1. Multi‐episodic formation of baddeleyite and zircon in polymetamorphic anorthosite and rutile‐bearing ilmenitite from the Chiapas Massif Complex, Mexico

Abstract

Massif‐type anorthosite and comagmatic associations of rutile‐bearing ilmenitite (RBI) and oxide‐apatite‐rich amphibolite (OARA) from the Chiapas Massif Complex (CMC) in southeastern Mexico display a protracted billion‐year accessory mineral record encompassing magmatic crystallization at c. 1.0 Ga to recent ductile shear deformation at c. 3.0 Ma. Multiple discrete zircon populations between these age end‐members resulted from neoformation/recrystallization during local to regional metamorphism that affected the southeastern portion of the CMC. The ubiquitous presence of relict baddeleyite (ZrO2), along with various zircon generations spatially associated with pristine to partly retrogressed Zr‐bearing igneous and metamorphic minerals (e.g., ilmenite, rutile, högbomite and garnet), suggests significant Zr diffusive re‐equilibration (exsolution) during slow cooling and mineral breakdown followed by crystallization of baddeleyite. The subsequent transformation of baddeleyite into zircon was likely driven by reaction with Si‐bearing fluids in several geochronologically identified metamorphic stages. Strikingly contrasting compositional signatures in coeval zircon from anorthosite (silicate‐dominated) and comagmatic RBI (Ti‐Fe‐oxide‐dominated) indicate a major role of fluids locally equilibrating with the rock matrix, as indicated by distinct zircon trace element and oxygen isotopic compositions. A high‐grade metamorphic event at c. 950 Ma is likely responsible for the formation of coarse‐grained rutile (~0.1–10 mm in diameter), srilankite, zircon and garnet with rutile inclusions as well as metamorphic högbomite surrounding Fe‐Mg spinel. Zr‐in‐rutile minimum temperatures suggest >730°C for this event, which may correlate to rutile‐forming granulite facies metamorphism in other Grenvillian‐aged basement rocks in Mexico and northern South America. A younger generation of baddeleyite exsolution occurred during post‐peak cooling of coarse‐grained rutile, reflected in rimward Zr depletion and formation of discontinuous baddeleyite coronas. Baddeleyite around rutile was then transformed into zircon possibly during subsequent metamorphism at c. 920 or 620 Ma, resulting from syn‐kinematic and contact metamorphism, respectively. Regional metamorphism at c. 450 and 250 Ma extensively overprinted the existing zircon population, especially during the Triassic event, as suggested by a significant presence of zircon with this age. Nearly pristine baddeleyite occurring interstitial to ilmenite yielded an isochron age of c. 232 Ma according to in situ U–Pb secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), suggesting either formation during metamorphic peak conditions or post‐peak cooling. Zircon with ages of c. 80–100 Ma in anorthosite is identified for the first time within the CMC and coincides with cooling ages of c. 100 Ma for coarse‐grained rutile. This age is similar to those of rocks occurring ~200 km further to the east in Guatemala, which are also bounded to the Polochic fault system but overprinted by eclogite facies metamorphism. A high‐pressure event in the southern CMC after 200 Ma, however, is presently unsupported. Abstract

International audience; This paper deals with the stabilization of a transport equation subject to a boundary disturbance. Our feedback design relies on the so-called strategy called active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). The unknown disturbance is estimated by Levant's differentiator and one of the feature of this differentiator is that it allows to estimate in finite-time the disturbance. We prove the existence of solutions of the closed-loop system and the global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. A numerical example is given to illustrate the efficiency of our strategy.

Abstract

(IF 1.60; Q3); International audience; Monopile foundations of offshore wind turbines modify the hydrodynamics and sediment transport at local and regional scales. The aim of this work is to assess these modifications and to parameterize them in a regional model. In the present study, this is achieved through a regional circulation model, coupled with a sediment transport module, using two approaches. One approach is to explicitly model the monopiles in the mesh as dry cells, and the other is to parameterize them by adding a drag force term to the momentum and turbulence equations. Idealised cases are run using hydrodynamical conditions and sediment grain sizes typical from the area located off Courseulles-sur-Mer (Normandy, France), where an offshore windfarm is under planning, to assess the capacity of the model to reproduce the effect of the monopile on the environment. Then, the model is applied to a real configuration on an area including the future offshore windfarm of Courseulles-sur-Mer. Four monopiles are represented in the model using both approaches, and modifications of the hydrodynamics and sediment transport are assessed over a tidal cycle. In relation Responsible Editor: Bruno Castelle Aurélie Rivier to local hydrodynamic effects, it is observed that currents increase at the side of the monopile and decrease in front of and downstream of the monopile. In relation to sediment transport effect, the results show that resuspension and erosion occur around the monopile in locations where the current speed increases due to the monopile presence, and sediments deposit downstream where the bed shear stress is lower. During the tidal cycle, wakes downstream of the monopile reach the following monopile and modify the velocity magnitude and suspended sediment concentration patterns around the second monopile.

