Abstract: Although copper (Cu) is an essential micronutrient for all living organisms, it can be toxic at low concentrations. Its beneficial effects are therefore only observed for a narrow range of concentrations. Anthropogenic activities such as fungicide spraying and mining have resulted in the Cu contamination of environmental compartments (soil, water and sediment) at levels sometimes exceeding the toxicity threshold. This review focuses on the bioremediation of copper-contaminated soils. The mechanisms by which microorganisms, and in particular bacteria, can mobilize or immobilize Cu in soils are described and the corresponding bioremediation strategies—of varying levels of maturity—are addressed: (i) bioleaching as a process for the ex situ recovery of Cu from Cu-bearing solids, (ii) bioimmobilization to limit the in situ leaching of Cu into groundwater and (iii) bioaugmentation-assisted phytoextraction as an innovative process for in situ enhancement of Cu removal from soil. For each application, the specific conditions required to achieve the desired effect and the practical methods for control of the microbial processes were specified.

Abstract: International audience; The biogeography of neotropical fungi remains poorly understood. Here, we reconstruct the origins and diversification of neotropical lineages in one of the largest clades of ectomycorrhizal fungi in the globally widespread family Russulaceae. We inferred a supertree of 3285 operational taxonomic units, representing worldwide internal transcribed spacer sequences. We reconstructed biogeographic history and diversification and identified lineages in the Neotropics and adjacent Patagonia. The ectomycorrhizal Russulaceae have a tropical African origin. The oldest lineages in tropical South America, most with African sister groups, date to the mid-Eocene, possibly coinciding with a boreotropical migration corridor. There were several transatlantic dispersal events from Africa more recently. Andean and Central American lineages mostly have northtemperate origins and are associated with North Andean uplift and the general north-south biotic interchange across the Panama isthmus, respectively. Patagonian lineages have Australasian affinities. Diversification rates in tropical South America and other tropical areas are lower than in temperate areas. Neotropical Russulaceae have multiple biogeographic origins since the mid-Eocene involving dispersal and co-migration. Discontinuous distributions of host plants may explain low diversification rates of tropical lowland ectomycorrhizal fungi. Deeply diverging neotropical fungal lineages need to be better documented.

Abstract: Wetlands are a very important universal heritage; in the Moroccan High Atlas mountains the geomorphology and the slopes evolution determine the existence of the numerous projecting ledges of pozzines on plateaus and oozing. This is particularly the case in Oukaimeden site located at 75 km south of Marrakesh. These wet grasslands have been developed on small surface areas supported by soils water accumulation; and close to the sources and on some banks constitute wetlands of high floristic richness, which makes them very coveted pastures by local populations. These wet pastures are highly sensitive to climatic factors. Recent climatic changes, the anthropic and pastoral pressures and the global environmental changes, affect these zones at the level of their structure (areas, soil characteristicsaEuro broken vertical bar) and their ecological functions. In the Oukaimeden plateau, the use of aerial photography made it possible to carry out a detailed follow up of the hydraulic adjustments (dam construction in the 1970s) as well as the setting up of new adjustments (tracks, paths, drain channel) on the structure and functioning of these grasslands.

Abstract: The aim of this study is to use the FAO-56 single and dual crop coefficient approaches to estimate actual evapotranspiration (ETa) over irrigated citrus orchard under drip and flood irrigations in Marrakech, Morocco. The results showed that, by using crop coefficients suggested by FAO-56 paper, the performance of both approaches was poor for two irrigation treatments. The Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) between measured and simulated ETa values over irrigated citrus under drip irrigation was about 1.43 and 1.27 mm/day for the single and dual approaches respectively, while the corresponding statistics for the citrus irrigated by flooding technique was 1.87 and 2.48 mm/day. After the determination of the appropriate values of the crop coefficient (Kc) based on eddy covariance measurements of ETa, the performance of both approaches greatly improved. The obtained values of crop coefficient were below than the FAO-56 values by about 20%. The low Kc values obtained reflect the practicing of drip irrigation for one field and the low value of cover fraction for the other field. Additionally, the efficiency of the irrigation practices was investigated by comparing the measured Kc for two fields. The results showed that an important amount of water was lost by direct soil evaporation on citrus orchard irrigated by flooding technique. Abstract: This study was performed to test three methods based on the FAO-56 ‘‘dual'' crop coefficient approach to estimate actual evapotranspiration (AET) for winter wheat under different irrigation treatments in the semi-arid region of Tensift Al Haouz, Marrakech (center of Morocco). The three methods differ in the calculation of the basal crop coefficient (Kcb) and the fraction of soil surface covered by vegetation ( fc). The first approach strictly follows the FAO-56 procedure, with Kcb given in the FAO-56 tables and fc calculated from Kcb (No- Calibration method). The second method uses local Kcb and fc values estimated from field measurements (Local-Calibration method) and the last approach uses a remotely-sensed vegetation index to estimate Kcb and fc (NDVI-Calibration method). The analysis was performed on three fields using actual (AET) measured by Eddy Correlation systems. It was shown that the Local-Calibration approach gave best results. Accurate estimates of Kcb and fc were necessary for FAO-56 ‘‘dual'' crop coefficient application. The locally derived Kcb for winter wheat taken at initial, mid-season, and maturity crop growth were 0.15, 0.90 and 0.23, respectively. The Kcb value at the mid-season stage was found to be considerably less than that suggested by the FAO-56. Similarity between the seasonal pattern of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and Kcb showed potential for modelling NDVI into a Kcb. The obtained relationships between Kcb and NDVI, and between fc and NDVI could be easily incorporated within the FAO-56 ‘‘dual'' crop coefficient model and, thereby, provide a means to apply remotely sensed observation for real-time wheat irrigation scheduling. The results obtained were very acceptable especially when the soil evaporation is negligible. Therefore, the Kcb–NDVI relationship employed in the FAO-56 ‘‘dual'' crop coefficient model holds great potential for estimating crop water requirements on an operational basis and consumption at a regional scale.

