- Abstract
Microfludics concerns the manipulation of fluids at the order of some picoliters, which leads to the use of minimum of reactant, and therefore relative low cost of chemical reactants and analytes [1]. Some years ago, multiple applications have been developed in order to show that traditional expensive experiments can be simplified into simple chips. Some examples: the use of certain elastomers like PDMS, some ceramic materials as low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) modules [7], the developement of PADs - microfluidics paper analytical devices [3], among others. Alternatively, along some decades, the finite element methods (FEM) [4] has provided, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) which permits the support and adaptation for analysis for microfluidics. In this work, we focus in the generation of simple emulsions, and illustrate the experimen- tal and theoretical method for reaching them. Experimentally, by using softlithography techniques for building microdevices on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) materials, and by using an open source hardware Arduino [8] for programming and controlling a system of sy- ringe infusion. Parallelly, such emulsions are obtained too in an open source computational method based on OpenFoam [9], using a suitable method regarding the wettability [5, 6] of the inner microchannel walls.

- Abstract

- Abstract
EnglishIntroduction: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has been evaluated in different scenarios of the broad spectrumof patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis. The choice of treatment starts through a risk assessment guided by amultidisciplinary team.Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze the population undergoing TAVI in Latin America according to their risk. Methods: From March 2009 to December 2018, consecutive TAVI procedures registered in the Latin American multicenter registrywere included. The indication of TAVI was made in each case by a multidisciplinary team set up by each center. The population isstratified according to the surgical risk evaluated by the STS-PROM score. Three groups were defined, based on the establishedSTS-PROM cut-off points: high risk (RA, higher 8%), intermediate risk (IR, between 4%-8%) and low risk (RB, lower 4%).Results: 770 patients were included in the analysis, resulting 50,2% female, with a mean age of 81 y/o (IQR 75.6-85.7). 29.8%were included in the AR group (STS-PROM 11 (9.3-16.7), 44% at intermediate risk (STS-PROM 6 (4.8-6.71) and 26.1% atlow risk (STS-PROM 2.7 (2-3.24). The proportion of low-risk patients has increased significantly over the period of inclusion(ptrend 0.011). Femoral access (95%), being percutaneous in 69% of patients. Self-expanding valves were implanted in 80%.23% of the valves were repositionable without differences across the groups. There was no differences in 30-day mortality(RA 10.4%, IR 6.48%, RB 5.9%, p 0.154). Reduction in mortality were observed (RA 13, 7-4.1%, p0.001; RB 11.7-0%; p 0.0023)during the analyzed period. Conclusions: Risk stratification through surgical “scores” continues to represent a very useful guide, however the indicationof TAVI in the real world incorporates other factors not contemplated in the classical score, which modifies our decisions indaily practice.

In the teaching of Software Engineering (SE), serious games or educational games are becoming increasingly used tools to stimulate the learning of aspects related to the software development process. However, few games are applied in the classroom, as there is no synthesized information about which games can be used depending on the content of the SE taught. This paper aims to identify which educational games have been developed for teaching SE in Brazil. A systematic mapping was carried out on digital bases for teaching computer and software engineering, identifying 25 educational games. The results indicate that although there are games for teaching project management, software testing and software process, there is still a need for games that include new dynamics beyond the traditional ones (e.g. games based on questions and answers, boards and cards) and topics in the discipline.

The complexity of a non-linear character that represents the act of teaching does not allow the teacher to resort to a single way of approaching the process of education in higher education. In other words, contemporary society filled with information technologies with a high degree of interactivity requires from teachers a greater understanding and search for different motivational forms and mechanisms for students. In this context, the work addresses the use of digital games as a tool for interaction between students and kinetic chemistry content, as an alternative methodology of the teaching and learning process. For this purpose, an interactive board (Edutable), logical management software and a mobile application were designed and built during the work. Then, based on the usability method, task success studies and positive usability experience were performed. The results of the evaluations showed that, in the users' perception, the board game complies with the playful and educational character, obtaining scores above 80% on the SUS (System Usability Scale), an evaluation model applied in the present work.

The energy market is undergoing important changes, driven by the realization of the European internal energy market on the one hand and the increase of distributed energy resources on the other hand. The introduction of new resources in the energy market that are mainly connected to the distribution grid creates new opportunities and challenges for system operators (TSO and DSO), commercial market players, and end consumers. In particular, resources connected at the distribution grid could be used to provide ancillary services (e.g., frequency control, congestion management, and voltage control). Consequently, coordination between system operators is needed to guarantee a safe, reliable, and cost-efficient use of these resources. This chapter introduces five coordination schemes to enhance interaction between system operators. Each scheme is described in terms of roles, responsibilities, and market design. Furthermore, we discuss the advantages, disadvantages, and feasibility of each coordination scheme and evaluate the link with the ongoing European evolutions.

