1. [The plants of I Promessi Sposi recount Alessandro Manzoni]

Abstract: If we focus on the wild plants described by Alessandro Manzoni in the novel I Promessi Sposi, it is possible to explore two important dimensions that have received little attention, namely the imaginary but realistic reconstruction of a 17th-century plant landscape and the writer's knowledge of wild flora. Manzoni's botanical expertise was enhanced in the management of the estate in Brusuglio (Milan), where his duties as a farmer put him in daily contact with plants and weeds of all kinds, good or bad for the progress of the estate, which the writer observed with curiosity and attention. Benefiting from this experience, the writer transposed 22 of the different wild species known to him into his novel to give each of them a setting and landscape role in the scenarios of the story's events. Today, these plants tell us about him. [Article in Italian]

4. Primula ×chignolensis (Ericales: Primulaceae), a new primrose hybrid discovered in Val Seriana (northern Italy)

Abstract: A new hybrid of primrose discovered fifteen years ago in the locality Bivacco La Plana, Pre-Alps of Bergamo, above Chignolo, a hamlet of the municipality of Oneta, later also confirmed for the crest of Mount Alben, always in the same municipality, is here described. The parental species turn out to be Primula albenensis Banfi & Ferl. and P. auricula L., the former endemic to the mountains of Bergamo (Mount Alben, Mount Aralalta group and the Ancogno Valley), the latter a European orophyte, here coexisting often together on limestone faces. The new finding shows constant morphology in its stands, and there is no evidence of either "hybrid swarming" or introgression to exclude the total sterility of the population and this occurrence should be considered result of a process of inter parentes hybrid speciation (nothospecies) deserving of taxonomic recognition.

Abstract: The article, based on printed material about Italian and foreign gardens and on unpublished documents preserved in different Milanese archives, aims at reconstructing the history of the Brera Botanical Garden in the period between 1982 and 2001. This is a period of particular interest in that it illustrates how the Lombard and State institutions, after leaving the Garden in a state of neglect for many decades, went on, while deciding to restore it, to fail to understand its value, risking with their plans to misrepresent its history. However, over the years, these plans were dropped and replaced with a restoration job carried out according to the most modern historical-scientific guidelines of The Florence Charter (1982). Thanks to this restoration, the Garden was enabled to redefine its role and vocation.

Abstract: Despite the wide amount of scientific contributions published on alien plant species, their diffusion dynamics, and their interactions with native taxa, it is increasingly difficult to slow down their spreading and their negative impact on habitats. Last recent years, in fact, a sharp rise in the number of new alien plant taxa introduced in Italy and Europe has been recorded. The aim of this work is to investigate most of the Italian territory in order to verify whether this alarming trend is still underway. Specimen collections and/or observations of alien plants have been performed in as many as 12 Italian regions. All the collected specimens are stored in public or private herbaria. Taxa have been identified according to the literature from the countries of origin of the investigated taxa, while the nomenclature followed the current international references. Updates on 106 taxa are reported. In particular, among 117 new records, 89 are first records, 27 are changes to status and there is 1 extinction. Seven new taxa for Italian alien flora are reported, two of which are new to Europe. The administrative regions with the highest number of records are Calabria (48), Sardegna (17) and Sicilia (15). Five of the surveyed taxa, for the first time, have been considered invasive aliens to Italian territory. The unfrequent amount of original results provided by this work, over the simple importance of data itself, proves how floristic investigation, still today, represents one of the most effective tools in broadening the current knowledge about alien taxa and their dynamics.

11. Remnants of naturalness in a reclaimed land of central Italy

Abstract: Wetlands are among the most fragile habitats on Earth and have often undergone major environmental changes. As a study case in this context, the present work aims at increasing the floristic knowledge of a reclaimed land now turned into an agricultural lowland with scarce patches of natural habitats. The study area is named Piana di Rosia, and it is located in southern Tuscany (Italy). The compiled checklist consists of 451 specific and subspecific taxa of vascular plants. The life-form spectrum shows a predominance of hemicryptophytes, followed by therophytes. The chorological spectrum highlights a co-dominance of Euri-Mediterranean and Eurasian species along with many widely distributed species. The checklist includes seven species of conservation concern, three Italian endemics (Crocus etruscus Parl., Polygala vulgaris L. subsp. valdarnensis (Fiori) Arrigoni, and Scabiosa uniseta Savi), 41 alien species, 21 segetal species, and 11 aquatic macrophytes of which five helophytes and six hydrophytes. This study suggests that irreversible land-use changes in wetlands can lead towards a simplification of the flora. However, despite the deep transformations that the former wetland has undergone, the presence of some aquatic and protected taxa is interesting. From a conservation point of view, the natural value of this agricultural area could be enhanced and its current management partly reconsidered, thus preserving the remnants of naturalness present.

