Objective. To determine the prevalence and causes of vision loss and calculate the effective cataract surgery coverage (eCSC) in adults aged 60 years and older in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2020. Methods. The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness Vision Atlas and the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness databases were used as data source. The collected data were used to estimate the prevalence and causes of vision loss in people aged 60 years and older, and to determine the eCSC. Results. The overall prevalence of moderate to severe vision impairment (MSVI) and blindness in Latin America and the Caribbean were 14.14% and 2.94%, respectively. Tropical Latin America was the subregion with the highest prevalence of blindness (3.89%) while Southern Latin America had the lowest (0.96%). For both MSVI and blindness, cataract was the main cause of vision loss. The eCSC rates showed great variation, ranging from 4.0% in Guatemala to 75.2% in Suriname. Conclusions. The prevalence of vision loss in adults aged 60 years and older in Latin America and the Caribbean was higher than previous estimates on younger groups. Cataract was the main cause of blindness, and the eCSC indicates that the outcomes from cataract surgery should be improved. Specific actions associated with improving access, integrating eye assessment with primary care programs, expanding the use of telemedicine, and improving data quality should be taken by public health authorities aiming to address vision loss in this group.

More than 8 million older people in Latin America depend on long-term care (LTC), accounting for 12% of people aged ≥ 60 years and almost 27% of those aged ≥ 80. It is crucial to develop sustainable strategies for providing LTC in the area, including institutional care. This special report aims to characterize institutional LTC in four countries (Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica and Mexico), using available information systems, and to identify the strategies adopted to support institutional care in these countries. This narrative review used nationwide, open-access, public data sources to gather demographic estimates and information about institutional LTC coverage and the availability of open-access data for the proportion of people with LTC needs, the number of LTC facilities and the number of residents living in them. These countries have a larger share of older people than the average in Latin America but fewer LTC facilities than required by the demand. National surveys lack standardization in defining disability, LTC and dependency on care. Information about institutional care is mainly fragmented and does not regularly include LTC facilities, their residents and workers. Data are crucial to inform evidence-based decisions to favor prioritization and to support advances in promoting policies around institutional LTC in Latin America. Although information about institutional care in the region is fragmented and insufficient, this paper profiles the four selected countries. It highlights the need for a better structure for datadriven LTC information systems. The lack of information emphasizes the urgency of the need to focus on and encourage research into this topic.

The objective of this article was to provide a consensus-based short list of effective indicators to measure health system responsiveness to the needs of older adults which would be relevant to informing public policy. An e-Delphi study was done with no direct interaction between respondents. Virtual surveys were sent to 141 participants with experience in analysis and monitoring of health indicators, management of health systems, and health care of older adults. A baseline list of 24 previously published indicators was used. The criteria for selection as high priority indicators were: usefulness as a tracer of health system responsiveness and usefulness to inform policy. Consensus was defined as: ≥70% agreement among the participants that the indicator was very high or high priority; plus being benchmarked by ≥50% of respondents as having a higher relative weight than other indicators; plus being in the top 10 in the ranking list. The first round of the process included 38 participants with varied professional backgrounds. Consensus was reached for seven indicators after two rounds. Five indicators were related to distal outcomes (mortality, disability, or healthy life expectancy), one to monitoring functional assessments, and one to poverty levels. Health systems professionals should consider these comprehensive priority indicators in their efforts to provide a better health system for older people.

The world continues to undergo a profound demographic shift toward increasing longevity –but quality of life is not improving correspondingly. At the same time, countries are taking stock of the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on national immunization programs. The pandemic exacerbated the declines in vaccination coverage for multiple vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD). To ensure that all persons receive all the vaccines for which they are eligible, it is time to consider how applying a life course approach (LCA) to immunization programs can help reinvigorate and redesign actions for greater vaccine uptake. In this mini review, we present the key concepts and principles of the LCA as applied to national immunization programs. Also, we offer recommendations on how health systems can achieve regional and national goals to ensure all people receive the recommended vaccine doses at every stage of life, thus ensuring the greatest benefits for individuals and societies.

