Abstract

KASCADE-Grande is dedicated for investigations of cosmic-ray air showers in the primary energy range from 10 PeV to 1 EeV. The multi-detector system allows us to reconstruct charged particles, electron and muon numbers for individual air showers with high accuracies. Based on the shower size ($N_{ch}$) spectra of the charged particle component, the all-particle energy spectrum of cosmic rays is reconstructed, where attenuation effects in the atmosphere are corrected by applying the constant intensity cut method. The energy calibration is performed by using CORSIKA simulations with high-energy interaction models QGSJET-II-2, QGSJET-II-4, EPOS 1.99 and SIBYLL 2.1, where FLUKA has been used as low-energy interaction model for all cases. In the different hadronic models, different abundances for shower particles are predicted. Such model differences in the observables will be compared and discussed in this contribution. Abstract

The KASCADE-Grande detector is an air-shower array devoted to the study of primary cosmic rays with very high-energies (E = 10^{16} - 10^{18} eV). The instrument is composed of different particle detector systems suitable for the detailed study of the properties of Extensive Air Showers (EAS) developed by cosmic rays in the atmosphere. Among the EAS observables studied with the detector, the charged number of particles, the muon content (at different energy thresholds), and the number of electrons are found. By comparing the measurements of these air-shower parameters with the expectations from MC simulations, different hadronic interaction models can be tested at the high-energy regime with the KASCADE-Grande experiment. In this work, the results of a study on the evolution of the muon content of EAS with zenith angle, performed with the KASCADE-Grande instrument, is presented. Measurements are compared with predictions from MC simulations based on the QGSJET II, QGSJET II-04, SIBYLL 2.1 and EPOS 1.99 hadronic interaction models. A mismatch between experiment and simulations is observed. Abstract

The KASCADE-Grande experiment, located at KIT-Karlsruhe, Germany, consists of a large scintillator array for measurements of charged particles, N_ch, and of an array of shielded scintillation counters used for muon counting, N_mu. KASCADE-Grande is optimized for cosmic ray measurements in the energy range 10 PeV to 1000 PeV, thereby enabling the verification of a knee in the iron spectrum expected at approximately 100 PeV. Exploring the composition in this energy range is of fundamental importance for understanding the transition from galactic to extragalactic cosmic rays. Following earlier studies of elemental spectra reconstructed in the knee energy range from KASCADE data, we have now extended these measurements to beyond 100 PeV. By analysing the two-dimensional shower size spectrum N_ch vs. N_mu, we reconstruct the energy spectra of different mass groups by means of unfolding methods. Abstract

The KASCADE-Grande Muon Tracking Detector enables with high accuracy the measurement of directions of EAS muons with energy above 0.8 GeV and up to 700 m distance from the shower centre. Reconstructed muon tracks are used to investigate muon pseudorapidity (eta) distributions. These distributions are nearly identical to the pseudorapidity distributions of their parent mesons produced in hadronic interactions. Comparison of the eta distributions from measured and simulated showers can be used to test the quality of the high energy hadronic interaction models. In this context a comparison of the QGSJet-II-2 and QGSJet-II-4 model will be shown. The pseudorapidity distributions reflect the longitudinal development of EAS and, as such, are sensitive to the mass of the cosmic rays primary particles. With various parameters of the eta distribution, obtained from the MTD data, it is possible to calculate the mean logarithmic mass of CRs. Abstract

Data of the Grande extension of the KASCADE experiment allows us to study extensive air showers induced by primary cosmic rays with energies above 10^{16} eV. The energy of an event is estimated in terms of the number of charged particles (Nch ) and the number of muons (N{\mu} ) measured at an altitude of 110 m a.s.l. While a combination of the two numbers is used for the energy, the ratio defines the primary mass (group). The spectrum of the combined light and medium mass components, recently measured with KASCADE-Grande, was found to be compatible with both a single power-law and a broken power-law in the energy range between 10^{16.3} and 10^{18} eV. In this contribution we will present the investigation of possible structures in the spectrum of light primaries with increased statistics both from a larger data set including more recent measurements and by using a larger fiducial area than in the previous study. With the better statistical accuracy and with optimized selection criteria for enhancing light primaries we have found evidence for a hardening (ankle) of the spectrum of the light component at an energy of 10^{17.08+-0.08} eV., Comment: 4 pages, paper presented at the International Cosmic Ray Conference, Rio De Janeiro, 2013, paper ID 0527

