Suppose you receive a sequence of qubits where each qubit is guaranteed to be in one of two pure states, but you do not know what those states are. Your task is to either determine the states or to construct a POVM (Positive Operator Valued Measure) that will discriminate them. This can be viewed as a quantum analog of unsupervised learning. A problem is that without more information, all that can be determined is the density matrix of the sequence, and, in general, density matrices can be decomposed into pure states in many different ways. To solve the problem additional information, either classical or quantum, is required. We show that if an additional copy of each qubit is supplied, that is, one receives pairs of qubits, both in the same state, rather than single qubits, the task can be accomplished. We then simulate numerically the measurement of a sequence of qubit pairs and show that the unknown states and their respective probabilities of occurrence can be found with high accuracy.

Introductory courses on quantum mechanics usually include lectures on uncertainty relations, typically the inequality derived by Robertson and, perhaps, other statements. For the benefit of the lecturers, we present a unified approach -- well suited for undergraduate teaching -- for deriving all standard uncertainty relations: those for products of variances by Kennard, Robertson, and Schr\"odinger, as well as those for sums of variances by Maccone and Pati. We also give a brief review of the early history of this topic and try to answer why the use of variances for quantifying uncertainty is so widespread, while alternatives are available that can be more natural and more fitting. It is common to regard the states that saturate the Robertson inequality as "minimum uncertainty states" although they do not minimize the variance of one observable, given the variance of another, incompatible observable. We introduce 'single-particle-exact density functional theory' (1pEx-DFT), a novel density functional approach that represents all single-particle contributions to the energy with exact functionals. Here, we parameterize interaction energy functionals by utilizing two new schemes for constructing density matrices from 'participation numbers' of the single-particle states of quantum many-body systems. These participation numbers play the role of the variational variables akin to the particle densities in standard orbital-free density functional theory. We minimize the total energies with the help of evolutionary algorithms and obtain ground-state energies that are typically accurate at the one-percent level for our proof-of-principle simulations that comprise interacting Fermi gases as well as the electronic structure of atoms and ions, with and without relativistic corrections. We thereby illustrate the ingredients and practical features of 1pEx-DFT and reveal its potential of becoming an accurate, scalable, and transferable technology for simulating mesoscopic quantum many-body systems., Comment: 45 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

At the limit of an infinite confinement strength $\omega$, the ground state of a system that comprises two fermions or bosons in a harmonic confinement interacting through the Fermi--Huang pseudopotential remains strongly correlated. A detailed analysis of the one-particle description of this ``contactium'' reveals several peculiarities that are not encountered in conventional model systems (such as the two-electron harmonium atom, ballium, and spherium) involving Coulombic interparticle interactions. First of all, none of the natural orbitals (NOs) $\{ \psi_\mathfrak{n}(\omega;\vec r) \}$ of the contactium is unoccupied, which implies nonzero collective occupancies for all the angular momenta. Second, the NOs and their nonascendingly ordered occupation numbers $\{ \nu_\mathfrak{n} \}$ turn out to be related to the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of a zero-energy Schr\"odinger equation with an attractive Gaussian potential. This observation enables the derivation of their properties such as the $\mathfrak{n}^{-4/3}$ asymptotic decay of $\nu_\mathfrak{n}$ at the $\mathfrak{n} \to \infty$ limit (which differs from that of $\mathfrak{n}^{-8/3}$ in the Coulombic systems), the independence of the confinement energy ${v_\mathfrak{n} = \langle \psi_\mathfrak{n}(\omega;\vec r) | \frac{1}{2} % \omega^2r^2 | \psi_\mathfrak{n}(\omega;\vec r) \rangle}$ of $\mathfrak{n}$, and the $\mathfrak{n}^{-2/3}$ asymptotic decay