Exciton polaron is a hypothetical many-body quasiparticle that involves an exciton dressed with a polarized electron-hole cloud in the Fermi sea. It has been evoked to explain the excitonic spectra of charged monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, but the studies were limited to the ground state. Here we measure the reflection and photoluminescence of monolayer MoSe2 and WSe2 gating devices encapsulated by boron nitride. We observe gate-tunable exciton polarons associated with the 1 s–3 s exciton Rydberg states. The ground and excited exciton polarons exhibit comparable energy redshift (15~30 meV) from their respective bare excitons. The robust excited states contradict the trion picture because the trions are expected to dissociate in the excited states. When the Fermi sea expands, we observe increasingly severe suppression and steep energy shift from low to high exciton-polaron Rydberg states. Their gate-dependent energy shifts go beyond the trion description but match our exciton-polaron theory. Our experiment and theory demonstrate the exciton-polaron nature of both the ground and excited excitonic states in charged monolayer MoSe2 and WSe2. Interlayer excitons, electron-hole pairs bound across two monolayer van der Waals semiconductors, offer promising electrical tunability and localizability. Because such excitons display weak electron-hole overlap, most studies have examined only the lowest-energy excitons through photoluminescence. We directly measured the dielectric response of interlayer excitons, which we accessed using their static electric dipole moment. We thereby determined an intrinsic radiative lifetime of 0.40 nanoseconds for the lowest direct-gap interlayer exciton in a tungsten diselenide/molybdenum diselenide heterostructure. We found that differences in electric field and twist angle induced trends in exciton transition strengths and energies, which could be related to wave function overlap, moiré confinement, and atomic reconstruction. Through comparison with photoluminescence spectra, this study identifies a momentum-indirect emission mechanism. Characterization of the absorption is key for applications relying on light-matter interactions.

Reconfigurable logic and neuromorphic devices are crucial for the development of high-performance computing. However, creating reconfigurable devices based on conventional complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor technology is challenging due to the limited field-effect characteristics of the fundamental silicon devices. Here we show that a homojunction device made from two-dimensional tungsten diselenide can exhibit diverse field-effect characteristics controlled by polarity combinations of the gate and drain voltage inputs. These electrically tunable devices can achieve reconfigurable multifunctional logic and neuromorphic capabilities. With the same logic circuit, we demonstrate a 2:1 multiplexer, D-latch and 1-bit full adder and subtractor. These functions exhibit a full-swing output voltage and the same supply and signal voltage, which suggests that the devices could be cascaded to create complex circuits. We also show that synaptic circuits based on only three homojunction devices can achieve reconfigurable spiking-timing-dependent plasticity and pulse-tunable synaptic potentiation or depression characteristics; the same function using complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor devices would require more than ten transistors. A homojunction device made from two-dimensional tungsten diselenide can be used to create circuits that exhibit multifunctional logic and neuromorphic capabilities with simpler designs than conventional silicon-based systems.

Moiré superlattices formed by van der Waals materials can support a wide range of electronic phases, including Mott insulators

We investigate Landau-quantized excitonic absorption and luminescence of monolayer ${\mathrm{WSe}}_{2}$ under magnetic field. We observe gate-dependent quantum oscillations in the bright exciton and trions (or exciton polarons) as well as the dark trions and their phonon replicas. Our results reveal spin- and valley-polarized Landau levels (LLs) with filling factors $n=+0$, $+1$ in the bottom conduction band and $n=\ensuremath{-}0$ to $\ensuremath{-}6$ in the top valence band, including the Berry-curvature-induced $n=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0$ LLs of massive Dirac fermions. The LL filling produces periodic plateaus in the exciton energy shift accompanied by sharp oscillations in the exciton absorption width and magnitude. This peculiar exciton behavior can be simulated by semiempirical calculations. The experimentally deduced $g$ factors of the conduction band ($g\ensuremath{\sim}2.5$) and valence band ($g\ensuremath{\sim}15$) exceed those predicted in a single-particle model ($g=1.5$, 5.5, respectively). Such $g$-factor enhancement implies strong many-body interactions in gated monolayer ${\mathrm{WSe}}_{2}$. The complex interplay between Landau quantization, excitonic effects, and many-body interactions makes monolayer ${\mathrm{WSe}}_{2}$ a promising platform to explore novel correlated quantum phenomena.