Abstract: Les espaces forestiers montagnards méditerranéens sont souvent fortement dégradés. La cause principale est la surexploitation des ressources. Au cours de l'histoire, la rareté des ressources a probablement incité les hommes à mettre en place des formes de contrôle coutumières (ou « traditionnelles ») des espaces forestiers et pastoraux. Ces régimes perdurent dans le Haut Atlas marocain sous le nom d'agdal, terme qui désigne un territoire sylvopastoral collectif soumis à des mises en défens temporaires. Ce travail vise à évaluer l'impact de cette gestion coutumière sur les dynamiques des formations boisées dans une zone de montagne, la vallée des Ait Bouguemez, à travers une analyse diachronique basée sur la comparaison de documents anciens (photographies aériennes de 1964) avec des documents récents (image satellitaire Spot 5 à très haute résolution). La méthodologie adoptée repose sur la photointerprétation visuelle des documents précités en se basant sur une charte commune d'estimation du recouvrement arboré. Deux cartes de recouvrement ont été produites pour 1964 et 2002, dont le croisement a permis d'obtenir une carte de la dynamique des peuplements. Les résultats obtenus soulignent de fortes disparités dans les dynamiques forestières selon le statut agdal ou non-agdal de la forêt. La surface forestière a diminué de 21 % en 38 ans, et le recouvrement arboré moyen sur la zone forestière chute globalement de 20 % à 18 % pendant cette période. On observe un maintien du couvert boisé en zone agdal et sa forte dégradation hors agdal dans un contexte de forte croissance démographique.

Abstract: To monitor seasonal water consumption of agricultural fields at large scale, spatially averaged surface fluxes of sensible heat (H) and latent heat (LvE) are required. The scintillation method is shown to be a promising device for obtaining the area-averaged sensible heat fluxes, on a scale of up to 10 km. These fluxes, when combined with a simple available energy model, can be used to derive area-averaged latent heat fluxes. For this purpose, a Large Aperture Scintillometer (LAS) was operated continuously for more than one year over a tall and sparse irrigated oliveyard located in south-central Marrakesh (Morocco). Due to the flood irrigation method used in the site, which induces irregular pattern of soil moisture both in space and time, the comparison between scintillometer-based estimates of daily sensible heat flux (H-LAS) and those measured by the classical eddy covariance (EC) method (H-EC) showed a large scatter during the irrigation events, while a good correspondence was found during homogenous conditions (dry conditions and days following the rain events). We found, that combining a simple available energy model and the LAS measurements, the latent heat can be reliably predicted at large scale in spite of the large scatter (R-2 = 0.72 and RMSE = 18.25 W m(-2)) that is obtained when comparing the LAS against the EC. This scatter is explained by different factors: the difference in terms of the source areas of the LAS and EC, the closure failure of the energy balance of the EC, and the error in available energy estimates. Additionally, the irrigation efficiency was investigated by comparing measured seasonal evapotranspiration values to those recommended by the FAO. It was found that the visual observation of the physical conditions of the plant is not sufficient to efficiently manage the irrigation, a large quantity of water is lost (approximate to 37% of total irrigation). Consequently, the LAS can be considered as a potentially useful tool to monitor the water consumption in complex conditions.

Abstract: International audience; Earth Observing Systems designed to provide both high spatial resolution (10 m) and high capacity of time revisit (a few days) offer strong opportunities for the management of agricultural water resources. The FORMOSAT-2 satellite is the first and only satellite with the ability to provide daily high-resolution images over a particular area with constant viewing angles. As part of the SudMed project, one of the first time series of FORMOSAT-2 images has been acquired over the semi-arid Tensift-Marrakech plain. Along with these acquisitions, an experimental data set has been collected to monitor land-cover/land-use, soil characteristics, vegetation dynamics and surface fluxes. This paper presents a first analysis of the potential of these data for agrometerological study of semi-arid areas

Abstract: The rationale of this research is to investigate approaches based on modelling and remote sensing data for estimating the spatial distribution of yield and irrigation of wheat in semi-arid areas. The specific objective is to compare the performances of two approaches to test the STICS crop model using remotely sensed estimates of Leaf Area Index (LAI). An experimental study of phenology, yield and water balance of an irrigated wheat was made in the Marrakech-Haouz plain during year 2003. Experimental data allowed to run STICS using two approaches: 1) calibration of the parameters that control the time course of LAI ; 2) driving from LAI time series interpolated with a simple model. The results show the accuracy of STICS to simulate actual evapotranspiration and yield for both approaches. Finally, the two approaches were compared using remotely sensed estimates of LAI upon four scenarios of satellite time revisit frequency. The simulations we obtained always show acceptable results. However, differences appear between the variables, between the approaches and between the frequencies.

Abstract: International audience; The lability of trace metals (TM) in the soil is time-dependent, and temporal changes in metals' state are known as "soil aging." However, there is no study assessing a long-term change in the environmental availability of metals and the effects of soil aging on the dynamics of bioaccumulation of TM in terrestrial wild mammals. This study aims to estimate whether and how soil aging affects the transfers of TM in terrestrial food webs. Based on long-term monitoring from 2006 to 2019 in metal-contaminated sites, we compared the temporal change in the availability of TM in the soil to temporal trends of TMs in small mammals' tissues.

Abstract: International audience; Tropical rainforests have been thought to have low prevalence and diversity of ectomycorrhizal symbioses. However, to date, tropical regions have been poorly sampled for ectomycorrhizal fungi. Here, we investigated ectomycorrhizal fungal community diversity and the role of host plants in shaping this diversity in three main ultramafic rainforests in New Caledonia, an archipelago renowned for its exceptional plant diversity and recognized as a biodiversity hotspot. Sampling of ectomycorrhizal root tips and fruit bodies in Nothofagus aequilateralis-dominated, Arillastrum gummiferum-dominated and mixed rainforests showed high fungal diversity with, in total, 28 lineages and 311 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), of which 95% might be endemic. We also found that host preference and host density influenced ectomycorrhizal community composition and contributed to the high fungal diversity of New Caledonian rainforests. Finally, the/cortinarius lineage dominated the below- and above-ground communities, which suggests that this lineage plays a central role in ultramafic ecosystems functioning.

Abstract: International audience; Conservation agriculture (CA) is one strategy with which both sustainability and productivity can be achieved by improving soil health. However, linkages between practices, soil health and cropping system performance remain poorly disentangled. We assessed the relationships between soil health and cropping system performance for three maize-based cropping systems in New Caledonia. Two CA systems, one with direct seeding into a mixed species dead mulch (CA-DM) and one into a stylo living mulch (CA-LM), were compared to a conventional tillage (CT) system. CA vs. CT experiment started in 2011, whereas the differentiation between CA-DM and CA-LM was initiated in 2017 only. In 2018, soil health was evaluated using Biofunctool (R), a set of ten in-field tools that assess soil carbon transformation, structure maintenance and nutrient cycling functions. The performance of the three cropping systems were assessed by monitoring weeds, maize growth and yield components. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to disentangle the links between agricultural management, soil health and cropping system performance. Soil structure maintenance and nutrient cycling functions were higher under CA-DM and CA-LM than under CT, and carbon transformation function was higher under CA-DM than under CT and CA-LM. Overall, the soil health index (SHI) was 1.3-fold higher under CA systems than under CT. Cropping system management had both direct and indirect effects on soil functioning and crop productivity leading to a 1.3-fold higher yield under CA than under CT. The direct and indirect effects of CA systems on soil health had positive impacts on ecosystem services (i.e., productivity, weed regulation and soil ecosystem services). Such integrative approaches that account for the relationships and possible trade-offs between cropping system components enable a better understanding of the effects and the performance of practices, and support adaptive agricultural management.

