We investigate neutron star solutions in scalar-tensor theories of gravity with first-order derivative self-interactions in the action and in the matter coupling. We assess the robustness of the kinetic screening mechanism present in these theories against general conformal couplings to matter. The latter include ones leading to the classical Damour-Esposito-Far\`ese scalarization, as well as ones depending on the kinetic term of the scalar field. We find that kinetic screening always prevails over scalarization, and that kinetic couplings with matter enhance the suppression of scalar gradients inside the star even more, without relying on the non-linear regime. Fine tuning the kinetic coupling with the derivative self-interactions in the action allows one to partially cancel the latter, resulting in a weakening of kinetic screening inside the star. This effect represents a novel way to break screening mechanisms inside matter sources, and provides new signatures that might be testable with astrophysical observations., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. One of the major obstacles to testing alternative theories of gravity with gravitational-wave data from merging binaries of compact objects is the formulation of their field equations, which is often mathematically ill-suited for time evolutions. A possible way to address these delicate shortcomings is the fixing-the-equations approach, which was developed to control the behaviour of the high-frequency modes of the solutions and the potentially significant flow towards ultra-violet modes. This is particularly worrisome in gravitational collapse, where even black hole formation might be insufficient to shield regions of the spacetime where these pathologies might arise. Here, we focus (as a representative example) on scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, a theory which can lead to ill-posed dynamical evolutions, but with intriguing stationary black hole physics. We study the spherical collapse of a scalar pulse to a black hole in the fixing-the-equations approach, comparing the early stages of the evolution with the unfixed theory, and the later stages with its stationary limit. With this approach, we are able to evolve past problematic regions in the original theory, resolve black hole collapse and connect with the static black hole solutions. Our method can thus be regarded as providing a weak completion of the original theory, and the observed behaviour lends support for considering previously found black hole solutions as a natural outcome of collapse scenarios., 9+3 pages, 6 figures, matches version published in PRD

Effective field theories (EFT) of dark energy (DE) -- built to parameterise the properties of DE in an agnostic manner -- are severely constrained by measurements of the propagation speed of gravitational waves (GW). However, GW frequencies probed by ground-based interferometers lie around the typical strong coupling scale of the EFT, and it is likely that the effective description breaks down before even reaching that scale. We discuss how this leaves the possibility that an appropriate ultraviolet completion of DE scenarios, valid at scales beyond an EFT description, can avoid present constraints on the GW speed. Instead, additional constraints in the lower frequency LISA band would be harder to escape, since the energies involved are orders of magnitude lower. By implementing a method based on GW multiband detections, we show indeed that a single joint observation of a GW150914-like event by LISA and a terrestrial interferometer would allow one to constrain the speed of light and gravitons to match to within $10^{-15}$. Multiband GW observations can therefore firmly constrain scenarios based on the EFT of DE, in a robust and unambiguous way., 11 pages, 4 figures. Updated to match the version published in JCAP

Arun et al., The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) has the potential to reveal wonders about the fundamental theory of nature at play in the extreme gravity regime, where the gravitational interaction is both strong and dynamical. In this white paper, the Fundamental Physics Working Group of the LISA Consortium summarizes the current topics in fundamental physics where LISA observations of gravitational waves can be expected to provide key input. We provide the briefest of reviews to then delineate avenues for future research directions and to discuss connections between this working group, other working groups and the consortium work package teams. These connections must be developed for LISA to live up to its science potential in these areas., E. Scalar-tensor theories with first-derivative self interactions, known as $k$-essence, may provide interesting phenomenology on cosmological scales. On smaller scales, however, initial value evolutions (which are crucial for predicting the behavior of astrophysical systems, such as binaries of compact objects) may run into instabilities related to the Cauchy problem becoming potentially ill-posed. Moreover, on local scales the dynamics may enter in the nonlinear