The objective of this article is to summarize the evolution of the regional commitments of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) on health promotion and strategies to improve the health and well-being of women, children, adolescents, and older persons. PAHO regional strategies approved by Member States in the last 20 years are used as the main source of information. The article presents the challenges of making health promotion a public health strategy widely applied in the Region of the Americas and the efforts to renew Member States’ collective actions. The article also describes current PAHO efforts to include the positive aspects of health (i.e., well-being, optimal development, and functional ability) and the life course approach as opportunities to advance equity. The article reflects on immunization as a public good and the urgency to address the current challenges as a core element of the regional efforts to transform health systems after more than two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The life course approach effectively responds to pressing health needs and fills critical gaps to improve health outcomes in the era of COVID-19 and beyond. This article outlines four main reasons to adopt and implement the life course approach in public health at national and local levels: (i) the approach effectively responds to new health trends and evidence, (ii) it fills longstanding gaps in care, (iii) it best addresses health inequities, and (iv) it can help achieve more with less.

Objetivo. Describir los resultados en salud de los hombres a partir del análisis sobre la interrelación de estos con las masculinidades, que permitirá la identificación de acciones para mejorar los resultados de salud de hombres, mujeres y niños. Métodos. Actualización y expansión de los hallazgos del informe Masculinidades y Salud en las Américas publicado por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud en el 2019, el cual se realizó a partir de una búsqueda intencionada y actualizada de datos secundarios sobre la salud masculina y otras investigaciones que abordan la temática. Resultados. La salud de los hombres y de las mujeres es distinta, no solo por los factores biológicos, sino también por la construcción y las desigualdades de género, y la intersección de los determinantes sociales. Existen importantes diferencias en los patrones de mortalidad y morbilidad por sexo a lo largo del curso de vida, incluida la sobremortalidad de los hombres por causas prevenibles como las muertes violentas, los accidentes viales y el consumo de alcohol y otras drogas (cocaína, cannabis y anfetaminas, entre otras). Varias de las causas de la mortalidad y la morbilidad se encuentran vinculadas con la expresión del modelo hegemónico de masculinidad y esto representa un riesgo para la salud integral de los hombres y para las personas cercanas. Conclusiones. Proponemos que se deben políticas coordinadas e intersectoriales con perspectiva de género relacional e interseccional que incluyan a los hombres para generar acciones de salud en todas las políticas para la diversidad de hombres con consecuencias positivas también para niños, adolescentes y mujeres.

La hipoacusia representa una de las principales causas de discapacidad a nivel mundial y su prevalencia aumenta a medida que se envejece. Representa un tipo de discapacidad que, en la mayoría de los casos, puede ser potencialmente prevenible y tratable, por lo que su prevención, identificación temprana y rehabilitación integral deberían ser algunos de los puntos de acción a nivel local ya que se ha relacionado con numerosos desenlaces adversos en salud, incluyendo los dominios físico, mental, social y económico de las personas mayores. El objetivo de este artículo es resaltar la importancia de la prevención de la hipoacusia y promover su rehabilitación a lo largo del curso de vida, especialmente en personas mayores, y describir estrategias que se han planteado desde la Organización Mundial de la Salud y la Organización Panamericana de la Salud.

The Region of the Americas is facing accelerated demographic and epidemiological changes. As these trends will continue in future years, long-term care needs are expected to rise. How can countries respond to these challenges? We propose that countries in the Region should invest in the implementation of long-term care systems. Considering the heterogeneity in the Region, we propose a strategy based on three components: (i) understanding the problem; (ii) thinking about solutions; and (iii) building support and consensus. Depending on each country’s needs and capacities, these three elements suggest short-term and long-term actions and goals, from generating better information on long-term care needs to the implementation of long-term care systems. Longterm care is a relevant issue for the Region today. The task is challenging, but countries need to embrace it and move forward before it is too late.

In the current context of the aging of populations and the increase in multiple chronic conditions and dependence, it is important that health systems provide opportunities to improve capacities of older adults to enable healthy aging. Opportunities to enhance older adults’ abilities, including self-management, can be offered through evidence-based programs. Such programs have been proven effective in improving individuals’ symptoms and quality of life, often lowering health-care costs. Self-management evidence-based programs can foster the development of personal skills, increase confidence and motivation on self-care, and help individuals to make better decisions about their own health. This special report describes the implementation history of a self-management program in the Region of the Americas, and the barriers to and facilitators of implementation that can serve as examples for evidence-based program dissemination in the Region.

