This capstone project tells the untold story of marine diamond mining, tracing its origins from the shores of Namibia to the fjords of Greenland. Despite the stark differences between these two locales, they share striking similarities in diamond potential. In Namibia, marine diamond mining flourished prior to the country's independence and the establishment of international mining laws, setting a precedent for potential challenges in Greenland's current political landscape. Through in-depth research, stakeholder interviews, and media production, this project fosters an informed storyline for a full-length documentary film. The capstone deliverables encompass a film treatment, budget, film plan, concise trailer, and transcribed interviews, strategically crafted towards securing future support of the project. The outcome of such seeking to advocate for greater transparency in the diamond industry and policies that prioritize both economic development and environmental integrity. Purpose: This study aims to identify students' perceptions of the importance and objectives of sustainability and business ethics education, considering contextual factors (ethics-friendly environments) and including the social desirability (SD) bias to strengthen data robustness and assess response truthfulness. Design/methodology/approach: A survey was administered to 170 business students at an Icelandic university to measure their attitudes and perceptions toward sustainability and business ethics courses. Descriptive statistics, Mann–Whitney tests, χ2 tests and multivariate regression were used for the analysis. Findings: The results show no significant differences among participants, depending on individual and organizational factors. The authors did not find significant differences in gender, age or exposure to sustainability and business ethics courses concerning social desirability bias. Contextual solid factors can explain these results. Originality/value: This study expands on previous research by examining students' perceptions of sustainability and business ethics education in an "ethics-friendly environment" like Iceland, a new and fertile territory for business ethics education research. Amidst increasing polarization on climate policy, Pope Francis' exhortation Laudate Deum (October 2023) is a contribution to keep the planetary emergency up on the global agenda. In contrast with his previous encyclical Laudato si', the Pontiff unequivocally states the anthropic origin of climate change. Justifying his plea with the lack of progress of multilateralism without formal mechanisms of enforcement, the Pontiff explicitly calls for new governance arrangements and binding instruments for the enforcement of climate protection agreements. With no legal character for the Church, the document has had no strong effect in the short run. However, in line with recent pronouncements of other religious leaders, it is a vigorous moral challenge to climate scepticism and inertia, restating the engagement of religion as an agent for change in promoting climate action. In this research article, we illustrate how grassroots activists who are fighting against the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) in Southwest Virginia employ rhetorical strategies to establish environmental justice locally and globally. Our study (IRB approved) showcases how MVP activists and their rhetorical strategies of protest are reflected via technical communication on social media and public spaces via protest and art. Background: This theoretical paper offers an ecofeminist analysis and critique of a specific conception of energy. The hypothesis is that, at least in the Western context, there is a characteristic socio-economic understanding of energy as a resource and commodity for human needs and the development of human societies. This conception corresponds to a cultural understanding that is both different from and broader than the scientific notion of energy. Such a conception has become part of several narratives, including energy policy. Our research question is: does this conception of energy as a commodity and resource affect the relation between humans and nature? And if so, how? Results: Drawing on the work of Val Plumwood, and Greta Gaard, we argue that conceiving of energy as a resource and commodity for human needs and the socio-economic development of human societies reinforces and mediates the hierarchical and oppressive dualism "human-nature", thus contributing to backgrounding, excluding, incorporating, and instrumentalizing some parts of nonhuman nature as well as some human groups. Conclusions: The idea of energy as a commodity shapes public debates and policies, worsening existing environmental issues. This dominant perspective affects how people respond to environmental challenges and crises, both individually and collectively. This article aims to encourage more critical and open discussions about energy. The Islamic environmental theology (IET) that emerged in the 20th century is analyzed and two main strands are pursued: the efforts to protect the environment derived from the thinking of some Muslim scholars and activists in Europe and North America, and the discourse of Muslim theologians in Arab countries such as Egypt and Jordan that developed in the face of environmental destruction and associated problems in the societies concerned. The topic of water, i.e., the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of clean water and access to sanitation, played a particularly important initial role in the discourse in Arab countries. Jordan, for example, is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world and, since 2010, various fatwas have been seen, such as expert opinions from the General Iftaa' Department, the state authority for Islamic jurisprudence in Jordan, on the use of water. The discourse of Muslim jurists on the Sustainable Development Goals in general has developed from this. At the same time, it is obvious that the normative theology in Arab countries is more reactive than progressive concerning the challenges of climate change. This article comes to the conclusion