regime, which may lie beyond the range of validity of the infrared theory. Completions of $k$-essence in the ultraviolet, when they are known to exist, mitigate these problems, as they both render Cauchy evolutions well-posed at all times, and allow for checking the relation between nonlinearities and the low energy theory's range of validity. Here, we explore these issues explicitly by considering an ultraviolet completion to $k$-essence and performing vacuum 1+1 dynamical evolutions within it. The results are compared to those obtained with the low-energy theory, and with the low-energy theory suitably deformed with a phenomenological "fixing the equations" approach. We confirm that the ultraviolet completion does not incur in any breakdown of the Cauchy problem's well-posedness, and we find that evolutions agree with the results of the low-energy theory, when the system is within the regime of validity of the latter. Boson stars have attracted much attention in recent decades as simple, self-consistent models of compact objects and also as self-gravitating structures formed in some dark-matter scenarios. Direct detection of these hypothetical objects through electromagnetic signatures would be unlikely because their bosonic constituents are not expected to interact significantly with ordinary matter and radiation. However, binary boson stars might form and coalesce emitting a detectable gravitational wave signal, which might distinguish them from ordinary compact object binaries containing black holes and neutron stars. We study the merger of two boson stars by numerically evolving the fully relativistic Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations for a complex scalar field with a solitonic potential that generates very compact boson stars. Owing to the steep mass-radius diagram, we can study the dynamics and gravitational radiation from unequal-mass binary boson stars with mass ratios up to q≈23 without the difficulties encountered when evolving binary black holes with large mass ratios. Similar to the previously studied equal-mass case, our numerical evolutions of the merger produce either a nonspinning boson star or a spinning black hole, depending on the initial masses and on the binary angular momentum. We do not find any evidence of synchronized scalar clouds forming around either the remnant spinning black hole or around the remnant boson stars. Interestingly, in contrast to the equal-mass case, one of the mechanisms to dissipate angular momentum is now asymmetric and leads to large kick velocities (up to a few 104 km/s), which could produce wandering remnant boson stars. We also compare the gravitational wave signals predicted from boson star binaries with those from black hole binaries and comment on the detectability of the differences with ground interferometers., M. Measuring the quasi-normal mode~(QNM) spectrum emitted by a perturbed black-hole~(BH) --~also known as BH spectroscopy~-- provides an excellent opportunity to test the predictions of general relativity in the strong-gravity regime. We investigate the prospects and precision of BH spectroscopy in massive binary black hole ringdowns, one of the primary science objectives of the future Laser Interferometric Space Antenna~(LISA) mission. We simulate various massive binary BH population models, featuring competing prescriptions for the Delays between galaxy and BH mergers, for the impact of supernova feedback on massive BH growth, and for the initial population of high redshift BH seeds (light versus heavy seeds). For each of these scenarios, we compute the average number of expected events for precision BH spectroscopy using a Fisher-matrix analysis. We find that, for any heavy seed scenario, LISA will measure the dominant mode frequency within ${\cal O}(0.1) \%$ relative uncertainty and will estimate at least 3 independent QNM parameters within $1 \%$ error. The most optimistic heavy seed scenarios produce $\mathcal{O}(100)$ events with $1 \%$ measurability for 3 or more QNM quantities during LISA's operational time. On the other hand, light seed scenarios produce lighter merger remnants, which ring at frequencies higher than LISA's sensitivity. Interestingly, the light seed models give rise to a fraction of mergers in the band of Einstein Telescope, allowing for the measurement of 3 QNM parameters with $\sim 10 \%$ relative errors in approximately a few to ten events/yr. Binaries of relatively massive black holes like GW190521 have been proposed to form in dense gas environments, such as the disks of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), and they might be associated with transient electromagnetic counterparts. The interactions of this putative environment with the binary could leave a significant imprint at the low gravitational wave frequencies observable with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We show that LISA will be able to detect up to ten GW190521-like black hole binaries, with sky position errors $\lesssim1$ deg$^2$. Moreover, it will measure directly various effects due to the orbital motion around the