The growing complexity of networks and the variety of future scenarios with diverse and often stringent performance requirements call for a higher level of automation. Intent-based management emerges as a solution to attain high level of automation, enabling human operators to solely communicate with the network through high-level intents. The intents consist of the targets in the form of expectations (i.e., latency expectation) from a service and based on the expectations the required network configurations should be done accordingly. It is almost inevitable that when a network action is taken to fulfill one intent, it can cause negative impacts on the performance of another intent, which results in a conflict. In this paper, we aim to address the conflict issue and autonomous management of intent-based networking, and propose an online learning method based on the hierarchical multi-armed bandits approach for an effective management. Thanks to this hierarchical structure, it performs an efficient exploration and exploitation of network configurations with respect to the dynamic network conditions. We show that our algorithm is an effective approach regarding resource allocation and satisfaction of intent expectations.

Future networks are anticipated to enable exciting applications and industrial services ranging from Multisensory Extended Reality to Holographic and Haptic communication. These services are accompanied by high bandwidth requirements and/or require low latency and low reliability, which leads to the need for scarce and expensive resources. Cloud and edge computing offer different functionalities to these applications that require communication, computing, and caching (3C) resources working collectively. Hence, a paradigm shift is necessary to enable the joint management of the 3Cs in the edge-cloud continuum. We argue that In-Network Computing (INC) is the missing element that completes the edge-cloud continuum. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the driving use-cases, explores the synergy between INC and 3C, and emphasizes the crucial role of INC. A discussion on the opportunities and challenges posed by INC is held from various perspectives, including hardware implementation, architectural design, and regulatory and commercial aspects.

Real-time video surveillance has become a crucial technology for smart cities, made possible through the large-scale deployment of mobile and fixed video cameras. In this paper, we propose situation-aware streaming, for real-time identification of important events from live-feeds at the source rather than a cloud based analysis. For this, we first identify the frames containing a specific situation and assign them a high scale-of-importance (SI). The identification is made at the source using a tiny neural network (having a small number of hidden layers), which incurs a small computational resource, albeit at the cost of accuracy. The frames with a high SI value are then streamed with a certain required Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) to retain the frame quality, while the remaining ones are transmitted with a small SNR. The received frames are then analyzed using a deep neural network (with many hidden layers) to extract the situation accurately. We show that the proposed scheme is able to reduce the required power consumption of the transmitter by 38.5% for 2160p (UHD) video, while achieving a classification accuracy of 97.5%, for the given situation.

This article studies effective communication, one of the three forms identified by Weaver and Shannon, as an enabler for the upcoming 6G use cases. The envisioned tactile, holographic, and multi-sensory communications require bandwidths in the order of terabits per second and latencies in the order of microseconds for an immersive experience. We argue that a theoretical framework for transporting information tailored to end-users' goals is necessary to support such applications. Different from the recently emerging discussions focusing on the meaning of exchanged messages, we focus on using these messages to take actions in the desired way. We highlight the essential characteristics of distributed knowledge accumulation as a facilitator for this upcoming paradigm, and discuss the challenges of making effective communications a reality and the potential opportunities for future research to address these challenges. In a real-life use case, we showcase the potential reduction in the number of bits transferred owing to the transferred accumulated knowledge.