that Islamic theology, even if it starts from the same resources of tradition, comes to form different discourses depending on the regional context. The term philosophical generation, or generations, covers one such initiative in new readings in the history of 20th century philosophy, ethics, and moral philosophy. It focuses its attention on interactions between philosophers as personalities, as teachers of philosophy, and their student-philosophers. It is interested in the interactions that shape the tradition of philosophical thinking and ethics in such unique environments as university departments, institutes of academies, scientific societies, journal editorial offices, or publishing houses. The present study provides an analysis of the existing state of the generational discourse in a historical-philosophical context starting from the 20th century. It focuses on the prospects and pitfalls of the applicability of this lens when examining Slovak philosophical and ethics work in the 20th century and today. It brings thinking about the extent to which the given approach could contribute to existing reflections of our philosophy and ethics and the effort to answer the question of our philosophical identity. Although the theoretical outlook of Holmes Rolston, III's environmental ethics is secular, there are also theological elements hidden within it. Scholarly attempts have been made to examine the religious aspects of Rolston's environmental ethics, but Rolston's eco-theology has not yet been fully discussed in the context of his own theology. In view of this research gap, this paper explores Rolston's ecological theology through examining Rolston's theological background, doctoral dissertation, and other writings. It is found that Rolston's eco-theology emphasizes the presence of God's grace in the creation and continuing creation and the details of God's providence. God does not control everything in natural history, but rather respects the autonomous choices of life and gently guides natural history upward. Taking divine grace as its core concept, Rolston's ecological theology differs drastically from the mainstream of eco-theodicy which highlights the opposition between the suffering in nature and the loving God. In Rolston's theology, the overarching grace penetrates natural and redemptive history. Rolston's distinctive contribution to ecological theology may lie in his integrating the doctrine of creation and soteriology with a consistent theme: God's total love. This study introduced the emotional factor of empathy with nature and constructed a comprehensive model comprising the value-identity-personal norm and the normative activation models to examine the formation mechanism of tourists' ecological compensation behavioural willingness (ECBW). Furthermore, it analysed the effects of biospheric values, environmental self-identity, empathy with nature, personal norms, and ascription of responsibility on ECBW via structural equation modelling. The findings show that except for the construct of biospheric values, all variables directly affect the ECBW. Environmental self-identity and empathy with nature fully mediate biospheric values and ECBW, respectively, suggesting that there is an arousal mechanism between biospheric values and ECBW. The comprehensive model in this study had a stronger predictive power in explaining ECBW than the two single models. This study revealed the formation mechanism of tourists' ECBW and regards it as a subdimension of environmentally responsible behaviour (ERB) with compensatory features that broaden the understanding of ERB. It also extends the theoretical framework of ERB research by focusing on specific natural-emotional factors. Second-generation practice theoretical research on sustainable consumption has largely overlooked the role of environmental ethics. This is likely due to associations of "ethics" with culture and symbolic understandings of consumption. This article investigates how some environmentally aware and engaged consumers actively try to cultivate ethical and sustainable practices in order to develop ways of living more sustainably. By combining a practice theoretical framework with Michel Foucault's work on ethical self-cultivation, I combine the ethical – understood as emerging in specific places and time as part of cultural formations – with processes of embodiment and ethical reflexivity to understand how environmental ethical reflexivity can play a role in the sustainable change of practices. The article argues that changing consumption practices based on changed environmental ethics requires an ongoing reflexive and bodily process of training the bodymind to embody skills and mold sensory, affective, and perceptual dispositions. This is a processual change requiring time and effort, in which research participants nevertheless experience meaning and hope as they are able to create sustainable change in their own lives and, over time and to some degree, live up to their ethical ideals. The analysis is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in two locations using audio-visual methods in participant observation and interviews with research participants who are actively engaged in changing their everyday practices. This article provides a comprehensive review of the rather intricate relationship between contemporary environmental ethics, understood as a philosophical branch, and ancient philosophy. While its primary focus is on Western philosophy, it also includes some brief yet crucial considerations about the influence of Eastern traditions of thought on environmental ethics. Aside from the introduction in the first section, the discussion is organised into three main sections. In the Reception: Ancient philosophy in environmental ethics section, I review the initial reception of ancient philosophy in contemporary environmental ethics. Next, in the Reaction: Environmental ethics in ancient philosophy scholarship section, I examine how the scholarship in AP responded to this early reception. The article explores the concept of mortality as a central theme in ecological and existential reflection.

