able to fall asleep at night, difficulty waking up in the morning, daytime sleepiness, sleep deprivation and deterioration in sleep quality. It is important to know the causes of sleep disorders, possible effects on physical health and mental health, and protective and risk-forming factors seen in adolescent period; to intervene in these disorders and to develop preventive measures. Preventive measures, such as increasing awareness about sleep disorders in adolescents, informing families and adolescents about the issue, and organizing school start-up times for this age group, may contribute significantly to solving this important issue, which has increased year-to-year.

Aim This study aims to determine the reference vascularization index (VI) values for the thyroid gland in healthy children and adolescents using Super microvascular imaging (SMI). It was also investigated the correlation between thyroid vascularity and thyroid lobe volumes, age, sex, weight, height, and body mass index (BMI). Material and Methods One hundred and twenty-four children and adolescents without a thyroid gland, systemic disease, and medical history affecting the thyroid gland were included in the study. Participants with abnormal thyroid function tests were excluded from the study. Age, gender, height, and weight were recorded before ultrasonography and SMI examinations. After the grayscale ultrasonography, VI values for each participant were obtained using SMI. The association between the VI and thyroid lobe volumes, age, sex, weight, height, and BMI values were analyzed. Results Median values of the age, height, weight, and BMI of 124 participants were 10 (6-12) years, 1.3 (1.2-1.52) m, 30.5 (21-47) kg, 17.55 (15.37-21.14) kg/m2, respectively. Median (IQR) values of the left and right thyroid lobe volumes were 1.4 (0.9-2.07) mL and 1.9 (1.2-3.07) mL, respectively, and the mean VI value was 5.31±1.84%. There was no significant association of VI values with the thyroid lobe volume. Also, there was no relation between the mean VI values and the auxological parameters. Conclusion This study defines the VI values of thyroid glands in healthy adolescents and children. It also demonstrated no correlation between VI values of the thyroid gland and thyroid lobe volume, sex, age, weight, height, and BMI.

This qualitative explorative case study investigated career values and occupational aspirations of adolescent girls and boys and those that their parents aspired to for their child's future. 45 high school students (53% girls) and their parents (n=45), from a relatively collectivist city in the Southeast region of Turkey participated to the study. Results showed that girls and their parents noted economic security; boys and their parents mentioned cultural identity, in common. Girls, boys, and their parents, all, attached importance to prestige, achievement, and loyalty to family. It was seen that both girls and boys appreciated leisure time besides work and life style, differently from their parents. In terms of occupational aspirations, while adolescent girls aspired to be English language teacher, doctor, nurse, and architect, mostly, adolescent boys aspired to be military pilot and officer, police officer, and doctor in the future. Girls' parents mentioned doctor, nurse, teacher, and lawyer and boys' parents underlined engineer, lawyer and police officer as their aspirations for their children's future occupations. The results implied the role of parental and contextual influences within a communal culture as well as adolescents' own generational characteristics on career values and occupational aspirations. In order to prevent the spread of the virus during the COVID-19 epidemic period, measures such as maintaining social distance, quarantine practices, and keeping schools closed have been taken in many countries. In this process, individuals' internet use has also increased in order to restore interpersonal relationships that have decreased with staying at home. In addition, the transfer of educational activities, which are risky to be carried out face-to-face during the epidemic period, to online platforms, as in many countries, brought about an increase in the time spent on devices with internet providers in adolescents. For this reason, it is important to evaluate the results of studies examining the concepts of internet and smartphone addiction in relation to the use of the internet in the COVID-19 period. In this context, in this systematic review, "What is the status of adolescents' smartphone and internet addictions in the COVID-19 Era?" The question has been tried to be answered. As a result of the searches made in the databases, fourteen studies were reached and these studies were examined in depth. The findings showed that adolescents' internet/smartphone addictions were higher than before the epidemic, the prevalence of internet/smartphone addictions increased in general, and internet/smartphone addictions were associated with adolescents' mental disorders and problems. Objective: In this study, anxiety levels, emotional and behavioral problems, self-esteem and quality of life (QoL) in adolescents with iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) were investigated. Methods: The sample of this cross-sectional case-control study consisted of 115 adolescents (34 ID, 44 IDA and 37 healthy controls) aged 12-17 years. Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, The Pediatric QoL Inventory, Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Emotional Disorders were used for psychosocial assessment. Results: The anxiety levels of patients with IDA were higher compared with healthy controls. The total, physical and psychosocial QoL scores of the adolescents with IDA was found to be lower than those with ID or healthy controls. The total iron binding capacity was correlated with total and psychosocial QoL, self-esteem, and anxiety scores. Conclusion: Findings suggest that adolescents with IDA are affected in terms of anxiety and QoL. A psychosocial evaluation of adolescents with IDA would be appropriate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ADOLESCENT psychiatry , *CHILD psychiatry , *JUSTICE administration , *TEENAGERS , *MENTAL illness - Abstract
Objectives: Although the frequency of forensic evaluation requested from child and adolescent psychiatry clinics has increased in recent years, studies in this field in our country are very limited. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of children and adolescents whose forensic reports were requested by the justice systems for various reasons. Method: The sample of the study was composed of children and adolescents who were directed by the justice systems between February 2019 and February 2020 to Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University Yıldırım Beyazıt Training and Research Hospital Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Clinics. The information about the reasons for referring the participants to the clinic, their sociodemographic features, and psychiatric diagnoses determined by clinical interview based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 were retrospectively scanned. Results: While the average age of 83 patients who participated in the study was 13.93±2.32 year, 68.7% (n=57) of them were men. Justice systems are most often directed to assess whether the cases are capable of discriminating (%83.1, n=69). It was determined that 68.1% (n=47) of these cases were children driving to committing crime and 31.9% (n=22) were children who were victims of sexual abuse. The total intelligence scores and frequency of school attendance of children driving to committing crime were significantly lower than other forensic cases (p = 0.01, p = 0.04, respectively). In addition, it was found that the frequency of continuing to formal education was significantly higher for children driving to committing crime without recidivism compared to with recidivism (p = 0.01). It was found that the average age of children who were victims of sexual abuse was lower than the average age of other forensic cases (p = 0.01). Conclusion: Our results can contribute to the determination of factors that adversely affect the mental health of children guided by justice systems and to create targeted mental interventions. It also emphasizes that forensic assessment can be an opportunity for many children to meet unmet mental health needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Hematemesis is a common symptom of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, bleeding from the mouth that appears fresh red or looks like "coffee grounds." It is a rare, life-threatening emergency condition and potentially requires emergency intervention in children. Our study aims to evaluate the gastroscopy findings of pediatric patients who presented with vomiting of blood. Methods: Seventy children and adolescents (35 females, 35 males) presented with hematemesis were evaluated retrospectively. Patients' demographic characteristics, gastroscopic findings, pre- and post-operative laboratory results were compared and evaluated. Results: Male patients (6.91±5.21) were significantly younger than female patients (10.51±4.79) at the time of diagnosis (p=0.005). Of these, 92.9% had no symptoms. According to the gastroscopy findings performed at the time of diagnosis, the underlying pathology was detected in 65.7% of cases. Esophagitis was the most common pathology with a rate of 52.2% and followed by pangastritis (30.4%). As a result of posttreatment gastroscopy, 21.7% (n=15) of cases had pathological findings. Moreover, the mean hemoglobin value measured during diagnosis was significantly lower in cases with underlying pathology according to post-treatment gastroscopy results (p=0.025). Conclusion: Hematemesis was observed at an early age in male children with a higher rate of underlying pathology after treatment. In addition, the significantly low hemoglobin levels reported in the cases with positive gastroscopy have reaffirmed the diagnostic and therapeutic importance of gastroscopy. It has also highlighted the requirement for immediately monitoring vital symptoms following the patient's admission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