The network performance is usually assessed by drive tests, where teams of people with specially equipped vehicles physically drive out to test various locations throughout a radio network. However, intelligent and autonomous troubleshooting is considered a crucial enabler for 5G- and 6G-networks. In this paper, we propose an architecture for performing virtual drive tests by facilitating radio-quality data from the user equipment. Our architecture comprises three main components: i) a pattern recognizer that learns a typical pattern for the application from application Key Performance Indicators (KPI); ii) a predictor for mapping network KPI with the application KPI; iii) an anomaly detector that compares the predicted application performance with that of the typical application pattern. In this work, we use a commercial state-of-the-art network optimization tool to collect network and application KPI at different geographical locations and at various times of the day for training an initial learning model. We perform extensive numerical analysis to demonstrate key parameters impacting correct video quality prediction and anomaly detection. We show that the playback time is the single most important parameter affecting the video quality, since video packets are usually buffered ahead of time during the playback. However, radio frequency (RF) performance indicators characterizing the quality of the cellular connection improve the QoE estimation in exceptional cases. We demonstrate the efficacy of our approach by showing that the mean maximum F1-score of our method is 77%. 6G and beyond networks tend towards fully intelligent and adaptive design in order to provide better operational agility in maintaining universal wireless access and supporting a wide range of services and use cases while dealing with network complexity efficiently. Such enhanced network agility will require developing a self-evolving capability in designing both the network architecture and resource management to intelligently utilize resources, reduce operational costs, and achieve the coveted quality of service (QoS). To enable this capability, the necessity of considering an integrated vertical heterogeneous network (VHetNet) architecture appears to be inevitable due to its high inherent agility. Moreover, employing an intelligent framework is another crucial requirement for self-evolving networks to deal with real-time network optimization problems. Hence, in this work, to provide a better insight on network architecture design in support of self-evolving networks, we highlight the merits of integrated VHetNet architecture while proposing an intelligent framework for self-evolving integrated vertical heterogeneous networks (SEI-VHetNets). The impact of the challenges associated with SEI-VHetNet architecture, on network management is also studied considering a generalized network model. Furthermore, the current literature on network management of integrated VHetNets along with the recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML) solutions are discussed. Accordingly, the core challenges of integrating AI/ML in SEI-VHetNets are identified. Future intelligent systems will consist of a massive number of battery-less sensors, where quick and accurate aggregation of sensor data will be of paramount importance. Over-the-air computation (AirComp) is a promising technology wherein sensors concurrently transmit their measurements over the wireless channel, and a reader receives the noisy version of a function of measurements due to the superposition property. A key challenge in AirComp is the accurate power alignment of individual transmissions, addressed previously by using conventional precoding methods. In this paper, we investigate a UAVenabled backscatter communication framework, wherein UAV acts both as a power emitter and reader. The mobility of the reader is leveraged to replace the complicated precoding at sensors, where UAV first collects sum channel gains in the first flyover, and then, use these to estimate the actual aggregated sensor data in the second flyover. Our results demonstrate improvements of up to 10 dB in MSE compared to that of a benchmark case where UAV is incognizant of sum channel gains., Comment: 4 Pages, 3 figures

It is well known that opportunistic scheduling algorithms are throughput optimal under dynamic channel and network conditions. However, these algorithms achieve a hypothetical rate region which does not take into account the overhead associated with channel probing and feedback required to obtain the full channel state information at every slot. In this work, we design a joint scheduling and channel probing algorithm by considering the overhead of obtaining the channel state information. We adopt a correlated and non-stationary channel model, which is more realistic than those used in the literature. We use concepts from learning and information theory to accurately track channel variations to minimize the number of channels probed at every slot, while scheduling users to maximize the achievable rate region of the network. More specifically, we employ Gaussian Process Regression that enable us to predict future channel state and also provide a way to measure uncertainty in the learning and prediction. Simulation results show that with the proposed algorithm, the network can carry higher user traffic. The proposed solution can be utilized in more complex and heterogeneous environments such as 5G and beyond networks where the model free approach is needed.

We study collaborative machine learning (ML) across wireless devices, each with its own local dataset. Offloading these datasets to a cloud or an edge server to implement powerful ML solutions is often not feasible due to latency, bandwidth and privacy constraints. Instead, we consider federated edge learning (FEEL), where the devices share local updates on the model parameters rather than their datasets. We consider a heterogeneous cellular network (HCN), where small cell base stations (SBSs) orchestrate FL among the mobile users (MUs) within their cells, and periodically exchange model updates with the macro base station (MBS) for global consensus. We employ gradient sparsification and periodic averaging to increase the communication efficiency of this hierarchical federated learning (FL) framework. We then show using CIFAR-10 dataset that the proposed hierarchical learning solution can significantly reduce the communication latency without sacrificing the model accuracy.