Nano-structuring is an extremely promising path to high performance thermoelectrics. Favorable improvements in thermal conductivity are attainable in many material systems, and theoretical work points to large improvements in electronic properties. However, realization of the electronic benefits in practical materials has been elusive experimentally. A key challenge is that experimental identification of the quantum confinement length, below which the thermoelectric power factor is significantly enhanced, remains elusive due to lack of simultaneous control of size and carrier density. Here we investigate gate tunable and temperature-dependent thermoelectric transport in $\gamma$ phase indium selenide ($\gamma$ InSe, n type semiconductor) samples with thickness varying from 7 to 29 nm. This allows us to properly map out dimension and doping space. Combining theoretical and experimental studies, we reveal that the sharper pre-edge of the conduction-band density of states arising from quantum confinement gives rise to an enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient and the power factor in the thinner InSe samples. Most importantly, we experimentally identify the role of the competition between quantum confinement length and thermal de Broglie wavelength in the enhancement of power factor. van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures made of two-dimensional materials have been demonstrated to be versatile architectures for optoelectronic applications due to strong light--matter interactions. However, most light-controlled phenomena and applications in the vdW heterostructures rely on positive photoconductance (PPC). Negative photoconductance (NPC) has not yet been reported in vdW heterostructures. Here we report the observation of the NPC in the ReS2/h-BN/MoS2 vdW heterostructure-based floating gate phototransistor. The fabricated devices exhibit excellent performance of nonvolatile memory without light illumination. More interestingly, we observe a gate-tunable transition between the PPC and the NPC under the light illumination. The observed NPC phenomenon can be attributed to charge transfer between the floating gate and the conduction channel. Furthermore, we show that control of NPC through light intensity is promising in realization of light-tunable multibit memory devices. Our results may enable potential applications in multifunctional memories and optoelectronic devices.

Layered metal chalcogenide materials provide a versatile platform to investigate emergent phenomena and two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity at/near the atomically thin limit. In particular, gate-induced interfacial superconductivity realized by the use of an electric-double-layer transistor (EDLT) has greatly extended the capability to electrically induce superconductivity in oxides, nitrides and transition metal chalcogenides and enable one to explore new physics, such as the Ising pairing mechanism. Exploiting gate-induced superconductivity in various materials can provide us with additional platforms to understand emergent interfacial superconductivity. Here, we report the discovery of gate-induced 2D superconductivity in layered 1T-SnSe2, a typical member of the main-group metal dichalcogenide (MDC) family, using an EDLT gating geometry. A superconducting transition temperature Tc around 3.9 K was demonstrated at the EDL interface. The 2D nature of the superconductivity therein was further confirmed based on 1) a 2D Tinkham description of the angle-dependent upper critical field, 2) the existence of a quantum creep state as well as a large ratio of the coherence length to the thickness of superconductivity. Interestingly, the in-plane approaching zero temperature was found to be 2-3 times higher than the Pauli limit, which might be related to an electric field-modulated spin-orbit interaction. Superconductors at the atomic two-dimensional limit are the focus of an enduring fascination in the condensed matter community. This is because, with reduced dimensions, the effects of disorders, fluctuations, and correlations in superconductors become particularly prominent at the atomic two-dimensional limit; thus such superconductors provide opportunities to tackle tough theoretical and experimental challenges. Here, based on the observation of ultrathin two-dimensional superconductivity in monolayer and bilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) with electric-double-layer gating, we found that the critical sheet carrier density required to achieve superconductivity in a monolayer MoS2 flake can be as low as 0.55 × 1014 cm−2, which is much lower than those values in the bilayer and thicker cases in previous report and also our own observations. Further comparison of the phonon dispersion obtained by ab initio calculations indicated that the phonon softening of the acoustic modes around the M point plays a key role in the gate-induced superconductivity within the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer theory framework. This result might help enrich the understanding of two-dimensional superconductivity with electric-double-layer gating. Experiments show that a softening of phonon modes aids gate-induced superconductivity in two-dimensional materials. As a material’s dimensions are reduced, the role of disorder and electronic correlations in defining the electronic properties become more prominent, and as the density of charge carriers is much lower, superconductivity is less likely to emerge. An international team of researchers led by Feng Mio and Baigeng Wang from Nanjing University and Harold Hwang from SLAC National Accelerator laboratory and Stanford University use an ionic liquid-based setup, which allows for high gate voltages to be applied, to demonstrate gate-induced superconductivity in monolayers and bilayers of a transition metal dichalcogenide. They show that a softening of the acoustic phonon modes allows for superconductivity to be realized in single layers with a lower carrier density than that needed in multilayers.