Or, paradoxalement, les potentialités agronomiques des sols urbains ou péri-urbains, ainsi que leurs propriétés physico-chimiques, sont encore largement inconnues. La localisation des jardins suscite des interrogations en termes de risques sanitaires puisque nombre d’entre eux sont implantés sur des délaissés urbains, des friches industrielles ou le long d’infrastructures routières ou ferroviaires. Abstract: Antibioresistance may develop in different contexts (e.g. hospitals, wastewater treatment plants, animal farming) through various processes. Because municipal landfills may have received medication waste coming from citizens but also from hospitals, they may represent a source of antibioresistance disseminating in the natural environment. Together with the fate of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors, we studied the fate of antibioresistance from a former municipal landfill located in Nantes, France. Both municipal and hospital waste were deposited in this landfill between 1969 and 1987. The total volume of waste is around 2 million cubic meters.We sampled leachates from the landfill, as well as groundwater upstream and downstream the landfill. Extraction (SPE or liquid/liquid) on frozen or fresh samples allowed quantifying 30 pharmaceutical molecules and 8 other emerging by LC/MSMS, UPLC/MSMS or GC/MSMS. The abundance of total cultivable communities was determined by counting on non-selective medium. Culture media used in clinical microbiology (drigalski / ceftazidime, Msuper CARBA and ESBL) were used to determine the proportion of the bacterial community that is resistant to antibiotics. Eventually, the diversity of the total communities was studied by PCR-TTGE and by 16S metabarcoding (MiSeq Illumina).Over of the whole substances sought, 11 pharmaceutical molecules (not antibiotics), have been quantified in the leachates and 2 endocrine disruptors (bisphenol A and triclosan). Most substances were also recovered in groundwater immediately downstream the site (including carbamazepine) at concentrations ranging between 0.1 µg/L and 10 µg/L. The number of detected substances was lower a few hundred meters far from the landfill. More especially bisphenol A and diclofenac show lower concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 1 µg/L and about 0.1 µg/L respectively). Similar observations were shown for antibioresistance. The bacteria from leachates show a more important antibioresistance than in the other groundwater samples. The transfer of antibioresistant bacteria seems limited downstream the landfill, with nevertheless higher content at the immediate downstream. The natural attenuation may be explained by several processes, some being the same as for metals and PAH.

16. Do diversity of plants, soil fungi and bacteria influence aggregate stability on ultramafic Ferralsols? A metagenomic approach in a tropical hotspot of biodiversity

Abstract: International audience; Aims: Understanding how soil aggregate stability (MWD) is influenced by microbial diversity and abundance can be crucial for ecological restoration in severely disturbed areas. We investigated the relationships between plant and soil microbial diversity and MWD of an ultramafic Ferralsol along a vegetational succession gradient in New Caledonia, where wildfires and extensive nickel mining have degraded the landscape. Methods: Five plant communities were studied. For each one, MWD, soil physicochemical parameters (e.g. soil organic carbon (SOC)), plant root traits and fungal abundance were measured. The diversity and structure of plant and microbial communities were respectively assessed via botanical inventories and a metagenomic approach. A generalized linear model (GLM) was used to assess the influence of diversity indexes on MWD. Constrained ordinations (CCA) were performed to assess the influence of communities' structures on MWD. Results GLM highlighted the linkage between SOC and MWD but did not identify any significant influence of diversity indexes on MWD. CCA revealed a significant influence of communities' structures, especially the abundance of saprotrophic fungi, on MWD. Conclusions: We showed that the structure, but not species richness and diversity of plants, soil fungi and bacteria influence aggregate stability on Ferralsols.

Abstract: International audience; Aim: To understand how variations in precipitation and topographic wetness influence tree community assembly at both regional and landscape scales in tropical forests. Location: New Caledonia (SW Pacific). Methods: We sampled 40 tree communities in 0.04-ha plots laid along topographic gradients within two landscapes with contrasting precipitation. Within a dry (2,500 mm/year) landscape we used the Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) to sample communities in topographic position with low (e.g., ridges) and high (e.g., valleys) water accumulation. For each sampled species, we measured five functional traits involved in drought resistance and resource acquisition (wood density, leaf area, leaf specific area, leaf dry matter content, and leaf thickness). We first examined trait covariation across species. We then analysed how the functional composition of communities varied between landscapes (according to precipitation) and within landscapes (according to TWI), using trait-based statistics and null models. Results We identified two ecological trade-offs driving trait variation across species: (i) one opposing high hydraulic efficiency to drought resistance, related to a wood economic spectrum; and (ii) the other opposing resource acquisition to resource conservation, related to a leaf economic spectrum. Across landscapes, species with drought resistance strategies were favoured at lower precipitation. Within landscapes, drought resistant species were selected under low TWI in the dry landscape, while low TWI increased the abundance of species with conservative strategies in the wet landscape. Conclusions: Precipitation and topography jointly shape the functional composition of tree communities. At low precipitation, hydric constraints prevailed on ridges and upslopes by filtering drought resistant strategies along the wood economic spectrum. Contrastingly, higher precipitation relaxed the hydric constraints and resource availability became a primary driver of changing strategies along the leaf economic spectrum. Thus, the landscape scale influence of topography on processes driving community assembly and functional composition critically depends on the regional climatic context.

Abstract: International audience; Accumulation of heavy metals in soils poses a potential risk to plant production, which is related to availability of the metals in soil. The phytoavailability of metals is usually evaluated using extracting solutions such as salts, acids or chelates. The purpose of this study was to identify the most significant soil parameters that can be used to predict the concentrations of acetic and citric acid-extractable cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in contaminated woody habitat topsoils. Multiple linear regression models were established using two analysis strategies and three sets of variables based on a dataset of 260 soil samples. The performance of these models was evaluated using statistical parameters. Cation exchange capacity, CaCO3, organic matter, assimilated P, free Al oxide, sand and the total metal concentrations appeared to be the main soil parameters governing the solubility of Cd, Pb and Zn in acetic and citric acid solutions. The results strongly suggest that the metal solubility in extracting solutions is extractable concentration-dependent since models were overall improved by incorporating a change point. This change point detection method was a powerful tool for predicting extractable Cd, Pb and Zn. Suitable predictions of extractable Cd, Pb and Zn concentrations were obtained, with correlation coefficient (adjusted r) ranging from 0.80 to 0.99, given the high complexity of the woody habitat soils studied. Therefore, the predictive models can constitute a decision-making support tool for managing phytoremediation of contaminated soils, making recommendations to control the potential bioavailability of metals. The relationships between acetic and/or citric acid-extractable concentrations and the concentrations of metals into the aboveground parts of plants need to be predicted, in order to make their temporal monitoring easier.