Abstract

The detection of high-energy cosmic rays above a few hundred TeV is realized by the observation of extensive air-showers. By using the multi-detector setup of KASCADE-Grande, energy spectrum, elemental composition, and anisotropies of high-energy cosmic rays in the energy range from below the knee up to 2 EeV are investigated. In addition, the large high-quality data set permits distinct tests of the validity of hadronic interaction models used in interpreting air-shower measurements. After more than 16 years, the KASCADE-Grande experiment terminated measurements end of 2012. Abstract

The KASCADE-Grande air shower experiment [W. Apel, et al. (KASCADE-Grande collaboration), Nucl. Instrum. Methods A 620 (2010) 202] consists of, among others, a large scintillator array for measurements of charged particles, Nch, and of an array of shielded scintillation counters used for muon counting, Nmu. KASCADE-Grande is optimized for cosmic ray measurements in the energy range 10 PeV to about 2000 PeV, where exploring the composition is of fundamental importance for understanding the transition from galactic to extragalactic origin of cosmic rays. Following earlier studies of the all-particle and the elemental spectra reconstructed in the knee energy range from KASCADE data [T. Antoni, et al. (KASCADE collaboration), Astropart. Phys. 24 (2005) 1], we have now extended these measurements to beyond 200 PeV. By analysing the two-dimensional shower size spectrum Nch vs. Nmu for nearly vertical events, we reconstruct the energy spectra of different mass groups by means of unfolding methods over an energy range where the detector is fully efficient. The procedure and its results, which are derived based on the hadronic interaction model QGSJET-II-02 and which yield a strong indication for a dominance of heavy mass groups in the covered energy range and for a knee-like structure in the iron spectrum at around 80 PeV, are presented. This confirms and further refines the results obtained by other analyses of KASCADE-Grande data, which already gave evidence for a knee-like structure in the heavy component of cosmic rays at about 80 PeV [W. Abstract

Recent results of the KASCADE-Grande experiment provided evidence for a mild knee-like structure in the all-particle spectrum of cosmic rays at $E = 10^{16.92 \pm 0.10} \, \mathrm{eV}$, which was found to be due to a steepening in the flux of heavy primary particles. The spectrum of the combined components of light and intermediate masses was found to be compatible with a single power law in the energy range from $10^{16.3} \, \mathrm{eV}$ to $10^{18} \, \mathrm{eV}$. In this paper, we present an update of this analysis by using data with increased statistics, originating both from a larger data set including more recent measurements and by using a larger fiducial area. In addition, optimized selection criteria for enhancing light primaries are applied. We find a spectral feature for light elements, namely a hardening at $E = 10^{17.08 \pm 0.08} \, \mathrm{eV}$ with a change of the power law index from $-3.25 \pm 0.05$ to $-2.79 \pm 0.08$., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 1 table; this is the authors' version; the definite version has been published in Phys. Abstract

The energy spectrum of cosmic rays between 10**16 eV and 10**18 eV, derived from measurements of the shower size (total number of charged particles) and the total muon number of extensive air showers by the KASCADE-Grande experiment, is described. The resulting all-particle energy spectrum exhibits strong hints for a hardening of the spectrum at approximately 2x10**16 eV and a significant steepening at c. 8x10**16 eV. These observations challenge the view that the spectrum is a single power law between knee and ankle. Abstract

Cysteine S–H bonds have a spectroscopically convenient stretching frequency of ∼2550 cm−1. However, their cross section is low, and the band can be strongly broadened in heterogeneous environments, making detection very challenging. With two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) setups achieving ever higher sensitivities in recent years, systematic use of the weak cysteine sulfhydryls (Cys–SHs) absorption band is now within reach, even at low millimolar protein concentrations. Here, we demonstrate the capabilities of Cys–SH as an intrinsic 2D-IR label in pyruvate oxidase from E. coli, an enzyme with ten cysteines in its native sequence. 1D-IR measurements on the wild-type and individual cysteine knock-out variants show that two such residues have especially narrow SH signatures, caused by their intrahelical hydrogen bonding. 2D-IR analysis of these bands reveals an extraordinarily high anharmonicity (∼110 cm−1) and a long vibrational lifetime (∼4 ps). This allows monitoring spectral diffusion via center line slope analysis for up to 10 ps—separately for both the ground and excited states. The unique spectroscopic features and its ease of introduction make Cys–SH a useful IR spectroscopic label. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report the observation of a steepening in the cosmic ray energy spectrum of heavy primary particles at about $8 \times 10^{16}$ eV. This structure is also seen in the all-particle energy spectrum, but is less significant. Whereas the `knee' of the cosmic ray spectrum at $3-5 \times 10^{15}$ eV was assigned to light primary masses by the KASCADE experiment, the new structure found by the KASCADE-Grande experiment is caused by heavy primaries. The result is obtained by independent measurements of the charged particle and muon components of the secondary particles of extensive air showers in the primary energy range of $10^{16}$ to $10^{18}$ eV. Abstract