Environmental attitude, value and awareness are widely believed to help reach the goal of cutting global food waste, but these psychological and cognitive factors are not always good predictors of wasteful behaviours. Notably, it is still unclear how the role of pro-environmental attitude (PEA) in reducing household food waste (HFW) changes with grocery shopping distance. To this end, using 7319 households survey data from China, this study investigates the moderating effect of shopping distance on the link between PEA and HFW behaviour. The results of Tobit regressions show that PEA is an important predictor of actual HFW behaviour in the absence of the constraint of shopping distance. However, the expansion of shopping distance will weaken the positive role of PEA in reducing HFW. It indicates that, due to the temporal and financial constraints generated by shopping distance, there is a certain degree of hypothetical deviation between the wasteful behaviours that individuals actually exhibit and their stated PEA. Our findings, from the perspective of the moderating effect of shopping distance, explain why some individuals deviate from their stated PEA in HFW behaviour, which provides a new insight into the generation of 'attitude–behaviour' gap. Therefore, policy interventions that merely enhancing environmental education may have limited effect on reducing food waste; instead, the promotion of citizen environmental ethics should be combined with efforts to improve the accessibility of retail infrastructures. This study contributes to the field of sustainable supply chain management by shedding light on the relationship between overdependence on supply chain partners, exploitation, and the willingness of business-to-business partner firms to focus on sustainability performance. This study further investigates how ethical culture moderates this relationship. Drawing on the resource dependency theory, the study involves developing a model and validating it using multivariate analysis among 120 dyads. The findings reveal that a business-to-business firm's overdependence on its supply chain partners can lead to it being exploited, which in turn negatively impacts its willingness to prioritize sustainability within the supply chain. Moreover, the study demonstrates that the stronger the firm's ethical culture, the weaker the effect of overdependence on exploitation, while at a lower level of the firm's ethical culture, the effect of overdependence on exploitation is stronger. The utilization of resource dependency theory unveils the potential downsides of overreliance on business-to-business supply chain partners and its consequences within the supply chain. Although organizational green culture and environmental ethics are increasingly acknowledged as crucial, few studies have comprehensively examined the interconnected relationship between green innovation and sustainable performance, particularly within manufacturing firms. As such, this study empirically examines the relationship between environmental ethics and sustainable performance through the mediating roles of green process and product innovations and the moderating role of organizational green culture on these relationships. It is grounded in stakeholder theory and a resource-based view. This study utilizes 236 valid cross-sectional data points from manufacturing firms in Turkey to test the proposed integrated theoretical model through structural equation modeling (SEM). Environmental ethics is positively associated with sustainable performance, green process innovation, and green product innovation. Green process innovation positively affects sustainable performance. Additionally, both green process and product innovations mediate the relationship between environmental ethics and sustainable performance. Moreover, organizational green culture enhances the relationship between environmental ethics and both green process innovation and green product innovation while moderating its role in sustainable performance. The findings highlight how environmental ethics, mediated by green innovation and moderated by organizational green culture, can drive sustainable performance, offering valuable insights for managers aiming to enhance sustainability initiatives in the manufacturing sector. This paper explores the intricate relationship between humans and plants from the perspective of Salish concepts, shedding light on the tradition of attributing human-desired qualities to the botanical world. Although plants possess traits that appeal to human desires, it is essential to recognize their inherent distinction from humans. Through historical utilization by Salish communities, a spiritual reciprocal bond has been established, necessitating the adherence to human-like protocols to maintain a symbiotic relationship. However, this exploration advocates against romanticizing this relationship, as it has the potential to foster internal stereotyping while leading to external discrepancies in philosophical pursuits. By carefully examining Salish practices from past to present, an emphasis is placed on the significance of comprehending and respecting the uniqueness of plant life. Through this analysis, the primary goal is to enhance our