We aimed at understanding the role of soil physical and chemical components, vegetation and fungal biomass influencing the aggregate stability of a Ferralsol along a successional gradient of vegetation in New Caledonia.Methods: Five plant communities, ranging from sedge dominated ecosystems to well-established mixed rainforest were studied. For each community, MWD, soil texture, soil organic carbon (SOC), iron and aluminium sesquioxides, root length density (RLD), specific root length (SRL), root mass density (RMD) and fungal biomass were measured.Results:The best prediction of MWD combined abiotic and biotic factors. Along the gradient, Fe increased MWD, while root traits, fungal abundance and SOC modified MWD. From the sedge-dominated community to Arillastrum forest, RMD and SOC increased MWD, while between Nothofagus and mixed rainforest, it was likely that floristic composition and fungal communities influenced MWD.Conclusion : Plant community, the intrinsic nature of Ferralsol and fungal abundance all modified MWD. However, the specific effect of microbial communities should be addressed through a metagenomics approach to elucidate microbial interactions with plant communities.

Abstract: In many tropical regions, such as New Caledonia, soil erosion from anthropogenic activities and subsequent ecological restoration are major issues that require detailed soil and vegetation data for the production of management plans. To determine if some plant species are more useful for stabilizing soil aggregates and thus reducing erodibility, we examined three species endemic to New Caledonia, and measured how root traits and associated mycorrhizas and fungi influenced Ferralsol aggregate stability (MWD). The three species are hosts to different types of mycorrhizas and were: (i) the sedge Costularia arundinacea (Sol. Ex Vahl) Kük., an AMF (arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi) host, (ii) the shrub Tristaniopsis glauca Brongn. & Gris and (iii) the tree Arillastrum gummiferum (Pancher ex Brongn. & Gris) Baill., both of the latter are ectomycorrhizal fungi (ECM) hosts. Fungal abundance, aggregate stability, soil organic carbon (SOC), iron (Fe) and aluminium (Al) sesquioxides were measured in the soil beneath 20 individuals for each species, as well as in 20 control samples of bare soil. Root functional traits including root mass density (RMD), root length density (RLD) and percentage of fine roots were measured on all individuals. Results showed that plant species can significantly influence soil aggregate stability. MWD was greater in soil beneath Costularia characterized by high RMD, RLD, percentage of fine roots and fungal abundance, while MWD in the rhizosphere of Tristaniopsis and Arillastrum was similar to that of bare soil. Fe and Al were very high in all soil samples and are suspected of masking the influence of roots, fungi and SOC on MWD at the scale of isolated ECM-hosts. Therefore, MWD alone would not be a relevant predictor of restoration on such soil and further investigations should be carried out to identify a set of predictors useful for indicating the restoration of degraded soils on ultramafic substrates.

Abstract: International audience; Myrtle rust, caused by the fungus Austropuccinia psidii, infects a wide range of host species within the Myrtaceae family worldwide. Since its first report in 2013 from New Caledonia, the extent of the host range, geographical distribution and genetic diversity of A. psidii in this territory have been unknown. This study reports 67 new host species distributed in 13 different Myrtaceae genera, including five new genera. The pathogen was found in various types of plant communities, where Myrtaceae species are the dominant or codominant species, as well as in several nurseries. It is now considered a significant threat to the biodiversity of ecosystems and the Myrtaceae-related economy. A 3-year disease monitoring trial with 35 cultivated Myrtaceae species showed variations in disease severity at the species and individual scales. This suggests that some level of genetic resistance to myrtle rust may possibly exist among the endemic Myrtaceae of New Caledonia. A population genetic investigation revealed that only one single genotype of A. psidii occurs across its entire host range in New Caledonia. Therefore, it is essential to carry out population genetic surveillance to identify the appearance of mutations or the introduction of potentially more virulent genotypes of A. psidii. The outcomes from this study will assist with the ongoing management of the disease in New Caledonia.

Abstract: International audience; Metallurgical activities can generate a huge amount of partially vitrified waste products which are either landfilled or recycled. Lead Blast Furnace (LBF) slags are often disposed of in the vicinity of metallurgical plants, and are prone to weathering, releasing potentially toxic chemical components into the local environment. To simulate natural weathering in a slag heap, bioweathering of these LBF slags was studied in the presence of a pure heterotrophic bacterial strain (Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and in a semi-flow through reactor with intermittent leachate renewal. The evolution of water chemistry, slag composition and texture were monitored during the experiments. The cumulative bulk release of dissolved Fe, Si, Ca and Mg doubled in the presence of bacteria, probably due to the release of soluble complexing organic molecules (e.g. siderophores). In addition, bacterial biomass served as the bioadsorbent for Pb, Fe and Zn as 70-80% of Pb and Fe, 40-60% of Zn released are attached to and immobilized by the bacterial biomass.

Abstract: International audience; Siderophores are chelators with a high selectivity for Fe(III) and a good affinity for divalent metals, including Cd(II) and Ni(II). Inoculation with siderophore-producing bacteria (SPB) has thus been proposed as an alternative to chelator supply in phytoremediation. Accurate assessments of the potential of this association require a dissection of the interaction of siderophores with metals at the soil–root interface. This study focuses on pyoverdine (Pvd), the main siderophore produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We first assessed the ability of Pvd to coordinate Ni(II). The stability constant of Pvd–Ni(II) (log K L′Ni = 10.9) was found to be higher than that of Pvd–Cd(II) (log K L′Cd = 8.2). We then investigated the effect of a direct supply of Pvd on the mobilization, speciation, and phytoavailability of Cd and Ni in hydroponics. When supplied at a concentration of 50 μM, Pvd selectively promoted Ni mobilization from smectite. It decreased plant Ni and Cd contents and the free ionic fractions of these two metals, consistent with the free ion activity model. Pvd had a more pronounced effect for Ni than for Cd, as predicted from its coordination properties. Inoculation with P. aeruginosa had a similar effect on Ni phytoavailability to the direct supply of Pvd.