supermassive black hole at the center of the AGN, especially the Doppler modulation and the Shapiro time delay. Thanks to a careful treatment of their frequency domain signal, we were able to perform the full parameter estimation of Doppler and Shapiro-modulated binaries as seen by LISA. We find that the Doppler and Shapiro effects will allow for measuring the AGN parameters (radius and inclination of the orbit around the AGN, central black hole mass) with up to percent-level precision. Properly modeling these low-frequency environmental effects is crucial to determine the binary formation history, as well as to avoid biases in the reconstruction of the source parameters and in tests of general relativity with gravitational waves., 13+4 pages, 7+1 figures v3: corrected typo in Fig 5

In this work we characterize the expected gravitational wave signal detectable by the planned space-borne interferometer LISA and the proposed next generation space-borne interferometer $\mu$Ares arising from a population of primordial black holes orbiting Sgr A*, the super-massive black hole at the Galactic center. Assuming that such objects indeed form the entire diffuse mass allowed by the observed orbit of S2 in the Galactic center, under the simplified assumption of circular orbits and monochromatic mass function, we assess the expected signal in gravitational waves, either from resolved and non-resolved sources. We estimate a small but non negligible chance of $\simeq$ 10% of detecting one single 1 M$_{\odot}$ primordial black hole with LISA in a 10-year-long data stream, while the background signal due to unresolved sources would essentially elude any reasonable chance of detection. On the contrary, $\mu$Ares, with a $\simeq$ 3 orders-of-magnitude better sensitivity at $\simeq$ 10$^{-5}$ Hz, would be able to resolve $\simeq$ 140 solar mass primordial black holes in the same amount of time, while the unresolved background should be observable with an integrated signal-to-noise ratio $\gtrsim$ 100. Allowing the typical PBH mass to be in the range 0.01-10 M$_{\odot}$ would increase LISA chance of detection to $\simeq$ 40% towards the lower limit of the mass spectrum. The observation of the shadow of the supermassive black hole M87$^{*}$ by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is sensitive to the spacetime geometry near the circular photon orbit and beyond, and it thus has the potential to test general relativity in the strong field regime. Obstacles to this program, however, include degeneracies between putative deviations from general relativity and both the description of the accretion flow and the uncertainties on "calibration parameters", such as e.g. the mass and spin of the black hole. In this work, we introduce a formalism, based on a principal component analysis, capable of reconstructing the black hole metric (i.e. the "signal") in an agnostic way, while subtracting the "foreground" due to the uncertainties in the calibration parameters and the modelling of the accretion flow. We apply our technique to simulated mock data for spherically symmetric black holes surrounded by a thick accretion disk. We propose a space-based interferometer surveying the gravitational wave (GW) sky in the milli-Hz to $\mu$-Hz frequency range. By the 2040s', the $\mu$-Hz frequency band, bracketed in between the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and pulsar timing arrays, will constitute the largest gap in the coverage of the astrophysically relevant GW spectrum. Yet many outstanding questions related to astrophysics and cosmology are best answered by GW observations in this band. We show that a $\mu$-Hz GW detector will be a truly overarching observatory for the scientific community at large, greatly extending the potential of LISA. We consider k-essence, a scalar-tensor theory with first-order derivative self-interactions that can screen local scales from scalar fifth forces, while allowing for sizeable deviations from general relativity on cosmological scales. We construct fully nonlinear static stellar solutions that show the presence of this screening mechanism, and we use them as initial data for simulations of stellar oscillations and gravitational collapse in spherical symmetry. We find that for k-essence theories of relevance for cosmology, the screening mechanism works in the case of stellar oscillation and suppresses the monopole scalar emission to undetectable levels. In collapsing stars, we find that the Cauchy problem, although locally well posed, can lead to diverging characteristic speeds for the scalar field. By introducing a "fixing equation"in the spirit of J. Cayuso et al. [Phys. Rev. D 96, 084043 (2017)PRVDAQ2470-001010.1103/PhysRevD.96.084043], inspired in turn by dissipative relativistic hydrodynamics, we manage to evolve collapsing neutron stars past the divergence of the characteristic speeds. We show that, in these systems, the screening mechanism is less efficient than for oscillating and static stars, because the collapsing star must shed away all of its scalar hair before forming a black hole. For k-essence