Abstract

Heat flow is estimated at eight sites drilled during the International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 385 into the Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California. The expedition sought to understand the thermal regime of the basin and heat transfer between off-axis sills intruding the organic-rich sediments of the Guaymas Basin, and the basin floor. The distinct sedimentation rates, active tectonics, and magmatism makes the basin interesting for scientific discoveries. Results show sedimentation corrected heat flow values range 119-221 mW/m2 in the basin and 257-1003 mW/m2 at the site of a young sill intrusion, denominated Ringvent. Thermal analysis shows that heat in the Guaymas Basin is being dissipated by conduction for plate ages >0.2 Ma, whereas younger plate ages are in a state of transient cooling by both conduction and advection. Drilling sites show that Ringvent is an active sill being cooled down slowly by circulating fluids with discharge velocities 10–200 mm/yr. Possible recharge sites are located ~1 km away from the sill's border. Modeling of the heat output at Ringvent indicates a sill thickness of ~240 m. A simple order-of-magnitude model predicts that relatively small amounts of magma are needed to account for the elevated heat flow in non-volcanic, sediment-filled rifts like the central and northern Gulf of California in which heating of the upper crust is achieved via advection by sill emplacement and hydrothermal circulation. Multiple timescales of cooling control the crustal, chemical and biological evolution of the Guaymas Basin. Here we recognize at least four timescales: the time interval between intrusions (~103 yr), the thermal relaxation time of sills (~104 yr), the characteristic cooling time of the sediments (~105 yr), and the cooling of the entire crust at geologic timescales.

Abstract

International audience; Robust output tracking is addressed in this paper for a diffusion equation with Neumann boundary conditions and anti-collocated boundary input and output. The desired reference tracking is solved using the well-known flatness and Lyapunov approaches. The reference profile is obtained by solving the motion planning problem for the nominal plant. To robustify the closed-loop system in the presence of the disturbances and uncertainties, it is then augmented with PI feedback plus a discontinuous component responsible for rejecting matched disturbances with a priori known magnitude bounds. Such control law only requires the information of the system at the same boundary as the control input is located. The resulting dynamic controller globally exponentially stabilizes the error dynamics while also attenuating the influence of Lipschitz-intime external disturbances and parameter uncertainties. The proposed controller relies on a discontinuous term that however passes through an integrator, thereby minimizing the chattering effect in the plant dynamics. The performance of the closedloop system, thus designed, is illustrated in simulations under different kinds of reference trajectories in the presence of external disturbances and parameter uncertainties.

Abstract

In situ sea surface salinity (SSS) observations showed an increase >0.5 over the period 2002–2009 in the Gulf of Guinea, off the Niger Delta. Observed changes in the Niger River runoff were not consistent with this increase in SSS, but the increase was reproduced in a regional numerical simulation with climatological river runoff. The simulated mixed-layer salinity budget was used to identify the mechanisms responsible for the increase. When comparing the period 2002–2009 with the period 1993–2001, significant changes in the salt budget were identified. The increase in SSS in the more recent period appeared to be driven by changes in the atmospheric freshwater flux, mainly attributed to a regional decrease in precipitation. Abstract

International audience; The hermaphrodite Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas displays a high energy allocation to reproduction. We studied the expression of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) during gametogenesis in the gonad and characterized the mRNA sequences of the AMPK subunits: the AMPK alpha mRNA sequence was previously characterized; we identified AMPK beta, AMPK gamma, and mRNAs of putative AMPK-related targets following bioinformatics mining on existing genomic resources. We analyzed the mRNA expression of the AMPK alpha, beta, and gamma subunits in the gonads of male and female oysters through a reproductive cycle, and we quantified the mRNA expression of genes belonging to fatty acid and glucose metabolism. AMPK alpha mRNA levels were more abundant in males at the first stage of gametogenesis, when mitotic activity and the differentiation of germinal cells occur, and were always more abundant in males than in females. Some targets of fatty acid and glucose metabolism appeared to be correlated with the expression of AMPK subunits at the mRNA level. We then analyzed the sex-specific AMPK activity by measuring the phosphorylation of the catalytic AMPK alpha protein and its expression at the protein level. Both the amount of AMPK alpha protein and threonine 172 phosphorylation appeared to be almost totally inhibited in mature female gonads at stage 3, at the time when accumulation of reserves in oocytes was promoted, while it remained at a high level in mature spermatozoa. Its activation might play a sex-dependent role in the management of energy during gametogenesis in oyster.