understanding of the profound connection between humans and plants while embracing the authenticity and complexity of this relationship. Appreciating the true nature of the bond can offer valuable insights into sustainable coexistence with the botanical world and contribute to fostering a more balanced and respectful relationship between humans and the natural environment. The emotions of guilt and shame have an effect on how individuals feel and behave in relation to environmental crises, yet studies of the moral potential of these emotions remain limited. From a philosophical perspective, some scholars have defended using eco-guilt and eco-shame as morally constructive emotions due to their ability to evoke more pro-environmental behaviour. Meanwhile, others have posited that there are pitfalls to these emotions, claiming that they perpetuate a problematic individualised focus, which diverts attention from the collective and structural conditions considered necessary for pro-environmental change. This paper critically examines these two differing perspectives on eco-guilt and eco-shame, applying insights from moral and political philosophy and the sociology of emotions. Through this exploration, we try to nuance the discussion concerning the moral potential of eco-guilt and eco-shame. We argue that if individuals are able to break their introspective, consumption-based loops of eco-guilt and eco-shame alleviation, the emotions may enforce an individual ethical demand to be more sustainable and foster an ethical and political pro-environmental drive. Furthermore, experiences of eco-guilt and eco-shame have the potential to spread socially and help catalyse emotional shifts within society, sparking a greater political and social pro-environmental movement. Therefore, eco-guilt and eco-shame may indeed transcend the purported introspective and individual-level focus and have the potential to influence broader collective and structural conditions and thus foster environmental change. Restoring a World Natural Heritage Site (WNHS) after a disaster to attract tourists raises multifaceted issues that concern heritage authenticity, environmental ethics, and tourists' acceptance. In the case of Jiuzhaigou post-earthquake landscape, this study analyses authenticity perceptions, attitudes, and behavioral intentions of tourists and explores environmental ethics through three perspectives. Results reveal tourists' authenticity perception affects their attitudes and behaviors towards environmental restoration. Moreover, tourists tend to recognize and support Awe for Nature (Awe-N) more than Respect for Nature (Res-N) and significant differentiation exists among potential tourists according to their environmental ethics, demographic characteristics, and behaviors. Altogether, our work presents innovative arguments on post-disaster WNHS restoration by highlighting the complexities of heritage authenticity, environmental ethics, and tourist' dynamics. In his later work, such as "The Question Concerning Technology", Martin Heidegger puts forward a critique of modern technology. Alongside this critique, Heidegger presents a kind of positive alternative through his discussion of "dwelling". I put forward a reading of Heidegger's critique of modern technology and his embrace of "dwelling". On my reading, Heidegger's thinking centers on the idea that modern technology's form of "world-disclosure" prevents human beings from encountering (and then living in light of) our own essence. In contrast, he takes "dwelling" to allow us to do that. When humans dwell, they also live in such a way as to (purportedly) allow other things (e.g. rivers) to exist in accordance with their own essence. I argue that, for Heidegger, the (purported) truth that humans should live in accord with our own essence is explanatorily prior to the (purported) truth that humans should let other things exist in accordance with their own essence. Following this interpretative argument, I reflect on some of the promises of this position that I attribute to Heidegger, along with some of the most pressing challenges facing those who might want to further develop it. Green technology innovation is a vital strategic driver for the sustainable development of an organization and is pitched toward energy conservation, pollution mitigation, and waste recycling. This study investigates the influence of the green technology orientation of the top management on a hotel's green competitive advantage. It considers the effects of green human capital, green structural capital, and green relational capital. It adopts a partial least square structural equation model (PLS-SEM) to test hypotheses using 380 data samples from top employees of hotels in the USA. The statistical results show that corporate environmental ethics, stakeholder pressure, and market demand for green processes positively affect green technology involvement. Furthermore, findings of green human and structural capital positively affect green competitive advantage. The study sheds light on the significance of green competitive advantage in the hotel industry while providing novel perspectives on the deficiencies and vulnerabilities of the competitive hotel business. These novels depict