theories of relevance for cosmology, the characteristic frequency of the resulting scalar monopole signal is too low for terrestrial detectors, but we conjecture that space-borne interferometers such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna might detect it if a supernova explodes in the Galaxy., We thank L. Scalar-tensor theories whose phenomenology differs significantly from general relativity on large (e.g. cosmological) scales do not typically pass local experimental tests (e.g. in the solar system) unless they present a suitable "screening mechanism". An example is provided by chameleon screening, whereby the local general relativistic behavior is recovered in high density environments, at least in weak-field and quasi-static configurations. Here, we test the validity of chameleon screening in strong-field and highly relativistic/dynamical conditions, by performing fully non-linear simulations of neutron stars subjected to initial perturbations that cause them to oscillate or even collapse to a black hole. We confirm that screened chameleon stars are stable to sufficiently small radial oscillations, but that the frequency spectrum of the latter shows deviations from the general relativistic predictions. Horava gravity is a proposal for completing general relativity in the ultraviolet by interactions that violate Lorentz invariance at very high energies. We focus on (2+1)-dimensional projectable Horava gravity, a theory which is renormalizable and perturbatively ultraviolet-complete, enjoying an asymptotically free ultraviolet fixed point. Adding a small cosmological constant to regulate the long distance behavior of the metric, we search for all circularly symmetric stationary vacuum solutions with vanishing angular momentum and approaching the de Sitter metric with a possible angle deficit at infinity. We find a two-parameter family of such geometries. Apart from the cosmological de Sitter horizon, these solutions generally contain another Killing horizon and should therefore be interpreted as black holes from the viewpoint of the low-energy theory. Contrary to naive expectations, their central singularity is not resolved by the higher derivative terms present in the action. It is unknown at present if these solutions form as a result of gravitational collapse. GW190521 is the compact binary with the largest masses observed to date, with at least one in the pair-instability gap. This event has also been claimed to be associated with an optical flare observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility in an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), possibly due to the post-merger motion of the merger remnant in the AGN gaseous disk. We show that the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will detect up to ten of such gas-rich black hole binaries months to years before their detection by LIGO/Virgo-like interferometers, localizing them in the sky within $\approx1$ deg$^2$. LISA will also measure directly deviations from purely vacuum and stationary waveforms, arising from gas accretion, dynamical friction, and orbital motion around the AGN's massive black hole (acceleration, strong lensing, and Doppler modulation). LISA will therefore be crucial to alert and point electromagnetic telescopes ahead of time on this novel class of gas-rich sources, to gain direct insight on their physics, and to disentangle environmental effects from corrections to General Relativity that may also appear in the waveforms at low frequencies., 6 pages, 4 figures. Electromagnetic observations have provided strong evidence for the existence of massive black holes in the center of galaxies, but their origin is still poorly known. Different scenarios for the formation and evolution of massive black holes lead to different predictions for their properties and merger rates. LISA observations of coalescing massive black hole binaries could be used to reverse engineer the problem and shed light on these mechanisms. In this paper, we introduce a pipeline based on hierarchical Bayesian inference to infer the mixing fraction between different theoretical models by comparing them to LISA observations of massive black hole mergers. By testing this pipeline against simulated LISA data, we show that it allows us to accurately infer the properties of the massive black hole population as long as our theoretical models provide a reliable description of the Universe. Following up on a recent analysis by Psaltis et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 141104 (2020)], we show that the observed shadow size of M87$^*$ can be used to unambiguously and robustly constrain the black hole geometry in the vicinity of the circular photon orbit. Constraints on the post-Newtonian weak-field expansion of the black hole's metric are instead more subtle to obtain and interpret, as they rely on combining the shadow-size measurement with suitable theoretical priors. We provide examples showing that post-Newtonian constraints resulting from shadow-size measurements should be handled with extreme care. The timing of millisecond