Abstract

This paper gives an account of our progress towards performing femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron diffraction on gas-phase molecules in a pump-probe setup combining optical lasers and an X-ray Free-Electron Laser. We present results of two experiments aimed at measuring photoelectron angular distributions of laser-aligned 1-ethynyl-4-fluorobenzene (C8H5F) and dissociating, laseraligned 1,4-dibromobenzene (C6H4Br2) molecules and discuss them in the larger context of photoelectron diffraction on gas-phase molecules. We also show how the strong nanosecond laser pulse used for adiabatically laser-aligning the molecules influences the measured electron and ion spectra and angular distributions, and discuss how this may affect the outcome of future time-resolved photoelectron diffraction experiments., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, Faraday Discussions 171

Abstract

Photoabsorption by and fluorescence of the K{\alpha} transitions in highly charged iron ions are essential mechanisms for X-ray radiation transfer in astrophysical environments. We study photoabsorption due to the main K{\alpha} transitions in highly charged iron ions from heliumlike to fluorinelike (Fe 24+...17+) using monochromatic X-rays around 6.6 keV at the PETRA III synchrotron photon source. Natural linewidths were determined with hitherto unattained accuracy. 3. Rubber-like elasticity in laser-driven free surface flow of a Newtonian fluid

Abstract

The energy needed to deform an elastic solid may be recovered, while in Newtonian fluids, like water and glycerol, deformation energy dissipates on timescales of the intermolecular relaxation time τM . For times considerably longer than τM the existence of shear elasticity requires long-range correlations, which challenge our understanding of the liquid state. We investigated laser-driven free surface bubbles in liquid glycerol by analyzing their expansion and bursting dynamics, in which we found a flow-dominating, rubber-like elasticity unrelated to surface tension forces. In extension to findings of a measurable liquid elasticity at even very low deformation frequencies [L. Noirez, P. Baroni, J. Mol. Struct. 972, 16–21 (2010), A. Zaccone, K. Trachenko, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 117, 19653–19655 (2020)], that is difficult to access under increased strain, we find a robust, strain rate driven elasticity. The recovery of deformation energy allows the bursting bubble to reach Taylor–Culick velocities 20-fold higher than expected. The elasticity is persistent for microseconds, hence four orders of magnitude longer than τM . The dynamic shows that this persistence cannot originate from the far tail of a distribution of relaxation times around τM but must appear by frustrating the short molecular dissipation. The longer time should be interpreted as a relaxation of collective modes of metastable groups of molecules. With strain rates of 106 s−1, we observe a metastable glycerol shell exhibiting a rubber-like solid behavior with similar elasticity values and characteristic tolerance toward large strains, although the molecular interaction is fundamentally different.

Bewegungen auf atomarer Ebene und molekulare Strukturveränderungen sind Grundphänomene in Chemie und Physik. Schon lange träumt die Wissenschaft davon, diese Prozesse auf den fundamentalen Längen‐ und Zeitskalen direkt zu beobachten. Solche „Molekülfilme“ werden durch Methoden möglich, bei denen ein kurzer Laser‐Pumppuls eine Reaktion startet und nach einer gewissen Verzögerung ein zweiter kurzer Probepuls ihren momentanen Zustand festhält. Für atomare Auflösung benötigt der Probepuls sehr kurze Wellenlängen, etwa Röntgenstrahlung oder Elektronen. Unsere Methode nutzt ultraschnelle Elektronenbeugung mit dem Vorteil relativ kompakter Experimente im Vergleich zu Freie‐Elektronen‐Lasern für Röntgenstrahlung. Damit gelingen uns erste Molekülfilme, die den Ablauf von Reaktionen im atomaren Detail zeigen. Sie geben Einblick in die Auswahlmechanismen, nach denen chemische Reaktionen einen bestimmten Reaktionspfad unter vielen Pfaden wählen.