In this paper, we consider consumers and prosumers who interact on a platform. Consumers buy energy to the platform to maximize their usage benefit while minimizing the cost paid to the platform. Prosumers, who have the possibility to generate energy, self-consume part of it to maximize their usage benefit and sell the rest to the platform to maximize their revenue. Product differentiation is introduced and consumers can specify preferences regarding locality, RES-based generation , and matchings with the prosumers. The consumers and prosumers' problems being coupled through a matching probability, we provide analytical characterizations of the resulting Nash equilibrium. Assuming supply-shortages occur, we reformulate the platform problem as a consensus problem that we solve using Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM), enabling minimal information exchanges between the nodes. On top of the platform, a trust-based mechanism combining exploitation of nodes with good reputation and exploration of new nodes, is implemented to determine the miner node which validates the transactions. A case study is provided to analyze the impact of preferences and miner selection dynamic process.

In order to evaluate UX in software applications, several technologies (tools, methods, techniques) have been proposed that range from using questionnaires to employing biometrics to gather quantitative and qualitative data on users??? experience. However, there is a need for research in the development of specific UX evaluation technologies that are easy and comfortable to use from the point of view of users, while supporting software engineers in the correction of the aspects that cause poor experiences. Additionally, new UX approaches should be proposed for evaluating mobile applications, as there is still a shortage of methods for this type of applications, which is rising in demand. This doctoral dissertation proposes an alternative approach for evaluating mobile applications called Redesigning for EXperience (REX), which intends to be less intrusive for users when extracting UX data, while generating reports containing design suggestions for improving the UX. We assessed the acceptance of the initial versions of the REX approach from the point of view of users and software engineers in two studies. When compared to 3E, a qualitative UX evaluation method, the results showed that REX was perceived as more fun, useful and more interactive. Additionally, software engineers considered REX useful and easy to understand, while suggesting improving its report to facilitate its understanding and increase its use. After working on the improvements opportunities from the empirical studies, we developed a tool support for the REX approach called the REX report generator. Also, we carried out an observational study to verify to which extent the REX approach could be applied in a real software development project. Thus, REX was employed by users to evaluate a mobile educational application and a discussion meeting was held with the software development team to discuss the improvement suggestions provided by REX to support the redesign process. The findings from the observational study indicated the satisfaction of users to report their experience with the REX approach, while the members of the development team agreed with the usefulness of the REX report and its improvement suggestions. By providing design suggestions, we aim to support software engineers in improving the UX of the developed mobile applications, thus increasing their quality and acceptance in the market. .

The immediate deviation of the urine either through urethral catheter or suprapubic punction, by means of a device known as trocar is the elective treatment of these medical emergencies. The difficulties to purchase such device in Zimbabwe where a Cuban medical international mission was taking place, led to the creation of a device to perform suprapubic punctions at very low prices, capable of solving obstructive urologic emergency, in order to avoid complications and to ease its use by the specialists. To create the Adjustable Trocar of Suprapubic Punction (ATSP) different disused materials were recuperated (Ex. The handle of the device was made of an orthopedic drill and the sharp portion from a stainless steel belaying pin, making in it a tip and a thread). During May 2005 to December 2006, 90 suprapubic punctions were performed to patients that attended to the Emergency Rooms or Clinics suffering from acute and chronic retention of urine due to obstructive diseases. Results showed that out of 30 patients treated with the instrument (ATSP), male sex mainly, only one developed post-instrument sepsis and no traumas due to failed attempts and/or intestinal perforations was observed; compared to the patients treated with the traditional device and non-technical improvised instruments, it constitutes a significant contribution in Urology.

The distribution network is being challenged bythe increasing capacity of Distributed Generation (DG),end-users embracing smart grid technologies to offer their flexibility, the continuous growth of the peak load in most European countries, the expected increase of Electric Vehicles (EVs) to hit the road by 2020 along with public charging stations. All of these evolving and new uses of electricity increase the complexity of the management of the distribution system. Current trends impose challenges that impact the ability of the DSO to carry out his responsibilities: develop, operate, and maintain the network in order to deliver high-quality services to grid users and other stakeholders of the electric power system, while ensuring safety of people, assets most efficient use and system security incooperation with TSOs. DSOs need to evolve from its former “fit and forget” approach towards an Active Distribution System Management approach to ensure the fulfilment of DSOs’ core responsibilities by taking advantage of the opportunities brought by smart grid technologies. The exploration of these opportunities could lead to the provision of new regulated services, the facilitation of electricity markets, the empowerment of the end-customers and the creation of sustainable public policies for the cost-efficient integration of renewables. This evolution will allow DSOs to provide an adequate Quality of Service (QoS) and to enhance the Security of Supply (SoS) in a cost-efficient way.