Abstract: According to recent molecular phylogenetic studies the Papaver species belonging to P. sect. Argemonidium should be transferred in the genus Roemeria, and species of P. sect. Meconella should be treated as a distinct genus. Accordingly, the new genus Oreomecon is here established, seven new combinations are proposed and one name is typified. Furthermore, the correct names in Roemeria for the eleven, currently accepted, Papaver species in the Euro-Mediterranean area are provided, including nine new combinations.

Abstract: This work aims to increase the floristic knowledge of southern Tuscany by means of a floristic investigation which took place in the Miniera di Murlo (southern Tuscany, Italy). The study area, located in the province of Siena, has an extension of 2.26 km2 and hosts a heterogeneity of habitats like rocky outcrops, woodlands, meadows and riparian formations. The prevalent geological type is an acidic sedimentary rock known as diaspri formation (jasper). The checklist of vascular flora consists of 501 taxa and includes six endemics and 13 alien species, among which Vitis labrusca is a newly-found species for the Province of Siena along with the native Rosa balsamica and Rosa squarrosa. The most interesting species, such as Anthoxanthum aristatum, Gagea bohemica, Paragymnopteris marantae, Saxifraga granulata, and Teesdalia coronopifolia, are found on acidic rocks. Species of the Italian Red List, such as Ruscus aculeatus, and species of Regional conservation interest, such as Centaurea aplolepa subsp. carueliana, Ervilia loiseleurii, and Vicia nigricans, were recorded. The chorological spectrum reveals a dominance of Mediterranean species indicating warm climate conditions and mild winters whereas the life-form spectrum shows a slight dominance of hemicryptophytes followed by therophytes. However, a clear dominance of one life-form type over the other is lacking, since the acidic and dry rocky substrate partially compensates for the humidity provided by the stream. This study highlights the relevant floristic value of the Miniera di Murlo area and supports the possible creation of a protected area or its inclusion in the adjacent one.

Abstract: The inventory of the taxa collected during the annual field trip of the working group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution of the Italian Botanical Society is reported. The field trip was held in 2016 along the Velino and Aterno valleys located between Lazio and Abruzzo administrative regions (central Italy). The flora documented for the studied area amounts to 629 specific and subspecific taxa (including two hybrids) belonging to 300 genera and 69 families. Thirty-eight taxa are endemic to Italy, and only 16 alien taxa were detected. Thirty-eight taxa are included in the IUCN Red List of the Italian Flora. Twenty-four taxa have to be considered as floristic novelties because either new or confirmed for the regional flora of Lazio or Abruzzo. In particular, 15 taxa are new and 6 are confirmed for Lazio. Regarding Abruzzo, 2 taxa are new for the regional flora and one is confirmed. Furthermore, the alien status in Lazio has been updated for one taxon.

Abstract: Echinochloa esculenta and E. frumentacea are crops derived from the wild E. crus-galli and E. colona respectively. They are currently treated at the species rank, although different infraspecific ranks have been proposed for both taxa in the past. After some considerations on domestication of Japanese and Indian millets, we propose to follow the concept by Harlan and De Wet, which implies the subspecific rank for the domesticated plants. Accordingly, the existing combination for Echinochloa esculenta is recovered and a new combination for E. frumentacea is here established.

Abstract: This paper focuses on the relationship between Alexander von Humboldt, the famous German explorer-naturalist and Filippo Parlatore, botanist from Palermo (Sicily, Italy) in the field of botanical geography. Our considerations are based on three letters written by Humboldt to Parlatore in May 1851 and two letters with attachments written by Parlatore in answer to Humboldt in May 1851 and June 1852. The former are preserved in the Biblioteca comunale di Palermo (Palermo City Library) and the latter in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library). On reading the correspondence it can be inferred how, on the one hand, Humboldt asked Parlatore for verification on some important questions of botanical geography that he intended to cover in the second part (never published) of volume five of his Kosmos, and how, on the other hand, Parlatore diverged in his answers from Humboldt’s intent to search for universal laws to explain the distribution of plants on the planet. In fact, Parlatore was engaging in new lines of research, which, though stemming from Humboldt, were moving towards a modern twodimensional interpretation of natural plant communities according to which vegetation and flora, though interacting, are distinct realities and require different methods of study. The paper includes a portrait of Parlatore and one of Humboldt, a taxonomic table of the plants mentioned by the two scientists in their correspondence and illustrations of a selection of the same plants.