Abstract

International audience; Two recent results on earthquake control are summarized. A simplified model of an earthquake phenomenon is addressed by means of a cascade system of a 1D wave equation, representing the fault slip and wave propagation, and a 1D diffusion equation, representing the actuator dynamics as a diffusion process. In order to avoid a fast slip (earthquakelike behaviour), the control is designed to follow a slow reference. The control strategies are presented separately for both Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). For the wave PDE, a homogeneous boundary tracking control is developed to achieve exponential Input to State Stability (eISS) of the error closedloop dynamics. For the diffusion PDE, Proportional Integral (PI) and a discontinuous integral term are coupled to exponentially stabilize the error origin despite model uncertainties and perturbations. Simulations are additionally conducted to support the robustness and stability properties of the proposed control algorithms, by separately, obtaining critical remarks that will lead to the design of the single control for the cascade system in a future stage.

Abstract

The 40Ar/39Ar dating method is among the most versatile of geochronometers, having the potential to date a broad variety of K-bearing materials spanning from the time of Earth’s formation into the historical realm. Measurements using modern noble-gas mass spectrometers are now producing 40Ar/39Ar dates with analytical uncertainties of ~0.1%, thereby providing precise time constraints for a wide range of geologic and extraterrestrial processes. Analyses of increasingly smaller subsamples have revealed age dispersion in many materials, including some minerals used as neutron fluence monitors. Accordingly, interpretive strategies are evolving to address observed dispersion in dates from a single sample. Moreover, inferring a geologically meaningful “age” from a measured “date” or set of dates is dependent on the geological problem being addressed and the salient assumptions associated with each set of data. We highlight requirements for collateral information that will better constrain the interpretation of 40Ar/39Ar data sets, including those associated with single-crystal fusion analyses, incremental heating experiments, and in situ analyses of microsampled domains. To ensure the utility and viability of published results, we emphasize previous recommendations for reporting 40Ar/39Ar data and the related essential metadata, with the amendment that data conform to evolving standards of being findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) by both humans and computers. Our examples provide guidance for the presentation and interpretation of 40Ar/39Ar dates to maximize their interdisciplinary usage, reproducibility, and longevity.

Abstract

The oxygen deficient mesopelagic layer (ODL) off Peru has concentrations below 5 μmol O2 kg–1 and is delimited by a shallow upper oxycline with strong vertical gradient and a more gradual lower oxycline (lOx). Some regions show a narrow band of slightly increased oxygen concentrations within the ODL, an intermediate oxygen layer (iO2). CTD, oxygen and lowered Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (LADCP, 300 kHz) profiles were taken on the shelf edge and outside down to mostly 2000 m. We evaluate here the acoustic volume backscatter strength of the LADCP signal representing organisms of about 5 mm size. Dominant features of the backscatter profiles were a minimum backscatter strength within the ODL, and just below the lOx a marked backscatter increase reaching a maximum at less than 3.0 μmol O2 kg–1. Below this maximum, the acoustic backscatter strength gradually decreased down to 1000 m below the lOx. The backscatter strength also increased at the iO2 in parallel to the oxygen concentration perturbations marking the iO2. These stable backscatter features were independent of the time of day and the organisms represented by the backscatter had to be adapted to live in this microaerobic environment. During daylight, these stable structures were overlapped by migrating backscatter peaks. Outstanding features of the stable backscatter were that at very low oxygen concentrations, the volume backscatter was linearly related to the oxygen concentration, reaching half peak maximum at less than 2.0 μmol O2 kg–1 below the lOx, and the depth-integrated backscatter of the peak below the lOx was higher than the integral above the Ox. Both features suggest that sufficient organic material produced at the surface reaches to below the ODL to sustain the major fraction of the volume backscatter-producing organisms in the water column. These organisms are adapted to the microaerobic environment so they can position themselves close to the lower oxycline to take advantage of the organic particles sinking out of the ODL.

Abstract

International audience; A comprehensive analysis of the wavefield evolution under accelerated wind conditions provides an essential contribution to understanding the wind-wave generation process. A set of experiments was carried out in a large wind-wave facility where it is possible to reproduce high wind speed conditions to study the wind acceleration effect in the wind-wave development. The facility was equipped with high-frequency sampling devices that provide accurate air turbulence and water surface displacement measurements. From this deployment, it was possible to describe the evolution of the wave characteristics under different magnitudes of constant wind acceleration in detail. This study analyzes the wind acceleration effect in the early stages of wind-wave generation and evolution. The increase of spectrum energy saturation level and the downshift of the peak frequency are processes associated with the spectral shape evolution under low acceleration wind conditions. Under high wind acceleration conditions, the spectral shape did not vary with wind speed and fetch. Despite under low acceleration wind conditions, the wavefield is more developed than under high acceleration wind conditions; there was no direct relation between wind acceleration and the wavefield efficiency to grow. Besides, during these early instants, it was observed that a more developed wave field, associated with low acceleration wind conditions, could slow down the increase of drag coefficient with wind speed.