The West Virginia University Transportable Heavy-Duty Emissions Testing Laboratory was used to evaluate exhaust emissions from nine transit buses from six separate manufacturers, as commissioned by the Mexico City, Mexico, Secretariat of the Environment. The vehicles included a hybrid-drive diesel bus, two buses with lean-burn spark-ignited compressed natural gas (CNG) engines, and six buses powered by conventional diesel engines. Vehicle testing weights (curb weight plus passenger weight) ranged from 26,996 lb (12,256 kg) to 57,025 lb (25,889 kg), and passenger capacities ranged from 85 to 161. Two driving cycles, the European Transient Cycle (ETC, also known as the FIGE transient cycle) and a new, three-mode Mexico City Schedule, were used to simulate in-use driving conditions during emissions measurements. Diesel fuels with three different sulfur concentrations (15, 150, and 350 ppm) were also examined, and the lowest-sulfur fuel (15 ppm) was not found to have an appreciable direct effect on emissions. When the ETC was used, oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions varied from 5.5 to 11.6 g/mi, whereas particulate matter emissions varied from 0.02 to 0.86 g/mi. Significant differences in emissions and fuel economy for the two CNG buses raised the issue that fuel delivery systems must be optimized for operation at high altitudes. The differences in fuel economy and NOx emissions from the hybrid bus for congested and noncongested driving conditions were significantly less than those from the conventional diesel and CNG buses.

The measured data obtained from sensors in continuous monitoring of civil structures are mainly used for modal identification and damage detection. Therefore, when modal identification analysis is carried out the quality in the identification of the modes will highly influence the damage detection results. It is also widely recognized that the usefulness of the measured data used for modal identification and damage detection is significantly influenced by the number and locations of sensors. The objective of this study is the numerical implementation of two widely known optimum sensor placement methods in beam-like structures., {"references":["D.C.

This master degree thesis presents the Web Design Usability Evaluation (Web DUE) technique, a technique that was specifically crafted for the usability inspection of paper based prototypes (or mockups). The Web DUE technique aims at aiding inspectors in the identification of usability problems in earlier stages of the development process, thus reducing the cost of correcting them. To achieve this goal, the Web DUE technique suggests to divide mockups into Web page zones and, using a set of usability verification items, to check if the interface is usable or presents usability problems. To simulate interaction between the mockups and the user, and to support usability problems detection, we created the Mockup DUE tool. Both, the creation of the Web DUE technique and Mockup DUE tool, were supported by empirical validation. In this dissertation we present: (a) how we created the Web DUE technique based on the analysis of the results of a systematic mapping extension; (b) the feasibility study of the technique; (c) how the results from the empirical study helped in the creation of the Mockup DUE tool; (d) the feasibility study of the Mockup DUE tool; and (e) the evolution of the proposed technologies for the inspection of Web mockups. An artificial diet containing abalone silage and other ingredients was adjusted to different pH values (pH 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) to evaluate the effect of dietary pH on palatability for juvenile abalone. The pelleted diets were offered to abalone for 12h periods. Maximum food intake was observed for diets adjusted to pH 6 and 8, which also were the toughest, with high water stability (low percentage of dry matter loss). The lowest intake was observed for the pH 5 diet, which had the lowest water stability. A forward stepwise regression procedure showed that food intake can be predicted from a linear combination of toughness (P

Balancing markets are critical for the operation of power systems. TSOs use these markets for the acquisition of the resources needed for the balance between generation and demand on real-time (minute-to-minute operation). Balancing markets, since their beginning, were conceived to cope with real-time operation issues such as forecast errors on generation/demand and unplanned power outages due to a fault on generation units or transmission facility. Today, balancing markets are facing new challenges. One of them is the incorporation of a considerable amount of intermittent renewable generation on the generation mix, which could impose an increase on the volumes traded on balancing markets in order to ensure the correct performance of the system. Another issue is the tendency of displacing national energy markets by regional markets within which multi-area Day-Ahead trading is managed. This article presents the current designs of several European balancing markets, i.e. The Belgian, Swiss, German, Danish, Spanish, French, Italian and Dutch balancing markets. Since control reserves vary from one system to another, this article first presents a classification of the control reserves used within the surveyed systems. From the classification we proceed to the comparison of the assessment, remuneration (methods and structure), and cost recovery for secondary and tertiary reserves applied by each TSO.
