The quantum spin systems Cu$_2$M'BO$_5$ (M' = Al, Ga) with the ludwigite crystal structure consist of a structurally ordered Cu$^{2+}$ sublattice in the form of three-leg ladders, interpenetrated by a structurally disordered sublattice with a statistically random site occupation by magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ and nonmagnetic Ga$^{3+}$ or Al$^{3+}$ ions. A microscopic analysis based on density-functional-theory calculations for Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ reveals a frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin model featuring five inequivalent antiferromagnetic exchanges. A broad low-temperature $^{11}$B nuclear magnetic resonance points to a considerable spin disorder in the system. In zero magnetic field, antiferromagnetic order sets in below $T_\text{N}$ $\approx$ 4.1 K and ~2.4 K for the Ga and Al compounds, respectively. From neutron diffraction, we find that the magnetic propagation vector in Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ is commensurate and lies on the Brillouin-zone boundary in the (H0L) plane, $\mathbf{q}_\text{m}$ = (0.45 0 -0.7), corresponding to a complex noncollinear long-range ordered structure with a large magnetic unit cell. Muon spin relaxation is monotonic, consisting of a fast static component typical for complex noncollinear spin systems and a slow dynamic component originating from the relaxation on low-energy spin fluctuations. Gapless spin dynamics in the form of a diffuse quasielastic peak is also evidenced by inelastic neutron scattering. Most remarkably, application of a magnetic field above 1 T destroys the static long-range order, which is manifested in the gradual broadening of the magnetic Bragg peaks. We argue that such a crossover from a magnetically long-range ordered state to a spin-glass regime may result from orphan spins on the structurally disordered magnetic sublattice, which are polarized in magnetic field and thus act as a tuning knob for field-controlled magnetic disorder., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

We present an extensive study of the structural, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of high-quality monocrystals of the two heterometallic oxyborates from the ludwigite family: Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ and Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ in the temperature range above 2 K. The distinctive feature of the investigated structures is the selective distribution of Cu and Ga/Al cations. The unit cell of Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ and Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ contains four nonequivalent crystallographic sites of metal ions. Two sites in the structure from four nonequivalent crystallographic sites of metal ions of Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ are fully occupied by Cu atoms which form the quasi one-dimensional chains along the a-axis. For Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ all sites are partially occupied by Al and Cu atoms. The joint analysis of low-temperature data on magnetic susceptibility and magnetic contribution to the specific heat showed that Cu$_2$AlBO$_5$ and Cu$_2$GaBO$_5$ exhibit an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_{\rm N} \approx 3$ and 4 K, respectively. The magnetic contributions to the specific heat for both compounds were obtained after subtracting the phonon contribution. It is shown that the external magnetic field above 2.5 T leads to a broadening of the magnetic phase transition indicating suppression of the long-range antiferromagnetic order.

The quantum-spin S = 1=2 chain system Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ is of high interest due to competing anti-ferromagnetic intra-chain J and inter-chain exchange J' interactions and represents a paramount example for Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons [R. Coldea et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 137202 (2002)]. Substitution of chlorine by bromine allows tuning the competing exchange interactions and corresponding magnetic frustration. Here we report on electron spin resonance (ESR) in single crystals of Cs$_2$CuCl$_{4-x}$Br$_x$ with the aim to analyze the evolution of anisotropic exchange contributions. The main source of the ESR linewidth is attributed to the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The vector components of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are determined from the angular dependence of the ESR spectra using a high-temperature approximation. The obtained results support the site selectivity of the Br substitution suggested from the evolution of lattice parameters and magnetic susceptibility dependent on the Br concentration.

In the present work we have performed an ab initio calculation of vibrational properties of CuTe2O5 by means of density functional theory method. One has compared calculated values with known experimental data on Raman and infrared spectroscopy in order to verify the obtained results. Lattice contribution to the heat capacity, obtained from the ab initio simulations was added to magnetic contribution calculated from the simple spin hamiltonian model in order to obtain total heat capacity. Obtained result are in good agreement to the experimental data. Thus, the DFT methods could complement the experimental and theoretical studying of low-dimensional magnetic systems such as CuTe2O5., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

We report on electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of the spin relaxation in Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$. The main source of the ESR linewidth at temperatures $T \leq 150$ K is attributed to the uniform Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The vector components of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are determined from the angular dependence of the ESR spectra using a high-temperature approximation. Both the angular and temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth have been analyzed using a self-consistent quantum-mechanical approach. In addition analytical expressions based on a quasi-classical picture for spin fluctuations are derived, which show good agreement with the quantum-approach for temperatures $T \geq 2J/k_{\rm B} \approx 15$ K. A small modulation of the ESR linewidth observed in the $ac$-plane is attributed to the anisotropic Zeeman interaction, which reflects the two magnetically nonequivalent Cu positions.