As one of the most important family members of two-dimensional (2D) materials, the growth and damage-free transfer of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) play crucial roles in their future applications. Here, we report a damage-free and highly efficient approach to transfer single and few-layer 2D TMDs to arbitrary substrates by dissolving a sacrificial water-soluble layer, which is formed underneath 2D TMD flakes simultaneously during the growth process. It is demonstrated, for monolayer MoS2, that no quality degradation is found after the transfer by performing transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence and electrical transport studies. The field effect mobility of the post-transfer MoS2 flakes was found to be improved by 2-3 orders compared with that of the as-grown ones. This approach was also demonstrated to be applicable to other TMDs, other halide salts as precursors, or other growth substrates, indicating its universality for other 2D materials. Our work may pave the way for material synthesis of future integrated electronic and optoelectronic devices based on 2D TMD materials.

Excitons and trions (or exciton polarons) in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are known to decay predominantly through intravalley transitions. Electron-hole recombination across different valleys can also play a significant role in the excitonic dynamics, but intervalley transitions are rarely observed in monolayer TMDs, because they violate the conservation of momentum. Here we reveal the intervalley recombination of dark excitons and trions through more than one path in monolayer ${\mathrm{WSe}}_{2}$. We observe the intervalley dark excitons, which can recombine by the assistance of defect scattering or chiral-phonon emission. We also reveal that a trion can decay in two distinct paths---through intravalley or intervalley electron-hole recombination---into two different final valley states. Although these two paths are energy degenerate, we can distinguish them by lifting the valley degeneracy under a magnetic field. In addition, the intra- and inter-valley trion transitions are coupled to zone-center and zone-corner chiral phonons, respectively, to produce distinct phonon replicas. The observed multipath optical decays of dark excitons and trions provide insight into the internal quantum structure of trions and the complex excitonic interactions with defects and chiral phonons in monolayer valley semiconductors.

In analogy to Rydberg states in hydrogen atoms, excitons in two-dimensional semiconductors host a series of internal states. The optical spectra of these Rydberg excitons are important to understand their diverse properties for novel optical and optoelectronic applications. Here, the authors have measured the photoluminescence spectra of 1$s$-5$s$ exciton Rydberg states in ultraclean monolayer WSe${}_{2}$ under a magnetic field. From the spectra, they determine the $g$-factors, exciton radii, and binding energies of various Rydberg excitons.