We study two fundamental transitions from the ground state 1S0 to 1P1 (w line) and 3P1 (y line) in heliumlike Kr34+ by resonant single-photon excitation using an electron-beam ion trap and monochromatic x rays at PETRA III. Our results for the transition energies E(w) = 13114.47(14) eV and E(y) = 13026.15(14) eV are in excellent agreement with quantum electrodynamics calculations, but disagree for w with the average of the hitherto reported experimental results ĒLit(w) = 13115.15(17) eV. Independently of any energy calibration, we obtain a value E(w)/E(y) = 1.006780(7), also in consistency with predictions.

Hence, high accuracy, systematic laboratory measurements of X-ray emission from highly charged ions provide the necessary basis for interpreting spectra measured by X-ray observatories. Over the past two decades, electron beam ion traps have been used in laboratory astrophysics experiments to study X-ray emission from highly charged ions. These data provide reliable benchmarks of theoretical calculations and have addressed specific problems facing the X-ray astrophysics community, and will prove invaluable when interpreting the spectra measured using the SXS on Astro-H. Results focussed on addressing the Fe XVII problem and measuring the rest wavelengths of Kα transitions in L-shell ions of silicon are summarized.

Abstract

There exists a conspicuous gap of knowledge about the organization of life at mesoscopic levels. Ultra-fast coherent diffractive imaging with X-ray free-electron lasers can probe structures at the relevant length scales and may reach sub-nanometer resolution on micron-sized living cells. Here we show that we can introduce a beam of aerosolised cyanobacteria into the focus of the Linac Coherent Light Source and record diffraction patterns from individual living cells at very low noise levels and at high hit ratios. We obtain two-dimensional projection images directly from the diffraction patterns, and present the results as synthetic X-ray Nomarski images calculated from the complex-valued reconstructions. We further demonstrate that it is possible to record diffraction data to nanometer resolution on live cells with X-ray lasers. Extension to sub-nanometer resolution is within reach, although improvements in pulse parameters and X-ray area detectors will be necessary to unlock this potential.

Abstract

Helium nanodroplets are considered ideal model systems to explore quantum hydrodynamics in self-contained, isolated superfluids. However, exploring the dynamic properties of individual droplets is experimentally challenging. In this work, we used single-shot femtosecond x-ray coherent diffractive imaging to investigate the rotation of single, isolated superfluid helium-4 droplets containing ~108 to 1011 atoms. The formation of quantum vortex lattices inside the droplets is confirmed by observing characteristic Bragg patterns from xenon clusters trapped in the vortex cores. The vortex densities are up to five orders of magnitude larger than those observed in bulk liquid helium. The droplets exhibit large centrifugal deformations but retain axially symmetric shapes at angular velocities well beyond the stability range of viscous classical droplets.

Abstract

Single-electron capture in 14 keV q(-1) Ar15+...18++He collisions is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Partial cross sections and projectile scattering angle dependencies have been deduced from the target ion recoil momenta measured by the COLTRIMS technique. The comparison with close-coupling results obtained from a two-centre extension of the basis generator method yields good overall agreement, demonstrating the applicability of close-coupling calculations to collision systems involving highly charged ions in charge states up to 18+.

Abstract

Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit konnte erstmalig die resonante Laserspektroskopie, die präziseste Spektroskopietechnik in Physik und Chemie, in den Spektralbereich weicher Röntgenstrahlung erweitert werden. Unter Verwendung hoch brillanter Strahlung von FLASH (engl. free electron laser in Hamburg) gelang die Vermessung des 2S_1/2-2P_1/2 Grundzustandsübergangs in Li-artigem Fe23+ mit einer relativen Unsicherheit von 20 ppm (engl. parts-per-million) durch direkte resonante Anregung bei etwa 48.6 eV. Die erforderlichen Ionen wurden dabei mittels der in dieser Arbeit aufgebauten Tesla-EBIT (engl. electron beam ion trap) produziert, einer neuartigen, kryogenen EBIT, die insbesondere auf die Bedürfnisse der Laserspektroskopie zugeschnitten ist. Die bei diesem Pionierexperiment erzielte Genauigkeit bezüglich der Größe der Aufspaltung dieses Zustands ist zwar noch vergleichbar derer der genausten konventionellen Messungen, jedoch weist die neue Methode weit in die Zukunft: Die künftig erreichbaren Betriebsparameter bei FLASH und des in Planung befindlichen XFEL werden Messungen der Übergangsenergien im VUV- und Röntgenbereich mit tausendfacher bisheriger Präzision ermöglichen, was beispiellose neue Einblicke in die grundlegenden Aspekte der QED und Atomstrukturphysik in starken Feldern verspricht. Neben den laserspektroskopischen Untersuchungen wurde auch präzise konventionelle Gitterspektroskopie betrieben und dabei verschiedene Grundzustandsübergänge in Be- und Li-artigem Eisen vermessen. Unter anderem gelang es, die 2S_1/2-2P_1/2 Übergangsenergie in Fe23+ mit einer in diesem Spektralbereich unerreichten Genauigkeit von nur 8 ppm zu ermitteln.