pulsars has long been used as an exquisitely precise tool for testing the building blocks of general relativity, including the strong equivalence principle and Lorentz symmetry. Observations of binary systems involving at least one millisecond pulsar have been used to place bounds on the parameters of Einstein-{\ae}ther theory, a gravitational theory that violates Lorentz symmetry at low energies via a preferred and dynamical time threading of the spacetime manifold. However, these studies did not cover the region of parameter space that is still viable after the recent bounds on the speed of gravitational waves from GW170817/GRB170817A. The restricted coverage was due to limitations in the methods used to compute the pulsar sensitivities, which parameterize violations of the strong-equivalence principle in these systems. We extend here the calculation of pulsar sensitivities to the parameter space of Einstein-{\ae}ther theory that remains viable after GW170817/GRB170817A. A powerful technique to calculate gravitational radiation from binary systems involves a perturbative expansion: if the masses of the two bodies are very different, the "small" body is treated as a point particle of mass $m_p$ moving in the gravitational field generated by the large mass $M$, and one keeps only linear terms in the small mass ratio $m_p/M$. This technique usually yields finite answers, which are often in good agreement with fully nonlinear numerical relativity results, even when extrapolated to nearly comparable mass ratios. Here we study two situations in which the point-particle approximation yields a divergent result: the instantaneous flux emitted by a small body as it orbits the light ring of a black hole, and the total energy absorbed by the horizon when a small body plunges into a black hole. By integrating the Teukolsky (or Zerilli/Regge-Wheeler) equations in the frequency and time domains we show that both of these quantities diverge. We find that these divergences are an artifact of the point-particle idealization, and are able to interpret and regularize this behavior by introducing a finite size for the point particle. International audience; Hořava gravity breaks boost invariance in the gravitational sector by introducing a preferred time foliation. The dynamics of this preferred slicing is governed, in the low-energy limit suitable for most astrophysical applications, by three dimensionless parameters α, β and λ. The first two of these parameters are tightly bound by Solar System and gravitational-wave propagation experiments, but λ remains relatively unconstrained (0≤λ≲0.01–0.1). We restrict here to the parameter-space region defined by α=β=0 (with λ kept generic), which in a previous paper we showed to be the only one where black hole solutions are nonpathological at the universal horizon, and we focus on possible violations of the strong equivalence principle in systems involving neutron stars. We compute neutron star “sensitivities,” which parametrize violations of the strong equivalence principle at the leading post-Newtonian order, and find that they vanish identically, like in the black hole case, for α=β=0 and generic λ≠0. This implies that no violations of the strong equivalence principle (neither in the conservative sector nor in gravitational-wave fluxes) can occur at the leading post-Newtonian order in binaries of compact objects, and that data from binary pulsars and gravitational interferometers are unlikely to further constrain λ.

At low redshift, massive black holes are found in the centers of almost all large elliptical galaxies, and also in many lower-mass systems. Their evolution is believed to be inextricably entangled with that of their host galaxies. On the one hand, the galactic environment provides gas for the black holes to grow via accretion and shine as active galactic nuclei. On the other hand, massive black holes are expected to backreact on the galactic dynamics, by injecting energy in their surroundings via jets or radiative feedback. Moreover, if galaxies and dark-matter halos form hierarchically, from small systems at high redshift coalescing into larger ones at more recent epochs, massive black holes may also merge, potentially generating gravitational-wave signals detectable by present and future experiments. In this Chapter, we discuss the predictions of current astrophysical models for the mergers of massive black holes in the mHz frequency band of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and in the nHz frequency band of pulsar-timing array experiments. We focus in particular on the astrophysical uncertainties affecting these predictions, including the poorly known dynamical evolution of massive black hole pairs at separations of hundreds of parsecs; the possible formation of 'stalled' binaries at parsec separations ('final-parsec problem'); and the effect of baryonic physics (e.g. SN feedback) on the growth of massive black holes. We show that nHz-band predictions are much more robust than in the mHz band, and comment on the implications of this fact for LISA and pulsar-timing arrays.