Abstract: International audience; Enhanced metal phytoextraction by the use of siderophore-producing bacteria (SPB) has received a lot of attention in the past decade. Bacterial siderophores are able to bind a wide range of metals other than iron and thus should enhance their phytoavailability in contaminated matrices. However, the impact of bacterial siderophores in the soil-plant transfer of metals is not yet fully elucidated, as underlined by the opposing results reported in the literature regarding the efficiency of coupling phytoextraction with bioaugmentation by SPB. The present study focuses on one bacterial siderophore, the pyoverdine (Pvd), produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The coordination properties of Pvd towards Cd(II) and Cu(II) were determined and the effect of Pvd supply was assessed on (i) the mobility (CaCl2 extractions), (ii) the phytoavailability (DGT measurements) and (iii) the phytoextraction of Cd and Cu, in a calcareous soil. The stability constant of Pvd-Cu (K-LCu = 10(20.1)) was found much higher than that of Pvd-Cd (K-Lcd = 10(8.2)). The major finding was the agreement observed between Pvd coordination properties and Pvd impact on metals phytoextraction. Pyoverdine, supplied at 250 mu mol kg(-1) soil, enhanced the mobility, the phytoavailability and the phytoextraction of Cu while the fate of Cd was not affected. All these results were compared to those reported for chelate-assisted phytoextraction. Their relevance in using SPB for phytoremediation is discussed.

Abstract: In many tropical regions, soil erosion from anthropogenic activities and subsequent ecological restoration are major issues. Revegetation would be an efficient way to mitigate soil degradation. Some plant and mycorrhizal species are more useful than others for stabilizing soil aggregates and thus reducing erodibility. However, the utility of inoculating plants with mycorrhizas in tropical regions is not clear with regard to the effects on soil aggregate stability. We investigated how plant inoculation with arbuscular (AMF) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi could improve aggregate stability of ultramafic Ferralsols in New Caledonia. We performed inoculations with local AMF and ECM on three endemic plant species grown in a glasshouse: the sedge Costularia arundinacea (Sol. Ex Vahl) Kuk., an AMF host, the shrub Tristaniopsis glauca Brongn. & Gris and the tree Arillastrum gummiferum (Pancher ex Brongn. & Gris) Baill., the latter species are both ECM hosts. We carried out three treatments for each plant species growing in an ultramafic topsoil, (i) control soil with no plants, (ii) non-inoculated plants and (iii) inoculated plants. Inoculation of C. arundinacea was carried out by adding to the topsoil a suspension of mixed AMF spores. T. glauca and A. gummiferum were inoculated with the ECM fungus Pisolithus microcarpus. After 9–10 months, aggregate stability, soil organic carbon, above- and below-ground dry biomass and root traits were measured. Results showed that on ultramafic topsoil, AMF and ECM inoculations significantly increased plant growth, modified roots (especially root length density) and consequently enhanced aggregate stability. Out of the non-inoculated plant species, C. arundinacea had the greatest positive effect on aggregate stability. The association of T. glauca and P. microcarpus was also found to significantly increase aggregate stability. Thus, the inoculation of native plant species with carefully selected mycorrhizal fungi could be an efficient technique to aid in the revegetation of bare slopes.

Abstract: International audience; A 70 day pot experiment was conducted for the cleaning-up of a PCBs-contaminated soil (104 mg kg(-1) soil DW) using bioaugmentation with Burkholderia xenovorans LB400 (LB400) assisted or not by the use of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea). The total cultivable bacteria of the soil were higher with the presence of plants. Real-time PCR showed that LB400 (targeting 16S-23S rRNA ITS) survived with abundance related to total bacteria (targeting 16S rRNA) being higher with fescue (up to a factor of three). Bioaugmentation had a positive effect on fescue biomass and more specifically on roots (by a factor of three). PCB dissipation (sum of congeners 28, 52, 101, 118, 153, 180) averaged 13 % (bioaugmented-planted) up to 32 % (non bioaugmented-planted), without any significant difference between treatments. Basically our results demonstrated that indigenous bacteria were able to dissipate PCBs (26.2 % dissipation). PCB dissipation was not related to the abundance of LB400 or to the total bacterial counts. Bioaugmentation or fescue altered the structure of the bacterial community of the soil, not the combination of both. Principal component analysis showed that bioaugmentation tended to improve the control of the process (lower variability in PCB dissipation). Opposite to that bioaugmentation increased the variability of the structure of the bacterial community.

Abstract: Sludge from a sewage treatment plant dealing with the effluent produced during the processing of crude vegetable oil (Lesieur-Cristal, Morocco) was composted in two mixtures (M1 and M2) with household waste obtained from landfill. The different physico-chemical characteristics of the final composts after 5 months of composting were, for M1 and M2, respectively: pH: 8.5 and 7.08; C/N: 10 and 16; proportion of decomposition: 78% and 55%, NH 4 + / NO 3 - : 0.78 and 1.02. Monitoring the levels of lipid and total polyphenols showed a reduction of 81% and 72% for lipids and of 75% and 76% for polyphenols in M1 and M2, respectively. These reductions were paralleled by a rise in the humic acid content to reach 22 and 36 mg/g, respectively. Overall, these results were confirmed by the FTIR spectroscopy study of the two mixtures. For M1, the FTIR spectra taken at different stages showed that during composting, biodegradation of the aliphatic compounds occurred as the proportion of aromatic structures increased. The transformations observed qualitatively were then confirmed quantitatively by the changes occurring in the various absorption ratios during composting. Mixture M2, however, presented strong absorbance of aliphatic compounds. These results were statistically confirmed by correlation tests and principal components analysis, which confirmed the maturity of the two composts, M1 having matured more than M2.

Materials and methods A rhizobox experiment was conducted with poplars, where the plant stem cuttings were grown in contaminated technosols for 2 months under glasshouse conditions. After plant growth, rhizosphere and bulk soil porewater (SPW) were sampled together. SPW properties such as pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total dissolved concentrations of Zn, Pb and Cd were determined. The concentrations of Zn, Pb and Cd in plant organs were also determined. Results and discussion Rhizosphere SPWpH increased for all studied soils by 0.3 to 0.6 units compared to bulk soils. A significant increase was also observed for DOC concentrationsregardless of the soil type or total metal concentrations, which might be attributed to the plant root activity. For all studied soils, the rhizosphere SPW metal concentrations decreased significantly after plant growth compared to bulk soils which might be attributed to the increase in pH and effects ofroot exudates. Zn, Pb and Cd accumulated in plant organs and the higher metal concentrations were found in plant roots compared to plant shoots.Conclusions The restricted transfer of the studied metals to the plant shoots confirms the potential role of this species in the immobilization of these metals. Thus, P. euramericana Dorskamp can be used for phytostabilization of technosols.

