This paper presents a novel TSA mechanism with an adjustable offset between strings, which enables a variable transmission system. TSA is designed to be used in a variety of applications, including exoskeletons, and robotics. The fixed contraction range of TSAs limits their ability to provide comprehensive support. The proposed mechanism overcomes this limitation by adjusting the offset between strings. The mechanism consists of six parts with two motors. Each motor in the mechanism operates to adjust offset with only one motor and operates simultaneously to twist the strings. This enables the contraction range of TSA to be varied a wide range. Furthermore, an analytical model is also introduced for controlling the contraction range of TSA. In the experiment, the proposed mechanism shows the contraction range of TSA to be increased by up to 20%. Additionally, it showed that it is possible to vary the maximum force of TSA by up to 47%. Moreover, the analytical model has a low error. These findings suggest the promising potential for the developed TSA mechanism in a variety of applications. • Propose of a novel Twisted String Actuator (TSA) with continuous variable transmission through variation of offset between strings. • The proposed mechanism used epicyclic gear structure and expanding mechanism. • A new analytical TSA model for the proposed mechanism. • Evaluate analytical models via Normalized Root Mean Square Error (NRMSE) and Nominal Range Sensitivity Analysis (NRSA). One of the problems faced by the screwdrivers used for craniomaxillofacial implant fixation is that the maximum torque required for implant removal is significantly higher than the maximum torque needed for inserting implants. Another problem is that the hand torque produced by a right-handed person is lower in the counterclockwise direction, which is the removal direction for miniscrews. The novel design presented here of a manual screwdriver equipped with an epicyclic gear will produce a reverse bit rotation and provide the mechanical advantage of higher torque output. In this study, simulations were conducted by varying the torque input within the range of 0-1000 Nmm with an applied load in each simulation to be adapted based on the epicyclic gear set. The materials used in this study are AISI 316L and Ti6Al4V. The maximum Von Mises stress value was observed in the sun gear from the second gear set at 522.59 MPa (AISI 316L) and 430.76 MPa (Ti6Al4V) for the maximum torque input, which was followed by the planetary and ring gear from the second gear set and then the planetary gear, ring gear, and sun gear from the first gear set. The total deformation also showed the difference between the two materials; the deformation when using AISI 316L as the material was lower than when using Ti6Al4V. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This dissertation aims to analyse the effect of the misalignment of a train Epicyclic’s exterior ring in a set of operating parameters commonly used in the mechanical characterisation of gears. For this purpose, a numerical model was elaborated, by the Finite Element Method, from a mathematical formulation that allows the generation of the tooth profile. This model allowed to correctly reproduce a portion of the gearing cycle of a simplified epicyclic train, formed by a single satellite wheel, in the absence of friction. The operating parameters were the contact pressure, the contact area of the teeth, as well as the normal and tangential force developed in the contact between the teeth. With this study is possible to identify patterns of behaviour in the parameters mentioned above, along the same portion of the gearing cycle. These patterns were later compared with those obtained in the misalignment condition of the exterior ring, revealing notable differences., Este trabalho teve o apoio da FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, através do Programa bilateral com a Tunísia, intitulado “Modelação híbrida para estudo e análise do comportamento dinâmico de sistemas de transmissão mecânica por rodas dentadas”.