International audience; Three cubic-meters of CO2-saturated water was injected into a subsurface fractured aquifer in a post-mined area, using a push-pull test protocol. Groundwater samples were collected before and after CO2-injection to quantify geochemical changes. CO2-injection initially reduced the pH of water from 7.3 to 5.7, led to the enrichment of major ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, and alkalinity), and dissolved trace metals (including Fe, Mn, As, and Zn) in the groundwater. Rare earth elements (REE) and yttrium concentrations were also measured in these samples before and after CO2 perturbation, to evaluate their behavior. An enrichment of total Y plus REE (REY) occurred. REY fractionation was observed with higher heavy REE (HREE) enrichment compared to light REE (LREE), and significant variations in La/Yb and Y/Ho ratios were observed following CO2 perturbation. Enrichment by a factor of three was observed for Y, Lu, and Tm, and by nearly one order of magnitude for Dy and Yb. A geochemical model was used to evaluate the amount of REE aqueous ions complexed throughout the experiment. Modeling of the results showed that speciation of dissolved REE with carbonate, along with desorption from iron oxyhydroxide surface were the main factors controlling REE behavior. This study increases an understanding of dissolved REE behavior in the environment, and the potential use for applying iron oxides for REE recovery from mine drainages. Furthermore, the description of REE fractionation patterns may assist in surveying CO2 geological storage sites, surveying underground waste disposal sites, and for understanding the formation of ore deposits and fluid inclusions in geological formations.

International audience; In this contribution, we numerically demonstrate the generation of plasmonic transparency windows in the transmission spectrum of an integrated metaphotonic device. The hybrid photonic–plasmonic structure consists of two rectangular-shaped gold nanoparticles fully embedded in the core of a multimode dielectric optical waveguide, with their major axis aligned to the electric field lines of transverse electric guided modes. We show that these transparencies arise from different phenomena depending on the symmetry of the guided modes. For the TE0 mode, the quadrupolar and dipolar plasmonic resonances of the nanoparticles are weakly coupled, and the transparency window is due to the plasmonic analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency. For the TE1 mode, the quadrupolar and dipolar resonances of the nanoparticles are strongly coupled, and the transparency is originated from the classical analogue of the Autler–Townes effect. This analysis contributes to the understanding of plasmonic transparency windows, opening new perspectives in the design of on-chip devices for optical communications, sensing, and signal filtering applications.

Abstract

Inbreeding, the mating between genetically related individuals, often results in reduced survival and fecundity of offspring, relative to outcrossing. Yet, high inbreeding rates are commonly observed in seaweeds, suggesting compensatory reproductive traits may affect the costs and benefits of the mating system. We experimentally manipulated inbreeding levels in controlled crossing experiments, using gametophytes from 19 populations of Macrocystis pyrifera along its Eastern Pacific coastal distribution (EPC). The objective was to investigate the effects of male-female kinship on female fecundity and fertility, to estimate inbreeding depression in the F1 progeny, and to assess the variability of these effects among different regions and habitats of the EPC. Results revealed that the presence and kinship of males had a significant effect on fecundity and fertility of female gametophytes. Females left alone or in the presence of sibling males express the highest gametophyte size, number, and size of oogonia, suggesting they were able to sense the presence and the identity of their mates before gamete contact. The opposite trend was observed for the production of embryos per female gametes, indicating higher costs of selfing and parthenogenesis than outcrossing on fertility. However, the increased fecundity compensated for the reduced fertility, leading to a stable overall reproductive output. Inbreeding also affected morphological traits of juvenile sporophytes, but not their heatwave tolerance. The male-female kinship effect was stronger in high-latitude populations, suggesting that females from low-latitude marginal populations might have evolved to mate with any male gamete to guarantee reproductive success. The Solar Orbiter spacecraft will be equipped with a wide range of remote-sensing (RS) and in situ (IS) instruments to record novel and unprecedented measurements of the solar atmosphere and the inner heliosphere. To take full advantage of these new datasets, tools and techniques must be developed to ease multi-instrument and multi-spacecraft studies. In particular the currently inaccessible low solar corona below two solar radii can only be observed remotely. Furthermore techniques must be used to retrieve coronal plasma properties in time and in three dimensional (3D) space. Solar Orbiter will run complex observation campaigns that provide interesting opportunities to maximise the likelihood of linking IS data to their source region near the Sun. Several RS instruments can be directed to specific targets situated on the solar disk just days before data acquisition. To compare IS and RS, data we must improve our understanding of how heliospheric probes magnetically connect to the solar disk. Aims. The aim of the present paper is to briefly review how the current modelling of the Sun and its atmosphere can support Solar Orbiter science. We describe the results of a community-led effort by European Space Agency's Modelling and Data Analysis Working Group (MADAWG) to develop different models, tools, and techniques deemed necessary to test different theories for the physical processes that may occur in the solar plasma. The focus here is on the large scales and little is described with regards to kinetic processes. To exploit future IS and RS data fully, many techniques have been adapted to model the evolving 3D solar magneto-plasma from the solar interior to the solar wind. A particular focus in the paper is placed on techniques that can estimate how Solar Orbiter will connect magnetically through the complex coronal magnetic fields to various photospheric and coronal features in support of spacecraft operations and future scientific studies. Methods. Recent missions such as STEREO, provided great opportunities for RS, IS, and multi-spacecraft studies. We summarise the achievements and highlight the challenges faced during these investigations, many of which motivated the Solar Orbiter mission. We present the new tools and techniques developed by the MADAWG to support the science operations and the analysis of the data from the many instruments on Solar Orbiter. Results. This article reviews current modelling and tool developments that ease the comparison of model results with RS and IS data made available by current and upcoming missions. It also describes the modelling strategy to support the science operations and subsequent exploitation of Solar Orbiter data in order to maximise the scientific output of the mission. Conclusions. The on-going community effort presented in this paper has provided new models and tools necessary to support mission operations as well as the science exploitation of the Solar Orbiter data. Abstract