Due to the large size of the training data, distributed learning approaches such as federated learning have gained attention recently. However, the convergence rate of distributed learning suffers from heterogeneous worker performance. In this paper, we consider an incentive mechanism for workers to mitigate the delays in completion of each batch. We analytically obtained equilibrium solution of a Stackelberg game. Content storage at the network edge is a promising solution to mitigate the excessive traffic load due to on-demand streaming applications as well as to reduce the streaming delay. To this end, cache-enabled cellular architectures can be utilized to increase the provided quality-of-service (QoS) and to reduce the network cost. However, there are certain issues to be considered in the design of the content storage strategy such that the contents should be refreshed in order to responds user`s expectations. Using a frequent cache refreshment strategy the ratio of satisfied users can be increased at an increasing network cost. In this paper, we introduce a cache refreshment strategy via leveraging learning techniques so that users' tolerance to the age of content is learned and the content is refreshed accordingly.

This work considers a system with two energy harvesting (EH) nodes transmitting to a common destination over a random access channel. The amount of harvested energy is assumed to be random and independent over time, but correlated among the nodes possibly with respect to their relative position. A threshold-based transmission policy is developed for the maximization of the expected aggregate network throughput. Assuming that there is no a priori channel state or EH information available to the nodes, the aggregate network throughput is obtained. The optimal thresholds are determined for two practically important special cases: i) at any time only one of the sensors harvests energy due to, for example, physical separation of the nodes; ii) the nodes are spatially close, and at any time, either both nodes or none of them harvests energy.

In this work, communication over a time-correlated point-to-point wireless channel is studied for an energy harvesting (EH) transmitter. In this model, we take into account the time and energy cost of acquiring channel state information. At the beginning of the time slot, the EH transmitter, has to choose among three possible actions: i) deferring the transmission to save its energy for future use, ii) transmitting without sensing, and iii) sensing the channel before transmission. At each time slot, the transmitter chooses one of the three possible actions to maximize the total expected discounted number of bits transmitted over an infinite time horizon. This problem can be formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) which is then converted to an ordinary MDP by introducing a belief on the channel state, and the optimal policy is shown to exhibit a threshold behavior on the belief state, with battery-dependent threshold values. Optimal threshold values and corresponding optimal performance are characterized through numerical simulations, and it is shown that having the sensing action and intelligently using it to track the channel state improves the achievable long-term throughput significantly., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1703.10519

In this paper, we consider a class of wireless powered communication devices using hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) protocol to ensure reliable communications. In particular, we analyze the trade-off between accumulating mutual information and harvesting RF energy at the receiver of a point-to-point link over a time-varying independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) channel. The transmitter is assumed to have a constant energy source while the receiver relies, solely, on the RF energy harvested from the received signal. At each time slot, the incoming RF signal is split between information accumulation and energy accumulation with the objective of minimizing the expected number of re-transmissions. A major finding of this work is that the optimal policy minimizing the expected number of re-transmissions utilizes the incoming RF signal to either exclusively harvest energy or to accumulate mutual information. In this work, we consider an energy harvesting device (EHD) served by an access point with a single antenna that is used for both wireless power transfer (WPT) and data transfer. The objective is to maximize the expected throughput of the EHD over a finite horizon when the channel state information is only available causally. The EHD is energized by WPT for a certain duration, which is subject to optimization, and then, EHD transmits its information bits to the AP until the end of the time horizon by employing optimal dynamic power allocation. The joint optimization problem is modeled as a dynamic programming problem. The recent evolution of ambient backscattering technology has the potential to provide long-range and low-power wireless communications. In this work, we study the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted backscatter networks where the UAV acts both as a mobile power transmitter and as an information collector. We aim to maximize the number of successfully decoded bits in the uplink while minimizing the UAV's flight time by optimizing its altitude. Power-domain NOMA scheme is employed in the uplink. An optimization framework is presented to identify the trade-off between numerous network parameters, such as UAV's altitude, number of backscatter devices, and backscatter coefficients. Numerical results show that an optimal altitude is computable for various network setups and that the impact of backscattering reflection coefficients on the maximum network throughput is significant. In this letter, we consider the control of an energy self-sufficient receiver in a multi-access network with simultaneous wireless information and energy transfer. Multiple transmitters send data to a common receiver whose only source of energy is a finite size battery which is recharged only from the energy harvested from incoming RF signals. The nodes access the channel randomly resulting in a packet collision when multiple transmitters simultaneously access the channel. The receiver takes samples from the received RF signal to calculate the probability of a collision. The objective is to maximize the receiver goodput subject to the instantaneous availability of receiver energy. We develop an asymptotically optimal dynamic control algorithm, where the receiver makes an energy harvesting or decoding decision according to the current channel measurements and battery level.