Gravitational theories differing from General Relativity may explain the accelerated expansion of the Universe without a cosmological constant. However, to pass local gravitational tests, a "screening mechanism" is needed to suppress, on small scales, the fifth force driving the cosmological acceleration. We consider the simplest of these theories, i.e. a scalar-tensor theory with first-order derivative self-interactions, and study isolated (static and spherically symmetric) non-relativistic and relativistic stars. We produce screened solutions and use them as initial data for non-linear numerical evolutions in spherical symmetry. We find that these solutions are stable under large initial perturbations, as long as they do not cause gravitational collapse. When gravitational collapse is triggered, the characteristic speeds of the scalar evolution equation diverge, even before apparent black-hole or sound horizons form. Self-gravitating non-topological solitons whose potential admits multiple vacua are promising candidates for exotic compact objects. Such objects can arise in several extensions of the Standard Model and could be produced in the early Universe. In this work, we focus on objects made from complex scalars (gravitating Q-balls/soliton boson stars), deriving analytic solutions in spherical symmetry and comparing them with fully numerical ones. In the high-compactness limit we find that these objects present an effectively linear equation of state, thus saturating the Buchdahl limit with the causality constraint. Far from that limit, these objects behave either as flat space-time Q-balls or (in the low-compactness limit) as mini boson stars stabilized by quantum pressure. We study the vacuum Cauchy problem for K-essence, i.e. cosmologically relevant scalar-tensor theories that involve first-order derivative self-interactions, and which pass all existing gravitational wave bounds. We restrict to spherical symmetry and show that there exists a large class of theories for which no breakdown of the Cauchy problem occurs outside apparent black hole horizons, even in the presence of scalar shocks/caustics, except for a small set of initial data sufficiently close to critical black hole collapse. We characterise these problematic initial data, and show that they lead to large or even diverging (coordinate) speeds for the characteristic curves. TianQin is a planned space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory consisting of three earth orbiting satellites with an orbital radius of about $10^5~{\rm km}$. The satellites will form a equilateral triangle constellation the plane of which is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. TianQin aims to detect GWs between $10^{-4}~{\rm Hz}$ and $1~{\rm Hz}$ that can be generated by a wide variety of important astrophysical and cosmological sources, including the inspiral of Galactic ultra-compact binaries, the inspiral of stellar-mass black hole binaries, extreme mass ratio inspirals, the merger of massive black hole binaries, and possibly the energetic processes in the very early universe or exotic sources such as cosmic strings. In order to start science operations around 2035, a roadmap called the 0123 plan is being used to bring the key technologies of TianQin to maturity, supported by the construction of a series of research facilities on the ground. Two major projects of the 0123 plan are being carried out. In this process, the team has created a new generation $17~{\rm cm}$ single-body hollow corner-cube retro-reflector which has been launched with the QueQiao satellite on 21 May 2018; a new laser ranging station equipped with a $1.2~{\rm m}$ telescope has been constructed and the station has successfully ranged to all the five retro-reflectors on the Moon; and the TianQin-1 experimental satellite has been launched on 20 December 2019 and the first round result shows that the satellite has exceeded all of its mission requirements., 16 pages, 1 figure, invited article to a special section in PTEP

Based on the rate of resolved stellar origin black hole and neutron star mergers measured by LIGO and Virgo, it is expected that these detectors will also observe an unresolved Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB) by the time they reach design sensitivity. Since the same binaries observed by LIGO and Virgo pass through the LISA mHz frequency band at an earlier stage of their orbital evolution,it is foreseen that their SGWB will also be observable by LISA with Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) $\sim 53$. Unlike the stochastic signal from Galactic white dwarf binaries, for which a subtraction is expected to be possible by exploiting its yearly modulation (induced by the motion of the LISA constellation), the background from unresolved stellar origin black hole and neutron star binaries acts as a foreground for other stochastic signals of cosmological or astrophysical origin, which may also be present in the LISA band. Here, we employ a principal component analysis to model and extract an additional hypothetical SGWB in the LISA band, without making any a priori assumptions on its spectral shape. At the same time, we account for the presence of the foreground from stellar origin black holes and neutron stars, as well as for possible uncertainties in the LISA noise calibration. We find that our technique leads to a linear problem and is therefore suitable for fast and reliable extraction of SGWBs with SNR up to ten times weaker than the LIGO/Virgo foreground, quite independently of their spectral shape., Matches published version and incorporates minor changes to be published as erratum. 18 pages, 4 figures, 2 appendixes

