This chapter contains an interview with Jan G. Platvoet, a retired Associate Professor from Leiden University, about the rise and fall of the phenomenology of religion (PoR) in the Netherlands (c.1877–1973). Reviewing the complex history from Tiele and Chantepie de la Saussaye through Van der Leeuw to Bleeker and Waardenburg, Platvoet points out several overlooked facts of crucial importance for the history of the study of religion. As a corrective to Anglophone scholarship Platvoet stresses that Dutch PoR developed independently of and prior to Husserl’s philosophical phenomenology, and he points out that Van der Leeuw only reluctantly accepted the title Phänomenologie der Religion for the German translation of his first introduction to the history of religion. More surprising, perhaps, is the fact that there was very little interaction among the Dutch phenomenologists of religion, and that both Van der Leeuw and Waardenburg, despite their international fame, were academically isolated figures in the Netherlands where they had little influence and no academic heirs. The absence of a “Dutch school” made possible the rapid collapse of Dutch PoR during the 1970s. Platvoet never practised PoR himself, but joined the anthropologically inspired assault on this approach that was launched by Theo van Baaren and others in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Within his own generation, Platvoet has been the one to most passionately promote a new, strictly secular and methodologically agnostic comparative science of religion(s) in the Netherlands. The interview took place in English in Jan Platvoet’s home in Bunnik on 20 June 2018.

Support for the radical right has risen in most Western democracies. Globalization and modernization processes are usually seen as the source of this development, reshaping political conflicts and producing new groups of people that feel ‘left behind’. However, few studies test how the relatively common trends in globalization shape the variation in the timing and extent of radical right support across countries. Focusing on the economic dimension of the ‘losers of globalization’ theory, we argue that income inequality is a suitable indicator to measure the extent to which some groups have fallen behind and to capture the fear of decline in material well-being of people not (yet) at the bottom of the income distribution. The relative deterioration in material conditions, we argue further, translates into a lower subjective social status of vulnerable groups who then turn towards the radical right. By cultivating nativism and thus providing non-economic criteria of social status, the radical right becomes more attractive as societies become more unequal. We show evidence for our hypothesis by comparing vote shares for radical right parties in 20 Western democracies between 1980 and 2016. The findings indicate that rising income inequality substantially increases support for the radical right in the long run. In addition, rising inequality translates into lower subjective social status of nontertiary educated men and this process of status decline further contributes to radical right support. Hence, there are both material and non-material linkages between income inequality and radical right support.

Diabetes mellitus is a widespread disease whose frequency increases constantly and is expected to reach alarming levels by the year 2025. Introduction of insulin therapy represented a major breakthrough; however, a very strict regimen is required to maintain blood glucose levels within the normal range and to prevent or postpone chronic complications associated with this disease. Frequent hyper- and hypoglycemia seriously affect the quality of life of these patients. Reversion of this situation can only be achieved through whole organ (pancreas) transplant or pancreatic islet transplant, the former being a high-risk surgical procedure, while the latter is a much simpler and may be accomplished in only 20-40 min. The advantages and perspectives of islet cell transplantation will be discussed, in the light of tissue engineering and gene therapy. Ongoing research carried out in our laboratory, aimed at developing clinical cell and molecular therapy protocols for diabetes will also be focused. HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS A 45-year-old patient was admitted because of frequent attacks of upper abdominal pain after food intake. The pain episodes had started shortly after a bout of acute pancreatitis. Physical examination was unremarkable except for mild pain on palpation of the left lower abdomen. INVESTIGATIONS Amylase and gamma-glutamyl transaminase activities as well as inflammatory parameters were slightly raised. Ultrasonography was suggestive of a circumscribed area of necrosis in the tail of the pancreas, a finding confirmed on endoscopic retrograde injection of contrast medium, which passed into the necrotic cavity via a fistula. TREATMENT AND COURSE The fistula failed to close during 12 days of conservative treatment (total parenteral nutrition; 2 g ceftizoxim twice daily; 1 ampoule somatostatin daily). In three sittings during 6 days, 1-2 ml fibrin glue injections were made by endoscopy retrogradely into the fistular passage resulting in its complete occlusion without any further complications. CONCLUSION A previously treatment-resistant pancreatic fistula can be successfully occluded by injection of fibrin glue by retrograde endoscopy, obviating surgical intervention with subsequent reduction in glandular capacity.

Coronin is a ubiquitous actin-binding protein representing a member of proteins portraying a WD-repeat sequence, including the beta-subunits of trimeric G-proteins. Coronin has been suggested to participate in multiple, actin-based physiological activities such as cell movement and cell division. Although the slow growth of coronin deletion mutants has been attributed to a defect in the fluid-phase uptake of nutrients, the exact role of coronin in cytoskeletal organization has not been elucidated. In this study, we examined a role of coronin in cytokinesis by analyzing the effect of coronin deletion on the actin cytoskeleton and its dynamic distribution using a green fluorescent protein (GFP)-coronin fusion protein. We show that GFP-coronin works similarly to natural coronin in vivo and in vitro. In live cells, GFP-coronin was found to accumulate into the cleavage furrow during cytokinesis. The fluorescence pattern suggests its association to the contractile ring throughout cytokinesis. Interestingly, a substantial amount of coronin was also bound to F-actin at the prospective posterior cortex of the daughter cells. We also show that the coronin null cells reveal irregularities in organization of actin and myosin II and divide by a process identical to the traction-mediated cytofission reported in myosin II mutants. Overall, this study suggests that coronin is essential for organizing the normal actin cytoskeleton and plays a significant role in cell division.
