The adherence of pathogenic microorganisms to surfaces and their association to form antibiotic-resistant biofilms threatens public health and affects several industrial sectors with significant economic losses. For this reason, the medical, pharmaceutical and materials science communities are exploring more effective anti-fouling approaches. This review focuses on the anti-fouling properties, structure–activity relationships and environmental toxicity of quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) and, as a subclass, ionic liquid compounds. Greener alternatives such as QAS-based antimicrobial polymers with biocide release, non-fouling (i.e., PEG, zwitterions), fouling release (i.e., poly(dimethylsiloxanes), fluorocarbon) and contact killing properties are highlighted. We also report on dual-functional polymers and stimuli-responsive materials. Given the economic and environmental impacts of biofilms in submerged surfaces, we emphasize the importance of less explored QAS-based anti-fouling approaches in the marine industry and in developing efficient membranes for water treatment systems. The growth rate of reproductive system disorders caused by heavy metals is undeniable. The effect of time and interfering compounds are also of paramount importance. The main objective of this study was to compare the effects of broccoli extract and vitamin C in the context of cadmium poisoning on various reproductive parameters in mice, with a specific focus on the influence of time. A total of one hundred and forty-four male mice were randomly assigned to six groups. The control (C) group received only water and a standard diet without any interventions. The Cd group received a single intraperitoneal dose of cadmium chloride at 1.5 mg/kg. The cadmium intervention groups were administered broccoli extract at dosages of 100 mg/kg (Cd + B100), 200 mg/kg (Cd + B200), and 300 mg/kg (Cd + B300), respectively. Additionally, the Cd + VC group was treated with cadmium and vitamin C at 200 mg/kg intraperitoneally for a duration of 28 days. At the end of each week (four stages), five animals were randomly chosen from each group. Epididymal sperm were subjected to analysis for sperm parameters, while testicular tissue sections were examined for histological studies, apoptosis index, and markers of oxidative stress. The influence of time on body and testis weight gain was notably significant in the Cd + B300 and Cd + VC groups (p = 0.001). In all groups, except for Cd + B100, there were marked increases in spermatogenic cell lines and the Johnson coefficient compared to the Cd group (p = 0.001). These changes were particularly pronounced in the Cd + VC and Cd + B300 groups with respect to time (p < 0.001). Furthermore, there was a discernible positive impact of time on sperm count in the high-dose broccoli and vitamin C groups, although this effect did not reach significance in terms of sperm motility and vitality. Over time, the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes increased, while malondialdehyde (MDA) levels decreased in the Cd + VC, Cd + B200, and Cd + B300 groups (p = 0.001). The apoptosis index in testicular tissue reached its highest level in the Cd group and its lowest level in the Cd + B300 and Cd + VC groups during the fourth week (p < 0.05). Linolenic acid, indole, and sulforaphane were identified as the most potent compounds in broccoli during this intervention. Consequently, vitamin C and broccoli extract at a dosage of 300 mg/kg demonstrated significant enhancements in reproductive performance in cases of cadmium poisoning. Heavy metals (HMs) are widely used in various industries. High concentrations of HMs can be severely toxic to plants, animals and humans. Microorganism-based bioremediation has shown significant potential in degrading and detoxifying specific HM contaminants. In this study, we cultivated a range of bacterial strains in liquid and solid nutrient medium containing different concentrations of different HMs to select and analyze bacteria capable of transforming HMs. The bacterial strains most resistant to selected HMs and exhibiting the ability to remove HMs from contaminated soils were identified. Then, the bacterial species capable of utilizing HMs in soil model experiments were selected, and their ability to transform HMs was evaluated. This study has also generated preliminary findings on the use of plants for further removal of HMs from soil after microbial bioremediation. Alcaligenes faecalis, Delftia tsuruhatensis and Stenotrophomonas sp. were selected for their ability to grow in and utilize HM ions at the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) and two times the MPC. Lysinibacillus fusiformis (local microflora) can be used as a universal biotransformation tool for many HM ions. Brevibacillus parabrevis has potential for the removal of lead ions, and Brevibacillus reuszeri and Bacillus safensis have potential for the removal of arsenic ions from the environment. Introduction: The rapid development of nanotechnologies with their widespread prosperities has advanced concerns regarding potential health hazards of the Nanoparticles. Results: Nanoparticles are currently present in several consumer products, including medications, food, textiles, sports equipment, and electrical components. Despite the advantages of Nanoparticles, their potential toxicity has negative impact on human health, particularly on reproductive health. Conclusions: The impact of various NPs on reproductive system function is yet to be determined. Additional research is required to study the potential toxicity of various Nanoparticles on reproductive health. The primary objective of this review is to unravel the toxic effects of different Nanoparticles on the human reproductive functions and recent investigations on the reproductive toxicity of Nanoparticles both in vitro and in vivo. The global COVID-19 pandemic has led to the enforcement of stringent measures to prevent the transmission of the severe lung illness it causes. However, there's growing concern about the environmental impact of these measures. Moreover, fine particulate matter, namely PM2.5 that harms lung health, especially after a pandemic, is a crucial contributor to the spread of the virus. In addition, microplastics and nano-plastics are released due to the breakdown of disposed face masks in nature, a process that is still poorly understood because of limited studies. Additionally, the spread of toxins from discarded face masks through air pollutants like PM2.5 and their detrimental effects on the ecosystem, including direct toxicity to human beings, the food chain, aquatic life, and companion animals, are taken into consideration. This review paper investigates analytical techniques and possible approaches to reduce the spread of discarded face masks and the contaminants they carry, while recognising the difficulties in tackling this intricate problem. By comprehending the interplay between face masks, COVID-19, and PM2.5, we may get a deeper knowledge of the repercussions and strive to reduce their detrimental impact on health and the environment by taking educated preventative steps. High lead (Pb) levels in agricultural soil and wastewater threaten ecosystems and organism health. Microbial remediation is a cost-effective, efficient, and eco-friendly alternative to traditional physical or chemical methods for Pb remediation. Previous research indicates that micro-organisms employ various strategies to combat Pb pollution, including biosorption, bioprecipitation, biomineralization, and bioaccumulation. This study delves into recent advancements in Pb-remediation techniques utilizing bacteria, fungi, and microalgae, elucidating their detoxification pathways and the factors that influence Pb removal through specific case studies. It investigates how bacteria immobilize Pb by generating nanoparticles that convert dissolved lead (Pb-II) into less harmful forms to mitigate its adverse impacts. Furthermore, the current review explores the molecular-level mechanisms and genetic engineering techniques through which microbes develop resistance to Pb. We outline the challenges and potential avenues for research in microbial remediation of Pb-polluted habitats, exploring the interplay between Pb and micro-organisms and their potential in Pb removal.