We investigate the ability of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) to measure the center of mass acceleration of stellar-origin black hole binaries emitting gravitational waves. Our analysis is based on the idea that the acceleration of the center of mass induces a time variation in the redshift of the gravitational wave, which in turn modifies its waveform. We confirm that while the cosmological acceleration is too small to leave a detectable imprint on the gravitational waveforms observable by LISA, larger peculiar accelerations may be measurable for sufficiently long lived sources. We focus on stellar mass black hole binaries, which will be detectable at low frequencies by LISA and near coalescence by ground based detectors. These sources may have large peculiar accelerations, for instance, if they form in nuclear star clusters or in AGN accretion disks. If that is the case, we find that in an astrophysical population calibrated to the LIGO-Virgo observed merger rate, LISA will be able to measure the peculiar acceleration of a small but significant fraction of the events if the mission lifetime is extended beyond the nominal duration of 4 years. In this scenario LISA will be able to assess whether black hole binaries form close to galactic centers, particularly in AGN disks, and will thus help discriminate between different formation mechanisms. Although for a nominal 4 years LISA mission the peculiar acceleration effect cannot be measured, a consistent fraction of events may be biased by strong peculiar accelerations which, if present, may imprint large systematic errors on some waveform parameters. Photons propagating in a plasma acquire an effective mass $\mu$, which is given by the plasma frequency and which scales with the square root of the plasma density. As noted previously by Conlon and Herdeiro, for electron number densities $n_e\sim 10^{-3}$ cm$^{-3}$ (such as those measured in the interstellar medium) the effective mass induced by the plasma is $\mu \sim 10^{-12}$ eV. This would cause superradiant instabilities for spinning black holes of a few tens of solar masses. An obvious problem with this picture is that densities in the vicinity of black holes are much higher than in the interstellar medium because of accretion. We have conducted numerical simulations of the superradiant instability in spinning black holes surrounded by a plasma with density increasing closer to the black hole, in order to mimic the effect of accretion. While we confirm that superradiant instabilities appear for plasma densities that are sufficiently low near the black hole, we find that astrophysically realistic accretion disks are unlikely to trigger such instabilities., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures. We consider the observation of stellar-mass black holes binaries with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Preliminary results based on Fisher information matrix analyses have suggested that gravitational waves from those sources could be very sensitive to possible deviations from the theory of general relativity and from the strong equivalence principle during the low-frequency binary inspiral. We perform a full Markov Chain Monte Carlo Bayesian analysis to quantify the sensitivity of these signals to two phenomenological modifications of general relativity, namely a putative gravitational dipole emission and a non-zero mass for the graviton, properly accounting for the detector's response. Moreover, we consider a scenario where those sources could be observed also with Earth-based detectors, which should measure the coalescence time with precision better than $1 \ {\rm ms}$. This constraint on the coalescence time further improves the bounds that we can set on those phenomenological deviations from general relativity. We show that tests of dipole radiation and the graviton's mass should improve respectively by seven and half an order(s) of magnitude over current bounds. Systems consisting of a massive black hole and a stellar-origin compact object (CO), known as extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs), are of great significance for space-based gravitational-wave detectors, as they will allow for testing gravitational theories in the strong field regime, and for checking the validity of the black hole no-hair theorem. In this work, we present a calculation of the EMRI rate and parameter estimation capabilities of the TianQin observatory, for various astrophysical models for these sources. We find that TianQin can observe EMRIs involving COs with mass of 10$M_\odot$ up to redshift $\sim2$. We also find that detections could reach tens or hundreds per year in the most optimistic astrophysical scenarios. Intrinsic parameters are expected to be recovered to within fractional errors of $\sim 10^{-6}$, while typical errors on the luminosity distance and sky localization are 10% and 10 deg$^2$, respectively. TianQin observation of EMRIs can also constrain possible deviations from the Kerr quadrupole moment to within fractional errors $\lesssim10^{-4}$. We also find that a network of multiple detectors would allow for improvements in both detection rates (by a factor $\sim 1.5$ -$3$) and in parameter estimation precision (20-fold improvement for the sky localization and fivefold improvement for the other parameters)., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

