In our modern, technology-driven, and interconnected world, providing students with strong English communication skills is essential to prepare them for the future workforce. Education 4.0 refers to the integration of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality, and the Internet of Things, to enhance and personalize learning experiences in contemporary educational settings. Education 4.0 integrates these technologies to create personalized and immersive learning experiences that cater to individual needs, emphasizing critical 21st-century skills. Therefore, this study aimed to enhance professional English communication among students using the Education 4.0 applications ELSA Speak and Busuu. It employed a novel approach based on the substitution, augmentation, modification, and redefinition (SAMR) model to enhance communication effectively. The participants, selected through a stratified random sampling technique from the Virudunagar district of Tamil Nadu, India, included final year students (N = 100) from the arts, and science, and engineering disciplines, reflecting India’s multilingual society and numerous regional languages. After a pilot study, a pre-test using a questionnaire was administered, followed by a 4-week intervention utilizing the ELSA Speak and Busuu apps, and a post-test using another questionnaire. Data analysis included paired-sample t-tests and independent sample t-tests. The results revealed a significant improvement in the participants’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills before and after the intervention. Future recommendations include further explorations of Education 4.0 tools and techniques, and longitudinal studies to assess their sustained impact.

Background: The health sector has become more international than ever because of patients' increased mobility and access to healthcare services. As a result, the ability to communicate in English has become critical for nursing students in countries where English is used as a foreign language. Aim: This study aimed to highlight and understand the experiences of nursing students regarding the effect of simulation-based learning on their self-efficacy beliefs for using English for professional purposes. Methods: The study was conducted with 28 third-year university nursing students enrolled in a required English course and participating in two nursing simulations conducted in English. Focus groups were conducted using semi-structured interview questions to elicit and understand the self-efficacy beliefs of nursing students for using English for professional purposes. The collected data were analyzed by using content analysis. Results: The result of the study emerged under three themes: carrying out nursing duties by using professional discourse, building professional relationships with patients, and maintaining spontaneous conversations with patients. The overall results showed that while the students' self-efficacy beliefs increased for performing standard nursing duties and establishing rapport with patients, no increase was observed in their self-efficacy beliefs for holding a prolonged conversation with the patient. Conclusion: This study's findings have implications for nursing programs in which English proficiency is considered an important program outcome for nurses who may be expected to work in both their own language and English. The article highlights the urgent need for a new approach to teaching ESP (English for professional purposes) to Master’s applicants specializing in Physics and Mathematics. Therefore, a comparative analysis of textbooks and methods has been carried out to draw a parallel between traditional and innovative approaches to teaching foreign languages in technical tertiary institutions. The analysis has revealed the insufficiency of comprehensive ESP methodologies particularly in terms of teaching would-be mathematicians and physicists considering the science-students’ mindset. The latter should be primarily taken into account to ensure that the selection and submission of educational materials are tailored to the needs of science modes of thinking, namely, coherent and cohesive presentation of a project and its results and arguments; unified forms of presented achievements; academic command of style; concise and laconic content; universal “schemes” of presenting results. Within this context the role of extracurricular autonomous studies has been reconsidered and re-evaluated as far as language learning skills and competences are concerned. Particularly, benefits and drawbacks of individual work with an academic article have been examined as well as the current online availability of material and the extent of teacher’s involvement. The article stresses the need of transforming the conventional teaching models of technical translation and science-literature reading into a new form of seminar-workshop consultation. Its distinctive features and key principles would include its correlation with physical and mathematical disciplines, the use of specific formulaic expressions. The conclusion advances an idea based on some theoretical evidence of close integration between English and science departments to provide a Master’s applicant with relevant skills and competencies for professional communication in English.