In this paper, an interference network with arbitrary number of transmitters and receivers is studied, where each transmitter is equipped with a finite size cache. We obtain an information-theoretic lower bound on both the peak normalized delivery time (NDT), and the \textit{expected} NDT of cache-aided interference networks with uniform content popularity. For the peak NDT, we show that our lower bound is strictly tighter than the bound in the literature for small cache sizes. In this work, we study the trade-off between the cache capacity and the user delay for a cooperative Small Base Station (SBS) coded caching system with mobile users. First, a delay-aware coded caching policy, which takes into account the popularity of the files and the maximum re-buffering delay to minimize the average rebuffering delay of a mobile user under a given cache capacity constraint is introduced. Subsequently, we address a scenario where some files are served by the macro-cell base station (MBS) when the cache capacity of the SBSs is not sufficient to store all the files in the library. For this scenario, we develop a coded caching policy that minimizes the average amount of data served by the MBS under an average re-buffering delay constraint.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising technology that provides the network a way to replenish the batteries of the remote devices by utilizing RF transmissions. We study a class of harvest-first-transmit-later type of WPT policy, where an access point (AP) first employs RF power transfer to recharge a wireless powered device (WPD) for a certain period subjected to optimization, and then, the harvested energy is subsequently used by the WPD to transmit its data bits back to the AP over a finite horizon. A significant challenge regarding the studied WPT scenario is the time-varying nature of the wireless channel linking the WPD to the AP. We first investigate as a benchmark the offline case where the channel realizations are known non-causally prior to the starting of the horizon. For the offline case, by finding the optimal WPT duration and power allocations in the data transmission period, we derive an upper bound on the throughput of the WPD. We then focus on the online counterpart of the problem where the channel realizations are known causally. We prove that the optimal WPT duration obeys a time-dependent threshold form depending on the energy state of the WPD. In the subsequent data transmission stage, the optimal transmit power allocation for the WPD is shown to be of a fractional structure where at each time slot a fraction of energy depending on the current channel and a measure of future channel state expectations is allocated for data transmission. We numerically show that the online policy performs almost identical to the upper bound. We then consider a data sensing application, where the WPD adjusts the sensing resolution to balance between the quality of the sensed data and the probability of successfully delivering it. This paper studies cache-aided interference networks with arbitrary number of transmitters and receivers, whereby each transmitter has a cache memory of finite size. Each transmitter fills its cache memory from a content library of files in the placement phase. In the subsequent delivery phase, each receiver requests one of the library files, and the transmitters are responsible for delivering the requested files from their caches to the receivers. The objective is to design schemes for the placement and delivery phases to maximize the sum degrees of freedom (sum-DoF) which expresses the capacity of the interference network at the high signal-to-noise ratio regime. Our work mainly focuses on a commonly used uncoded placement strategy. We provide an information-theoretic bound on the sum-DoF for this placement strategy. We demonstrate by an example that the derived bound is tighter than the bounds existing in the literature for small cache sizes. We propose a novel delivery scheme with a higher achievable sum-DoF than those previously given in the literature. The results reveal that the reciprocal of sum-DoF decreases linearly as the transmitter cache size increases. Therefore, increasing cache sizes at transmitters translates to increasing the sum-DoF and, hence, the capacity of the interference networks.