of the respective contribution $\nu_\mathfrak{n}t_\mathfrak{n}$ to the kinetic energy. Density functional theory is usually formulated in terms of the density in configuration space. Functionals of the momentum-space density have also been studied, and yet other densities could be considered. We offer a unified view from a second-quantized perspective and introduce a version of density functional theory that treats all single-particle contributions to the energy exactly. Random samples of quantum states with specific properties are useful for various applications, such as Monte Carlo integration over the state space. In the high-dimensional situations that one encounters already for a few qubits, the quantum state space has a very complicated boundary, and it is challenging to incorporate the specific properties into the sampling algorithm. In this paper, we present the Sequentially Constrained Monte Carlo (SCMC) algorithm as a powerful and versatile method for sampling quantum states in accordance with any desired properties that can be stated as inequalities. We apply the SCMC algorithm to the generation of samples of bound entangled states; for example, we obtain nearly ten thousand bound entangled two-qutrit states in a few minutes -- a colossal speed-up over independence sampling, which yields less than ten such states per day. In the second application, we draw samples of high-dimensional quantum states from a narrowly peaked target distribution and observe that SCMC sampling remains efficient as the dimension grows. In yet another application, the SCMC algorithm produces uniformly distributed quantum states in regions bounded by values of the problem-specific target distribution; such samples are needed when estimating parameters from the probabilistic data acquired in quantum experiments., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Random samples of quantum states are an important resource for various tasks in quantum information science, and samples in accordance with a problem-specific distribution can be indispensable ingredients. Some algorithms generate random samples by a lottery that follows certain rules and yield samples from the set of distributions that the lottery can access. Other algorithms, which use random walks in the state space, can be tailored to any distribution, at the price of autocorrelations in the sample and with restrictions to low-dimensional systems in practical implementations. In this paper, we present a two-step algorithm for sampling from the quantum state space that overcomes some of these limitations. We first produce a CPU-cheap large proposal sample, of uncorrelated entries, by drawing from the family of complex Wishart distributions, and then reject or accept the entries in the proposal sample such that the accepted sample is strictly in accordance with the target distribution. We establish the explicit form of the induced Wishart distribution for quantum states. This enables us to generate a proposal sample that mimics the target distribution and, therefore, the efficiency of the algorithm, measured by the acceptance rate, can be many orders of magnitude larger than that for a uniform sample as the proposal. We demonstrate that this sampling algorithm is very efficient for one-qubit and two-qubit states, and reasonably efficient for three-qubit states, while it suffers from the "curse of dimensionality" when sampling from structured distributions of four-qubit states., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures

We showcase the advantages of orbital-free density-potential functional theory (DPFT), a more flexible variant of Hohenberg-Kohn density functional theory. DPFT resolves the usual trouble with the gradient-expanded kinetic energy functional by facilitating systematic semiclassical approximations in terms of an effective potential energy that incorporates all interactions. With the aid of two systematic approximation schemes we demonstrate that DPFT is not only scalable, universally applicable in both position and momentum space, and allows kinetic and interaction energy to be approximated consistently, but can also compete with highly accurate, yet restricted, methods. As two- and three-dimensional geometries are extensively covered elsewhere, our focus here is on one-dimensional settings, with semiclassical observables systematically derived from both the Wigner function formalism and a split-operator approach. Originally conceived as a gedankenexperiment, an apparatus consisting of