Particulate matter (PM) is a mixture of microscopic solid inhalable particles including airborne liquid droplets, and it is implicated with several diseases. The eye does not have a protective barrier among the human organs, consequently it get directly exposed to environmental substances such as PM. The scarcity of treatments for damage to the eyesight and the vision and eye structure being closely related to the structure and function of the central nervous system highlights the cruciality of novel therapeutics. In this study was conducted using in vivo zebrafish vertebrate model which is a useful model due to the conserved genes between human. We found that protective effect of Octopus minor extract against particulate matter-induced adverse effects on eye development in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos by regulating antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mRNA expression.

Pharmaceutical-induced environmental contamination demands urgent attention, with around 43% of global rivers facing risks from active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). The entire spectrum of pharmaceutical products, including active and inactive components, requires serious consideration due to continuous emissions and potential hazards to the environment and human health. Discussions on chemical waste reduction face limitations due to incomplete knowledge about their toxicity to humans. Despite various initiatives, collaboration evidence is minimal, and environmental health disparities persist in socially disadvantaged communities, leading to higher disease rates. While awareness of ecotoxicity is growing, the European Union (EU), United States (US) and Canada have taken steps, including disposal procedures, prevention strategies, and focus on concerns like antimicrobial resistance. Autophagy, a catabolic process integral to cellular homeostasis, is constitutively active under physiological and stress conditions. The role of autophagy as a cellular defense response becomes particularly evident upon exposure to nanomaterials (NMs), especially environmental nanoparticles (NPs) and nanoplastics (nPs). This has positioned autophagy modulation at the forefront of nanotechnology-based therapeutic interventions. While NMs can exploit autophagy to enhance therapeutic outcomes, they can also trigger it as a pro-survival response against NP-induced toxicity. Conversely, a heightened autophagy response may also lead to regulated cell death (RCD), in particular autophagic cell death, upon NP exposure. Thus, the relationship between NMs and autophagy exhibits a dual nature with therapeutic and environmental interventions. Recognizing and decoding these intricate patterns are essential for pioneering next-generation autophagy-regulating NMs. This review delves into the present-day therapeutic potential of autophagy-modulating NMs, shedding light on their status in clinical trials, intervention of autophagy in the therapeutic applications of NMs, discusses the potency of autophagy for application as early indicator of NM toxicity. N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) is commonly used in rubber compounds as antioxidants to protect against degradation from heat, oxygen, and ozone exposure. This practice extends the lifespan of rubber products, including tires, by preventing cracking, aging, and deterioration. However, the environmental consequences of waste generated during rubber product use, particularly the formation of 6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q) through the reaction of 6PPD with ozone, have raised significant concerns due to their detrimental effects on ecosystems. Extensive research has revealed the widespread occurrence of 6PPD and its derivate 6PPD-Q in various environmental compartments, including air, water, and soil. The emerging substance of 6PPD-Q has been shown to pose acute mortality and long-term hazards to aquatic and terrestrial organisms at concentrations below environmentally relevant levels. Studies have demonstrated toxic effects of 6PPD-Q on a range of organisms, including zebrafish, nematodes, and mammals. These effects include neurobehavioral changes, reproductive dysfunction, and digestive damage through various exposure pathways. Mechanistic insights suggest that mitochondrial stress, DNA adduct formation, and disruption of lipid metabolism contribute to the toxicity induced by 6PPD-Q. Recent findings of 6PPD-Q in human samples, such as blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid, underscore the importance of further research on the public health and toxicological implications of these compounds. The distribution, fate, biological effects, and underlying mechanisms of 6PPD-Q in the environment highlight the urgent need for additional research to understand and address the environmental and health impacts of these compounds.