We consider a class of wireless powered devices employing Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) to ensure reliable end-to-end communications over a two-state time-varying channel. A receiver, with no power source, relies on the energy transferred by a Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) enabled transmitter to \emph{receive} and \emph{decode} information. Under the two-state channel model, information is received at two different rates while it is only possible to harvest energy in one of the states. The receiver aims to decode its messages with minimum expected number of re-transmissions. Dynamic and continuous nature of the problem motivated us to use a novel Markovian framework to bypass the complexities plaguing the conventional approaches such as MDP. Using the theory of absorbing Markov chains, we show that there exists an optimal policy utilizing the incoming RF signal solely to harvest energy or to accumulate mutual information. Hence, we convert the original problem with continuous action and state space into an equivalent one with discrete state and action space. For independent and identically distributed channels, we prove the optimality of a simple-to-implement {\em harvest-first-store-later} type policy. However, for time-correlated channels, we demonstrate that statistical knowledge of the channel may significantly improve the performance over such policies.

This paper studies a generic model for cooperative cognitive radio networks where the secondary user is equipped with a finite relay queue as well as a finite battery queue. Our prime objective is to characterize the stable throughput region. Nevertheless, the complete characterization of the stable throughput region for such system is notoriously difficult, since the computation of the steady state distribution of the two-dimensional Markov Chain (MC) model for both finite queues is prohibitively complex. We first propose an algorithm to characterize the stable throughput region numerically, and show its sheer computational complexity for large queue lengths. To lend tractability and explore the nature of design parameters optimization at the cognitive node, we next focus on two simpler systems, namely, finite battery queue with infinite relay queue and finite relay queue with infinite battery queue (referred henceforth as dominant system $1$ and $2$, respectively). For each proposed dominant system, we investigate the maximum service rate of the cognitive node subject to stability conditions. Despite the complexity of the formulated optimization problems, due to their non-convexity, we exploit the problems' structure to transform them into linear programs. Thus, we are able to solve them efficiently using standard linear programming solvers. Our numerical results demonstrate that, in practical systems, finite battery and relay queues achieve the same level of benefits of a system with infinite queue sizes, when their sizes are sufficiently large. The use of existing network devices as relays has a potential to improve the overall network performance. In this work, we consider a two-hop wireless relay setting, where the channels between the source and relay nodes to the destination node are time varying. The relay nodes are able to overhear the transmissions of the source node which may have a weak connection to the destination, and they help the source node by forwarding its messages to the destination on its behalf, whenever this is needed. We develop a distributed scheme for relay selection and channel access that is suitable for time-varying channels, and prove that this scheme is throughput optimal. We obtain the achievable rate region of our proposed scheme analytically for a relay network with a single source and a single relay node. Meanwhile, for a more general network with more than one relay nodes, we perform Monte-Carlo simulations to obtain the achievable rate region. In both cases, we demonstrate that the achievable rate region attained with our distributed scheme is the same as the one attained with centralized optimal scheme.

Streaming video is becoming the predominant type of traffic over the Internet with reports forecasting the video content to account for 80% of all traffic by 2019. With significant investment on Internet backbone, the main bottleneck remains at the edge servers (e.g., WiFi access points, small cells, etc.). In this work, we propose and prove the optimality of a multiuser resource allocation mechanism operating at the edge server that minimizes the probability of stalling of video streams due to buffer under-flows. Our proposed policy utilizes Media Presentation Description (MPD) files of clients that are sent in compliant to Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) protocol to be cognizant of the deadlines of each of the media file to be displayed by the clients. Then, the policy schedules the users in the order of their deadlines. After establishing the optimality of this policy to minimize the stalling probability for a network with links associated with fixed loss rates, the utility of the algorithm is verified under realistic network conditions with detailed NS-3 simulations.