conflict between McGee's lifestyle and his purported environmentalism between a man who expresses the relevance of preserving the natural world and an individualist whose actions and lifestyle often exploit the very place that he supposedly reveres. Through close analysis, the essay examines how Simak integrates ethical considerations into his portrayal of the ecosphere and his characters' responses to it, emphasizing the intrinsic value of all beings. Additionally, it explores Simak's anti-anthropocentrism and alignment with ecofeminism, underscoring his preference for non-human entities. Contemporary Western alternatives to anthropocentrism – such as sentientism or biocentrism – rely on the scope of human knowledge exceeding its realistic limitations. As a corollary, although these models continue to be helpful in discerning ethical conduct, additional resources are going to be required. Initially arguing from within a representationalist paradigm, this paper shows that besides our inability reliably to assess the capacities of non-human species, we have also yet to learn what other factors, besides capacity, may be relevant to a non-human’s moral considerability. Subsequently arguing from within a participationalist paradigm, this paper shows that we cannot preconceive all we may be in the process of co-creating. This leaves any model grounded solely in the already existing open to finding itself incapable of relating to the new. It is in the co-creativity of the latter that a potential starting point for resolution begins to emerge: drawing upon Indigenous conceptions of performative knowledge processes in non-objectifying relationality, this paper shows dynamics of inter-species kinship, at times partially traceable through evolutionary relationship, to be a source of non-propositional learning relevant to ethical concerns.

The mere existence of refuges proved beneficial for arthropods, with over 70 % of studies reporting positive responses among these species.While insects and spiders have specific habitat requirements, humans are able to create a habitable environment for themselves. However, ecological crises for humans and arthropods are increasing, as are human populations. Therefore, refuges offer a way to address both ecological and social challenges simultaneously, enhancing biodiversity and human well-being.

The article presents and critically discusses the concept of environmental interventionism, which treats interference in the functioning of ecosystems to protect free-living animals from suffering as a general ethical obligation. The strong version of this approach postulates the need to help animals suffering from natural phenomena, and the extreme version recommends the permanent reconstruction of animal bodies using biotechnology. The dispute between proponents and opponents of this concept can be reduced to a fundamental dispute over the primacy of two sets of ethical values: the individual values of particular animals, characteristic of the animal welfare stance, and the values attached to the supra-individual manifestations of the biosphere, characteristic of the environmentalist ethic. The arguments presented in the article justify the application of the principles of environmental ethics in order to protect the biosphere against the contemporary ecological crisis and clearly result from Author’s full acceptance of the assumptions of ethical naturalism. The paper attempts to show that the arguments for the validity of interventionism are based on partially erroneous assumptions and questionable conclusions. These include: ignoring knowledge of the advanced cognitive abilities of many groups of animals and their implications for ethical obligations towards them; clinging to an archaic, individualistic vision of the functioning of the biosphere; super-naturalising the approach to individual suffering; and making an unjustified transfer between intrinsic and instrumental values ascribed to animals. By basing the hierarchy of animals and their life interests used to prioritize interventionism on the arbitrary opinions of humans, this concept is clearly anthropocentric. The article presents arguments for recognising the strong and extreme version of instrumentalism as harmful from the point of view of environmental ethics and biosphere protection. The problem of ethical obligations to plants has rarely been raised in Western traditions of thought. However, it is central to Aldo Leopold’s A Sand County Almanac, one of the key texts of modern American environmentalism. For Leopold, the effects of a civilisation on the vegetal base of the trophic pyramid are the ultimate measure of its value, and the principal failure of modern civilisation is that it blinds people to this fact. For humans to become proper citizens of the land community, they must build reciprocal relationships with other members of the community, which can be understood as relationships of resonance (H. Rosa). Crucially, this also includes plants, who are thus recognised as vegetal citizens. Leopold’s descriptions of his own relationships to the native flora, built over the course of a decade of ecological restoration work on his property in Sauk County, Wisconsin, must be viewed in this context.