Abstract

Unraveling the complex morphology of functional materials like core-shell nanoparticles and its evolution in different environments is still a challenge. Only recently has the single-particle coherent diffraction imaging (CDI), enabled by the ultrabright femtosecond free-electron laser pulses, provided breakthroughs in understanding mesoscopic morphology of nanoparticulate matter. Here, we report the first CDI results for Co@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles randomly clustered in large airborne aggregates, obtained using the x-ray free-electron laser at the Linac Coherent Light Source. Our experimental results compare favourably with simulated diffraction patterns for clustered Co@SiO2 nanoparticles with similar to 10 nm core diameter and similar to 30 nm shell outer diameter, which confirms the ability to resolve the mesoscale morphology of complex metastable structures. The findings in this first morphological study of core-shell nanomaterials are a solid base for future time-resolved studies of dynamic phenomena in complex nanoparticulate matter using x-ray lasers.

Abstract

The resolution of single-shot coherent diffractive imaging at X-ray free-electron laser facilities is limited by the low signal-to-noise level of diffraction data at high scattering angles. The iterative reconstruction methods, which phase a continuous diffraction pattern to produce an image, must be able to extract information from these weak signals to obtain the best quality images. Here we show how to modify iterative reconstruction methods to improve tolerance to noise. The method is demonstrated with the hybrid input-output method on both simulated data and single-shot diffraction patterns taken at the Linac Coherent Light Source. Abstract

The emergence of femtosecond diffractive imaging with X-ray lasers has enabled pioneering structural studies of isolated particles, such as viruses, at nanometer length scales. However, the issue of missing low frequency data significantly limits the potential of X-ray lasers to reveal sub-nanometer details of micrometer-sized samples. We have developed a new technique of dark-field coherent diffractive imaging to simultaneously overcome the missing data issue and enable us to harness the unique contrast mechanisms available in dark-field microscopy. Images of airborne particulate matter (soot) up to two microns in length were obtained using single-shot diffraction patterns obtained at the Linac Coherent Light Source, four times the size of objects previously imaged in similar experiments. This technique opens the door to femtosecond diffractive imaging of a wide range of micrometer-sized materials that exhibit irreproducible complexity down to the nanoscale, including airborne particulate matter, small cells, bacteria and gold-labeled biological samples.

Abstract

Profiling structured beams produced by X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) is crucial to both maximizing signal intensity for weakly scattering targets and interpreting their scattering patterns. Earlier ablative imprint studies describe how to infer the X-ray beam profile from the damage that an attenuated beam inflicts on a substrate. However, the beams in-situ profile is not directly accessible with imprint studies because the damage profile could be different from the actual beam profile. On the other hand, although a Shack-Hartmann sensor is capable of in-situ profiling, its lenses may be quickly damaged at the intense focus of hard X-ray FEL beams. We describe a new approach that probes the in-situ morphology of the intense FEL focus. By studying the translations in diffraction patterns from an ensemble of randomly injected sub-micron latex spheres, we were able to determine the non-Gaussian nature of the intense FEL beam at the Linac Coherent Light Source (SLAC National Laboratory) near the FEL focus. We discuss an experimental application of such a beam-profiling technique, and the limitations we need to overcome before it can be widely applied.
