(1) Background: Amorphous drug systems are an intensively studied approach to overcome the insufficient bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs. Here, paper tablets were studied, which were made from cellulose-based paper matrices loaded with norfloxacin. Moreover, wet granulation was introduced as an additional processing step for improving the flowability of the solids, which is necessary when considering production on an industrial scale. (2) Methods: The possible impact of the wet granulation on the crystallinity of norfloxacin was studied by examining granulated and non-granulated samples. Crystallinity investigations were performed using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz TDS). (3) Results: THz TDS allowed for a more straightforward crystallinity assessment than XRD. Moreover, using THz TDS, it was possible to detect minor changes in the crystallinity of the API after the granulation, whereas this was not possible with the XRD analysis. (4) Conclusions: THz TDS results indicate a partial crystallization of norfloxacin due to the wet granulation. Depending on the formulation, THz TDS can serve as a beneficial and advantageous tool to determine the crystallinity of an API.

Within its frequency boundaries exist a broad variety of scientific disciplines that have presented, and continue to present, technical challenges to researchers. During the past 50 years, for instance, the demands of the scientific community have substantially evolved and with a need for advanced instrumentation to support radio astronomy, Earth observation, weather forecasting, security imaging, telecommunications, non-destructive device testing and much more. Furthermore, applications have required an emergence of technology from the laboratory environment to production-scale supply and in-the-field deployments ranging from harsh ground-based locations to deep space. In addressing these requirements, the research and development community has advanced related technology and bridged the transition between electronics and photonics that high frequency operation demands. The multidisciplinary nature of THz work was our stimulus for creating the 2017 THz Science and Technology Roadmap (Dhillon et al 2017 J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 50 043001). As one might envisage, though, there remains much to explore both scientifically and technically and the field has continued to develop and expand rapidly. It is timely, therefore, to revise our previous roadmap and in this 2023 version we both provide an update on key developments in established technical areas that have important scientific and public benefit, and highlight new and emerging areas that show particular promise. The developments that we describe thus span from fundamental scientific research, such as THz astronomy and the emergent area of THz quantum optics, to highly applied and commercially and societally impactful subjects that include 6G THz communications, medical imaging, and climate monitoring and prediction. Our Roadmap vision draws upon the expertise and perspective of multiple international specialists that together provide an overview of past developments and the likely challenges facing the field of THz science and technology in future decades. The document is written in a form that is accessible to policy makers who wish to gain an overview of the current state of the THz art, and for the non-specialist and curious who wish to understand available technology and challenges. A such, our experts deliver a ‘snapshot’ introduction to the current status of the field and provide suggestions for exciting future technical development directions. Ultimately, we intend the Roadmap to portray the advantages and benefits of the THz domain and to stimulate further exploration of the field in support of scientific research and commercial realisation.

Here we propose a 3D printed form-birefringent achromatic quarter-waveplate targeting the lower terahertz frequency range. The monolithically fabricated waveplate consists of three individual layers of different thickness and orientation of the stratified structure resulting in the achromatic response. The experimental results show that the performance of the fabricated waveplate fits the optimal behaviour within 5 % in terms of ellipticity and phase shift for frequencies between 75 GHz and 110 GHz.

Terahertz (THz) radiation has shown enormous potential for non-destructive inspection in many contexts. Here, we present a method for imaging defects in chocolate bars that can be extended to many other materials. Our method requires only a continuous wave (CW) monochromatic source and detector at relatively low frequencies (280 GHz) corresponding to a relatively long wavelength of 1.1 mm. These components are used to construct a common-path configuration enabling the capturing of several images of THz radiation diffracted by the test object at different axial depths. The captured diffraction-rich images are used to constrain the associated phase retrieval problem enabling full access to the wave field, i.e., real amplitude and phase distributions. This allows full-field diffraction-limited phase-contrast imaging. Thus, we experimentally demonstrate the possibility of identifying contaminant particles with dimensions comparable to the wavelength.

We demonstrate the first “nonlocal” pump-probe measurement using a scattering scanning near-field microscopy technique by laterally displacing the pump and probe spots. We observe nonlocal effects associated with carrier drift into the probe region.