Objective. To identify key indicators that will allow empirical measurement of a health systems responsiveness to older people. Methods. We conducted a series of consultations with experts to develop a relevant list of indicators. Concept mapping was used to devise the list, including the steps of preparation, brainstorming and structuring. Additionally, four countries were used as national case studies to test the feasibility of measuring health system responsiveness with readily available national-level data (Barbados, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico). Results. Our study resulted in a list of 25 indicators scored with high usefulness for informing public policy, 10 of which were also categorized as being of high availability. National case studies were useful to assess the feasibility of measuring health system responsiveness in different settings. Conclusions. Responsiveness can be comprehensively assessed by (i) approaching the intrinsic features of the system via its inputs, outputs, and outcomes, and (ii) measuring the impact of the system on meeting the needs of older people in terms of their health, financial protection, and expectations. Further consensus is needed to develop a list of core indicators that could be used as a baseline for measuring a health systems responsiveness to the needs of older people.

Objective. To describe the life expectancy, healthy life expectancy, disease burden, and leading causes of mortality and disability in adults aged 65 years and older in the Region of the Americas from 1990 to 2019. Methods. We used estimates from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 to examine the level and trends of life expectancy, healthy life expectancy, years of life lost, years lived with disability, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Results. Across the Region, life expectancy at 65 years increased from 17.1 years (95% uncertainty intervals (UI): 17.0–17.1) in 1990 to 19.2 years (95% UI: 18.9–19.4) in 2019 while healthy life expectancy increased from 12.2 years (95% UI: 10.9–12.4) to 13.6 years (95% UI: 12.2–14.9). All-cause DALY rates decreased in each older persons’ age group; however, absolute proportional DALYs increased from 22% to 32%. Ischemic heart disease, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were the leading causes of premature mortality. Diabetes mellitus, age-related and other hearing loss, and lower back pain were the leading causes of disability. Conclusion. The increase in life expectancy and decrease of DALYs indicate the positive effect of improvements in social conditions and health policies. However, the smaller increase in healthy life expectancy suggests that, despite living longer, people spend a substantial amount of time in their old age with disability and illness. Preventable and controllable diseases account for most of the disease burden in older adults in the Americas. Society-wide and life-course approaches, and adequate health services are needed to respond to the health needs of older people in the Region.

Background: Actions focused on age-friendly environments contribute to promote and maintain older people’s functional ability and may enable them to contribute to their communities and enjoy life. As such, age-friendly practices require collaboration between diverse stakeholders across multiple sectors responsible for natural, built, and social environments, which can be particularly relevant during public health emergencies when socio-ecological vulnerabilities become more salient and may disproportionally affect older people. This paper presents a protocol for a scoping review aiming to investigate the breadth of evidence concerning the development, implementation, and evaluation of age-friendly practices during the COVID-19 pandemic. The protocol sets out the objectives, methods, and dissemination plans for the review. Methods: The scoping review will be conducted in line with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) scoping review methodology. We will search databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, PsychNet) and grey literature sources. Publications relating to practices across the 8 domains of the World Health Organization’s age-friendly cities and communities’ framework will be included. A tabular data extraction tool will be used to facilitate a narrative synthesis of results. Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval is not required as the methods proposed for this scoping review consist of collecting publicly available data. Findings will be reported in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and submitted to a journal for academic dissemination. Lay dissemination plans include an infographic and a blog-style article presenting our core results. Conclusion: The publication of this protocol allows for transparency in the systematic process of a scoping review focused on age-friendly practices during COVID-19. Findings emerging from the scoping review will provide insights into the evidence available regarding age-friendly activities during COVID-19 and may inform future age-friendly practices during public health emergencies and beyond.

Half-finished ferrous products, used as metal stocks to supply forge workshops, are privileged markers of the circulation of goods and the organization of exchange networks. Several thousands of these products have been inventoried, shaped like flat irons with a rolled extremity, and also known as currency bars. During this period of marked iron metallurgical development, from both a qualitative and a quantitative viewpoint, the standardized shapes of these products indicate the adoption of common standards over large geographic zones. In the scope of this article, an exceptional set of more than 70 currency-bars, found in a sector extending from Val de Saône to the surroundings of Salins-les-Bains (Jura), was studied using the latest methodologies developed in the domains of dating iron objects, the characterization of materials and sourcing analyses. This interdisciplinary approach enables us to tackle some major, still outstanding questions. The batch of half-finished products studied here constitutes the centre of a concentration extending as far as Switzerland and, in a more diffuse way, until the banks of the Seine and the southwest of Germany. Given the high number of objects available and their homogeneity, it was possible to analyse the conditions of their production, circulation and deposition. The results lead to a radical revision of previous interpretations, which were solely based on discovery contexts, and shed new light on their chrono-cultural context, which turns out to be much older than previously thought. The radiocarbon dates mainly cover the first Iron Age and extend sporadically up to the 3rd c. BC. This enables us to re-evaluate the chronology of these objects, which were previously attributed to the second Iron Age on the sole basis of discovery contexts. On the grounds of these results, we propose a new tripartite typo-chronology of half-finished products. The determination of fabrication techniques and the results of the sourcing study, based on the statistical analysis of the characteristic chemical components of the slag trapped in the half-finished products, showed that they were part of diversified and codified trade networks, involving different intermediaries. The metal derived from different production centres initially circulated in an unprocessed form, and was then transformed into standardized products in forge workshops. The multiplicity of provenances observed within the same deposit could indirectly indicate the involvement of different actors in the gathering of metallic raw materials. The study of chrono-cultural contexts, and of deposition conditions, demonstrates that these half-finished products are part of a broader trend using objects in copper and iron alloys for the payment of social obligations. These half-finished polymorphic products in iron are not only vectors of specialized trade, but also of symbolic and memorial practices.