A large area (128 m^2) Muon Tracking Detector (MTD), located within the KASCADE experiment, has been built with the aim to identify muons (E_mu > 0.8 GeV) and their directions in extensive air showers by track measurements under more than 18 r.l. shielding. The orientation of the muon track with respect to the shower axis is expressed in terms of the radial- and tangential angles. By means of triangulation the muon production height H_mu is determined. By means of H_mu, a transition from light to heavy cosmic ray primary particle with increasing shower energy Eo from 1-10 PeV is observed. Abstract

KASCADE-Grande is a large detector array dedicated for studies of high-energy cosmic rays in the primary energy range from 100 TeV to 1 EeV. The multi-detector concept of the experimental set-up offers the possibility to measure simultaneously various observables related to the electromagnetic, muonic, and hadronic air shower components. The experimental data are compared to predictions of CORSIKA simulations using high-energy hadronic interaction models (e.g. QGSJET or EPOS), as well as low-energy interaction models (e.g. FLUKA or GHEISHA). This contribution will summarize the results of such investigations. Abstract

The all-particle energy spectrum as measured by the KASCADE-Grande experiment for E = 10^{16} - 10^{18} eV is presented within the framework of the QGSJET II/FLUKA hadronic interaction models. Three different methods were applied based on the muon size and the total number of charged particles individually and in combination. Abstract

Since 1993, a muon telescope located at Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe Muon Telescope) has been recording the flux of single muons mostly originating from primary cosmic-ray protons with dominant energies in the 10 - 20 GeV range. The data are used to investigate the influence of solar effects on the flux of cosmic-rays measured at Earth. Non-periodic events like Forbush decreases and ground level enhancements are detected in the registered muon flux. A selection of recent events will be presented and compared to data from the Jungfraujoch neutron monitor. The data of the Karlsruhe Muon Telescope help to extend the knowledge about Forbush decreases and ground level enhancements to energies beyond the neutron monitor regime., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, in Press ASR

Abstract

On basis of the theorem of a universal shower development stating that a hadronically generated extensive air shower is completely described by the primary energy, the position of the shower maximum and a parameter related to the total muon number, the so-called correlation curve method is developed and applied to KASCADE data. Correlation information of the muon and electron content of showers measured by the KASCADE experiment are used for the reconstruction of energy and mass of primary cosmic rays. Systematic uncertainties of the method and the results are discussed in detail. It is shown that by this method general tendencies in spectrum and composition indeed can be revealed, but the absolute normalization in energy and mass scale requires much more detailed simulations., Comment: article accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

Background: The rights to choose where and with whom to live are widely endorsed but commonly denied to adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). The current study provides a contemporary benchmark on the degree of choice exercised by adult service users in the USA. Method: Data came from the National Core Indicators programme. Participants were 6778 adult service users living in non-family-home service settings in 26 US states. Results: Most adults with ID did not participate in choosing where and with whom to live. Those with more support needs because of more severe ID and/or co-occurring conditions experienced less choice regarding living arrangements. Individuals living in their own home or an agency-operated apartment were more likely to choose where and with whom to live than individuals in nursing homes, institutions or group homes. However, few individuals with severe or profound ID chose where and with whom to live regardless of where they lived. Conclusions: In 2008, despite community-living policies that emphasise choice, many adult service users with ID in the USA experienced little or no choice about where and with whom to live, especially those individuals with more severe ID. Our findings provide a clear endorsement of policies promoting more individualised living settings, such as one's own home or an agency apartment, because these settings do provide substantially more choice about living arrangements.