This paper describes the design and shifting dynamics of a novel and small-sized transmission which composed of three epicyclic gear modules and a hub shaft in conjunction with several clutches. The proposed epicyclic gear train can be used in a personal mobility vehicle such as an electric utility vehicle and small car, etc. And it is distinguished from others for its small size, light weight, high efficiency, and wide speed range up to 18 gear steps. In this paper, its dynamic behavior is dealt with in order to ensure the automatic and robust shifts according to the shift commands, focused on the shift mechanism design. First the overall structure and operating principles of the transmission are described in detail. Based on the CAD data of whole components, a detailed multibody dynamic model is built using ADAMS software which can analyze the dynamic behavior of a mechanical system. Then numerical simulations are performed during the shift and whole operating period. From the simulation and experiment results, the overall performance and operating principles of the 18 speed epicyclic transmission are discussed and the design of shift device is optimized to ensure the robust shift finally. This work is included in a more extended study on small volumetric machines, that are suitable for a developing small solar power plant (1-3 kW). This paper presents both experimental and numerical analysis of an innovative reciprocating compressor. Its main feature is the use of an epicyclic gear to drive the pistons. The first section of the article illustrates the advantages of this design choice. The main advantage is the lack of lateral forces on the piston. The second section of this work focuses on the experimental characterization of the compressor. The experimental tests were performed on several operation points so obtaining the indicator diagrams. The efficiency and the specific work of the studied compressor were compared with data from pertinent scientific literature. Finally, a numerical thermo-fluid-dynamic model developed in MATLABܘ is presented. The model considers thermal exchanges for every compression phase. The numerical data are then compared with the real ones.

This research work was conducted at the Contact and Structural Mechanics Laboratory (LaMCoS) of LaMCoS - INSA Lyon (UMR CNRS 5259) in partnership with Hispano-Suiza (SAFRAN group). In the context of new turbo jet engine developments, a promising technological solution consists in inserting a planetary / epicyclic gear train between the turbine and the propeller which, in theory, can improve the system performance, especially in terms of efficiency. Increasing power densities and mass reduction constraints lead to more compliant structures which need to be analyzed from a dynamic viewpoint. The present work deals therefore with the dynamic modelling of planetary / epicyclic gears and the effects of assembly errors, tooth shape deviations and deformable structural components. A lumped parameter approach has been favored which combines rigid-body gear elements, beam and lumped parameters elements. A thin-slice model has been used to simulate the time-varying elastic properties of gear teeth with an elemental stiffness and a normal deviation functions attributed to every discrete cell on the contact lines (thin slice) and updated at each time step with respect to the meshing course and the instant positions of the teeth. Ring-gear deformations are introduced via a model of elastic annulus discretized into straight beam elements and connected to the gear elements. Double-helical gears are simulated by linking two gear elements of opposite hands by Timoshenko beam elements. The possibility of helix stagger is implemented by shifting the helix positions in the base plane. Finally, the equations of motion are solved step by step in time by combining a Newmark scheme and a normal contact algorithm which makes it possible to account for partial and total instant contact losses. A number of comparisons with benchmark results from the literature are presented which prove that the proposed theoretical and numerical developments are sound and can actually be used to simulate the influence of planet position errors, helix stagger, pitch errors and ring-gear deformations. The optimization of tooth shape modifications, i.e. profile and lead modifications, re dynamic mesh forces in planetary gears is tackled. Using a genetic algorithm, optimum profile modifications are derived and compared with some analytical results in the literature. Their performance over a range of loads and speeds is assessed for helical and double helical gears with rigid and flexible ring-gears. A quasi-static “equivalent” criterion based on local transmission errors is presented and commented upon. Having proved its relevance, a number of results are derived concerning the influence of helix stagger and lead crowning superimposed on optimum profile modifications.

- Abstract
The invention is directed to a compact bicoupled contrarotating epicyclic gear, a rotatable input shaft for providing an input-torque, a first-stage epicyclic gear, a second-stage epicyclic gear mutually drivably coupled to and in axial alignment with the first epicyclic gear, an outer-output shaft for conveying an outer-output-torque in response to the input-torque, and an inner-output shaft coaxial with the outer-output shaft for conveying an inner-output-torque in response to the input-torque. The bicoupled contrarotating epicyclic gear further includes at least one interstage torque carrier rotatably connecting the first and second epicyclic gears in series such that the first and second sun gears, the first and second planet carriers, and the first and second ring gears rotate and convey useful torque in response to the input-torque. The outer-output shaft is connected to the second-stage ring gear for rotating therewith in a first direction, and the inner-output shaft is torsionally coupled with the second-stage planet carrier for rotating therewith in a second direction, the second direction being opposite the first direction.