A determined shape of the energy wave spectrum can be estimated from a given fetch and wind speed. Also, several studies have characterized the balance of the turbulent kinetic energy under the effect of waves and currents under constant wind conditions. However, deeper research is needed in order to characterize the wind-wave generation processes under non-stationary wind conditions. In this way, to be able to determine the uncertainty on not considering accelerated wind events in the air-sea momentum exchange estimations. Periods of accelerated winds were analyzed from experimental and field data. On one hand, several laboratory experiments were carried out in a large wind-wave facility at the Institut Pytheas (Marseille-France). Momentum fluxes were estimated from hot wire anemometry and, the free surface displacement was measured along the wave tank by resistance and capacitance wire probes. Also, the surface drift current was measured from a profiling acoustic velocimeter. During these experiments, the wind speed goes from 2 m/s to reach the maximum wind speed of 13 m/s. A constant wind acceleration characterizes each test. On the other hand, the field data were obtained from an Oceanographic and Marine Meteorology Buoy (BOMM) located in the Gulf of Mexico, from July 2018 to February 2019. The BOMM was equipped with a sonic anemometer, capacitance wires, and an inertial motion unit. Both sets of data are characterized by a high sampling rate that allows us to directly estimate the wind stress over the sea surface. Also, provide us with useful information about the evolution of the wave spectra and enable us to determine the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy. It was observed that the wind acceleration has a direct effect on the momentum transfer efficiency from the wind to the wave field and that the momentum transfer is reduced as wind acceleration increases.

Abstract

We study the local density of optical states (LDOS) for lossy dielectric substrates whose electric permittivity has a vanishing real part, approaching zero from the positive side of the real axis. A criterion for evaluating the threshold height above (below) which radiative (non-radiative) processes dominate for a dipole emitter is established. We focus on the case of a vertical dipole above the ϵ -near-zero (ENZ) substrate and show that, in the lossless case, complete LDOS cancellation originates from radiative modes in its near field. We evaluate the performance of commercially available ENZ materials and quantify the limits of such cancellation effects with the intrinsic losses of the substrate.

Abstract

We present an experimental and numerical study of the optical properties of nanofabricated samples with layered dielectric structures. The samples, which contain periodic arrays of silicon disks over a flat layer of silicon dioxide on a silicon substrate, present diffraction and thin film interference effects. Well-defined circular fringes that modulate the intensity of the diffraction orders are observed in the far-field angular distribution of scattered light. We also find that although the angle of incidence modulates the intensity of the observed circular ring patterns, it has little or no effect on their angular position. The problem is modeled theoretically through numerical calculations based on a Rayleigh method.

Abstract

An experimental and theoretical study of the scattering and diffraction properties of nanopatterned dielectric structures is presented. The samples consist of periodic arrays of silicon disks over a flat layer of silicon dioxide on a silicon substrate. The samples produce far-field scattering patterns that display a series of well-defined circular fringes that modulate the intensity of the diffraction orders. Simple models of the physical mechanisms that give rise to the observed phenomena are proposed. Measurements of the angular scattering distribution produced by the samples are presented and compared them with the results of numerical calculations.

Abstract

International audience; Linear proportional ISS synthesis of parabolic systems is developed within the practical framework of in-domain embedded sensing and actuation. The underlying system is affected by external disturbances and it is governed by a non-homogeneous reaction-diffusion PDE with a priori unknown spatially varying parameters. The present investigation focuses on practically motivated sampled-in-space sensing and actuation. A finite number of available sensing and actuating devices are assumed to be located along the one-dimensional spatial domain of interest. Tuning of the controller gains is then constructively developed by means of the Lyapunov approach to achieve a desired attenuation level for external distributed disturbances, affecting the system in question. Dual observer design is additionally developed within the present framework. Theoretical results are finally supported by simulations.