Abstract: In the first part of this work, the shoot growth module and grain yield of the STICS crop model were calibrated and validated by using field data which was collected from irrigated winter wheat fields in the Haouz plain near Marrakech. The calibration was performed on the thermal units between the four phenological stages that control the dynamics of leaf area index and the thermal unit between emergence and the beginning of grain filling. The plant phenology was calibrated for three fields monitored during the 2002/03 season. Evaluation of the grain yields and the temporal evolution of leaf area index were done for six validation fields during 2003/04. The results showed the significant accuracy of the model in simulating these variables, and also indicated that the plants mainly suffered from lack of nitrogen. The results in the second part show the potential of crop modeling to schedule irrigation water, on the assumption that the plants were growing under optimal conditions of fertilization. In this case, the model was used to manage the time of irrigation according to a threshold for water deficit. Various simulations displayed logical trends in the relationship between the grain yield and both the amount and timing of irrigation water. These results were finally compared with those obtained from real irrigation practices. For the particular climate of 2003/04, the comparison showed that 70 mm and 40 mm of water could be saved in case of early and late sowing, respectively.

Abstract: International audience; This study aimed at assessing the effect of nitrogen addition under two forms, nitrate and ammonium, on the stabilization of Zn, Pb, and Cd by Populus euramericana Dorskamp grown in contaminated soils for 35 days under controlled conditions. Temporal changes in the soil pore water (SPW) were monitored for pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total dissolved concentrations of metals in the soils rhizosphere. Rhizospheric SPW pH decreased gradually with NH4 + addition and increased with NO3 − addition up to one unit, while it slightly decreased initially then increased for the untreated control soil DOC increased with time up to six times, the highest increase occurring with NH4 + fertilization. An increase in the metal concentrations in the rhizospheric SPW was observed for NH4 + addition associated with the lowest rhizospheric SPW pH, whereas the opposite was observed for the control soil and NO3 − fertilization. Fertilization did not affect plant shoots or roots biomass development compared to the untreated control (without N addition). Metals were mostly accumulated in the rhizosphere and N fertilization increased the accumulation for Zn and Pb while Cd accumulation was enhanced for NH4 + addition. Collectively, our results suggest metal stabilization by P. euramericana Dorskamp rhizosphere with nitrogen fertilization and are potential for phytostabilization of contaminated technosol.

Abstract: The use of plants and microorganisms to mitigate sediment contaminated by copper was studied in microcosms that mimic the functioning of a stormwater basin (SWB) connected to vineyard watershed. The impact of phytoremediation and bioaugmentation with siderophore-producing bacteria on the fate of Cu was studied in two contrasted (batch vs. semi-continuous) hydraulic regimes. The fate of copper was characterised following its discharge at the outlet of the microcosms, its pore water concentration in the sediment, the assessment of its bioaccessible fraction in the rhizosphere and the measurement of its content in plant tissues. Physico-chemical (pH, redox potential) and biological parameters (total heterotrophic bacteria) were also monitored. As expected, the results showed a clear impact of the hydraulic regime on the redox potential and thus on the pore water concentration of Cu. Copper in pore water was also dependent on the frequency of Cu-polluted water discharges. Repeated bioaugmentation increased the total heterotrophic microflora as well as the Cu bioaccessibility in the rhizosphere and increased the amount of Cu extracted by Phragmites australis by a factor of ~2. Sugar beet pulp, used as a filter to avoid copper flushing, retained 20% of outcoming Cu and led to an overall retention of Cu higher than 94% when arranged at the outlet of microcosms. Bioaugmentation clearly improved the phytoextraction rate of Cu in a small-scaled SWB designed to mimic the functioning of a full-size SWB connected to vineyard watershed. Highlights: Cu phytoextraction in constructed wetlands much depends on the hydraulic regime and on the frequency of Cu-polluted water discharges. Cu phytoextraction increases with time and plant density. Cu bioaccessibility can be increased by bioaugmentation with siderophore-producing bacteria.

Abstract: International audience; A bio-rack system was developed for treating Cu-contaminated freshwaters. Each pilot constructed wetland (CW, 110 dm3) contained 15 perforated vertical pipes filled with a mixture of gravel (diorite; 80%) and perlite (20%) and assembled as a rack. The whole experimental device consisted of 12 CW planted either with Phragmites australis, Phalaris arundinacea or Juncus articulatus, and unplanted as control (in triplicates). All plants were sampled at a Cu-contaminated site. The CWs were filled with a mix of freshwater (30%) from the Jalle d’Eysines River (Bordeaux, France) and tap water (70%). Water was spiked with Cu (2.5 μM, 158.5 μg L−1). Three CW batches were carried out, i.e. in early spring (March, S#1), beginning of the growing season (May, S#2), and peak growing season (June, S#3). The S#3 water was initially acidified to pH 6. For all batches, water was recirculated in the CW during 14 days. Physico-chemical parameters (pH, electrical conductivity, redox potential, BOD5 and Cu2+ concentrations) were measured every three days. Water pH of both S#1 and #2 ranged between 7.8 and 8.5 for all treatments during the experiment. Initial and final total Cu concentrations were analysed for all CWs and batches. Abstract: Instantaneous evapotranspiration rates and surface water stress levels can be deduced from remotely sensed surface temperature data through the surface energy budget. Two families of methods can be defined: the contextual methods, where stress levels are scaled on a given image between hot/dry and cool/wet pixels for a particular vegetation cover, and single-pixel methods, which evaluate latent heat as the residual of the surface energy balance for one pixel independently from the others. Four models, two contextual (S-SEBI and a modified triangle method, named VIT) and two single-pixel (TSEB, SEBS) are applied over one growing season (December–May) for a 4 km × 4 km irrigated agricultural area in the semi-arid northern Mexico. Their performance, both at local and spatial standpoints, are compared relatively to energy balance data acquired at seven locations within the area, as well as an uncalibrated soil–vegetation–atmosphere transfer (SVAT) model forced with local in situ data including observed irrigation and rainfall amounts. Stress levels are not always well retrieved by most models, but S-SEBI as well as TSEB, although slightly biased, show good performance. The drop in model performance is observed for all models when vegetation is senescent, mostly due to a poor partitioning both between turbulent fluxes and between the soil/plant components of the latent heat flux and the available energy. As expected, contextual methods perform well when contrasted soil moisture and vegetation conditions are encountered in the same image (therefore, especially in spring and early summer) while they tend to exaggerate the spread in water status in more homogeneous conditions (especially in winter). Surface energy balance models run with available remotely sensed products prove to be nearly as accurate as the uncalibrated SVAT model forced with in situ data.

