Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the touchstone for millennials when looking at the means for making their world a better place. Higher education's focus on CSR has allowed millennials to focus their decision-making using a CSR/stakeholder approach to financial management decisions. Millennials' support for a CSR/stakeholder approach has grown as they have been completing college. The CSR/stakeholder approach has increased partly due to social awareness created by curricula that highlights areas of social and environmental inequality. This CSR/stakeholder approach has recently emerged as a bona fide strategic management option globally. This paper extends CSR research by evaluating millennial financial decisions and the resulting competitive company performance in a widely used business simulation. Proactive university equality initiatives, resulting in curriculum changes, reinforce millennials' ethos of social and environmental sustainability. The proximate cause of climate change is the emission of greenhouse gases to the planetary atmosphere from the combustion of fossil fuels. Those emissions are rising because coal, oil, and gas provide the primary motive force for economic activity. The constant and concerted push by political leaders around the world for an ever-larger world economy, and for ever-faster rates of economic growth, exacerbates this problem. Given the looming threat of a changing climate, what explains this continuing preference for growth? Practical benefits and political expedience are parts of the story, but this essay points to the normative domain. It identifies a moral laxity shared by political leaders which fosters a preference for growth over other more ethically demanding but environmentally sustainable ways to enable human betterment. In turn, that laxity is shown to arise from the uncritical appropriation of an irresponsible notion of freedom from constraint which is deployed as justification for the growth paradigm. The authors offer compelling evidence that, in an effort to avoid regulatory and societal claims that they are disproportionately harming minority and ethnic populations, businesses operating inside environmental justice communities tend to adopt an environmental management system (EMS). The article probes whether industries actually improve the environment as a consequence of EMS adoption or whether such systems are simply used to avoid greater governmental scrutiny without necessarily reducing overall environmental risks.

Abstract

This article proposes that improved 'translation' of policy goals and actions into issues relevant to local stakeholders on the ground, may play an important role in stakeholders' understanding and consequent acceptance of the principles of sustainability and adaptation. In turn, the relevance of national or other higher level goals to on-the-ground stakeholders could be improved through communication of the concerns of stakeholders to policymakers. The subjective well-being concept is proposed as having the potential to improve such a communication. The article first provides an overview of key concepts in vulnerability and adaptation literature. Human well-being concept is then introduced and the results of an empirical study conducted in the Great Barrier Reef region of Australia are presented, providing evidence of factors perceived by respondents as most important to their well-being.
