Background: Oral isotretinoin is the most effective systemic treatment for acne patients who fail to respond to other forms of therapies. However, hesitations and concerns regarding its side effect profile may detain the patients from treatment. This study aimed to develop and validate the Isotretinoin Hesitancy Scale (IHS) among acne patients. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted with 100 acne patients who had not used isotretinoin previously. A 22‐item scale was created based on the related literature and expert opinions. The items of the scale related to beliefs and worries about isotretinoin were formatted with response options: agree, indecisive, and disagree. In this study, construct validity was tested with exploratory factor analysis, and reliability was tested with internal consistency and split‐half reliability. Results: The results of exploratory factor analysis indicated a three‐factor solution with a total of 14 items, explaining 57% of the total variance. The first factor (Hesitancy Related to Reversible Adverse Effects: 6 items) accounted for 30% of the variance, the second factor (Hesitancy Related to Irreversible Adverse Effects: 4 items) accounted for 16% of the variance and the third factor (Isotretinoin‐related Anxiety: 4 items) accounted 11% of the variance. The internal consistency of the three factors was calculated as 0.79, 0.78, and 0.72, respectively. The Cronbach's alpha score of the total scale was found to be 0.81, and split‐half reliability was found to be 0.87. Conclusions: The IHS is the first scale that provides a valid and reliable assessment of isotretinoin hesitancy in acne patients. Eliminating isotretinoin hesitancy may reduce acne‐related clinical and psychosocial consequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Pityriasis lichenoides (PL) is a papulosquamous disease affecting both children and adults, for which narrowband‐UVB (NB‐UVB) phototherapy is regarded as a commonly used treatment option. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of NB‐UVB phototherapy in the management of PL and to compare response rates in pediatric and adult age groups. Materials and methods: This observational, retrospective study included 20 PL patients (12 pityriasis lichenoides chronica; PLC, 8 pityriasis lichenoides et varioliformis acuta; PLEVA) who failed to respond to other treatment modalities. The data for this study were collected retrospectively from patient follow‐up forms in the phototherapy unit. Results: A complete response (CR) was obtained in all pediatric patients with PL, while 53.8% of adult patients had achieved CR. The mean cumulative dose required to achieve the CR was higher in pediatric patients than adult patients with PL (p <.05). The CR was achieved in 6 (75%) of 8 PLEVA patients, while 8 (66.7%) of 12 PLC patients had reached to CR. The mean number of exposures for patients with PLC to achieve a CR was higher than patients with PLEVA (p <.05). Erythema was the most common adverse effect during phototherapy particularly in 5 (35.7%) of the patients with PL who had achieved CR. Conclusions: NB‐UVB is an effective and well‐tolerated treatment option for PL especially in diffuse types. A higher response can be obtained in children with higher cumulative dose. Patients with PLC may require more exposures for CR than patients with PLEVA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of acne rosacea among adults, examine some related variables and evaluate the quality of life. Methods: This cross-sectional study including 2226 individuals with an age of 18 years old-above who lived in Mahmudiye-Eskisehir, Turkey. The study group was visited in their houses individually and agreed to participate the study. The researchers completed the survey forms during face-to-face interviews, performed the examinations. The Short Form-36 scale was used to assess the quality of life. The Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U test, Logistic Regression Analysis were used in the statistical analyses. Results and Conclusions: Of the study group 910 (40.9%) were male. Their ages ranged from 18-95 years (Mean age: 47.2±16.7). The prevalence of acne rosacea was 22.6% (n = 504). Being over the age of 55, obesity, primary school or lower education, history of complaints related to the face, family history of acne rosacea and personal history of head and/or neck treatment were identified as important risk factors for acne rosacea. Participants with acne rosacea had low quality of life based on the physical function subscale. It may be useful to perform intermittent screening, directing suspect cases to a specialist physician for early diagnosis-treatment and raise awareness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dermatomyositis is a well-known autoimmune disorder. On the other hand, juvenile amyopathic dermatomyositis (JADM) occurs rather rarely. Here, we report an unusual case in a 9-year-old Turkish boy showing a unilateral linear inflammatory skin lesion that was followed, after 16 months, by the appearance of bilateral disseminated features JADM. Objectives: The purpose of our study was to compare healthy lifestyle behaviors between psoriasis patients and healthy controls., Methods: This case-control study included 80 psoriasis patients and 80 sex- and age- matched healthy controls aged over 18. Participants completed the socio-demographic data form and the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP-II). The HPLP-II consists of 52 items and measures six components of health-promoting behavior outcomes: Nutrition, physical activity, health responsibility, spiritual growth, interpersonal relations, and stress management. Higher scores show that the individual applies the specified health behaviors at a high level., Results: HPLP-II total scores were 128.3±21.1 in patient group and 132.5±22.3 in control group. Based on the scores, psoriasis patients showed a moderate level of health-promoting lifestyle, while controls showed a good level of health-promoting lifestyle. Spiritual growth score of patients (mean±SD = 25.6±4.9) was statistically lower than the controls (mean±SD = 27.3±4.5) (p=0.040). In addition, spiritual growth score and disease duration were negatively correlated in the patient group (r=-0.287, p=0.01). Furthermore, nutrition score of those with additional comorbidity was significantly higher than those with psoriasis alone in patient group (p=0.002)., Conclusion: This is the first study to compare healthy lifestyle behaviors of psoriasis patients and healthy volunteers in Turkish population. Objectives: Sensitization of allergens varies among societies and also it is influenced by various factors, such as age and gender. It may even change over the years. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the patch test results in patients with contact dermatitis (CD) in our center., Methods: European standard series patch test results of patients with CD between 2017 and 2018 were evaluated retrospectively., Results: Of the 135 patients, 65 (48.1%) were males, 70 (51.9%) were females. The mean age of patients was 41.43±14.26 (11-78) years. In 78 (57.8%) patients, a positive reaction against at least one allergen was detected. The most common allergens were nickel sulfate (27.4%), potassium dichromate (14.8%), cobalt chloride (11.9%), textile dye mix (8.1%), fragrance mix i, ii (6.7%) and balsam of Peru (4.4%). The sensitization of nickel sulfate was higher in females and sensitization of cobalt chloride and potassium dichromate in males (p=0.03, 0.05, 0.03, respectively). In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, age was independently related to a positive reaction against at least one allergen., Conclusion: Nickel sulfate, potassium dichromate, cobalt chloride and textile dye mix were the most common allergens. Introduction: Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory dermatosis which develops due to the effect of genetic and environmental factors., Aim: To evaluate the oxidative stress in rosacea patients by measuring serum total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) levels in our study., Material and Methods: Our study included rosacea patients and healthy volunteers aged between 18 and 65 years. Total antioxidant status, TOS and AOPP levels were measured and OSI was calculated., Results: The study included 70 rosacea patients and 30 healthy volunteers as a control group. When TAS, TOS, OSI and AOPP levels were compared between rosacea and control groups, there was no difference for OSI levels; while TAS, TOS and AOPP levels were significantly higher in the rosacea group ( p = 0.151, p = 0.013, p = 0.034, p = 0.017, respectively). In the rosacea group, there was no correlation between TAS, TOS, OSI and AOPP levels and disease duration. Besides there was no difference between family history, rosacea type, symptom frequency and ocular involvement and TAS, TOS, OSI and AOPP levels in the rosacea group., Conclusions: We observed that serum TAS, TOS and AOPP levels were significantly higher in rosacea patients, but there was no significant difference among the disease activity parameters.