Terahertz technology has demonstrated enormous potential for the analysis of biological systems and the diagnosis of some medical conditions, given its high sensitivity to detect water content. In previously published papers, effective medium theories are used to extract the water content from the terahertz measurements. When the dielectric functions of water and dehydrated bio-material are well known, the volumetric fraction of water can be left as the only free parameter in those effective medium theory models. While water complex permittivity is very well known, the dielectric functions of dehydrated tissues are normally measured for each individual application. In previous studies, it has been traditionally assumed that, unlike water, the dielectric function of the dehydrated tissues is temperature independent, measuring it only at room temperature. Yet, this is an aspect that has not been discussed and that is relevant in order to get THz technology closer to clinical and in-the-field applications. In this work, we present the characterization of the complex permittivity of dehydrated tissues; each studied at temperatures ranging from 20°C to 36.5°C. We studied samples of different organism classifications to have a wider confirmation of the results. We find that, in each case, the dielectric function changes of dehydrated tissues caused by temperature are smaller than for water across the same temperature interval. Yet, the changes in the dielectric function of the dehydrated tissue are not negligible and should, in many cases, be taken into account for the processing of terahertz signals that interact with biological tissues. While this study gives a first introduction into the probable relevancy of temperature-dependent optical behavior of biological samples, this work only focuses on the experimental proof for this relationship and will, therefore, not give a deeper analysis of how the underlying models have to be modified.

On site measurements of historically accumulated paint layers on the kiosk of Guadalajara were taken using a terahertz time-domain spectrometer. Sub-surface air gaps produced by delamination were found on various regions of the structure. The occurrence of the air gaps correlates with the position in the structure, being more frequent on the southeastern side.

We discuss the progress in the field of THz imaging based on time-domain spectroscopy during the last 20 years emphasizing several highlights. These include 3D mapping of the water distribution of plants, THz reflection imaging of samples with arbitrary shape, burn wound imaging and the early diagnosis of diabetic foot disease. These applications greatly benefit from the introduction of fibre-coupled THz time-domain system operated by rugged and portable femtosecond fibre-lasers. THz imaging is a versatile measurement method that has a plethora of practical applications and great promise for the future.

The future communication systems is naturally evolving towards higher carrier frequencies in order to satisfy the increasing demand for higher data rates. We investigate the dielectric and scattering properties of building materials across the THz band. This information will be of use to model indoor THz communication environments.

In this work, the largest THz-imaging study on humans is presented as the first clinical evaluation of a novel technique, named Moisture MApping by Terahertz, for the early diagnosis of the diabetic foot deterioration.

Quality control of primer layers in safety-relevant bonded joints is essential for the long-term stability of the such components. For this purpose, Terahertz time-domain imaging in reflection geometry is being used as a technology to inspect the multilayered structure and determine the thicknesses of the different layers with high resolution by applying sparse deconvolution.

SmartFilms® loaded with different amounts of indomethacin (IM) were prepared, compressed into tablets and investigated using THz TDS in transmission geometry. Corresponding physical mixtures were also prepared, transferred into tablets and investigated. Furthermore, complementary x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were performed. The results suggest that IM loaded in smartFilms was kept in its amorphous state for the lowest loading and recrystallized for higher loadings.

We present a study of the hydration shells of some carbohydrate polymers of commercial and biological importance, namely, agave fructans, inulin, and maltodextrin, employing terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. We observe that the hydration numbers calculated using terahertz spectroscopy are marginally higher than those of the calorimetric values. We attribute this discrepancy to the definition of hydration number, which in a way correlates with the physical process used to quantify it. The aqueous solutions show a non-proportional increase in the absorption coefficient and the hydration number, with a decrease in the carbohydrate concentration. We demonstrate that this behavior is consistent with the “chaotropic” or “structure breaking” model of the hydration shell around the carbohydrates. In addition, the study reveals that agave fructans and inulin have good hydration ability. Given the high glass transition temperature and good hydration ability, these carbohydrates may behave as good bio-protectants and hydrating additives for food and beverages.

