Numerous studies have been conducted on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which remains a global health concern. Low-frequency and low-dose ultrasound can help eradicate the virus from the air and the environment. Our research aims to determine how altering ultrasonic waves frequencies and low power affects the virulence and replication rate of a virus.

Since the early 1990s the number of systematic reviews (SR) of animal studies has steadily increased. There is, however, little guidance on when and how to conduct a meta-analysis of human-health-related animal studies. To gain insight about the methods that are currently used we created an overview of the key characteristics of published meta-analyses of animal studies, with a focus on the choice of effect size measures. An additional goal was to learn about the rationale behind the meta-analysis methods used by the review authors. We show that important details of the meta-analyses are not fully described, only a fraction of all human-health-related meta-analyses provided rationales for their decision to use specific effect size measures. In addition, our data may suggest that authors make post-hoc decisions to switch to another effect size measure during the course of their meta-analysis, and possibly search for significant effects. Based on analyses in this paper we recommend that review teams: 1) publish a review protocol before starting the conduct of a SR, prespecifying all methodological details (providing special attention to the planned meta-analysis including the effect size measure and the rational behind choosing a specific effect size, prespecifying subgroups and restricting the number of subgroup analyses), 2) always use the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist to report your SR of animal studies, and 3) use the random effects model (REM) in human-health-related meta-analysis of animal studies, unless the assumptions for using the fixed effect model (FEM) are all met.

Objectives: Double pituitary adenoma is a rare entity that can pose a significant challenge. The incidence of double or multiple pituitary adenomas is ∼1% in autopsy cases and 0.4–1.3% in surgical series. Its definition varies, including 'double adenomas' in the literature in contrast to 'multiple adenomas', which is more specific and suitable. While some authors require separating topographically unique tumours, others have used a looser definition of separate immunohistochemistry. Case presentation: We presented the case of a 26-year-old patient with recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms, with double pituitary adenomas secreting growth hormone (GH) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). To date, 89 patients have been reported in the literature with symptomatic carpal tunnel syndrome, but only five had GH-TSH secretion. Conclusions: Double adenoma resection is of great importance for ensuring successful biochemical treatment. This study focuses on optimizing the physical and mechanical properties of foam materials produced with the addition of sodium alginate as the matrix, and cellulose and activated carbon as fillers. Foam materials, valued for their lightweight and insulation properties, are typically produced from synthetic polymers that pose environmental risks. To mitigate these concerns, this study investigates the potential of natural, biodegradable polymers. Various foam formulations were tested to evaluate their density, compression modulus, and thermal conductivity. The results indicated that an increase in activated carbon content enhanced thermal stability, as indicated by higher Ti% and Tmax% values. Additionally, a higher concentration of sodium alginate and activated carbon resulted in higher foam density and compressive modulus, while cellulose exhibited a more intricate role in the material's behavior. In the optimal formula, where the sum of the component percentages totals 7.6%, the percentages (e.g., 0.5% sodium alginate, 5% cellulose, and 2.1% activated carbon) are calculated based on the weight/volume (w/v) ratio of each component in the water used to prepare the foam mixture. These results indicate that natural and biodegradable polymers can be used to develop high-performance, eco-friendly foam materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/aim: Phthalates are the materials used for plasticizing polyvinyl chloride. Di-(2-Ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is one of the phthalates most frequently used in a wide range of applications, including medical equipment such as endotracheal and feeding tubes, intravenous catheters, central lines, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation sets, total parenteral nutrition bags, blood product sets, and intravenous pump lines, respiratory sets in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Studies have shown that phthalates, including DEHP, can cross the placenta and blood-brain barrier, possibly leading to neurodevelopmental impairment in vitro and in vivo. However, the molecular mechanisms affected by phthalate exposure have not been explored in depth. This study aimed to illuminate the effects of DEHP on neuroinflammation at the molecular level using neonatal