Starting from the second century BC, with the fast expansion of the Roman Empire, iron production and consumption developed exponentially in north-western Europe. This rapid growth naturally led to an increase in trade, that still remains to be studied encompassing a broad scope, so as to not neglect long-distance exchanges. This is today possible by taking advantage of the progress made in the past 40 years in archaeology and archaeometallurgy. Cargoes of iron bars recovered from a group of 23 wrecks located off the coast of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône, France), opposite an old branch of the Rhône River, constitute a rich opportunity to examine this trade, by comparing the slag inclusions trapped in iron bars to primary slag from the six main ironmaking areas in Gaul. Based on a trace element analysis of these inclusions and this slag, we suggest that ships travelled down the Rhône carrying iron produced in Wallonia (Belgium), while others sailed up the Rhône transporting iron produced in Montagne Noire (Aude, France).

This paper analyzes the field performance of two cup anemometers installed in Zaragoza (Spain). Data acquired over almost three years, from January 2015 to December 2017, were analyzed. The effect of the different variables (wind speed, temperature, harmonics, wind speed variations, etc.) on two cup anemometers was studied. Data analysis was performed with ROOT, an open-source scientific software toolkit developed by CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire) for the study of particle physics. The effects of temperature, wind speed, and wind dispersion (as a first approximation to atmospheric turbulence) on the first and third harmonics of the anemometers’ rotation speed (i.e., the anemometers’ output signature) were studied together with their evolution throughout the measurement period. The results are consistent with previous studies on the influence of velocity, turbulence, and temperature on the anemometer performance. Although more research is needed to assess the effect of the anemometer wear and tear degradation on the harmonic response of the rotor’s angular speed, the results show the impact of a recalibration on the performance of an anemometer by comparing this performance with that of a second anemometer.

Objetivo: Determinar las variables asociadas al sedentarismo en jóvenes estudiantes de un instituto público de educación superior en Lima, Perú. Materiales y métodos: Estudio observacional, transversal, analítico, retrospectivo. Los datos fueron tomados de las fichas de evaluación médica y registros académicos de los estudiantes. La muestra estuvo conformada por 187 estudiantes de educación superior, se exploró las variables edad, sexo, peso, talla, perímetro abdominal, ciclo académico de estudios, rendimiento académico y programa académico. La evaluación médica anual en los estudiantes incluyó el desarrollo del cuestionario International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Para la identificación de las variables asociadas al sedentarismo se usó la prueba de Chi-Cuadrado. Se aceptó un nivel de significancia del 95 % (p=600 EMT/semana). El estado nutricional sobrepeso/obesidad y el rendimiento académico moderado estuvieron significativamente asociadas al sedentarismo.

Caribbean countries are experiencing social, epidemiological, and demographic transitions shaped by the growing elderly population and the rise of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)now responsible for 78% of all deaths. These circumstances demand rethinking the model of care to improve health outcomes and build more sustainable health systems with new orientations in policy, service delivery, organization, training, technology, and financing. Policy must be aimed towards healthy living, leveraging interventions that ensure healthy aging. The health system must proactively structure interventions to reduce the incidence of new NCD cases and to prevent related complications. Interventions should be focused on optimizing the individuals capacity, functional ability, and autonomy within adapted environments, as well as with the necessary preventive, long-term care, self-care, community care, and health system support.