We report the observation and gate manipulation of intrinsic dark trions in monolayer WSe$_2$. By using ultraclean WSe$_2$ devices encapsulated by boron nitride, we directly resolve the weak photoluminescence of dark trions. The dark trions can be tuned continuously between negative and positive charged trions with electrostatic gating. We also reveal their spin triplet configuration and distinct valley optical emission by their characteristic Zeeman splitting under magnetic field. The dark trions exhibit large binding energy (14-16 meV). Their lifetime (~1.3 ns) is two orders of magnitude longer than the bright trion lifetime (~10 ps) and can be tuned between 0.4 to 1.3 ns by electrostatic gating. Such robust, optically detectable, and gate tunable dark trions provide a new path to realize electrically controllable trion transport in two-dimensional materials., 26 pages, 16 figures

We observe a set of three replica luminescent peaks at ~21.4 meV below the dark exciton, negative and positive dark trions (or exciton-polarons) in monolayer WSe2. The replica redshift energy matches the energy of the zone-center E"-mode optical phonons. The phonon replicas exhibit parallel gate dependence and same g-factors as the dark excitonic states, but follow the valley selection rules of the bright excitonic states. While the dark states exhibit out-of-plane transition dipole and valley-independent linearly polarized emission in the in-plane directions, their phonon replicas exhibit in-plane transition dipole and valley-dependent circularly polarized emission in the out-of-plane directions. Our results and symmetry analysis show that the K-valley dark exciton decays into a left-handed chiral phonon and a right-handed photon, whereas the K'-valley dark exciton decays into a right-handed chiral phonon and a left-handed photon. Such valley selection rules of chiral phonon replicas can be utilized to identify the valleys of the dark excitonic states and explore their chiral interactions with phonons., Comment: 37 pages, 5 figures

Two-dimensional layered heterostructures show great potential to develop optoelectronic systems. Here, we have investigated the photoresponse properties of two contact interfaces in few-layer graphene–WSe2 heterostructures. The photoresponsivity of graphene–WSe2 contact interface is about 2.67 mA/W, and the photoresponsivity of WSe2–metal contact interface is about 0.2 mA/W. Photocurrent images show that the two contact interfaces behave differently under drain voltage from − 0.5 V to 0.5 V. The photoresponsivity of one contact interface increases with the drain voltage, and that of the other decreases with the drain voltage. Experimental results and band diagram studies prove that the photoresponse properties of contact interfaces are tuned by small drain voltage. This study will be beneficial for understanding the effect of drain voltage on the heterostructures.

Van der Waals junctions of two-dimensional materials with an atomically sharp interface open up unprecedented opportunities to design and study functional heterostructures. Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides have shown tremendous potential for future applications due to their unique electronic properties and strong light-matter interaction. However, many important optoelectronic applications, such as broadband photodetection, are severely hindered by their limited spectral range and reduced light absorption. Here, we present a p-g-n heterostructure formed by sandwiching graphene with a gapless bandstructure and wide absorption spectrum in an atomically thin p-n junction to overcome these major limitations. We have successfully demonstrated a MoS2-graphene-WSe2 heterostructure for broadband photodetection in the visible to short-wavelength infrared range at room temperature that exhibits competitive device performance, including a specific detectivity of up to 1011 Jones in the near-infrared region. Due to the nontrivial topological band structure in type II Weyl semi-metal tungsten ditelluride (WTe

Indium selenide (InSe) has attracted tremendous research interest due to its high mobility and potential applications in next-generation electronics. However, the underlying transport mechanism of carriers in thin InSe at low temperatures remains unknown. Here we report the gate voltage and temperature-dependent magnetotransport properties of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-InSe transistor devices with Hall mobility up to $2455\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{c}{\mathrm{m}}^{2}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{V}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{s}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ at the temperature of 1.7 K. We observe a gate-tunable weak antilocalization behavior at lower magnetic field $B$, which shows a transition to weak localization at higher $B$ region. We find that the magnetotransport data agree well with the Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka theory. The conductivity and temperature dependence of phase-coherence length reveal that the electron-electron ($e\text{\ensuremath{-}}e$) interactions are dominated dephasing mechanism for electronic transport in $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-InSe at low temperatures. The maximum phase-coherence length is found to be 320 nm at 1.7 K, larger than that of monolayer $\mathrm{Mo}{\mathrm{S}}_{2}$ and few-layer black phosphorus. These results enrich the fundamental understanding of electronic transport properties of InSe.

