Abstract

The adaptation of the human organism to hot environmental conditions as well as to heavy muscular work is known to produce a decrease in the sodium and chloride concentrations of sweat (Dill, Hall & Edwards, 1938, Conn & Johnston, 1944, Conn, Johnston & Louis, 1946, Ahlman, Eränkö, Karvonen & Leppänen, 1952 a). Moreover, it has been observed that the intake of water affects the chloride content of thermal sweat, the latter varying inversely with the supply of drinking water (Johnston, Pitts & Consolazio, 1944). Drinking water thus causes a dilution of sweat, which probably occurs independently of any effects on the rate of sweating, since it has been shown that drinking water either equal in amount to the sweat loss or in excess of it has no significant effect upon the rate of sweating (Ladell, 1945).The adaptive increase in the sweat electrolyte concentration has been ascribed to the mineralocorticoid

22. Fine Structure of Rat Carotid Body After 6-Methylprednisolone Treatment

Abstract

Adult albino rats were given a single intraperitoneal injection of 400 mg/kg of 6-methylprednisolone sypionate in oil suspension. They were killed one week after the injection, fixed by perfusion with 2.5 % glutaraldehyde in 0.1 M phosphate buffer and by subsequent immersion first in the same solution and then in 1 % osmium tetroxide, also in phosphate buffer.Methylprednisolone caused the appearance of numerous granular vesicles in some glomus cells of the carotid body. While there was a general tendency towards an increase in the number of granular vesicles per unit area of cell profile and towards a decrease in the mean size of the vesicles, the differences from normal were not statistically significant. Formation of parallel arrays of rough-surfaced cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum was the most conspicuous change due to methylprednisolone.Since similar methylprednisolone treatment causes a marked increase in the intensity of the catecholamine fluorescence in the cytoplasm of the glomus cells, but no corresponding increase in the number of granular vesicles was observed, it is proposed that the increased storage of catecholamines due to methylprednisolone is located in the endoplasmic reticulum of the glomus cells.

Abstract

Acetylcholinesterase and non-specific cholinesterase gave positive histochemical reactions in the nerve fibres of the adrenal medulla of the hamster. Acetylcholinesterase activity was also observed in the fine nervous network covering the whole medulla, while non-specific cholinesterase activity was limited to fewer fibres. Division of the splanchnic nerve did not essentially affect the non-specific cholinesterase reaction but abolished most of the acetylcholinesterase activity. However, some fibres both in the cortex and in the medulla retained their acetylcholinesterase activity after denervation.

24. THE EFFECT OF THE ACT OF COPULATION ON WATER DIURESIS IN THE RAT

Abstract

This study was undertaken in order to find out, whether the act of copulation affects water diuresis. No information on this subject was found in the literature. Only Van de Veldein his popular book »Die vollkommene Ehe« (1926) states that coitus, like other emotions, increases the urine flow. As far as other emotions are concerned, Rydin & Verney(1938), and O'Connor & Verney(1942) have shown on the contrary that in the dog emotional stress causes an antidiuresis due to the release of the antidiuretic hormone from the posterior pituitary.METHODSAlbino rats, 10 females and 10 males, were used. The sexual cycle of the female rats was examined by means of vaginal smears. Females showing cornified epithelial cells only or some nucleated and a majority of cornified epithelial cells were used for the experiment. Abstract

Newborn rats were daily injected with 0.2 mg hydrocortisone acetate for seven days. They were killed 1, 7 or 21 days after the last injection, together with untreated controls. Hydrocortisone caused a great increase in the number of the small, intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells and the appearance of similar small cells with intense immunohistochemical reactions for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) and phenylethanolamine (noradrenaline) N-methyltransferase (PNMT) in the superior cervical ganglion. At the same time, the adrenaline content and the PNMT activity of the ganglion greatly increased, while no significant changes were observed in the dopamine or noradrenaline content or TH or DBH activity. All these changes essentially disappeared after a recovery period of seven or 21 days. It is concluded that hydrocortisone caused a temporary increase in the number of SIF cells by causing a synthesis of TH, DBH and PNMT in previously existing small, non-fluorescent cells, which start to synthesize and store adrenaline, thus becoming intensely fluorescent SIF cells. These SIF cells are different from the normal SIF cells of the same ganglion, most of which appear at a later stage of postnatal development when response to hydrocortisone is lost, which contain TH but neither DBH nor PNMT, and which permanently remain in the ganglion.