Summary: Background: The reduction by a third of premature non-communicable disease (NCD) mortality by 2030 is the ambitious target of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.4. However, the indicator is narrowly defined, including only four major NCDs (cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases) and only for people aged 30–70 years. This study focuses on premature avertable mortality from NCDs—premature deaths caused by NCDs that could be prevented through effective public policies and health interventions or amenable to high-quality health care—to assess trends at global, regional, and national levels using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017. Methods: We reviewed existing lists of NCD causes of death that are either preventable through public health policies and interventions or amenable to health care to create a list of avertable NCD causes of death, which was mapped to the GBD cause list. We estimated age-standardised years of life lost (YLL) per 100 000 population due to premature avertable mortality from NCDs, avertable NCD cause clusters, and non-avertable NCD causes by sex, location, and year and reported their 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). We examined trends in age-standardised YLL due to avertable and non-avertable NCDs, assessed the progress of premature avertable mortality from NCDs in achieving SDG 3.4, and explored specific avertable NCD cause clusters that could make a substantial contribution to overall trends in premature mortality. Findings: Globally, premature avertable mortality from NCDs for both sexes combined declined −1·3% (95% UI −1·4 to −1·2) per year, from 12 855 years (11 809 to 14 051) in 1990 to 9008 years (8329 to 9756) in 2017. However, the absolute number of avertable NCD deaths increased 49·3% (95% UI 47·3 to 52·2) from 23·1 million (22·0–24·1) deaths in 1990 to 34·5 million (33·4 to 35·6) in 2017. Premature avertable mortality from NCDs reduced in every WHO region and in most countries and territories between 1990 and 2017. Despite these reductions, only the Western Pacific and European regions and 25 countries (most of which are high-income countries) are on track to achieve SDG target 3.4. Since 2017, there has been a global slowdown in the reduction of premature avertable mortality from NCDs. In 2017, high premature avertable mortality from NCDs was clustered in low-income and middle-income countries, mainly in the South-East Asia region, Eastern Mediterranean region, and African region. Most countries with large annual reductions in such mortality between 1990 and 2017 had achieved low levels of premature avertable mortality from NCDs by 2017. Some countries, the most populous examples being Afghanistan, the Central African Republic, Uzbekistan, Haiti, Mongolia, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Ukraine, Laos, and Egypt, reported both an upward trend and high levels of premature avertable mortality from NCDs. Cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and chronic respiratory diseases have been the main drivers of the global and regional reduction in premature avertable mortality from NCDs, whereas premature mortality from substance use disorders, chronic kidney disease and acute glomerulonephritis, and diabetes have been increasing. Interpretation: Worldwide, there has been a substantial reduction in premature avertable mortality from NCDs, but progress has been uneven across populations. Countries vary substantially in current levels and trends and, hence, the extent to which they are on track to achieve SDG 3.4. By accounting for premature avertable mortality while avoiding arbitrary age cutoffs, premature avertable mortality from NCDs is a robust, comprehensive, and actionable indicator for quantifying and monitoring global and national progress towards NCD prevention and control. La marginación urbana en México ha crecido enormemente en los últimos años afectando directamente a los jóvenes. En este estudio empírico se analizó su efecto sobre la resiliencia y felicidad juvenil en función de factores estructurales. Se aplicó el Cuestionario RESI–M y la Escala de Felicidad de un ítem, a 1201 estudiantes mexicanos de secundaria y bachillerato. Los resultados mostraron que la marginación afecta de forma diferenciada las dimensiones de la resiliencia. Además, dentro de los grupos por grado de marginación, hubo diferencias significativas en la resiliencia según sexo, escolaridad y tipo de familia. Los análisis de regresión lineal mostraron el valor predictivo de algunos de los factores estructurales. Se observó cómo las condiciones de vida marginales afectan la capacidad de resiliencia de los adolescentes, aunque no la predicen dado que el individuo puede transformarse a sí mismo y a su realidad adversa ya que la felicidad no se asocia a las condiciones del contexto, excepto en relación a la edad y la familia. Se analiza la influencia diferenciada de los tipos de familias en relación a la marginación y su papel en el desarrollo de la resiliencia para afrontar los retos futuros y evitar el desajuste social. Se aportan elementos para profundiza el estudio de los adolescentes en marginación urbana.

This article presents the latest advances in the field of archaeometric studies for iron based artefacts. These are placed in line with the approaches taken for many years in an interdisciplinary way on both metal production sites and on the objects themselves. These advances, based on the coupling of chemical analyzes with appropriate statistical inferences enable to determine the process for obtaining metal (direct or indirect) but also to verify the assumptions of production sites. This latter approach, however, requires the gathering of important reference datatsets based on analysis of slag from production areas. Finally, it is now possible to date the ferrous objects by radiocarbon technique. All these advances paved the way for major spatial and chronological studies in the coming years.