Due to the non-trivial topological band structure in type-II Weyl semimetal Tungsten ditelluride (WTe2), unconventional properties may emerge in its superconducting phase. While realizing intrinsic superconductivity has been challenging in the type-II Weyl semimetal WTe2, proximity effect may open an avenue for the realization of superconductivity. Here, we report the observation of proximity-induced superconductivity with a long coherence length along c axis in WTe2 thin flakes based on a WTe2/NbSe2 van der Waals heterostructure. Interestingly, we also observe anomalous oscillations of the differential resistance during the transition from superconducting to normal state. Theoretical calculations show excellent agreement with experimental results, revealing that such a sub-gap anomaly is the intrinsic property of WTe2 in superconducting state induced by the proximity effect. Our findings enrich the understanding of superconducting phase of type-II Weyl semimetals, and pave the way for their future applications in topological quantum computing., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

Most of the potential applications of memristive devices adopt crossbar architecture for ultra-high density. One of the biggest challenges of the crossbar architecture is severe residue leakage current (sneak path) issue. A possible solution is introducing a selector device with strong nonlinear current–voltage (I–V) characteristics in series with each memristor in crossbar arrays. Here, we demonstrate a novel selector device based on graphene–oxide heterostructures, which successfully converts a typical linear TaO x memristor into a nonlinear device. The origin of the nonlinearity in the heterostructures is studied in detail, which highlights an important role of the graphene–oxide interfaces.

With unique distorted 1T structure and the associated in-plane anisotropic properties, mono- and few-layer $\mathrm{Re}{X}_{2}$ ($X=\mathrm{S},\mathrm{Se}$) have recently attracted particular interest. Based on experiment and first-principles calculations, we investigate the fracture behavior of $\mathrm{Re}{X}_{2}$. We find that the cleaved edges of $\mathrm{Re}{X}_{2}$ flakes usually form an angle of $\ensuremath{\sim}{120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ or $\ensuremath{\sim}{60}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$. In order to understand such phenomenon, we perform comprehensive investigations on the uniaxial tensile stress-strain relation of monolayer and multilayer $\mathrm{Re}{X}_{2}$ sheets. Our numerical calculation shows that the particular cleaved edges of $\mathrm{Re}{X}_{2}$ flakes are caused by unique anisotropic ultimate tensile strengths and critical strains. We also calculate the stress-strain relation of $\mathrm{WT}{\mathrm{e}}_{2}$, which explains why their cleaved edges are not corresponding to the principle axes. Our proposed mechanism about the fracture angle is also supported by the calculated cleavage energies and surface energies for different edge surfaces.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have recently emerged as promising candidates for future electronics and optoelectronics. While most of TMDs are intrinsic n-type semiconductors due to electron donating which originates from chalcogen vacancies, obtaining intrinsic high-quality p-type semiconducting TMDs has been challenging. Here, we report an experimental approach to obtain intrinsic p-type Tungsten (W)-based TMDs by substitutional Ta-doping. The obtained few-layer Ta-doped WSe2 (Ta0.01W0.99Se2) field-effect transistor (FET) devices exhibit competitive p-type performances, including ~10^6 current on/off at room temperature. We also demonstrate high quality van der Waals (vdW) p-n heterojunctions based on Ta0.01W0.99Se2/MoS2 structure, which exhibit nearly ideal diode characteristics (with an ideality factor approaching 1 and a rectification ratio up to 10^5) and excellent photodetecting performance. Black arsenic phosphorus–based photodetectors sense detect long-wave mid-infrared light with high detectivity at room temperature., The mid-infrared (MIR) spectral range, pertaining to important applications, such as molecular “fingerprint” imaging, remote sensing, free space telecommunication, and optical radar, is of particular scientific interest and technological importance. However, state-of-the-art materials for MIR detection are limited by intrinsic noise and inconvenient fabrication processes, resulting in high-cost photodetectors requiring cryogenic operation. We report black arsenic phosphorus–based long-wavelength IR photodetectors, with room temperature operation up to 8.2 μm, entering the second MIR atmospheric transmission window. Combined with a van der Waals heterojunction, room temperature–specific detectivity higher than 4.9 × 109 Jones was obtained in the 3- to 5-μm range. The photodetector works in a zero-bias photovoltaic mode, enabling fast photoresponse and low dark noise. Our van der Waals heterojunction photodetectors not only exemplify black arsenic phosphorus as a promising candidate for MIR optoelectronic applications but also pave the way for a general strategy to suppress 1/f noise in photonic devices.