two Stern--Gerlach apparatuses joined in an inverted manner touched on the fundamental question of the reversibility of evolution in quantum mechanics. Theoretical analysis showed that uniting the two partial beams requires an extreme level of experimental control, making the proposal in its original form unrealizable in practice. In this work we revisit the above question in a numerical study concerning the possibility of partial-beam recombination in a spin-coherent manner. Using the Suzuki--Trotter numerical method of wave propagation and a configurable, approximation-free magnetic field, a simulation of a transversal Stern--Gerlach interferometer under ideal conditions is performed. The result confirms what has long been hinted at by theoretical analyses: the transversal Stern--Gerlach interferometer quantum dynamics is fundamentally irreversible even when perfect control of the associated magnetic fields and beams is assumed., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. Characterizing the noise in the set of gate operations that form the building blocks of a quantum computational device is a necessity for assessing the quality of the device. Here, we introduce randomized linear gate set tomography, an easy-to-implement gate set tomography procedure that combines the idea of state-preparation-and-measurement-error-free characterization of standard gate set tomography with no-design randomized tomographic circuits and computational ease brought about by an appropriate linear approximation. We demonstrate the performance of our scheme through simulated examples as well as experiments done on the IBM Quantum Experience Platform. In each case, we see that the performance of our procedure is comparable with that of standard gateset tomography, while requiring no complicated tomographic circuit design and taking much less computational time in deducing the estimate of the noise parameters. This allows for straightforward on-the-fly characterization of the gate operations in an experiment., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Chau et al. [New J. Phys. 20, 073003 (2018)] presented a new and straight-forward derivation of a fourth-order approximation '$U_7$' of the time-evolution operator and hinted at its potential value as a symplectic integrator. $U_7$ is based on the Suzuki-Trotter split-operator method and leads to an algorithm for numerical time propagation that is superior to established methods. We benchmark the performance of $U_7$ and other algorithms, including a Runge-Kutta method and another recently developed Suzuki-Trotter-based scheme, that are exact up to fourth order in the evolution parameter, against various classical and quantum systems. We find $U_7$ to deliver any given target accuracy with the lowest computational cost, across all systems and algorithms tested here. With the current interest in building quantum computers, there is a strong need for accurate and efficient characterization of the noise in quantum gate implementations. A key measure of the performance of a quantum gate is the minimum gate fidelity, i.e., the fidelity of the gate, minimized over all input states. Conventionally, the minimum fidelity is estimated by first accurately reconstructing the full gate process matrix using the experimental procedure of quantum process tomography (QPT). Then, a numerical minimization is carried out to find the minimum fidelity. QPT is, however, well known to be costly, and it might appear that we can do better, if the goal is only to estimate one single number. In this work, we propose a hybrid numerical-experimental scheme that employs a numerical gradient-free minimization (GFM) and an experimental target-fidelity estimation procedure to directly estimate the minimum fidelity without reconstructing the process matrix. We compare this to an alternative scheme, referred to as QPT fidelity estimation, that does use QPT, but directly employs the minimum gate fidelity as the termination criterion. Both approaches can thus be considered as direct estimation schemes. General theoretical bounds suggest a significant resource savings for the GFM scheme over QPT fidelity estimation; numerical simulations for specific classes of noise, however, show that both schemes have similar performance, reminding us of the need for caution when using general bounds for specific examples. The GFM scheme, however, presents potential for future improvements in resource cost, with the development of even more efficient GFM algorithms.