- Abstract
Increasingly, professionally-oriented tertiary institutions are concerned with equipping their students with the English language skills needed in today's global professional world. The recently extended 2018 Common European Framework (CEFR) provides useful guidance to help institutions develop curricula to achieve this goal. This paper describes an advanced English for Economics course, whose aim is to facilitate economics students' traversal from student to professional, in terms of English can-dos (mostly B2–C1), as described in the 2018 CEFR Companion Volume. The pedagogy informing the course is three-pronged, drawing on English for Specific Purposes, twenty-first century skills, and the CEFR. We show how analysing such a course through the CEFR can help devise an anticipated learning trajectory for economics students about to enter the professional world. Our analysis highlights the fact that even though the newly extended CEFR does mention plurilingualism in the mediation can-dos, it does so only in terms of individual production. In the twenty-first century language classroom, where plurilingualism is part and parcel of understanding and carrying out the required tasks, much work is carried out in groups, with technology playing a key role in language mediation. We find that group and technology-assisted mediation activities are substantially different to the individually-oriented mediation activities described in the extended framework. Therefore, we suggest fine tuning, and perhaps adding, mediation can-dos to reflect the realities of tertiary pedagogical settings preparing learners for twenty-first century professional environments. Teaching-learning of oral communication in professional contexts require the students´ involvement in communicative situations demanding the development of their linguistic potentials, and determined by the existence in practice of social or professional interests. However, some limitations are still observed in the students’ oral communication expressed on their limited autonomy and oral interactive acting in professional contexts. The previous idea calls for the improvement of the particular Didactics of English for Professional Purposes, in the search of resources to guide this process towards the students´ communicative autonomy, originating the preparation of the oral communicative tasks presented in this work.

This study aimed to evaluate whether the communicative demands in English language - required in the labour market of a region in the countryside of São Paulo - are met by official documents, for the insertion of students of a technical course in Systems Development Integrated to Secondary Education of a public institution. The methodology is based on a documentary research (MARCONI & LAKATOS, 2003; MALHEIROS, 2011; BROWN, 2016) to the National Catalogue of Technical Courses and the Course Plan of Centro Paula Souza; and a research - known as survey (MALHEIROS, 2011) - with questionnaires to analyse the target situation (HUTCHINSON & WATERS, 1987; NATION & MACALISTER, 2010; BROWN, 2016), administered to 6 technical area teachers and 11 labour market practitioners from the city where the course is offered. Data assessment follows the assumptions of content analysis (HUCKIN, 2004) for information from qualitative approach; and the analysis of quantitative data on percentage bases, weighted averages, and numerical comparison (BROWN, 2016); in addition to data triangulation (LONG, 2005) carried out among the questionnaires; and between these and official documents. Results reveal that the National Catalogue of Technical Courses does not provide information on the need to use English for the Systems Development area, except that professionals read and write technical texts. The Course Plan, by means of Modern Foreign Language - English and Professional Communication curricular component, proposes the teaching of communicative skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, in addition to the study of genres, such as interviews and technical documentation. However, the results of the questionnaires showed the need to use English in other genres - in particular, code instruction, script, and tutorial. Furthermore, the results also reveal that the language is mainly used in technical attributions such as: (i) developing websites for the WEB, (ii) coding and debugging programs and (iii) researching the importance of new materials and processes used for the technological development; and that all skills are required, especially for: (i) giving guidance on technical problem and (ii) exchanging technical information - in which all four skills are demanded. Therefore, if the educational institution or producers of an IFP course want to prepare students for the labour market involved in this research, they should consider skills, professional activities and genres identified as those in which the use of the language will be required from graduates of this technical course.

Productive knowledge of subject-specific vocabulary is essential for successful professional communication. This article puts forward the case for an innovative approach to course and materials design in English for Professional Purposes (EPP) that highlights the importance of careful analysis of the vocabulary of specific professional discourse. It argues that EPP courses would benefit from being informed by corpus-based analysis of vocabulary and collocational choices in texts used in professional contexts. The argument is supported by the results of the corpus-based analysis of the discourse in the professional context of the European Union institutions. The analysis was carried out using the 1-million-word English EU Discourse (EEUD) Corpus, which was created based on a target needs analysis. The present study contributes to knowledge in the field by establishing the first comprehensive EU word and collocation list, which comprises 405 word families and is complemented by collocational patterns specific to English EU discourse. The results underpin the article’s central argument that collocational information should be used to enrich professional wordlists as they reveal subject-specific patterns that are fundamental for productive vocabulary knowledge in efficient professional communication. The pedagogic applications of the word and collocation lists are also demonstrated.