Abstract: In 2014, the annual field trip of the working group for Floristics, Systematics, and Evolution of the Italian Botanical Society was held in Piemonte (northern Italy), at the head of the Po Valley. This valley, at whose extremity is located the Monviso (3,841 m a.s.l.), belongs to the Cottian Alps about which very little is known from a floristic point of view. An inventory of the taxa of vascular plants collected during the field trip is reported here. The research led to the identification of 3,546 exsiccata, kept in nine public and nine private collections. A total of 669 taxa belonging to 79 plant families were recorded. Six taxa resulted endemic to Italy and three exclusive to Piemonte, while only nine alien species were detected; six taxa are new and five confirmed for the regional flora.

It was held in 2013 along the Maddalena Mountains a mountain ridge of the southern Apennines located between the Basilicata and Campania administrative regions (southern Italy) considered as being poorly characterized in terms of vascular flora. A total of 701 units belonging to 74 plant families were recorded including two varieties and four hybrids.Thirty-five taxa resulted endemic to Italy and only 11 alien species were detected while 36 taxa are new or confirmed for the regional floras of Basilicata and/or Campania. In particular 12 taxa are new for Basilicata while four are confirmed. Regarding Campania 14 taxa resulted new for the regional flora and five were confirmed.

Abstract: Airport areas have, among flight infrastructures, large green spaces which, not having production purposes, are managed through interventions of minimal disturbance on habitats, with potentially positive effects on the conservation of biodiversity. The checklist of the vascular flora of the airport of Milan Malpensa is here presented. This airport extends for 12.44 km2 in the southwestern portion of the province of Varese (Lombardy, Italy) in the administrative districts of Cardano al Campo, Casorate Sempione, Ferno, Lonate Pozzolo, Samarate, Somma Lombardo and Vizzola Ticino. The collection campaigns were carried out between August 2010 and September 2018. The specimens collected are now kept in the herbarium facility of the Natural History Museum of Milan (MSNM). The floristic list was organized following the arrangement and the nomenclature of the recently published Italian flora checklists. It includes 395 taxa of specific and subspecific rank (9.35% of the entire flora of Lombardy) belonging to 247 genera and 72 families. The native taxa are 318, while the alien ones are 77. The native/aliens ratio is comparable to the one calculated at the regional level (4.10 vs. 4.42). The endemic contingent includes two taxa: Centaurea nigrescens subsp. pinnatifida, Italian endemic, and Euphrasia cisalpina, endemic to the Alps. The Malpensa airport is still the only site confirmed at the national level for Lepidium heterophyllum and, at the regional level, for Festuca muralis and Euphrasia cisalpina. The ecological characteristics and the data analysis will be discussed in a second contribution.

Abstract: Elymus s. l. is a critical topic on which only a little light has begun to be made regarding phylogenetic reticulation, genome evolution and consistency of genera. In Italy, Elymus s. l. officially includes ten species (nine native, one alien) and some well-established and widespread hybrids generally not treated as little or nothing is known of them. In this paper fourteen species (with two subspecies) and six hybrids are taken into account and the following seven new combinations are proposed: Thinopyrum acutum (DC.) Banfi, Thinopyrum corsicum (Hack.) Banfi, Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth and Dewey subsp. pouzolzii (Godr.) Banfi, Thinopyrum obtusiflorum (DC.) Banfi, Thinopyrum ×duvalii (Loret) Banfi, ×Thinoelymus drucei (Stace) Banfi, ×Thinoelymus mucronatus (Opiz) Banfi. Some observations are provided for each subject and a key to species, subspecies and hybrids is made available.

Abstract: Today’s plant phylogeny more and more deals with ranks from the genus down, so changes in current taxonomy and nomenclature are frequently requested. For this reason, referring to the Euro+Med flora, we take here into account 20 taxa and recover the following forgotten nomenclatural combinations: Bidens atrosanguinea (Hook.) Abstract: Despite being firmly attached to the ground, plants move, just like other organisms. Spores and seeds constitute the usual vehicle, however every journey made by this dispersive structure, even their simple fall under gravitational pull, is conditioned by the random nature of natural processes and does not necessary lead to success. This applies both to natural dissemination, be it mediated (by air, water, animals, etc.) or autonomous (passive fall, active expulsion), and, particularly in this day and age, when dispersion is in some way associated with Homo sapiens. In this last case, it is essential to make a distinction between wild and cultivated, remembering that the dead end of any crop is reached when, due to guided selection, the plant loses all capacity for autonomous life. The whole of human history is characterised by plant transfers (opportunist species) that were largely unplanned and in part outside human control, taking root in the natural environment thereby damaging and deteriorating biodiversity, human economics and health. These transfers increased with the discovery of America as a consequence of the contacts with the colonies established by Europe all over the world. The analysis of the success of international plant transfers, be they voluntary and involuntary, allows us to identify their causes, measure their development and build a general model from which to ascertain the chances offered to each new appearance for its future in foreign soil. Invasiveness indicates the “excess” of an alien presence and figures negatively as an increasingly pressing problem for the future of our planet.