We embed the somewhat unusual multiplicative function, which was serendipitously discovered in 2010 during a study of mutually unbiased bases in the Hilbert space of quantum physics, into two families of multiplicative functions that we construct as generalizations of that particular example. In recent proposals for achieving optical super-resolution, variants of the Quantum Fisher Information (QFI) quantify the attainable precision. We find that claims about a strong enhancement of the resolution resulting from coherence effects are questionable because they refer to very small subsets of the data without proper normalization. When the QFI is normalized, accounting for the strength of the signal, there is no advantage of coherent sources over incoherent ones. Random samples of quantum channels have many applications in quantum information processing tasks. Due to the Choi--Jamio\l{}kowski isomorphism, there is a well-known correspondence between channels and states, and one can imagine adapting \emph{state} sampling methods to sample quantum channels. Here, we discuss such an adaptation, using the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo method, a well-known classical method capable of producing high quality samples from arbitrary, user-specified distributions. Its implementation requires an exact parameterization of the space of quantum channels, with no superfluous parameters and no constraints. Self-calibrating quantum state tomography aims at reconstructing the unknown quantum state and certain properties of the measurement devices from the same data. Since the estimates of the state and device parameters come from the same data, one should employ a joint estimation scheme, including the construction and reporting of joint state-device error regions to quantify uncertainty. We explain how to do this naturally within the framework of optimal error regions. As an illustrative example, we apply our procedure to the double-crosshair measurement of the BB84 scenario in quantum cryptography and so reconstruct the state and estimate the detection efficiencies simultaneously and reliably. Any Bayesian analysis involves combining information represented through different model components, and when different sources of information are in conflict it is important to detect this. Here we consider checking for prior-data conflict in Bayesian models by expanding the prior used for the analysis into a larger family of priors, and considering a marginal likelihood score statistic for the expansion parameter. Consideration of different expansions can be informative about the nature of any conflict, and extensions to hierarchically specified priors and connections with other approaches to prior-data conflict checking are discussed. Implementation in complex situations is illustrated with two applications. The first concerns testing for the appropriateness of a LASSO penalty in shrinkage estimation of coefficients in linear regression. Our method is compared with a recent suggestion in the literature designed to be powerful against alternatives in the exponential power family, and we use this family as the prior expansion for constructing our check. A second application concerns a problem in quantum state estimation, where a multinomial model is considered with physical constraints on the model parameters. The data of four recent experiments --- conducted in Delft, Vienna, Boulder, and Munich with the aim of refuting nonquantum hidden-variables alternatives to the quantum-mechanical description --- are evaluated from a Bayesian perspective of what constitutes evidence in statistical data. We find that each of the experiments provides strong, or very strong, evidence in favor of quantum mechanics and against the nonquantum alternatives. The multinomial model is one of the simplest statistical models. When constraints are placed on the possible values for the probabilities, however, it becomes much more difficult to deal with. Model checking and checking for prior-data conflict is considered here for such models. A theorem is proved that establishes the consistency of the check on the prior. Applications are presented to models that arise in quantum state estimation as well as the Bayesian analysis of models for ordered probabilities.

Quantum key distribution is on the verge of real world applications, where perfectly secure information can be distributed among multiple parties. Several quantum cryptographic protocols have been theoretically proposed and independently realized in different experimental conditions. Here, we develop an experimental platform based on high-dimensional orbital angular momentum states of single photons that enables implementation of multiple quantum key distribution protocols with a single experimental apparatus. Our versatile approach allows us to experimentally survey different classes of quantum key distribution techniques, such as the 1984 Bennett \& Brassard (BB84), tomographic protocols including the six-state and the Singapore protocol, and to investigate, for the first time, a recently introduced differential phase shift (Chau15) protocol using twisted photons. This enables us to experimentally compare the performance of these techniques and discuss their benefits and deficiencies in terms of noise tolerance in different dimensions., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We improve on the Thomas-Fermi approximation for the single-particle density of fermions by introducing inhomogeneity corrections. Rather than invoking a gradient expansion, we relate the density to the unitary evolution operator for the given effective potential energy and approximate this operator by a Suzuki-Trotter factorization. This yields a hierarchy of approximations, one for each approximate factorization. For the purpose of a first benchmarking, we examine the approximate densities for a few cases with known exact densities and observe a very satisfactory, and encouraging, performance. When a photon is detected after passing through an interferometer one might wonder which path it took, and a meaningful answer can only be given if one has the means of monitoring the photon's whereabouts. We report the realization of a single-photon experiment for a two-path