It is increasingly recognised that attention should be paid to investigating the needs of a new test, especially in contexts where specific purpose language needs might be identified. This article describes the stages involved in establishing the need for a new assessment of English for professional purposes in China. We first investigated stakeholders’ perceptions of the target language use activities and the necessity of the proposed assessment. We then analysed five existing tests and six language frameworks to evaluate their suitability for the need of the proposed assessment. The resulting proposal is for an advanced-level English assessment capable of providing a diagnostic evaluation of the proficiency of potential employees in areas of relevance to multinationals operating in China. The study has demonstrated the value of following a principled procedure to investigate the necessity for and the needs of a new test at the very beginning of the test development. The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes and the motivation of first-year students of the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering towards learning the professional English language. In any task, especially one as complex and demanding as learning a professional foreign language, motivation is an important factor. The Faculty is currently undergoing a change in programmes and is reviewing its decision to keep English language learning at the first year level as well as to increase the numbers of hours weekly spent learning English. Therefore, it was interesting to determine the students' view on the importance of learning a professional foreign language, the number of hours that they would like to see dedicated to the study of language and their reasons for deciding to study the English language as it refers to their chosen profession. The method used for data collection was a questionnaire. The study revealed that students' attitudes towards learning English for professional purposes was overwhelmingly positive, that they are very motivated to continue their study. Although they recognize the importance of learning a professional foreign language for the betterment of their careers (instrumental motivation), it was surprising to learn that a great number of students also see these lessons as a way of improving themselves, adding to their general knowledge and advancing their personal culture (intrinsic motivation). The students have also said that they believe that English should be studied not only in their first year of study but also later, throughout their Faculty education.

This study attempts a SWOT analysis of the higher level English Communication courses offered by the Department of Communication at the Polytechnic of Namibia (Communication Skills, Professional Writing and Professional Communication), in order to probe the current situation and use the findings to argue a case for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Professional Purposes (EPP) as alternative higher level courses. The study aims at carving a niche for an English curriculum that meets the demands made upon the learners by target situations. Therefore, the problem that this study seeks to address is that whereas learners face a heterogeneous target situation characterized by varieties of English, (English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP), English for Specific Business Purposes (ESBP), English for Legal Purposes (ELP), English for Medical Purposes (EMP), English for Economics (EE) and English for Science and Technology (EST), as the case may be, (Dudley – Evans and St John,1998)), the higher level courses expose students to mainly a generalised English curriculum which, by and large, does not fully address the requirements of the target situation. Findings from the study are aimed at bolstering efforts to implement an ESP curriculum that meets the expectation of learners as is demanded by the target situation. The study employs a descriptive analysis of data within the qualitative research paradigm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lately, several Faculties within the scope of the Zagreb University (4) chose to suspend English classes, believing them to be superfluous since, as the common wisdom states, everyone speaks English today. However, it has become obvious that many students have struggled with learning English during their secondary education and haven't obtained the desired level of proficiency necessary for reading professional literature, fundamental for their studies. Students’ views and attitudes towards any language (including English) may reveal a lot about issues and problems they might be facing as well as their reasons for learning a language. By means of a survey, in this paper we have tried to examine the attitudes of students of the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering and students of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, towards learning professional English as well as their fears and anxieties connected to foreign language learning.