Abstract

Minc03328 effector gene downregulation triggered by in planta RNAi strategy strongly reduced plant susceptibility to Meloidogyne incognita and suggests that Minc03328 gene is a promising target for the development of genetically engineered crops to improve plant tolerance to M. incognita. Meloidogyne incognita is the most economically important species of root-knot nematodes (RKN) and causes severe damage to crops worldwide. M. incognita secretes several effector proteins to suppress the host plant defense response, and manipulate the plant cell cycle and other plant processes facilitating its parasitism. Different secreted effector proteins have already been identified in M. incognita, but not all have been characterized or have had the confirmation of their involvement in nematode parasitism in their host plants. Herein, we characterized the Minc03328 (Minc3s00020g01299) effector gene, confirmed its higher expression in the early stages of M. incognita parasitism in plants, as well as the accumulation of the Minc03328 effector protein in subventral glands and its secretion. We also discuss the potential for simultaneous downregulation of its paralogue Minc3s00083g03984 gene. Using the in planta RNA interference strategy, Arabidopsis thaliana plants overexpressing double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) were generated to specifically targeting and downregulating the Minc03328 gene during nematode parasitism. Transgenic Minc03328-dsRNA lines that significantly downregulated Minc03328 gene expression during M. incognita parasitism were significantly less susceptible. The number of galls, egg masses, and [galls/egg masses] ratio were reduced in these transgenic lines by up to 85%, 90%, and 87%, respectively. Transgenic Minc03328-dsRNA lines showed the presence of fewer and smaller galls, indicating that parasitism was hindered. Overall, data herein strongly suggest that Minc03328 effector protein is important for M. incognita parasitism establishment. As well, the in planta Minc03328-dsRNA strategy demonstrated high biotechnological potential for developing crop species that could efficiently control RKN in the field. Abstract

O presente trabalho analisa a viabilidade técnica da redução do uso de energia elétrica pela substituição dos chuveiros elétricos por aquecedores solares e apresenta uma análise da redução do custo mensal de energia elétrica para os diferentes municípios de Goiás. Por meio do processamento de dados climatológicos e com o auxílio do aplicativo de informações geográficas SPRING®, foram calculados os valores de irradiâncias (MJ m-2 anual-1) e do número de horas anuais de brilho solar sobre a superfície da Terra e no topo da atmosfera, respectivamente, para os municípios do Estado de Goiás. Com base em dados censitários, calcularam-se o consumo médio de energia elétrica mensal por domicílio (kWh mês-1) e o total anual (kWh ano-1). Analisou-se a redução do custo mensal de energia elétrica por domicílio pela substituição de chuveiros elétricos com diferentes potências comerciais por aquecedores solares. Analisaram-se, ainda, a redução da vazão que passa na turbina (m³ s-1) da principal usina hidrelétrica de Goiás e a relação entre a redução da potência total anual (kW) e a potência gerada por essa usina (kW). Procedeu-se, finalmente, à análise econômica, avaliando-se a relação custo/benefício da substituição proposta. Os resultados mostraram redução média mensal da conta de energia de R$ 36,92 e média de 13 meses para o retorno do capital investido. Pôde-se concluir pela viabilidade técnica, econômica e ambiental da substituição dos chuveiros elétricos pelos sistemas aquecedores/reservatórios térmicos.A technical viability analysis on reduction of the electric power consumption by the substitution of electric showers by the adoption of solar heaters and analysis of monthly savings costs for the municipalities of State of Goiás (Brazil) were performed. Using processing of local weather data, aided by the geographical information applicative SPRING, irradiancy values (MJ m-2 year-1) and the number of annual hours of solar shine on earth surface and on the top of the atmosphere, were calculated. Based on census data, the average monthly electric power consumption per household (kWh month-1) and the total one per year (kWh year-1), and the reduction on the monthly cost per household were estimated. Analyzed is also the reduction of flow that passes in turbine (m³ s-1) from the main hydroelectric power plant of State of Goiás and on the relationship between the total annual power (kW) and that one generated by same plant (kW) were predicted. At last, economic analysis of the results for the proposed substitution showed an average monthly diminution of about R$ 36.92 (US$ 17.00) on the energy bill, per household and an average term of 13 months for the return of the invested capital. One concluded by the technical, economical and environmental viability for the substitution of electric showers by thermal heaters/reservoirs systems.

Abstract

Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) considerably affect their plant hosts, causing extensive damage in the world agriculture. The most widely used method to control these pathogens is through the intensive application of nematicides, despite being highly toxic to humans, animals, and the environment. The urgent search for alternative forms of control based on natural resources that are effective, provide a targeted strategy that is less toxic and less harmful to the environment. The species Solanum stramonifolium Jacq. (Solanaceae) have been described as resistant to root-knot nematode infection and other diseases, such as fungi and bacteria. Nematotoxic assays here presented demonstrated that aqueous crude seed extract from S. stramonifolium is very effective against second stage juveniles (J2) of M. incognita even at very low concentrations such 100μg mL-1 during in vitro bioassays. Furthermore, this extract also demonstrated a nematicidal effect after a heating process at 50 °C, killing more than 90% of M. incognita J2. No toxic activity was observed against non-target organisms, like bacteria, and the free-living nematode Caenorhabditis elegans at concentrations varying from 25 to 512 μg mL-1. Finally, greenhouse assays showed that external dialysate (ED) can be used to control nematodes in the soil, and that the plants treated with the dialysates display a reproduction factor lower than the synthetic nematicide used as positive control.