Abstract: International audience; Purpose Sugar beet pulp (SBP) has been shown to be a promising low-cost sorbent for the removal of metals from contaminated waters. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of SBP addition to horizontal-flow gravel filters in increasing the copper (Cu) retention ability of stormwater basins. Material and methods Small-scale gravel filters filled with 6 kg of a sand–sediment mix (SS) were used to experimentally treat Cu-contaminated water under conditions that represented an intense storm event. Sugar beet pulp efficiency was assessed by adding 100 g of raw SBP. Two ways of applying SBP were tested: (1) mixed with SS into the gravel filter or (2) packed at the outlet in a PVC column. Eluates were characterized by their volume, pH, Cu and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. Results and discussion When placed at the outlet, SBP fixed 73 % of the Cu remaining in solution and increased the overall retention capacity of the gravel filter to 99.4 %. Conversely, when SBP was mixed with SS, the outflowing water carried higher concentrations of Cu and DOC. Complementary batch experiments underlined the crucial role of DOC in the decline of Cu sorption ability observed when SS and SBP were mixed. Geochemical calculations suggested that DOC (assumed to be pectins) promotes the mobilisation of Cu from SS by complexing it in porewater. Conclusions Accompanied with careful guidance, SBP has the potential of removing dissolved Cu from contaminated water in gravel filters. Abstract: National audience; La remédiation des sols contaminés par des éléments traces métalliques (ETMs) est classiquement réalisée par des interventions d'excavation et d'élimination des terres polluées via des filières appropriées. Si ces méthodes ont l'avantage d'être rapides et efficaces, elles ont aussi l'inconvénient d'être relativement onéreuses et de conduire à une perte brute de sol et, par voie de conséquence, à un appauvrissement des écosystèmes. Difficilement compatibles avec une politique de gestion durable des sols et économiquement très lourdes, ces pratiques ne peuvent donc être utilisées que pour de faibles volumes de matériaux à traiter, pour des sites à forte pression foncière ou dont les usages envisagés imposent de limiter l'exposition des populations. Inversement, le traitement de sites de grandes surfaces, sans pression foncière particulière et dont l'usage prévu autorise la présence de contaminants résiduels doit trouver de nouvelles solutions, acceptables d'un point de vue économique et environnemental. Dans ce contexte, la phytostabilisation représente une alternative prometteuse, qui mérite d'être considérée. Dans son principe, et en théorie, la gestion d'un site par phytostabilisation est assez simple. II consiste à implanter une couverture végétale homogène et pérenne, favorisant l'activité biologique du sol et conduisant, sinon a une immobilisation totale des contaminants, au moins à une réduction de leurs transferts vers les milieux et organismes récepteurs. On sait effectivement depuis longtemps que les plantes ont un effet protecteur sur les sols en limitant leur lessivage et leur érosion hydrique ou éolienne. Par ailleurs, certains végétaux ont la capacité d'immobiliser des métaux et métalloïdes en libérant, au niveau de leur système racinaire, des molécules organiques aux propriétés complexantes ; ils stimulent également l'activité microbienne des sols, notamment à travers les processus rhizosphériques et les symbioses mycorhiziennes. Enfin, la végétalisation d'un site répond aussi au souci d'intégration paysagère et améliore indiscutablement les services écosystémiques rendus par les sols, notamment ceux ayant trait à la fonction d'habitat pour la biodiversité, à la régulation de l'infiltration des eaux et à la production de biomasse.

Abstract: International audience; In France and all over the world, there is no systematic data available on the quality (fertility and contamination) of garden soils. Nevertheless, there is a growing need for a typology and for a method dedicated to national and international garden soil survey. This inventory is much needed in the context of environmental risk assessment, to predict the potential impact on human health of the direct contact with garden soils and of the consumption of vegetables from gardens. The state of the art on the international knowledge on garden soils, gardening practices and food production, shows that gardens remain poorly known and very complex ecological, economical and social systems. Their global quality is the result of a wide number of factors including environment, history, specific characteristics of the gardens, gardeners and their practices, plant and/or animal productions and socio-economic context. The aim is then to better know the determinism of the agronomic, environmental and sanitary properties of gardens as a function of gardening practices and their impact on the quality of soils and plants. We propose a definition of “garden” and more generally of all the field “garden”. The system “garden” is represented by attributes (soil and plant characteristics) and factors with various impacts (e.g. environment > soil parent material > former land uses > age and sex of gardener > gardening practices > socio-professional group > type and proportion of productions > climate > age of the garden > size of the garden > education, information > cultural origin > functions of the garden > regulations). A typology of gardens including 7 selected factors and associated categories and a method for describing, sampling and characterizing a population of gardens representative (for a country) are proposed. Based on the statistical analysis on regional databases, we have determined and proposed an optimum size for the collected population of garden soils. The discussion of the results highlights the main indicators of soil quality and the method for a survey of garden soils is proposed. These results and the resulting approach might be validated and used on a worldwide scale to collect garden soil samples with the objective of agronomic, environmental and sanitary studies adapted to this type of urban agriculture.

Abstract: La région Nord - Pas de Calais est une région très densément peuplée qui a été profondément affectée par des industries lourdes, l'exploitation minière du charbon dans le passé et une agriculture intensive, toujours active. Un jeu de données a été constitué en rassemblant des teneurs en éléments en traces mesurées dans le cadre de différentes études menées sur les sols agricoles de la région. Des facteurs d'enrichissements (FE) ont été calculés en chaque site pour 18 éléments en traces et 250 solums en utilisant l'aluminium comme élément géochimique de référence et un horizon profond ou le matériau parental supposé non contaminé par les activités humaines. L'analyse variographique a révélé que seulement huit métaux traces (Bi, Cd, Cu, In, Pb, Sn, Tl, Zn) sont spatialement corrélés, ce qui a permis d'utiliser la simulation séquentielle gaussienne pour la spatialisation de leurs FE. Le Cd montre un net enrichissement (FE le plus souvent compris entre 3 et 10, parfois plus) sur la quasi-totalité du territoire régional tandis que le Zn et le Pb montrent de forts enrichissements localement (FE de 3 à 30) à proximité immédiate d'usines de production de ces métaux (Auby, Noyelles-Godault, Mortagne-du-Nord) ou de grandes agglomérations (Dunkerque, Lille, Valenciennes, Est du bassin minier). Le Bi, le Cu et le Sn montrent des enrichissements modérés (de 1,5 à 3) sur la moitié du territoire régional, principalement autour des plus grandes villes et des usines de production de Pb et Zn. L'indium et le Tl présentent des FE de 1 à 1,5 sur l'ensemble du territoire avec des valeurs plus élevées en certaines zones urbanisées ou industrialisées. Les cartes de spatialisation des FE, rapprochées de celle de l'occupation du territoire par les activités humaines, montrent les origines principalement industrielle, urbaine et routière des enrichissements en Pb et Zn, de même que ceux, nettement plus faibles en Bi, In et Tl. Les enrichissements en Cu, Sn et Cd comporteraient quant à eux une origine agricole plus importante que ceux des précédents éléments. Certains éléments non spatialement corrélés présentent des FE nettement supérieurs à 1 en moyenne. C'est le cas de Hg, Mn, Mo, Sb et Se. Ces enrichissements ont probablement en partie une origine humaine mais l'impossibilité de modéliser leur distribution spatiale n'a pas permis de les relier aux activités anthropiques. Enfin, As, Co, Cr, Ni et V ne semblent pas avoir été apportés dans les sols par les activités humaines, puisqu'ils présentent des FE proches de 1 et, de plus, non reliés à l'occupation du territoire. Pour certains éléments, les quantités apportées par les activités humaines et stockées dans l'horizon de surface ont été estimées. Les plus importantes sont celles du Pb et du Zn, de l'ordre de 60 000 T. Viennent ensuite le Cu, avec environ 15 000 t, le Sn (environ 2 000 t) et le Cd (environ 1 100 t).