An energy harvesting (EH) transmitter communicating over a time-correlated wireless channel is considered. The transmitter is capable of sensing the current channel state, albeit at the cost of both energy and transmission time. The EH transmitter aims to maximize its long-term throughput by choosing one of the following actions: $i)$ defer its transmission to save energy for future use, $ii)$ transmit reliably at a low rate, $iii)$ transmit at a high rate, and $iv)$ sense the channel to reveal the channel state at a cost of energy and transmission time, and then decide to defer or to transmit. The problem is formulated as a partially observable Markov decision process with a belief on the channel state. The optimal policy is shown to exhibit a threshold behavior on the belief state, with battery-dependent threshold values. The optimal threshold values and performance are characterized numerically via the value iteration algorithm as well as a policy search algorithm that exploits the threshold structure of the optimal policy. This paper characterizes the performance of a generic $K$-tier cache-aided heterogeneous network (CHN), in which the base stations (BSs) across tiers differ in terms of their spatial densities, transmission powers, pathloss exponents, activity probabilities conditioned on the serving link and placement caching strategies. We consider that each user connects to the BS which maximizes its average received power and at the same time caches its file of interest. Modeling the locations of the BSs across different tiers as independent homogeneous Poisson Point processes (HPPPs), we derive closed-form expressions for the coverage probability and local delay experienced by a typical user in receiving each requested file. We show that our results for coverage probability and delay are consistent with those previously obtained in the literature for a single tier system.

This paper studies the decentralized coded caching for a Fog Radio Access Network (F-RAN), whereby two edge-nodes (ENs) connected to a cloud server via fronthaul links with limited capacity are serving the requests of $K_r$ users. We consider all ENs and users are equipped with caches. A decentralized content placement is proposed to independently store contents at each network node during the off-peak hours. After that, we design a coded delivery scheme in order to deliver the user demands during the peak-hours under the objective of minimizing the normalized delivery time (NDT), which refers to the worst case delivery latency. An information-theoretic lower bound on the minimum NDT is derived for arbitrary number of ENs and users. We evaluate numerically the performance of the decentralized scheme. Energy harvesting (EH) is a promising technology for realizing energy efficient wireless networks. In this paper, we utilize the ambient RF energy, particularly interference from neighboring transmissions, to replenish the batteries of the EH enabled nodes. However, RF energy harvesting imposes new challenges into the analysis of wireless networks. Our objective in this work is to investigate the performance of a slotted Aloha random access wireless network consisting of two types of nodes, namely Type I which has unlimited energy supply and Type II which is solely powered by an RF energy harvesting circuit. The transmissions of a Type I node are recycled by a Type II node to replenish its battery. We characterize an inner bound on the stable throughput region under half-duplex and full-duplex energy harvesting paradigms as well as for the finite capacity battery case. We present numerical results that validate our analytical results, and demonstrate their utility for the analysis of the exact system.

We consider the problem of resource allocation and control of multihop networks in which multiple source-destination pairs communicate confidential messages, to be kept confidential from the intermediate nodes. We pose the problem as that of network utility maximization, into which confidentiality is incorporated as an additional quality of service constraint. We develop a simple, and yet provably optimal dynamic control algorithm that combines flow control, routing and end-to-end secrecy-encoding. In order to achieve confidentiality, our scheme exploits multipath diversity and temporal diversity due to channel variability. Our end-to-end dynamic encoding scheme encodes confidential messages across multiple packets, to be combined at the ultimate destination for recovery. We first develop an optimal dynamic policy for the case in which the number of blocks across which secrecy encoding is performed is asymptotically large. Next, we consider encoding across a finite number of packets, which eliminates the possibility of achieving perfect secrecy. For this case, we develop a dynamic policy to choose the encoding rates for each message, based on the instantaneous channel state information, queue states and secrecy outage requirements. By numerical analysis, we observe that the proposed scheme approaches the optimal rates asymptotically with increasing block size. Finally, we address the consequences of practical implementation issues such as infrequent queue updates and de-centralized scheduling. It is well known that opportunistic scheduling algorithms are throughput optimal under full knowledge of channel and network conditions. However, these algorithms achieve a hypothetical achievable rate region which does not take into account the overhead associated with channel probing and feedback required to obtain the full channel state information at every slot. We adopt a channel probing model where $\beta$ fraction of time slot is consumed for acquiring the channel state information (CSI) of a single channel. In this work, we design a joint scheduling and channel probing algorithm named SDF by considering the overhead of obtaining the channel state information. We first analytically prove SDF algorithm can support $1+\epsilon$ fraction of of the full rate region achieved when all users are probed where $\epsilon$ depends on the expected number of users which are not probed. Then, for homogenous channel, we show that when the number of users in the network is greater than 3, $\epsilon > 0$, i.e., we guarantee to expand the rate region. In addition, for heterogenous channels, we prove the conditions under which SDF guarantees to increase the rate region. We also demonstrate numerically in a realistic simulation setting that this rate region can be achieved by probing only less than 50% of all channels in a CDMA based cellular network utilizing high data rate protocol under normal channel conditions., Comment: submitted