El cristianismo hegemónico, la mayoría católica y la presencia activa de pentecostales en el continente americano ha hecho pensar que solo existe una mirada acerca de las diversidades sexogenéricas en el cristianismo, presentándolo como una incompatibilidad espontánea y “natural”; no obstante, históricamente existe una serie de disidencias por muchísimas razones que proponen otras narrativas, entre ellas hay algunas que apuestan por la agencia espiritual de las personas de la diversidad sexual y de género. Teniendo en cuenta una perspectiva descriptiva se tomará en cuenta trabajos etnográficos desde la antropología y la teología para abordar narrativas cristianas, tanto la hegemónica como algunas disidentes para presentar otras formas de comprensión de lo cristiano y las disidencias sexogenéricas desde una propuesta teórica y práctica; para finalizar se propondrán alternativas de agencia espiritual como alternativa a la institucionalidad cristiana. En este artículo se contrastó un modelo explicativo de la percepción de inseguridad, a través del análisis del papel de la impunidad percibida, programas de seguridad pública, confianza en autoridades y medidas preventivas, en la relación entre la victimización y la inseguridad. Participaron 8170 habitantes del Estado de Morelos, México. Los resultados mostraron que la victimización ejerció un efecto directo sobre impunidad y estas a su vez incrementaron la inseguridad percibida. Mientras que la confianza en las autoridades y los programas preventivos, disminuyeron la inseguridad a pesar del alto nivel de victimización. Los resultados tienen importantes implicaciones para el tema de la seguridad ciudadana. ---- In this article explicative model of the perception of insecurity was contrasted, through the analysis of the role played by impunity, prevention programs’ expectation, trust on the authorities and prevention strategies in the relation between victimization and insecurity. The participants were 8170 inhabitants of Morelos State, Mexico. The results showed that victimization had a direct effect on impunity, which increased the perception of insecurity. While trust on the authorities and the prevention programs reduced the insecurity regardless of the victimization level. Results have important implications for the citizen’s security.

We proceed via the concept of cratotropism, based on Alfred Adler's conception of the thirst for power. And on the triad: ideological or cultural competition, financial pressure/resistance, and armed conflict as a last resource, as a means of confronting problems of a crato-eleuterotropic nature, and based on the conception of the modulating function of human knowledge in respect of Michel Foucault's "social powers" and the Marxist concept of property.

Se presenta un conjunto de experiencias basadas en la interacción magnética, a partir de las cuales se puede construir juguetes. Esta actividad se ha desarrollado con alumnos de 3º y 4º de E.S.O. los cuales han elaborado los juguetes y explicado su funcionamiento a sus compañeros.

Architecture represents key evidence of dynastic practice and change in the archaeological world. Chronologies for many important buildings and sequences, including the iconic temples of medieval Angkor in Cambodia, are based solely on indirect associations from inscriptions and architectural styles. The Baphuon temple, one of the last major buildings in Angkor without textual or scientifically-derived chronological evidence, is crucial both for the context and date of its construction and the period when its western façade was modified into a unique, gigantic Reclining Buddha. Its construction was part of a major dynastic change and florescence of the Hindu-Mahayana Buddhist state and the modification is the key evidence of Theravada Buddhist power after Angkor's decline in the 15th century. Using a newly-developed approach based on AMS radiocarbon dating to directly date four iron crampons integrated into the structure we present the first direct evidence for the history of the Baphuon. Comprehensive study of ferrous elements shows that both construction and modification were critically earlier than expected. The Baphuon can now be considered as the major temple associated with the imperial reformations and territorial consolidation of Suryavarman I (1010-1050 AD) for whom no previous building to legitimize his reign could be identified. The Theravada Buddhist modification is a hundred years prior to the conventional 16th century estimation and is not associated with renewed use of Angkor. Instead it relates to the enigmatic Ayutthayan occupation of Angkor in the 1430s and 40s during a major period of climatic instability. Accurately dating iron with relatively low carbon content is a decisive step to test long-standing assumptions about architectural histories and political processes for states that incorporated iron into buildings (e.g., Ancient Greece, medieval India). Furthermore, this new approach has the potential to revise chronologies related to iron consumption practices since the origins of ferrous metallurgy three millennia ago.