Abstract

International audience; An extensive research has led to a general understanding of uncertainty issues in different fields ranging from computational biology to decision making in economics. However, a study of uncertainty on large scale computing systems and cloud computing systems is limited. Most of works examine uncertainty phenomena in users’ perceptions of the qualities, intentions and actions of cloud providers. In this paper, we discuss the role of uncertainty in the resource and service provisioning, privacy, etc. especially, in the presence of the risks of confidentiality, integrity, and availability. We review sources of uncertainty, and fundamental approaches for scheduling under uncertainty. We also discuss potentials of these approaches, and address methods for mitigating the risks of confidentiality, integrity, and availability associated with the loss of information, denial of access for a long time, and information leakage.

Abstract

International audience; Developing a single photon source in the near infrared spectrum for optical fibre communications implies the control of the spontaneous emission of quantum dots. In this paper we show that the fluorescence lifetime of lead sulphide quantum dots can be drastically decreased due to the presence of plasmonic nanostructures specially designed to confine the electromagnetic field to which the emitted photons could decay at λ = 1550nm. To demonstrate this, we first measured the fluorescence lifetime of colloidal quantum dots in toluene solution and took this as a reference measurement. Then, we compared this value with the fluorescence lifetime of quantum dots in two different plasmonic nanostructures. The measurement of lifetime was made using the Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting technique. We obtained for the quantum dots in solution a fluorescence lifetime of 0.98084μs and for the quantum dots in the nanostructures, fluorescence lifetimes of 0.06227μs and 0.11789μs. We also numerically calculated the distribution of the electromagnetic field near the plasmonic nanostructures. These results demonstrate that the plasmonic nanostructures modified the fluorescence lifetime of the quantum dots, and that these plasmonic nanostructures with the lead sulphide quantum dots could work as a single photon source that could be integrated in a photonic circuit for infrared optical fibre communications.

The Tropical Atlantic is facing a massive proliferation of Sargassum since 2011, with severe environmental and socioeconomic impacts. As a contribution to this proliferation, an increase in nutrient inputs from the tropical rivers, in response to climate and land use changes or increasing urbanization, has been often suggested and widely reported in the scientific and public literature. Here we discuss whether changes in river nutrient inputs could contribute to Sargassum proliferation in the recent years or drive its seasonal cycle. Using long-term in situ and satellite measurements of discharge, dissolved and particulate nutrients of the three world largest rivers (Amazon, Orinoco, Congo), we do not find clear evidences that nutrient fluxes may have massively increased over the last 15 years. Moreover, focusing on year 2017, we estimate that along the year only 10% of the Sargassum biomass occurred in regions under river plume influence. While deforestation and pollution are a reality of great concern, our results corroborate recent findings that hydrological changes are not the first order drivers of Sargassum proliferation. Besides, satellite observations suggest that the major Atlantic river plumes suffered a decrease of phytoplankton biomass in the last two decades. Reconciling these observations requires a better understanding of the nutrient sources that sustain Sargassum and phytoplankton growth in the region.

Abstract

Coupled localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) in periodic arrays of metallic nanowires are attractive for use in sensing applications due to their light enhancement and their sensitivity to the surrounding environment. Due to the interwire coupling, they behave as plasmonic waveguides with high wavevector modes that require bulky methods for efficient excitation. In this contribution, we demonstrate the excitation of coupled LSPRs in gold nanowires with photonic modes supported by an optical waveguide made with ion exchange technology. Currently, although weakly-coupled LSPRs are experimentally demonstrated, strongly-coupled LSPRs are only demonstrated numerically due to the challenge represented by the fabrication of a high density nanowire array with current electron beam lithography. Due to their operation across the visible spectrum and its low-loss coupling to standard optical fibers, integrated nanowires on glass waveguides open new perspectives for the development of hybrid photonic-plasmonic integrated optical devices.

Abstract

Endemics–Area Relationships (EARs)are fundamental in theoretical and applied biogeography for understanding distribution patterns and promoting biodiversity conservation. However, calculating EARs for vascular plant species from existing data is problematic because of biased knowledge of endemic species distributions and differences between taxonomies. We aimed to overcome these challenges by developing a new standardized global dataset based on expert knowledge to produce a set of global EARs. We developed a nested circle design, with grain sizes of 10 4 , 10 5 , 10 6 , 10 7 , and 10 8 km 2 , respectively, and a global distribution of plots based on a stratified random scheme. The number of vascular plant species endemic to each circle was then estimated independently by five experts randomly chosen from a pool of 23, as both a minimum and a maximum value (lower and upper bounds of the estimation), taking into account the limitations of current knowledge and varied species concepts in existing taxonomies. This procedure resulted in a dataset of 3000 expert estimates. Based on the data, we produced three global EARs for endemic species richness using minimum, maximum and average estimates. As a validation, we used all three models to extrapolate to the entire world, producing estimates of 284,493 (minimum), 398,364 (maximum)and 312,243 (average)vascular plant species. These figures conform to the range of taxonomists’ estimates. From the models, we calculated the average area needed to harbour a single endemic species as 12,875 km 2 (range 9675–20,529). The global vascular plant EARs we calculated represent the first standardized, quantitative expectations of plant endemism at any given scale (sampling unit size). These EARs allow us to provide a clear answer to a long-standing but elusive biogeographical question: how to assess whether any area on the surface of the Earth is rich or poor in endemics relative to the average.