Environmental aluminum intoxication has shown increasingly alarming negative consequences on reproductive health. This needs mechanistic exploration and preventive management using medicines like herbal supplementation. The ameliorative effects of naringenin (NAR) against AlCl3-induced reproductive toxicity were thus evaluated in this study by assessing testicular dysfunction in albino male mice. A group of mice was treated with AlCl3 (10 mg/kg b.w./day) and then with NAR (10 mg/kg b.w./day) for a total of sixty-two days. Results show that treatment of AlCl3 significantly reduced the body weight and testis weight of mice. AlCl3 caused oxidative damage in mice as evidenced by an increase in the concentration of nitric oxide, advanced oxidation of protein product, protein carbonylation, and lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, diminished activity of antioxidant moieties included superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, reduced glutathione, and oxidized glutathione. Several histological changes, such as spermatogenic cell degeneration, germinal epithelium detachment, and structural abnormalities in seminiferous tubules, were observed in AlCl3-treated mice. Oral administration of NAR was found to restore body weight and testes weight and ameliorated reproductive dysfunctions. NAR decreased oxidative stress, replenished the antioxidant defense system, and improved histopathological alterations in the AlCl3-treated testes. Therefore, the present study suggests that the supplementation of NAR may be a beneficial strategy to mitigate AlCl3-induced reproductive toxicity and testicular dysfunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Species Sensitivity Distribution (SSD) is a key metric for understanding the potential ecotoxicological impacts of chemicals. However, SSDs have been developed to estimate for only handful of chemicals due to the scarcity of experimental toxicity data. Here we present a novel approach to expand the chemical coverage of SSDs using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). We collected over 2000 experimental toxicity data in Lethal Concentration 50 (LC50) for 8 aquatic species and trained an ANN model for each of the 8 aquatic species based on molecular structure. The R2 values of resulting ANN models range from 0.54 to 0.75 (median R2 = 0.69). We applied the predicted LC50 values to fit SSD curves using bootstrapping method, generating SSDs for 8424 chemicals in the ToX21 database. The dataset is expected to serve as a screening-level reference SSD database for understanding potential ecotoxicological impacts of chemicals.

Fluoride (F−) contamination in drinking water is a major global concern. According to several studies, India and China are the most affected by the presence of excess F−. Long-time exposure to F- concentrations above 1.5 ppm can lead to hard and soft tissue fluorosis (F- toxicity). There are no effective cure or treatment for fluorosis and the condition is almost irreversible. Considering water to be the prime media through which F− reaches humans, maintaining optimal F− levels in water remains the only possible remedy. F− endemic areas have adapted several conventional defluoridation techniques to resolve the issue. Among these, adsorption with plant compounds is widely used for F− removal. Studies have shown that plant metabolites can ameliorate the toxic effects of F−. Based on this, we attempt to elucidate the potential binding and electrochemical bio-sensing properties of selected phytochemicals towards F−. The focus of the present work is to evaluate the interactions of phytochemicals with F−; for which, the binding studies of phytochemicals with F− have been elaborated by UV–visible spectroscopy and emission techniques. Benesi–Hildebrand's (BH) plot was used to calculate the binding constant (CUR - 34.9 × 103 (M−1), QUER - 13 × 103 (M-1), ESC -6.3 × 103 (M−1), FIS - 5.36 × 103 (M-1) and PCA -1.5 × 103 (M−1), and detection limit (CUR - 1.54 × 10–7 M, QUER - 0.156 × 10-6 M, ESC - 0.221 × 10–6 M, FIS - 0.175 × 10-6 M, and PCA - 5.8 × 10–6 M) for the F−:phytochemical mixtures. Further, the binding characteristics were confirmed using 1H-NMR titration experiments. Triclosan, belonging to the bisphenols, is a known antiseptic broad‐spectrum biocide. It has a very wide range of applications, both in health care and in the household. Triclosan enters the environment, both water bodies and soil, because of its high prevalence and the ability to accumulation. Excessive use of antimicrobial formulations may cause the generation of resistance among microorganisms. Reduced susceptibility to triclosan is observed more frequently and in an expanded group of microorganisms and is conditioned by a number of different mechanisms occurring on the molecular level. Conventional wastewater treatment processes are not always able to provide a reliable barrier to triclosan. Therefore, additional advanced treatment technologies are being considered in areas, where a triclosan contamination problem has been identified. Removal of triclosan from wastewater is carried out using different biological and chemical techniques; however, it should be pointed out that physico‐chemical methods often generate toxic by‐products. Toxicity of triclosan and its degradation products, bacterial resistance to this compound, and evident problems with triclosan elimination from wastewater are currently the main problems faced by companies creating products containing triclosan. Nanobodies (Nbs) are known as camelid single-domain fragments or variable heavy chain antibodies (VHH) that in vitro recognize the antigens (Ag) similar to full-size antibodies (Abs) and in vivo allow immunoreactions with biomolecule cavities inaccessible to conventional Abs. Currently, Nbs are widely used for clinical treatments due to their remarkably improved performance, ease of production, thermal robustness, superior physical and chemical properties. Interestingly, Nbs are also very promising bioreceptors for future rapid and portable immunoassays, compared to those using unstable full-size antibodies. For all these reasons, Nbs are excellent candidates in ecological risk assessments and advanced medicine, enabling the development of ultrasensitive biosensing platforms. In this review, immobilization strategies of Nbs on conductive supports for enhanced electrochemical immune detection of food contaminants (Fcont) and human biomarkers (Hbio) are discussed. In the case of Fcont, the direct competitive immunoassay detection using coating antigen solid surface is the most commonly used approach for efficient Nbs capture which was characterized with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) when the signal decays for increasing concentrations of free antigen prepared in aqueous solutions. In contrast, for the Hbio investigations on