Optical information processing research aimed at Space Station automation applications is reviewed. The emphasis of the NASA Ames Research Center program is on intelligent optical pattern recognition and optical control processing. Attention is given to the primary functions of an overall scene understanding system: distortion-invariant optical feature generation, dimensionality reduction, object classification, and contextual information processing. A method of using synthetic discriminant functions to facilitate learning in a high-speed optical correlator is described. A discussion is presented of candidate analog and digital architectures for the optical implementation of state-estimation algorithms needed for the control of high-dimension dynamic systems. The multivariate system chosen for the optical control technology demonstration - a segmented, adaptive mirror and interferometrically based wavefront sensor - is also described.

A condensation refrigerator suitable for operation in a zero gravity space environment was constructed. The condensed liquid refrigerant is confined by surface tension inside a porous metal matrix. Helium-4 and helium-3 gases were condensed and held in a copper matrix. Evaporative cooling of confined liquid helium-4 resulted in a temperature of 1.4K. Using a zeolite adsorption pump external to the cryostat, a temperature of 0.6 K was achieved through evaporative cooling of liquid helium-3. The amount of time required for complete evaporation of a controlled mass of liquid helium-4 contained in the copper matrix was measured as a function of the applied background power. For heating powers below 18 mW the measured times are consistent with the normal boiling of the confined volume of liquid refrigerant. At background powers above 18 mW the rapid rise in the temperature of the copper matrix the signature of the absence of confined liquid occurs in a time a factor of two shorter than that expected on the basis of an extrapolation of the low power data.

Broadband 1-mm continuum observations of 37 active extragalactic objects are discussed in the context of several models of the radio and IR continuum emission of compact extragalactic objects. The observed correlation of the 1-mm flux density of 'blazars', or BL Lac objects and optically violent, variable quasars, with both radio and IR emission, is a natural consequence of the attribution of the radio-to-optical blazar continuum to synchrotron radiation from a relativistic jet viewed nearly along its axis. It is shown that a Comptonization model in which the IR continuum of quasars is produced by the upscattering of radio photons into the IR by a thermal plasma will be in accord with the 1-mm and IR data, if these photons have frequencies in the 10 to the 12th to 10 to the 13th Hz range.

Broad-band 1 mm continuum observations of 3C 273, 3C 279, BL Lac, 3C 84, OJ 287, and 3C 345 made between 1977 March and 1981 January are reported. With the possible exception of 3C 279, all of the objects exhibited evidence for variability in the 1 mm flux density on the time scale of a few months. Flux variations at wavelengths of 1 mm and 2 cm are well correlated for the 'blazars' (BL Lac objects and optically violent variable quasars) observed; emission outbursts occur simultaneously and have similar amplitude at the two wavelengths. In contrast, an outburst in the flux from the Seyfert galaxy 3C 84 was observed at a wavelength of 1 mm in early 1980 but has not appeared at 2 cm as of 1 yr later. The observed relationship between 'blazar' emission variability at 1 mm and 2 cm is inconsistent with the canonical expanding-source model of radio variability or any of its modifications. Instead, models in which the number of synchrotron-radiating electrons is time variable (due to particle injection or acceleration behind a relativistic shock) are required.

Titan has been observed with the 5-m Hale telescope at an effective wavelength of 1 mm. Adopting a value of 2700 km for the radius of Titan, a brightness temperature of 86 + or - 12 K is found at 1 mm. By a comparison of the results with previous measurements at longer wavelengths, it is concluded that the satellite surface is the source of the 1-mm radiation. Since the measured brightness temperature is close to the equilibrium temperature of a blackbody at the distance of Saturn, it is believed there is no significant greenhouse effect on Titan.

Upper limits to the one-millimeter continuum flux densities of the high redshift quasars B2 1225 + 31, Ton 490, and PHL 957 are presented. The upper limit to the power observed from these quasars at 1 mm is, on the average, one half of the observed power in the continuum at L-alpha. These observations are used to constrain the temperature of a hypothetical dust shell which reddens the quasar line and continuum emission by an extinction optical depth sufficient to account for the anomalously low L-alpha/H-alpha emission line ratio observed in each of these quasars. For the quasars studied, dust shell temperatures between 25 K and 50 to 95 K are prohibited by the present data. A dust shell at a temperature within this span reradiating all the power absorbed from the quasar ultraviolet continuum would produce a one-millimeter flux density greater than the measured upper limit. The average radius of the model dust shell cannot be between 70 kpc and 1 Mpc.

It is noted that in approximately a dozen sources, nearly simultaneous infrared and/or visual spectra are available, making it possible to examine the relationship between the infrared-visual and radio regimes. A simple transition to the steeper infrared spectra is seen as likely with a mean break wavelength of approximately 300 microns in the rest frame. These observations indicate a tapered source geometry, with the smallest structures roughly on the order of 10 to the 16th cm as estimated from the spectral break; this is consistent with scales estimated from optical variability time scales. Large amplitude variations on a six-month time interval are found to be fairly infrequent in most of the sources. A relatively model-independent way of categorizing flux variations as due to changes in source scale, or structure or the slope of the electron energy spectrum is suggested.

Continuum observations of 23 extragalactic objects have been made at a wavelength of 1 mm; nine of the 23 have been definitely detected at this wavelength. The sources detected include seven from which the 1-mm emission appears to be nonthermal, and two from which the emission appears to be thermal radiation from dust. Repeated observations of the brightest nonthermal sources permitted a search for 1-mm variations on time scales of one month to three years. BL Lac was observed to vary by more than a factor of 2 in flux, and 3C 84, 3C 120, and 3C 273 showed possible variations; 3C 279 showed no variations greater than + or - 30%. The 1-mm variations of BL Lac appear to be correlated with variations at radio wavelengths. The other sources with nonthermal spectra detected were 3C 111 and M87; the two thermal sources detected were NGC 253 and M82. Comparison of the latter two 1-mm measurements with 2.6-mm CO measurements suggests that the CO line in these galaxies is not heavily saturated.