These images were produced using 230 GHz observations performed in 2017 April. Additional observations are required to investigate the persistence of the primary image feature- A ring with azimuthal brightness asymmetry- A nd to quantify the image variability on event horizon scales. To address this need, we analyze M87* data collected with prototype EHT arrays in 2009, 2011, 2012, and 2013. While these observations do not contain enough information to produce images, they are sufficient to constrain simple geometric models. We develop a modeling approach based on the framework utilized for the 2017 EHT data analysis and validate our procedures using synthetic data. Applying the same approach to the observational data sets, we find the M87* morphology in 2009-2017 to be consistent with a persistent asymmetric ring of ∼40 μas diameter. The position angle of the peak intensity varies in time. In particular, we find a significant difference between the position angle measured in 2013 and 2017. These variations are in broad agreement with predictions of a subset of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations. We show that quantifying the variability across multiple observational epochs has the potential to constrain the physical properties of the source, such as the accretion state or the black hole spin. © 2020 The Author(s). Theories of gravity extending or modifying general relativity typically allow for black hole solutions different from the Schwarzschild/Kerr geometries. Electromagnetic observations have been used to place constraints on parametrized deviations from the Schwarzschild/Kerr metrics, in an effort to gain insight on the underlying gravitational theory. In this work, we show that observations of the gravitational quasi-normal modes by existing and future interferometers can be used to bound the same parametrized black hole metrics that are constrained by electromagnetic observations (e.g. by the Event Horizon Telescope). We argue that our technique is most sensitive to changes in the background black hole metric near the circular photon orbit, and that it is robust against the changes that a gravitational theory differing from general relativity necessarily introduces in the equations for the gravitational perturbations. We revisit the predictions for the merger rate of massive black hole binaries detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and their background signal for pulsar-timing arrays. We focus on the effect of the delays between the merger of galaxies and the final coalescence of black hole binaries, and on supernova feedback on the black hole growth. By utilizing a semi-analytic galaxy formation model, not only do we account for the driving the evolution of binaries at separations $\lesssim 1$ pc (gas-driven migration, stellar hardening and triple/quadruple massive black hole systems), but we also improve on previous studies by accounting for the time spent by black hole pairs from kpc down to pc separation. We also include the effect of supernova feedback, which may eject gas from the nuclear region of low-mass galaxies, thus hampering the growth of black holes via accretion and suppressing their orbital migration in circumbinary disks. Despite including these novel physical effects, we predict that the LISA detection rate should still be $\gtrsim 2 \mbox{yr}^{-1}$, irrespective of the model for the black hole seeds at high redshifts. Scenarios where black holes form from $\sim100 M_\odot$ seeds are more significantly impacted by supernova feedback. We also find that for detectable events, the merging black holes typically have mass ratios between $\sim 0.1$ and $1$. Predictions for the stochastic background in the band of pulsar-timing array experiments are instead rather robust, and show only a mild dependence on the model., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures and 2 tables. We study scalar fields in a black hole background and show that, when the scalar is suitably coupled to curvature, rapid rotation can induce a tachyonic instability. This instability, which is the hallmark of spontaneous scalarization in the linearized regime, is expected to be quenched by nonlinearities and endow the black hole with scalar hair. Hence, our results demonstrate the existence of a broad class of theories that share the same stationary black hole solutions with general relativity at low spins, but which exhibit black hole hair at sufficiently high spins ($a/M\gtrsim 0.5$).