interferometer with path marking. In this experiment, the path of a photon ("signal") through a Mach--Zehnder interferometer becomes known by unambiguous discrimination between the two paths. We encode the signal path in the polarization state of a partner photon ("idler") whose polarization is examined by a three-outcome measurement: one outcome each for the two signal paths plus an inconclusive outcome. Our results agree fully with the theoretical predictions from a common-sense analysis of what can be said about the past of a quantum particle: The signals for which we get the inconclusive result have full interference strength, as their paths through the interferometer \emph{cannot be known}; and every photon that emerges from the dark output port of the balanced interferometer has a \emph{known path}., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; this paper reports the realization of the experiment proposed in section VII B of arXiv:1704.03722 v2: Includes new figure of the setup, and additional details such as preparation of the photon source, and implementation of phase stabilization and control

We analyze Vaidman's three-path interferometer with weak path marking [Phys. Rev. A 87, 052104 (2013)] and find that common sense yields correct statements about the particle's path through the interferometer. This disagrees with the original claim that the particles have discontinuous trajectories at odds with common sense. In our analysis, "the particle's path" has operational meaning as acquired by a path-discriminating measurement. For a quantum-mechanical experimental demonstration of the case, one should perform a single-photon version of the experiment by Danan et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 240402 (2013)] with unambiguous path discrimination. Building on the discussion in PRA 93, 042510 (2016), we present a systematic derivation of gradient corrections to the kinetic-energy functional and the one-particle density, in particular for two-dimensional systems. We derive the leading gradient corrections from a semiclassical expansion based on Wigner's phase space formalism and demonstrate that the semiclassical kinetic-energy density functional at zero temperature cannot be evaluated unambiguously. In contrast, a density-potential functional description that effectively incorporates interactions provides unambiguous gradient corrections. Employing an averaging procedure that involves Airy functions, thereby partially resumming higher-order gradient corrections, we facilitate a smooth transition of the particle density into the classically forbidden region of arbitrary smooth potentials. We find excellent agreement of the semiclassical Airy-averaged particle densities with the exact densities for very low but finite temperatures, illustrated for a Fermi gas with harmonic potential energy. We furthermore provide criteria for the applicability of the semiclassical expansions at low temperatures. Finally, we derive a well-behaved ground-state kinetic-energy functional, which improves on the Thomas-Fermi approximation., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures. When using complex Bayesian models to combine information, the checking for consistency of the information being combined is good statistical practice. Here a new method is developed for detecting prior-data conflicts in Bayesian models based on comparing the observed value of a prior to posterior divergence to its distribution under the prior predictive distribution for the data. The divergence measure used in our model check is a measure of how much beliefs have changed from prior to posterior, and can be thought of as a measure of the overall size of a relative belief function. It is shown that the proposed method is intuitive, has desirable properties, can be extended to hierarchical settings, and is related asymptotically to Jeffreys' and reference prior distributions. In the case where calculations are difficult, the use of variational approximations as a way of relieving the computational burden is suggested. The methods are compared in a number of examples with an alternative but closely related approach in the literature based on the prior predictive distribution of a minimal sufficient statistic., Comment: Corrected typos in Example 3.2 and Section 4

Quantum state estimation aims at determining the quantum state from observed data. Estimating the full state can require considerable efforts, but one is often only interested in a few properties of the state, such as the fidelity with a target state, or the degree of correlation for a specified bipartite structure. Rather than first estimating the state, one can, and should, estimate those quantities of interest directly from the data. We propose the use of optimal error intervals as a meaningful way of stating the accuracy of the estimated property values. Optimal error intervals are analogs of the optimal error regions for state estimation [New J. Phys. 15, 123026 (2013)]. They are optimal in two ways: They have the largest likelihood for the observed data and the pre-chosen size, and are the smallest for the pre-chosen probability of containing the true value. As in the state situation, such optimal error intervals admit a simple description in terms of the marginal likelihood for the data for the properties of interest. Here, we present the concept and construction of optimal error intervals, report on an iterative algorithm for reliable computation of the marginal likelihood (a quantity difficult to calculate reliably), explain how plausible intervals --- a notion of evidence provided by the data --- are related to our optimal error intervals, and illustrate our methods with single-qubit and two-qubit examples., Comment: Very close to the published version; 22 pages, 10 figures, and 40 references