The progress in exploiting new electronic materials and devices has been a major driving force in solid-state physics. As a new state of matter, a Weyl semimetal (WSM), particularly a type-II WSM, hosts Weyl fermions as emergent quasiparticles and may harbor novel electrical transport properties because of the exotic Fermi surface. Nevertheless, such a type-II WSM material has not been experimentally observed in nature. In this work, by performing systematic magneto-transport studies on thin films of a predicted material candidate WTe2, we observe notable angle-sensitive (between the electric and magnetic fields) negative longitudinal magnetoresistance (MR), which can likely be attributed to the chiral anomaly in WSM. This phenomenon also exhibits strong planar orientation dependence with the absence of negative longitudinal MR along the tungsten chains (a axis), which is consistent with the distinctive feature of a type-II WSM. By applying a gate voltage, we demonstrate that the Fermi energy can be tuned through the Weyl points via the electric field effect; this is the first report of controlling the unique transport properties in situ in a WSM system. The current integrated circuit (IC) technology based on conventional MOS-FET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor) is approaching the limit of miniaturization with increasing demand on energy. Several analog circuit applications based on graphene FETs have been demonstrated with less components comparing to the conventional technology. However, low on/off current ratio caused by the semimetal nature of graphene has severely hindered its practical applications. Here we report a graphene/MoTe2 van der Waals (vdW) vertical transistor with V-shaped ambipolar field effect transfer characteristics to overcome this challenge. Investigations on temperature dependence of transport properties reveal that gate tunable asymmetric barriers of the devices are account for the ambipolar behaviors. Furthermore, to demonstrate the analog circuit applications of such vdW vertical transistors, we successfully realized output polarity controllable (OPC) amplifier and frequency doubler. As the thinnest conductive and elastic material, graphene is expected to play a crucial role in post-Moore era. Besides applications on electronic devices, graphene has shown great potential for nano-electromechanical systems. While interlayer interactions play a key role in modifying the electronic structures of layered materials, no attention has been given to their impact on electromechanical properties. Here we report the positive piezoconductive effect observed in suspended bi- and multi-layer graphene. The effect is highly layer number dependent and shows the most pronounced response for tri-layer graphene. The effect, and its dependence on the layer number, can be understood as resulting from the strain-induced competition between interlayer coupling and intralayer transport, as confirmed by the numerical calculations based on the non-equilibrium Green's function method. Semiconducting two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides are emerging as top candidates for post-silicon electronics. While most of them exhibit isotropic behaviour, lowering the lattice symmetry could induce anisotropic properties, which are both scientifically interesting and potentially useful. Here we present atomically thin rhenium disulfide (ReS2) flakes with unique distorted 1T structure, which exhibit in-plane anisotropic properties. We fabricated monolayer and few-layer ReS2 field-effect transistors, which exhibit competitive performance with large current on/off ratios (∼107) and low subthreshold swings (100 mV per decade). The observed anisotropic ratio along two principle axes reaches 3.1, which is the highest among all known two-dimensional semiconducting materials. Furthermore, we successfully demonstrated an integrated digital inverter with good performance by utilizing two ReS2 anisotropic field-effect transistors, suggesting the promising implementation of large-scale two-dimensional logic circuits. Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides are emerging with tremendous potential in many optoelectronic applications due to their strong light-matter interactions. To fully explore their potential in photoconductive detectors, high responsivity and weak signal detection are required. Here, we present high responsivity phototransistors based on few-layer rhenium disulfide (ReS2). Depending on the back gate voltage, source drain bias and incident optical light intensity, the maximum attainable photoresponsivity can reach as high as 88,600 A W-1, which is a record value compared to other two-dimensional materials with similar device structures and two orders of magnitude higher than that of monolayer MoS2. Such high photoresponsivity is attributed to the increased light absorption as well as the gain enhancement due to the existence of trap states in the few-layer ReS2 flakes. It further enables the detection of weak signals, as successfully demonstrated with weak light sources including a lighter and limited fluorescent lighting. Lattice structure and symmetry of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials are of key importance to their fundamental mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical properties. Raman spectroscopy, as a convenient and nondestructive tool, however has its limitations on identifying all symmetry allowing Raman modes and determining the corresponding crystal structure of 2D layered materials with high symmetry like graphene and MoS2. Due to lower structural symmetry and extraordinary weak interlayer coupling of ReS2, we successfully identified all 18 first-order Raman active modes for bulk and monolayer ReS2. Without van der Waals (vdW) correction, our local density approximation (LDA) calculations successfully reproduce all the Raman modes. Our calculations also suggest no surface reconstruction effect and the absence of low frequency rigid-layer Raman modes below 100 cm-1. This study was aimed to design a new, accurate and easy-to-use water bath cryo-jaw, and try to solve the problems met in small animals achilles tendon mechanical testing. The muscle-tendon-bony units were fixed in the clamps. SD rats achilles tendon were randomly divided into group A and B. Group A was tested by the newly designed water bath cryo-jaw, while group B was treated by non-water bath cryo-jaw. The mechanical tests revealed that non of the samples of the newly-designed water bath cryo-jaw in group A slipped and fell off, and the achilles tendons were in a physiologically active state, but one of the group B samples slipped and fell off, and the others had the frozen phenomenon obviously. The maximum stress, fracture displacement and Young's modulus of the rats in group A were significantly different compared to those in group B (P0.05). In conclusion, the new water bath cryo-jaw has more advantages than traditional ones. It exhibits a good simulation in vivo in the environmental conditions for testing the mechanical properties of the achilles tendon.