microglial cells as the model. Materials and methods: Mouse BV-2 neonatal microglia cells were exposed to DEHP under controlled conditions. Cellular toxicity was assessed via a cell viability assay and specific markers were used to evaluate the apoptosis/necrosis, cellular iron content, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and organelle integrity. Proinflammatory proteins were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, while ferroptosis was assessed using a ferroptosis blocker, and affected gene expressions were determined using quantitative reversetranscriptase real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: The results revealed that high concentrations of DEHP exposure increased toxicity via increased levels of ROS and inflammation. Elevated ROS levels were observed to increase the tendency for mitochondrial-lysosomal disruption, bringing about apoptosis or necrosis. Moreover, iron homeostasis was dysregulated by DEHP, which putatively triggered ferroptosis in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: This study indicates that neonatal exposure to DEHP may be linked to neurodevelopmental impairment via inflammationrelated cell death and ferroptosis. The prevalence of DEHP in NICU medical devices raises concerns about potential neurodevelopmental deficits, including disorders like autism and mental retardation. Free formaldehyde released after particleboard production poses significant risks to human and environmental health. This study investigated the impact of adding activated carbon produced from pine wood waste to particleboard on formaldehyde emissions to lessen this risk. In the first stage of the study, pine wood waste was activated with zinc chloride (ZnCl2) at 600°C for 90 min to produce activated carbon. The activated carbon was examined by scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetric analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. BET surface area of the produced activated carbon was 1102 m2/g. In the second stage of the study, activated carbons (0.5%, 1.0% and 1.5%) were added to a commercially preferred three-layer particleboard to enhance its mechanical, thermal and physical properties. In addition, the effects of the activated carbon on the free formaldehyde emissions of particleboard at 0 and 6 months were investigated. It was found that the free formaldehyde emissions of particleboards with activated carbon addition decreased by 24% at 0 months- and 6 months by 27% compared to the control group. Background Isavuconazole is a relatively new antifungal agent indicated for the management of various invasive fungal diseases (IFDs), including invasive aspergillosis. Information on real-world experience with isavuconazole is scarce. This retrospective observational study aimed to describe the usage of isavuconazole in clinical practice with an in-depth evaluation of individual isavuconazole exposure. Methods Patients treated with isavuconazole were evaluated based on retrospective data, including therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) data and efficacy and safety data. Additionally, we calculated the individual isavuconazole exposure described by the average AUC24 over the first 7 days of treatment by means of non-linear mixed-effects modelling and compared this with the currently desired lower target AUC of 60 mg·h/L. Results Ninety-nine patients treated with isavuconazole were evaluated. In our real-life cohort, isavuconazole was often deployed off-label in patients with non-classical host factors and infections with non- Aspergillus and non-Mucorales species. Isavuconazole was most often chosen for its safety profile, even after prior triazole treatment with manifestations of toxicity. TDM and subsequent dosage adjustments were frequently performed. The individual average AUC24 over 7 days was above 60 mg·h/L in 29 out of 77 (37.7%) patients. Conclusions This overview provides practical insights that can aid clinicians in the management of their patients with IFD. Our study shows that isavuconazole was used in a diverse patient population and was well tolerated overall. Individual isavuconazole exposure reflected by the average AUC24 over the first 7 days of treatment was generally low and variable. Dosage adjustments following TDM were frequently performed. In this study, Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis L.) wood was treated with 0.5%, 1.5% and 4.5% concentrations of two different dimensional stability chemicals (glyoxal and glycerol), two different fire-retardant salts (sodium acetate and sodium pentaborate), and their mixtures (1:1; weight/weight). The thermal degradation properties of wood samples treated with different types and concentrations of compounds were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). When only glyoxal or glycerol was used, they had an adverse effect on the thermal properties of samples. The use of these chemicals together improved the thermal properties, due to the formation of longer polymer chains compared with the control group. Sodium acetate and sodium pentaborate salts, both singly and in a mixture, improved the char yield. The highest char yield (72.13%) was obtained using sodium pentaborate at 4.5% concentration.