We report on magnetization and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements of Sr$_{2}$VO$_4$ with orthorhombic symmetry. In this dimer system the $V^{4+}$ ions are in tetrahedral environment and are coupled by an antiferromagnetic intra-dimer exchange constant $J/k_B \approx$ 100 K to form a singlet ground state without any phase transitions between room temperature and 2 K. Based on an extended-H\"{u}ckel-Tight-Binding analysis we identify the strongest exchange interaction to occur between two inequivalent vanadium sites via two intermediate oxygen ions. The ESR absorption spectra can be well described by a single Lorentzian line with an effective g-factor $g$ = 1.89. The temperature dependence of the ESR intensity is well described by a dimer model in agreement with the magnetization data. The temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth can be modeled by a superposition of a linear increase with temperature with a slope $\alpha$ = 1.35 Oe/K and a thermally activated behavior with an activation energy $\Delta/k_B$ = 1418 K, both of which point to spin-phonon coupling as the dominant relaxation mechanism in this compound., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report on magnetization and specific heat measurements on single-crystalline CuTe2O5. The experimental data are directly compared to theoretical results for two different spin structures, namely an alternating spin-chain and a two-dimensional (2D) coupled dimer model, obtained by Das et al. [Phys. Rev. B 77, 224437 (2008)]. While the analysis of the specific heat does not allow to distinguish between the two models, the magnetization data is in good agreement with the 2D coupled dimer model., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Considering spin-orbit coupling, the tetragonal crystal-field, and all relevant superexchange processes including quantum interference, we derive expressions for the energy levels of the vanadium ions in tetragonal Sr2VO4. The used parameters of the model Hamiltonian allow to describe well the excitation spectra observed in neutron scattering and optical experiments at low temperatures. The free energy exhibits a minimum which corresponds to a novel alternating spin-orbital order with strong thermal fluctuation of the orbital mixing parameter., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We report on the optical excitation spectra in Sr$_2$VO$_4$. The phonon modes are assigned and their evolution with temperature is discussed in the frame of the different phase transitions crossed upon cooling. Besides the expected infrared-active phonons we observe two additional excitations at about 290 cm$^{-1}$ and 840 cm$^{-1}$ which could correspond to electronic transitions of the V$^{4+}$ ions. The spin dynamics of the prototypical quasi one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin S=1/2 chain KCuF3 is investigated by electron spin resonance spectroscopy. Our analysis shows that the peculiarities of the spin dynamics require a new dynamical form of the antisymmetric anisotropic spin-spin interaction. This dynamical Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction is related to strong oscillations of the bridging fuorine ions perpendicular to the crystallographic c axis. This new mechanism allows to resolve consistently the controversies in observation of the magnetic and structural properties of this orbitally ordered perovskite compound., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We investigated the magnetic properties of the system CuTe2O5 by susceptibility and electron spin resonance measurements. The anisotropy of the effective g-factors and the ESR linewidth indicates that the anticipated structural dimer does not correspond to the singlet-forming magnetic dimer. Moreover, the spin susceptibility of CuTe2O5 can only be described by taking into account interdimer interactions of the same order of magnitude than the intradimer coupling. Analyzing the exchange couplings in the system we identify the strongest magnetic coupling between two Cu ions to be mediated by super-super exchange interaction via a bridging Te ligand, while the superexchange coupling between the Cu ions of the structural dimer only results in the second strongest coupling.