At present time, technical higher educational establishments of the Russian Federation have to respond quite actively and promptly to the reforms in the system of education. Ever-changing federal state educational standards of higher education define the necessity of conceptually new approaches to the problems of the education content as well as the ways of their solving. The problem of choice of course books for teaching English at a technical university is not just the exception but is of great importance, as one of the main employer requirements to a competitive engineer is well-developed linguistic competence aimed at successful social and professional communication. Thus, the aim of presented research is to analyze the structure and contents of Russian and foreign course books and their correspondence to modern course book criteria developed by the authors after having observed the opinions of some methodologists as well as taking into consideration the own experience in this area. The notion of a course book is formulated in the paper, the research results to the selection of the content and structure of a modern course book are demonstrated. English for specific purposes is the main component of language learning in the training of qualified specialists for different areas. There are a lot of books, conducted various studies, developed special methods of education in this field, but, unfortunately, most of the researches are foreigners. It is suggested today in our country that graduates should be more confident to speak English. However, the level of English language proficiency among students of technical universities leaves much to be desired. The article deals with a brief review of the literature of foreign researchers in this field of language and attempt to delineate the concept of «English for General purposes» and «English for professional purposes».

Modern tendencies in engineering education set certain requirements on the competences to be obtained. To enable a future engineer to work at a highly competitive level and become an internationally recognized specialist, they must possess advanced English speaking and writing skills. At present most universities introduce educational programs that attract bright domestic and international students to ensure that they are in demand at the global market. The Strategic Program on Competitiveness Enhancement of National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University proposes that modules of professional training should be developed and delivered in English as a language of instruction so that the quality of teaching could be raised. To develop their own approaches to teaching, improve their language proficiency and develop courses and their elements in English, TPU teachers are to meet these challenging requirements and design course documentation and teaching aids, and engage modern teaching approaches in order to ensure high quality work with student groups which are often mixed in their abilities in both professional subjects and language proficiency levels. This paper addresses the course “Professional Training in English” which was developed upon completion of the joint program of TPU and the University of Southampton “Delivering through the Medium of English” and has successfully been delivered to bachelor students with the major “Oil and Gas Engineering” using the cooperative learning approach. The cooperative learning approach has proved to be one of the most successful in terms of teaching professional English to groups of students with mixed abilities.

- Abstract
Teaching-learning of oral communication in professional contexts require the students´ involvement in communicative situations demanding the development of their linguistic potentials, and determined by the existence in practice of social or professional interests. However, some limitations are still observed in the students’ oral communication expressed on their limited autonomy and oral interactive acting in professional contexts. The previous idea calls for the improvement of the particular Didactics of English for Professional Purposes, in the search of resources to guide this process towards the students´ communicative autonomy, originating the preparation of the oral communicative tasks presented in this work., La enseñanza-aprendizaje de la comunicación oral en el contexto profesional, supone la implicación del estudiante en situaciones de aprendizaje, que exigen el desarrollo de sus potencialidades lingüísticas, determinadas por la existencia, en la práctica, de intereses sociales o profesionales.

The article describes the design and implementation of an English as a Foreign Language teaching/ learning model during the three-year syllabus of a French engineering school. It is an English for Professional Purposes (EPP) syllabus as suggested by the requirements of industrial companies, but not related to any particular technological field, unlike many English for Specific Purposes approaches. On the other hand the complementarity of General Purpose English and EPP is considered in a communicative teaching structure, owing to the significant " social language" component of EPP. This combination can be linked to a humanistic understanding of the education of students in engineering schools., L’article décrit le principe et l’élaboration d’un programme d’enseignement de l’anglais sur trois années d’un cycle d’études en école d’ingénieurs. - Abstract
The English language is taught for a variety of professional purposes, including business and medicine, yet to date there is no scholarly research investigating the potential necessity of teaching English for environmental purposes. Given that tourism constitutes one of the largest global industries, that ecotourism is the fasting growing segment of the field, that English is the lingua franca of tourism worldwide, that the majority of ecotourism operations are located in the developing world, and that significant levels of unemployment persist within many of these areas, the relationship between knowledge of the English language and employment opportunities within the field of ecotourism warrants consideration. Consequently, the present exploratory study of the relationship between English and ecotourism in Latin America is a first attempt to determine whether or not English language training programs for ecotourism guides in Latin America are a relevant endeavor worthy of further investigation and whether or not the field of teaching English for Professional Purposes (EPP) should consider this area a new sub-discipline.