Density functional theory (DFT) is notorious for the absence of gradient corrections to the two-dimensional (2D) Thomas-Fermi kinetic-energy functional; it is widely accepted that the 2D analog of the 3D von Weizs\"acker correction vanishes, together with all higher-order corrections. Contrary to this long-held belief, we show that the leading correction to the kinetic energy does not vanish, is unambiguous, and contributes perturbatively to the total energy. This insight emerges naturally in a simple extension of standard DFT, which has the effective potential energy as a functional variable on equal footing with the single-particle density., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The entropic uncertainty relation proven by Maassen and Uffink for arbitrary pairs of two observables is known to be non-optimal. Here, we call an uncertainty relation optimal, if the lower bound can be attained for any value of either of the corresponding uncertainties. In this work we establish optimal uncertainty relations by characterising the optimal lower bound in scenarios similar to the Maassen-Uffink type. We disprove a conjecture by Englert et al. and generalise various previous results. One can implement fast two-qubit entangling gates by exploiting the Rydberg blockade. Although various theoretical schemes have been proposed, experimenters have not yet been able to demonstrate two-atom gates of high fidelity due to experimental constraints. We propose a novel scheme, which only uses a single Rydberg pulse illuminating both atoms, for the construction of neutral-atom controlled-phase gates. High-quality random samples of quantum states are needed for a variety of tasks in quantum information and quantum computation. Searching the high-dimensional quantum state space for a global maximum of an objective function with many local maxima or evaluating an integral over a region in the quantum state space are but two exemplary applications of many. These tasks can only be performed reliably and efficiently with Monte Carlo methods, which involve good samplings of the parameter space in accordance with the relevant target distribution. We show how the Markov-chain Monte Carlo method known as Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, or hybrid Monte Carlo, can be adapted to this context. It is applicable when an efficient parameterization of the state space is available. The resulting random walk is entirely inside the physical parameter space, and the Hamiltonian dynamics enable us to take big steps, thereby avoiding strong correlations between successive sample points while enjoying a high acceptance rate. Because of the constraint that the estimators be bona fide physical states, any quantum state tomography scheme - including the widely used maximum likelihood estimation - yields estimators that may have a bias, although they are consistent estimators. Schwemmer et al. (arXiv:1310.8465 [quant-ph]) illustrate this by observing a systematic underestimation of the fidelity and an overestimation of entanglement in estimators obtained from simulated data. Further, these authors argue that the simple method of linear inversion overcomes this (perceived) problem of bias, and there is the suggestion to abandon time-tested estimation procedures in favor of linear inversion. Here, we discuss the pros and cons of using biased and unbiased estimators for quantum state tomography. We report an experiment in which one determines, with least tomographic effort, whether an unknown two-photon polarization state is entangled or separable. The method measures whole families of optimal entanglement witnesses. We introduce adaptive measurement schemes that greatly speed up the entanglement detection. We report a controllable method for producing mixed two-photon states via Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion with a two-type-I crystal geometry. By using variable polarization rotators (VPRs), one obtains mixed states of various purities and degrees of entanglement depending on the parameters of the VPRs. The generated states are characterized by quantum state tomography. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with the theory. The method can be easily implemented for various experiments which require the generation of states with controllable degrees of entanglement or mixedness., Comment: submitted for publication

Rather than point estimators, states of a quantum system that represent one's best guess for the given data, we consider optimal regions of estimators. As the natural counterpart of the popular maximum-likelihood point estimator, we introduce the maximum-likelihood region---the region of largest likelihood among all regions of the same size. Here, the size of a region is its prior probability. Another concept is the smallest credible region---the smallest region with pre-chosen posterior probability. For both optimization problems, the optimal region has constant likelihood on its boundary. Disordered systems have grown in importance in the past decades, with similar phenomena manifesting themselves in many different physical systems. Because of the difficulty of the topic, theoretical progress has mostly emerged from numerical studies or analytical approximations. Here, we provide an exact, analytical solution to the problem of uniform phase disorder in a system of identical scatterers arranged with varying separations along a line. Relying on a relationship with Legendre functions, we demonstrate a simple approach to computing statistics of the transmission probability (or the conductance, in the language of electronic transport), and its reciprocal (or the resistance). Our formalism also gives the probability distribution of the conductance, which reveals features missing from previous approaches to the problem., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. The variance of difference of photocounts (VDPs) is an established measure of quantum correlations for quantum states of light. It enables us to discriminate between the classical correlation of a two-mode coherent state and the quantum correlation of a twin-beam state. We study the effect of loss and saturation of the photon-number-resolving detector on the measurement of the VDPs. An analytic function is derived for this variance, both for the coherent and the twin-beam states. It is found that the VDPs is no longer a reliable entanglement measure in the nonlinear regime of the detector response but it remains useful in some range of values of average photon numbers of the incident light. We also quantify the linear regime of the detector with saturation which will be useful for calibration of the detector quantum efficiency.