thiolated gold electrodes, increases in amperometric and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) signals were recorded, with increases in the antigen concentrations prepared in PBS or spiked real human samples. In this work, we developed and used research methods that will make it possible to quickly assess the toxic activity of, among others, metal nanoparticles. In this work, we assessed the toxicity of PbO nanoparticles obtained from biological synthesis using Farfarae folium. The obtained PbO nanoparticles were characterized with the use of such methods as UV–VIS, XRD, SEM with EDS, AFM and FTIR. The techniques applied in the work confirmed the presence of 30–40 nm PbO nanoparticles. The toxic properties of biologically synthesized nanoparticles were assessed with the use of plants and invertebrates. The phytotoxicity studies were conducted on the following plant seeds: radish, garden cress, bean, rape, chia, lupine, corn, and beetroot. The IC50 coefficient was calculated on the basis of the logarithmic relationship Aw = a*ln(C) + b. The studies also used the following invertebrates: Daphnia pulex, Tubifex tubifex, Chaoborus sp. (larva), Chironomus aprilinus, Artemia sp. The EC50 coefficient was calculated after the incubation period. For PbO nanoparticles, we managed to identify the IC50 coefficient for selected plants. It was, respectively, 0.150 mg/ml for lupine; 0.274 mg/ml for bean; and 0.655 mg/ml for radish. As regards the studies on invertebrates, it was observed that the most sensitive organisms were Daphnia pulex (EC50 = 0.32 mg/ml) and Tubifex tubifex (EC50 = 0.38 mg/ml), and the most resistant one was Chironomus aprilinus (EC50 = 0.83 mg/ml). Among the highly diverse range of biobased polymers, polylactic acid (PLA) received vast attention in recent years due to its versatility for different applications and being the first commercially used polymer produced from renewable sources. Production and application of bio-based, biodegradable plastics will have one of the most crucial roles in tackling worldwide plastic pollution.Methods: This study is based on integrative ecotoxicological assessment of an innovative PLA-based agricultural mulch film (BPE-AMF-PLA), developed under the H2020 EU project “BIO-PLASTICS EUROPE”, towards organisms from different environmental compartments (soil, fresh water and marine) and from different trophic levels. Such comprehensive evaluation has an overarching goal to promote environmentally safe and sustainable use of these PLA-based plastics for agricultural and other potential applications.Results: Low-to-no phytotoxicity was obtained in both single-species standardized bioassays, and in a multi-species microcosms experiment. Earthworm reproduction was negatively affected at the lowest test concentration of 0.1% w/w of PLA-based plastic particles. For freshwater Daphnia, reproduction was found a sensitive endpoint, upon exposure to the leachates of the PLA-based plastic. However, the reported toxicity seemed to be caused by the presence of 2-methylnaphthalene, which can be avoided in the production process. As for the marine organisms, algae growth was inhibited with a LOEC = 25 g L−1, whereas test with brine shrimp only revealed stimulation of lipase upon digestion of micro-sized PLA-based plastics. Marine lugworm ingested pristine and UV pre-treated micro-sized plastics, yet without impact either on biological activity, or on the health of the test individuals.Discussion: The approach used in the present work will contribute to product development, environmental safety and sustainable applications of the PLA-based mulch film BPE-AMF-PLA, in the scope of project BIO-PLASTICS EUROPE. Furthermore, the tools and results obtained in this work are a relevant contribution in the framework development for additional support in the certification of the bio-based polymers, being aligned with European zero waste and non-toxicity strategies, certification, and regulations.

Simple Summary: Consumption and excessive use of substances or items that are taken for granted in our daily lives such as personal care products, plastic objects, and medicines inevitably lead to their release into marine and freshwater systems with, unfortunately, potentially devastating consequences over time. For this reason, it is of crucial importance that the scientific community, as well as society, is aware of the environmental problems linked mainly to the release of contaminants into the sea. In this context, the Mediterranean Sea is a special biodiversity hotspot of marine fauna and flora. Nevertheless, it is becoming a source of concern due to the presence of emerging pollutants. In the present paper, the specific focus on the catshark Scyliorhinus canicula, as a vertebrate species, and on the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, as an invertebrate, lies in their ability to provide appropriate information about the health conditions of their surrounding environment. The studies reported on this topic show that it is rather evident that entire aquatic ecosystems suffer from anthropogenic pollution. Therefore, this review aims to collect and demonstrate its effects on the environment and organisms' health. In this historical context, the Mediterranean Sea faces an increasing threat from emerging pollutants such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, heavy metals, pesticides and microplastics, which pose a serious risk to the environment and human health. In this regard, aquatic invertebrates and fish are particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of these pollutants, and several species have been identified as bio-indicators for their detection. Among these, bivalve molluscs and elasmobranchs are now widely used as bio-indicators to accurately assess the effects of contaminants. The study focuses on the catshark Scyliorhinus canicular and on the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. The first one is a useful indicator of localised contamination levels due to its exposure to pollutants that accumulate on the seabed. Moreover, it has a high trophic position and plays an important role in the Mediterranean Sea ecosystem. The bivalve mollusc Mytilus galloprovincialis, on the other hand, being a filter-feeding organism, can acquire and bioaccumulate foreign particles present in its environment. Additionally, because it is also a species of commercial interest, it has a direct impact on human health. In conclusion, the increasing presence of emerging pollutants in the Mediterranean Sea is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. Bivalve molluscs and elasmobranchs are two examples of bio-indicators that must be used to precisely determine the effects of these pollutants on the marine ecosystem and human health. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs) that persist and bioaccumulate in the environment have aroused people's great concern. Here, we studied the adverse effects of FQs in soil animals of Caenorhabditis elegans via food-chronically exposure. The result shows C. elegans exposed to FQs exhibited reproductive toxicity with small-brood size and low-egg hatchability. To study the underlying mechanism, we conduct a deep investigation of enrofloxacin (ENR), one of the most frequently detected FQs, on nematodes which is one of commonly used animal indicator of soil sustainability. The concentration-effect curves simulated by the Hill model showed that the half effect concentrations (EC 50) of ENR were (494.3 ± 272.9) µmol/kg and (107.4 ± 30.9) µmol/kg for the brood size and the hatchability, respectively. Differential gene expression between the control and the ENR-exposure group enriched with the oxidative stress and cell apoptosis pathways. The results together with the enzyme activity in oxidative stress and the cell corpses suggested that ENR-induced reproductive toxicity was related to germ cell apoptosis under oxidative stress. The risk quotients of some soil and livestock samples were calculated based on the threshold value of EC 10 for the egg hatchability (2.65 µmol/kg). The results indicated that there was possible reproductive toxicity on the nematodes in certain agricultural soils for the FQs. This study suggested that chronic exposure to FQs at certain levels in environment would induce reproductive toxicity to the nematodes and might reduce the soil sustainability, alarming the environment risks of antibiotics abuse. Information on the oxidative stress physiology parameters (OSPP) in general and as a function of the fluctuation of Mg, Ca and organic carbon present in soil and aquatic physico-chemical factors such as pH, temperature and salinity in particular are scanty in the amphibious snail Pila globosa. A spatio-temporal analysis of redox metabolism (as OSPP) followed by discriminant function analysis of the obtained data were performed in P. globosa sampled from the east-coasts of Odisha state, India (mostly along the Bay of Bengal) for environmental health assessment purposes. Results revealed that the OSPP are susceptible to seasonal synergistic variation of soil and physico-chemical factors. Overall, lipid peroxidation, total antioxidant capacity, activities of catalase, glutathione reductase had positive correlation whereas ascorbic acid, the reduced glutathione and the activity of superoxide dismutase had non-significant correlation with the soil Mg, Ca, organic carbon, and pH, temperature and salinity of water. In the summer season, the snails had a marked 51.83% and 26.41% higher lipid peroxidation level and total antioxidative activity as compared to the other seasons. Spatial variation of OSPP indicates that snails residing away from the Bay of Bengal coast had at least 4.4% lower antioxidant level in winter and 30% higher lipid peroxide levels in summer as compared to the rest of the sampling sites. Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a non-aromatic compound belonging to the bromine flame retardant family and is a known persistent organic pollutant (POP). This compound accumulates easily in the environment and has a high half-life in water. With a variety of uses, the HBCD is found in house dust, electronics, insulation, and construction. There are several isomers and the most studied are α-, β-, and γ-HBCD. Initially used as a substitute for other flame retardants, the polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), the discovery of its role as a POP made HBCD use and manufacturing restricted in Europe and other countries. The adverse effects on the environment and human health have been piling, either as a result from its accumulation or considering its power as an endocrine disruptor (ED). Furthermore, it has also been proven that it has detrimental effects on the neuronal system, endocrine system, cardiovascular system, liver, and the reproductive system. HBCD has also been linked to cytokine production, DNA damage, increased cell apoptosis, increased oxidative stress, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Therefore, this review aims to compile the most recent studies regarding the negative effects of this compound on the environment and human health, describing the possible mechanisms by which this compound acts and its possible toxic effects. This study reports on the in vivo molluscicidal activity and Artemia salina lethality of Azorean Cryptomeria japonica leaf (CJL) essential oils (EOs) obtained by hydrodistillation (HD) and water-steam distillation (WSD) techniques, especially in light of the recent focus on the use of forestry and wood industry residues in a sustainable world economy. Molluscicidal activity was performed during several life stages of Radix peregra by the immersion method, under laboratory conditions. A first screening through a single-dose bioassay revealed that both EOs were highly active towards eggs, juveniles and adult snails (ca. 100% mortality). Concentration- and time-toxicity assays were carried out only on adult snails to determine the lethal parameters (LC50;90 and LT50;90). The LC50 values were 33 and 62 µg/mL for EO–WSD and EO–HD, respectively, after 48 h. The LT50 of EO–WSD required only 21 h for both 16 h and continous exposure periods, while that of EO–HD was slighty superior (21.8–25.6 h). Although not significant, EO–WSD was also slightly more toxic against A. salina than EO–HD (LC50 = 98 and 115 µg/mL after 24 h, respectively). In conclusion, Azorean CJL EOs, which are rich in α-pinene (mostly EO–WSD), have huge potential to be used as safe raw materials for the development of natural molluscicide products to control snails responsible for transmitting fascioliasis. Nitrites are metastable anions that are derived from the oxidation of ammonia by agricultural pollution, sewage, decaying protein, and other nitrogen sources. They are a recognized environmental issue due to their role in eutrophication, as well as in surface and groundwater contamination, being toxic to almost all living creatures. Recently, we reported on the high efficiency of two cationic resins (R1 and R2) forming hydrogels (R1HG and R2HG) by dispersion in water in removing anionic dyes from water by electrostatic binding. Here, aiming at developing adsorbent materials for nitrite remediation, R1, R2, R1HG, and R2HG were first tested in adsorption experiments in batches monitored by UV–Vis methods, using the Griess reagent system (GRS) in order to assess their removal efficiency by contact over time. Particularly, samples of water appositely contaminated with nitrites were analyzed by UV–Vis before and during treatment with the hydrogels. The initial concentration of nitrites was quantified (118 mg/L). Then, the removal of nitrites over time, the removal