Abstract: Here, we reconstruct the history of the Botanic Garden of Brera of Milan from the Restoration of the Austrian Empire up to the early years of the Kingdom of Italy, when in 1863 the garden passed hands from the Liceo di Sant’Alessandro to the Istituto Tecnico Superiore of Milan. The reconstruction is based mostly on unpublished documentation preserved at the Archivio di Stato of Milan, the Biblioteca Braidense of Milan, the libraries of the Museo di Storia Naturale of Milan and the Archivio di Stato of Milan, the Archivio del Liceo Classico Statale Cesare Beccaria of Milan, the historical archives of the Politecnico of Milan, the Biblioteca di Biologia Vegetale, Dipartimento di Scienze della Vita e Biologia dei Sistemi, University of Turin, the Autografoteca Botanica of the Botanical Garden of the University of Modena, and the library of the Botanical Garden of the University of Padova. Overall, the period was one of slow decline for the Botanic Garden of Brera, against which successive directors – namely, Antonio Bodei, Francesco Enrico Acerbi, Giuseppe Balsamo Crivelli, Vincenzo Masserotti and Giustino Arpesani – combatted in vain. In particular, Balsamo Crivelli fought with great passion for many years to keep the level of the Botanic Garden of Brera at a satisfactory level, but he did not achieve the desired aim. However, he complied a partial list of the garden’s plants, of which an updated version is presented here.

Abstract: Recent phylogenetic investigations about Jasminum s.l. have shown that species possessing both alternate leaves and yellow flowers (sect. Alternifolia) constitute a clade (monophylum) that is sister to all the other sections of the genus or even to Jasminum itself plus the American/South African genus Menodora. Such evidence sets the need to revise the generic delimitation of Jasminum by establishing a separate genus for the species belonging to sect. Alternifolia. As a consequence, the new genus Chrysojasminum is here established and the relevant nomenclatural combinations are supplied for fifteen taxa.

Esso si fonda su una documentazione per la massima parte inedita conservata nelle seguenti istituzioni: Biblioteca Braidense di Milano, Archivio di Stato di Milano, Biblioteca del Museo di Storia Naturale di Milano, Archivio di Stato di Pavia, Accademia delle Scienze di Torino; Archivio di Stato di Venezia, Biblioteca dell’Orto botanico dell’Università di Padova, Bibliothèque Centrale du Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle di Parigi. La prima parte del lavoro è dedicata al periodo che va dall’entrata in attività dell’Orto (1777) alla conduzione di Ciro Pollini (1805-1807) e si incentra in particolare sul legame tra la scelta delle piante dell’Orto, per lo più officinali, e l’insegnamento ai medici e ai farmacisti. Si passa quindi alla ricostruzione del lavoro svolto dal custode Filippo Armano che diede all’Orto una nuova fisionomia, introducendo piante ornamentali, esotiche e rare, e che redasse il primo Catalogo (1812) di cui si presenta una lista degli aggiornamenti nomenclaturali. Viene infine illustrata la figura del direttore Paolo Sangiorgio che resse l’Orto per tutto il periodo napoleonico, opponendosi alla concezione di Armano e applicandosi con forte impegno alla didattica.

Abstract: The present study forms part of the series of systematic and taxonomic contributions related to plant species of the Italian flora, and also other phanerogams, in light of recent biosystematic works of a molecular-genetic nature. Caloscordum and Nectaroscordum are separated from Allium s.l., Holandrea is included within Dichoropetalum, Ficaria is separated from Ranunculus and Althaea sect. Hirsutae is included within Malva. Confirmation is given for the inclusion of Lavatera within Malva, of Aegilops within Triticum and for the separation of Phelipanche from Orobanche. In addition some observations regarding the genera Cytisus, Hippophaë, Portulaca, Rhaponticum, Senecio and Torilis are presented. Finally new combinations and/or new names are proposed within the genera Caloscordum, Nectaroscordum, Dichoropetalum, Ficaria, Hippophaë, Malva, Portulaca and Rhaponticum.