Abstract: International audience; A geochemical and isotopic (water and dissolved sulphate) study was performed on groundwater in the region of Marrakech, Morocco, with the aim of better understanding the regional hydrogeological system in order to improve water resources management. Significant differences in stable isotope contents and chemical compositions were observed between groundwater collected in the northern part of the region (Jbilets massif), where the basement schists outcrop, and that sampled in the southern part (Haouz basin), where the basement schists are overlaid by Plio-Quaternary deposits. The stable isotope composition of the groundwater showed that in the southern part the aquifer is mainly recharged from high-altitude precipitation over the High-Atlas Mountains, which may reach 600 mm per year or more, whereas, in the northern part, it is only recharged by lower-altitude local precipitation, which does not exceed 240 mm per year. Because of this limited supply, the groundwater flux in the northern compartment is much lower than in the southern compartment. This affects the water-rock interaction and the modalities of groundwater mineralization: the schist alteration is more developed in the southern compartment than in the northern one, leading to different behaviours of the conservative elements dissolved in groundwater. The observed geochemical and isotopic zonation of the studied area corresponds to a hydrogeological compartmentalisation, where the wells located in the north of the area generally produce less water than those located in the south of the area. Abstract: On the south shore of the western Mediterranean Basin, mountain forest ecosystems are degraded, mainly due to their overexploitation. Topographic, edaphic and climatic conditions create stressful growing conditions and sensitive ecosystems. Nonetheless, in these ecosystems, forests remain an important resource for the subsistence of local populations. Historically the vulnerability of this resource has prompted mankind to establish traditional control forms of forest and pastoral areas. These common resource management systems are still functioning in the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains under the name of agdal which refers to the territory, the resources and access rules laid down by the local population in order to manage the territory. The estimation of land cover changes was a suitable method to evaluate the effectiveness of these community-based systems for forest conservation. In this paper we highlight the impact of this traditional management on woodland dynamics in a mountainous area (Nit Bouguemez Valley) through the use of remote sensing approaches, associated with forest structure characterisation and the analysis of social mechanisms. A diachronic analysis based on the comparison of aerial photographs (dated 1964) with a recent Spot 5 satellite image (from 2002, 2.5 m resolution) was performed. Estimation of changes in canopy cover percentage was achieved using a graphic chart as a base for the photo-interpretation, and a subsequent validation by field sampling. A map of canopy cover changes between 1964 and 2002 was produced. Ecological measurements of trees were also achieved on field plots. The results indicate that in the past 38 years, forest ecosystems have been affected by a relative decrease of 20.7% of the total forest area, and 8.7% for the mean canopy cover percentage. However, strong disparities in forest dynamics arose according to the agdal or non-agdal status of the forest. Significant progression in canopy cover is noted in controlled agdal areas but large degradation has occurred outside. Regarding the stand ecological conditions, we observed significant differences in the stand structure, according to the management mode. We suggest through this study increased recognition of customary forest regulations, which may be adapted and extrapolated to other communities. However, from an ecological point of view, the agdal system alone is not sufficient to reach a viable management mode in the long term.

Abstract: International audience; Low cost materials (sugar beet pulp, corncob, corncob char, perlite, vermiculite, sand, sediment) have been tested for their ability to quickly sorb copper, glyphosate, diuron and 3,4-dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA) as single or mixed compounds. Tests have been performed in increasingly complex liquid matrices: ultra pure water (UPW), runoff water (RW) and sediment extract medium (SEM). Highest sorption levels in UPW are achieved with corncob char for Cu (93%), glyphosate (74%), diuron (98%) and 3,4-DCA (99%). Other ready-to-use adequate sorbents are sugar beet pulp for Cu and sand for glyphosate, diuron and 3,4-DCA. Sorption levels obtained in UPW are significantly altered in SEM as a result of its higher dissolved organic carbon concentration, tenuous changes being obtained with RW. Interactions between herbicides and Cu are pointed out: higher sorption level is observed for glyphosate in mixture with Cu, as it is observed with diuron and 3,4-DCA when mixed with all other pollutants. Langmuir model has been found to better fit the data for copper, whereas Freundlich one has been found more relevant for diuron and 3,4-DCA. Our results stress the need for studying adsorption in different matrices when searching for sorbents to be used in field conditions.

Abstract: Changes in pig slurry organic matter (OM) during anaerobic digestion (AD) were studied in a reactor to characterize OM evolution through AD. OM maturity and stability were evaluated using different biological and physico-chemical methods. Germination and growth chamber experiments revealed a higher maturity of digested slurry (DS) than raw slurry (RS). Soil incubations showed that DS was more stable than RS with a C-mineralization of 12.0 g CO 2 -C 100 g −1 C org after 49 days as compared to 17.6 g CO 2 -C 100 g −1 C org . Biochemical fractionation showed a relative increase in stable compounds such as hemicellulose-like and lignin-like molecules. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy showed some changes in the chemical structures of OM with a reduction in the aliphatic chain, lipid and polysaccharide levels. A comparison between the evolution of OM during AD and the first weeks of a composting process showed almost identical changes. Finally a theoretical method called Fictitious Atomic-group Separation was applied to the elemental compositions of RS and DS. DS was less humified than RS and presented the properties of a fulvic acid, indicating that the observed stability in DS was mainly due to the biodegradation of the most labile compounds.