Terahertz (THz) technology has experienced rapid development in the past two decades. Growing numbers of interdisciplinary applications are emerging, including materials science, physics, communications, and security as well as biomedicine. THz biophotonics involves studies applying THz photonic technology in biomedicine, which has attracted attention due to the unique features of THz waves, such as the high sensitivity to water, resonance with biomolecules, favorable spatial resolution, capacity to probe the water–biomolecule interactions, and nonionizing photon energy. Despite the great potential, THz biophotonics is still at an early stage of development. There is a lack of standards for instrumentation, measurement protocols, and data analysis, which makes it difficult to make comparisons among all the work published. In this article, we give a comprehensive review of the key findings that have underpinned research into biomedical applications of THz technology. In particular, we will focus on the advances made in general THz instrumentation and specific THz-based instruments for biomedical applications. We will also discuss the theories describing the interaction between THz light and biomedical samples. We aim to provide an overview of both basic biomedical research as well as pre-clinical and clinical applications under investigation. The paper aims to provide a clear picture of the achievements, challenges, and future perspectives of THz biophotonics.

We investigate the nonlinear optical effects induced by incident THz fields, varying its energy and width; leading to a transmission enhancement effect in doped semiconductors due to strong intervalley scattering, over the picosecond time scales. Besides that, we observed higher harmonics generation in the shortest pulse than in the larger ones. However, the THz transmission enhancement increased with the pulse's width.

Currently a significant fraction of the world energy is still produced from the combustion of mineral coal. The extraction of coal from mines is a relatively complex and dangerous activity that still requires the intervention of human miners, and therefore in order to minimize risks, automation of the coal mining process is desirable. An aspect that is still under investigation is potential techniques that can recognize on-line if the mineral being extracted from the mine is coal or if it is the surrounding rock. In this contribution we present the proof of concept of a method that has potential for recognition of the extraction debris from mining based on their terahertz transmission.

The worldwide shortage of medical-grade ventilators is a well-known issue, that has become one of the central topics during the COVID-19 pandemic. Given that these machines are expensive and have long lead times, one approach is to vacate them for patients in critical conditions while patients with mild to moderate symptoms are treated with stripped-down ventilators. We propose a mass-producible solution that can create such ventilators with minimum effort. The central part is a module that can be attached to CPAP machines and repurpose them as low-pressure ventilators. Here, we describe the concept and first measurements which underline the potential of our solution. Our approach may serve as a starting point for open-access ventilator technologies.

In this article, we propose variable-period diffraction gratings for terahertz frequencies. The design, fabrication and characterization of such devices are presented. Our measurements show the possibility to actively shift of the deflection angle for each frequency using this device. We also demonstrated that, when driven by a speaker, these variable gratings can be used for active beam steering with potential application in terahertz communications.

We study the use of three effective medium theory models, namely Maxwell–Garnett, Bruggeman, and Landau–Lifshitz–Looyenga, for the dielectric response of biological tissue in the terahertz band of the electromagnetic spectrum. In order to accomplish our objectives, we performed measurements on water-dehydrated basil binary mixtures encompassing the entire concentration range, and we further analyze the dielectric function with the models. Our results indicate that the Landau–Lifshitz–Looyenga and Bruggeman models provide marginally better fit to the experimentally measured dielectric function in the terahertz band. We further discuss the biological relevance of the models in the context of our experimental data based on their fundamental assumptions.

As part of a plethora of global efforts to minimize the negative effects of the SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) pandemic, we developed two different mechanisms that, after further development, could potentially be of use in the future in order to increase the capacity of ventilators with low-cost devices based on single-use-bag-valve mask systems. We describe the concept behind the devices and report a characterization of them. Finally, we make a description of the solved and unsolved challenges and propose a series of measures in order to better cope with future contingencies.

While terahertz imaging has been used before for the determination of water content in vegetative tissue, most studies have either presented measurements of the temporal evolution of water content at a single-point of the plant or have presented two-dimensional images of leaves, demonstrating the potential of the technique, but relatively little of such information has been used to support biologically relevant conclusions. In this article we introduce terahertz time-domain spectroscopic imaging as a technique for the determination of the three-dimensional distribution of water in succulent plant tissues. We present the first three-dimensional water mapping of an agave leaf, which demonstrates an unprecedented capability to study the water retention mechanisms within succulent plants. We found that agave leaves are composed of a low-hydration outer tissue layer, defined by the outermost layer of vascular tissue that surrounds a high-hydration tissue, the carbohydrate rich hydrenchyma. The findings are supported by histological images and the correlation between the water content and carbohydrate presence is consistent with recently published findings of a remarkably large hydration shell associated with agave fructans.