efficiency of R1HG (89.2%) and of R2HG (89.6%), their maximum adsorption (21.0 mg/g and 23.5 mg/g), as well as the adsorption kinetics and mechanisms were evaluated. Additionally, R1HG- and R2HG-based columns (h = 8–10 cm, ØE = 2 cm) mimicking mini-scale decontamination systems by filtration were used to rapidly filter samples of water polluted with nitrite that were under pressure. R1HG and R2GH were capable of totally removing nitrites (99.5% and 100%) from volumes of nitrite solutions that were 118 mg/L that is 10 times the volumes of resins used. Additionally, when extending filtration to increasing volumes of the same nitrite solution up to 60 times the volume of resins used, the removal efficiently of R1HG decreased, and that of R2HG remained stable at over 89%. Interestingly, both the worn-out hydrogels were regenerable by 1% HCl washing, without a significant reduction in their original efficiency. There is a lack of studies in the literature reporting on novel methods to remove nitrite from water. R1HG and especially R2HG represent low-cost, up-scalable, and regenerable column-packing materials with promise for applications in the treatment of drinking water contaminated by nitrites. Contamination set off by highly toxic metal ions and dyes is a big threat to the environment and living beings. Various industries like metal plating, mining, pesticides, battery manufacturing, and dyeing release metal ions and toxic dyes directly into the water. It is necessary to remove these toxic substances from the environment. Molecular imprinting technology (MIT) got a lot of attention in the last two decades because of several advantages over conventional adsorption technologies. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are compatible with natural antibodies having the highest selectivity due to specific recognition sites for the template molecules. Selectivity is the major advantage of MIP, any targeted heavy metal ions and dyes can be separated efficiently. Various polymerization procedures can be used for the MIP preparation started by self-assembled monomers surrounding the molecules of the template because of the “monomer functional groups and template” interchange. Various studies have been made for the removal of metal ions and dyes from water and excellent results have been attained. Continuous research developments are being done for real applications of MIPs to remove toxic environmental substances that are not only harmful to humans and other organisms but also disturb the ecological balance. This review represents the development of current MIPs, advantages as well as disadvantages exhibited from various angles to complete a roadmap towards industrial and commercial use of MIPs. Deep eutectic systems (DES) have shown increasing popularity in last decade; however, the number of studies on the potential toxicity towards living organisms remains scarce. These studies are of the utmost importance to infer on the claimed non-toxicity and biocompatibility of DES. Most articles published, at this moment, only evaluate the toxicity towards a cell model or in different strains of bacteria. For this purpose, in this work, the effect of two DES (betaine:sorbitol:water 1:1:3 and betaine:glycerol 1:2) and their individual components were evaluated at different concentrations after administered via intraperitoneal injection in zebrafish (Danio rerio). The total antioxidant capacity, lipoperoxidation, and the activity of various enzymes that work in different antioxidant pathways (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase) were assessed. The results show no significant toxicity within the tested concentrations: up to 5000 µM and 3000 µM, for the assays using the system betaine:sorbitol:water 1:1:3 and for betaine:glycerol 1:2, respectively. The toxicity of individual components was studied up to 1000 µM. Based on the encouraging results that have been obtained, it is safe to conclude that these two deep eutectic systems can be used as the new class of environmentally friendly solvents. Pollution of the aquatic environment by microplastics (MPs) is one of the most serious environmental issues worldwide and has raised many concerns about their availability and hazards for aquatic biota. In addition, fish is an important source of protein for humans, hence, the accumulation, and toxic effects of the MPs in fish deserve special attention. This study aims to examine the ingestion, tissue accumulation and toxic effects of polyvinyl chloride microplastics (PVC-MPs) in juvenile common carp. Fluorescent-tagged PVC-MPs were found in various tissues of fish only after 4-5 days of exposure. The size of MPs showed a significant role in acute toxicity and mortality due to PVC-MPs. 100% mortality were observed after 7 and 10 days exposures to 1000 and 100 µg L-1 class A-PVC-MPs (100>µm) respectively, while 1000 µg L-1 of class A-PVC-MPs (300-1000 µm) killed only 16.6% of fish after ten days. Different grades of tissue damage were found in the gills, gut, and liver of fish in proportion to size, time, and concentration of PVC-MPs. Epithelial detachment, thinning of the bowel wall, and lesions of villi in the gastric wall were the dominant damages in the gastrointestinal tract. Gills also were affected in the form of necrosis, adhesion, and partial fusion of secondary lamellae. Hepatic damages (cellular necrosis and infiltration) were found only due to exposure of fish to class A-PVC-MPs. Altogether, these findings suggest that common carp intake significant levels of environmental microplastics (intentionally or accidentally), which seriously affect fish health and raise significant concerns about marine ecosystem health and seafood safety due to microplastic pollution.

Micro/nanoplastics (MPs/NPs) are a growing threat to environmental health as these particles are dispersed to remote locations. However, the migration process of NPs differs from MPs due to their differences in sizes and physicochemical properties, thereby inducing different environmental behaviours and fates. While MPs provide surfaces to host microorganisms to form a plastisphere, NPs are smaller than microorganisms, which are often encapsulated by protein or organic matter to form unique eco-corona. Both plastisphere and eco-corona alter the physiochemical property of MPs/NPs, thereby changing their environmental toxicity. To fully understand the toxicity of MPs/NPs after forming plastisphere or eco-corona, this review aims to evaluate the roles and toxicities of MPs/NPs in the environment. Specifically, this review discusses the formation of plastisphere on MPs and eco-corona on NPs, summarizes the biochemical mechanisms of toxicity of MPs/NPs, and assesses their potential health threats to humans. Finally, perspectives are provided to better manage plastic pollution to protect the environment and human health.