Abstract

We investigate the stability of a composite cyclone representative of Arabian Sea eddies using a high resolution primitive equation model. We observe that the eddy is unstable with respect to a mixed barotropic/baroclinic instability, leading to the growth of an azimuthal mode 2 perturbation. The latter deforms the eddy, which eventually evolves into a tripole after about 4 months of simulation. The presence of a critical level for the most unstable mode generates sharp fronts in the surface mixed layer where the Rossby number is large. These fronts then become unstable, and this generates submesoscale cyclones and filaments. Near these fronts, diapycnal mixing occurs, causing the potential vorticity to change sign locally, and symmetric instability to develop in the core of the cyclonic eddy. Despite the instabilities, the eddy is not destroyed and remains a large-scale coherent structure for the last 6 months of the simulation. Looking at Sea Surface Height only, the composite eddy evolves little, and fairly represents the eddy observed in the altimetry which can live for several months. The study of this simulation thus illustrates the numerous kinds of instabilities which may occur in large cyclonic eddies but cannot be captured directly by altimetric data.

Abstract

Collecting data on the localization of users is a key issue for the MASK (Mobile Airways Sentinel networK: the Allergy Diary) App. Data anonymization is a method of sanitization for privacy. The European Commission's Article 29 Working Party stated that geolocation information is personal data.To assess geolocation using the MASK method and to compare two anonymization methods in the MASK database to find an optimal privacy method., Background Collecting data on the localization of users is a key issue for the MASK (Mobile Airways Sentinel networK: the Allergy Diary) App. Data anonymization is a method of sanitization for privacy. Methods Geolocation was studied for all people who used the Allergy Diary App from December 2015 to November 2017 and who reported medical outcomes. Two different anonymization methods have been evaluated: Noise addition (randomization) and k-anonymity (generalization). Results Ninety-three thousand one hundred and sixteen days of VAS were collected from 8535 users and 54,500 (58.5%) were geolocalized, corresponding to 5428 users. Noise addition was found to be less accurate than k-anonymity using MASK data to protect the users’ life privacy. Abstract

International audience; Here, reciprocity and Babinet’s principles were applied to the design of integrated plasmonic structures on silicon photonic waveguides. Numerical analyses and near-field optical microscopy observations show that one of the hybrid photonic–plasmonic structures exhibits high confinement and enhancement of the electric field, and, through Babinet’s principle, the magnetic field of its complementary structure is confined and enhanced as well. Reciprocally, due to the modification of the electric and magnetic local density of states, enhanced emission of electric and magnetic dipoles by Purcell effect were obtained into specific silicon photonic modes. Such structures can be advantageously implemented for on-chip integrated single-photon sources.

Abstract

International audience; Background: Nowadays, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the main cause of death worldwide. A heart sound signal or phonocardiogram (PCG) is the most simple, economical and non-invasive tool to detect CVDs. Advances in technology and signal processing allow the design of computer-aided systems for heart illnesses detection from PCG signals. Purpose: The paper proposes a pipeline and benchmark for binary heart sounds classification. The features extraction architecture is focused on the use of Matching Pursuit time-frequency decomposition using Gabor dictionaries and the Linear Predictive Coding method of a residual. We compare seven classifiers with two different approaches: feature averaging and cycle averaging. Methods: We test our proposal on the PhysioNet/CinC challenge 2016 database, which comprises a wide variety of heart sounds recorded from patients with normal and different pathological heart conditions. We conduct a 10-fold stratified cross-validation method to evaluate the performance of different classification algorithms. The feature sets were also tested when using an oversampling method for balancing. Results: The benchmark identified systems showing a satisfying performance in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, and Matthews correlation coefficient. Results can be improved when using feature averaging and an oversampling strategy.

Abstract

Numerical weather, climate, or Earth system models involve the coupling of components. At a broad level, these components can be classified as the resolved fluid dynamics, unresolved fluid dynamical aspects (i.e., those represented by physical parameterizations such as subgrid-scale mixing), and nonfluid dynamical aspects such as radiation and microphysical processes. Typically, each component is developed, at least initially, independently. Once development is mature, the components are coupled to deliver a model of the required complexity. The implementation of the coupling can have a significant impact on the model. As the error associated with each component decreases, the errors introduced by the coupling will eventually dominate. Hence, any improvement in one of the components is unlikely to improve the performance of the overall system. The challenges associated with combining the components to create a coherent model are here termed physics–dynamics coupling. The issue goes beyond the coupling between the parameterizations and the resolved fluid dynamics. This paper highlights recent progress and some of the current challenges. It focuses on three objectives: to illustrate the phenomenology of the coupling problem with references to examples in the literature, to show how the problem can be analyzed, and to create awareness of the issue across the disciplines and specializations. The topics addressed are different ways of advancing full models in time, approaches to understanding the role of the coupling and evaluation of approaches, coupling ocean and atmosphere models, thermodynamic compatibility between model components, and emerging issues such as those that arise as model resolutions increase and/or models use variable resolutions.