Environmental ethics highlights the values and principles involved in combating environmental problems such as pollution, species and habitat loss, and climate change. The main objective of this study is to provide an overview of environmental ethics-related academic studies to highlight the main aspects and future research trends. This study is based on various studies from the national and international specialized literature. The methodology used consists of a quantitative research through a bibliometric analysis as well as the analysis of several indicators relevant to the study. The sample analyzed consists of 981 academic articles published between 1975-2023. The results indicate a clear direction toward the expansion of the research field, especially among researchers from the economic and ecological fields.

Drawing on tournament theory, we argue that when environmental goals are incorporated into the cadre evaluation system, compared to officials who are close to retirement (i.e., retiring officials), non-retiring officials may exert more effort to foster risky green innovation. Based on a sample of publicly traded firms from heavily polluting industries in China between 2008 and 2016, we hypothesize and find that confronted with severe environmental pollution, firms in provinces with non-retiring governors have higher green innovation performance than those in provinces with retiring governors. Moreover, we find that this effect is stronger for firms in provinces whose governors have higher promotion anticipation, for local state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and for politically connected firms. Our study identifies the political incentives of government officials as an important antecedent of corporate green innovation and highlights the value of establishing a "green" cadre evaluation system to promote sustainable development. Based on institutional theory, environmental regulation (ER) is considered the primary factor in stimulating green innovation (GI) in enterprises. The existing literature has extensively explored the ER-GI relationship, but conclusions are still inconsistent, which is related to neglecting the dual heterogeneity in this relationship. Hence, we divide ER into command ER (CER) and incentive ER (MER), and GI into compliant GI (CGI) and strategic GI (SGI) to address this research gap. Employing a questionnaire survey of Chinese manufacturing enterprises, we re-examined the ER-GI relationship and tried to identify the moderating effect of environmental ethics (EE). The results show that CER and MER positively affect CGI and SGI. Furthermore, under the CER, there is increased accessibility to adopting CGI. Under the MER, the likelihood of choosing SGI is higher. Moreover, we find that heterogeneous ERs are more conducive to SGI under the moderating effect of EE. This study has significantly contributed to the literature on the ER-GI relationship. Eschatological and apocalyptic patterns of thought are today prominent in environmental discourse, across multiple disciplines and media. Yet some theologians criticise these thought patterns for their role in perpetuating and even causing the environmental degradation we now witness. This article argues that the construal of salvation and the Kingdom as a future state is rooted in a misinterpretation of the Gospel, and that this error led secularised Western modernity into its endemic preoccupation with progress, acceleration, and futural, secular utopias. Reading Maximus the Confessor, an alternative view of eschatology emerges, according to which eschaton and theosis constitute one and the same event in the life of the soul, and the advent of the Kingdom is considered inseparable from the soul's transformed perception of reality as she undergoes deification. If the Kingdom resides as a potentiality within the now of all times, accessible through the metanoetic transformation of consciousness, such realisation may lead to a more ecological way of living on the Earth: one less preoccupied with the future and individual survival, and more attuned to the cyclical nature of the cosmos and time, which became displaced by Christianity's and modernity's focus on historical and linear time. This picture tells us that the crises in nature are not the crises of nature but the crises of the societal system as the socio-political system ruled by political leaders, opinion-makers, and liberal extremists. This article investigates the impact of R&D support on sustainable innovation through the mediating role of green technology transfer. Based on our analysis of data from 220 firms in Vietnam, we find the following: (1) R&D support has a positive impact on green technology transfer, (2) green technology transfer mediates the relationship between R&D support and sustainable innovation, and (3) The influence of green technology transfer on sustainable innovation is heightened in the presence of a firm's commitment to environmental ethics. These findings underline the critical role of government R&D funding in shaping sustainable innovation in emerging markets. The findings further show the crucial role of environmental commitment as a moderating factor in green technology transfer contexts. Managing the interaction between green technology transfer and a firm's commitment to environmental ethics is essential to optimize the benefits of sustainable innovation.