Heavy metals in soils represent a threat to the environment, food safety, as well as human and animal health. The bioaccumulation of these elements in plants might enhance medium- and long-term adverse health risk promoting genetic alterations that lead to dermal, gastrointestinal, circulatory, renal, and brain disorders. The present study aimed to determine the bioaccumulation potential and cytogenotoxic effect of Equisetum hyemale extracts. E. hyemale seedlings were divided into two groups: exposed group (plants cultivated in soil with heavy metals solution) and control (plants cultivated in soil with distilled water). Heavy metals were quantified in the cultivation soils (control and exposed) and extracts (ethanolic and infusion) of vegetative parts from E. hyemale cultivated in both soils. Root length and cytogenotoxic effect were determined utilizing Allium cepa bioassay. Data demonstrated that Equisetum hyemale present the ability to absorb and bioaccumulate different heavy metals including lead, copper, cobalt manganese, zinc, iron and chromium. Given this property E. hyemale may be considered a reliable bioindicator to assess cytogenotoxicity of certain substances that exert adverse risks to environment and human and animal health. Studies on oxidative stress physiology on molluscs to monitor the aquatic environment, influenced by pollutants and stressors are very limited in general and in Indian apple snails, P. globosa in particular. The main focus of the present study was to establish the baseline data on a redox regulatory system in P. globosa sampled across the Indian subcontinent. Snails were sampled from different zones of India in three seasons (rainy, summer and winter) and the redox regulatory system (levels of antioxidant enzyme activities and small redox regulatory molecules) and oxidative stress indicator (lipid peroxidation) were analyzed. The observed elevated lipid peroxidation level in the summer season accompanied with elevated pH, salinity and temperature indicates induction of stress. In the summer season, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione reductase (GR) enzymes were augmented, whereas the level of the free -SH group and the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) were found to be increased. Similarly, correlation analysis between the antioxidant system and aquatic parameters revealed that SOD, CAT and GR were influenced by pH as well as salinity, whereas CAT was strongly correlated with temperature. Collectively, our data indicate the use of P. globosa as a model organism to monitor and access the freshwater environment by determining the redox regulatory status of this animal. Banana Fusarium wilt is one of the most serious diseases that restricts the banana industry. How to achieve efficient, low toxicity, and long-term inhibition of pathogenic fungal spores (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense , race 4, Foc4) that grow in soil has become a challenge in the field of chemical control of plant diseases in recent years. Based on the special antimicrobial mechanism of guanidine salts, which can effectively inhibit microbes by forming transmembrane stomata on the plasma membrane, we were inspired to introduce hydrophilic guanidine salts to hydrophobic PDMS chains to potentially balance high antimicrobial activity and low environmental toxicity. In this work, a series of novel amphiphilic polysiloxane graft guanidine salts (PDMS- g -GH) were synthesized based on our previous works, i.e., polysiloxane graft primary amine salts (PDMS- g -AH), in which the primary amine salt groups were converted to guanidine salt groups. The molecular weight of the polymer, the grafting density of guanidine salts, the distribution of guanidine salt units on the main chain (random or block), the in vitro antifungal activities and the anti-Foc4 activities in soil, the adsorption characteristics in soil, and the environmental toxicity after soil adsorption were systematically studied. The results confirmed that compared with PDMS- g -AH, PDMS- g -GH showed stronger antifungal activity against Foc4 and long-term antifungal activity against Foc4 in soil, but its environmental toxicity was significantly reduced. Nanobodies (Nbs) are known as camelid single-domain fragments or variable heavy chain antibodies (VHH) that in vitro recognize the antigens (Ag) similar to full-size antibodies (Abs) and in vivo allow immunoreactions with biomolecule cavities inaccessible to conventional Abs. Currently, Nbs are widely used for clinical treatments due to their remarkably improved performance, ease of production, thermal robustness, superior physical and chemical properties. Interestingly, Nbs are also very promising bioreceptors for future rapid and portable immunoassays, compared to those using unstable full-size antibodies. For all these reasons, Nbs are excellent candidates in ecological risk assessments and advanced medicine, enabling the development of ultrasensitive biosensing platforms. In this review, immobilization strategies of Nbs on conductive supports for enhanced electrochemical immune detection of food contaminants (Fcont) and human biomarkers (Hbio) are discussed. In the case of Fcont, the direct competitive immunoassay detection using coating antigen solid surface is the most commonly used approach for efficient Nbs capture which was characterized with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) when the signal decays for increasing concentrations of free antigen prepared in aqueous solutions. In contrast, for the Hbio investigations on thiolated gold electrodes, increases in amperometric and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) signals were recorded, with increases in the antigen concentrations prepared in PBS or spiked real human samples.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) are emerging materials with fantastic properties and wide applications. The release of metal ions from MOF materials is usually regarded as the origin of soluble MOF toxicity. However, whether the stable MOF particulates would induce environmental hazards is not clear. Herein, we aimed to reveal the particulate toxicity of MOF materials using the insoluble UiO-66 as the representative MOF and Phanerochaete chrysosporium as the model microorganism. UiO-66 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by solvothermal method and their diameter was 68.4 ± 8.5 nm. UiO-66 NPs were stable in the culture system and the dissolution rate of 500 mg/L group was 0.26% after 14 d incubation. UiO-66 NPs did not affect the fungus growth according to the fresh weight increases and unchanged dry weights. Fungus mycelia kept even at concentrations up to 500 mg/L. Ultrastructural observation showed that UiO-66 NPs did not enter the fungal cells, but slightly destroyed the cell wall. UiO-66 NPs inhibited the laccase activity and promoted the activity of manganese peroxidase. The overall impact on the decomposition activity of P. chrysosporium was low in dye coloration test and sawdust degradation assay. Meaningful oxidative stress was aroused by UiO-66 NPs, as indicated by the decreases of catalase, glutathione, and total superoxide dismutase, and the increases of H2O2. Our results collectively suggested that the MOF particulates could induce mild mechanical damage to fungi and the toxicity was low comparing to other instable MOF materials.