In this contribution, we demonstrate the first referenceless measurement of a THz wavefront by means of shear-interferometry. The technique makes use of a transmissive Ronchi phase grating to generate the shear. We fabricated the grating by mechanical machining of high-density polyethylene. At the camera plane, the +1 and −1 diffraction orders are coherently superimposed, generating an interferogram. We can adjust the shear by selecting the period of the grating and the focal length of the imaging system. We can also alter the direction of the shear by rotating the grating. A gradient-based iterative algorithm is used to reconstruct the wavefront from a set of shear interferograms. The results presented in this study demonstrate the first step towards wavefield sensing in the terahertz band without using a reference wave.

Very few real easel paintings have been scanned by means of terahertz time-domain imaging (THz-TDI) up to now. In this study, four different areas of an eighteenth century easel painting have been scanned by THz-TDI with the aim of proving useful information to the conservators for its imminent restoration treatment, owing to the complexity of its structure. Despite the unevenness of the layers composing the painting (lining canvas, original canvas, patching materials, and paint layers), the recorded THz dataset has been processed so that the THz images of the single layers composing the multilayered object have been clearly obtained. Relevant information about the painting structure, the presence of structural defects, overpainting, and the existence and extension of the original remains could have been determined. Infrared photography and X-ray radiography have been used for integrating the collected THz data and comparing the different outputs.

In this article, we present a series of hydration mapping images of the foot soles of diabetic and non-diabetic subjects measured by terahertz reflectance. In addition to the hydration images, we present a series of RYG-color-coded (red yellow green) images where pixels are assigned one of the three colors in order to easily identify areas in risk of ulceration. We also present the statistics of the number of pixels with each color as a potential quantitative indicator for diabetic foot-syndrome deterioration.

We present an experimental study of the terahertz emission from InxGa1−xAs epitaxial layers that were grown while varying the alloy fraction x. We observe the terahertz emission that is significantly different depending on the variation direction of the alloy fraction. We attribute the difference to the significant change of the band bending induced in the growth direction and to the position-dependent variation of the effective mass.

The use of plasmonic contact electrodes in a photoconductive terahertz source offers high optical-to-terahertz conversion efficiencies. The high efficiency is because plasmonic contact electrodes concentrate a large portion of the incident optical pump beam in close proximity to the contact electrodes. By reducing the average transport path length of the photo-generated carriers from the contact electrodes, a larger number of the photocarriers drift to the terahertz radiating elements of the photoconductive source within a sub-picosecond time scale. Therefore, higher terahertz radiation power levels are achieved compared to a similar photoconductive source without plasmonic contact electrodes. Au is a preferred metal for plasmonic contact electrodes because of the strong plasmonic enhancement factors it offers at near-infrared optical wavelengths. However, it requires an adhesion layer to stick well to most III–V semiconductor substrates used in photoconductive terahertz sources. In this paper, we analyze the impact of the Au adhesion layer on the performance of plasmonic photoconductive sources fabricated on a GaAs substrate. Our analysis suggests that Cr is the most promising adhesion layer for plasmonic contact electrodes. We show that the use of a Cr adhesion layer instead of Ti, which is used in previously demonstrated plasmonic photoconductive sources, offers up to an 80% enhancement in the generated terahertz powers. We report record-high terahertz power emissions of up to 6.7 mW from plasmonic photoconductive sources with Cr/Au contacts.

Two paintings on metal support have been imaged by terahertz time-domain imaging (THz-TDI) in a reflection setup and the X-ray radiographs were also recorded. The study was performed for testing the terahertz radiation (THz) as an imaging method alternative to X-ray radiography, which suffers several limitations in imaging paint layers on metal support. While the information regarding the paint layers of the paintings was almost lost in the records provided by the X-ray radiography, THz-TDI demonstrates the ability to provide important information about them, despite the presence of the underlying metal.

We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a q-plate with continuous birefringence variation at terahertz frequencies. This q-plate was fabricated by three-dimensional printing and is a simple solution for the generation of cylindrical vector beams. This device can find a number of applications in future terahertz technologies such as telecommunications.