We consider the problem of resource allocation in a wireless cellular network, in which nodes have both open and private information to be transmitted to the base station over block fading uplink channels. We develop a cross-layer solution, based on hybrid ARQ transmission with incremental redundancy. We provide a scheme that combines power control, flow control, and scheduling in order to maximize a global utility function, subject to the stability of the data queues, an average power constraint, and a constraint on the privacy outage probability. Our scheme is based on the assumption that each node has an estimate of its uplink channel gain at each block, while only the distribution of the cross channel gains is available. We prove that our scheme achieves a utility, arbitrarily close to the maximum achievable utility given the available channel state information.

We investigate the network stability problem when two users are scheduled simultaneously. The key idea is to simultaneously transmit to more than one users experiencing different channel conditions by employing hierarchical modulation. For two-user scheduling problem, we develop a throughput-optimal algorithm which can stabilize the network whenever this is possible. In addition, we analytically prove that the proposed algorithm achieves larger achievable rate region compared to the conventional Max-Weight algorithm which employs uniform modulation and transmits a single user. We demonstrate the efficacy of the algorithm on a realistic simulation environment using the parameters of High Data Rate protocol in a Code Division Multiple Access system. We address a major flaw in the abovementioned paper, which proposes to calculate effective capacity of random channels by the use of central limit theorem. We analytically show that the authors are incorrect in finding the effective capacity by first taking the limit of cumulative random process rather than taking the limit of moment generating function of the same process. Energy consumption of a wireless sensor node mainly depends on the amount of time the node spends in each of the high power active (e.g., transmit, receive) and low power sleep modes. It has been well established that in order to prolong node's lifetime the duty-cycle of the node should be low. However, low power sleep modes usually have low current draw but high energy cost while switching to the active mode with a higher current draw. In this work, we investigate a MaxWeightlike opportunistic sleep-active scheduling algorithm that takes into account time- varying channel and traffic conditions. We show that our algorithm is energy optimal in the sense that the proposed ESS algorithm can achieve an energy consumption which is arbitrarily close to the global minimum solution. Simulation studies are provided to confirm the theoretical results.

We consider the problem of cross-layer resource allocation in time-varying cellular wireless networks, and incorporate information theoretic secrecy as a Quality of Service constraint. Specifically, each node in the network injects two types of traffic, private and open, at rates chosen in order to maximize a global utility function, subject to network stability and secrecy constraints. The secrecy constraint enforces an arbitrarily low mutual information leakage from the source to every node in the network, except for the sink node. We first obtain the achievable rate region for the problem for single and multi-user systems assuming that the nodes have full CSI of their neighbors. Then, we provide a joint flow control, scheduling and private encoding scheme, which does not rely on the knowledge of the prior distribution of the gain of any channel. We prove that our scheme achieves a utility, arbitrarily close to the maximum achievable utility. In this paper, we consider the standard discrete-time slotted ALOHA with a finite number of terminals with infinite size buffers. In our study, we jointly consider the stability of this system together with the physical layer security. We conduct our studies on both dominant and original systems, where in a dominant system each terminal always has a packet in its buffer unlike in the original system. For N = 2, we obtain the secrecy-stability regions for both dominant and original systems. Furthermore, we obtain the transmission probabilities, which optimize system throughput.