Nanotechnology introduces revolutionary approaches for agriculture in the form of nano-based pesticides, fertilizers, sensors, weed-controlling agents, enhanced seed germination materials, etc. Even though metal-nanoparticles (NPs) have shown their potential to improve crop yield, the mode of action at the cellular level and fate in the human body and the environment are not well understood yet. Several metal-nanoparticles have been studied extensively by researchers for their active role in enhancing the rate of seed germination and crop quality augmentation which may happen due to several mechanisms such as increased porosity in nano-primed seeds inducing up-regulation of the expression of aquaporin and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) genes involved in water uptake, improving the root dehydrogenase activity to enhance the water absorption capability, etc. However, researchers have also demonstrated and reported the possible toxicity of NPs in the environment due to their agricultural practices. But the fate of NPs and their environmental impact are still unclear and largely vary based on several factors such as the size of NPs, coating material, mode of discharge and locations, etc. This review thoroughly focuses on the mode of action of various NPs in seed germination and accumulation, translocation through cells, and potential environmental and health risks. Simple Summary: Drugs released into the aquatic environment create serious problems for the organisms that live there. For this reason, the present study investigates the in vitro effects of the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole, widely found in wastewater, on the fertilization and development of the Arbacia lixula sea urchin. The results showed a significant reduction in the percentage of fertilized oocytes at the highest drug concentrations, together with an increase in anomalies and delays in the development of the embryo. Therefore, the data obtained suggest urgent intervention on the release of these drugs in order to prevent important alterations in the species' development and to preserve biodiversity. To date, drugs released into the aquatic environment are a real problem, and among antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole is the one most widely found in wastewater; thus, the evaluation of its toxicity on marine organisms is very important. This study, for the first time, investigates the in vitro effects of 4 concentrations of sulfamethoxazole (0.05 mg/L, 0.5 mg/L, 5 mg/L, 50 mg/L) on the fertilization and development of the sea urchin Arbacia lixula. The gametes were exposed to drugs in three different stages: simultaneously with, prior to, and post-fertilization. The results show a significant reduction in the percentage of fertilized oocytes at the highest drug concentrations. Moreover, an increase in anomalies and delays in embryo development following the treatment with the drug was demonstrated. Therefore, the data suggest that this antibiotic can alter the development of marine organisms, making it urgent to act to reduce their release and to determine the concentration range with the greatest impact. Benzalkonium chloride is a concern because of its widespread use combined with environmental impacts. It has been found throughout the built and natural environment in wastewater influent, effluent, biosolids, surface water and groundwater. Once benzalkonium chloride enters the environment, it can be lethal to aquatic organisms and invoke antimicrobial resistance. Resistance is a particular concern in the food industry, where benzalkonium chloride is used as a disinfectant. Disinfectants are used liberally against biofilms, which require far higher lethal concentrations than planktonic cells and create resistance reservoirs. While the use of benzalkonium chloride in hospitals is justified with careful use, placing it in consumer products such as hand wash is only increasing the likelihood of environmental release. Metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) such as TiO2 and ZnO have been engineered for various industrial manufacturing processes. Among MONPs, environmental exposure to ZnO nanoparticles may cause health concerns about their significant toxicity. This leads to a desire of efficient methods for their removal in the aqueous environment with facile detection. In this work, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was chosen to treat aqueous suspensions containing ZnO and other metal oxide nanoparticles. APTES first formed a thin surface layer on ZnO nanoparticles and continued in branching polymerization to link up with adjacent APTES-ZnO nanoparticles. Eventually, a web-like sediment settled down onto the bottom and was confirmed to be APTES-ZnO conjugation by FT-IR. A high removal efficiency over 99 % w of ZnO nanoparticles in aqueous suspension was attained using 2.0 % by volume of APTES. The sedimentation was selective towards ZnO nanoparticles due to electrostatic interaction with ZnO to form a sturdy condensation coagulate. Other MONPs (Al2O3, CaO, CeO2, CuO and TiO2) did not form any web-like sediment with APTES but could co-precipitate with the ZnO nanoparticles. Meso-tetra(carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP) could be added as an indicator to co-precipitate with the sediment, with its color changing from red purple to bright green during the formation of APTES-TCPP-ZnO sediment. In this article, we have proposed a tri-trophic food chain model with omnivory nature in top-predator. We have investigated the prey-predator system by incorporating prey refuge and environmental toxicity. The predator population is divided into two categories: middle predator and top predator. The dynamic behavior of the proposed system is investigated by analyzing the existence and stability conditions of the equilibrium points. The system experiences transcritical bifurcation and Hopf bifurcation with respect to the mortality rates of the predator population as the bifurcation parameters. The numerical simulations are carried out to substantiate our analytical findings. The chaotic behavior is analyzed numerically. In this paper, we dedicate ourselves to investigate the complex dynamics of the system for maintaining the coexistence of the population which is important for the ecological balance in the environment. Current toxicity screening approaches to evaluate the vast number of environmental chemicals that require assessment are hampered due to their significant costs, time requirements, and reliance on live animal testing. The aim of the present study was to develop an adverse outcome pathway (AOP)-anchored transcriptome analysis (AATA) catalogue to expedite the discovery of environmental toxicants. 437 AOPs from the AOPwiki (https://aopwiki.org/) and 2280 transcriptomics data sets from NCBI Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) and EMBL-EBI ArrayExpress (AE) repositories were comprehensively reviewed and analyzed. By using the differentially expressed molecular key event (mKE) genes as connection nodes, we created a large-scale environmental substance─target gene (mKE)─predicted adverse outcomes (SGAs) network that included 78 substances, 1099 genes, and 354 adverse outcomes (AOs). To validate the reliability of the network, comprehensive literature verification was conducted. We demonstrated that 164 of the 354 AOs identified have been previously characterized in the literature. The results for 136 of these AOs were consistent with the predictions of the AATA catalogue, representing an accuracy rate of 82.9%. Besides, distinct patterns in molecular KEs and AOs among categories of substances, such as biocides and metals, were demonstrated. Some representative substances, including atrazine and copper, pose significant risks to fish at various levels of biological organization. Moreover, experimental verification of the AATA predictions was conducted, including exposures of zebrafish to perfluorooctanesulfonate, cresyl diphenyl phosphate, and lanthanum. Results demonstrated consistency with predictions of the AATA catalogue, with an accuracy rate of 92.3%. Collectively, the present findings support the AATA catalogue as an efficient and promising platform for identifying environmental toxicants to fish and thereby provide novel insights into the understanding of potential risks of environmental contaminants.