Abstract: Gastridium ventricosum (Poaceae) is the currently accepted name of Gouan’s Agrostis ventricosa, whose previous unclear type designation is briefly discussed and superseded. All relevant sources, specimens, illustrations, and the author’s relevant correspondence are carefully evaluated, the original material and possible type specimens are thoroughly discussed for the purpose to fix the precise taxonomic application of the name. We have chosen as the best admissible lectotype a newly discovered, well-preserved specimen enclosed in a letter sent by Antoine Gouan to Carl Linnaeus in 1761. This letter, Ref. L2998, is preserved in the Linnean Society of London’s collections (LINN) and was drawn up a year before the publication of the species name.

Abstract: The inventory of the taxa collected during the annual field trip of the working group for Floristics, Systematics and Evolution of the Italian Botanical Society is reported. The field trip was held in 2016 along the Velino and Aterno valleys located between Lazio and Abruzzo administrative regions (central Italy). The flora documented for the studied area amounts to 629 specific and subspecific taxa (including two hybrids) belonging to 300 genera and 69 families. Thirty-eight taxa are endemic to Italy, and only 16 alien taxa were detected. Thirty-eight taxa are included in the IUCN Red List of the Italian Flora. Twenty-four taxa have to be considered as floristic novelties because either new or confirmed for the regional flora of Lazio or Abruzzo. In particular, 15 taxa are new and 6 are confirmed for Lazio. Regarding Abruzzo, 2 taxa are new for the regional flora and one is confirmed. Furthermore, the alien status in Lazio has been updated for one taxon.

Abstract: Wetlands are among the most fragile habitats on Earth and have often undergone major environmental changes. As a study case in this context, the present work aims at increasing the floristic knowledge of a reclaimed land now turned into an agricultural lowland with scarce patches of natural habitats. The study area is named Piana di Rosia, and it is located in southern Tuscany (Italy). The compiled checklist consists of 451 specific and subspecific taxa of vascular plants. The life-form spectrum shows a predominance of hemicryptophytes, followed by therophytes. The chorological spectrum highlights a co-dominance of Euri-Mediterranean and Eurasian species along with many widely distributed species. The checklist includes seven species of conservation concern, three Italian endemics (Crocus etruscus Parl., Polygala vulgaris L. subsp. valdarnensis (Fiori) Arrigoni, and Scabiosa uniseta Savi), 41 alien species, 21 segetal species, and 11 aquatic macrophytes of which five helophytes and six hydrophytes. This study suggests that irreversible land-use changes in wetlands can lead towards a simplification of the flora. However, despite the deep transformations that the former wetland has undergone, the presence of some aquatic and protected taxa is interesting. From a conservation point of view, the natural value of this agricultural area could be enhanced and its current management partly reconsidered, thus preserving the remnants of naturalness present.

Abstract: In this contribution, new data concerning the distribution of native vascular flora in Italy are presented. It includes new records, confirmations, exclusions, and status changes to the Italian administrative regions. A new combination in the genus Pilosella is proposed. Abstract: The census of the loci classici of 1,227 native, non-endemic vascular plants described from Italy is here presented and described. The effective place of publication of accepted names, basionyms and homotypic synonyms were identified and critically verified. The geographic information on the loci classici was excerpted from the protologues, as well as information on typification for the taxa described before 1 January 1958. The names without a holotype are 1,165. For 591 names a lecto- or neo-typification is available in literature, while 572 currently accepted taxa still need a type designation. For ten of these names showing previous ineffective typification, nomenclatural types are designated here ( Allium savii , A. tenuiflorum , Anemone millefoliata , Catapodium tuberculosum , Cynosurus siculus , Filago congesta , Saponaria bellidifolia , Sclerochloa patens , S. zwierleinii , and Vicia leucantha ). A new combination ( Trisetaria aurea comb. nov. ) is proposed. The general picture of the currently accepted taxa of vascular plants described from Italy, including endemics, amounts to 2,631, i.e. about 32% of the native flora currently recorded for the country.

Abstract: In this contribution, new data concerning the distribution of native vascular flora in Italy are presented. It includes new records and confirmations to the Italian administrative regions for taxa in the genera Allium, Arabis, Campanula, Centaurea, Chaerophyllum, Crocus, Dactylis, Dianthus, Festuca, Galanthus, Helianthemum, Lysimachia, Milium, Pteris, and Quercus. Nomenclature and distribution updates, published elsewhere, and corrections are provided as supplementary material.