Abstract

The overarching goals of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP on AHA) are to enable European citizens to lead healthy, active and independent lives whilst ageing. The EIP on AHA includes 74 Reference Sites. The aim of this study was to transfer innovation from an app developed by the MACVIA-France EIP on AHA reference site (Allergy Diary) to other reference sites. The phenotypic characteristics of rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity in adults and the elderly will be compared using validated information and communication technology (ICT) tools (i.e. the Allergy Diary and CARAT: Control of Allergic Rhinitis and Asthma Test) in 22 Reference Sites or regions across Europe. This will improve the understanding, assessment of burden, diagnosis and management of rhinitis in the elderly by comparison with an adult population. Specific objectives will be: (i) to assess the percentage of adults and elderly who are able to use the Allergy Diary, (ii) to study the phenotypic characteristics and treatment over a 1-year period of rhinitis and asthma multimorbidity at baseline (cross-sectional study) and (iii) to follow-up using visual analogue scale (VAS). This part of the study may provide some insight into the differences between the elderly and adults in terms of response to treatment and practice. International audience; The current lithospheric structure of the Betic Cordillera results from active geodynamic system related to slab retreat slowdown in western Mediterranean. A sharp change in lithospheric thickness has been imaged beneath the Betic Cordillera, potentially resulting from a near‐vertical subduction‐transform‐edge‐propagator fault (STEP) towards the surface with possible mantle influx. In this study, we use helium isotopic composition of bubbling and dissolved gases in groundwater samples of the central part of the Betic Cordillera to evaluate the origin of gases and to set constraints on its lithospheric structure. We found that helium isotopic composition have a dominant radiogenic component with a mantle‐derived He contribution reaching mainly 1 % for the investigated area. Estimation of He diffusion within the ductile crust indicates that this process is potentially to slow to explain the low mantle‐derived He contribution measured at the surface. A new analysis of the available data of the crustal metamorphic complexes allows us to suggest that the crust could be dissociated from the mantle with no evidence of asthenospheric influx. The weak mantle He signature could reflect a mantle material earlier incorporated in the crustal metamorphic complexes of the Betic Cordillera during their exhumation. In light of mass‐balance calculations, we propose that the slight 3He excess observed in the present‐day fluids might result from a fossil mantle signature diluted by local radiogenic production over time.

Abstract

The fate of the organic matter (OM) produced by marine life controls the major biogeochemical cycles of the Earth's system. The OM produced through photosynthesis is either preserved, exported towards sediments or degraded through remineralisation in the water column. The productive eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUSs) associated with oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) would be expected to foster OM preservation due to low O2 conditions. But their intense and diverse microbial activity should enhance OM degradation. To investigate this contradiction, sediment traps were deployed near the oxycline and in the OMZ core on an instrumented moored line off Peru. Data provided high-temporal-resolution O2 series characterising two seasonal steady states at the upper trap: suboxic ([O2] −1) and hypoxic–oxic (15 2] −1) in austral summer and winter–spring, respectively. The OMZ vertical transfer efficiency of particulate organic carbon (POC) between traps (Teff) can be classified into three main ranges (high, intermediate, low). These different Teff ranges suggest that both predominant preservation (high Teff > 50 %) and remineralisation (intermediate Teff 20  Teff Teff > 50 %) has been reported in summer and winter associated with extreme limitation in O2 concentrations or OM quantity for OM degradation. However, higher levels of O2 or OM, or less refractory OM, at the oxycline, even in a co-limitation context, can decrease the OMZ transfer efficiency to below 50 %. This is especially true in summer during intraseasonal wind-driven oxygenation events. In late winter and early spring, high oxygenation conditions together with high fluxes of sinking particles trigger a shutdown of the OMZ transfer (Teff δ15N suggests a complex pattern of 15N impoverishment or enrichment according to Teff modulation. This sensitivity of OM to O2 fluctuations and particle concentration calls for further investigation into OM and O2-driven remineralisation processes. This should include consideration of the intermittent behaviour of OMZ towards OM demonstrated in past studies and climate projections.

Abstract

Wave upon wave of disease The cholera pathogen, Vibrio cholerae , is considered to be ubiquitous in water systems, making the design of eradication measures apparently fruitless. Nevertheless, local and global Vibrio populations remain distinct. Now, Weill et al. and Domman et al. show that a surprising diversity between continents has been established. Latin America and Africa bear different variants of cholera toxin with different transmission dynamics and ecological niches.