The strong line broadening observed in electron spin resonance on NaV$_2$O$_5$ is found to originate from an unusual type of the symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction with simultaneous spin-orbit coupling on both sites. The microscopically derived anisotropic exchange constant is almost two orders of magnitude larger than the one obtained from conventional estimations. Based on this result we systematically evaluate the anisotropy of the ESR linewidth in terms of the symmetric anisotropic exchange, only, and we find microscopic evidence for precursor effects of the charge ordering already below 150 K., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. We report on the discovery of a novel triangular phase regime in the system La1-xSrxMnO3 by means of electron spin resonance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This phase is characterized by the coexistence of ferromagnetic entities within the globally paramagnetic phase far above the magnetic ordering temperature. The nature of this phase can be understood in terms of Griffiths singularities arising due to the presence of correlated quenched disorder in the orthorhombic phase., Comment: accepted for publication in PRL

The energy-level scheme and wave functions of the titanium ions in LaTiO$_{3}$ are calculated using crystal-field theory and spin-orbit coupling. The theoretically derived temperature dependence and anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility agree well with experimental data obtained in an untwinned single crystal. The refined fitting procedure reveals an almost isotropic molecular field and a temperature dependence of the van Vleck susceptibility. The charge distribution of the 3d--electron on the Ti positions and the principle values of the quadrupole moments are derived and agree with NMR data and recent measurements of orbital momentum $$ and crystal-field splitting. We investigated the paramagnetic resonance in single crystals of LiCuVO$_4$ with special attention to the angular variation of the absorption spectrum. To explain the large resonance linewidth of the order of 1 kOe, we analyzed the anisotropic exchange interaction in the chains of edge-sharing CuO$_6$ octahedra, taking into account the ring-exchange geometry of the nearest-neighbor coupling via two symmetric rectangular Cu-O bonds. The exchange parameters, which can be estimated from theoretical considerations, nicely agree with the parameters obtained from the angular dependence of the linewidth. The anisotropy of this magnetic ring exchange is found to be much larger than it is usually expected from conventional estimations which neglect the bonding geometry. Hence, the data yield the evidence that in copper oxides with edge-sharing structures the role of the orbital degrees of freedom is strongly enhanced. We present a comprehensive analysis of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and crystal-field parameters using the angular dependence of the paramagnetic resonance shift and linewidth in single crystals of La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3 within the orthorhombic Jahn-Teller distorted phase. The Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (~ 1K) results from the tilting of the MnO_6 octahedra against each other. The crystal-field parameters D and E are found to be of comparable magnitude (~ 1K) with D ~= -E. This indicates a strong mixing of the |3z^2-r^2> and |x^2-y^2> states for the real orbital configuration., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

The magnetic resonance spectrum of spin clusters formed in spin-Peierls magnets in the vicinity of impurity ions was investigated. The observed temperature dependences of the effective g-factor and the linewidth of the electron spin resonance (ESR) in crystals of Cu(1-x)Ni(x)GeO(3) are described in the model of the exchange narrowing of the two-component spectrum with one component ascribed to spin clusters and exhibiting an anomalous value of the $g$-factor and the other related to triplet excitations. An estimation of the size of the suppressed dimerization region around the impurity ion is obtained (this region includes about 30 copper ions). The dependence of the effective g-factor and the ESR linewidth on the impurity concentration at low temperatures indicates the interaction of clusters., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, to be published in JETP v.120, July 2001

ESR of the pure monocrystals of CuGeO3 is studied in the frequency range 9-75 GHz and in the temperature interval 1.2-25 K. The splitting of the ESR line into several spectral components is observed below 5 K, in the temperature range where the magnetic susceptibility is suppressed by the spin-Peierls dimerization. The analysis of the magnetic resonance signals allows one to separate the signals of the S=1/2- and S=1 defects of the spin-Peierls phase. The value of g-factor of these signals is close to that of the Cu-ion. The additional line of the magnetic resonance is characterized by an anomalous value of the g-factor and by the threshold-like increase of the microwave susceptibility when the microwave power is increasing. ESR-study of the Ni-doped spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3 has been performed in the frequency range 9-75 GHz. At low temperatures the g-factor is smaller than the value expected for Cu- and Ni-ions. This anomaly is explained by the formation of magnetic clusters around the Ni-ions within a nonmagnetic spin-Peierls matrix. The transition into the AFM-state detected earlier by neutron scattering for doped samples was studied by means of ESR. For x=0.032 a gap in the magnetic resonance spectrum is found below the Neel temperature and the spectrum is well described by the theory of antiferromagnetic resonance based on the molecular field approximation. For x=0.017 the spectrum below the Neel point remained gapless. The gapless spectrum of the antiferromagnetic state in weekly doped samples is attributed to the small value of the Neel order parameter and to the magnetically disordered spin-Peierls background., Comment: 16 pages, LATEX, 12 figures, submitted to Journal of Physics : Condensed Matter