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) hold great potential for cell therapy and tissue engineering. Neural crest stem cells (NCSCs) are multipotent that are capable of differentiating into mesenchymal lineages. In this study, we investigated whether iPSC-derived NCSCs (iPSC-NCSCs) have potential for tendon repair. Human iPSC-NCSCs were suspended in fibrin gel and transplanted into a rat patellar tendon window defect. At 4 weeks post-transplantation, macroscopical observation showed that the repair of iPSC-NCSC-treated tendons was superior to that of non-iPSC-NCSC-treated tendons. Histological and mechanical examinations revealed that iPSC-NCSCs treatment significantly enhanced tendon healing as indicated by the improvement in matrix synthesis and mechanical properties. Furthermore, transplanted iPSC-NCSCs produced fetal tendon-related matrix proteins, stem cell recruitment factors, and tenogenic differentiation factors, and accelerated the host endogenous repair process. This study demonstrates a potential strategy of employing iPSC-derived NCSCs for tendon tissue engineering.

We studied electrical transport properties including gate-tunable rectification inversion and polarity inversion, in atomically thin graphene/WSe2 heterojunctions. Such engrossing characteristics are attributed to the gate tunable mismatch of Fermi levels of graphene and WSe2. Also, such atomically thin heterostructure shows excellent performances on photodetection. The responsivity of 66.2 mA W−1 (without bias voltage) and 350 A W−1 (with 1 V bias voltage) can be reached. What is more, the devices show great external quantum efficiency of 800%, high detectivity of 1013 cm Hz1/2/W, and fast response time of 30 μs. Our study reveals that vertical stacking of 2D materials has great potential for multifunctional electronic and optoelectronic device applications in the future.