Driven Raman processes --- nearly resonant two-photon transitions through an intermediate state that is non-resonantly coupled and does not acquire a sizeable population --- are commonly treated with a simplified description in which the intermediate state is removed by adiabatic elimination. While the adiabatic-elimination approximation is reliable when the detuning of the intermediate state is quite large, it cannot be trusted in other situations, and it does not allow one to estimate the population in the eliminated state. We introduce an alternative method that keeps all states in the description, without increasing the complexity by much. An integro-differential equation of Lippmann-Schwinger type generates a hierarchy of approximations, but very accurate results are already obtained in the lowest order., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

In multi-level systems, the commonly used adiabatic elimination is a method for approximating the dynamics of the system by eliminating irrelevant, non-resonantly coupled levels. This procedure is, however, somewhat ambiguous and it is not clear how to improve on it systematically. We use an integro-differential equation for the probability amplitudes of the levels of interest, which is equivalent to the original Schrodinger equation for all probability amplitudes. In conjunction with a Markov approximation, the integro-differential equation is then used to generate a hierarchy of approximations, in which the zeroth order is the adiabatic-elimination approximation. It works well with a proper choice of interaction picture; the procedure suggests criteria for optimizing this choice. The first-order approximation in the hierarchy provides significant improvements over standard adiabatic elimination, without much increase in complexity, and is furthermore not so sensitive to the choice of interaction picture. There exists, in general, a convex set of quantum state estimators that maximize the likelihood for informationally incomplete data. We propose an estimation scheme, catered to measurement data of this kind, to search for the exact maximum-likelihood-maximum-entropy estimator using semidefinite programming and a standard multi-dimensional function optimization routine. This scheme can be used to infer the expectation values of a set of entanglement witnesses that can be used to verify the entanglement of the unknown quantum state for composite systems. We explore the question of state estimation for a qubit restricted to the $x$-$z$ plane of the Bloch sphere, with the trine measurement. In our earlier work [H. K. Ng and B.-G. Englert, eprint arXiv:1202.5136[quant-ph] (2012)], similarities between quantum tomography and the tomography of a classical die motivated us to apply a simple modification of the classical estimator for use in the quantum problem. This worked very well. In this article, we adapt a different aspect of the classical estimator to the quantum problem. In particular, we investigate the mean estimator, where the mean is taken with a weight function identical to that in the classical estimator but now with quantum constraints imposed. Among such mean estimators, we choose an optimal one with the smallest worst-case error-the minimax mean estimator-and compare its performance with that of other estimators. Despite the natural generalization of the classical approach, this minimax mean estimator does not work as well as one might expect from the analogous performance in the classical problem. While it outperforms the often-used maximum-likelihood estimator in having a smaller worst-case error, the advantage is not significant enough to justify the more complicated procedure required to construct it. The much simpler adapted estimator introduced in our earlier work is still more effective.
